ince its founding in 1988, the International Western Music Association (IWMA) has

worked to preserve, encourage, create and promote the endemic American Western Music genre along with Cowboy Poetry. And since 2005, the second week in each November has seen the IWMA convene its worldwide membership and its fans in Albuquerque.

November 13th through the 17th the organization returns to the Hotel Albuquerque in Old Town to present concerts, music jams, workshops and fellowship to its members and the public at large. The 4 1/2 days will feature nearly 100 top-ranked Western Music & Poetry acts.

Another feature of the annual Albuquerque extravaganza is the presentation of the Western Music & poetry Awards, the genre’s GRAMMYS. “The nonprofit IWMA is always looking for opportunities to educate and help the public and budding performers become involved with our music,” adds Mary Ryland of the IWMA’s New Mexico Chapter.

“For example the third annual Youth Camp was held in June in Weatherford, Texas. We have astonishing young talent coming up, and their performance abilities will be on display in Albuquerque!”

Rick Huff adds “people like to come in their best Western outfits or buy them here! And there’s no shortage of native jewelry, art and other Western items people can take home with them along with the music! Simply put, there’s nothing quite like the big IWMA shindig!!”

The Great Panty Raid Caper

N

onsensical fads have been a part of American youth culture for a long time.

Swallowing laundry detergent pods seems to be in vogue right now. Earlier generations amused themselves by swallowing live goldfish, or by stuffing themselves into telephone booths (remember telephone booths?), or by “streaking.”

In the early 1950s, the fad that swept college campuses across the country was the “panty raid.” Male students would swarm through the women’s dormitories seizing bras, panties and other items from their lingerie drawers as trophies. Today that would surely be considered a form of sexual harassment, but back then most students, including the girls, apparently thought it was great risqué fun and a harmless way to shock the sensibilities of their elders, as young people always seem to want to do.

The University of New Mexico was not immune from this silliness, but the antics became a little ugly on the night of May 22, 1952, when an attempted panty raid on the campus turned into a near riot. Perhaps it was spring fever or the drudgery of studying for final exams that made

the scholars so frisky and in need of excitement.

According to contemporary newspaper accounts, shortly before midnight a raiding party estimated at between 300 and 500 male students advanced on Hokona-Marron Hall and Bandelier Hall, both women’s dorms at that time. Someone called the police, who turned out in force.

City, county and state officers, and even a military police unit, converged on the campus and faced off with the panty raiders, while some of the girls heckled the cops “in strong language” from their dorm room windows.

“Why don’t you get the militia out, you damn dogs?” one of them reportedly yelled.

In the confrontation that ensued, rocks and firecrackers were hurled at the cops, injuring six of them.

One officer responded by firing tear gas from his “gas billy” into the crowd. Several of the rock throwers were taken into custody and tossed into police cars. These reportedly included the vice president of the freshman class and a popular football player. The other students angrily demanded their release. The standoff continued for about an hour and 20 minutes. Meanwhile, one enterprising individual strolled through

the crowd selling sandwiches.

City Commission Chairman Clyde Tingley, never one to shy away from any opportunity to appear in public, also arrived on the scene. “I think the boys are having a lot of fun and I think the girls are enjoying it too,” Tingley told a reporter.

Finally, Dean of Student Affairs Sherman Smith brokered a peace deal with Albuquerque Police Chief Paul Shaver. If the students would agree to call the whole thing off and go back to their own dorms, the cops would release their prisoners and no charges would be filed. Student leaders agreed, although some of the girls expressed disappointment at the settlement. “Chickens!” one co-ed reportedly yelled at the boys.

“Aw, shut up,” a retreating male student yelled back.

In an editorial two days later, the Albuquerque Journal called the incident “nauseating” and “disgusting,” and fulminated against both

university administrators and the police for their “weak-kneed” response. “The rowdies should have been jailed,” wrote the newspaper, adding that the authorities should “crack down hard on this sort of lawlessness” if it happened again.

In response, UNM President Tom Popejoy issued a public statement scolding the participants, but they apparently suffered no further consequences.

Within a few years the panty raid craze had run its course. In comparison to the far more serious violence that was to convulse university campuses a couple of decades later, the mostly-forgotten panty raid “riot” of ’52 seems tame indeed.

What type of dental care do I need to think about?

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends at least twice yearly dental checkups for most people. If you have gum or tooth disease, your dentist may recommend more frequent care.

What can I do to decrease my risk of losing teeth?

What causes people to lose their teeth?

Gum disease, smoking, poor dental hygiene and lack of regular dental care can all contribute to tooth loss as people age. Medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and rheumatoid arthritis are all risk factors.

Practicing good oral hygiene habits is very important for dental health and even more so as we get older. Brush your teeth at least twice daily with a soft bristle brush. Some people find electric toothbrushes helpful. Clean between your teeth at least once a day with floss or another flossing tool. Many people find that water-based cleaning tools are very useful in cleaning their teeth and gums. If you use tobacco in any form, stopping will decrease your risk of losing teeth. Tobacco increases your risk for gum disease, and healthy gums are necessary for healthy teeth.

New Mexico Senior Olympics’ ongoing mission is to promote health and wellness to adults 50 and over through education, fitness and sport. NMSO recently celebrated forty years and has always advocated this mission with yearround programing to promote active lifestyle for older adults statewide.

