New research: Copper stops colds if used early.

New research shows you can stop a cold in its tracks if you take one simple step with a new device when you first feel a cold coming on.

Colds start when cold viruses get in your nose. Viruses multiply fast. If you don’t stop them early, they spread and cause misery.

But scientists have found a quick way to kill a virus. Touch it with copper. Researchers at labs and universities agree, copper is “antimicrobial.” It kills microbes, such as viruses and bacteria, just by touch.

That’s why ancient Greeks and Egyptians used copper to purify water and heal wounds. They didn’t know about viruses and bacteria, but now we do.

Scientists say the high conductance of copper disrupts the electrical balance in a microbe cell and destroys the cell in seconds.

Tests by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) show germs die fast on copper. So some hospitals tried copper for touch surfaces like faucets and doorknobs. This cut the spread of MRSA and other illnesses by over half, and saved lives.

The strong scientific evidence gave inventor Doug Cornell an idea. When he felt a cold coming on he fashioned a smooth copper probe and rubbed it gently in his nose for 60 seconds.

“It worked!” he exclaimed.

“The cold went away completely.” It worked again every time he felt a cold coming on and he hasn’t had a cold since.

Hooky Tom Kept Albuquerque Kids In School

W

hen I was a child, my mother would often regale me with stories about a larger-thanlife figure called “Hooky Tom” who, she claimed, had been the town truant officer when she was a little girl growing up in Albuquerque. I had my doubts about the actual existence of this character, mostly because she’d tell me these stories on days when I tried (always unsuccessfully) to invent some excuse to stay home from school.

I suspected Hooky Tom might be like La Llorona, a bogey man made up by adults to scare children into behaving.

But it turns out there really was a Hooky Tom, and he did strike fear into the hearts of children—or at least those with a propensity for ditching school.

His real name was Thomas F. Morrin, and he was born in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Irish immigrant parents. He came to New Mexico for his health in 1902. He worked for a time for the Hahn Coal Company of Madrid and later as an inspector for the state Department of Health. In 1914, Albuquerque Public Schools Superintendent John Milne hired him to be the district truant officer, a post he held until his death in 1934.

Newspaper accounts describe him as a college graduate and a strong believer in the value of education who “could quote freely from the classics.”

However, where he received his degree is unknown. A lifelong bachelor, he led a simple, almost Spartan life, living for

years in a walkup hotel on the second floor of the old Korber Building on North Second Street.

On the job, Hooky Tom wore a crisp khaki uniform, a broad-brimmed hat, and a shiny gold badge. With his bushy mustache and wire-rimmed spectacles, he reminded some folks of an old time western sheriff, or maybe one of Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders. To complete his image of authority, he carried a billy club and a small riding whip. These were mostly for show. Hooky was stern but kind. The children he rounded up might get a lecture but never a beating.

For most of his career, Hooky worked on horseback, mounted on a little bay mare. His workday began with a visit to the Albuquerque Public Schools Central Office, where he’d pick up a list of the pupils absent from classes that morning. Then he’d set off on his horse to track them down.

Students quickly learned that there was little chance of eluding the relentless Hooky Tom, who knew every student in the district by sight, as well as all the hangouts where truants were likely to be found. School attendance in Albuquerque was remarkably high throughout his 20-year career.

Some of his tactics would never pass legal muster today. He thought nothing of walking into someone’s home and straight up the stairs to the offender’s bedroom. Based on his previous experience as a health inspector, he felt confident that he could tell when a child was really sick and when he was faking. Fakers were promptly marched off to school.

On one memorable occasion Superintendent Milne received a frantic call from a citizen: Hooky Tom was in a confrontation with one of her neighbors and she was afraid the two men were about to kill each other.

Rushing to the scene, Milne found them facing off, Hooky brandishing his riding whip and the other man armed with a pitchfork. Milne stopped the fight and demanded to know what was going on. It seems the man was refusing to send his children to school because he didn’t believe in vaccination, which was required for all pupils. Milne managed to convince him that the procedure was harmless, and the situation was resolved.

