T

he past one and half years have been difficult for many and have had a major impact on all our lives. It is normal to experience stress and distress with life-changing events such as the pandemic. For some, there will be new or worsening symptoms of depression, anxiety and insomnia.

While most will recover over time, there will be some who will develop ongoing, chronic symptoms requiring medical attention and care. Anxiety is not a normal part of aging, and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is the most common anxiety disorder among the older adult population.

What is anxiety?

GAD is characterized by excessive and persistent worrying that is hard to control, causing distress or impairment and occurring on more days than not for at least six months. The disturbance is not caused by or related to another medical condition nor due to effects of a substance (e.g., drug abuse or medication) or mental health disorder.

Anxiety and worry are accompanied by at least three or more of the following six symptoms: restlessness (i.e., feeling on edge), fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension and sleep disturbance (e.g., difficulty falling or staying asleep or unsatisfying sleep).

What are the risk factors for developing GAD? The risk for late-onset GAD include: female sex, poverty, recent adverse life events, parental loss or separation, negative or difficult childhood events, chronic physical health illness (e.g., heart and lung disease, diabetes or cognitive disorders), chronic mental health disorders (e.g., depression, phobias or past GAD) and history of mental health problems in parents. GAD is also associated with increased rates of substance abuse and unexplained chronic pain.

Many people who have depression have other mental health disorders.

Depression and anxiety are commonly found together. It is important to recognize this connection because together the prognosis is worse.

The GAD-2 is an easy and brief screening tool for GAD. The tool asks, “Over the last two weeks, how often have you been bothered by the following problems?”

1. Feeling nervous, anxious or on edge (zero equals not at all, one equals several days, two equals more than half the days, and three equals nearly every day)

2. Not being able to stop or control worrying (zero equals not at all, one equals several days, two equals more than half the days, and three equals nearly every day) A total score of three points warrants further evaluation by a health care provider. Please talk to your health care provider as soon as possible if you have a total score of three or more points.

What treatments are available for GAD? Anxiety can affect older adults by significantly impacting quality of life. Talk to your health care provider if you have symptoms of GAD. Your health care provider will take a complete history and do a complete physical exam to make sure there is not another physical problem causing your symptoms. Blood work might be ordered. After a complete workup, if GAD is the diagnosis, your health care provider will discuss possible treatment options. There are two good treatment options: psychotherapy and medications. These are often combined to achieve the best outcome.

The type of psychotherapy used to treat GAD is called cognitive behavioral therapy, also known as CBT. CBT teaches one to think, behave and react differently when situations cause anxiety or worry.

Medications include serotonin reuptake inhibitors, serotoninnorepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, and benzodiazepines. The effect of medications is not immediate and can take up to several weeks to start working. Be sure to talk to your health care provider immediately if side effects develop. Side effects can be prevented by starting on a low dose and increasing the dose slowly over time.

What else can I do to feel better if I have GAD? Exercise and a healthy diet are paramount. It is also a good idea to cut down on caffeine intake since caffeine can make anxiety worse. Finally, stop smoking. Smoking is not a treatment for anxiety and quitting will make you feel better.

Prime Time 50+ Expo Returns October 13th

he annual Prime Time 50+ Expo is returning this fall to celebrate its 25th anniversary after a year off in 2020 due to Covid-19. The free event provides people 50 and older with comprehensive information about health and wellness topics of particular interest to older adults, and offers a healthy dose of entertainment, too.

The Expo is scheduled for 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. October 13 at the Embassy Suites, 1000 Woodward Place NE. About 700 to 800 area seniors are anticipated to attend, with more than 50 health-related vendors participating.

“After taking a year off from having the event due to Covid, we are excited to bring it back for 2021,” said Dave Rivord, publisher

of Prime Time Magazine, which is hosting the event.

The Expo will feature speaker presentations focusing on seniors’ health needs and a multitude of exhibitors offering health and wellness tips, discussing programs and services, and answering questions or concerns.

