Albuquerque Little Theatre Introduces A New ProgramSpecifically For Senior Artists

A

LT is looking for seasoned and eager-but-inexperienced actors, singers, technicians, and playwrights for an exciting new program. The program will offer training and performance opportunities tailored specifically to artists 55 and older.

Led by award-winning actor, director and arts educator Staci Robbins, members of the company will train together in weekly “workouts” that include improvisation, scene study, character development, script development and rehearsal for MainStage, Readers Theatre, and touring productions. The group will develop a repertoire of classic and contemporary offerings as well as write, design and produce work developed by its members. Membership fees for the program are based on a semester-long commitment (12 weeks).

Says Robbins, “There aren’t a lot of opportunities for older artists, particularly actors, to work on local stages. These artists are healthy, active and have a life’s worth of emotional

experiences to share, but there simply aren’t enough age-appropriate roles out there. This rep company style troupe will offer a wonderful opportunity for engagement in, and with, a supportive group of like-minded individuals, continually exploring their creativity while contributing to the enrichment and education of the community.”

The program will run January 23 April 24th on Tuesday mornings. It will culminate in a showcase for the public on May 1st. Anyone interested in this new performance program is invited to attend an informational meeting on Saturday, November 4th at 2 pm at the Albuquerque Little Theatre. The meeting will include presentations from the ALT Executive Director Henry Avery as well as program director Staci Robbins. There will also be a discussion where YOU can help us shape this program. We look forward to seeing you there!

W

hat is arthritis?

Arthritis is inflammation of one or more of the joints in your body and can involve any joint, but the hands, spine, hips and knees are commonly affected. The main symptoms of arthritis are joint pain and stiffness, which typically worsen with age. Pain and stiffness can be worse in the morning and improve as the day progresses. It is believed that about 55 million adults in the United States, or almost one in four, have been diagnosed with arthritis. Fifty percent of adults 65 years and older have been diagnosed with arthritis.

What causes arthritis?

Arthritis is a general term for damage to the cartilage and bones surrounding joints. There are about 200 different conditions that can cause arthritis. They include rheumatologic conditions, infection, injury, wear and tear and others. Where normal joints move smoothly with very little

friction, arthritic joints lose range of motion, don’t move as well and cause pain.

What problems arise because of arthritis?

As a result of the joint pain and decreased range of motion, arthritis is the leading cause of disability for adults in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one in 25 adults in the United States have work limitations due to arthritis. In addition, adults with arthritis are more likely to sustain falls than those without arthritis. Arthritis also can make it more difficult for people to get around their home and do the activities they enjoy.

What are the most common types of arthritis?

One common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis (also known as degenerative joint disease, or DJD), which is due to aging and wear and tear. Osteoarthritis commonly affects joints that bear weight: the spine, hips, knees and feet. Another common type is rheumatoid arthritis, which is an autoimmune disease. In this type of arthritis, the body’s immune system that normally protects you from

bacteria and viruses also attacks and damages joints for reasons that are not well understood.

Rheumatoid arthritis can affect multiple joints in the body, including the hands, wrists, elbows and shoulders.

What are risk factors for arthritis?

Age, gender and genetics are three risk factors for arthritis.

The older one is, the higher the risk for arthritis. Women are at greater risk for most types of arthritis than men. Some specific genes are associated with arthritis.

People with previous joint injuries are at higher risk, as are people with obesity. People with work occupations that involve repetitive bending and squatting have a higher risk for arthritis of the knee.

What are the common forms of treatment?

For osteoarthritis, there is no treatment that will stop or reverse the joint damage. Treatment is focused on reducing pain and maintaining function by using anti-inflammatory medicines, such as ibuprofen or naproxen, and by staying physically active. No matter the discomfort or pain, do

what you can to move on a daily basis. Simple walking is great exercise. Gardening or housework can keep you moving as well.

Autoimmune arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis can be treated with medications that can help to control the disease.

If you have joint pain or aches, consider checking with your doctor to see what may be causing it and to seek recommendations on how to treat the pain and stay active.

connections that will be revealed during a very special show at this year’s Western Music Association Convention, running November 8th through 12th in Albuquerque. “’Cowboy’ and ‘Western’ are concepts well-known around the Earth,” said Rick Huff,

producer of the special 3P.M. Saturday afternoon showcase called The Western World Tour. “but we’re showcasing songs from international horse and ranching cultures and some from other lands that honor our own traditions.

