From President Drew Faust When Harvard’s leaders established the nation’s first nonsectarian theological school in 1816, they gave it a clear mission: Harvard Divinity School would educate learned clergy. Over the next 200 years, fueled by rigorous minds and open hearts, that mission grew.

Not only would the School prepare ministers to speak at the pulpit, it would produce scholars to discover knowledge. It would examine a range of traditions and explore diverse faiths. It would promote a culture of service and strive to inculcate goodness. It would create new generations of leaders, literate in religion, grounded in ethics, and passionate about social justice.

As HDS celebrates its bicentennial, we see the fruits of that legacy. The School helped shape Theodore Parker, the nineteenth-century abolitionist whose words inspired Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr. It was the home of Henry Cadbury, who accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in 1947 on behalf of the American Friends Service Committee, an organization he co-founded and led for many years. More recently, HDS has set the standard for inclusion of women, people of color, and people of different religious traditions—both in the subjects of its teaching and research, and in the “Faces of Divinity” that populate its faculty, its student body, and the remarkable exhibit on the School’s history that graces its campus this academic year.

I speak often about One Harvard and the idea that each part of the University is made stronger by the spirit and purpose of the whole. To me, the Divinity School is a part of Harvard that keeps our eye on the questions that matter. Where do we find meaning in an age of infinite information? How do we understand ourselves and our common humanity in a world that is more connected than ever but is profoundly shaped—and often shaken—by its contrasts and differences? This search for the experience of meaning and significance, as Dean Hempton puts it, is “humanity’s greatest challenge.”

Harvard Divinity School aspires every day to meet that pressing challenge. Its work has never been more vital to our understanding of a complex world, to the well-being of our planet, and to the purpose of the University. Across campus, its subjects of inquiry have never felt more urgent—from the discussions of values and ethics buzzing across the Schools to the tremendous appetite at the College for answers to the complex questions of how to live a good life.

For 200 years the Divinity School has demonstrated what it can do, and what it must do. As we celebrate its bicentennial, it is clear that we need HDS and the extraordinary community it creates. We need its leadership and insights. We need its humility on the path toward truth. And, most of all, we need its capacity to magnify and dedicate for the betterment of humankind the questioning soul, the curious mind, and the compassionate heart.

To Better Serve Our World At bicentennial, HDS Dean considers School’s evolving mission

On its 200th anniversary, Harvard Divinity School rests on a firm foundation— thanks largely to the leadership of its Dean, David N. Hempton. Since taking office in 2012, Hempton has helped lead the effort to restructure the University’s Committee on the Study of Religion, merged HDS’s doctoral program with that of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS), and persuaded members of the Faculty of Divinity to devote a quarter of their teaching time to undergraduate education.

In line with his vision for the School, Hempton has also tried to make HDS a leader in the study of religion at Harvard by encouraging cross-faculty initiatives with Harvard Business School and Harvard Kennedy School as well as FAS. He’s presided over the hiring of three new full professors and the promotion of six more, reinvigorating research, teaching, and scholarship at the School. Finally, Hempton has been the public face of the Campaign for HDS, which has so far raised over $30M for teaching, research, and student support.

On the cusp of HDS’s third century, Dean Hempton shared his thoughts on the School’s proud past, its standing today, and the challenges and opportunities of the future.

HDS COMMUNICATIONS: Harvard University was founded “to advance learning

do much history without knowing some facts about dates and so on, but any history that stops there is just useless. What’s really important is interpretation and analysis. It’s somewhat the same with religion.

Ministry and Millennials: A Growth Opportunity At a time when many see the decline in religious affiliation among young people as a crisis, Angie Thurston and Casper ter Kuile, both MDiv ’16, see a growth opportunity. Co-authors of the study “How We Gather,” Thurston and ter Kuile say that millennials hunger for the kind of experience traditionally associated with religion—and that secular organizations like the fitness community Crossfit are proliferating to meet the need.

“There are all sorts of religious elements to Crossfit,” ter Kuile said during a presentation at HDS last April. “Different workouts are named after different people—fallen soldiers or police officers—so there’s this ritualization of grief. You have a workout of the day, just like if you were saying the Lord’s Prayer in this church over here and I’m over there. There’s a sense of connection across space. [Founder] Greg Glassman talks about how he wants to shepherd a flock. It’s a real phenomenon.”

