Volcanoes In Our Backyard

Could they erupt again?”

That’s the first question anxious newcomers to Albuquerque always ask upon learning that those five rocky hills on the western horizon are actually volcanoes.

Well, rest easy. The consensus among geologists is that it’s highly unlikely. Those volcanoes — geologists call them spatter cones — were the grand finale of a series

soon lost its effectiveness. Doing something like that today would result in a hefty fine and possibly a year or two in federal prison.

Our volcanoes have suffered other abuses as well. During World War II the West Mesa was used as a target area by bomber crews training at Kirtland Field. I’m told that bomb fragments can still be found in the area just west of the volcanoes, though I’ve not seen any myself on my hikes there.

Once, there was a sixth large cone called Cinder, but it was completely quarried away in the 1950s to make cinder blocks to supply the city’s postwar construction boom and lava rock for landscaping. Most of Black Cone and part of Vulcan suffered the same fate.

By the late 1960s, local environmentalists had become concerned about the destruction of the volcanoes and mounted a campaign to preserve them along

of eruptions about 195,000 years ago that produced the 17-mile basalt escarpment that caps the West Mesa.

In addition to the five large cones, there are about a dozen smaller ones, all aligned in a roughly northsouth direction along a fissure, or crack, from which the lava erupted.

There hasn’t been any activity there since then, so the Albuquerque volcanic field is considered extinct.

That hasn’t prevented pranksters from preying on residents’ fears, however. Years ago, it used to be a popular fraternity stunt to pile old tires in the crater of one or another of the cones and set them afire to frighten the townsfolk. But the prank was repeated so often that it

Vulcan, named for the Roman god of fire, is also known as J Cone, for the large white letter J painted on its eastern flank. That stood for St. Joseph’s College (later the University of Albuquerque, and later still St. Pius X High School).

JA Cone was similarly adorned: J for Joseph and A for Albuquerque — not for John Adams Middle School, as many believe. The letters are slowly weathering away but are still faintly visible. Black and Bond cones are named for families that formerly owned land there.

with the rest of the West Mesa escarpment. They persuaded the City of Albuquerque to acquire the area as a park in the 1970s, and when Petroglyph National Monument was created in 1980, the volcanoes were incorporated into it. The monument, open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, is managed jointly by the National Park Service and Albuquerque’s Open Space Division. The volcanoes are accessible most easily from a parking area off Atrisco Vista Boulevard. Restrooms are available at the trailhead, and admission is free.

Although our local volcanoes are extinct, others around the state have been active more recently, and a couple of areas do pose a threat of possible eruption sometime in the future. I’ll discuss them in next month’s column.

early one in three older adults in the United States put off visits with their health care provider during the COVID-19 pandemic. The main reason was concern for exposure to the virus that causes COVID-19.

While we continue to fight the pandemic, I encourage everyone to get their preventive care taken care of, especially cancer screenings. It has been observed that the number of breast and colorectal cancer screenings decreased significantly in 2020 when compared to

2019. In 2021, many are getting back on track with their screenings.

Which cancers are the most common among older adults?

The risk for developing cancer increases with age. The cause of cancer varies, ranging from genetics to environment to underlying chronic conditions. The most common cancers among women are breast, lung and colorectal, and the most common among men are prostate, lung and colorectal.

How is colorectal cancer screening done?

Earlier this year the U.S. Preventive Task Force issued an update to their recommendations for colorectal cancer screening.

rising among those between 40 to 49 years old and getting screened earlier has demonstrated a moderate benefit. Screening can generally be stopped around age 75, or at the latest 85, depending on life expectancy.

There are different ways to screen for colorectal cancer in the general population. Screening can be done by a scope, a radiology test or by simply submitting a stool sample. Screening done by a scope includes either a colonoscopy or a sigmoidoscopy.

The advantage is direct visualization of the colon and the ability to take biopsies during the exam.

Additionally, if the test comes back negative you will not need another one for 10 years. The imaging test is called a CT colonography. However, if there are any abnormal findings one will need to get a scope test for further evaluation. Stool samples can be submitted every year and tested for blood, or every few years for DNA, the genetic markers for cancer. Once again if there are any abnormalities with the stool sample a scope test will be recommended. Each method has advantages and disadvantages.

How is breast cancer screening approached?