As the town grew larger, making his rounds on horseback was no longer feasible, so the school district provided Hooky with a Ford roadster which, with some difficulty, he managed to learn to drive, although he was then past 60.

Hooky Tom remained on the job to the very end of his life. He awoke on the morning of November 13, 1934, too sick to go to work. Three days later he decided he decided he’d better get some medical attention and telephoned for an ambulance. Although he was in great pain, he dressed in his familiar khaki uniform and insisted on walking to the ambulance unaided. He died later that day at St. Joseph’s Hospital, from an undiagnosed abdominal tumor. He was 67 years old. His body was returned to his boyhood home in Brooklyn for burial.

Boil peaches for five minutes, then cool, peel, slice and put in a greased pan.

Preparation: Place flour, cumin, pepper, salt, ancho chile, oregano molido and ground sage in a plastic storage bag. Add pork cubes and shake to coat thoroughly. Brown pork in hot oil in batches, adding a teaspoon of minced garlic to each batch. Remove when browned and set aside. (You may have to make more bags of flour mix to coat all the pork. Keep same proportions.)

Place onions, chiles, potatoes, salsa, chicken broth, brown sugar and pork in a 5-quart slow cooker. Stir and cook, covered, on low six to eight hours, or on high four hours. You may need to add more chicken broth during the cooking process.

Serves six.

W

hen does flu season begin, and how long does it last?

In the United States, flu season can begin as early as October and last as late as May. What is the difference between the flu and a cold?

Coughing, headache and chest discomfort are symptoms of both flu and colds, but the flu can often cause high fever and severe body aches for days. The flu is very different from common colds caused by other viruses.

Flu, or influenza, is a contagious respiratory infection caused by strains of influenza A or B viruses. Colds are generally minor. The flu can lead to complications such as pneumonia, which can be life threatening.

I’ve heard that older adults should be especially careful about protecting themselves from the flu. Why is that?

Flu often affects older adults much more severely than other adults. This is likely due to a combination of factors, including the decreased immunity to illnesses that occurs with aging

and the presence of other conditions, such as heart or lung disease and diabetes. A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that each year in the United States, more than 200,000 people are hospitalized because of the flu. Another estimate from the CDC notes that the number of deaths related to the flu ranges from 12,000 to 56,000 each year.

Elderly adults are disproportionately affected; about 54 to 71 percent of hospitalizations and 71 to 85 percent of deaths related to flu occur in adults over 65 years of age.

What can I do to decrease the risk of getting the flu?

The most important thing you can do to protect yourself during flu season is to get an annual influenza vaccination.

These vaccinations are available in early fall and generally provide good protection against the prevalent strains of influenza virus predicted for that flu season. Flu vaccination should begin soon after the vaccine becomes available, ideally by October. Since it takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body that protect against influenza virus infection, it is best to get vaccinated as

soon as possible so you are protected before influenza begins spreading in your community.

In addition to getting a flu shot, you can also take some simple precautions by keeping your hands clean and not touching your mouth, nose or eyes.

Try to stay away from people who are sick. If you become sick, stay home to avoid contaminating others. When you sneeze or cough, use a tissue to cover your nose and mouth. And it’s always a good idea to take care of your body and mind by maintaining a healthy diet, staying hydrated, exercising regularly and relieving stress.

Should I get the nasal flu vaccination?

Adults 50 years and older should not use the nasal flu vaccination; this form of the vaccine is only indicated for people between 2 and 49 years of age.

Is there a recommendation for the newer, stronger flu vaccination designed for people 65 years and older?

Early studies suggest that it may provide greater protection against influenza.

Are there certain people who should not be vaccinated?

People who have had a previous reaction to a flu vaccination and individuals who have allergies to eggs should not get the vaccination. If you are not sure, check with your doctor.

How effective is the flu vaccine?

Even though the flu vaccine is very effective, it is not 100 percent perfect and does not cover all possible strains of influenza. The seasonal flu vaccine protects against the influenza viruses

that research indicates will be most common during the upcoming season.

