Welcome to a new century.

In 2016–17, Harvard Divinity School marked 200 years of excellence in the study of religion.

We considered the legacy of scholars like Paul Tillich and Elizabeth Schüssler Fiorenza, Frank Moore Cross and Karen King, Wilfred Cantwell Smith and Diana Eck. We celebrated the work and impact of our alumni with a special series of Divinity Dialogues held around the country and with a reunion that brought hundreds of graduates back to campus. Most of all, we showcased the long process of opening to new voices and new ideas that is the hallmark of the School today.

In the years ahead, HDS will continue to interrogate—and often destabilize—assumptions about religion, culture, and identity. At the same time, we will create new language, new narratives, and new theologies that serve as the basis of our graduates’ efforts for positive change. In a word, we will seek in all we do to make a world of difference through: ■

Cornel West

SHINING A LIGHT ON AMERICA’S ‘SPIRITUAL BLACKOUT’ Cornel West considers the state of U.S. democracy—and the role that HDS can play

O

ne of the country’s most prominent and provocative democratic intellectuals, Cornel West taught at Yale, the University of Paris, Harvard, Princeton, and most recently Union Theological Seminary before returning to HDS last January as Professor of the Practice of Public Philosophy. His spring semester course, “American Democracy,” co-taught with Harvard Law School professor Roberto Unger, addressed the rise of inequality and nationalism in the United States through the lenses of class, race, and identity, and suggested ways to work for institutional change. He shared his thoughts about the “escalating spiritual blackout” in American politics, what can be done to counteract it, and the role that Harvard Divinity School can play.

HDS: How do you characterize this moment in American democracy?

CORNEL WEST: Well, I think that we certainly live in a moment of escalating spiritual blackout. There’s a relative eclipse of integrity, honesty, decency, and courage.

American democracy’s always had ups and downs, but we’ve also had institutional sources to produce fightback in regard to the civic virtue, in regard to visionary energy and to courageous witness. We do have some fightback in the country now, but I think there is a kind of fatigue setting in. It’s an open question as to whether we have enough for what needs to be done, to shatter the carelessness and indifference toward the poor and vulnerable.

HDS: You use a term to describe a coming together of the political and the spiritual: democratic soulcraft. Can you unpack that a little bit? For instance, what’s our role and our responsibility to that work as a divinity school?

CORNEL WEST: I think Harvard Divinity School has a certain calling, in a multireligious mode, to accent love, empathy, and compassion and resist any double standards. No tradition gets a pass. If Christians are talking about Jesus but are mistreating Jews, serious critique must be brought to bear. If Hindus, including Gandhi, are not coming to terms with our untouchable brothers and sisters, then serious criticism must be brought to bear. We can go right down the line: Buddhists, Muslims, and so on.

It’s a matter of bearing witness with more consistency and a spiritual richness that calls into question self-righteousness, and yet also refuses to allow despair to have the last word. I mean, that’s the important thing. Our role as a divinity school is never to allow for despair and cynicism to have the last word. It doesn’t mean that we don’t wrestle with the darkness, but we don’t allow it to have the last word.

The 32nd chapter of Genesis is Jacob wrestling at night with the angel of death. Even in the bleakest situation, you look for the best in humanity.

Since the election of 2016, we’ve seen the best of America. That’s what the International March of Women was all about. That’s what the march in the airports was all about in defense of our immigrant brothers and sisters. That’s what support of the Black Lives Matter movement is about. It’s a spiritual and moral awakening.

At the same time, we don’t ever want to fetishize President Trump. He’s made in the image of God. He is an expression of American culture. He’s a fellow citizen. He’s a human being. The last thing we want to do is to demonize him in the belief that the rest of us are not responsible for the state of our country today. No. All of us are responsible.

HDS: You recently wrote in The Guardian about the need for “a classconscious multi-racial [political] party attuned to anti-sexist, antihomophobic and anti-militaristic issues and grounded in ecological commitments . . . . ” That description sounds a lot like the learning environment we try create at HDS. How are we doing?

CORNEL WEST: You’ve got two things going on at Harvard Divinity School. You’ve got the shift from the old liberal Protestant model that was in place for so long and the move to embracing other religious traditions. At the same time, you also have this shift from a kind of faith-based engagement with the world—albeit with scholarly tools—to one that’s a more scholarly study of religion.

We’ve been in this transition for a while, but I think we’ve still got a number of challenges. You can’t really have a serious engagement with a variety of different religious traditions without there being a vibrancy and a vitality within the various faith traditions that are coming together. That’s one of the real challenges of any institution that’s concerned about comparative religious orientations or ecumenical dialogue. And I think the trends in higher education right now can make it difficult for us to stay in contact with the best of our past that is not translatable in market terms. We’ve got great traditions that must be preserved, but it’s hard to preserve them if it’s always a matter of looking at what the payoff is. It’s a problem not just with Harvard Divinity School but also with every major institution of higher learning in a capitalist society.

HDS: You talk a lot about the need for “institutional capacity” so that there are concrete alternatives to the current politics and social order for ordinary citizens. Here we are at HDS. We’re an independent school. We’re also part of one of the world’s great research universities. How can we contribute?

CORNEL WEST: It’s just a matter of being more intentional about it. It’s not a question of narrow ideology or petty politics. It’s really a question of spiritual values and virtues, like what it really means to care and have deep concern for the vulnerable. How is that reflected in our curriculum? What does it really mean to engage in a quest for truth on which no one of us and no tradition has a monopoly?

How does that quest take us outside of ourselves and force us to examine our traditions and communities and nations in new and sometimes painful ways? If you have resources and you’re just using the resources to reorient and reiterate something that you’re already tied to, you don’t have enough Socratic energy at work.

HDS: Another challenge for the School is how to engage with voices across the political spectrum. You engage pretty fearlessly with figures on the right, from your former Princeton colleague Robert George to Fox News host Sean Hannity. If HDS is trying to create a class-conscious, multi-racial, anti-sexist, anti-homophobic, anti-militaristic environment, how can we open up to people who are not all those things?

CORNEL WEST: I think we have to. The world is made up of a lot of different people. America is made up of a lot of different people.

Our families are made up of a lot of different people. The notion that somehow we can stay either in a bubble or in a homogeneous context and not engage people who have very deep disagreements with what we fundamentally believe I think is simply a form of escapism. We have to be in contact with each other.

People who are deeply conservative are still my brothers and my sisters. There’s a human connection with them. More than that, I believe that I can learn something from them and I try to listen very closely. Now, I disagree with them about a whole host of issues, even after I learn and listen, but that doesn’t mean that I’m not empowered by engaging them. I hope that they are empowered by engaging me. The last thing we want is just some kind of narrow, ideological homogeneity that reinforces a sense of selfrighteousness.

I’ve always taught classes with conservative thinkers. I had debates with [Yale Divinity School Professor] Paul Holmer way back in the early 1980s. He was one of the first theologians to critically engage in a very negative way black theology. It was intense. It was beautiful.

We had a deep friendship, even though I thought he was wrong most of the time, and he thought I was wrong most of the time. Robbie George and I teach classes together. We travel the country. I also believe in debating Jewish conservatives who think I’m too critical of Israel. I’m having a debate with [Harvard Law School’s] Alan Dershowitz pretty soon. I’ve always debated black conservatives.

Shelby Steele and I debated all around the country. So, I believe in dialogue, not in any naive sense. I just believe that it’s part and parcel of a Socratic and prophetic way of being in the world.

HDS: Along those lines, you’ve talked about “prophetic fire” as a “hypersensitivity to the suffering of others that generates a righteous indignation that results in the willingness to live and die for freedom.” I’m wondering where you see that prophetic fire today. Can it be taught?

CORNEL WEST: There’s no doubt that it’s something that can be taught, primarily by example. We’ve got to replace market-driven celebrities with spiritually laden exemplars—and the exemplars make all the difference in the world.

A lot of prophetic fire is at work in terms of defending our precious trans people. We see it in concerns about domestic violence. We see it in concerns about working people, where certain elements of the trade unions are trying to come alive. We see it in concerns about civil liberties or the persecution of the Baha’i, the persecution of Jehovah’s Witnesses, the persecution of Christians or Muslims or Jews. So, there are plenty of articulations of prophetic fire.

The problem is that it’s hard for all these expressions to come together to form some kind of overlapping unity or overlapping commonality and have a larger impact. Right now, it’s still so scattered and dispersed. It would be wonderful, for example, if you had people who are fighting against anti-Jewish hatred, fighting against anti-Arab hatred, in the same context.

HDS: Finally, we’ve just finished celebrating the School’s bicentennial. There have been many prophetic voices in our history—Ralph Waldo Emerson, Theodore Parker, Paul Tillich, James Luther Adams, to name only a few. As we enter our third century, do we have a responsibility to try to produce those kinds of leaders?

CORNEL WEST: I don’t think the divinity school is the kind of institutional machine to generate prophetic voices. You’ve got to be open to prophetic voices throughout the various traditions of religion, but all voices are not prophetic. That’s the difference between a school that’s open to robust dialogue and inquiry, and a particular church, or temple, or mosque, or political party, or ideological gathering. It’s the latter where, if you want certain kind of prophetic voice, you’d be much more explicit about it. At a school, you want conversation.

Now, if Harvard Divinity School is going to be concerned about quests for truth, quests for goodness, quests for beauty, quests for the holy, you’re going to have a number of prophetic voices. But I don’t think it’s the end aim of the School. I think that’s a little bit too much for any university. You can’t confuse the vocation of one’s own interpretation of a tradition with the vocation of an institution as a whole. I mean, Harvard is still going to be Harvard!