The discussion about breast cancer screening is approached based on risk. For those with average risk, the woman’s age is used to guide discussions. Screening under age 40 is not routinely recommended. Shared (continued on next page)

decision making with a health care provider is used for women ages 4049 to discuss the benefits and harms of screening. Screening is recommended for all women ages 50 to 74 years of age. The screening is performed every one to two years. For women ages 75 and older, screening is usually offered if life expectancy is at least 10 more years. Mammography is the most common way to screen. Women with moderate to high risk for breast cancer usually receive screening at a younger age and may get advanced imaging, such as a MRI. Those with strong family history of breast cancer will have an intensive screening approach, which may include genetic testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2.

What about prostate cancer screening?

Prostate cancer screening has evolved over the decades. Today, many health care providers opt to approach this with their patients who are at average risk using a shared decision-making model.

In the discussion, the health care provider will discuss the benefits and harms of screening, which include false-positive results, the need for biopsy, and potential treatment complications if prostate cancer is found. Risk factors are considered when determining the age to start screening. High risk factors include family history of prostate cancer, men who carry the genetic markers BRCA1 and BRCA2, and being Black. Those with high risk should begin screening earlier, around age 40 to 45. Prostate cancer screening is performed by using a blood test called the prostate specific antigen (PSA), which is performed every one to two years. Screening is offered up to age 70 if life expectancy is expected to be at least ten more years.

Who needs lung cancer screening?

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Screening for lung cancer is accomplished using a low dose computed tomography scan.

Screening is recommended for adults age 50 to 80 years old who are at high risk of lung cancer. High risk means having at least a 20 pack-year smoking history and are either currently smoking or former smokers who quit within the past 15 years. For other smokers, a discussion with a health care provider will help determine if screening is appropriate. Remember the best thing a person can do is stop smoking!

Are there other cancers that have screening recommendations?

Ovarian cancer screening is not recommended for average risk women.

However, women with high-risk family history should discuss whether genetic testing is needed.

Cervical cancer screening is recommended for older women up to age 65. For those who are older than 65, the decision to stop screening depends on results from past screening tests, life expectancy and other risk factors. The Papanicolaou (PAP) test is used for cervical cancer screening and performed every three years. The PAP test can be combined with human papilloma virus (HPV) testing. HPV testing alone or co-testing with the PAP test is recommended every five years.

Financial Assistance For Medicare Costs

t’s time for open enrollment again. Now is the best time to check your plan to make sure you are getting the plan that is right for you, or choose a plan if you are newly eligible due to age or disability.

Generally, if you have jobbased health insurance through your (or your spouse’s) current job, you don’t have to sign up for Medicare while you (or your spouse) are still working. You can wait to sign up until you (or

your spouse) stop working or you lose your health insurance (whichever comes first). If you are self-employed or have health insurance that is not available to all the company’s employees and the insurance is a group health plan as defined by the IRS, you may not need to sign up for Medicare.

If those criteria are not met, you should enroll in Medicare when you turn 65. See https://www. medicare.gov/basics/get-startedwith-medicare/medicare-basics/ working-past-65. If you lose your coverage, move, or have other “special circumstances”, there are additional enrollment periods that probably apply to you.

If you do not get Part B when you are first eligible, the monthly premium can go up 10% for each 12 month period you could have had

Part B but did not enroll. Usually, this penalty is paid each time you pay your premiums as long as you have Part B. Additionally, the penalty increases the longer you go without Part B coverage. There are similar penalties for not enrolling in Medicare Part D. The point: procrastinating about Medicare can be a costly mistake.

If you are nearing 65 and have health insurance through the marketplace, be sure to enroll in Medicare during the seven month period that either 1) starts three months before the month you turn 65; 2) includes the month you turn 65; or 3) ends three months after the month you turn 65. If you do not enroll in Medicare on time and are getting a subsidy, the government can bill you for the subsidy money you received once you turned 65 and did not cancel your marketplace coverage.

If you qualified for a subsidy in the marketplace, you may need help paying for Medicare as well. You may want to investigate Medicare Savings Programs, which are Medicaid programs that help pay for Medicare costs. The two Medicare Savings programs I recommend most are QMB and SLMB. Each program has its own income and resource limits: Qualified Medicare Beneficiary Program (QMB). This program pays for Part A and and/or Part B premiums so that Medicare providers cannot charge you for services and items Medicare covers, like deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. The maximum charge in 2021 for prescription drugs covered by Medicare Part D is $4.00 per prescription.