It may greatly decrease your chances of getting the flu, but there is still a possibility you could get the flu even if you got vaccinated. Also, you can still get common colds, which the vaccine does not protect against.

An annual seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to reduce the chances that you will get seasonal flu and spread it to others. When more people get vaccinated against the flu, less flu may spread through that community.

t was a once-in-a-lifetime vacation that started Cheryl Foote thinking about the very worst that could happen.

museum strolls, her mind spun down anxiety road: What if they all died in a tragic accident? What would happen to Butch, Sundance, and Jesse, their three cats, or to their loyal yellow Labradors, Sam and Emma? Who would find them? Who would care for them?

“We’ve always operated under the assumption we’d take care of each other’s pets, but if we’re all on the same plane and the plane goes down, then there’s nobody left,” said Cheryl Foote.

Whomever found our animals, “they wouldn’t know anything about the pets, and I thought that would be terrible.”

Like the Footes, Albuquerque resident Nancy Wilkins is 71. Unlike them, her three dogs and three cats are her only family. It didn’t take her imagination to run wild to consider the possibility that at least some of them might outlive her.

“To think that I might die and there was nothing in place for my animals didn’t feel right,” Wilkins said. “They’re like my kids, and you wouldn’t leave your kids without making some kind of plans for their care when you’re gone.”

Both Wilkins and the Footes found solace in an advanced planning program offered by Animal Humane New Mexico, a nonprofit shelter in Albuquerque that serves 10,000 homeless and at-risk cats and dogs annually through adoptions and its clinic. Its multifaceted pre-planning assistance includes: • Help crafting a pet profile, including photos, personality traits, medical needs, and favorite toys and pastimes, so that the next loving owner can give their cat(s) or dog(s) the best possible care.

• A referral list of estate planning professionals.

• Wallet-sized “My Pets Are Home Alone” emergency contact cards stating who is to receive pets in case the owner is incapacitated.

• A free private tour along the path their pets would take to adoption if Animal Humane were to receive them into its care.

Animal Humane will receive pets of a deceased owner and find new homes for them whether or not the owner donated to the shelter or included it in a will. However, because the nonprofit doesn’t receive city, state or federal funding, it asks to be named as a beneficiary when a person or family has the financial capacity.

“Animal Humane requests but doesn’t require a $15,000 bequest per pet,” said Stefanie English, senior director of development and marketing.

“Our goal is to relieve any worry pet owners have so that they never feel too old to have another pet,” English said. “We want them to know their pets will be cared for if they survive them.

We want people to enjoy that special companionship and love until their last days and know we will take those pets with loving arms and match them with a perfect new family.”

The peace of mind the Footes now enjoy has been well worth the bequest. “I feel much better because (our pets) are such a big part of our lives, and it would be so awful for me to contemplate someone not knowing their histories, someone not knowing their attachments. They might go through a lot more trauma or just suffer, or they might be given up (without this plan in place),” said Cheryl.

The plan also asks that their cats, who are from the same litter, will be adopted together and that their dogs, who are bonded like siblings, will live out their lives with each other.

approach the nonprofit to be second or third in line to receive their pets, especially in cases where the owner has family or friends willing to be a first choice as a future home.

“I think my kids would want to do it, but I don’t know how practical it would be,” said Cheryl Foote. “This just puts everyone’s minds at ease.”

The Santa Fe Animal Shelter, a nonprofit that serves more than 5,500 lost, stray, abandoned or injured animals each year, also expects to begin offering a menu of “legacy plans” for both humans and their pets in October, said its public business relations officer Murad Kirdar. In cases where a pet outlives the owner, the shelter’s Surviving Pet Care program will work with the estate or family and care for the pet until it can be adopted. Other pending programs involve planned gifts – regardless of pet ownership - to help the shelter continue to save lives.

