f you, grandparents, can imagine this, there is a festival in New Mexico where children learn how to wash clothes by hand, stomp grapes with their bare feet and make their own tortillas. Now that is family entertainment from the early days of our state.

Or perhaps your young ones would prefer to step back to an earlier time and watch jousting, sword-swallowing and fire breathing?

El Rancho de las Golondrinas, 15 miles south of downtown Santa Fe, is a time-travelers’ sanctuary, a place where today’s digital-age youth can get a taste and feel for the old ways, and September is a prime time to visit.

as “bawdy” as other such fairs, which once again means this is the place to take the family to enjoy the beginning of our enchanting fall days.

The last event coming to El Rancho de las Golondrinas in September is the annual Harvest Festival, set for Sept. 30-Oct. 1.

“Harvest Festival is our marquis event,” Goodman says. “It was the first festival offered at Golondrinas back in 1972. All our attractions will be open – the blacksmith shop, the mill and the cider press. There is an opportunity to stomp grapes by foot and wash clothes by hand.”

AWARD WINNING LIVING HISTORY The mission of El Rancho de las Golondrinas (translation: Ranch of the Swallows) is to “inspire learning and preserve the legacy of the land through encounters with the traditions and culture of New Mexico’s Hispano past.”

If you are shepherding children through their teen years and need to find an alternate universe for them, six-member carnival act Clan Tynker will be on hand for the 10th annual Santa Fe Renaissance Fair from Sept. 16-17.

The living history museum appears to be living up to that goal as it has won awards from TripExpert, including the Experts’ Choice award, determined by professional reviews appearing in travel guides, magazines and newspapers. Golondrinas also was named the Best of Santa Fe. TripExpert’s travel ratings are based on reports from 70 publications.

The Renaissance Fair costs $11 for adults in advance and $12 at the door. Seniors and teens get in for $9, and children 12 and younger can attend at no cost. Festival photos and fees for visiting are posted on the museum’s website, http://golondrinas.org.

“Clan Tynker is from Santa Fe,” Goodman says, “and they travel to Renaissance fairs all over the country. It’s a pretty good deal that they are here.” He also claims that this Renaissance fair is not

Mary Colter, Designing Woman

I

f you had been a tourist visiting the Southwest by rail in the 1920s or ‘30s, you likely would have stayed at, eaten in, or passed through a building designed or decorated by Mary Colter. Although she left a distinctive mark on our regional architecture, her name is still not well known.

Only a few occupations were open to women in those days, least of all professional fields like architecture. For a woman to break into this all-male world she had to be resourceful, persistent and a bit lucky. Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter was all of these.

She was born in Pittsburgh, Penn., in 1869, and moved with her family to St. Paul, Minn., when she was 11. It was there that her lifelong interest in Native American arts and culture began.

She started collecting the artwork of nearby tribes while still in high school. In 1886, her father died, leaving Colter, her mother and older sister in financial distress.

Although just 17, Colter convinced her mother that the best way out of their difficulties would be to send her to the California School of Design (now the San Francisco Art Institute), where she could earn a degree that would enable her to support the family by teaching.

Reluctantly, her mother agreed.

While attending school she also worked as an apprentice at an architectural firm, where she learned the fundamentals of building design. After four years she returned to St. Paul, degree in hand, and found a job at a local vocational high school. There she taught drawing for 15 years, supporting her mother and sister as promised, on her $90-a-month salary. And there she might have remained but for a chance encounter with a Fred Harvey Company gift shop manager while visiting a friend in San Francisco in 1902.

Fred Harvey, as readers of this column probably know, was a transplanted Englishman who, beginning in 1876, operated a chain of hotels and restaurants

under contract with the Santa Fe Railroad along its passenger routes from the Midwest to California. More than a dozen Harvey Houses were located in New Mexico. Harvey held his establishments to high standards of quality, cleanliness and efficient service. He was also among the first entrepreneurs to envision the possibilities of “cultural tourism”—marketing the Native American and Hispanic heritage of the Southwest.

Colter shared that vision, so she mentioned to the gift shop manager that she was interested in doing design work for the company. To her surprise, a few weeks later she received a telegram offering her a job decorating the interior of the “Indian building” at New Mexico’s newest Harvey House, the Alvarado Hotel in Albuquerque.