The individual monthly income limit for QMB in 2021 is $1,094, and the married couple income limit is $1,472. The individual resource limit is $7,970, whereas the married couple resource limit is $11,960.

The individual monthly income limit for SLMB in 2021 is $1,308, and the married couple income limit is $1,762. The individual resource limit is $7,970, whereas the married couple resource limit is $11,960.

This is the program that most Medicaid “dual eligibles” receive when they qualify for Medicaid and are also on Medicare. In other words, Medicaid pays for Part B premiums.

Extra Help is a program to allow those with low income and resources pay for Medicare Part D costs such as premiums, deductibles, and co-insurance. You will have to check with your drug plan to make sure you are paying the right amount. Medicare may notify you that you are qualified, or you can provide documentation to show you have Medicaid and live in an institution or get home and community based services under a Medicaid waiver program.

After you provide this information to your drug plan, the plan must ensure you pay no more than the low income subsidy drug coverage cost limit, which is $3.70 for generic prescriptions, and $9.20 for brand name drugs—provided the drugs are covered in the program.

The Program of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly, or PACE, also helps pay for Medicare and medication costs, provided you qualify medically and financially.

This program is not available in every county in New Mexico.

The standard Medicare premium is currently $148.50, but increases if you are considered high income.

There is a similar adjustment for Medicare Part D premiums based on income.

Both Torrez and Presbyterian’s director of sales, Jim Decker, said most of their members had used telehealth services in the last year as a way to keep current with doctor visits, without exposing themselves to possible contagion in a traditional office setting.

Presbyterian is broadening offerings as well, most notably within vision and dental benefits.

Indeed, many people with Medicare are at higher risk for a serious Covid-19 illness due to age and/or pre-existing conditions.

Should you contract the novel coronavirus, all Medicare plans will cover Covid-19 vaccines, testing, and treatment, at no cost, as required by the U.S. government.

One of the biggest changes anticipated from providers in 2022, including those in New Mexico,

is the integration of telehealth into Medicare Advantage plans. This is because telehealth, or virtual doctor visits, have officially become part of mainstream medical practice nationwide since Covid-19 altered patients’ needs and expectations.

Citing data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the National Law Review wrote in September that 15,000 Medicare patients received a telemedicine service weekly before the pandemic. By April 2020, that number grew to nearly 1.7 million Medicare patients each week, and between mid-March and midOctober 2020, more than 24.5 million patients (about 40 percent of all Medicare patients) had received a telemedicine service.

In 2021, the number of private Medicare Advantage plans was so great that the average Medicare beneficiary could choose from 33 offerings – the largest number available in the last decade. While so many choices can be paralyzing, the wide range of offerings is even more reason to make sure you are receiving the most appropriate and comprehensive health care coverage for your unique needs.

Original Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage Seniors who do not wish to enroll or re-enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan with a private provider can always opt for Original Medicare, with a prescription drug benefit. But expect changes here, too, mostly to costs.

The CMS announced earlier this year that the average 2022 basic Part D premium is projected to increase by about 5 percent, from $31.47 in 2021 to $33 in 2022.

(The Medicare Part D program helps people with Medicare pay for both brand-name and generic prescription drugs.)

Deductibles for Medicare Part A (hospitalization) and Part B (visits to doctors and testing) have also increased. Part A’s premium has risen 6.7 percent, from $135.50 to $144.60, and Part B has jumped 7 percent from $185 to $198.

After the deductible is met with Original Medicare, you pay 20 percent of the cost, or 20 percent coinsurance, for common health services like office visits or outpatient surgery. Most Medicare Advantage plans, on the other hand, use copays, or a fixed cost per service.

Medicare Advantage plans also have fixed networks of doctors and hospitals, whereas with Original, you can go to any doctor or facility that accepts Medicare.

It is important to note, too, that Original Medicare does not cover many of the items and services that Advantage plans do and that seniors often need. These include most dental care, eye exams (for prescription glasses), dentures, routine physical exams, hearing aids and exams for fitting them, and long-term care.