Almost anyone who has experienced the trauma of making end-of-life decisions for a cat or dog knows the scenario: There’s the urgent car trip to the closest vet, where you hold your best friend for the last time, tears moistening fur, and after you’ve

Puffy-eyed, dizzy and under duress, you ask for everything, regardless of cost. You rationalize that you can’t put a price on unconditional love.

But the vet can – and your next credit card statement reflects just how much.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

“Planning ahead makes it so you can grieve the loss of your loved one and focus on the memories and not the financial aspect,” said Alicia Gardner, a pet service provider with Best Friends Pet Cremation Services.

Best Friends, which is owned by French Funerals & Cremation, offers both online and in-person advanced planning arrangements for pets. No lawyer or other legal authorization is required. A pet owner simply chooses a plan and signs a contract for products and services to be rendered at the time of need.

The company will pick up the pet from a vet or home upon its passing and lay the remains to rest at Best Friends Forever Cemetery at Sunset Memorial Park, “so you can pay your respects at any time,” said Geraldine Gallegos, advanced planning consultant

with French. Best Friends Forever also allows humans who will be cremated the opportunity to be placed with their pets.

Depending on transfer services, type of cremation and associated merchandise, cost can be anywhere from $100 plus tax to upwards of $600.

Payment plans are available.

Albuquerque Pet Memorial Service and Riverside Funeral Home in Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Los Lunas also provide personalized pet cremation, transfer and memorial merchandise, but neither offers advanced planning.

“If you pre-plan, you can decide how you want to memorialize your pet when you’re not grieving because at the moment, when you’re going through it, it’s a lot harder,” Gardner said.

The age of the owner or pet should be a non-issue, she added. “Any time is the right time for pre-planning, so if it’s on your mind, take care of it then.”

Animal care professionals suggest researching your options and talking directly with multiple local organizations and companies before deciding which is right for you and your pets.

The Prime Time 50+ Expo Is Coming Up

ree health screenings, free burritos and free entertainment – it’s a recipe for a fun-filled event, one that seniors in Albuquerque have been attending for more than two decades. Prime Time’s 23rd annual 50+ Expo health fair this year is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at the main ballroom of Embassy Suites, 1000 Woodward Place NE. Every year, between 850 and 1,000 visitors swing by for this annual merger of fun and facts. There are more than 70 vendors, including counseling services, insurance companies, home health organizations, rehabilitation hospitals and so much more.

“We feel that we provide a service for the seniors in the Albuquerque area. I can’t think of other senioronly events that are free with this much information,” said Prime Time Publisher David Rivord. “We get letters and hugs every year.

Seniors love having access to this information, to having attention paid to them and their needs. It gives them an opportunity to get in-depth information, and they have fun.”

The featured sponsor for the expo is Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico, which is also offering a pair of health seminars: • At 9 a.m., Medicare 101 is a seminar that aims to help seniors understand the various types of Medicare plans and their parts. “We know that (health fairs) can be dry. We want it to make it worth seniors’ while to come down,” Rivord said. “We give them some coffee and burritos, they walk around and meet and talk with vendors. And when they’re done, they can go to a free speaker session, and then relax and sit at the table and listen to some really good entertainment.”

Rivord said that attendees will enjoy the sounds of internationally renowned musician and entertainer Roger Burns, whose lively pop, bluegrass, jazz and classical music has earned him audiences all over the world, including in front of Queen Elizabeth.

“People like to get up and dance around,” Rivord said. “We make it fun by having giveaways every hour, too.”

Ultimately, the annual health fair is about offering an important service to PrimeTime’s core readers. “A few years ago, a woman told me our health fair saved her life,” he said. “She had a screening and was referred to her doctor, and she caught something very serious in time to do something about it.”

Getting to the event is easy: The City of Albuquerque’s Department of Senior Affairs is offering free transportation to the Embassy Suites from some of its Senior Centers in town.

Eugene Sun, MD, MBA, has served as Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Mexico since 2012.

Prior to joining BCBSNM, Dr. Sun worked for Kaiser, Regence Blue Shield, PacifiCare, Merck, and Molina Healthcare of New Mexico, among other companies.

nxiety by definition is a feeling of worry, nervousness or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.