The Indian building, located adjacent to the hotel, housed a museum displaying a collection of artifacts and a curio shop where handmade jewelry, rugs, pottery, baskets and artwork were

for sale. In another room tourists could watch Navajo weavers and silversmiths at work.

Colter poured her best efforts into the project but it was only a temporary job, and when it was completed she returned to her teaching position in St. Paul.

In 1904, the Harvey Company called again. Pleased with the work she had done at the Alvarado, they asked her to come to the Grand Canyon in Arizona and create something similar at the El Tovar Hotel complex, then under construction on the canyon’s south rim. This time, Colter was entrusted not only with the interior décor but also with the design of the building itself. The result was Hopi House, constructed of local stone and timbers by Hopi craftsmen employing traditional building techniques. It still stands, although it has undergone some major renovations.

Finally, in 1910, when she was 41 years old, Colter joined the Fred Harvey Company as a (continued on next page)

full-time interior designer and architect. Over the course of her career she was directly involved in the design or decoration of at least 20 buildings in addition to those already mentioned. A few of the others in New Mexico are El Ortiz in Lamy, La Fonda in Santa Fe, and El Navajo in Gallup. She also played a role in La Posada in Winslow, Ariz., and another half-dozen structures at the Grand Canyon.

Her philosophy was that her buildings should harmonize with their natural and cultural environment, and her works at the Grand Canyon especially reflect that. Built of rough stone, and with only natural vegetation for landscaping, they seem almost to have grown out of the rock on which they stand. Her interiors featured brick or tile floors,

exposed vigas, large fireplaces, heavy wrought iron lighting fixtures, Spanish-style furniture and lots of Navajo rugs.

By the time she retired in 1948, the railroad era was coming to an end. No new trackside Harvey Houses had been built in more than a decade, and the existing ones were closing, their beautiful furnishings going on the auction block.

“There’s such a thing as living too long,” Colter told a friend after learning that one of her cherished hotels, El Navajo, was to be demolished to make way for a highway construction project.

Colter lived out her days in her little house in Santa Fe, where she died in 1958. Perhaps it was fortunate that she did not live to see her first project, the Alvarado Hotel, fall to the wrecking ball in 1970.

H

ere’s good news about health: Flu vaccines are already available at doctor’s offices, retail stores, pharmacies and flu clinics. In fact, Sanofi Pasteur, the largest provider of influenza vaccine to the U.S., sent its first vaccine shipment last month.

You hear it all the time: “It’s just the flu.” But the flu can take on a serious and potentially lifethreatening meaning, especially for vulnerable populations, including the elderly, young children and those with compromised immune systems.1 In the spirit of National Immunization Awareness Month, let’s look at how flu impacts the U.S.and why it’s important to help protect yourself and those around you by getting immunized annually.

The flu shouldn’t be taken lightly. Influenza, combined with pneumonia, is one of the top 10 leading causes of death in older adults, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).2 Every 4 minutes, someone 65 years of age and older is hospitalized due to the flu

or flu-related complications, and every 12 minutes, someone dies from complications related to the flu, adds the CDC.2,3 During the 2015−2016 influenza season, 1.7 million estimated illnesses and 153,349 hospitalizations occurred among adults age 65 years and older.

The flu also causes more hospitalizations among young children than any other vaccinepreventable disease.4 Since 2010, flu-related hospitalizations among children younger than 5 years old ranged from 7,000 to 26,000 per season.5 Although the flu is especially harmful in these vulnerable populations, it can impact everyone. Even as a healthy adult, it is important to help protect yourself from this potentially debilitating disease.

The single best way to help prevent influenza is to get an annual vaccination, which can help reduce the risk of getting sick with seasonal flu and spreading it to others.1 Certain vaccines are developed specifically to address the age-related weakening of the immune system, so adults ages 65

We are seeking family caregivers who provide care to their loved ones with dementia.

UNM researchers are conducting a research study on health information-seeking behaviors among dementia caregivers. We will examine where family caregivers seek health information needed for maintaining their own and their loved one’s health, and what factors influence their health information-seeking behaviors.

