Cultural & Economic Impact of Community Festivals When October rolls around in the Lowcountry, it’s time for our annual fall festivals.

Events like Crescendo, Vibes & Tides, the Bluffton Arts & Seafood Festival, Italian Heritage Festival, and the Hilton Head Island Concours d’Elegance & Motoring Festival don’t just draw in visitors; they also provide a great cultural experience for residents, and great economic opportunities for our region.

October is just the start. February will bring us the Hilton Head Island Seafood Festival, and we welcome the Hilton Head Island Wine & Food Festival in March. April brings our unofficial start to the busy season with the RBC Heritage presented by Boeing.

These festivals have grown from grassroots to grand, as our community has grown alongside it. Take Concours d’Elegance for example. This event grew from a small gathering of car enthusiasts to a world-class gathering of thousands of people. It draws in automobile enthusiasts and those who don’t know the difference between a Tesla and a Toyota, and everyone in between. It’s a true embodiment of the phrase: “If you build it, they will come.”

As for economic impact, the 2019 RBC Heritage presented by Boeing alone saw a $102 million spend in 2019. That impact is felt not only in the hotels and restaurants; most other industries feel that benefit as well.

Questions with Carolyn Vanagel

After 15 years behind the wheel of the Hilton Head Island Concours d’Elegance and Motoring Festival, she answered 5 questions with Chamber Business Monthly. CEO Carolyn Vanagal is cruising to retirement after this year’s event.

You have said that you weren’t a “car person” when you took the leadership role on the job with the Concours d’Elegance. How did you create an event that you don’t have to be a “car person” to enjoy?

For me, it was creating an event that touched people at a more visceral level.

I wanted people to walk away having been moved by the beauty of what they experienced. It was about showcasing the automobile as a piece of art that transformed people’s lives. I think we have accomplished that and the greatest comment I hear from people that go for the first time is: “I had no idea what an amazing event the Concours is.” That is why so many people come back year after year.

How did you build the event from a small gathering of car enthusiasts into an event that draws people from around the world?

I have to give full credit to the folks that began the Concours. They started with great cars and world class judges so from the beginning it was a quality event.

From there, we started to create exhibits and experiences unique to Hilton Head and attractive to the lifestyle audience.

Of course, we market the chance to visit the destination. Many of the folks coming here are first time visitors to Hilton Head Island, and I guarantee the island is one of our greatest assets.

FEATURED What would you say is your biggest accomplishment during your tenure?

I am proud of the partnerships we have built with our sponsors and leaders in the car industry. We are drawing national luminaries who have become our friends such as Jay Ward from Pixar, who is the man behind the “Cars” movie franchises, and Ralph Gilles, the head of design from Fiat Chrysler. We have become known as the “Designers” Concours as the designers from the major car manufacturers come here to share their love of design and show how the aesthetics of the car are so important to the consumer.

This year, I am especially proud of a new initiative honoring women leaders in the industry called “Women Driving America.” It is my hope that they will inspire young women to consider a career in the automotive industry and also help raise funds for our scholarships.

We have over 40 women who own these collector cars coming to exhibit with us this year. Very cool!

In 10 words or less, how would you define leadership?

Recognize what you don’t know, focus on what you do, and surround yourself with a team that knows the rest.

What is one piece of advice you’d give to someone just starting his or her career?

Find the company you want to work for, take the entry level position that may not be all glamour and go the extra mile.

Always be on time and do what you say you are going to do. If you say you are going to get back to someone the next day, do it. Be willing to chip in even when it is “not your job.” You would be amazed at how hard it is to find reliable talent that is willing to work hard. I am happy to say that about all the members of my team – it is a fantastic group! I am indeed, blessed.

IMPROVEMENTS UNVEILED Last month, the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), unveiled the six options they are evaluating for the 278 Corridor Improvement Project, which will widen the road from Moss Creek Drive and Spanish Wells Road.

All six alternatives assume that the Jenkins Island Road project will be completed, and will widen the corridor from four lanes to six.

Alternative 1 • Build new eastbound Mackay Creek bridge south of the existing bridge • Recondition and widen existing westbound Mackay Creek bridge • Recondition and possibly widen Skull Creek bridges • Use existing alignment as much as possible Alternative 2 • Build a new bridge to the north of existing westbound Mackay Creek bridge • Recondition existing westbound Mackay Creek bridge and convert to eastbound traffic • Use newly constructed bridge for westbound traffic over Mackay Creek • Recondition and possibly widen Skull Creek bridges

SCDOT will continue its environmental assessments, meet with businesses and communities, and develop its preferred alternative before presenting that to the public in the fall of 2020.

VOTE YES FOR OUR CHILDREN Vote YES for the Beaufort County School Referendum Your chamber’s Board of Directors is supporting the 2019 School Board Referendum, which will ask the county to approve $344 million in projects focused on improving school safety, renovating inadequate facilities and adding classroom space to accommodate growth.

The Nov. 5 referendum will seek voter approval on two separate questions: Question 1 – $290 million in safety and security upgrades at all district schools; technology infrastructure upgrades at schools district-wide; classroom additions at River Ridge Academy and May River High; a replacement building for Robert Smalls International Academy; and renovations at three schools (Beaufort Elementary, Hilton Head Island Middle and Battery Creek High).

Question 2 – An additional $54 million in Career and Technology Education expansions at Battery Creek and May River High Schools; design work for renovations at Hilton Head Island High; improvements to athletic facilities at district middle and high schools; and playground improvements at early childhood centers, elementary and PreK-8 schools.

The second question will go into effect only if the first question is approved.