We’re also saluting some American cowboy cultures not often celebrated.”

Western songs included in the showcase come from England, Scotland, Germany, Luxembourg, China, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Mexico, Canada and also the Hawaiian Paniolo, American Indian and Florida Cracker culture. “People are going to be amazed,” Huff adds enthusiastically. “It really shows that the definition of Western deserves to be expanded.”

Musically Western is most often acoustic in its core instrumentation, its lyrics dealing with the lives, loves, lore, locales, legend and legacy of the new and old west, its many peoples or cowboying worldwide! “That last part of defining Western Music is going to be crucially important for its future,” Rick Huff muses, “because the world still appreciates the cowboy while much of America has lost touch.” Many New Mexicans who have come to treasure the WMA’s annual stop here have joined the organization’s state chapter to get their Western Music fixes all year long (www.westernmusicnm.org).

Perspectives Of Caregiving: Challenges And Blessings

M

y grandmother suffered from a stroke when I was just 13 years old.

I could not fathom what she was

experiencing during this time. She was a pillar in our community - an educator and a cultural specialist known by many in our small hometown.

Her stroke resulted in the loss of mobility of her left arm and leg. As a grandson, all I could do was give her constant hugs and companionship. She endured months of rehabilitation with her children and family by her side. Upon her return home, she was welcomed back with warm love.

Our lives were changed as we cared for her.

This was shared through coordination led by our family - our built-in care team. As a teenager, I would assist with housekeeping, laundry, cooking and errands around town. I even learned to pop wheelies in her wheelchair, as most upstanding grandsons

proudly would in their teenage years.

More than a decade later, I learned of the toll that my grandmother’s primary caregiver, my oldest sister, experienced as the live-in caregiver.

It was a time-consuming job to help Grandma with bathing, dressing, daily planning and doctor visits.

After contributing her life to this care, she also endured ridicule from non-participatory uncles and aunts who would merely advise where her care for Grandma could improve.

These words were all they ever contributed. They didn’t consider how difficult it was to watch Grandma’s health deteriorating and the intense care it required.

A few select family members and I shouldered the care needs of our sweet grandma. Through those later years, I experienced many moments of joy. My heart connected with hers as I helped her with dressing and putting on her shoes, which was the most touching care task I performed. Her tender feet and toes were dressed in socks to protect her while in her shoes. I felt humbled as I realized that without my help,

she could never do this on her own. Never.

My wife and I had three children that she cradled with her one good arm. She would beg to hold them when they were little. Her kisses upon their heads were as warm pulses of enduring love in my heart.

I loved to count them, one-two-three, as she left each kiss with affection.

A family caregiver is the unsung hero of the team. The labors of sacrifice in time and body are immeasurable. From this I learned a deeper love, a stronger respect, and a newfound respect for caregivers both familial and professional.

If you or someone you care about is among them—or hopes to be someday—it may be wise to heed these five hints on keeping healthy, active and painfree as you age. They come from Dr. Bob Arnot, an award-winning author of 12 books on nutrition and health, and former chief medical correspondent for CBS and NBC. Healthy Aging Ideas 1. Give good health a shot. Get your flu, shingles and pneumonia immunizations. Follow your

doctor’s advice about regular cancer screening tests, stress tests and bone density measurements.

Head off some of the problems of aging before they occur.

2. Stay mentally alert. Read the newspaper every day. Do the crossword puzzle. Play bridge or chess. Take—or teach—a class.

Keeping your mind engaged could ward off the brain changes that lead to Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Stay socially active, too. If friends and family are far away, see if you can communicate electronically with computer programs such as Skype.

You’re never too old to quit.

4. Eat right. In addition to lots of fruits, vegetables and a few lean meats, older people should

consume foods with vitamin B12, such as fortified cereals. Also, add flavor to foods with spices and herbs instead of salt and look for low-sodium packaged foods.

Drink three cups of fat-free or low-fat milk throughout the day or the equivalent in yogurt, cheese or other dairy products.

5. Be physically active. Regular activity can help delay, prevent or manage many costly chronic diseases faced by adults 50 years old or older. Try for at least 2½ hours of moderate-intensity physical activity a week. Do it in increments of 10 minutes or more. Bike, dance, walk for cardiovascular health. To help preserve your balance, add strength-building activities such as lifting small weights at least twice

a week. Check with your doctor about the regimen that’s best for you.