Thurston and ter Kuile work to bring the resources of ministry to groups like Crossfit, the Dinner Party, Daybreakers, and many others stepping—often unconsciously—into the religious space. Last November, the two brought 50 leaders of these new secular communities together for a conference at HDS to build relationships with each other, learn skills, and share wisdom. They also brought leaders from different religious traditions into the conversation to share their own experience and best practices. The result, Thurston said last April, was that group leaders were able to move past their “knee-jerk reaction to religion.”

Ter Kuile, who came to HDS with an interest in activism more than in religion, said he could identify with leaders of secular groups who don’t think of what they do as ministry. After taking courses like “Introduction to Ministry Studies” and “Meaning Making,” however, he realized that the skills of religious leadership—the ability to organize a community, to speak with power, to listen, reflect, and draw on the wisdom of the world’s faith traditions—could make his work for environmental justice more effective. As HDS moves into its third century, ter Kuile says that the School is in a position to offer leaders like him the knowledge they need to work for a better world.

“The people we’ve been building relationships with are doing ministry,” he said. “They would never have considered coming to Harvard Divinity School, but the core of what we offer is exactly what they need. In fact, some of the people who came to the conference last fall are applying to HDS because we’re able to have conversations that people want to have but don’t know how to. We just need to talk about what we offer in ways that people can hear.”

“After the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, the Clinton administration decided that they needed to have somebody working full time on counterterrorism,” Simon explains. “They pulled me by the collar and put me in that job. I and certain colleagues in the CIA were very tuned in to the evolving role of religion in Middle Eastern politics. I was sensitized to

Today, as a member of the clergy, Hayward can relate to religious actors as a colleague, rather than as an outsider looking to harness the local faith community to serve political or security interests. Most of all, the ordination path gave her the internal resources to do work that can be frustrating and challenging as often as it is rewarding.

“The deepening and strengthening of my spiritual practices and commitments has not only given me a moral compass, but also internal resilience,” she says.

For others, it means heading up an NGO that works to improve the health of millions of people in developing countries.

Wherever they go and however they serve, HDS students and alumni are the “boots on the ground” that make the world a better place.

EDUCATION THROUGH SERVICE Silvia Mejia came to HDS thinking she would pursue further graduate work in religion. Instead, she ended up having a life-changing experience that led her to discover her passion: serving those who were invisible to her, and to many others.

“I took the course ‘Ethics, Punishment and Race,’ taught by Professor Kaia Stern. The class took place at MCI-Norfolk, a medium-security men’s prison. Half of the students came from different Harvard schools, and the other half were incarcerated students,” she said.

“In the class we explored the American incarceration crisis and its religious roots, but what was most transformative about it was learning alongside people behind bars.”

Mejia’s passion for service, particularly serving others through prison ministry, was brought out not only through her courses, but also through the experiential learning opportunities at HDS. The School’s Field Education Program and the Harvard Prison Education Project (HPEP)—along with Partakers and Boston University’s Prison Education Program—enables students to provide academic mentoring for those SILVIA MEJIA

“We are trying to help heal a neighborhood,” she says.

“So we’ve decided to just open our doors and invite people in on one night a week to talk about their pain. We give you a meal. There are no requirements.

One of the efforts that most excites Walker is being able to help those with mental health issues. There’s a stigma attached to mental health that can get in the way of receiving treatment, she says, adding that in churches there’s a feeling that you can “pray everything away.”

“Well, you know, some things you can’t pray away. God wants you to get some help, so that’s what we’re doing,” she says.

While Walker’s current career may be very different from her years anchoring newscasts, she sees them as linked.

Morgan’s recently published second novel, The Sport of Kings, takes on large topics like race, gender, and history through the lens of horse racing. In startling, carefully hewn prose, Morgan’s books pursue the “moral beauty” she said she came to HDS to learn about.

Unsurprisingly for a writer interested in thorny ethical questions, Morgan has also said that the earliest stories to impact her were the stories of the Old and New Testaments. HDS provides ample opportunities to study these and other sacred books from diverse traditions, like the Hindu texts that inspired Coste Lewis.

The importance of analyzing such texts, not only as philosophical or sacred documents, but as literature, was emphasized by HDS professor Mayra Rivera in a talk at the Mahindra Center for the Humanities in fall 2015.