Representatives will also offer a wide range of screenings that will be available at no charge, including blood pressure testing, glucose tests, cholesterol level checks, balance screenings, and hearing tests.

“Regular preventive health screenings play a big part in senior wellness, making them aware of potential health problems,” Rivord said. “They become more educated about their health, learning the importance of prevention.”

or a variety of reasons, many older Americans won’t retire.

According to a May 29, 2019 report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 30.2% of Americans ages 65 to 74 are projected to be in the workforce in 2026. While financial necessity is one big reason many people won’t retire, others are choosing to stay employed for as long as they can. According to Maurie Backman, in “3 Reasons to Work During Retirement,” generating extra income, saving on leisure costs, and warding off depression top the reasons many seniors choose to remain in the workforce.

Still, working after retirement age doesn’t necessarily mean seniors are punching time clocks. According to data from the Kauffman 2017 National Report on Early-Stage Entrepreneurship, 26% of new entrepreneurs aged 55 to 64 years old.

So if you plan to remain in the workforce, but would like to work

for yourself, there are plenty of business opportunities that don’t cost a bundle to get started. Here are 19 companies you can start from home, most of which require minimal to no investment.

Wedding Planner. Does the idea of helping couples with one of the most important and romantic days of their lives make your heart skip a beat? Consulting. What’s your area of expertise? Whatever it is, there are likely plenty of people or businesses that could use your advice. Overhauling The Rail Yards

o matter where you live in Albuquerque, at some point you’ve probably driven down 2nd Street just south of downtown and noticed that complex of ghostly buildings looming over the rail yards. Their thousands of panes of glass and thick concrete walls are embossed with the cross-in-acircle logo of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway (AT&SF). If you’ve lived here a long time, you might remember when they hummed with activity. Maybe your father or grandfather even worked there.

These were the repair shops established in 1880, to service the steam locomotives of the AT&SF, whose tracks reached Albuquerque the same year. Their story is told in rich and fascinating detail by Richard Flint and Shirley Cushing Flint in their new book, Overhaul: A Social History of the Albuquerque Locomotive Repair Shops, published

by UNM Press. The Flints are local historians who have written and/or edited several books dealing with the 1540 Coronado expedition.

Overhaul is their first foray into more recent history.

The book is titled Overhaul because for about 75 years that’s mostly what the shops did. Steam locomotives were complex and

temperamental beasts that required a complete re-building every 18 months, on average, as well as extensive maintenance between overhauls. When maintenance was neglected, a locomotive didn’t just stop running; it failed catastrophically, sometimes in an explosion of shrapnel, twisted boiler tubing, and live steam. One of the most dramatic photos in the book shows the aftermath of such an explosion. The train’s engineer and fireman, riding in the cab of the locomotive, just behind the boiler and firebox, would be lucky to escape with their lives. Many times, they did not. So, the work of the shops was of vital importance.

The shops were crucial to the local economy as well. For decades they were the largest employer in town, with a work force of up to 1,500 people when running at full capacity, as they did during the Second World War. The AT&SF paid good wages, especially to skilled workers like journeyman machinists and boilermakers, and the work was steady. Albuquerque residents set their watches by the punctual blast of the steam whistle that marked the beginning and end of the workday. It could be heard all over town.

The original rail yard structures, built of native red sandstone, stood from 1880 to the mid-1920s. Over that period, the Santa Fe’s locomotives nearly doubled in length, from around 34 feet in 1887, to over 60 feet by 1923.

Some weighed as much as 100 tons. The old shops were now too small, so

they were replaced by state-of-theart buildings of steel and glass, more than four stories tall, inspired by the Ford Motor Co. plant in Dearborn, Mich. The bays of the two largest structures, the machine shop and the boiler shop, could accommodate up to 26 locomotives at one time.