Silver Horizons To Induct Three Women Into Senior Hall Of Fame At Gala Annual event helps raise money for nonprofit serving low-income elderly

T

here is a gala happening this month that’s much less about pomp than it is about circumstance. That’s because amid the dinner talk and DJ tunes, its primary objective is to honor people who are dedicated to helping those who find themselves struggling, often through no fault of their own.

The Silver Horizons 35th Senior Hall of Fame event is set for 6-9 p.m.

November 15 at the Albuquerque Marriott Pyramid North, 5151 San Francisco Road NE, where a formerly homeless immigrant, a dental hygienist and a serial volunteer will be inducted into the Senior Hall of Fame for their near-heroic efforts to help local lowincome seniors.

Silver Horizons is the only nonprofit in the Albuquerque area that is 100 percent dedicated to serving impoverished seniors. Its annual Senior Hall of Fame was designed not only as its primary fundraiser but also to honor individuals who have dedicated a good portion of their lives to a similar mission. Inductees need not have worked with Silver Horizons;

in fact, most of the 133 honored individuals to date have not.

“It is a celebration. It’s a celebration of these people’s accomplishments and efforts,” said Hall of Fame selection committee chair T.J. Schneider.

Raising the number of Hall of Famers to 136 this year are: • Cathy Elliott, 69, who said this about the award: “It’s overwhelming and quite humbling. I am a senior for sure, but I don’t know about a Hall of Famer. It is a big deal.”

A dental hygienist for 46 years, Elliott began noticing that some of her older patients would stop coming to the office for care. Reasons varied.

Some developed health problems that made it difficult to get there. Some lost transportation. Others became financially incapable of sustaining dental care.

“It made me sad,” Elliott said. “So, I started a dental care program that we would go straight to a patient’s home or care facility to provide service because I noticed that those people who are home bound or have special needs are basically neglected by the dental community. Dentists don’t have portable or mobile equipment usually.”

She incorporated Dental Care in Your Home in 2010 and began seeing patients in 2012.

Poor oral health, denture needs, and the pain and suffering that can come from mouth infections or gum disease are the obvious medical conditions Elliott’s nonprofit helps to treat. While critical, there are equally important emotional and social byproducts of her work.

Dental problems can make speaking and eating difficult. Those challenges often lead to anxiety, depression, even reclusiveness.

“And if they don’t have teeth, they don’t want to smile,” Elliott said.

Thanks to her, seniors in Albuquerque are not only receiving quality dental and gum care that will help extend their life; they are also having their quality of life renewed.

• Debbie Johnson, who experienced homelessness first-hand when she moved to America from her native Nigeria, is founder and executive director of TenderLove Community Center.

The center offers homeless and low-income women a free year-long training and mentoring program that helps them become self-sustaining by teaching them job and life skills. It also helps them develop independence, self-reliance, and self-esteem, as well as the ability to contribute to the empowerment of others.

At least half of those served have been women over age 65.

“Last year, one of our graduates was 91 years old at graduation, whose mission about graduation came true, as that was the first graduation experience in her entire life,” said Johnson.

Johnson lost her parents at an early age, which is one reason she enjoys helping the senior population. “I feel like I still have my parents each time I am around elderly people,” she says.

Most of the seniors participating in the program experience problems in daily living because of chronic illnesses or health-related disabilities.

Of those who graduate, 93 percent are in stable housing and 85 percent are self-supporting, according to William Miller, a TLCC volunteer who wrote a letter supporting Johnson’s nomination.

“She has plainly made a substantial difference, perhaps a life-saving difference for dozens of senior women whose lives are far better because of her,” Miller wrote.

Of winning the award, she said: “It’s validation that all the things I’ve been doing all these years just because I want to help have also been valued by others. It’s nice to see it’s not all just for my own self-fulfillment. That makes me feel really good.”

Punt grew up in a very low-income area of northern Michigan, where food pantries were essential to the survival of many seniors. When she learned about Silver Horizons and its (continued on next page)

mission, she says, she realized it provided a way for her to give back with the same kind of help her own family needed so many years ago.

Punt started as a Silver Horizons volunteer in 2009, heading the silent auctions for the annual Senior Hall of Fame many years in a row. She later joined the board, became secretary and has served as the nonprofit’s president for the last year.

However, positions and titles are not what earned Punt a spot in this year’s Senior Hall of Fame; it was her countless hours of work, often thankless and always exhausting, serving Albuquerque’s low-income seniors for almost a decade.