There will be several questionnaires for you to complete regarding your current status of health informationseeking behaviors, your moods, and caregiving burden and satisfaction as well as your loved one’s physical function and how he/she is getting on with daily activities. You can fill out the survey via online or the study visit will take place at your home if you prefer.

Even though seasonal influenza activity typically occurs between October and May, the CDC recommends that people get vaccinated before influenza begins spreading in their community. This is important because it takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body that help protect against influenza.6 This flu season, spread the word about the impact of the flu and the importance of annual vaccination.

I

thought that immunizations are important only for children. Is that true?

While immunizations are very important to prevent many serious infectious diseases and their complications in children, they are also critical for the health of adults, especially adults age 65 and older or those with any chronic medical condition.

What immunizations are recommended for older adults?

The immunizations recommended for people 65 and older include an annual influenza vaccination, a Td or Tdap vaccination every 10 years, the shingles vaccination once, and a pneumococcal vaccination. Each are reviewed separately below:

Influenza Vaccination Influenza, or flu, is a disease that can lead to serious illness, hospitalization and sometimes death. Even healthy people can get very sick from the flu and spread it to others. Flu season in the United States typically begins in early October and can last as late as May. An annual flu vaccine is the best way to reduce the chances that you will get seasonal flu and spread it to others. It is important to understand that many other viruses can cause cold symptoms that people mistakenly call the flu. Those viruses are not as dangerous as true influenza viruses, and the flu vaccine does not protect against those common cold viruses.

Td or Tdap Vaccination Td vaccine protects against tetanus and diphtheria and a booster is recommended for adults every 10 years. Tetanus can occur if a wound or cut is infected with a specific bacteria

that produces tetanus toxin, which causes severe, painful muscle spasms and can be fatal in 20 percent of cases. Tdap vaccine protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (also known as whooping cough). Any adult age 19 and over who has never received a dose of this vaccine should receive one as soon as possible. Adults age 65 and over should also receive one dose of Tdap.

Shingles Vaccination Shingles is a very painful rash that can occur in people who have previously had chickenpox.

It is estimated that one in three people age 60 and over will develop shingles. The virus that causes chickenpox can remain dormant in the body for years.

If it reactivates it usually causes a rash in the distribution of a single nerve root. Sometimes after the rash resolves, chronic,

often severe pain known as postherpetic neuralgia can develop in the same area. The shingles vaccine is a weakened version of the chickenpox virus, and can help decrease the chances of getting shingles by about (continued on next page)

People age 60 and over should speak with their physician about whether to get the shingles vaccination.

Pneumococcal Vaccination Various strains of the bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae, AZT-001 also known as pneumococcus, Printsevere Ad infections, Script can cause including pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections known as sepsis. It has been estimated that about 1 million adults will contract pneumococcal pneumonia every year, with from 5 to 7 percent dying from the disease. There are two different pneumococcal vaccines available, pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (Prevnar13®) and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (Pneumovax23®). One dose of

either is recommended for adults age 65 and over.

What else should I know about vaccinations?

50+ Expo Offers Fun Way To Check Health, Learn Wellness Tips

o offense to our fabulous Albuquerque physicians, but checkups are not tops on most people’s lists of fun things to do – with one exception.

Every year, one day in October brings the Prime Time 50+ Expo, where you can down a breakfast burrito, sing along to the music of local one-man band Freddie Chavez and win prizes, all while receiving free medical attention ranging from flu shots to bone density exams.

This is the 22nd year for the health fair, which is one of just a few in Albuquerque that targets people ages 50 and older, said David Rivord, publisher of Prime Time magazine, which hosts the event. It is scheduled for 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. October 19 at the Embassy Suites, 1000 Woodward Place NE, and is made possible by title sponsor Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico, and sponsors DaVita Medical Group, Stryker and the City of Albuquerque Department Of Senior Affairs.

About 75 vendors are expected to display their goods and services, most of which pertain to health and wellness, but there will also be home improvement businesses and the like – more than enough variety to keep the anticipated 1,000 attendees interested and entertained. Prizes donated by vendors will be announced regularly throughout the event.