A ‘PECULIAR ALCHEMY’ New director talks about the future of the Center for the Study of World Religions

O

n July 1, Professor of Early Christian Thought Charles Stang became the seventh director of Harvard Divinity School’s Center for the Study of World Religions, succeeding Parkman Professor of Divinity Francis X. Clooney, S.J. Stang joined the HDS faculty in 2008 after earning his doctor of theology degree from the School the same year, and since then he has been a member both of the CSWR community and of the center’s advisory board. A scholar of asceticism, monasticism, and mysticism in Eastern Christianity, Stang recently discussed his vision for the CSWR, which in 2018 will celebrate the 60th anniversary of its founding.

HDS: CSWR was founded to establish a living dialogue not only between practitioners of different religions but also between practitioners and scholars. That was a radical proposition in 1958. Today, it’s more or less the mission of Harvard Divinity School. Why do we still need a CSWR and what should its role be at HDS? CHARLES STANG: Although the mission of the CSWR has spread to HDS more broadly, there’s still something about the unique residential community here that isn’t replicated across campus. It’s this idea of having scholars and practitioners—and, of course, scholar-practitioners—at all stages of their careers living together. It’s a different kind of experiment than can happen in classrooms, one that constantly renews itself with every new cohort of residents. It’s hard to articulate what that peculiar alchemy is in the residential community. As the new director, I’m eager to participate in it robustly.

At the same time, it’s true that we no longer need to carry the banner as if HDS weren’t studying world religions. So, I’m thinking about how the CSWR can provide space and resources for students and faculty and other scholars, both at Harvard and abroad, to pause from the day-to-day, week-to-week execution of HDS’s mission and say, “What is the future of the study of religion, and where are we?” I don’t think anybody clearly knows the answers to those questions.

HDS: Say more, if you can, about the center’s “peculiar alchemy.” There’s been a real explosion in online education—best exemplified, perhaps, by HDS’s own Diane Moore, whose HarvardX course, “World Religions through Their Scriptures,” attracted over 200,000 participants from nearly 200 countries around the world. Why is it still so important to have people, particularly people of different religious traditions, actually living with each other at a time when we can “virtually” connect with almost anyone anywhere?

CHARLES STANG: Because we have bodies. My hesitation about online learning is that, although it can be face-to-face and fairly sophisticated in bringing people together, there is still something absolutely unique about being in physical proximity to each other. That’s where I think the alchemy happens. And just as you can’t be married to someone or raise a child entirely through digital means, you can’t live in community just by digital means.

The other thing is that, while there’s an increase in online learning, there’s also been a rise in interest in intentional communities. All around the country, people want to live together in spiritual communities that often don’t fit any classical religious identity. We’ve been doing that at CSWR for more than two generations. We have wisdom to lend that movement. It’s also an opportunity for us to reboot, refresh, and rethink what we’re about.

“We are in the grip of a particular ideology around race, religion, and nationalism here in the U.S. and we’re seeing it in other countries as well. I want to lean into that and bring the resources of HDS to bear on those questions.”

HDS: You also mentioned questions about the future of the study of religion. What’s your take on where the field is going—and where the CSWR fits in?

CHARLES STANG: Religious studies as an academic discipline began, to some extent, by looking for great common structures across religious traditions. In the wake of that, there was a retreat into particularity and I think we haven’t quite found our way into a study of religion that can ask some of these questions across religious traditions. I think that the CSWR can offer resources and a space where students and scholars can convene and have a conversation about what they think the study of religion needs to be in the future.

I’d like us to be a kind of think tank for HDS and wider Harvard.

HDS: Your predecessor, Frank Clooney, was a scholar of comparative religion and theology and brought that focus to much of the programming here. Where do you hope to take the center in the years ahead?

CHARLES STANG: I am probably going to introduce a number of themes which I’m hoping to carry across my four-year term.

Let me walk you through them.

I want to do a programming thread on race, religion, and nationalism. I can’t think of anything more pressing or urgent.

We are in the grip of a particular ideology around race, religion, and nationalism here in the United States, and we’re seeing it in other countries as well. I want to lean into that and bring the resources of HDS to bear on those questions.

It’s also crucial to me that the CSWR include both Christianity and America in its purview. This is, in some sense, work that Frank initiated. The CSWR can’t just be the think tank about other religions. We have to turn all our best intellectual gifts on ourselves.

In this country, that means turning them on the predominant religious tradition of Christianity and the way that religion and politics are correlated here.

Another thread is time and technology. I’m fascinated by the way that we experience and conceive of time and the degree to which people are lamenting how there doesn’t seem to be enough.

It’s clearly not just a problem of the hours in the day. We’ve

somehow changed our temporality, and it’s pretty clear that technology has something to do with that. It’s also pretty clear that religious traditions can help widen our conception and experience of time, whether it’s the liturgical calendar of the Jewish year, the weekly Eucharist, a Buddhist mandala—there are all of these resources and other ways of conceiving time. Now, I don’t want to sound as if somehow we need to go back to the pre-technological, because there is no pre-technological. There’s no moment in which humans weren’t imagining time. But let’s convene a conversation about it. I think this is an acute problem in our twenty-first-century life together.

HDS: Can you give us a sense of some of the people you hope to bring to the CSWR? CHARLES STANG: Well, I’m thrilled to say that the writer and environmentalist Terry Tempest Williams and her husband Brooke have already joined the CSWR community. She participated in our first panel discussion of the year on landscape in the study of religion. The Greeley Lecture on Social Justice is coming up later this year. I’m in conversation with colleagues at Rice University and the Esalen Institute to host a conference here next year on the spiritual but not religious movement. I have some people in mind but can’t confirm yet. I will say this: I want to shoot for the stars.

HDS: You talk about the CSWR including Christianity in its purview.

It’s a reminder that Christianity has always been a global religion and, with its growth in Africa and Asia, will only become more of one in the decades ahead.

CHARLES STANG: One of the things I developed early in my time here was a course about Christianity and the Silk Road, which was very much an attempt to show that ancient Christianity was not just a Mediterranean or European religion. It spread east into Mesopotamia, Persia, central Asia, and China, by the seventh and eighth centuries. So there’s a very rich and ancient story to be told about global Christianity, which is often obscured by the fact that Christianity is regarded as the purview of Europe and the “New World.”

Along those lines, I’m really excited that Jim Hackett, MTS ’16, gave a gift to the CSWR to promote the study of global Christianity. I just had in my office earlier today a Chinese doctoral student who’s going to spend the fall semester with me working on seventh- and eighthcentury Christian texts from a western oasis in China. Thanks to Jim, we have the resources to do this kind of work now.

At the same time, I’m fascinated by the fact that Islam in Europe is going to be a new chapter in the history of religions. Islam in America is going to be a new chapter in the history of Islam.

American Buddhism is a different thing. We’re no longer in this situation where Buddhism is over here, and Hinduism is over here and Christianity is right here. Those traditions exist side by side, and that requires a different sort of attention.

HDS: Finally, at age 42, you’re one of the youngest people to lead the CSWR since it was founded in 1958. You’re recently tenured.

You’re doing important research in early Christianity. Why did you feel like this point in your career was the right time for you to take the director’s job?

CHARLES STANG: I got into the study of religion, first and foremost, because I was interested in some big questions, and I felt like religious studies was a place where I could explore them.

Over the past 15 years, I developed a focus on early Christianity, and specifically eastern Christianity. You’ve got to go into the mineshaft, so to speak, and find a vein to mine if you want to come out with some really fine ore.

Now, I think there are some scholars who go deeper and deeper into their mineshaft in order to get at bigger questions. I wanted to go back and think broadly again about the study of religion and how my expertise fits into this field. What do I have to contribute? When I learned that Frank was thinking of stepping down, it seemed like a way for me to step back into that space.

I’m not going to make the Center for the Study of World Religions the Center for Eastern Christian Studies. I have no interest in doing that. But I do feel like I have a degree of freedom and support here to dig into some of the questions that brought me into this field to begin with. I’m pretty excited about the new horizons, not least of all because there are other people who are excited by them too.

Sana Saeed grew up in England and has lived in the United States, Pakistan, and Japan. With master’s degrees in conflict resolution and peace studies, Saeed has worked on issues of religious discrimination at the Interfaith Alliance, studied violence between Buddhists and Muslims in Myanmar, and provided training on negotiations, peacebuilding, and conflict resolution for the International Organization on Migration.

She is passionate about community organizing and working with youth.

Steve Núñez wanted a challenge after graduating from high school in Wilmington, NC, so he joined the U.S. Army’s elite Special Forces and earned his Green Beret at only 20 years old. Driven by the Special Forces’ motto, De Oppresso Liber (To Free the Oppressed), he served in Central America and Afghanistan.

Núñez returned home for college, where he studied the intersections of philosophy, religion, identity, and violence. Today, as an MTS candidate, he studies, religion, ethics, and politics at HDS and at Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Law School. Núñez still lives by the Special Forces creed and hopes after he graduates to pursue a doctoral degree while working with politically marginalized groups.

“I don’t think that we need a reward to do good; we should do good for the sake of doing good. I try to ‘walk through life knowing that my footsteps matter,’ as [Rice University professor] Anthony Pinn says, doing what I can to make the world a better place.”

BENJAMIN CROCKETT, MTS ’18 A virtual reality (VR) director, Benjamin Crockett came to divinity school to study artistic interpretations of sacred material. In the process, he began to explore VR’s ability to liberate an audience from the conventional video frame. The master of theological studies program enables him to combine work in religion at HDS with VR production at MIT and social entrepreneurship at Harvard Business School. His summer field education experience took him to Rome, where he made 360 VR documentaries for the Vatican-sponsored television network EWTN that illustrate the Catholic Church’s efforts in communities around the world.

MARGAUX FITOUSSI, MTS ’17 Margaux Fitoussi helped expand an early warning network to isolated communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic, enabling first responders to work more effectively in the midst of conflict. Her interest in religion and media led her to HDS and to make El Hara, a film about a Jewish community in Tunisia, now screening at festivals across the country. After HDS, she will pursue doctoral study in anthropology at Columbia University.