There isn’t an area of the organization Punt has not at some point had her hand or her heart. She has cheered from the sidelines, led and organized the front lines, manned the back doors, collected and decorated baskets and food and tables and nametags, brainstormed out the old ways and ushered in the new, opened and closed hundreds of refrigerators and freezers, stocked as many shelves, and held as many hands.

“Everything I can do to help our seniors, I’ll do that,” she said. “I know how important it is for them to feel like they’re not begging for food. … The more we find out about our seniors’ inability to pay for healthful food, or prescriptions and then sometimes raising grandkids -it can be a lot.

“I’m there to pound the drum and spread the word that our seniors who have done so much for our communities through their working lives and their family lives need our help now.”

Silver Horizons provides free groceries monthly, including fresh produce, meat, bread, and even pet food and toiletries to about 2,000 impoverished seniors age 50 and older living in Bernalillo, Sandoval and Valencia counties, through Senior Food Markets and home deliveries.

raising, thus helping two generations facing hunger together. New Mexico ranks second in the nation for senior hunger and senior malnutrition, and first in the nation for childhood hunger.

The Senior Hall of Fame event, which helps raise money for the services Silver Horizons provides, is expected to draw almost 300 attendees.

In addition to dinner, there will be a silent auction and entertainment by Big Oldies DJ Bobby Box. Tickets cost $75 per person.

A six-person selection committee determined this year’s winners from eight nominees. Schneider called all of the nominations “impressive.”

“I was impressed by their means to give of themselves but also that they found the areas of need that were important to our community and they took that upon themselves,” she said.

“To quote one of our nominators, ‘They’re ambassadors for volunteerism.”

The selection process was conducted blindly. Committee members did not have name of nominators or of nominees, and winners were ultimately chosen according to a rubric system.

The committee was composed of two Silver Horizons volunteers, two community members who knew nothing about the organization and two former Hall of Fame inductees.

To have been considered, a nominee need not have been a senior. Nonseniors must have made significant contributions toward improving the lives of seniors in Sandoval, Santa Fe, Valencia or Bernalillo counties.

Senior nominees – 50 or older – must demonstrate accomplishments or service that have greatly benefited the community and must have been active in that service at the time of nomination.

Silver Horizons’ Senior Hall of Fame Exhibit Celebrates 35 Years of Volunteerism

By Autumn Gray Few things have the ability to captivate us, motivate us or bring us together as much as a good story, especially when it’s true. And so it goes for a new permanent exhibit at the Albuquerque Convention Center. As of this month, 136 photo-narrative documentaries chronicling highlights of some of Albuquerque’s most selfless residents will be on display in celebration of volunteerism. What makes the installment even more special is that most of the people who are featured are over the age of 65.

The exhibit is a Senior Hall of Fame, honoring 35 years of volunteers who have given back to the community through their work, and recognized by local nonprofit Silver Horizons. The organization assists seniors living on approximately $700-$900 per month by providing them with healthful food and helping with utility costs.

“What’s really special is this display is not just faces and names – it’s storytelling. The exhibit tells how each of these people improved the lives of seniors or bettered the community,” said Silver Horizons executive director Ron Hidalgo. “It’s an opportunity to learn and be inspired, and it celebrates what’s right and good in New Mexico.”

Photos and narratives about each inductee cover three of four walls. The fourth allows for the installment to grow. There is also a central column with a video monitor that provides updates and announcements.

“The hope is that it excites and motivates people who aren’t currently volunteering involved in the community,” Hidalgo said.

To get to the exhibit, enter the doors across from Civic Plaza, take the escalator down to the bottom level, and walk through the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame.

Esparza Advertising Agency created and donated the design, “That Girl” Promotions built the display, and the City of Albuquerque and Mayor’s Office covered the costs.

While other locations were considered, the convention center won out due to its first-class renovations, its location in the heart of the city, and the fact that it sees heavy foot traffic from both locals and visitors.

Vietnam Memorial

S

itting on a ridge overlooking the Moreno Valley, where eagles, ravens and red-tailed hawks control the air space, is

the sculpted and tombstone-white Vietnam Veterans Memorial. This is a place where the sacrifices of war are remembered and soldiers who did not come home alive are honored.

A veterans’ cemetery is being planned for the site originally built

by Victor and Jeanne Westphall in honor of their son, David, who died with 15 other soldiers May 22, 1968, during the Battle of Con Thien, South Vietnam.

Despite the area’s beauty and the grandeur of the memorial, when veterans visit they want their photos taken in one special place – standing beside “670,” a Bell Helicopter UH1H. This is the aircraft that was the workhorse of Vietnam.