“Every 30 minutes or so, we grab the microphone and have some drawings and give away four or five items,” Rivord said.

“People walk out of there with a $25 gift card to a local restaurant or whatever it may be. It just adds a little bit of fun.”

It’s Chile Season

thousands of acres, thousands of farmers and thousands of pickers dedicated to the fruit. Growing chile is very much a generational enterprise, as is the annual pilgrimage so many New Mexican families make each fall to stands and markets across the state.

“I have customers where four generations have shopped with us. It’s cool how generational this is,” said Eleanor Sichler of Albuquerque’s Sichler Farms. Sichler has fond memories of driving from Santa Fe to Los Lunas to Sichler Farms as a child, when her last name was Romero. She could not have guessed that years later, she’d marry into a family for whom chile farming would be a way of life.

The Sichler family began farming in Los Lunas in 1869, and Eleanor and husband John began

the Albuquerque business 31 years ago. “We cater to a more mature clientele because they have grown up with us. It’s cool to see that group again every year. It is a great tradition because it’s a family tradition.”

This year’s harvest is expected to be beautiful and flavorful, according to local farmers. Sichler said that their 30-acre farm south of Socorro has already produced a lovely pre-season crop, and their three roasters are turning full time.

Chile-buying season typically runs from Labor Day weekend through mid-October, shortly after Balloon Fiesta. Chile can be found at many markets, including Sichler, around mid-August, but plants tend to begin to mature toward the end of the month, as soil dries up after summer monsoons. That is when the harvest tends to ramp up.

Sichler says she is thankful to have a loyal crew dedicated to putting the fire to work each year.

“I call them my dream team,” Sichler says. “There really is an art to chile roasting.”

Jim Farms said that he expects a stellar chile crop this year.

Wagner’s several locations around Albuquerque and Corrales have undergone a bit of shift this year toward organic farming.

“We are doing a you-pick celebration on Labor Day weekend, and it will be of organic chile. I’ve tasted it, and it seems better and more flavorful,” Wagner said. The event, which will be held at the nine-acre Big Jim Farms on Rio Grande Boulevard, will feature food trucks, face-painting, music and more.

Wagner said his family farms about 250 acres around New Mexico, with about 100 of that dedicated to fruits and vegetables; the rest is for alfalfa, which is used to rebuild and rest the soil for crop rotation. In the next few years, Wagner expects to head entirely toward organic farming.

Both Sichler and Wagner run farm-to-table operations, which is important for the local economy, and both believe that generational relationships and community support are important for the (continued on next page)

In the last 25 years, the acreage devoted to chile farming in New Mexico has dwindled significantly – from 35,000 acres in 1992 to 8,600 acres by 2013 – and chile is being shipped to American restaurants from all over the world, according to the New Mexico Chile Association. In fact, 82 percent of the chile consumed in America is imported, the NMCA reports. The

organization, which promotes chile on the national stage and certifies locally grown produce, has linked chile production to a $450 million contribution to the state economy and to 5,000 jobs.

Both farms are relying not only on longtime community relationships but also on new ideas. For Wagner, it’s launching full-steam ahead toward organic farming of GMO-free heritage seeds. For Sichler, it includes developing nuance with flavor, such as the farm’s celebrated roasted red chile, which is typically eaten without the embrace of a swirling fire. Customers can now join a mailing list that lets them know availability of the fresh-roasted red, created using a method that brings out sweetness, smokiness and orange undertones to the sun-reddened fruit. These days, when so much division is played out on front pages and on social media, perhaps chile can be relied upon to be the thing that brings the community together, Sichler said. “Cuisine tends to do that,” she said. “It crosses barriers in society and it makes us happy.”

Green Chile, Mushroom and Sausage Breakfast Quiche • 1 pie shell • 1 lb cleaned and chopped baby portabella mushrooms • 1 lb ground breakfast sausage • 8-12 oz. (1 cup to about 1 ½ cups) peeled and chopped green chile • ½ c. chopped fresh parsley • 3 eggs • 1 c. half-and-half • ½ c. grated Parmesan (medium cheddar also works well) • ¼ tsp. salt • 1/8 tsp. cracked pepper Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Brown sausage with mushrooms.