In short, there are myriad considerations for seniors when deciding what plan is right for them. MedicareFAQ.com offers the following checklist:

• What are my predicted annual medical costs going to be?

• Is my doctor still in my plan’s network of providers?

Remember that if you didn’t enroll in Medicare when you were first eligible, you cannot use the upcoming fall open enrollment period to enroll. You will be able to use the Medicare general enrollment period, January 1 to March 31. This coverage will take effect July 1, 2022.

Speakers - The speaker series begins at 9 a.m. with Kathi Rieger, founder of Medicare Benefits Advisor, LLC., who is scheduled to talk from 9 to 10 a.m. Rieger is a locally-based broker who offers Medicare enrollment services on a nofee basis and represents all the locally available Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and

Medicare Prescription Drug plans. Because seniors’ preferences, health issues, and resources differ widely, Rieger says her goal is always to “fit the plan to the person.”

After a Medicare plan has been chosen, Rieger takes care of most of the often-complex paperwork required for enrollment.

Dr. Wei-Ann Bay is set to speak at 10 a.m. Dr. Bay has been chief medical officer at BCBSNM since 2020, after serving as its medical director from 2018-2020. Dr. Bay is responsible for the development and clinical oversight of BCBSNM’s health care management programs and serves as a liaison with the other managed care organizations that administer the New Mexico Medicaid program.

The final speaker, certified thanatologist Gail Rubin, is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Rubin is the self-titled Doyenne of Death, a pioneering death educator who uses humor, television, film clips, and outside-the-box activities to teach

about death and encourage end-of-life planning.

An award-winning speaker and author, Rubin’s books include “A Good Goodbye: Funeral Planning for Those Who Don’t Plan to Die” and “Kicking the Bucket List: 100 Downsizing and Organizing Things to Do Before You Die.” She has also “knocked ‘em dead” with her TEDxABQ talk, “A Good Goodbye.”

Heart Disease Is Often Subtle In Women – Know the Signs, What to Do, and How to Prevent It

H

eart disease is the leading cause of death among women in the United States.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it accounts for 20% of female deaths.

Coronary artery disease, also commonly known as coronary heart disease or atherosclerosis, is the most common type of heart disease. More than 6% of women over the age of 19 are afflicted by it, which can lead to a heart attack or heart failure.

Heart conditions for which women are at higher risk than men include cardiac syndrome X, angina (chest pain), and broken heart syndrome (stress-induced cardiomyopathy).

Women can also be affected by several other heart conditions.

These include heart failure, heart valve disease, arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), and atrial fibrillation (Afib).

Prevention Several risk factors for heart disease cannot be modified. Family history, race, gender, menopause, and age all play a role in heart disease. Still, many risk factors can be changed, according to Cleveland Clinic. To reduce your risk for disease: • quit smoking • lower your total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides • increase your HDL (good) cholesterol • reduce your blood pressure if it is high • keep diabetes under control • maintain a healthy body weight • eat heart-healthy foods • exercise regularly • reduce your stress Also, a drink a day may offer some benefit to your heart by increasing your HDL cholesterol. But medical experts caution against more than one drink per day. Studies have found high alcohol consumption can damage the heart. Although some

studies suggest alcohol may be beneficial in moderation, others have shown the opposite. Cleveland Clinic recommends if you don’t already drink alcohol, not to begin.

Heart attack signs Women can experience all the same symptoms as men. Often, however, women experience heart attacks differently. Most notably, women don’t always experience crushing chest pain. Instead, they may feel tightness or pressure in their chest. As a result, symptoms can go unnoticed or are easily brushed off. If the pain or discomfort goes away and then comes back or lasts for more than a few minutes, it could be a symptom.

Other symptoms include: • shortness of breath • pain, discomfort, weakness, or heaviness in either arm • discomfort in the neck, jaw, upper back, shoulders, or stomach • indigestion, nausea, or vomiting • cold sweats

• fatigue • sleep disturbance • dizziness or lightheadedness What to do if you’re having a heart attack Call 911 immediately and have them dispatch emergency medical services (EMS). This is usually faster than having someone drive you to the hospital.

Also, if you’re in a public place, such as work or a store, a defibrillator may be available. Ask whoever you see first to check.

Defibrillators come with easy instructions and could save your life.