“It was like the Jeep in World War II,” says retired Sgt. 1st Class Joe Repichowski, an Army veteran whose

first meeting with a “Huey” was in 1967, at Fort Rucker, Ala. Repichowski, now 70, spent seven years of active duty working with the helicopters and another 29 in the National Guard.

“All in all, it was a good career,” Repichowski says. “I was a mechanic, I was a crew chief, a gunner and a supervisor of maintenance. They were very easy to work on, and they would hardly ever break down - really a dependable aircraft.”

According to the Vietnam Helicopters Museum website (www.vietnamehelicopters.org), these aircraft performed a variety of missions – inserting troops into battle positions and pulling them back out, providing “smoke” cover for the troops and providing the soldiers with supplies. The Hueys also greatly enhanced medical care for wounded soldiers, airlifting 90,000 patients. Typically, the helicopters delivered patients to medical care within an hour of being injured.

In all, 7,013 UH-1H helicopters flew in Vietnam and 3,305 were destroyed. A total of 1,074 Huey pilots and 1,103 crew members

were killed, according to Wikipedia.

The Huey at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is largely there because Repichowski and his longtime friend Bobby Barrow, now 74, decided that when the National Guard in Santa Fe was ready to retire the helicopter it would serve a larger purpose at the memorial near Angel Fire.

Barrow’s time in the Army was spent in Germany rather than Vietnam, but after the service, he hired on as a flight mechanic with the Air America Company. Barrow describes the company as a contractor that flew helicopters all over Vietnam, moving troops into positions, providing them supplies and pulling them out of the jungle.

The Central Intelligence Agency, Barrow says, was one of Air America’s customers, and because of that he also flew missions in Thailand and Laos.

“Our company did a little bit of everything,” Barrow says. “We flew everywhere the Army went.”

“This aircraft has been rebuilt a few times,” Barrow says. “It probably ended up with 11,000 hours. It has been used really a lot.”

It continues to be used heavily, he says. “Thousands and thousands of pictures are taken beside it. It really means a lot to the veterans; it inserted them and it pulled them out.”

After 670 went on display at the memorial, Barrow and Repichowski would go up and

clean it up before Memorial Day. This year it was repainted and restored by Aersale of Roswell, and it continues to boost the spirits of soldiers, many of whom owe their lives to a Huey and to the mechanics like Repichowski and Barrow who kept them flying.

Fall Into The Season

s we turn our attention to cozy fall meals, many comfort foods come to mind - a big bowl of stew, creamy casseroles and seasonal desserts. Of course, November also marks the beginning of pumpkin and butternut squash madness.

To get into the spirit, I turned to my beautiful goddaughter, Marisa Tran, who is always creating new and delicious recipes. She designed this Butternut Squash Stuffed Ravioli recipe about four years ago and says it’s her fall favorite. It incorporates both pumpkin and butternut squash, and it’s a perfect dish to keep you warm on a cold winter’s day.

Here is her recipe as well as one for a comforting stew and a hot spiked latte.

All are sure to satisfy when it’s chilly outside.

Marisa’s Butternut Squash Stuffed Ravioli with Pumpkin Cream Sauce Ingredients: • 1 package of lasagna noodles • 1 fresh butternut squash (cut in half, take out seeds, bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes to soften) • 2 Tablespoons olive oil • 1 Tablespoon butter • Salt & pepper (to taste) • 3 cloves garlic • 1/2 Tablespoon of shallots • 12-ounce container of ricotta • ¼ cup goat cheese • 1/8 cup parsley • 1 egg (to bind together) Ingredients for Pumpkin Cream Sauce: • 1 pint heavy cream • 1 can unsweetened pumpkin puree • 3/4 stick salted butter • 1/2 cup asiago cheese • 1/2 cup, plus 1/8 cup parmesan cheese • 1/2 cup Romano cheese • 1 Tablespoon chopped parsley • 1 clove chopped garlic • ½ cup milk

Directions for Pumpkin Cream Sauce: Mix all ingredients over low heat until melted but not boiling.

Directions: Boil lasagna noodles until malleable. Place the softened butternut squash in a food processor and mix with other ingredients, except for the parsley. When blended, fold in chopped parsley. Pulse into a paste for filling. Cut lasagna noodles into 2-inch squares. Stuff butternut squash mixture into the pasta shells.

Press down until it makes a little pocket.

