A Space for

Innovation Entrepreneurship

The Don Ryan Center for Innovation’s HUB As Buckwalter Place continues its transformation, the hub of innovation and entrepreneurship will soon have its own space to help the town continue to thrive.

The Don Ryan Center for Innovation, (DRCI) plans to move into the HUB, its brand-new space, by the end of the year.

“It’s a game-changer,” said Trent Williamson, CEO of the DRCI. “Bluffton has prided itself in its quality of life and economic vitality through comprehensive and long-range planning. The HUB is going to be a huge component to lead diverse, high quality and sustainable development though strategic pursuit of businesses within knowledgebased job sectors.”

The DRCI’s goal is to create a vibrant business climate within the Bluffton area through economic development, emphasizing entrepreneurism and sustainable growth. It does so by offering business incubation, coworking space, education and outreach, business attraction and retention, workforce development, and business concierge services.

The HUB will not only support DRCI’s mission but will also be the “physical home for our innovator’s businesses,” Williamson said.

The HUB will be a 3,000 square-foot facility that will provide space for innovators in their incubation program, SCORE and DRCI mentors, and high-tech

co-working for businesses. Innovators will have access to shared software such as SOLIDWORKS, AutoCAD, Adobe Suite, and workshops to teach entrepreneurs those skills. Additionally, The HUB will be an ideal place for businesses in the Bluffton region to have meetings in a central location.

“People want a place to be able to grow their business. We’ve heard our entrepreneurs say that they’d like a very high-tech and modern place with shared software. Entrepreneurs who are starting out may be bootstrapping their business. It’s difficult to acquire all the proper tools right out of the gate,” Williamson said.

“The modern entrepreneur must be jack of all trades to some degree. We want to make sure that we are training and equipping our innovators with the tools they need to be successful.”

The HUB will also allow DRCI to continue its mission of nurturing businesses through its incubator program and serving as the economic development arm of the Town of Bluffton.

Williamson said the town is ideal for IT, Aerospace, Healthcare, Communication, Marketing, Design and Publishing companies as well as back office support companies and light manufacturing.

“The modern entrepreneur must be jack of all trades to some degree. We want to make sure that we are training and equipping our innovators with the tools they need to be successful.”

The HUB’s location will be connected to the Technical College of the Lowcountry’s (TCL) Culinary Institute of the South, and the area will share a courtyard attached to that campus as well as the Bluffton Memorial Park across the street.

“It’ll be a vibrant space full of energy from students and business activity,” Williamson said. “We are working hard to build a great place to build and grow a business.”

The Capital Improvement Projects map allows a status update to the projects that are designed to improve or maintain parts of the town. The projects are tagged on a map and color-coded by status, (planned, underway or completed). Users can click on the tag to get details about any one of the projects. Questions with Entrepreneur Billy Watterson stopped at a traffic light and looked up and read the words “Burnt Church Road.”

My first thought was, “Who would name a road Burnt Church?” My second thought was, “I can’t wait to get home to ask Google how the road got its name.”

Unfortunately, Google didn’t have the answer. The best I could find was old folklore, half stories and cloudy recollections. For some reason, I couldn’t get the road out of my head and needed to know more. It was then that I realized this road would be the inspiration for the naming of the distillery. I was hooked and so the quest began.

In May, the Burnt Church Distillery broke ground on Bluffton Road, marking the beginning of a $10.3 million investment that will create 27 new jobs.

Brothers Billy and Sean Watterson are the founders of the distillery, and Billy answered five questions.

Why Bluffton for the Burnt Church Distillery?

Mayor Lisa Sulka always says, “Why not Bluffton?’ and she’s dead on. With the research we did, Bluffton was the spot for us. It is geographically perfect, nestled between Savannah, Hilton Head Island and Charleston. Beyond that, the rich history we had to build on is unbelievable.

The vibe of Bluffton is contagious. We plan to capture this “state of mind” through our architectural interpretation, displays of historical research and colorful stories associated with our brands of whiskey, vodka, gin and moonshine.

Our mission is to be the spirit of the Lowcountry.

We want to convey that to everyone who finds themselves eager to learn and eager to taste. We hope to be entertaining you with legends of folklore, ancient anecdotes, and one-of-a-kind spirits.

What was the inspiration behind the name?

Our distillery was inspired by the mystery of Burnt Church Road. While driving through town one day, I

It wasn’t long after that I realized I had neither the time nor the skill to uncover this mystery. We soon hired a historian so we could learn the true story behind Burnt Church Road and share it with our patrons. Our search for the truth has inspired our architecture, interiors, recipes and brands.

It’s almost like the road found us.

You’ve been called a “serial entrepreneur” with 20 ventures launched in the last 18 years. What’s the best business advice you’ve ever received or what advice would you give to someone who wants to launch their own business?

I really should have paid more attention to business advice that I received in the early years.