“I always knew I wanted to do a PhD in anthropology, but I wanted the background in religious studies. What’s been so invigorating about HDS is this ability to take half your classes and to explore in other departments. That’s a great benefit of the master’s programs.”

WILLIAM WILLIAMSON, MDIV ’18 A foster child and adopted son of a preacher, Will Williamson “fell in love with religious life” growing up in a Unitarian Universalist congregation in Asheville, NC. After working as a wilderness therapy guide, Williamson enrolled in HDS and set out on the ordination path to UU ministry. He plans to become a chaplain in the United States military when he graduates.

“It is deeply fulfilling for me to be part of a tradition that gives one practices to deal with life. Furthermore, I think religion is the only institution that sits people down and says, ‘We’re going to just talk about what it means to be a good, morally righteous person.’ I think that’s incredibly important.”

IDEALISM IN ACTION The remarkable life and career of David Hysong

D

avid Hysong, MDiv ’15, finished his master’s degree in intellectual history in 2011 and found himself with a year’s lag time before he planned to enter the U.S. Navy. He was young, good looking, and smart. Most people in his position would probably have kicked back, gotten a job to pay the bills, and had some fun.

David Hysong is not “most people.”

At 23, Hysong joined the Christian human rights organization International Justice Mission (IJM) as an investigator.

He traveled to Cambodia and worked with IJM’s Frenchsponsored partners Action Pour Les Enfants to compile evidence on the perpetrators of sexual slavery.

“There are 30 million people enslaved in the world today,” Hysong asserts. “IJM had recently had two investigators killed in the line of duty. They needed young men who were willing to do that sort of work. Honestly, I just packed up my bags and left. I figured the rest out when I got there.”

Hysong’s time in Cambodia is just one episode in a remarkable life and career journey that includes admission to West Point, Navy SEAL training, thousands of miles on a cross-country motorcycle trip, near-death experiences, and now a biotech start up that’s earned him mention in Forbes Magazine’s list of the best young entrepreneurs. All before his 30th birthday.

“My father was a highly decorated military pilot,” Hysong explains. “He instilled an idealism in me, but an idealism manifest in action. It’s very much a part of my makeup. I want to be on the front lines. I want to have a direct impact.”

In contrast to his later accomplishments, Hysong’s adult life started almost inauspiciously. He attended Transylvania University, one of the country’s top liberal arts colleges and graduated in 2009 with a triple major in economics, philosophy, and French literature, but says he still “wasn’t really proud of what I’d done.” Hysong applied to the United States Military Academy at West Point for a second bachelor’s degree and won admission but decided instead to pursue a master’s degree in intellectual history at St. John’s College in Annapolis. It was there that he connected with students at the neighboring U.S. Naval Academy and eventually applied for the Navy’s elite Special Operations Group, the “Sea, Air, and Land” Teams (SEALs).

“There was a prestige in getting into West Point, but as far as my development as an individual, I felt like St. John’s was a better place to cultivate that,” he says. “So I ended up right next door to the Naval Academy and found a synergy between one of the best academic educations that I could have had at St. Johns and then also physically going after special operations.”

As a civilian, Hysong was required to do a long mentorship program to prepare him for the SEALs. The time between his acceptance and actual selection enabled him to join IJM and go to Cambodia. His antislavery work—and very nearly his life—came to an end, however, when a tour bus barreled into him on a motorcycle trip through the jungle. During his long and painful recuperation, Hysong’s thoughts turned to religion. He wanted to explore his own conservative Christian roots, which included a grandfather who was a Nazarene minister. Having had a taste of international human rights work, he was also interested in the nexus of religion, ethics, and politics. On a dare from a friend, he applied to HDS in 2012 for enrollment that fall.

“I did a 12,000-mile motorcycle trip alone while I worked on writing a book on St. Augustine, Thomas Edward Lawrence, and confession framed by the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur under the supervision of my mentor and advisor, Professor Charles Stang,” he says. “I circumnavigated the United States, worked on a buffalo ranch, and basically just wrote a bunch.”

“I was in between surgeries,” he says. “I had use of one hand.

I typed my application with only my pointer finger, took the GRE, and ultimately got in.”

“After I passed out, I went to medical,” he says. “They gave me the choice: ‘Well, you can quit or you can keep going.’

I kept going.”

In Cambodia Hysong witnessed deep suffering that caused him to question many of the religious assumptions he’d grown up with. HDS enabled him to study religious history— particularly Christianity and Judaism—and look critically at his own theology. He was also challenged by classmates with backgrounds, experiences, and points of view that differed sharply from his own.

After some buffalo wrangling in Montana, Hysong returned to HDS for his final year and underwent testing as a followup to his collapse. It was then that doctors discovered he had adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare form of head and neck cancer. His military career was over before it started. His future was uncertain. Just as he had during SEAL selection, however, Hysong pushed on.

“HDS was a much more liberal, pluralistic community than the one I came from,” he says. “I figured that if I came out of there with a place to stand that included faith, then I would feel pretty strongly about the validity of that.”

“I got treated at Massachusetts General Hospital but kept going,” he says. “I stayed in all my classes and was working 40 hours a week and coaching undergraduate club soccer at Harvard. I finished up treatment and graduated on time.”

HDS also made possible what Hysong calls some “crazy” field education experiences. During the summer after his first year in school, Hysong worked with the SEALs on a project that integrated a strong ethical identity into the group’s warrior culture. During the academic year, he joined the team of seminarians at Harvard’s Memorial Church under Pusey Minister Jonathan Walton. The following summer, he got back on a motorcycle for the first time since the accident in Cambodia for a project that was half travelogue, half spiritual pilgrimage.

After graduation in May 2015, Hysong considered medical school. He took preparatory courses while working 80-hour weeks at two jobs to pay off medical and student debts. The schedule, in the wake of cancer treatment and graduate school, began to burn him out. At Stang’s urging, Hysong took a break for a few weeks. The clouds cleared and he was inspired to undertake what he calls “an impossible task”: a biotech start up that searched for cures to rare cancers like his. He prayed about it, made the decision to move forward, and things began to fall into place.

In the month between traveling and ranching, Hysong participated in the grueling selection process for Navy SEALs, a month of suffering designed to push candidates to their physical and psychological limits. He completed the process successfully, despite collapsing at one point from pulmonary edema, the result of long swims in polluted water.

“It turned out that I had coached a soccer club that included the son of Gene Williams, the man who grew [biotech firm] Genzyme’s therapeutics portfolio from $3 billion to $30 billion,” he says. “He realized that progress in rare cancers would come from patients that can motivate scientists and others around the disease. We had coffee and Gene said, ‘David, do this and do this right now, and I’ll help you.’”

Two weeks later, in New York City, Hysong was at a Milken Institute conference on rare cancers where he raised $1.5M to found Shepherd Therapeutics. His Genzyme and Harvard connections enabled him to assemble a world-class team of scientists. The firm’s goal is to find cures for the more than 250 rare cancers that make up 42 percent of cancer diagnoses in the United States. Hysong says that Shepherd is well on its way.

“We’ve raised close to $6.5M and we’re only just now finalizing our product portfolio,” he says. “The cool thing is, a lot of the times, therapeutics are approved when they represent a 30 percent survival rate or 40 percent survival rate. For the diseases we’re looking at, our preliminary data show about an 80 percent survival rate. We really think we’re going to be very successful and save a lot of lives.”

His cancer in remission, Hysong looks to the future. Given his achievements so far, it should come as no surprise that he’s set his sights high. While Shepherd is currently developing the type of therapeutics that would make it a successful company—both financially and in terms of lives saved—Hysong is also in the process of setting up two nonprofits, one a private foundation and one a public charity. He wants these to become the world’s first nonprofit pharmaceutical companies—organizations focused on the therapies that will save lives rather than generate big profits.

“There’s a lot of opportunity to save lives with medicines that just won’t make money and so aren’t an economically viable path for business,” he says. “The American public donates billions of dollars every year to cancer research. We want to bring some of that money to bear on actually developing life-saving therapies for rare cancers, not just research. So my hope is that in five years we have a billion-dollar endowment, we’re raising a ton of money from the U.S. public, and we’ve saved a million lives.”

THE REVOLUTIONARY Stephanie Spellers works to transform the Episcopal Church through listening and love

S

tephanie Spellers, MTS ’96, jumped enthusiastically into the culture wars raging on Wake Forest’s campus in the early 1990s. An African American woman at a southern school that had only recently begun to admit significant numbers of minority students, Spellers frequently found herself at odds with her classmates. When she and Wake’s small group of college Democrats gathered on the campus quad to celebrate Bill Clinton’s victory in the 1992 presidential election, they soon found themselves surrounded by an angry mob.

“Go home welfare mother!” a man shouted at her as they locked eyes.

Spellers doesn’t say how she answered the man. She tells the story today, not with resentment or rage, but with curiosity, compassion, and, perhaps most of all, a plea for people on all sides of the political divide to stop shouting at each other and to start listening.

“If he felt all of that in 1992, what did he feel when Barack Obama became president?” she asked in her 2016 TEDx talk, “The Revolutionary Art of Listening.” “The very moment that I feel like I finally gained my country, did he lose his? And will I ever know? Probably not, because . . . a long time ago we stopped listening. I think it’s time for us to start.”

As one of three canons to the presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church (think executive vice president), the Rev. Canon Stephanie Spellers works to transform the Episcopal Church from an institution to a movement through the power of listening and love. She guides the church’s work around racial justice and healing, as well as evangelism, church planting, ethnic ministries, domestic poverty, and creation care. It’s a big portfolio, and she wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I love it,” she says. “I suppose there aren’t a lot of people who could inhabit all these worlds comfortably, but I’m just grateful to God that I had this hodgepodge of experiences that make all these ministries feel like home.”