Place onto a baking dish. Drizzle with a thin layer of extra virgin olive oil.

Pour cream sauce and pour over noodles. Sprinkle with parsley and remaining parmesan. Bake at 375 degrees until cooked, about 25-30 minutes.

Watch how to make it on Foodnetwork.com Ingredients: • 2 pounds lean stewing beef (such as top round), cut into 2-inch cubes • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper • 5 Tablespoons all-purpose flour • 3 Tablespoons olive oil • One 12-ounce bottle stout beer, such as Guinness • 10 small new potatoes, cut in half • 2 medium yellow onions, quartered • 4 large carrots, cut on the diagonal into 1-inch pieces • 1 celery stalk, cut into 1-inch pieces, plus 1/2 cup leaves, roughly chopped • 4 cups low-sodium beef broth • 3 Tablespoons unsalted butter, softened • 1 cup frozen peas • 3 scallions, sliced, optional Directions: Season the beef generously with salt and pepper. Sprinkle two tablespoons of the flour evenly over the meat. Heat the olive oil in a large heavy saucepan or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the beef in a single layer without crowding the pan (work in two batches if necessary) and cook, turning until browned on all sides. Remove the beef from the pan and reserve.

bits stuck to the bottom of the pan. Bring the liquid to a boil and cook until it is reduced by half; return the beef to the pot and add the potatoes, onions, carrots, celery stalk, broth and one cup water. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat to a very low simmer, cover and cook until the beef is very tender, 1 1/2 two 2 hours.

In a small bowl, mash the butter with the remaining three tablespoons flour until smooth. While whisking the liquid, drop small pieces of the butter paste into the stew, whisking until each piece dissolves.

Continue adding the butter paste until it is used up and completely dissolved into the stew. Add the peas and continue cooking until the stew is thickened and the peas are cooked, about 5 minutes. Taste and season with salt and pepper (about 1 1/2 teaspoons salt and 3/4 teaspoon pepper).

Ladle the stew into individual bowls and garnish with the chopped celery leaves and sliced scallions, if using.

Santa Fe Spotlight Fighting Hunger In Northern New Mexico

t’s a $25 ticket and a chance to put your money where their mouth is. The Food Depot in Santa Fe and Buffalo Thunder Casino are teaming up to fight hunger in Northern New Mexico on Nov. 18 during the annual Margarita Festival.

Every month the Food Depot provides 430,000 meals to folks experiencing hunger in and around Santa Fe. Although more than 40 varieties of margaritas will be served during the event, several Santa Fe-area restaurants also supply food to those who attend. A partial list includes The Red Sage, T Trail, Iguana Café, Golden Cantina and the Sopaipilla Factory, says Betsy

Donnelly, a marketing expert with Buffalo Thunder.

Donnelly says more than 3,000 margarita lovers are expected to attend, and the casino raises about $6,000 for the Food Depot.

Of course, participants must be 21 or older to enjoy one of the most popular cocktails in North America and definitely the most popular drink at the Buffalo Thunder Resort and Casino.

Your basic margarita is made with tequila, fresh-squeezed lime juice, an orange liqueur and Kosher salt, according to www.liquor.com. Every brand of tequila seems to provide its own margarita recipe online.

Jennifer West, community relations coordinator for The Food Depot, stays busy organizing fund-raisers for the charity. Upcoming in January is the Souper Bowl, in which 28 restaurants compete via their favorite, mouth-watering soups at the Santa Fe Convention Center. Tickets go on sale Dec. 1.

RECYCLE THIS The Santa Fe Recycle Art Festival is scheduled for Nov. 17-19 at the Santa Fe Convention Center, 201 W. Marcy St. Tickets cost $5 for admission from 5-9 p.m. Nov. 17, but children 12 and under get in free. There is no charge the other days, which run 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 18 and 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Nov. 19.

The festival’s annual Trash Fashion Show is set for 7 p.m.

Nov. 17. Tickets cost $15-$20, which includes the festival’s $5 general admission. About 100 artists will have booths at the event, selling all kinds of original artwork made from materials that had a previous life. School children also display their art.

About 1.8 million years ago our ancestors gathered around a flame for the collective use of resources to transform food from raw to cooked. Heat softens food that would otherwise have to be chewed for long periods of time and processed through an extravagant digestive system. Cooked foods offered the human brain more time and energy to grow in size, and decreased demands on the digestive system causing it to shrink in size.