“Getting at some of the most fascinating aspects C. E. MORGAN

of religious texts requires attention to their use of language,” Rivera said. “These texts seek to entice readers to see differently by putting to words what they deem ultimately inexpressible, making visible the invisible. For this they use stories, parables, poetry, and startling metaphors in attempts to push language to its limits. And thus the importance of literary approaches.”

Aspiring writers at HDS can also study more recent texts that are explicitly or imaginatively indebted to different spiritual traditions. This past spring semester, Rivera taught a course on Caribbean poetics, a genre that often uses religious language and images, and Professor Davíd Carrasco taught the fiction of Toni Morrison and Gabriel García Márquez, which he sees as sharing themes of apocalypse.

For the poet Spencer Reece, communing with his spiritual-literary ancestors is crucial. When he came to HDS, he wanted to be like George Herbert, the seventeenth-century Anglican priest and poet. Later,

Unlike Reece, current HDS student Kassi Underwood has long felt a calling to be a writer, but she only recently came to see how that profession might relate to ministry. For years, she has written creative nonfiction about her own life for publications like The New York Times, New York Daily News, and Al Jazeera America.

Next year, HarperOne will publish her memoir, May Cause Love: My Humbling, Heartbreaking, Hugely Satisfying Search for Enlightenment After Abortion.

Charles M. Stang, Professor of Early Christian Thought OUR DIVINE DOUBLE What if you were to discover that you were not entirely you, but rather one half of a whole, that you had, in other words, a divine double? In the second and third centuries CE, this idea gripped the religious imagination of the Eastern Mediterranean. Our Divine Double traces the rise of this ancient idea that each person has a divine counterpart, twin, or alter ego, and the eventual eclipse of this idea with the rise of Christian conciliar orthodoxy.

Mayra Rivera, Professor of Religion and Latina/o Studies POETICS OF THE FLESH In Poetics of the Flesh, Mayra Rivera offers poetic reflections on how we understand our carnal relationship to the world, at once spiritual, organic, and social. She connects conversations about corporeality in theology, political theory, and continental philosophy to show the relationship between the ways ancient Christian thinkers and modern Western philosophers conceive of the “body” and “flesh.”

CYNTHIA L. G. KANE, MDIV ’96, lieutenant commander in the Chaplain Corps of the United States Navy, is currently stationed aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, Newport News, VA. Her formal ministry has included posts as a hospital chaplain at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and ministry internships at the First Parishes in Concord and Bedford, MA. She was ordained by the latter in 1997. She was the first official chaplain at Ferry Beach, Saco, ME. After completing a CPE residency at Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, HI, she was invited to serve as director of the Campus Ministry Program for Unitarian Universalist Students in the Joseph Priestly District of the Unitarian Universalist Association. Commissioned to the Chaplain Corps of the United States Navy in August 2001, she completed chaplain school in Newport, RI, and then reported to the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Indian Head, MD, where she also was assigned to the USMC Chemical Biological Incident Response Force (CBIRF) and Arlington National Cemetery. A graduate of Tulane University and the University of San Diego, as well as HDS, she has received numerous awards, including the Joint Service Commendation Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. She served aboard USS John C. Stennis, Bremerton, WA, from 2004 to 2006, and was sent on individual augmentation to the Joint Task Force Command overseeing detainee operations in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in 2005–06. Her following tours were as deputy director, Spiritual Fitness Division, Navy Region Southwest, San Diego, CA, and then plank-owner command chaplain, USCG Sector Northern New England, Portland, ME. VALARIE K. KAUR, MTS ’07, is a lawyer, filmmaker, activist, entrepreneur, and Sikh thought leader. She has made awardwinning films and led national campaigns to advance progressive issues: racism and profiling, gun violence, immigration detention, solitary confinement, net neutrality, LGBTQ equality, and hate crimes against Muslims and Sikhs. She is a regular television commentator on MSNBC and opinion contributor to CNN, NPR, PBS, The Washington Post, The Huffington Post, The Hill, and The New York Times. She founded the Groundswell Movement of 200,000+ members, the largest multifaith online organizing community in the United States. A prolific public speaker, she has addressed audiences at

the White House, the Pentagon, the Parliament of the World’s Religions, and on more than 250 U.S. college campuses; she was the first Sikh to deliver Stanford’s baccalaureate commencement address and the College of St. Benedict’s commencement address. As a senior fellow at Auburn Theological Seminary, she often preaches on “revolutionary love” as a political and moral force that can dismantle structures of injustice. She has traveled with the U.S. State Department as a keynote speaker throughout Myanmar, aiding its transition from dictatorship into democracy. She has reported on the military commissions at Guantanamo and clerked on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

She is also a graduate of Stanford University and Yale Law School, where she founded the Yale Visual Law Project to train law students to make films that change policy. She is currently the Media and Justice Fellow at Stanford Law School’s Center for Internet and Society, where she co-founded Faithful Internet and advocates for Internet freedom.