Spellers grew up with a passion for social justice, but not for ministry and Christianity. In fact, as the child of a single-parent, working-class family in the American South, Spellers grew up resenting Christianity as divisive, even harmful. She studied Buddhism as an undergraduate at Wake Forest, a Southern Baptist school where she felt like she “never made sense.”

Encouraged by one of her professors, and by a desire to explore “big questions” she enrolled at HDS in 1993.

“I just knew I loved having conversations about religion,” she says. “I wanted to think about the role of religion in public life and in movements for social change. I never want to stop being a part of that conversation.”

At HDS, Spellers studied with theologians like Harvey Cox and Sarah Coakley, whose ideas enabled her to discover an “expansive Christianity.” The conversations she had with her classmates not only expanded her understanding of religion, but also enabled her to think about how to merge theory with practice to work for a better world.

“I remember being in the kitchen in Rockefeller Hall after going to a panel discussion that included Meg Guider, who was a nun in El Salvador when one of the great purges of Jesuit priests occurred,” she says. “There was Jennifer Hughes, a scholar who had been deeply involved in the Catholic worker movement. There was Reza Aslan. There were so many of us.

We talked about how to make theology a way of life—to go from ‘God talk’ to ‘God walk.’ We were working it out in real time. That just doesn’t happen in every seminary.”

Spellers also encountered Christians at HDS who shared her commitment to social justice, as well as an LGBTQ community that refused to be kicked out of the tradition—even as they were being kicked out of their churches and kicked off the ordination path.

“The people of HDS blew my mind and my heart open,” she says. “They thought that Christianity should be subversive, it should be transgressive. I hadn’t seen very many Christians actually living that out, and I saw them everywhere at HDS. A lot of my resistance just crumbled in the presence of a faith that was so generous.”

Crumbling resistance did not equal a call to ministry—at least not yet. After Spellers graduated, she put her MTS degree to work for the Knoxville (TN) News Sentinel as the paper’s first dedicated religion editor and reporter. She missed the Christian community she’d discovered in Boston, however, so she moved back after a year and returned to HDS, this time as a member of the School’s admissions staff. She attended a Lutheran church, where she was baptized, and she began some faith-based community organizing in Boston’s inner city.

She took a trip to New York City one weekend and ended up at the Limelight, a nightclub housed in a converted Episcopal church. On the dance floor there, “spinning like a whirling dervish,” Spellers says she had a vision of “liberation, transformation, and celebration,” and of a spiritual community where “young folks, queer folks, people who think church has nothing to do with them” could feel at home.

“Later on that morning, I wrote 25 pages in my journal about becoming a priest,” she says.

“I came back home and I started knocking on the doors of Episcopal churches in Cambridge.

I said ‘This is gonna sound crazy, but I think I’m supposed to be an Episcopal priest.’ The priest at St. Peter’s in Central Square said, ‘Come on in.’ They were the ones who sponsored me for ordination. ”

“The only reason people are going to be a part of a church or any faith community is if we are smoldering, if we are blazing with the love of a God who is alive. If we’re not, don’t be surprised that they just keep walking, because everything else church gives them, they can get somewhere else.”

After three years and an MDiv at Episcopal Divinity School, Spellers made her vision a reality with The Crossing, an initiative of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Boston.

As founding priest, she reached out to people who felt marginalized not only by the church, but also by society.

In so doing, she developed a passion for reconciliation and learned the value of listening.

“We listened to homeless people, to poor people, to people who can’t just read from a book in order to worship, to queer folk, to brown and black folk, to Asian folk, and especially to young people,” she says. “We welcomed them all, and for three years I did not preach once in that church. I was the priest and we worshiped every week, but they did the preaching. It was a different way of doing church.”

The experience yielded Radical Welcome, the first of several books Spellers authored, and in 2012 she left Boston to serve the Episcopal Church in New York City. As canon for mission vitality in the Diocese of Long Island, Spellers worked to weave the church into relationship with one of the most diverse areas in the country (the diocese includes all of Brooklyn and Queens). She also began teaching at the General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church in Manhattan, where she taught and directed programs in mission and reconciliation.

Along the way, Spellers also served as chaplain to the Episcopal Church’s House of Bishops and co-chair of the Standing Commission on Mission and Evangelism. In December of 2015, the newly minted Presiding Bishop Michael Curry hired her as his canon for evangelism and reconciliation.

“Bishop Curry convinced me to come onto the church-wide international staff and help to spearhead work around what we call the Jesus movement: following Jesus into loving, liberating, life-giving relationships with God, with each other, and with creation,” she explains.

“My job is to work with extraordinary, visionary teams to reform the whole Episcopal Church into a movement and not just an institution. And it’s happening.”

While Spellers is an optimist and an evangelist, she is also aware of the generations-long decline in religious affiliation that has trimmed the ranks of mainline Protestant churches.

She says that the issue is more fundamental than a crisis of relevance—it’s about the failure of Christian denominations to adapt to the cultural shifts of the last 50 years and, most of all, to be in an authentic, vital relationship with God. The solution, she says, is not better music or a church Facebook page or even social justice work. It’s love.

“The only reason people are going to be a part of a church or any faith community is if we are smoldering, if we are blazing with the love of a God who is alive,” she says. “If we’re not, don’t be surprised that they just keep walking, because everything else church gives them, they can get somewhere else. They aren’t rejecting religion; they’re rejecting churches that promise a divine encounter we’re not fully in touch with ourselves.”

Spellers’ mission is to help the Episcopal Church to fall more deeply in love with the God who shakes people to their foundations and transforms their lives. She quotes the writer Annie Dillard to emphasize her point: “It is madness to wear ladies’ straw hats and velvet hats to church; we should all be wearing crash helmets. Ushers should issue life preservers and signal flares; they should lash us to our pews. For the sleeping god may wake someday and take offense, or the waking god may draw us out to where we can never return.”

“We ask too little of God and expect too little of the encounter with a living God,” she continues. “Does anything matter to you enough to give your life for it? Does God matter enough that we get swept into radical, sacrificial, life-altering love and solidarity? Every now and then there have been Christians who could stand up and say ‘Yes,’ and embody that. We’re in a moment right now where we need those revolutionaries—not just Christians, but people of faith, period.”

DEAN’S DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD The Dean’s Distinguished Service Award recognizes exemplary service to and support of Harvard Divinity School. Recipients have a deep understanding of HDS and its mission, and they serve as visible advocates for the School, helping to strategically advance HDS and the Dean’s priorities.

Susan Shallcross Swartz Susan Swartz shares her passion for nature and the environment by exploring the landscape through potent color and richly layered abstract paintings. With her evocation of coastal splendor and mountain drama, Swartz follows in the tradition of the great German painters nineteenth-century Romantic sage Caspar David Friedrich and twentieth-century icon Gerhard Richter. She is inspired by the intersection of art, nature, and spirituality.

Swartz’s distinctive style has developed from realism to contemporary abstraction and has been recognized with numerous solo exhibitions. Her work has been featured in solo exhibitions at the Ludwig Museum in Budapest, Hungary; the Ludwig Museum in Koblenz, Germany; the Kollegienkirche in Salzburg, Austria; the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC; the Springville Museum of Art in Springville, Utah; the Utah Museum of Fine Arts in Salt Lake City; and the International Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland. This fall, Swartz’s work will be featured in a solo exhibition at the Ludwig Museum at the State Russian Museum (Marble Palace) in St. Petersburg, Russia.

In 2018 Swartz’s work will be shown at the new Manetti Shrem Museum at the University of California, Davis. Catalogues of her work have been published in conjunction with many of these exhibitions.

In 2005, Swartz was published in the Gibbs Smith collector’s book Painters of the Wasatch Mountains, alongside Wasatch Mountain School artists Maynard Dixon, Albert Bierstadt, and Thomas Moran. That same year she was honored by Harvard Divinity School for a career that continues to blend artistry and faith. Swartz was the Official Olympic Environmental Artist for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. In 2008, she was honored with the Independent Publisher Book Award for her hardcover book Natural Revelations.

The underlying energy and tension in Swartz’s work hints of her complex relationship with the natural world. Her decade-long struggle with mercury poisoning and Lyme disease transformed her as an artist and as a citizen. She now works from a place of impassioned reverence for the earth and of fierce determination to inform and educate.

Partnering with Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Louie Psihoyos, and Jane Goodall on a number of their environmental campaigns, Swartz also supports the vision and production of documentary films that seek to shed light on social and environmental injustice. Films touched by her include Academy Award winners and nominees and Sundance Film Festival award winners.

Swartz serves on the National Advisory Board of the National Museum of Women in the Arts and on the Dean’s Council of Harvard Divinity School, and she is the cofounder of the charitybased Christian Center of Park City. She is on the board of the Utah Film Center and is a founding member of the documentary film organization Impact Partners.

GOMES HONOREES Selected annually by the HDS Alumni/Alumnae Council, the Peter J. Gomes STB ’68 Memorial Honors recognizes distinguished HDS alumni whose excellence in life, work, and service pays homage to the mission and values of Peter J. Gomes STB ’68 and Harvard Divinity School. Gomes Honorees represent the diversity of personal and professional paths that the School’s graduates follow.

