ovember is National Diabetes Awareness month in the United States. This is a time for communities to come together to focus on increasing education about diabetes and prediabetes, encouraging diabetesrelated screenings to close care gaps, and collaborating on ways communities can come together to combat diabetes. Recent data shows that 34.2 million people in the U.S. have diabetes — that’s 10.5 percent of the entire population — and it’s predicted to increase. With diabetes being so common, it’s important to discuss preventing diabetes-related complications. This article will be the first of two focusing on diabetes-related complications.

What are diabetes-related complications?

Diabetes increases the risk for many serious health problems.

The long-term complications of diabetes are related in part to damage caused by high blood glucose levels. The complications include cardiovascular disease, blindness, chronic kidney disease (requiring dialysis), nerve damage (also called neuropathy), and foot ulcers that can result in amputations.

In general, people with blood glucose levels closer to normal have fewer complications than those with higher levels. Diabetes control is monitored and measured by the hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) test. The HbA1c test is a blood test that provides information about a person’s average blood glucose levels over the past three months. The A1c test measures the attachment of glucose to hemoglobin, which is the protein in the red blood cells that carries oxygen. The more glucose in your blood, the more hemoglobin A1c is formed. By measuring the percentage of A1c in the blood, you get an overview of your average blood glucose control for the past few months. The percent target is usually a HbA1c result of 7 percent or less, but there can be unique circumstances when the

target may be set higher. Please discuss what your HbA1c target should be with your health care provider. The HbA1c test should be done at least twice a year or more often if your diabetes is not controlled.

How does diabetes affect my vision?

There are several eye problems related to diabetes. The most common is called diabetic retinopathy. In diabetic retinopathy, the small blood vessels in the lining at the back of the eyeball grow abnormally and leak, leading to vision loss and eventually blindness if not treated.

Diabetes is the leading cause of vision loss in people 18-64 years old. Damage to the retina can occur before there are any vision changes. An annual eye exam can prevent 95 percent of vision loss caused by diabetes. The eye exam is usually performed by an eye care provider, such as an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

Your primary care provider (PCP) can also use a retinal camera to take pictures of the back of your eyeballs and send images to an eye care provider. The camera makes it convenient because it can be done during your regular diabetes visit.

Please ask your PCP if they have a retinal camera.

How does diabetes increase my risk for heart disease?

Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in people living with diabetes. (continued on Page 4)

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease includes coronary heart disease (e.g., heart attacks), cerebrovascular disease (e.g., strokes) and peripheral vascular disease (e.g., poor blood circulation in the arteries of the legs). Dyslipidemia, also known as high cholesterol and triglycerides, commonly coexists with diabetes and is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Fatty deposits and calcium build up in the walls of the arteries and block the blood flow to your body organs, resulting in lack of oxygen and serious consequences.

What is a statin drug and what do people with diabetes need to know about it?

There is evidence that lowering the levels of lipids (cholesterol and triglycerides) can help decrease cardiovascular complications in people with diabetes. It is important to know your lipid numbers. In addition to lifestyle management, it is recommended

that people with diabetes speak to their health care provider about statin drug therapy. Statins are a class of medications used to lower cholesterol levels. It is recommended that people with diabetes aged 40-75 years old without cardiovascular disease use moderate intensity statin therapy to prevent cardiovascular complications. In people with diabetes at higher risk for cardiovascular disease (i.e., individuals with multiple risk factors or those aged 50-75 years), it is reasonable to consider high intensity statin therapy. People with diabetes and cardiovascular disease should be on high intensity statin therapy. There are two types of cholesterol: HDL and LDL. The general target LDL is less than 130 mg/dL; however, there are unique circumstances where the target may be set lower. The data shows that fewer than 60 percent of people with diabetes are taking a statin. Please speak to your health care provider about which statin therapy is appropriate for your

situation and what target to aim for. Lipids are usually measured at least once a year if you are on a statin drug, more often if the statin dose is being adjusted.

What else can I do?

As always, living a healthy lifestyle is a top priority. That includes getting enough exercise, getting the right amount of sleep, eating a healthy diet, not smoking, and engaging with your health care provider to close your care gaps and improve your health outcomes.