BETSEE PARKER, MDIV ’85, is a philanthropist, Episcopal priest, international public health and civil rights advocate, preservationist, arts and education patron, and owner of several award-winning show horses. She is a leader of the Millennium Villages Project (MVP), a collaboration of Columbia University’s Earth Institute, the United Nations Development Programme, and Millennium Promise to end extreme poverty throughout the world. At MVP, she has supported the creation and adoption of sustainable development models in Guinea, Ghana, Senegal, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Togo, and Sierra Leone, among other nations, and has helped improve the lives and health of thousands of people in Africa. Prior to joining MVP, she worked with first responders and pathologists as part of the recovery effort after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. She also served as head chaplain of the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and as a leader of the multifaith chaplaincy team at Ground Zero. A longtime owner of show horses that compete at the highest levels, she has several times been named Owner of the Year by the United States Equestrian Foundation.

She has been awarded honorary doctorates of humane letters from the State University of New York and from Niagara University. In addition to international development, her philanthropy extends to educational institutions, the arts, and youth in U.S. equestrian events, among other causes.

PRESTON N. WILLIAMS, PHD ’67, who retired in June 2002, became Harvard Divinity School’s Houghton Professor of Theology and Contemporary Change in 1971.

He has taught previously at four historically black colleges: Johnson C. Smith University, Knoxville College, North Carolina College for Negroes (now North Carolina Central University), and Lincoln University.

He has served as associate chaplain at Pennsylvania State University and Protestant chaplain at Brandeis University. Prior to coming to Harvard Divinity School, he was the Martin Luther King, Jr. Professor at Boston University School of Theology. In his years at Harvard, he has served in various capacities beyond his professorial role: He was acting dean of the Divinity School in 1974–75, and the acting and first director of Harvard’s W. E. B. Du Bois Research Institute from 1975 to 1977. He was president of the American Academy of Religion, 1975–76, and president of the Society for Christian Ethics, 1974–75. From 1998 to 2008 he was the director of the Summer Leadership Institute, a program that brought religious leaders from urban settings to Harvard for two weeks of intensive classes on community development. His fields of interest are Christian ethics, social and economic justice, human rights, and African American experience. He is an ordained Presbyterian USA minister.

In Memoriam: Helmut Koester Helmut Koester, John H. Morison Professor of New Testament Studies and Winn Professor of Ecclesiastical History Emeritus, died on New Year’s Day, 2016, at age 89. Koester was a leading scholar in the history of Christianity, New Testament exegesis and theology, the religions of the ancient Roman world, and archaeology.

Koester was assistant professor at the University of Heidelberg (1956–59) when he came to Harvard to join the faculty as a tenured associate professor. He was named John H. Morison Professor of New Testament Studies in 1963 and Winn Professor of Ecclesiastical History in 1968. He retired in 1998 but continued to be active in advising and teaching until 2014 and in research and writing until his death.

Koester was editor of Harvard Theological Review from 1975 until 1999.

His lengthy bibliography includes Trajectories through Early Christianity (1971, with James M. Robinson); History, Culture, and Religion of the Hellenistic Age (1982); History and Literature of Early Christianity (1987); Ancient Christian Gospels: Their History and Development (1990); From Jesus to the Gospels (2007); and Paul & His World (2007). In addition to authoring numerous books and articles, Koester was editor of the Encyclopedia of Archeology in the Biblical World and editor of many volumes in the Hermeneia commentary series.

The list of Koester’s publications cannot adequately communicate the breadth and impact of his work. From the beginning of his career, his interest in the New Testament was developed alongside research into noncanonical texts, resulting from his ability to ground the texts of the New Testament within a broad context of literary and documentary works.

“Helmut Koester was a man of tremendous intellectual breadth and generosity,” said Laura S. Nasrallah, Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity. “He forged connections between archaeologists and scholars of the New Testament, creating interdisciplinary connections before the term was even popular. Those intellectual connections resulted in life-long collegial connections and friendships into which he drew his own students.”