The 2016–17 Gomes Honorees were: Rev. Dr. Charles Gilchrist Adams, BD ’64, graduated with honors from the University of Michigan and Harvard University and went on to become a doctoral fellow in Union Theological Seminary in New York City. From 1962 to 1969, Mr. Adams served as pastor of historic Concord Baptist Church in Boston, followed by an appointment as the pastor of Hartford Memorial Baptist Church in Detroit. In 1994, Mr. Adams received his second citation by Ebony magazine as one of the nation’s 15 greatest Black preachers (he was first cited in 1984). Ebony also named him as one of the top 100 most influential Black Americans. He served as president of the Detroit Branch of the NAACP in 1984 and was elected to its Executive Board in 1986, 1988, 1990, and 1992. Mr. Adams has been awarded twelve honorary doctorates from colleges and universities across the country, has spoken before the United Nations, and has received the Rabbi Martin Katzenstein Award from HDS for his “passionate and helpful interest in the lives of other people.” He served as Professor of Preaching at the Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit, Michigan, from 2000 to 2007 and was HDS’s William and Lucille Nickerson Professor of the Practice of Ethics and Ministry from July 2007 through June 2012. A prolific writer, Mr. Adams has published locally and nationally in scholarly journals and daily and weekly newspapers.

Constance H. Buchanan was from 1977 to 1997 the founding director of Harvard Divinity School’s Women’s Studies in Religion Program, an internationally recognized center for research and teaching on the interaction of religion, gender, race, and culture in societies around the globe. During those years, Ms. Buchanan was also a member of the faculty and associate dean. For six years, she was, in addition,

special assistant to President Derek Bok for his University-wide project on improving the quality of teaching and learning. In 1997, she became the senior program officer for Religion, Society, and Culture in the Knowledge, Creativity & Freedom Program of the Ford Foundation, with primary responsibility for developing the Foundation’s grant-making program in this new field. Ms. Buchanan is the author of Choosing to Lead: Women and the Crisis of American Values (Beacon Press, 1996). Her other publications include “The Anthropology of Vitality and Decline: The Episcopal Church in a Changing Society,” in Episcopal Women: Spirituality and Commitment in an American Mainline Denomination (1992); and “The Fall of Icarus: Gender, Religion, and the Aging Society,” in Shaping New Vision: Gender and Values in American Culture (1987). She co-edited with Clarissa Atkinson and Margaret Miles Shaping New Vision: Gender and Values in American Culture (1987) and Immaculate and Powerful: The Female in Sacred Image and Social Reality (1985). She holds an MA in European history from Brown University and a BA in history from Barnard College.

Mary E. Hunt, MTS ’74, is a feminist theologian who is co-founder and codirector of the Women’s Alliance for Theology, Ethics and Ritual (WATER) in Silver Spring, Maryland. A Catholic active in the women-church movement, she lectures and writes on theology, ethics, and social justice concerns.

Ms. Hunt was Adjunct Assistant Professor of Women’s Studies at Georgetown University for five years and has lectured and taught at numerous institutions. She was a research fellow at HDS’s Center for the Study of Values in Public Life in 2000–01 and has taught in summer programs at Iliff School of Theology, Pacific School of Religion, and Lancaster Theological Seminary. She is the author of Fierce Tenderness: A Feminist Theology of Friendship, which was awarded the Crossroad Women’s Studies Prize. Among her many publications are articles in the Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion, Concilium, Conscience, ReligionDispatches.org, and Mandragora. She spent several years teaching and working on women’s issues and human rights in Argentina as a participant in the Frontier Internship in Mission Program. She continues that work through WATER’s project “Women Crossing Worlds,” an ongoing exchange with Latin American women. Ms. Hunt holds a PhD from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California, as well as a master of divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley. Her undergraduate degree in theology and philosophy is from Marquette University.

David Little, ThD ’63, a research fellow at Georgetown University’s Berkley Center, is a leading authority on the history of religious freedom, ethics and human rights, and religion and conflict resolution. Mr. Little retired in 2009 as T.J. Dermot Dunphy Professor of the Practice in Religion, Ethnicity, and International Conflict at HDS and as an associate at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University.

Until summer 1999, he was senior scholar in religion, ethics, and human rights at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP). From 1996 to 1998, he was a member of the Advisory Committee to the State Department on Religious Freedom Abroad. Mr. Little has held faculty positions at Yale, the University of Virginia, Amherst College, Brown, the University of Colorado, and Haverford College. His publications include several volumes in the USIP series on religion, nationalism, and intolerance, as well as Religion and Nationalism in Iraq: A Comparative Perspective (2007, with Donald K. Swearer), and Peacemakers in Action: Profiles of Religion in Conflict Resolution (2007). Mr. Little was also a part of the Christianity and Freedom Project headed by the Berkley Center’s Religious Freedom Project. He holds a bachelor of divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary and a bachelor of arts from the College of Wooster.

Precious Rasheeda Muhammad, MTS ’01, is an author, speaker, and educator whose work illuminates the history of Islam in America and the American Muslim experience. Her articles and essays have appeared in Taking Back Islam: American Muslims Reclaim Their Faith (Rodale Press), The African American National Biography (Oxford University Press), and The Encyclopedia of Islam in the United States (Greenwood Press), among other publications. Her work has also been used in courses at Harvard, Emory, the University of Southern California, the University of Michigan, and Spelman College. Ms. Muhammad founded and spearheaded at Harvard the first University-wide conferences on Islam in America while a student at HDS from 2000 to 2001. During that same time, she discovered, edited, and self-published The Autobiography of Nicholas Said: A Native of Bornou, Eastern Soudan, Central Africa, a narrative about the Muslim ex-slave and veteran of the American Civil War. From July to October 2005, the Smithsonian

Institution in Washington, DC, featured her work on Said as a part of the exhibit “Forgotten Roots: African American Muslims in Early America.” In 2009, she helped plan the historic Parliament of the World’s Religions—the largest interfaith gathering in the world.

In 2011, Ms. Muhammad created a timeline of Islam in America for the U.S. Department of State, for which she was publicly recognized by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. She holds a BA in religion with honors from the University of Iowa.

Robert Lawson Slater (1895–1984) served as the founding director of Harvard Divinity School’s Center for the Study of World Religions (1958–64).

His tenure saw the construction of a new building to house the CSWR, the institution of a residential component at the center, and funds for scholarships and visiting faculty.

An Anglican priest and a scholar of Theravada Buddhism, Mr. Slater taught at McGill University and was also an honorary canon of the Montreal Cathedral. He earned a doctorate in comparative religion from the joint program of Union Theological Seminary and Columbia University and served as a British army chaplain in India and Burma during the Second World War. Mr. Slater prepared for ordination at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom, where he also served as a curate in the poor neighborhoods of Newcastle. He was the author of Guns through Arcady: Burma and the Burma Road (Sydney and London: Angus and Robertson Ltd, 1941); Paradox and Nirvana: A Study of Religious Ultimates with Special Reference to Burmese Buddhism (University of Chicago Press, 1951); and World Religions and World Community (Columbia University, 1963), among other publications.

FACULTY BOOKS THE FUTURE OF HINDU-CHRISTIAN STUDIES: A THEOLOGICAL INQUIRY Francis X. Clooney, S.J., Parkman Professor of Divinity, Professor of Comparative Theology Based on the Westcott-Teape Lectures Clooney delivered in India and at the University of Cambridge, this book explores the possibilities and problems attendant upon the field of HinduChristian studies, the reasons for occasional flourishing and decline in such studies, and the fragile conditions under which the field can flourish in the twenty-first century.

The chapters examine key instances of Christian-Hindu learning, highlighting the Jesuit engagement with Hinduism, the modern Hindu reception of Western thought, and certain advances in the study of religion that enhance intellectual cooperation.

SECULARIZATION AND RELIGIOUS INNOVATION IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC WORLD David N. Hempton (co-editor with Hugh McLeod), Dean of the Faculty of Divinity, Alonzo L. McDonald Family Professor of Evangelical Theological Studies, John Lord O’Brian Professor of Divinity This book provides a systematic comparison between the religious histories of the United States and Western European countries from the eighteenth to the late twentieth century, noting parallels as well as divergences, examining their causes and especially highlighting change over time.

This is achieved by a series of themes which seem especially relevant to this agenda, and in each case the theme is considered by the two scholars.

A DOCUMENTARY HISTORY OF UNITARIAN UNIVERSALISM, VOLS. 1 & 2 Dan McKanan, Ralph Waldo Emerson Unitarian Universalist Association Senior Lecturer in Divinity A panel of top scholars presents the first comprehensive collection of primary sources from Unitarian Universalist history. The first volume covers the early histories of Unitarianism and Universalism, from the third century up to 1899.

This volume contains more than a hundred distinct documents, with scholarly introductions by leading experts in Unitarian Universalist history. The selections include sermons, theologies, denominational statements, hymns, autobiographies, and manifestos, with special attention to class, cultural, gender, and sexual diversity. The second volume covers the history of Unitarianism, Universalism, and Unitarian Universalism from 1900 to the present, including a wealth of sources from the first 55 years of the Unitarian Universalist Association. IFÁ DIVINATION, KNOWLEDGE, POWER, AND PERFORMANCE (AFRICAN EXPRESSIVE CULTURES) Jacob K. Olupona, Professor of African Religious Traditions, with a joint appointment as Professor of African and African American Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences This landmark volume compiled by Jacob K. Olupona and Rowland O. Abiodun brings readers into the diverse world of Ifá—its discourse, ways of thinking, and artistic expression as manifested throughout the Afro-Atlantic. Firmly rooting Ifá within African religious traditions, the essays consider Ifá and Ifá divination from the perspectives of philosophy, performance studies, and cultural studies. They also examine the sacred context, verbal art, and interpretation of Ifá texts and philosophy. With essays from the most respected scholars in the field, the book makes a substantial contribution toward understanding Ifá and its role in contemporary Yoruba and diaspora cultures.