Giant overhead cranes hoisted them off their running gear so that they could more easily be stripped down and rebuilt. Steam locomotives were not mass-produced, so off-the-

shelf replacement parts were not available. Parts had to be fabricated on-site at the yards’ blacksmith shop.

A complete overhaul took about a month.

Despite the good wages, the shops could not have been a very comfortable or safe place to work, at least by modern standards. The walls of glass bathed the interior in natural light but also made it a sweltering sauna in summer. Grease and grime were unavoidable. Metal

There were massive dust from grinding operations and layoffs at the shops. For a time, asbestos fibers from the insulating the AT&SF kept a small crew at blankets that sheathed the boilers filled the air. Annual Chile Festival Makes Harvest Season Official

he leaves are falling, the weather is cooler, the days are shorter, and the sights, sounds, and aromas of one of New Mexicans’ favorite flavors returns.

It’s green chile season, and the rich smell of roasting permeates the air.

To celebrate harvest season, which began in early July and will end with the first freeze, the small southern village of Hatch, N.M., is heating up. The Chile Capital of the World is bringing back the Hatch Chile Festival on Labor Day weekend, September 4-5, beginning at 9 a.m. each day.

The annual event has changed location this year, moving into the town of Hatch Village, partly in an effort to support local small businesses.

“The community was hurting because of last year’s coronavirus pandemic,” said Lisa Neal, president of the Hatch Valley Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the event. “All the shops, stores and restaurants will be open this year.

A parade will kick off the event at 9 a.m. Saturday. Weekend festivities include a carnival, music, a beer garden, village market, and watermelon- and chile-eating

The festival, which launched in 1971, attracts up to 30,000 people from around the world, Neal said.

She anticipates just as many visitors this year.

Festival organizers will follow State of New Mexico protocols regarding masks and other safety guidelines for COVID-19 restrictions, she said.

The Chamber of Commerce puts the event together with support from multiple sponsors, businesses and organizations from Hatch Valley.

“We had two months to put the festival together; we were scrambling. The festival is great for our community, and we have a good harvest this year,” Neal said. “This is the longest-running festival in New Mexico.”

The Village of Hatch is in northern Dona Ana County, about 40 miles northwest of Las Cruces.

Admission to the fiesta costs $10 per carload, with designated parking at the Hatch High School.

Move Over Cars, Chile Roasters Are Here

ew Mexicans and people from around the country are taking to the stands – chile stands, that is – to get their green chile roasted in parking lots and curbsides across the state.

Their daughter, Janet Arredondo, who is a co-owner of the business, said crops are plentiful this year, with an early batch in July from Hatch and another that arrived from Lemitar in August. However, local chile vendors are facing a few challenges, she said.

However, Nelson’s uses an innovative technique – a pizza oven, as opposed to a traditional metal pepper roaster or a griddle.

“We use older pizza ovens that run on a conveyer belt,” Nelson said.

The three pizza ovens operate on natural gas and will roast a 25- to 30-pound sack of chile in about seven to eight minutes, he said. While that’s pretty quick, the line to get chile roasted may not be. Nelson is asking customers to make appointments because the store is having difficulty keeping up with the demand.

“We are excited to be expanding our store next year,” Nelson said.

“We have been so busy, and we are grateful that our customers have been patient.”

“The chile fields are full with chile ready to be picked, but they don’t have the manpower to pick the chiles,” Janet said.

And then there’s the weather.

“Mother Nature plays a big part in our crops,” she said. “If it rains too much or it’s too hot, our chile is ruined and destroyed.”

Larry Nelson, co-owner of Nelson’s Meats for more than 50 years in the South Valley, also gets his store’s chile from Hatch and Lemitar. He said that between lack of harvest workers and flooding, this year’s chile crop has been “hit and miss.”

But that won’t stop the chile roasting that occurs every September and October in parking

35th Anniversary Of Joy Junction

appy 35th Anniversary to Joy Junction, New Mexico’s largest homeless shelter for families!

found himself in Santa Fe, where he wound up settling. Because he knew what it was like to be without shelter and food, he began a ministry called “His Place” in a coffeehouse and served coffee and burritos to the homeless.