Faculty Promotions 2015–16 GIOVANNI BAZZANA: PROFESSOR OF NEW TESTAMENT In the last decade, Giovanni Bazzana’s work has become increasingly focused on the interplay between papyrology and New Testament studies, in particular to the potential broadening of the scope of historical analysis and comparison to the wider Jewish and GrecoRoman contexts. Bazzana’s recent book, Kingdom and Bureaucracy: The Political Theology of Village Scribes in the Sayings Gospel Q (Peeters Publishers, 2015), deals with the administrative backdrop of the Sayings Gospel Q and with its implications for the ideological construction of the discourse around the basileia of God. DAVID HOLLAND: JOHN A. BARTLETT PROFESSOR OF NEW ENGLAND CHURCH HISTORY A renowned scholar of American religious history, David Holland casts a broad and inclusive net in understanding the deep intellectual, theological, and cultural currents driving New England church history.

He is the author of Sacred Borders: Continuing Revelation and Canonical Restraint in Early America (Oxford University Press, 2011), which offers a new perspective of the matter of cultural authority in a democratized society, the tension between subjective truths and communal standards, a rising historical consciousness, the expansion of print capitalism, and the principle of religious freedom. Professor Holland is the latest accomplished faculty member to be named to the chair, which was previously held by R. Marie Griffith and David Hall.

MAYRA RIVERA: PROFESSOR OF RELIGION AND LATINA/O STUDIES Mayra Rivera’s work in religious studies engages key Christian themes in relation to current philosophy and theories of gender, coloniality, ethnicity, and race. She is affiliated with the Committee on Ethnicity Migration Rights, the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures (Faculty of Arts and Sciences), and American Studies (Graduate School of Arts and Sciences). Her most recent book, Poetics of the Flesh (Duke University Press, 2015), explores the connections among theological, philosophical, and political metaphors of body and flesh.

ANDREW TEETER: PROFESSOR OF HEBREW BIBLE/OLD TESTAMENT Andrew Teeter’s research centers on the modalities, techniques, aims, and motivations of early Jewish biblical interpretation, particularly as it intersects with the textual development of the Hebrew scriptures (with emphasis on innerbiblical interpretation, composition history, canon formation, ancient biblical translation, and the exegetical literature of so-called rewritten Bible). His most recent book, Scribal Laws: Exegetical Variation in the Textual Transmission of Biblical Law in the Late Second Temple Period (Mohr Siebeck, 2014), examines the degree to which early Jewish scribes deliberately altered scriptural texts for legal-exegetical purposes. In 2013, Teeter was nominated by students and named Outstanding Teacher of the Year.

From Associate Dean Hannah Peters Thomas Hollis never went to Harvard Divinity School. In fact, he lived and died three generations before HDS was founded. But few people have had a greater impact on the School, Harvard University, and American higher education as a whole.

Hollis was a wealthy London merchant who knew something of religious intolerance. As one of the most prominent Baptists in England, Hollis often found himself and his family at odds with the orthodoxy of the Church of England during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries.

He had heard through relatives and others of the liberties enjoyed by his fellow Baptists in New England, and of the college in Cambridge where religious liberalism was on the rise. He struck up a correspondence with the leadership there—themselves clergy—and in 1719 made what was then a major gift for “the use of pious young Students for the Ministry instructed at [Harvard] Colledg.”

Hollis was far from done. In 1721 he established the Hollis Professorship of Divinity—the first professorship in any American college. Six years later, Hollis founded the Professorship of Mathematicks and Natural Philosophy.

These gifts helped to secure Harvard’s future when the University was still young and to shape higher education throughout the New World.

The chairs Hollis funded emphasized the importance of scholars who were experts in their fields, rather than teachers of general knowledge. They also set the standard for the kind of philanthropy that has made American universities global leaders in education and research. And by creating a path for those of unorthodox religious beliefs to join the Harvard faculty, Hollis’s gift made possible the founding in 1816 of the nation’s first nonsectarian divinity school: HDS. Thomas Hollis’s legacy is visible at HDS today in the work of Karen King, one of the world’s leading scholars of early Christianity and the first woman to occupy the Hollis Professorship of Divinity. And it is also faithfully represented by the School’s supporters—our amazing alumni, whose contributions include not only their donations to HDS, but also the work they do every day to make the world a better place; and others who, like Hollis, never attended HDS but who believe deeply in our mission to advance understanding of all the world’s major religious traditions.