CONGRESS OF WO/MEN: RELIGION, GENDER, AND KYRIARCHAL POWER Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza, Krister Stendahl Professor of Divinity Leading feminist scholar Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza challenges the tendency in feminist theory to leave behind religion—a space of struggle, resistance, and social transformation— as a place for feminist politics. She also confronts the tendency of religious feminists to view women as if they are all the same, or to limit them to complementary roles with men. Presenting an alternative vision for global justice within the landscape of neoliberal kyriarchy, Schüssler Fiorenza calls upon religious and nonreligious feminists to engage in transformation through struggle, friendship, and community.

THE MARKET AS GOD Harvey Cox, Hollis Research Professor of Divinity Drawing on biblical sources, economists and financial experts, prehistoric religions, Greek mythology, historical patterns, and the work of natural and social scientists, Cox points to many parallels between the development of Christianity and the market economy. At various times in history, both have garnered enormous wealth and displayed pompous behavior. Both have experienced the corruption of power. However, what the religious have learned over the millennia, sometimes at great cost, still eludes “The Market” faithful: humility.

We believe that the most direct and effective way to encourage interfaith understanding and cooperation—and to counter extremism—is to produce a new generation of leaders not only educated but also formed together with their counterparts in Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, and Judaism, and with humanists as well.

The world has never needed these scholars and leaders more than it does today, when the twenty-first century’s unprecedented amalgamation of difference lies side by side with new opportunities for—and challenges to—human flourishing.

WEAVING AFRICA INTO THE TAPESTRY OF ISLAM Ousmane Kane, HDS’s Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Professor of Contemporary Islamic Religion and Society, wants to paint a much broader and more accurate picture of Islam.

A leader among a burgeoning group of scholars in the field, Kane works to bring the Muslim heritage of Africa to light. In June 2016, Kane published the breakthrough work, Beyond Timbuktu. The product of 20 years of scholarship, the book is the first true overview of intellectual history in Muslim West Africa. At a time when “the Islamic question” is central to international relations, Kane’s work corrects misconceptions about the religion and draws a more accurate picture of Muslims around the world.

TRACING THE SCARS OF COLONIALISM IN THE CARIBBEAN Professor Mayra Rivera straddles the intellectual traditions of the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Her approach to theology integrates the philosophical, the literary, and the metaphysical and considers the way that texts not only convey information, but also enable readers to have an experience that goes beyond words. In her recent book, The Poetics of the Flesh, Rivera wrestles with the legacy of colonialism on the human body. By exploring the ways that concepts like transcendence, flesh, and glory shape our perceptions, Rivera moves beyond technocratic debates about social structures, laws, and economics to the very real impact that history and policy have on the bodies and souls of human beings.

LATIN AMERICA

SMALL SCHOOL, BIG REACH THE SPIRIT OF SOCIAL JUSTICE IN MANAGUA With a grant from HDS, student Jared Oubre, MTS ’14, put his theological education to practical use building the bodies, minds, and spirits of children who live on the streets of Managua, Nicaragua. His work in 2013 at the Los Quinchos Foundation—an orphanage that offers street kids a structured learning environment—enabled him to combine study with service.

“I drew lessons from Buddhist meditation, Catholicism, and the five pillars of Islam,” he says. “We shared prayers over meals—both for the orphans and for the parents who had verbally and physically abused them. It was an important time to gather and be quiet for a moment before the children excitedly spooned down a warm plate of food.”

Oubre came to HDS for its academic excellence and multireligious approach to education. He says that the most powerful part of his HDS experience was the way that the School took education beyond intellectual rigor and interfaith dialogue.

“I wanted to learn at a different level,” he says. “It’s not just about being at school with people, but also praying with people. HDS provided an environment where I could ask someone if they wanted to pray. Until I do that step, I don’t understand how their religion relates to me.”

BRINGING MEXICO’S RELIGIOUS HISTORY TO LIGHT The world learns from Professor Davíd Carrasco’s research on the role of religion in the rise of the first cities in the Americas and also on the cultures and religious exchanges in the Mexican-U.S. borderlands. The author and editor of over 15 books, Carrasco is also the director of Harvard’s Raphael J. and Fletcher Lee Moses Mesoamerican Archive, which has helped organize new knowledge about the religions and cultures of Mesoamerica. In 2004, Carrasco received the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle, the highest recognition Mexico gives to foreign nationals for their contributions to the understanding of Mexican culture and history.

UNDERSTANDING INDIA’S ‘SACRED GEOGRAPHY’ Hindu pilgrims flock to the Kumbh Mela on the banks of the Ganges River in India every 12 years for one of the world’s largest religious gatherings. In 2013, Professor Diana Eck led a group of HDS students, Harvard undergraduates, and doctoral candidates on a trip to the festival to get a firsthand understanding of the powerful role that nature and religion play in Indian culture.

“There is no culture in the world that uses its rivers as extensively as a sort of ritual theater as India does,” said Eck, a winner of the National Humanities Medal.

“It’s not just the Ganges and the Yamuna. It’s seven sacred rivers from north to south, and beyond that many other sacred rivers that are utilized for daily religious rites in ways that one simply doesn’t find anywhere else.”

The author of India: Sacred Geography, described as “a spiritual journey through the pilgrimage places of the world’s most religiously vibrant culture,” Eck says that Indian Hindus’ relationship to their land is unique.

Nature is suffused with the presence of the gods; rivers in particular have special meaning. And yet, paradoxically, Hindus’ mass devotions can overwhelm the fragile ecosystem of a river such as the Ganges, putting it in danger. It’s a problem that calls for the kind of “One Harvard” approach championed by President Drew Faust—and by HDS faculty like Eck. “There are these dilemmas: Do we use the river water to generate hydroelectric energy? Do we use the flowing rivers to create canals and irrigation systems?”

Eck said. “How does all of that relate to the sacredness of the waters, of the rivers, and the ways in which they are used by millions upon millions of people?

Those are important issues, and they’re not simply issues of people who are in religious studies. They’re environmental issues, they’re scientific issues, and they’re inherently interdisciplinary.”

SERVING IN SINGAPORE’S DIPLOMATIC CORPS In her seven years at Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Clara Koh, MTS ’07, worked on bilateral relations with several Southeast Asian countries and the United States, coordinating issues across multiple government agencies. She also served as first secretary at the Singapore Embassy in Washington, DC, where she provided analysis on U.S. politics and foreign policy on Southeast Asia and the Middle East and coordinated the embassy’s engagements with the U.S. Congress.

TRACKING THE RETURN OF RELIGION IN CHINA While at HDS, 2016–17 Berggruen Fellow Anna Sun shed light on the “resurfacing” of religion in contemporary Chinese society—and its consequences. While survey data reports that only about 20 percent of Chinese are formally affiliated with an organized religion, Sun’s ethnographic research demonstrates that there is in fact a rich prayer life in temples, at shrines and gravesides, in private homes, and in churches and mosques.

In an anxious time of rapid economic growth and political uncertainty, Sun’s work shows how shared ritual life is bringing families and communities closer, sustaining social bonds, and maintaining values and virtues.

A DREAM OF PEACE FOR WAR-TORN SYRIA MDiv student Tony Alkhoury was a clinical pharmacist when he attended a conference in 2005 for men and women of faith interested in Christian ministry in his native Syria. As violence consumed his country—particularly Homs, the city where Alkhoury was born and where his parents still live—his commitment to Christianity and his desire to make a difference both grew until he was inspired to enroll at HDS. “In Syria, we have a huge need for those with a good mindset to understand the world and to see where God is in all this,” he says. “People are asking all the time, ‘Is this God or is this evil?’

It’s a terrible time in our nation, and I believe that churches and other leaders have a huge responsibility to respond.”

Alkhoury worked with leaders of his Syrian church to launch a new program, “3L” which he describes as “the three dimensions of the greatest commitment of Jesus: love God, love yourself, and love others.” His plan is to build partnerships with churches in the U.S. to expand this program. He is currently working to find an American Christian organization to sponsor his green card after he graduates so that he can work for peace and build relationships between American and Middle Eastern churches.

Her research challenges western notions about the “Muslim world” and the status of women in Islam.

Her book, A Quiet Revolution: The Veil’s Resurgence, from the Middle East to America, earned her the Grawemeyer Award for “highly significant contributions to religious and spiritual understanding.”

MIDDLE EAST CONFRONTING THE NEW FACE OF TERROR As the staffer in charge of North Africa and the Middle East for the National Security Council during the Obama Administration, Steven Simon, MTS ’77, dealt with transnational terrorist threats, as well as the revolutions of the Arab Spring, military intervention in Syria, the U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq, and crises between Turkey and Israel. His work puts him at the vanguard of a new group of diplomats looking to integrate an understanding of religion into U.S. foreign policy.

FROM SLAVERY TO SISTERHOOD IN THE SUDAN As part of a delegation of several other African American ministers, Rev. Gloria White-Hammond, MDiv ’97, and Rev. Liz Walker, MDiv ’05, in 2001 participated in the liberation of over 6,700 enslaved women and children in southern Sudan. The following year they were joined by alumnae Cynthia Bell, MDiv ’10, and Melinda Weekes, MDiv ’05, in founding My Sister’s Keeper (MSK), a nonprofit organization that has helped hundreds of former Sudanese slave women and girls reintegrate back into their communities.

“We initially wanted to make a distinction between our anti-trafficking and community development work,” White-Hammond says, “but the community made it very clear to us that we’re all one. So we built a school in South Sudan with 600 students, including some children of former slaves and a teacher who is also a former slave.”

The group helped purchase mills to ease the backbreaking labor that occupies much of the day for women and girls who pound sorghum into edible powder. This left many with time for education. There, too, MSK helped, not only building the girls’ school, but also launching an adult literacy program that teaches hundreds of adult women to read, enabling them to better support the education of their daughters.