Remove from heat, drain grease, patting dry with paper towels if necessary. Stir in parsley. In a large bowl, beat eggs, cream, cheese, salt and pepper. Add sausage mixture and then pour into pie shell.

Bake 35-45 minutes, or until center of eggs are completely cooked. (Test with a toothpick.) Let stand 10 minutes before serving. *Note: Feel free to add flavors that you enjoy. I often include ¼ tsp. of cayenne pepper and/or ¼ tsp. of nutmeg while substituting sautéed and drained spinach for the sausage.

eptember marks the beginning of fall and the time of year that the smoky aroma of one of our favorite fruits begins to fill the air. Yes, I am talking about chile, which, along with frijoles (pinto beans) was declared the official state vegetable in 1965.

Since chile roasters have made their annual appearance in parking lots, I thought nothing could be better than a delicious and simple, stress-free recipe that my sister-in-law, Carole Otero, so generously shared with me about 20 years ago. I’ve been making these yummy green chile chicken enchiladas since then, and they’re always a hit.

I make them with no modifications, but you definitely can modify to make them your own. For example, you can adjust or add ingredients to your own taste and use chicken thighs, ground beef or no meat at all. You could also add parsley or oregano.

(Note: I’ve never used freshly peeled green chile, I always use green chile from my freezer.)

Carole’s Green Chile Chicken Enchiladas Ingredients: • 1 pint green chile (roasted green chile, hot, about 2 bags) • 2 full chicken breasts, cut into ½-inch squares • 1 medium to large onion (I use white onion) • 4 Tablespoons minced garlic (in jar) • 1 big 22-oz. can cream of chicken soup • 1 small 10-oz. can cream of celery soup • 1 12-oz. can lower sodium chicken broth • 1 large bag shredded cheese (I use the Mexican Style Blend Cheese from Costco or similar blend from Walmart) • 2 packages corn tortillas (I use yellow and white corn tortillas and alternate them) • About 2 tablespoons olive oil • About 1/4 cup water • Salt and a dash of pepper to taste • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder Directions: In a large pot, sauté onion, finely diced, in olive oil until transparent. Add salt and pepper to chopped chicken and cook until it turns white. Add the pint of green chile that has been chopped with a little salt and garlic powder. Add the minced garlic and let heat. Add cream of chicken and cream of celery soups. Stir.

Add chicken broth. Mix in water until the consistency of thick soup (thinner than clam chowder). Cook until even consistency. (continued on next page)

Spice Things Up This Fall (cont.) (continued from previous page) Assemble: Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Use two square lasagna pans (I use the disposable aluminum pans for $1 for easy clean up). Add a little water to the bottom of the pan so they won’t stick. Arrange corn tortillas so they fit in the pan. If there’s a hole, cut corn tortillas to fill the holes.

After the first layer of corn tortillas, spread mixed cheese, then soup mixture.

Repeat two to three times. The last layer should be cheese. There will be enough of the mixture to make about two layers in the second pan.

Depending on your oven, cook for 35-40 minutes. After about half an hour check to see if tortillas are mushy. If not, cook an additional five minutes.

Tortillas should be mushy.

Let stand for 15 minutes before serving. Enjoy!

This is Prime Time publisher Dave Rivord’s favorite margarita recipe: Ingredients: • 1 part frozen limeade concentrate • 1 ½ parts tequila • ½ part triple sec • 2 parts water • Coarse salt (optional) • Lime (optional) Directions: Rub rim of the glass with lime wedge; swirl glass in salt to coat rim. Combine limeade, tequila, triple sec and water in blender. Blend four to five seconds. Pour into salt-rimmed glasses. Garnish with lime, if desired.

ancer is the second leading cause of death in Americans over age 65. Not only is the incidence of cancer in this population increasing but also information regarding cancer screening is conflicting and at times confusing.

Recommendations for cancer screening in older adults vary, particularly regarding when to stop screening. Most of these guidelines are based on evidence obtained from younger patients, which can be misleading. Furthermore, individual life expectancy, other current medical conditions, functional status and personal preferences are often overlooked.