Some Magma To Watch Out For

ast month in this space we discussed the volcanoes on Albuquerque’s West Mesa, assuring readers that the consensus among geologists is that they are extinct and won’t erupt again. That’s not the case, however, with a couple of other potentially hazardous volcanic areas in our state. So once again we depart from our usual local history topics to delve into the equally fascinating realm of geoscience.

Deep in the earth beneath the chile fields of Lemitar, a farming community a few miles north of Socorro, sits hot molten rock. The small town is almost directly over the center of the Socorro magma body, a flattened, kidney-shaped intrusion of melted rock, or magma, the size of Rhode Island and about four times hotter than a pizza oven.

Geologists say it’s the second largest active magma body on the planet, and it’s still growing. If

you’re wondering whether it could erupt someday, the answer is a definite yes.

The Socorro magma body was discovered in the early 1960s by seismologists at New Mexico Tech in Socorro. They noticed that seismic waves generated by earthquakes in the area behaved in a way that suggested they were being reflected by a layer of liquid about 12 miles down. The only liquid that can exist at that depth is magma. Further testing confirmed their suspicions and enabled them to map the extent of the magma intrusion.

No one has yet devised a way to predict exactly when a volcanic event will occur. The Socorro magma body could erupt within our lifetime, or thousands of years from now, or possibly never. It is being closely monitored both by land-based instruments and by satellite imagery, so we likely (continued on next page)

would have ample warning of any unusual activity in time to evacuate endangered communities.

New Mexico’s other potential volcanic hazard is the Valles Caldera in the Jemez Mountains. If you’ve ever visited this lovely scenic area, which is managed by the U.S. National Park Service, you might not suspect that it could pose any danger. But the Valles is a sleeping tiger. Three to nine miles below the surface lies a magma chamber that has been the source of two major explosive eruptions in the recent geologic past. The first occurred about 1.6 million years ago, the second about 350,000 years later, at 1.25 million years ago. Either would qualify as a “supervolcano,” more powerful than any that have been seen by human eyes. The eruption that blew the top off Mount St. Helens in 1980 was only about 1/300 the size of the second Valles eruption, in terms of volume. The ash and dust ejected by the two eruptions formed the Bandelier tuff, exposed in the spectacular

cliffs of the Pajarito Plateau near Los Alamos.

Here again, no one can predict the timing or the magnitude of any future eruption, but as with the Socorro magma body, geoscientists are monitoring the area for any signs of renewed activity. An event on anything close to the scale of past eruptions there would be a disaster of unprecedented proportions.

The Valles Caldera is a textbook example of a young caldera that has not yet been significantly eroded, and has been studied by scientists from around the world. Much of what we now understand about eruptions of this type was learned here. To learn more about it, read Valles Caldera: A Geologic History, by Fraser Goff, published by UNM Press in 2009.

Past volcanism has created much of the rugged and beautiful topography of northern and western New Mexico and will likely continue to do so. It’s only a matter of time.

How To Protect Yourself From Scammers That Target Seniors

A

ccording to the United States Senate Special Committee on Aging, seniors lose an estimated 2.9 billion dollars a year to con artists perpetrating scams. The purpose of these scams is generally to elicit money or information for financial gain.

Seniors are an at-risk group when it comes to financial exploitation because con artists see them as more vulnerable. Older adults are often more trusting, desire interaction because of isolation, have more savings or property, and are less aware of current scams.

It’s impossible to know every potential scam out there. So the most effective way to protect yourself from being victimized is to be aware of methods scammers employ. The following are some common scams targeting seniors and how to protect yourself.

Internet Scams The pace of technological innovation is multiplying, bringing with it new ways of scamming people out of their hard-earned money. Because seniors weren’t born and raised around modern technology, they’re open to a higher possibility of being scammed online.

Generally, internet scams work by using email, popups, or fake websites to elicit money or information, such as login credentials, from the victim. For example, an email may appear to be from a legitimate source and ask you to respond with sensitive information or open a link directly from the text. But scammers have ways of making an email or website look legitimate to trick victims into entering sensitive information or passwords.