BRINGING ‘ADVANCED STUDIES’ TO NIGERIA Jacob K. Olupona is a noted scholar of indigenous African religions whose research focuses on the religious practices of the estimated one million Africans who have emigrated to the United States over the last 40 years. In June 2017, Olupona launched the Institute of Advanced Studies in Nigeria, which will train its fellows to become “excellent university teachers, researchers, scholars, and public policy analysts who will effectively engage discussions on the challenges confronting our contemporary society in a globalized world.” Conceived by Olupona, who in 2007 received the Nigerian National Order of Merit, the institute is the first of its kind in Africa’s most populous country.

MAKING IT HAPPEN IN TANZANIA For nearly a generation, Rakesh Rajani, MTS ’91, at left, has dedicated himself to advocating for the rights of children and citizens in East Africa. In 2001, Rajani started HakiElimu, a nonprofit that played a key role in promoting citizen engagement in education reform and government accountability in his native Tanzania. In 2009, he launched Twaweza (“we can make it happen”) “to promote basic learning, advance access to information, and enhance government responsiveness across East Africa.” Now, as the recently named director of the Ford Foundation’s Democratic Participation and Governance program, Rajani oversees global grant-making initiatives that increase civic and political participation; promote electoral reform; and encourage effective and accountable government.

BRINGING THE STUDY OF RELIGION TO THE WORLD World Religions through Their Scriptures “World Religions through Their Scriptures,” the massive open online course created by HDS senior lecturer Diane Moore, brought together Harvard’s leading scholars of Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam.

A social and cultural anthropologist whose research is based on many years of multisite field work, Aisha BelisoDe Jesús writes at the intersections of anthropology of religion; African Diasporic studies; feminist, queer, and race theories; and the study of new media and transnationalism. Her first book, Electric Santeria: Racial and Sexual Assemblages of Transnational Religion (Columbia University Press, 2015), shows how the circulation of people on religious pilgrimage and the circulation of video have transformed the practices and conceptions of reality in Santería. The book was the winner of the 2016 Albert J. Raboteau Prize for Best Book in Africana Religions by the American Academy of Religion. Beliso-De Jesús is currently working on a set of projects regarding policing and conceptions of religion in the United States.

Matthew Potts’s first book, Cormac McCarthy and the Signs of Sacrament: Literature, Theology, and the Moral of Stories (Bloomsbury Academic, 2015), endeavors to read theological and critical theoretical traditions in parallel with McCarthy’s published works with the goal of disentangling and articulating McCarthy’s own theological vision. This first book-length theological treatment of McCarthy’s corpus places Potts in the vanguard of the “new direction” of the study of literature and religion—one that uses the critical tools of both areas of scholarship in mutually illuminating ways.

His work has already made a significant impact on the fields of religion and literature and will undoubtedly be influential in these disciplines for many years to come.

Ahmed Ragab studies the history of science and medicine, science and religion, and the development of cultures of science and cultures of religion in the Middle East and the Islamic world. He also studies various questions related to science and religion in the U.S. with a focus on U.S. Muslim communities. Ragab’s research on the history of science, medicine, and culture in the Islamic world includes his history of medieval Islamic hospitals and his research on the epistemic authority of medieval Muslim women, with a focus on women-reporters of prophetic traditions. He has also worked on sex and gender differentiation in medical thought in the region, and on the development of anatomy and dissection and their relation to religious practices in the Ottoman context. He investigates medical thinking and physician-patient encounters in the medieval and early modern context.

Cornel West teaches jointly at Harvard Divinity School and in the Department of African and African American Studies of Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He brings with him formidable expertise in continental philosophy, American pragmatism, the arts and humanities, and the religious dimensions of life. West is also a renowned teacher and mentor of students and young scholars. As a prolific author and deeply engaged public intellectual, he augments the HDS curriculum in significant ways and also models modes of engagement with the crucial religious and social issues of our time.

In Memoriam Harry Lyn Huff Harry Huff, HDS music director for many years, died on November 3, 2016, after suffering a brain aneurysm. He was 64.

In addition to his work as music director and lecturer on ministry at HDS, Huff was chapter organist in Harvard’s Memorial Church, an associate in the Music Department, and an affiliate of Lowell House. Huff also served as minister of music and organist at Old South Church in Boston’s Copley Square, a position he had held since 2007.

From 1984 until 2004, Huff was director of music for Calvary Episcopal Church, and from 1986 until 2004, he was organist and artist-in-residence at Union Theological Seminary, both in New York City. His other positions included adjunct organist in St. Paul’s Chapel, Columbia University; organist of Temple Shaaray Tefila; director of choral activities at the Aaron Copland School of Music, Queens College, CUNY; and artistic director for the St. George’s Choral Society.

Huff served the HDS community with great zest, creativity, and generosity of spirit. He was at the center of all the School’s liturgical and musical events, encouraging participation and drawing out the gifts and talents of the campus community. HDS grieves the loss and celebrates the memory of this very special colleague.

In Memoriam Richard Reinhold Niebuhr

Longtime HDS professor Richard Reinhold Niebuhr, Hollis Professor of Divinity Emeritus, passed away on Sunday, February 26, at the age of 90.

Niebuhr was a renowned theologian, researcher, and scholar and was an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ.

Born in Chicago in 1926, Niebuhr enlisted in the Navy when he was 18 years old. He graduated from Harvard College in 1947 and received a BD from Union Theological Seminary before completing his PhD in theology from Yale University. He began teaching at HDS in 1956. During the 1980s, he was instrumental in the creation and oversight of the area of the HDS curriculum devoted to Christianity and culture.

As HDS mourns Richard Niebuhr’s passing, it also celebrates his legacy and outstanding teaching career at Harvard and the qualities that earned him the affection of his former students, colleagues, and friends.

I gasped a little when I heard Walter Smelt III, MTS ’17, offer this line from the poet Rumi as advice to Harvard University’s graduating students during his Graduate English Address at Commencement last May. They were, after all, the future “masters of the universe”: brilliant leaders with a passion for knowledge and for solving problems.

Then I smiled.

Walter gave us all a taste of what goes on every day at Harvard Divinity School, where students lean into problems that have no easy solutions and grapple with questions that have no correct answer. “No new technology, no printing press or app, is going to settle the problem of greed, or death, or hate,” Walter said. “At the Divinity School, we think about these problems, and about how people have dealt with them through the ages, and how to do what right we can in the face of all that’s wrong.”

Walter’s words capture what I love about HDS. The School’s approach to education inspires a deep appreciation of what it means to be human; a lifelong search for wisdom, not just knowledge; and both the commitment and the inner resources to “take on this messy, tragic, lovely world and confront its problems in good faith.” The results, as you’ve seen in the preceding pages, include the scholarship, teaching, and public dialogue of Cornel West and Charles Stang; the revolutionary listening of Rev. Stephanie Spellers; David Hysong’s drive to cure rare cancers; and remarkable students devoted to truth-seeking and service.

The Campaign for HDS not only preserves this type of learning experience in a world where it is increasingly rare, but also extends it into the future. Your gifts have breathed new life into Christian studies, pioneered the field of Buddhist ministry, raised critical funds for student financial aid, and enabled bold new investments in religion and peacebuilding and in opportunities for international study.

KINDFULNESS Buddhist Ministry Initiative graduates bring compassion and mindfulness to those who need it most

T

here’s a story attributed to the anthropologist Loren Eiseley that Duncan Gardner, MDiv ’14, tells the inmates in the Tennessee prison where he works to illustrate the notion of compassion. An old man’s walking down a beach strewn with starfish from a recent storm. He comes upon a young woman picking up the creatures one by one and throwing them back into the ocean.

“Hey, what are you doing?” the old man asks.

“I don’t want the starfish to die in the sun, so I’m throwing them back in,” the young woman says.

“This beach is filled with starfish!” the old man exclaims.

“You’re never going to save them all.”

The young woman tosses in another starfish and says, “Yeah, but it makes a difference to that one.”

“The story makes guys tear up,” says Gardner, chaplain at the Lois M. DeBerry Special Needs Facility, a medical and mental health center operated by the Tennessee State Department of Corrections. “Negativity in a prison is rampant, so we talk about what we can do to make our pod a better place, make our lives a better place, even in the midst of it. The good actions we do are like throwing a starfish into the ocean— small, but they make a difference.”

Gardner is one of the growing number of alumni of the HDS Buddhist Ministry Initiative (BMI), the first program of its kind at a divinity school associated with a major research university. Established in 2011 with a generous gift from the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation, the BMI coordinates a range of courses on the history, thought, and practice of Buddhism, on Buddhist languages and culture, and on Buddhist arts of ministry. The initiative also supports the field education of Buddhist ministry students in hospitals and other sites of pastoral care, and offers the insights of Buddhist textual traditions and practices to students from all religious traditions who study ministry at HDS. “I can think of no place where the Buddhist Ministry Initiative would have broader and deeper impact—and in more creative ways—than at Harvard Divinity School,” says

Hershey Professor of Buddhist Studies Janet Gyatso says that HDS’s progressive ministry education program was an excellent foundation for the BMI. “Although the theology and cosmology are different, there are ways in which Buddhists work that are similar to the ways that Christian clergy do,” she says. “They need similar skills, particularly in the U.S., which is increasingly a multireligious

Although the BMI has only been around for six years, it’s become a major draw for students. In fact, within only two years of the initiative’s launch, more HDS students identified as Buddhists than did those of any other single denomination except Roman Catholics. According to Stephanie Paulsell, Susan Shallcross Swartz Professor of the Practice of Christian Studies, the BMI has had a profound influence on the way that students from all traditions study ministry.

“The study of pastoral care and counseling and preparation for chaplaincy at HDS now is deeply inflected by Buddhism, and I think that may be a permanent development,” she says. “Students preparing for ministry at HDS, no matter their religious tradition, will have their approach to pastoral care and counseling shaped by Buddhist wisdom about mindfulness and compassion. That, to me, is very exciting.”

