HOUSING & RESIDENTIAL

Housing and residential architecture comprises a broad range of building types — from single-family housing to multifamily developments of varying scales and complexities — each suited to equally varied demographics and economic profiles. However, no matter the specific type, a single thread weaves its way through our entire housing portfolio: we are designing a home. We help to develop an appropriate architectural expression in response to market, economic and aesthetic goals, within the context of local zoning and broader urban design principles—developing the vision into an architectural reality that is a sustainable asset for our communities and clients.

MULTI-FAMILY HOUSING

Our team designs multi-family housing developments that offer exceptional living spaces, in-demand amenities, and outdoor environments for respite and recreation. We work alongside developers, property managers and local stakeholders to create facilities that prioritize community-building, environmental stewardship, and technological integration. Working at many scales, our portfolio includes everything from additions on high-rise heritage buildings in urban settings to new developments that serve as a cornerstone of emerging communities. In every engagement, we develop design solutions that are responsive to their unique context and creatively address the needs and desires of the target market and the larger neighborhood and region.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING

Addressing affordable housing shortages across North America is essential to combatting our most pressing social equity challenges. Through community engagement and collaboration with local stakeholders, we design affordable housing solutions that include multiple services, support quality of life, and employ innovative, sustainable design strategies that connect both building and resident back to nature. Utilizing tactics such as community meetings, neighborhood canvassing, and social media engagement, we integrate public input, historical context, and community goals into every project. Our portfolio of developments demonstrates an understanding of their larger context, relating back to key community services and public goods that help create a stable home.

MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENTS

Housing is inherently linked with the broader neighborhood context. When given the opportunity, we help shape those communities by first imagining, and then crafting, social destinations that integrate the places where people live, work, and play. Our portfolio includes mixed-use environments that bring people together, integrating residential environments with a purposeful mix of art, commerce, and workspace that promotes walkability, sustainability, and healthy living. We understand how to engage stakeholders across both commercial and public-private partnerships to create unique, inviting destinations that enhance cities across the North America.

STUDENT HOUSING

With the continued in-person return to campus, many students seek to experience a full campus life. Across North America, institutions are facing unprecedented demand for student housing with long wait lists and not enough building stock to meet the current need. Students are prioritizing affordability, sustainability, and available amenities to inform their decisions about where to live on or off-campus. Beyond fitness centers, study spaces and other traditional amenities, students desire connectivity to the local community and access to transit, retail and dining. Well-designed student housing provides the opportunity to create a place of gathering that supports a comfortable, engaging and full student life experience.

GRAND BOULEVARDS

A Unique Approach to Solving the Housing Crisis

The lack of affordable and workforce housing is a national crisis for which urban sprawl is largely an unsustainable solution. The Grand Boulevards approach advocates: repairing ubiquitous but outdated strip malls; building accessible workforce housing; investing in transit; and humanizing the asphalt wastelands that divide our communities. By transforming placeless, abandoned strip

commercial lands and arterials, we can create places to live that are more affordable to the environment, to households, and to cities.

Housing is at the crux of some of our biggest social and economic challenges, but since 2008 housing in traditional subdivisions sprawling outward is too expensive for working families' pocketbooks and too damaging for the environment. Infilling, repairing, and enhancing existing communities — shifting from cars to walking, biking,

and public transit — is the most rational direction.

Grand Boulevards will create revitalized commercial corridors anchored by diverse housing options while directing the resulting increased tax base to transit, housing subsidies, open space, and social services. By leveraging Tax Increment Financing (TIF), Grand Boulevards can become ribbons of transitoriented development filled with workforce housing.

WOOD FIRST

HDR is leading the charge to develop sustainable building practices and the use of wood, and particularly large timber.

As we explore and develop new and innovative approaches, we are frequent guest speakers at various industry conferences throughout Canada, including WoodWORKS! in British Columbia, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick, on topics ranging from lessons-learned from the Living Building Challenge, to civic work in Canada.

We also provide advisory services to the Government of BC for the Wood Innovation and Design Centre, a $19,000,000 multilevel wood frame building constructed in downtown Prince George, British Columbia. The centre houses academic and research programs focused on advancing BC expertise in wood-related products, and highlights new and innovative wood building products and techniques.

Our team of architects and engineers are proud recipients of an Honourable Mention in the Office Building of the Future, a design competition by the Commercial Real Estate Development Association (NAIOP), for our bold design of a 40-story wood tower. The innovative design was also recognized internationally in the Architecture of Necessity competition, and included as part of the exhibition in Sweden. Additionally, we have recently been recognized for projects that showcase using wood products as a sustainable, flexible, and beautiful building material, including:

2018: Wood WORKS! BC, Commercial Wood Design, Penticton Lakeside Resort

2017: Community Recognition Awards, Delbrook Community Recreation Centre and West Fraser Centre

2017: Design Awards, Mulgrave Senior School and Southern Okanagan Secondary School