Finally, take an aspirin, says Anthony Komaroff, MD, editor-inchief of “Harvard Health Letter.”

He recommends a standard dose of 325 mg that isn’t coated. “Chew it, and then swallow it with a glass of water,” says Komaroff, to quickly get it into your system. This can slow blood clotting and limit damage to your heart.

My ex-husband died last year, so I would like to find out if me or my 17-year-old daughter are eligible for anything?

Divorced Survivor Dear Divorced, If your ex-husband worked and paid Social Security taxes and you and/or your daughter meet the eligibility requirements, you may very well be eligible for survivor benefits, but you should act quickly because benefits are generally retroactive only up to six months.

Here’s what you should know.

How Does Social Security Work When a Spouse or Ex-Spouse Dies?

Social Security taxes dies, certain members of that person’s family may be eligible for survivor benefits including spouses, former spouses and dependents. Here’s a breakdown of who qualifies.

Widow(er)’s and divorced widow(er)’s: Surviving spouses that were married at least nine months are eligible to collect a monthly survivor benefit as early as age 60 (50 if disabled). Divorced surviving spouses are also eligible at this same age, if you were married at least 10 years and did not remarry before age 60 (50 if disabled), unless the marriage ends.

How much you’ll receive will depend on how much money (earnings that were subject to Social Security taxes) your spouse or exspouse made over their lifetime,

and the age in which you apply for survivor benefits.

If you wait until your full retirement age (which is 66 for people born in 1945-1954 and will gradually increase to age 67 for people born in 1960 or later), you’ll receive 100 of your deceased spouses or exspouses benefit amount. But if you apply between age 60 and your full retirement age, your benefit will be somewhere between 71.5 – 99 percent of their benefit.

There is, however, one exception.

Surviving spouses and ex-spouses that are caring for a child (or children) of the deceased worker, and they are under age 16 or disabled, are eligible to receive 75 percent of the worker’s benefit amount at any age.

Unmarried children: Surviving unmarried children under age 18, or up to age 19 if they’re still

attending high school, are eligible for survivor benefits too. Benefits can also be paid to children at any age if they were disabled before age 22 and remain disabled. Both biological and adoptive children are eligible, as well as kids born out of (continued on next page)

wedlock. Dependent stepchildren and grandchildren may also qualify.

Children’s benefits are 75 percent of the workers benefit.

You should also know that in addition to survivor benefits, a surviving spouse or child may also be eligible to receive a special lump-sum death payment of $255.

Dependent parents: Benefits can also be paid to dependent parents who are age 62 and older. For parents to qualify as dependents, the deceased worker would have had to provide at least one-half of the parent’s financial support.

But be aware that Social Security has limits on how much a family can receive in monthly survivors’ benefits – usually 150 to 180 percent of the workers benefit.

Switching Strategies Social Security also provides surviving spouses and ex-spouses some nice strategies that can help boost your benefits. For example,

if you’ve worked you could take a reduced survivor benefit at age 60 and switch to your own retirement benefit based on your earnings history – between 62 and 70 – if it offers a higher payment.

Or, if you’re already receiving retirement benefits on your work record, you could switch to survivors benefits if it offers a higher payment.

You cannot, however, receive both benefits.

You also need to know that if you collect a survivor benefit while working, and are under full retirement age, your benefits may be reduced depending on your earnings – see SSA.gov/pubs/EN-05-10069.pdf.

hodiola is an effective tool for helping to manage stress and increase energy. When taken as part of a healthy diet, rhodiola can help strengthen the brain and boost cardiovascular health.

The Complementary & Alternative Medicine for Mental Health team compiled an updated manual in 2016, listing evidence-based approaches, ANSWER TO #5156

In fact, Vikings and high mountain dwellers throughout Europe and Asia took this ancient herb for thousands of years. Rhodiola was a Siberian elixir of longevity drunk in the winter to guard the lungs against disease. It thrives in tundra-like conditions native to the circumpolar region of the world.

Rhodiola is a perennial plant with red, pink, or yellow flowers that grow in harsh rocky conditions at elevations of 11,000 to 18,000 feet. Its strength is a representation of the benefits it offers in bolstering endurance and combatting fatigue.

Rhodiola may help chemical neurotransmission and balance the autonomic nervous system. Its overall stress reduction supports the cardiovascular system by decreasing

stress hormones that elevate blood pressure and threaten heart disease.