Laura Hopps, MDiv ’12, brings that wisdom to the sick and dying at Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston, Texas. As chaplain for supportive medicine, Hopps partners with doctors, nurses, social workers, and others to provide palliative care to terminally ill patients and their families.

“I work in traumatic situations every day,” she says. “Patients dealing with a terminal diagnosis. Families wondering whether or not to remove their loved one from a ventilator.

It has so much to do with the Buddhist practice of showing up to listen and be fully present.”

Hopps credits the BMI with enabling her to develop the spiritual resources necessary to work in a field that has a high rate of burnout. She says that Gyatso—along with HDS professors Charles Hallisey and Cheryl Giles— combine rigorous scholarship with a deep understanding of Buddhist practice in a way that makes classroom knowledge immediately relevant. As a result, Hopps can be a resource not only for her patients, but also for her colleagues.

“My team sees Buddhist practice as a breath of fresh air in the midst of huge amounts of suffering,” she says. “On my interdisciplinary team, there are people who identify as Christian, atheist, Muslim, and Catholic/Buddhist. I share with them some techniques from Buddhist practice— mindfulness, loving kindness meditation—and they just want more. One doctor says that she only wants to utilize self-care practices that are backed by research. For her, that is ‘medication and meditation.’”

Gyatso says that one of the most valuable aspects of the BMI—and of ministry education at HDS—is that it prepares students like Gardner and Hopps to serve in a variety of different settings, from temples to prisons to hospitals and many others in between.

outcomes, and that’s really part of the Buddhist tradition.

What is the cause of suffering? What is the antidote?”

“Ministry can be anything from leading a religious community anywhere in the world, to social work, health care, journalism, the arts, and many other fields,” she says. “That’s one of the interesting things about HDS; people come and get an MDiv or an MTS and then go on into some very disparate fields, but they’re using what they learned here to inform what they’re doing. That works the same for Buddhism as it does for other religions.”

“People often believe that the head of state is all-powerful, that the military is monolithic, and that they are powerless against these forces,” she explains. “A lot of the practice of strategic nonviolent action is taking apart your concepts and seeing society as pluralistic. Military forces are not a monolith. They have multiple loyalties, multiple values, and they’re constantly changing. Defections from the military are often a decisive aspect of ending an authoritarian regime.”

As a student, Alia Braley, MDiv ’15, integrated study in the BMI with her passion for activism and human rights. Through HDS’s field education program, Braley spent a summer in Serbia at the Center for Nonviolent Action and Strategies (CANVAS), which “advocates for the use of nonviolent resistance to promote human rights and democracy” in more than 50 countries. Her work there led to a year-long field placement with the Albert Einstein Institution (AEI), which advances “the study and strategic use of nonviolent action in conflicts throughout the world.” When Braley graduated from HDS, AEI hired her as its director of programs, a position that involved interacting with activists throughout the world, as well as in-depth research and writing on the rapidly growing use of nonviolence to effect change in both democratic and authoritarian regimes. She says that the study and practice of Buddhism has had a big impact on her work.

BMI Coordinator Julie Gillette says that Braley’s experience is consistent with that of other BMI participants. Students increasingly choose projects that are outside a traditional ministry or chaplaincy setting—and outside the United States.

“I would say there is something about Buddhism that is very practical, and I think that is what drives me to the practical side of nonviolent action,” she says. “I’m very interested in

Braley says that the study of Buddhism also encouraged her to “disassemble” her ideas about reality, which, she says, is crucial in confronting power in an authoritarian state.

“One student studied the influence of Buddhism on politics in Japan,” she says. “Another looked at the effect of the travel industry in Bhutan on traditional pilgrimage. Recently, we funded a student over January term to go to Thailand and connect with the International Women’s Partnership for Peace and Justice. The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation’s gift gives students the flexibility to go where their passion for knowledge and service takes them.”

The BMI also extends its impact far beyond the HDS campus through a triennial international conference. Gillette says that the first conference, 2015’s “Education and Buddhist Ministry: Whither—and Why?” brought together around 150 scholars, students, and educators to discuss Buddhist ministry and to foster collaboration among institutions and individuals.

“Ministry can be anything from leading a religious community anywhere in the world, to social work, healthcare, journalism, the arts, and many other fields. That’s one of the interesting things about HDS; people come and get an MDiv or an MTS and then go on into some very disparate fields, but they’re using what they learned here to inform what they’re doing.” Janet Gyatso, Hershey Professor of Buddhist Studies “The conference helped people make connections that are especially important in this time and place, when there’s still the development of American Buddhism,” she says. “Millions of people in Asia have been practicing for a long time, and it’s important for our students to have that connection to the larger tradition, as well as a sense of the complexity of the tradition and all that goes with it.”

Another aspect of the BMI, the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Scholars program, brings Asian Buddhist traditions to campus every year in the form of students from countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Nepal, Taiwan, and elsewhere. Often monastics, they come to HDS for coursework and field education focused on Buddhist ministry.

The one-year scholarships, which cover all tuition and living expenses, made it possible for Ven. Tajay Bongsa, MTS ’16, to come from Bangladesh to Harvard and study religion and politics in order to aid in his people’s struggle for land rights.

“I come from a poor family,” Bongsa explained for a 2015 Harvard Gazette article. “So to have this opportunity to come to Harvard through the visiting scholars program and learn something that might better help the lives of my people is both gratifying and humbling.”

Gillette says that even though the BMI is still more or less in its infancy, it has a big influence on training and education across the country through the newly formed Buddhist Ministry Working Group (BMWG). Assembled after the 2015 international conference, the BMWG includes faculty and administrators from U.S. and Canadian institutions that offer Buddhist ministry programs. In addition to enabling colleagues from different parts of the country to learn from each other, Gillette says that the BMWG is on the verge of establishing recognized criteria for the certification of Buddhist chaplains.

“One of the committees that’s part of the Buddhist Ministry Working Group now is the chaplaincy training committee,” she explains. “We’re working with different institutions that accredit chaplains—especially hospital chaplains—to become board certified and to change the overall certification process so that it’s more open not only to Buddhists, but to those from other religious traditions as well. We hope to have that nailed down within the next year.”

The need for the BMI—and similar programs based on its model—will likely increase in the years ahead, according to HDS’s Dudley Rose, associate dean for ministry studies and a member of the faculty committee that manages the BMI. Rose says that, as the United States becomes more diverse, institutions like universities, hospitals, and prisons are recognizing the need to provide a wider range of spiritual care. They need professionals educated in a multireligious environment who are able to minister not only to followers of their own tradition, but also to people of other faiths.

“There’s increased demand for people who are trained in non-Christian traditions,” Rose says, “but the truth of it is that the Buddhist chaplain often ends up speaking to many non-Buddhists, just as the Jewish and Christian chaplain may. So now, in addition to the need for training in specific traditions, there’s a realization that people trained at HDS can provide a level of care across religious traditions. That’s a very important thing. No hospital’s going to have 50 or 60 chaplains on call at any given minute. Those two things really do work together.”

For Janet Gyatso, the BMI’s value to HDS and to the world rests in increased understanding not only of the differences between religious traditions, but also of their commonality.

Thanks to this pioneering program—and to the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation’s gift—students and scholars at HDS are learning to strike the balance.

“The visiting scholars from Asia and other Asian Buddhists who take part in the BMI come out of a very different cultural context,” she says. “As we get to know each other, we learn that we each have our own traditions, our own virtues, and our own etiquette. We learn how to be more respectful of one another. We find all kinds of opportunities to access a kind of common humanity or a kind of capacity to communicate with each other out of common experiences and just basic truths about life. We learn to honor our differences, but also to bridge the gap.” ­—Paul Massari

The Joy of Planned Giving Ron Alberts and Rita Schneider spent some of the best years of their married life together at HDS. Ron started his MDiv, then became a fixture in the Registrar’s Office where he helped calm the fears of many a new student. Rita was a pillar of the School’s Summer Language Program, where she taught an intensive schedule of both Spanish and French.

“We loved the School,” Schneider says.

“My students were a joy. Ron saw his work in the Registrar’s Office as a ministry.”

When the two retired some years ago, they wanted to give back to the School they loved. A planned gift enabled them to have a significant impact on HDS and its mission while providing them with an annual income for life.

“In terms of sustaining our lives, it’s beautiful,” Schneider says. “Our gifts have brought us security, but also capital that will grow and keep sustaining the Divinity School.”

Ron Alberts and Rita Schneider established a series of charitable remainder trusts.

The assets are professionally managed free of charge and generate income each quarter for as long as the donors live. They also benefit from a tax deduction and savings on gift and estate taxes.

“A charitable remainder trust is just one way that alumni and friends can have a big impact on HDS through gift planning,” says John Christel, senior associate director of University Planned Giving. “There are many different vehicles. All offer tax benefits. Many offer income for life. It’s a great deal for both the donor and Harvard.”

Ron Alberts passed away in 2010, but Rita Schneider continues to establish new trusts. She calls the act of giving back to HDS “fulfilling.”

“Money is only relevant if you use it for something that matters,” she says. “The gifts to HDS are a way to sustain messages of tolerance and peace at a time when they’re most needed. In the process, it’s sustaining me. It really gives me immense joy.”

Fundraising Results 2016–17 In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2017, HDS raised $5.4 million—an increase in 7 percent from the previous year. Gifts came from over 1,200 supporters, including many HDS alumni, other Harvard alumni, and friends of the University. Planned gifts, which include charitable trusts, annuities, bequests, and other life income gifts, remained vital to the School at over $800,000.

The HDS Fund, which helps provide stability for every area of the School and enables many new initiatives each year, raised an outstanding $714,495 in our bicentennial year. Gifts of all sizes are critical. Consider that gifts of $100 or less totaled nearly $50,000 last year, approximately the amount of two full-tuition scholarships.