Harvard Professor and author of the book Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human, Richard Wrangham writes that cooking was probably an instant favorite for early humans.

ovember is National Hospice Month as designated by former President Jimmy Carter in 1978.

Many individuals hear the word hospice and think death. I react differently to the word. For me, hospice means service and care for those individuals near the end of their life journey.

This definition is not too far from the etymology of hospice.

Linguistically, the word “hospice” derives from the Latin hospes, a word that served double duty in referring both to guests and hosts. Historians believe the first hospices originated in the 11th century, around 1065. Hospices were shelters for the travelers of the Middle Ages. They provided food and refreshment.

National Hospice Month The modern-day hospice movement began in the United Kingdom in 1963, when Dame Cicely Sanders established St. Christopher’s Hospice in a London suburb. Saunders’ creed was, “To cure sometimes, but to comfort always.”

In 1969, Dr. Elisabeth KublerRoss published a book based on more than 500 interviews with dying patients. In On Death and Dying she detailed the five stages through which many terminally ill patients progress. KublerRoss supported home care as an alternative to institutional treatment. This tenement argued that patients should have a choice and the ability to participate in the decisions that affect their destiny.

Hospice serves more than 1 million patients per year.

Approximately 98 percent of these patients received their hospice care at home. The average length of stay on hospice in 2015 was 69.5 days. The hospice benefit was designed for individuals whose terminal illness rendered a life expectancy of six

months or less. Half of hospice deaths occur at home.

During a recent World Hospice Day celebration in China, hundreds of paper cranes were made for hospice patients. In the Chinese culture, a paper crane represents best wishes.

This activity was meant to foster best wishes between hospice staff and the patients they cared for. Interaction between doctors and patients creates a good communication platform that is beneficial for patients to express themselves.

In our country, hospice is too often thought of very late in the course of an illness. When Kubler-Ross testified at the first national hearings, she said, “We live in a very particular deathdenying society. We isolate both the dying and the old, and it serves a purpose. They are reminders of our own mortality.

We should not institutionalize people. We can give families more help with home care and visiting nurses, giving the families and the patients the spiritual, emotional and financial

help in order to facilitate the final care at home.”

Recognizing that death is a natural part of life is key. Helping families cope with the dying process through compassionate care is a team process. Hospice accomplishes this with a nurse case manager, a chaplain, a social worker, a certified nursing assistant, volunteers and a physician.

We can thank Saunders for the end-of-life model of care referred to as “total pain.” This concept addresses the social, emotional and spiritual, as well as the physical needs of a patient.

Hospice and palliative care is now a fully recognized medical subspecialty. Physicians can become board certified and obtain fellowship training after residency. Nurses and social workers can also receive specialized hospice training.

Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) is looking for volunteers age 55 and older who are interested in making a difference in a child’s life.

Foster Grandparent volunteers must be willing to serve an average of 20 hours per week and must be able to pass a background check, physical, and tuberculosis test. Foster Grandparent volunteers serve one-on-one with children, working with them to build their social and emotional development as well as help improve their literacy skills.

I

started in the pest industry in Florida in1972. At that time, exterminators would drive cars, keeping all the chemicals on the front seat next to us. They were toxic products, such as DDT, chlordane, heptachlor, malathion and many others.

When somebody called an exterminator for any pest, we went to the residence, asked the homeowner to empty their kitchen cabinets, and then we sprayed the cabinets with chlordane. Then we fogged the kitchen with an oil-based pyrethrum.

We sprayed all the baseboards with malathion. We used malathion because it smelled bad, and we didn’t want the customer to think we were spraying water. Then we dusted the attic with DDT dust, and finally we put heptachlor granules all around the house.

I have no idea how many people we made sick or killed doing what we did.

Spray And Pray, Not The Best Way I do know I saw a lot of pest technicians develop cancer and other sicknesses early in life, undoubtedly because of their exposure to pesticides.

One time I got a call from a butcher shop in Miami. He had mice. So we went in the shop while it was open and dusted the whole store with DDT. DDT got into everything and even on the customers. The owner was happy, and he paid the bill of $20.

I used to crawl under houses and power spray the whole area with chlordane for termite control. I never even wore a mask, as safety equipment wasn’t required in those days. All of this was typical pest control at the time.

I left Florida and moved to Houston in 1975. The industry operated the same there. We practiced mosquito control in Houston. We often drove down the streets at night, fogged the place with malathion.