In 1986, Jeremy moved to Albuquerque and set up the Joy Junction shelter on the property of an old school, where the focus was on keeping families together. From then on, Joy Junction has served homeless families, single parents with children, single women, and single men when there is space.

For those who don’t know, Joy Junction’s Founder, Dr. Jeremy Reynalds, was homeless back in the 1980s. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1978 and became a U.S. citizen.

But, soon found himself homeless.

He made his way from Florida to New Mexico, by hitchhiking. He

In the beginning, families were housed in a small building. Later, a larger structure was used and named the Multi-Purpose building. Mats took the place of beds at night, and then were cleaned and removed each morning to make room for the serving of daily meals.

After a while, an old motel was moved in to provide individual apartments for those who transitioned into employees. Over

time, the older, dilapidated buildings on the property were removed. A guard house was constructed at the entrance of the property, and a twostory housing complex was built to house families. As well, two barracks were renovated for single males and single females to be sheltered separately. Those updates allowed the Multi-Purpose building to be used as a “command post” so all the programs and activities could take place there without having to remove mats each day. A playground was also updated to allow recreation for the children.

A life recovery program was formed and offered to those who wanted help breaking free from addictions or bad behavior choices.

Many have graduated from the program and moved back into mainstream society.

During the years of directing Joy Junction, Jeremy worked hard to complete his master’s degree in communication from UNM, and a Ph. D. in intercultural education from Biola University. He has written numerous books, and published articles, on the plight of the homeless and disenfranchised.

What you might not know about your eyes

f you’re over 40 years old, you may have noticed your vision getting worse – maybe you need a light when reading or have trouble driving at night.

What is often shrugged off as another unavoidable part of aging could be a sign of something that can be quickly and safely resolved – cataracts.

According to research by the Kellogg Eye Center at the University of Michigan, most people will get cataracts at some point in their lives, yet misconceptions exist around what they are and the treatment options available.

“Many people think worsening vision is a natural sign of aging and it’s something they just have to learn to live with,” said Dr. Daniel Chang, ophthalmologist at Empire Eye and Laser Center. “I tell my patients it doesn’t have to impact your daily life, there are treatment options, and you don’t have to suffer. Cataract surgery is both safe and effective with an extremely high success rate of improving vision.”

Myth: A cataract is a rare condition where a film grows over the eye.

Fact: Cataracts are far from rare, impacting more than 90% of people by the age of 65, according to University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center. Rather than something growing over your eyes, cataracts are a clouding of the eye’s natural lens. According to Chang, a healthy lens is made of water and proteins, and is clear so light can pass through it. With age and certain conditions, these proteins start to clump together, leading to blurry or foggy vision.

Myth: Cataracts can be reversed.

Fact: Cataracts are fixed by surgically removing the clouded lens and replacing it with a permanent, artificial lens known as an intraocular lens (IOL), which can restore or even improve vision.

“Advanced IOLs can also help widen your range of vision and correct presbyopia (age-related near-vision loss) at the time of surgery,” Chang said. “For example, the TECNIS Synergy™ IOLs may even reduce the need for glasses after surgery.”

Myth: Cataract surgery is risky and results take time.

Fact: Cataract surgery is one of the most common procedures performed in the United States with a success rate of around 98%, according to the VisionAware campaign from the American Printing House for the Blind. The surgery is quick – with each eye taking approximately 15 minutes, according to Johnson & Johnson Surgical Vision.

“After the surgery, you can typically go back to your daily low-impact activities – with the exception of driving – after 24 hours,” Chang said.

our grandmother may have been correct in offering chiles to a sick family member or friend. The remedios of the past have scientific basis for their health claims.

Many medical and nutritional journals report various benefits of consuming chile, including pain relief, inhibition of some bacteria, improvements in cognitive function, red blood cell formation, reduced blood pressure and improved cardiovascular health.