Pop up ads can also be used to trick someone into thinking they have a computer virus. When you

click the ad, you may get tricked into paying for fake antivirus software. Alternatively, you may get connected to a fake tech or computer expert who requests sensitive information to stop the purported virus.

How to Protect Yourself • When you receive an email requesting personal information, check the email address and research it to see if it’s legitimate.

• Don’t respond directly to an email with sensitive information, even if it appears to be from a legitimate source. If you believe it may be a legitimate request from a known source, open a new email, and input an email address you know is legitimate. You can find this by checking your address book or the company’s website.

• Don’t click links directly from an email or enter your login details or other information on the page that opens. If it’s from your bank or another familiar company, open a

separate web page and go directly to the site yourself.

• Use pop up blockers and legitimate antivirus software when you’re on the internet or computer, and don’t click on popups.

• Check with a younger, technologically savvy family member or friend before engaging in something online that seems suspicious.

Telemarketing Scams Seniors are often more comfortable and familiar with phone conversations. But scammers have plenty of tricks up their sleeves. Phone scams generally focus on offering victims what seems to be a great opportunity or impersonating an official to get sensitive information.

A common telemarketing scam is when someone calls pretending to be from the IRS. The caller informs (continued on next page)

the victim they owe taxes and must pay immediately. Some scammers even threaten there’s a warrant out for the victim’s arrest, and the only way to avoid it is to pay up, often by wire transfer or in the form of a gift card. Some callers cite obscure taxes that don’t exist to alarm the victim.

Scammers also try to sell fake products or services over the phone. They use tactics like offering free trials that require your credit card information or limited time offers to pressure you into a quick decision.

How to Protect Yourself • Know that most government agencies and legitimate businesses like banks won’t ask for sensitive information over the phone.

• To verify who’s calling, hang up and call back the phone number that called you. If it seems legitimate, take an extra precaution.

Find the contact number for the company or group online, then call it to ask if it was a valid communication.

• Hang up or otherwise remove yourself from the situation. Con artists use many tactics to keep you on the phone or engaged. They often impart a sense of urgency or alarm to confuse their targets and increase the likelihood their target will fall for the scam.

• If you don’t recognize a phone number, let it go to voicemail.

Scammers may not leave a voicemail. If they do, you can search the number online to see if others have reported it.

• Be aware that caller IDs and numbers displayed on your phone aren’t always accurate. Scammers

can manipulate what shows up on your screen when you receive a call.

Medicare or Health Insurance Scams Since all US citizens over 65 qualify for Medicare, scammers have an easier time taking advantage of this system. Con artists will pose as an official representative from Medicare to attain the victim’s personal information. Then they use it to bill for services falsely.

Funeral Scams Widows or widowers are at risk from fraudsters that prey on their vulnerable emotional state.

One common scam is for a person to show up during or soon after a funeral. The con artist claims the deceased person had a debt that must be settled to avoid further action.

How to Protect Yourself Don’t give out any information to a Medicare representative who contacts you. If you feel it may be legitimate, they should have no problem with you calling them back. Return the communication using an email or phone number that you know is legitimate.

Romantic Scams Many older adults are without partners, and scammers try to take advantage of their loneliness.

Con artists use dating sites or social media to form an emotional connection and build trust with the target. Once established, con artists use the relationship to extract money from their victim for an ‘emergency’ or ‘travel expenses’ to come to visit.

How to Protect Yourself • Don’t send money to anyone you haven’t met and don’t know very well in-person.

• Be wary of entering a relationship with someone online or by phone, especially if it seems too good to be true.

• Don’t hide any romantic relationships. Be open with friends

How to Protect Yourself • Make sure you, your partner, and other family members communicate and know each other’s financial situations and debts, so there are no surprises.

• If someone claims there’s a debt that’s owed, ask for proof.

• Research funeral costs and procedures. Also, ask questions about other options, especially if you feel you’re being upsold.

• Arrange the preferred details for your partner or family members’ funerals ahead of time when you’re less vulnerable and have time and opportunity to compare places and options.

Surprise Winnings Scams Some fraudsters use compelling circumstances like winning a lottery or free vacation to lure potential victims. These scams are appealing because it feels good to win something. You’ll receive a call or notification that you’ve won a prize. To secure the award (that will never come), you need to pay a comparatively small amount of money or provide bank or identification information.