This year, as we celebrate the School’s bicentennial, we also mark with gratitude the support of donors like you who enable HDS to illuminate, engage, and serve the world. Thanks to you, as the late Rev. t’s hard not to be astonished by the sheer breadth

He sounds almost like the character in a popular commercial: “The World’s Most Interesting Man.” Maybe it’s no surprise, then, that Hackett, MTS ’16, has also long harbored an interest in religion and theology.

Still, many of his colleagues were shocked when the CEO stepped down in 2013 as head of the multibilliondollar Anadarko Petroleum Corp. to enroll at Harvard Divinity School. The newly minted HDS graduate says that his decision reflected a lifelong passion for valuesbased leadership.

“My mission is to change how we discuss and pursue spiritual values, not just secular ethics,” Hackett said in 2015 of his decision to come to Harvard. “HDS has helped me in many ways in that regard, including with my plans to write a book on faith and leadership, and to teach undergraduates at Rice University or the University of Texas about religion, spirituality, and ethics.”

Hackett’s already putting that mission into action.

Inspired by his experience at HDS, he turned his interest in faith and leadership into an extraordinary act of philanthropy: a $2M gift to the School in 2016

HDS Dean David N. Hempton says that the Hackett Family Fund, which will support “teaching and research of religion and ethics by HDS faculty,” particularly at Harvard College, will go a long way toward educating ethical, religiously literate professionals in all fields.

“Knowledge of religion—and devoted men and women who draw on the vast resources of the world’s traditions—can yield more effective efforts to build peace and security, work for human rights, improve public health, and make lasting progress on many other critical challenges facing leaders today,” Hempton said. “Jim and Maureen’s extraordinary gift will support the work of HDS faculty, who teach 50 percent of undergraduate religion courses and who advise over 80 percent of Harvard’s doctoral students in the field. We are deeply grateful.”

Hackett is remarkably humble for someone so successful—and so generous. It may come from his upbringing in what he describes as a pretty “normal” middle-class family in Illinois. His father was a devout Roman Catholic, but Hackett describes his mother as “skeptical of organized religion.” The combination of perspectives resulted in Hackett’s passion for his faith—and for interrogating it.

“My father looked for almost any excuse to receive the Holy Eucharist and to attend Mass and pray,” he says. “But Mom’s ‘doubting Thomas’ approach certainly helped me to explore comparative religions throughout my life.”

So, in his early 30s, he left the office of an executive to work for two years in the field and in several engineering disciplines—experience he says proved “critical” to his eventual positions as chairman,

I believe a spiritual understanding of the Bible or any other great religious scripture should inspire one’s whole life and not become simply a competitive tool in a narrow secular setting. I think this alum was trying to do good and take inspiration from great works of moral philosophy. But, after a good deal of reflection, I don’t believe I could be convinced to depend on him to steer a business properly before or during a crisis.”

Hackett enrolled at HDS as a special student in 2013, and then began full time in the School’s master of theological studies program in 2015. He says that it didn’t take long to recognize that he wasn’t in Houston anymore.

“On the first day of orientation, one of my classmates invited me to meditate with her,” he remembers. “She told me to close my eyes and hold onto her hands and we imagined another world together for 20 minutes.

I have never done that with anyone before or since. I thank her for having an open heart and showing me the way.”

At HDS, Hackett explored the lessons that religion and theology offer to leaders—whether of congregations, communities, or multinational corporations. He says that the flexibility of the School’s curriculum and the

The alumnus now of two of Harvard’s graduate schools, Hackett enthusiastically supports crossfaculty collaboration and President Drew Faust’s goal of “One Harvard.” He says that the aim of the Hackett Family Fund is to keep HDS—and Harvard—in a “preeminent academic position.”

“A major academic university must be diversified enough to gain and keep its reputation,” he says. “That fact often leads to selected schools within the same university having to indirectly support the good work of other less prosperous schools. One Harvard—and President Faust, particularly—is best equipped to make decisions on which schools should get the proper direct and indirect support.”

Hackett says that he still plans to write a book on faith and leadership, though as a first-person narrative rather than as a “how to” business book. He says that he hopes to encourage business leaders to look at their professions as “sacred missions.”