One time we got a call from the Houston Astrodome about mosquitoes inside. The team had a game scheduled that night. We went out and sprayed the whole interior of the astrodome with malathion to kill the mosquitoes. We got a call a few days later about people coughing and not feeling well; they wanted to know if it was the pesticide.

Our manager told them it couldn’t be because malathion only affects bugs.

He said it must have been pollen or something.

It was about this time that I was starting to get a little concerned about the industry I was in. I didn’t want to leave because pests can be a problem, but there had to be better ways to deal with them. My wife, Sandi, and I moved to Albuquerque in 1978. I went to work for another pest control company, and another, and another, but they all had the same mindset - spray and pray: Spray pesticides and pray you kill something. I wanted to get away from that.

I finally got away from the pest companies and went to work for the University of New Mexico as its integrated pest management technician in 1995. All I did was non-toxic pest management and the university loved it.

The fact is that pesticides have been misused for many years, and in many cases, they still are. If a company is just spraying the baseboards in a house, it is a gimmick, as is just spraying around the outside. Who cares how many praying mantids, other insects or birds they kill. Nobody will notice is their

theory. Mosquito spraying is still very common and just as dangerous and just as useless as it has always been, and they use pesticides now that are more toxic than malathion.

Some companies have gotten away from generic pest spraying and have adopted safer methods. Unfortunately, many companies are still in that spray and pray mindset.

We have to work with government agencies to get them to quit using dangerous methods, and we have got to stop using pest control companies that practice spray and pray methods in and around our homes. Social Security Options For Divorced Spouses

ear Savvy Senior, As a divorced woman, am I entitled to my ex-husband’s Social Security benefits? I was married for 14 years and would like to know how this works.

Happily Divorced Dear Divorced, Yes, you may very well be eligible for divorced spouses Social Security benefits if you meet certain criteria.

Here’s how it works.

A divorced spouse can collect a Social Security retirement benefit on the earnings record of their exhusband (or ex-wife) if you are at least age 62, were married for at least 10 years, are unmarried, and are not eligible for a higher benefit based on your own earnings record.

In order to collect, your former spouse must also be at least 62 and eligible for Social Security benefits.

But, he doesn’t have to be receiving them in order for you to collect divorced spouse’s benefits, as long as you’ve been divorced for at least two years. in

Even if your ex is remarried, it won’t affect your right to divorcee benefits, nor will it affect your ex’s retirement benefits or his current spouse’s benefits.

Benefit Amount A divorced spouse can receive up to 50 percent of their ex’s full Social Security benefit, or less if they take benefits before their full retirement age – which is 66 if you were born between 1943 and 1954. To find out your full retirement age and see how much your benefits will be reduced by taking them early see SSA.gov/ planners/retire/retirechart.html.

Keep in mind though, that if you qualify for benefits based on your own work history, you’ll receive the larger of the two benefits. You cannot receive benefits on both your record, and your ex’s work record too.

To find out how much your retirement benefits will be, see your Social Security statement at SSA.gov/ myaccount. And to get an estimate of your ex’s benefits, call Social Security at 800-772-1213. You’ll need his Social Security Number to get it.

Divorced Survivor You also need to know that if

your ex-spouse dies, and you were married for 10 or more years, you become eligible for divorced survivor benefits, which is worth up to 100 percent of what your exspouse was due.

Survivor’s benefits are available to divorced spouses as early as age 60 (50 if you’re disabled). But, if you remarry before 60 you become ineligible unless the marriage ends.

Remarrying after age 60 will not affect your eligibility.

Also note that if you are receiving divorced spouses benefits when you ex-spouse dies, you will automatically be switched over to the higher paying survivor benefit.

Switching Strategies Being divorced also offers a switching strategy that can help boost your benefits if you were born on or before Jan. 1, 1954. Here’s how it works. If you worked and are eligible for benefits on your own earnings record, you could file a “restricted application” with Social Security at age 66 to collect a divorced spousal benefit, which is half of what your ex gets. Then, once you reach 70, you stop receiving the ex-spousal benefit and switch to

your own benefit, which will be 32 percent higher than it would have been at your full retirement age.

Unfortunately, as a result of the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015, this option is not available if your birthday is Jan. 2, 1954 or later.

Divorced widows (and widowers) also have switching options regardless of your birthday. If, for example, you are currently collecting Social Security retirement benefits on your own record, and your ex-spouse dies, you can switch to survivor’s benefits if the payment is larger. Or, if you’re collecting survivor’s benefits, you can switch to your own retirement benefits – between 62 and 70 – if it offers a larger payment.