It would have saved me lots of heartaches. I seem to be one of those guys that needs to make his own mistakes in order to gain any wisdom. In terms of advice, I would offer to my fellow budding entrepreneurs to surround yourself with a diverse group of smart folks with differences of opinion— especially from yours. And, when you know “it’s” right, don’t hesitate. Move forward quickly and don’t look back.

How did you become interested in launching a distillery?

The idea of making whiskey first came up on an RV trip to South Dakota with my brother, Sean. One day after a long hike we started a fire, grabbed a nice cold whiskey and settled into a couple of lawn chairs.

I asked Sean what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. Making whiskey happened to be one of the ideas I threw out. The thought of it was exciting but after coming home and researching the process, we both realized it wasn’t a part-time gig. We left

the idea alone for about a year. During that time, I had moved to Hilton Head Island full time and was semi-retired when the idea consumed me, yet again.

I called my brother and asked, “Do you want to move to South Carolina and make whiskey?” The rest, as they say, is history.

Besides liquors and tastings, what else will the Burnt Church Distillery have?

We want the distillery to be more than just a place to taste some exceptional spirits. Considering the rich history of the Lowcountry, we plan for the distillery to be both a historical and educational communal destination for locals and tourists alike to learn about distilling and the history of our surroundings. There will also be an adjacent building on the premises serving family-friendly fare as well as open space to host live music and community events. Being a part of this community is essential and very important to us. We now call this area our home and we intend to

Business Growth in Bluffton The growth in Bluffton is easy to see. From 2009 to 2018, business licenses issued increased by 50 percent. Between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018, the town issued 828 new single-family housing permits. The town’s population also grew by 63 percent while school enrollment nearly doubled.

Chamber Named DMO for Bluffton Town The Hilton Head IslandBluffton Chamber of Commerce was awarded the three-year contract to continue as the Town of Bluffton’s destination marketing organization, (DMO). Bluffton’s Town Council unanimously voted to award the contract at the June 11 Town Council meeting.

As the DMO, the chamber’s Visitor and Convention Bureau division is tasked with marketing Bluffton as a destination. Visitors pay for visitor marketing; accommodation tax dollars are derived from hotel and resort stays. The 2019-2020 marketing plan calls for an increased digital presence, print ads in Southern Living as well as new social media pages for Bluffton.

Tourism and hospitality has grown as well with revenue per available room - or RevPAR - increasing by 91 percent between 2013 and 2018. In the past three years, Montage Palmetto Bluff expanded its accommodations, and the Old Town Bluffton Inn opened its doors.

Bluffton Gets Its Own Social Pages

New Fire Station Coming to Bluffton

In a nod to Bluffton’s growing tourism, the destination is getting its own social media pages!

Construction of Fire Station 38 and emergency operations center for the Bluffton Township Fire District was approved by the Beaufort County Council last month. The facility will be located on Hampton Lake Road, adjacent to River Ridge Academy, and will serve Sun City, Lawton Station, Hampton Lake, Buckwalter Place, Sandy Pointe, Shell Hall, Hampton Hall, The Farm, Pine Ridge and Pine Crest.

Destination Focus: Bluffton in the National News Bluffton Featured in Tyler Florence’s “The Extra Mile.”

While on Hilton Head Island for filming of the Great Food Truck Race, Tyler Florence and his crew went shrimping and crabbing with May River Excursions, and visited Palmetto Bluff and FARM for the onlineexclusive “The Extra Mile.”

COMMUNITY FOCUS: Hilton Head Island

Town Breaks Ground on Celebration Park

Hilton Head Island Town Council members as well as town staff, Chamber President & CEO Bill Miles and The Sandbox Executive Director Nancy Fish broke ground on the Lowcountry Celebration Park on June 11.

The long-awaited project is a major part of the Coligny Area Redevelopment Initiative. The park will feature a large lawn and stage to accommodate festivals, concerts and other gatherings, a destination playground with an iconic ship inspired by William Hilton’s “Adventure” ship that brought him to the Port Royal Sound in 1663, The Sandbox Children’s Museum, walking trails and boardwalks, exercise stations, and approximately 129 additional parking spaces. The park is scheduled to open in the summer of 2020.

Youth Awards

Hilton Head Island high and middle school students contributed more than 30,000 volunteer hours with the American Cancer Society, the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing, Special Olympics, the Coastal Discovery Museum, Deep Well and many other organizations, churches and schools. On May 20, Hilton Head Island Mayor Pro-Tem Bill Harkins recognized them for their contributions during the eighth annual Mayor’s Youth Volunteer Service Award Ceremony. He presented certificates of appreciation to 268 students for completing at least 50 hours of community service. Seventy-nine of those students contributed more than 150 hours of service to earn the Mayor’s Call to Service Award.

Hilton Head Island named among CountryLiving.com’s “23 Most Charming Beach Towns in the U.S. to Add to Your Travel Bucket List.” What they said: Not only can you get your golf or beach fix on the sandy shores of Hilton Head, but you can also soak up the island’s storied history.