Screening for diseases in general is based on how common a disease is and the impact it has on a given population. For example, the common cold is, as the name implies, quite common but for most individuals doesn’t have a huge impact.

Screening would not be CARE appropriate.

Let us look at some common cancers in the senior population.

Breast cancer, although more

common in women, occurs infrequently in males. Screening for breast cancer in males would not be recommended. For women, mammography is the only screening test shown to reduce breast cancer deaths. Despite the fact that older age is a risk factor for breast cancer, most studies evaluating mammography have excluded women older than 74 years. The consensus panel for disease screening, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, states there is insufficient evidence to recommend for or against screening women 75 years or older. Simply said, the decision is left up to the discretion of the provider and the patient. To make the discussion even more convoluted, both the American Cancer Society and the American Geriatrics Society suggest continuing mammography beyond 75 years as long as the life expectancy is at least 10 years.

The mortality rate due to prostate cancer has been falling for an as yet undetermined cause. We tend to associate an elevated prostate specific antigen (PSA) with cancer, but benign conditions like prostatic hypertrophy can also cause a rise in the PSA.

The incidence of prostate cancer increases as we age. Seventyfive percent of prostate cancers occur in men over 65 years old.

United States. Studies report that approximately 80 percent of lung cancers are related to smoking.

Other exposures that increase risk of lung cancer include asbestos, radon, diesel exhaust and wood smoke.

All medical providers and medical societies agree tobacco cessation is a high priority. CT screens of the chest have been recommended for smokers age 55-80, with a history of tobacco use of 30 years or more, who are still smoking or who have quit within the past 15 years. Screening should be stopped once a person has not smoked for 15 years. A National Lung Screening trial with 50,000 participants studying the effectiveness of annual CT screens found that death rates due to lung cancer decreased by 20 percent.

I certainly left out other cancers that space didn’t allow

for - ovarian, colon, pancreatic, bladder, leukemias, head and neck cancers as well as skin cancers, to name a few.

Many cancers have vague early signs such as mild abdominal pain, bloating, night sweats, back pain, change in the color of skin, etc.

Please pay attention to changes in a cough, unintentional weight loss, pelvic discomfort or rectal pain.

Don’t assume all these symptoms are due to simple aging.

Each medical organization involved with cancer has its own recommendation or guidelines for screening patients of certain ages.

There may be overlap or even disagreement on what screening should be done. Don’t panic.

Continued frank discussions with your health care provider about your individual risk for cancer is the best way to determine what screening procedures are right for you.

My husband wants to have our home sprayed inside and outside regularly to control pests. I know from reading your columns you disagree with that. Can you explain why it isn’t necessary?

A: When I started in the business, I asked my supervisor why we sprayed the inside of a home.

He said we did that so the client thought he or she was getting their money’s worth. Spraying the outside is equally bad. The exterminator may kill a couple of roaches, but the company will also kill a lot of beneficial insects, including praying

mantids, ladybugs, parasitic wasps, pollinators and others.

The exterminator will in all likelihood use synthetic pyrethroid pesticides. These pesticides are not as dangerous as those used years ago, but they are capable of causing children to develop leukemia and lymphoma and can cause a pregnant woman to have an autistic child. Even if you don’t have children and aren’t pregnant, the chemicals can’t be good because if the pesticides can affect children and pregnant women, they can probably affect you in some way that you may not become aware of until years later.

They definitely are hazardous for elderly people, and there is no good reason to destroy your yard’s ecosystem and possibly affect your health.

Here is what you do: Get some Niban Bait, which is a grainlike bait made from boric acid.

Place it in the cabinets under the kitchen and bathroom sinks,

around the hot water heater, under and behind appliances, and in the garage, particularly in the corners near the garage door. Then check your outside doors. If you can slide a piece of paper under the doors, cockroaches can get in and you need to install door sweeps.

Make sure you close all of your drains at night before you go to bed, as roaches will frequently come up the drains from the sewer system or septic tank. If you haven’t got a stopper for a

sink, fill a Ziploc bag with water and put it on the drain. That will keep the roaches out. Then go around the outside of your house and look for any openings in the wall, such as around pipes or cracks in the foundation, and stuff some steel wool in any openings. Also, put some Niban in any water meters you have, as roaches like to hang out in them.