Anxiety is not one single disorder; it comes in many varieties, such as generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social phobias, simple phobias, adjustment disorder, organic anxiety, performance anxiety, substance abuse, medication-associated anxiety and many medical illnesses. I will limit my discussion to generalized anxiety disorder and how anxiety has a role in

Risk factors for GAD include stressful life situations, personality predilection and genetics. Inherited tendencies toward anxiety may be a product of biologic and psychological vulnerabilities. Worrying may become self-perpetuating.

Psychiatry literature describes GAD as “excessive worry about multiple foci of concern more days than not, for at least six months with significant disruption to daily life.” It often has an associated dependence on alcohol, nicotine, caffeine and/or drugs. The physical signs of GAD include muscle tension, restlessness, irritability, decreased concentration, fatigue and sleep disturbance leading to an impact on daily life.

Other conditions that demonstrate anxiety include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart failure, neurologic conditions, thyroid illness and even cancer.

When a person has COPD, their risk of having GAD is increased by 15 percent. If you substitute lung cancer into the pulmonary model, 60 percent of those with

a lung cancer diagnosis have anxious symptomatology.

In heart failure patients, 49 percent of the time anxiety preceded the congestive heart failure symptoms that led to a hospitalization. Anxiety affected cardiac outcomes dramatically.

Cardiac output (the heart pump effectiveness) was decreased, as was the potential rehabilitation benefit. The amount of emotional stress, or anxiety, can lead to increased heart rate, which leads to decreased blood flow to the heart, leading to an increased work-load on the heart.

Neurological diseases aren’t spared from anxiety either. Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, seizure disorders, dementing illnesses and even migraines have components of anxiety in their symptom constellation.

We have all suffered from the gastrointestinal effects of anxiety.

Whether just prior to an interview, a performance or a test, anxiety can decrease our gut’s transit time leading to more frequent bowel movements or even diarrhea. Nausea and “butterfly sensations” may also occur.

Don’t panic! There are a number of approaches to dealing with anxiety.

Let’s start with non-pharmacologic options. Supportive psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral psychotherapy have been shown to be effective. This also includes mindfulness meditation.

When you combine pharmacologic therapy, the effectiveness of CBT is augmented. Minimize aggravating

factors such as stress, excessive caffeine and possibly medications. Ask your health care provider before making any changes in your medication regimen.

Multiple medications are available to help this condition. First-line choices to combat anxiety include the class of medications called selective serotonin uptake inhibitors. They include Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil, which decrease the uptake of the neurochemical serotonin, leading to prolonged communication between neurons in our brain.

Benzodiazepines are the second-line medications for use. These medications work on the predominant calming chemical neurotransmitter in our central nervous system GABA. These medicines include Valium, Ativan and Xanax.

A newer class of medications called serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors have gained momentum in treating anxiety. Older medications such as Amitriptyline and Nortriptyline have been used to treat anxiety, but their side effect profiles limit use. Anti-epileptic medications also have a promising but unfulfilled niche in the anxiety battle.

As always, seek the advice of your health care professional before starting any treatment regimen. That recommendation also applies to any herbal or “natural” supplements you may be considering. Medications and supplements may interact and cause untoward effects.

Anxiety is manageable. Don’t worry, be happy!

Volunteers are needed any day of the week and weekends are optional. Mileage reimbursement if required.

Senior Transportation Ride Coordinator: Answer phones, confirm ride requests and match rider and driver. (Coordinate rides). Enter information into the data base, complete rider intakes over the phone and mail packets. Volunteer must have good phone etiquette, patient, and be familiar with data entry. You must take an Abuse Awareness training class.

Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) is looking for volunteers age 55 and older who are interested in making a difference in a child’s life. Foster Grandparent volunteers must be willing to serve an average of 20 hours per week and must be able to pass a background check, physical, and tuberculosis test.