GolfWeek names all three Sea Pines Resort courses, as well as the May River Golf Course and Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront Golf Course as some of the best in South Carolina. Harbour Town Golf Links was ranked #2 and Palmetto Bluff’s May River was ranked #3 in the annual list of America’s Best Courses.

The Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership program graduated 17 local business professionals during a ceremony on June 5 at the Skull Creek Dockside restaurant. This year’s class installed “Sense Bluffton,” a playground designed for children with autism or sensory impairments, in Bluffton’s Oscar Frazier Community Park.

Chamber Hosts Blood Drive The Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce and the American Red Cross held a blood drive on June 18 at the chamber’s Hilton Head Island office. The blood donated that will help replenish the local supply.

Mayor Joseph Riley Featured at State of the Region on October 1

One of America’s longest serving mayors will be the keynote speaker at the State of the Region on October 1 at the Hilton Head Marriott Resort & Spa. Joseph Riley served as the Mayor of Charleston for 40 years, from 1975 through 2016, and was at the helm of the city during its transformation into a top destination. He’s widely credited with reviving downtown Charleston.

Mayor Riley also led the city through Hurricane Hugo, and the Emanuel AME Church shooting.

Prior to being elected mayor, he served in the South Carolina General Assembly from 1969-1974, and graduated from The Citadel.

Mark your calendars to hear Mayor Riley speak about accomplishments and leadership, and what the Lowcountry can learn from Charleston’s success. The Office of Cultural Affairs for the Town of Hilton Head Island and the Boys & Girls Club of Hilton Head Island hosted members of the community to begin painting the second installation of local artist Lauren Andreu’s “For the Cause of Peace and Brotherhood” mural.

The Hilton Head Hospital Auxiliary Caring Touch Program donated $18,000 to Volunteers in Medicine Bluffton and Hilton Head for patient medication.

The funds were generated by proceeds from the gift shops at Coastal Carolina Hospital and Hilton Head Hospital, which are managed and staffed by volunteers.

Collins Group Realty is helping the Arrhythmia Alliance raise funds to replace two AEDs that were stolen in Bluffton over Memorial Day Weekend.

Haig Point has new helicopter service to Daufuskie from Hilton Head Island and Savannah/ Hilton Head International Congratulations to Edward Jones, Haig Point, Palmetto Electric, and South State Bank for being named among the “Best Places to Work in South Carolina.”

SERG is offering college tuition assistance whereby eligible employees can earn up to $1 toward their higher education for every hour worked. Last year, SERG initiated a tuition reimbursement program solely for USCB students. The company also announced a 15 percent raise for all its employees.

Hilton Head Hospital received an “A” from Leapfrog Group’s spring 2019 ratings, up from last year’s “B” rating. The hospital was graded in categories including infections, problems with surgery, practices to prevent errors, safety, and staff.

The Hilton Head Public Service District has achieved designation as a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program, which provides information and guidance to help businesses and organizations preserve and enhance wildlife habitat, and protect natural resources.

To reach certification, a property must demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in several areas.

Beaufort County School educators earned five awards from the South Carolina chapter of the National School Public Relations Association.

Hilton Head Island Elementary earned three awards, and Robert Smalls International Academy and the district’s Office of Communications each earned one.

Natalie Paszek (pictured below) was awarded Coastal Carolina Hospital’s Daisy RN Award for Extraordinary Nursing.

She began her career there in 2009, served in the U.S. Air Force, and then returned to Coastal Carolina and works in the interventional radiology department.

Frank Rodriguez will serve as the new superintendent of the Beaufort County School District. He was previously the regional superintendent in the 193,000-student School District of Palm Beach County, Fla.

Brian Ryman was named principal of River Ridge Academy.

He was previously an assistant principal at Bluffton High School.

During a joint Business Education Partnership and Public Policy Committee meeting, Herbert Berg, the interim superintendent of Beaufort County Schools, talked about the referendum he proposed to the school board, which later voted to put it on the ballot in November, and - if approved by voters - the money would go toward safety improvements and capital projects at school buildings across the county.

Scene Be Seen Welcome back, Delta! The airline celebrated the inaugural flight between Hilton Head Island Airport to Atlanta and New York’s LaGuardia airport last month.

The Chamber Young Professionals Group and Arrhythmia Alliance hosted a heart-themed happy hour at Java Burrito to help promote raising awareness of heart health, sudden cardiac arrest, knowing your pulse, CPR and the use of an AED. 22

The Burnt Church Distillery broke ground on Bluffton Road in May. The business is investing over $10 million into Bluffton and will create 27 jobs in the area.

Pulseology celebrated the opening of its wellness center with a ribbon cutting.

The Richardson Group celebrated the opening of dorm-style workforce housing in the former Carswell Insurance building on Hilton Head Island in June. All of the 32 units are fully rented.