Rhodiola contains many beneficial compounds depending on the variety selected. Roseroot, or R. rosea, gets its name because its smell resembles that of a rose. This variety of rhodiola contains the chemical compound rosavin known to offer stress reduction, stamina, and mental clarity.

Rosavin is also shown in animal studies to reduce visceral fat and curb cravings. Rosavin breaks down belly fat through the stimulation of a fatbusting enzyme called lipase. It also balances cortisol levels, which reduces hunger and abdominal weight gain.

R. rosea also contains salidroside.

Salidroside protects neurons from oxidative stress by activating antioxidant enzymes. It also regulates proteins and enzymes involved in brain atrophy and cognitive decline.

Salidroside reduces cell damage while protecting and enhancing mitochondria, which may add to how the herb is responsible for helping athletic performance.

Many elect to take rhodiola in a supplement form, while others prefer

to drink it as tea. Try it as a preworkout supplement or to kick mental activity into gear. As a mental help tool, it is not addictive, unlike caffeine; the body will not accommodate the tolerance to rhodiola.

A typical dosage is around 300 milligrams, two times per day.

Consider beginning with 100 milligrams two times per day, adding slowly if possible. Take rhodiola on an empty stomach and outside of other stimulants for best results.

Select the Siberian variety of R. rosea rhodiola with a 3:1 ratio of rosavin to salidroside. Powdered rhodiola can be a burden, so look for a capsule or tincture (alcohol extract) form. Go with a reputable company that assures the identity and concentration of the active compounds, and as always, organic is best.

You can practice managing your energy and stress with rhodiola this fall before the holiday season begins.

all is here, and with it comes the option to enroll in Medicare health plans. While you are examining the variety of insurance coverage available, it is a good idea to consider screening tests as among the benefits you seek. This topic is especially important now, after many of us have delayed typical annual exams due to the recent pandemic.

The following recommendations are from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.

Men ages 65-75 who have smoked should have an abdominal ultrasound to screen for a smoking-related condition called abdominal aortic aneurysm. This is a weakening of the wall of the large artery that supplies blood to the lower half of the body.

It is also recommended to screen

annually for lung cancer with lowdose computed tomography for people ages 50 to 80, who have a 20-pack per year smoking history and who either still smoke or have quit within the past 15 years. Screening should be discontinued once a person has not smoked for 15 years. Screening can also be eliminated if a health problem develops that substantially limits life expectancy or the patient’s ability or willingness to have curative lung surgery has changed.

The task force recommends initiating low-dose aspirin use for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease and colorectal cancer in ages 50 to 59, who may be at risk and who are not at risk for bleeding.

Before starting any aspirin-containing products, please consult your health care provider.

Screening for colorectal cancer is recommended for ages 50 to 75.

The task force recommends selective screening for colorectal cancer in people between the ages of 76 and 85. Evidence indicates that the net benefit of screening all persons in

this age group is small. One’s overall health, prior screening history, and preferences should be considered and discussed with your provider.

Social distancing is one of many triggers that can predispose a person to sadness or depression. If you experience feelings of loneliness, lack of energy, change in appetite, or sleep patterns occur, please consult your provider regarding a depression screen.

Research has shown that the home can be a dangerous place for falls.

The task force recommends exercise interventions to prevent falls for ages 65 or older and who are at increased risk for falls. This assessment is simple and can be arranged by your provider.

It is not suggested to routinely screen senior men for prostate problems, but older men should enter into a risk/benefit discussion with your provider. If, on the other hand, urinary symptoms are present, a digital rectal exam and prostate-specific antigen test may be warranted.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Women age 55 and older may either continue to have an annual mammogram or switch to a mammogram every other year. As long as a woman is in good health and expected to live 10 or more additional years, mammograms may be performed at least every two years.

This recommendation should take into consideration breast cancer risk factors and medical history.

After age 65, most women who have not been diagnosed with cervical cancer or precancer can stop having pap smears as long as they have had three negative tests within the past 10 years.

This list of screenings is not allinclusive. It is advisable to speak to your health care provider about what screenings are appropriate for you. Remember that all of the above statements are recommendations only, and any decision regarding screening should be an individual one made with the input of your health care provider.
