at Harvard Div DivEx is a three-day introduction to the graduate programs of one of the world’s most distinctive divinity schools, an institution offering curricula that spans religious and cultural divides to prepare ethical leaders to work in a complex world. In some ways, Harvard Divinity School is just what you might expect: a school that offers unparalleled preparation for a career in ministry. Our multireligious approach has propelled graduates into careers as lay and ordained ministers in Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, and other religious communities. Over half of our graduates, however, pursue careers other than ministry—they are leaders in public service, academia, international relations, social justice, and many other fields. HDS opens doors to a near-infinite range of possibilities. And there’s no better way to begin exploring them than by attending DivEx. Harvard Divinity School offers four degrees to match a range of career goals: • Master of Divinity (MDiv) • Master of Theological Studies (MTS) • Master of Theology (ThM) • Master of Religion and Public Life (MRPL)
Who Participates? The primary goal of DivEx is to increase participation by members of groups that have been historically underserved or marginalized in the study of religion. We strongly encourage applications from current undergraduates or recent college graduates who are students of color, first-generation students, and/or LGBTQ+ students, among other underrepresented groups.
Eligibility Please note, we can only accept applications from students who will be traveling from the contiguous United States.
What It Costs DivEx is free. We provide housing, all meals, and domestic airline, bus, or train transportation to and from Boston. Please note that any ground transportation used in your home city to get to the airport, bus, train station, or other transport terminal, and used after arriving in Boston to reach the HDS campus, is not included.

What You’ll Gain DivEx provides an opportunity for participants to evaluate how graduate studies in religion and theology might be critically aligned with career aspirations in social justice, education, lay and formal ministry, social and physical sciences, business administration, law and other career paths. Since its founding in 2007, DivEx has convened more than 500 participants from backgrounds underrepresented in the study of religion and theology at HDS. Those who went on to graduate from HDS are now part of a strong network of individuals whose contributions are part of the broadening landscape of religious and theological studies. DivEx participants who apply to HDS, if admitted, can expect to enjoy continued social and academic opportunities with their cohort. Specific program offerings, starting with fall Orientation, will feature opportunities to reconnect with one another and engage with faculty, staff and students—including DivEx alumni from former years.