If you want to use a pest control company for roaches, insist they do what I recommended you do and avoid generically spraying pesticides. That is called “spray and pray,” where a company sprays pesticides and prays they kill something. They do, indeed, as a lot of beneficial insects and some birds will eat the dying insects. They will develop compromised immune systems and be rendered unable to breed. Only use the exterminator when you start seeing pests. There is no reason to have them spray pesticides if pests aren’t present.

Basically, there is no reason to sign a contract for pesticide applications.

ost people are interested in healthful substances that induce a feeling of calm. For me, an organic paleo brownie usually does the trick, but perhaps the next best thing on my list is holy basil tea. Holy basil, or ‘Tulsi,’ is a traditional herb of India often referred to as, “The Incomparable One.” Ayurveda (medicine of India) views rejuvenation, or “rasayana,” as essential for health and healing, and Tulsi is a critical medicinal to accomplish this. Tulsi is believed to be so powerful in India that its stalks are considered sacred ceremonial tools, and the plant is blessed and consumed daily by many. I use this divine herb as a tea for stress, but it can help with much more.

Reset Your Nervous System Classical Indian literature regards Tulsi as a longevity tonic. Modern research confirms this through the presence of several chemicals potentially involved in modulating the body’s responses to many types of stressors and illnesses.

Several animal and human studies show Tulsi’s multiple pathways in which it is capable of either protecting organ systems against toxic harm (like radiation), or capable of modulating systems to restore balance. There are many good reasons India takes this herb seriously.

An excellent collection of these findings appears in a ‘Pharmacognosy Review,’ journal

by Pattanayak et al., in 2010. It notes bioactive substances from holy basil. These elements are found to lower blood glucose and cortisol, helping with diabetes and stress. The studies showed that Tulsi offered protection for the heart and liver, and from toxic radiation.

Additionally, body tissues inside and out saw improvement when a reduction of gastric ulcers and increased wound healing were noted. Tulsi seemed to play a role

in modulating immune responses and balancing the central nervous system. The study also mentions this well-rounded herb as a good fit for inflammation and cancer because of its multifactor range.

With all of this in mind, Tulsi taken regularly, daily is apt to play a small role in these health areas. It is never advised to read these sorts of things and change your medical program.

Additionally, Tulsi is used as an anti-fertility agent, so it’s not a perfect fit for folks looking to conceive.

In India, Tulsi is used to treat colds and flu in addition to stress.

The antiseptic oils camphene, eugenol and cineole are perhaps responsible for breaking up mucous, opening the sinus and lungs, and clearing the respiratory tract of toxins. I wouldn’t have guessed this benefit because the flavor is incredibly smooth.

It plays along well with most any other flavor, making it a perfect hot or cold tea blend.

Quality supplement suppliers also carry holy basil (Tulsi) in pill and tablet forms if you’d rather stick with a stable dose that you can take anywhere.

The company Organic India specializes in the cultivation and harvesting of Tulsi plants and work only with sustainable organic farmers. They offer many flavors of tea, so if you aren’t satisfied with your first cup, try another flavor.

The local co-op, health food store and online retailers all carry it.

The Pueblo Women have earned a much deserved place in the history of the Southwest and will be remembered through the eyes of Lolita P. Christobal, Traditionalist age 95, from Santa Ana Pueblo. A pioneer who blended her life with Mother Earth based on a foundation of core values will be honored by her son Manu Rainbird, family and friends. He will share her achievements and hardships. He will share how she has made their lives better and the many changes that she has experienced in her lifetime, while still maintaining the cultural traditions passed on by her ancestors. Her strength has been one that can be compared to her warrior husband who together blazed many trails or her brother who was a POW (Purple Heart Recipient) and hero. Juan Bartolo Pena, Pvt., U. S. Army served with the Headquarters Battery 200 Post Artillery during the Bataan Memorial Death March and was murdered by Japanese guards during the March. He will also be remembered by the family. The resiliency of the Santa Ana’s dates back to at least the late 1500s and many pueblo families continue to strive to keep Mother Earth blooming in peace and harmony.