Chile can clear nasal congestion, soothe intestinal complaints, boost immunity, promote weight loss and even help maintain healthy eyes.

Capsaicin, a substance found in chile, inhibits substance P, a neuropeptide that carries pain sensations to the brain. It can also reduce inflammation in joints and has been shown to be effective in shingles treatment, as well as in treatment of some neuropathies.

There may also be an adjunctive role for capsaicin in the prevention and treatment of migraines.

Chiles have large amounts of beta carotene and antioxidants that help support the immune system and may aid in fighting off colds and the flu. It has been reported that nasal sprays containing capsaicin reduce sinus congestion. Increased body temperature from the ingestion of hot peppers triggers the immune system into action in fighting the norovirus (cold) and flu viruses.

Chile has high concentrations of potassium, essential for many bodily functions. Potassium combined with folate can reduce your chances of developing heart disease. Moreover, potassium can help relax your blood vessels, which makes blood flow much easier on your body.

The B vitamins, riboflavin and niacin are also found in chile. Niacin can help regulate healthy cholesterol levels and, in turn, lower the risk for heart disease.

Let’s not forget to mention iron. Hemoglobin production is dependent upon iron as a building

block, and chile is rich in iron.

Hemoglobin carries oxygen in our blood, and adequate oxygen can promote brain health.

Some may complain that chile irritates their gastrointestinal tract. As counter-intuitive as this may seem, the capsaicin in peppers actually acts as an antiirritant and may be beneficial in ulcer disease. The anti-oxidants in chile may aid upset stomach, reduce intestinal gas, and act as a natural remedy for cramps.

Chile also increases saliva and stimulates the production of gastric secretions, thereby aiding in digestion.

Keep in mind that chile should be considered a supplemental component to any medical regimen. Ask your health care provider if it can be part of your daily diet and health plan.

In 2008, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition ran a trial with 72 individuals with cardiovascular risk factors. It determined, “The consumption of moderate amounts of berries resulted in favorable changes in platelet function, HDL cholesterol, and BP (blood pressure). The results indicate that regular consumption of berries may play a role in the prevention of cardiovascular disease.”

Acai and blueberries are high in fiber, which mediates the 15-20 grams of sugar per cup. While blueberries have zero fat, acai has about 5 grams of unsaturated fat (omega-3s, 6s, and 9s) per half cup of frozen puree. Berry fiber and acai fat makes the fruits’ combination an excellent foundation for a smoothie bowl meal replacement or after-meal dessert because they satiate adequately without causing a spike in blood sugar that leads to further cravings.

Whole food nutrition is better than processed foods, even when aiming for low-calorie options.

Processed foods contain chemical trickery, such as artificial flavors and sugars. These chemical additives do little to support the complex needs of the brain, or the cardiovascular and immune systems. Berries are an excellent choice to supply bio-available minerals and vitamins to either

protect against or recover from disease.

One popular treat is an “acai bowl.” You can find one at many smoothie bars, or you can make one yourself. To prepare one at home, look for frozen acai packets at your local grocer.

Blend frozen acai with equal parts frozen banana, then scoop them into a freezer-safe bowl and return the mix to the freezer.

While refreezing your acai/banana blend, gather your toppings.

Consider freshly sliced banana, cacao nibs, cocoa powder, glutenfree granola, wild blueberries, sliced strawberries, and almond butter. When your acai blend has become firm from the freezer, spread two heaping tablespoons of almond butter on the firm puree.

Next, top with granola, cacao nibs, fruit, and then dust it with cocoa. Prepare your recipe to your preference. You may prefer kiwi, mango, chia seeds, or even avocado in place of banana or with coconut flakes or almond slivers. You can replace acai with frozen blueberries as well. Blend similarly with equal parts banana to create a puree. Perhaps make your puree blend in freezer-safe ramekins ahead of time, ready for the children and grandchildren for after-school or for your nightly treat.