How to Protect Yourself • Be wary of an unusually great deal. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

• If you didn’t enter a contest or haven’t heard of the opportunity you’ve allegedly lucked into, it’s likely a scam.

• Don’t give any money or information to someone requesting it to secure your prize.

General tips on dealing with a potential scam: • Be aware when someone is using emotional appeal or emphasizing time sensitivity or another type of urgency. Giving you vague or ambiguous information or trying to get you to supply information is also a warning sign. These are common tactics to manipulate people into falling for a scam.

• Don’t be afraid to ask questions, for confirmation, or to talk to a superior. Be skeptical, and if you’re not satisfied, don’t give out any information.

• Talk to other friends or family members to see if they have any knowledge about what the person has asked of you and whether it’s above board before you give out any information.

• Stay aware of popular schemes by following the news and resources such as the US Senate Special Committee on Aging’s Fraud Book.

If you believe you’ve been scammed, or have experienced an attempt, call the US Senate Special Committee on Aging’s Fraud Hotline at 1-855-303-9470 to report it and get advice. Scams, especially against the elderly population, often go unreported. This makes it more difficult to stop those perpetrating the crimes.

Western Music Rules The Day (And Night) Once Again!!

otal immersion in The West!! The inspiring music and art, the showy Cowboy clothing styles, the sprawling tradition! Locally since 2005 crowds of people have enjoyed participating in a unique event that makes the experience possible. It’s the International Western Music Association’s annual Convention, which runs this year from Wednesday night November 9th through Sunday morning November 14th, and once again the Hotel Albuquerque in Old Town will host this popular Cowboy extravaganza.

“That word ‘convention’ might be off-putting or lead some people into believing this isn’t a public show,” admits Rick Huff, a former IWMA officer and the nation’s principal reviewer of contemporary Western Music and Cowboy Poetry releases. “If people think it’s just a business meeting for Association members, they’re missing out on something incredible!!”

As always, the IWMA will be showcasing top Western musicians and Cowboy Poets entertaining on daytime and nighttime concert stages, a huge Western Music mercantile so enthusiasts can engage in fleshing out their listening libraries, a Western clothing consignment store, vendors, after-hours jam sessions and much more.

IWMA’s quarterly magazine The Western Way reads as follows: “Western Music is most often acoustic in its core instrumentation. Its lyrics are typically about the lives, loves, lore, locales, legends and legacy of the Old and New West, its peoples or Cowboying worldwide!” And that obviously covers plenty of territory.

“A general misconception about Western Music is that it’s Country,” Huff explains. “It’s definitely not the loud, rockish Pop that Country has become. Western is largely acoustic and generally pretty mellow, yet still exciting to hear. Folks really need to come experience it for themselves to fully understand the appeal. And they will!! It’s so good to be returning for this big event after sitting out 2020!”

ach of us has a history and our own unique story. From time to time, photographic memories dance around in our heads, and you may want to preserve these unforgettable moments in writing, whether informally in a journal or for public consumption in a memoir.

A memoir is a true story you tell about specific events, experiences, or moments in your life.

Writing one can be a daunting and emotional experience. It can also be exciting, fulfilling, and rewarding.

You can write about the whole span of your life or one specific event.

Perhaps you want to write a book that might help or inspire others outside your circle of family and friends. Or, you may want to write down your experiences to heal your soul or come to terms with a difficult emotional past. You may simply want to leave a lasting record that celebrates your life and that younger relatives will enjoy reading. Tell them how you lived, reveal choices you struggled making, and narrate special experiences. Show them how you faced joys and challenges. Share how you loved, cried, struggled, and survived it all.