Foster Grandparent volunteers serve one-on-one with children, working with them to build their social and emotional development as well as help improve their literacy skills. Volunteers receive mileage reimbursement, supplemental liability insurance, meals while on duty, pre-service and monthly trainings, and recognition throughout the year.

Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at Presbyterian and UNM Hospitals The Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at Presbyterian and UNM hospitals offer a place for parents to rest and regroup right at the hospital, just moments away from their sick child. The Family Rooms are open seven days a week and are staffed by hospital volunteers.

The Family room volunteers greet families, maintain visitor data, stock food, drinks, and help families with their needs. Volunteers are asked to work one, three hour shift per week.

osquito season is here, so it is wise to take measures to prevent the blood-suckers from congregating in your yard.

Reduce standing water where mosquitoes can breed. Some species only need a half inch of standing water, and eggs can hatch as quickly as within a week. Make sure you change any pet outdoor drinking water and birdbath water regularly.

Keep grass cut and shrubbery trimmed to minimize hiding places for adult mosquitoes.

Make sure there are no old tires on your property.

If there are some, drill holes in them so water will drain.

Any plastic or metal containers should be upside down so they can’t collect water.

If you have plastic tarps or plastic on the ground anywhere, the folds in the material can gather water. Check and dump frequently.

Check plants with

large leaves that may collect water where the leaves join the stem. Tip the plant over if in a pot or flush it at least weekly to disrupt any mosquito breeding.

Check for water in the bottoms of plant containers, including in hanging plants.

Check for holes in trees or stumps that may collect water.

You can add food grade diatomaceous earth to any standing water to kill mosquito larvae.

Building a bat house is also not a bad idea to keep mosquito populations down, as a single bat can eat several thousand mosquitoes in one night.

Make sure all screens on doors, windows and vents are functional.

If you have cots or picnic tables outside for use in the evening, place mosquito netting around them.

Planting any of the following can also help repel mosquitoes: rosemary, lemongrass, marigold, lemon balm, lemon thyme, catnip, garlic, lavender and basil.

When you go outside, wear a good mosquito repellent. Repellents without DEET may be advisable, especially for children. For ages 2 -12, only concentrations under

10 percent should be used, and repellents should not be applied more than three times a day. Some people who are exposed to DEET have experienced negative health effects, including rashes, skin irritation, numb or burning lips, nausea, headaches, dizziness and difficulty concentrating.

Here is a recipe for a homemade repellent: Combine in a 16-ounce bottle: • 15 drops lavender oil • 3-4 Tbsp. vanilla extract • 1/4 cup lemon juice Fill bottle with water. Shake.

Considered a food-derived cognitive enhancer, the mushroom has been studied extensively for its effect on mental health. Human and mice studies have also shown promising evidence that lion’s mane may benefit a variety of areas including memory, immunity and gastrointestinal health.

A 2009 phytotherapy research study revealed positive results from a double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial with lion’s mane.

The study found a significant improvement of ‘mild cognitive impairment’ in 50- to 80-year-old Japanese men given 250 mg of 96 percent lion’s mane three times per day. The study notes that the benefits of cognitive improvement decreased after the men quit taking the supplement.

Many mice studies continue to evaluate lion’s mane in cognitive disorder research. In 2016, the Journal of Biomedical Science reported that lion’s mane had a positive effect on Alzheimer’s disease in mice studies.

on nerve axons in mice studies and also has a “direct inhibitory effect against H. pylori” found in gastrointestinal disorders.

Other studies point to the use of lion’s mane for inflammation and immune regulation, showing the full health range where this substance may be beneficial.

Lion’s mane supplements are available. You can try finding lion’s mane in a specialty market. Look for labels that include “organic” or “non-GMO.” At minimum these certifications indicate protections in place to create a quality product.

There is also a growing movement, mainly in areas such as the Pacific Northwest, where folks forage for wild mushrooms, creating a dynamic culinary product at home. While it is exciting to witness this reconnection with wild-sourcing medicinally beneficial food, proper identification of mushrooms to ensure safety is essential.