• Make a list of important dates and events in your life • Make a list of your life experiences • Jog your memory with photos and mementos • Gather pertinent information • Research as many details as you possibly can • Search old newspaper stories • Recall historical events • Determine your goals • Write what inspires you • Decide if you want to write about one particular time or event, or about your entire life • Prepare to tell the truth • Think of your life in terms of all five senses: touch, taste, sound, smell, and sight • Read several memoirs and identify what it is you like about them • Don’t let the negative opinions of others deter you • Write every day

There are eight essential B vitamins required from food or supplementation. These eight (see below for a list) cannot be made in sufficient quantities by the body alone. B vitamins support everything from DNA to skin. They are fundamental in red blood cell development, metabolic processes that convert food to energy, and nourishing the activities of the nervous (including the brain) and cardiovascular systems. Perhaps now is the time to consider a B-complex supplement for immunity, nervous system, and overall health support.

The best food sources of B vitamins are animal products (meat and eggs). While

many vegetables carry a good supply of B vitamins, they also contain oxalates that can prevent B vitamins from being absorbed.

Cooking helps make B vitamins more available in vegetables.

However, B vitamins are heatsensitive, and cooking over 40 degrees Celsius can make them unavailable. Olive oil and lemon tossed generously with raw greens may help increase absorption, but a supplemental vitamin B complex is wise especially for vegetarians. Vitamin B is watersoluble, which means that it is not stored in the body requiring routine consumption.

Aging plays a role in our need for supplemental vitamins due to declining gastrointestinal health, affecting nutrient absorption.

Thirty percent of people experience issues affecting the integrity of the stomach lining necessary for secreting glycoproteins that absorb dietary vitamin B12. People who take metformin, or medications to alter stomach acids, or individuals with celiac or Crohn’s disease, have good reason to get their B12 levels tested due to absorption disruptions.

B12 deficiency is common in individuals over 50, and ignoring it can lead to significant mental health issues, including depression, memory loss, and biological control, including incontinence.

Symptoms of vitamin B depletion may include anemia, numbness or tingling in limbs, balance issues, reduced cognitive strength, weakness, and fatigue.

A well-rounded B complex supplement is a good idea for most people. However, synthetic vitamin B supplements are often problematic. About 50 percent of people have MTHFR genetic mutations that cannot convert synthetic vitamins to useable forms.

Look closely for supplement labels that list “non-synthetic” and “foodderived” sources for B vitamins and necessary “co-factors” for best absorption. High quality sublingual B vitamins or even B12 injections can be total game changers for increased energy and mental health.

In the case of a useful B-complex, invest wisely and take it routinely.

Consider animal meats, eggs, avocado, broccoli, almonds, pistachios, beets, asparagus, pinto beans, and navy beans to boost dietary B vitamins. Nutritional

yeast fortified with non-synthetic B vitamins has a cheesy umami-type flavor that goes well with savory dishes. Try sprinkling a non-GMO nutritional yeast onto your soups, enchiladas, salads, or as a popcorn topping. Sneak this B vitamin-rich yeast into your holiday meal this fall and notice the mood lift in the room.

ovember is National COPD Awareness month.

COPD stands for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and is used to describe two lung conditions: chronic bronchitis and emphysema. These diseases are the fourth leading cause of death in the United States and are strongly associated with smoking and with long-term second-hand exposure to smoke. Asthma is not the same as COPD, as asthma is not usually caused by smoke inhalation.

Our lungs are a pair of pinkishgray organs that have a spongy texture. Air enters them when

we inhale, and oxygen from the air moves from our lungs to our blood. As we exhale, carbon dioxide moves from our blood to the lungs and is excreted. As we breathe, the lungs expand and contract with the assistance of the diaphragm and the chest wall muscles.

Chronic bronchitis and emphysema are inflammatory lung conditions that cause obstruction to airflow. Bronchitis affects the linings of the large airways, while emphysema refers to damage done to the alveoli, the small air passages within the lungs. It’s typically caused by long-term exposure to irritating gases or particulate matter, most often from cigarette smoke.

Symptoms include breathing difficulty, cough, mucus (sputum) production, and wheezing. Other

symptoms of COPD include shortness of breath, especially during physical activities, chest tightness, frequent respiratory infections, and a chronic cough that may produce mucus that can be clear, white, yellow, or green.

In the later stages of COPD, one may experience lack of energy, unintentional weight loss, and even leg swelling. This is a progressive disease that worsens over time as long as the exposure persists. The symptoms listed above can be managed with oral and inhaled medications.

Supplemental oxygen may be helpful as well.