The recent partnership NMSO had with the City of Albuquerque to conduct the historical National Senior Games this summer resulted in 14,000 athletes attending including 1,545 of our very own New Mexico athletes.

NMSO Board of Directors announced that the 2020 Annual Summer Games will be held in Las Cruces in mid-June for 25 individual sports and will be the qualifier for the next National Senior Games planned for Florida in 2021. Las Cruces has hosted the Games for many years, as recent as 2012. In collaboration with New Mexico Department of Health Injury Prevention, NMSO supports Fall Prevention activities in many communities with Tai-Chi, and Matter of Balance as evidence based falls prevention programs. Class participants and instructors receive training material. The Matter of Balance program is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. NMSO manages the Fall Prevention data entry activity for the classes.

Another program, Enhance Fitness group exercise, is licensed and sponsored by NMSO at 15 sites throughout the state with a certified fitness instructor working with senior adults on strength training, flexibility and cardio conditioning. Over four hundred participants attend Enhance Fitness classes three times per week for one hour. Classes are held at Senior Centers from Las Cruces, Ruidoso, Zuni, Santa Fe, Clovis, Grants, Los Lunas, Placitas, Rio Rancho, Albuquerque and Roswell.

Enhance Fitness is an evidence based program and is supported in part by Non Metro Area Agency on Aging and Aging and Long Term Services. Classes are free to seniors in most areas. NMSO Executive Director recently reported to the board of directors “We are excited to see a good number of participants (404) attending regularly and benefiting from the class. Seniors are encouraged to talk to elected leaders for additional state funding to add more classes in rural communities.”

Senior Olympics team tournaments for Volleyball, Softball and Basketball are still another opportunity for seniors 50+ to be active. Volleyball and Softball tournaments recently drew 40 teams, men and women, 50+, 55+, 60+, 65+, and 70+. Teams were from out of state and in-state. The upcoming Senior Olympics Tournament is 3 on 3 Basketball on November 2-3rd to be held at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center in Santa Fe located at 3221 Rodeo Road. There are 22 Teams registered to play. Teams play half court with 15 minute halves for age groups 50-74. Spectators are welcomed – free admission.

Winter Blues May Be Clinical Seasonal Condition

A

s daylight hours shorten, many of us complain about driving home from work in darkness at 5:30 p.m., feeling like it’s time for bed earlier than usual or just generally missing the long sunny days of summer. For some people, however, the shorter days bring about darker moods, negative thoughts and feelings, bothersome physical symptoms and behavioral changes. These individuals may be suffering from a type of cyclical depression called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Though treatable, it may be misdiagnosed or undiagnosed for long periods, especially in New Mexico, because its symptoms can mimic other conditions and because its occurrence is rare here.

I was diagnosed with SAD about eight years ago at the age of 40 by a psychiatrist in Albuquerque - but only after years of tests ordered by doctors trying to track down a medical cause for my vague physical symptoms. Determining

whether you, a son or daughter, or grandchild has SAD does not have to be that difficult – if you know what signs to look for, and when.

It is estimated that about 5 percent of the U.S. population, or 10 million people, have SAD, with 10 percent to 20 percent suffering from mild, or ‘subsyndromal,’ cases. There is no data for how many people are afflicted in New Mexico, but SAD’s prevalence tends to be greater in areas further from the equator, that do not get much sunlight during winter. It is four times more common in women than in men and usually affects people in their 20s-40s.

“SAD is specific to one’s environment and especially to how much outdoor light people get,” said Janis L. Anderson, an assistant professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School and Brigham & Women’s Hospital who specializes in mood disorders such as SAD. Anderson has also taught as a visiting professor on and off for 20 years in the University of New Mexico’s Psychology Department.

“Symptoms people get tend to start appearing around this time of year as days become shorter than the night. One of the hallmark difficulties is you find yourself increasingly unable to get up at your normal hour and feel energetic,” she said.

Other common symptoms include a change in appetite, especially a craving for carbohydrates/sweets; weight gain; a heavy feeling in the arms or legs; slowed movements and speech; a drop in energy level; fatigue; a tendency to oversleep; difficulty concentrating; irritability; a loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed; and avoidance of social situations—not wanting to go out, according to the American Psychiatric Association. Symptoms tend to begin in September and last about five months, peaking in January and February.

Individuals who may be at greater risk for SAD are those who have a low Vitamin D level, a personal or family history of depression/anxiety, or a personal or family history of substance abuse.

“It puts a person in the ballpark to be more vulnerable (to SAD), but we don’t know for sure what it is that is the mechanism for this within the nervous system,” Anderson said. “The single most telling thing is a person’s history because ultimately it is a form of depression, but No. 2, it’s a pattern that specifically applies to the time of year that’s related to the length of the day. So, if every November you’re depressed, and every March, you’re OK, that is the signature.”

Older people who are inactive, tend to stay indoors and don’t receive much sunlight in winter may also be more prone to SAD. People who get more light,

especially in the morning hours, may not develop symptoms to the same degree, Anderson said.

In fact, light therapy has been the first line of treatment for SAD sufferers since the 1980s.

It changed my life once I got diagnosed. Light therapy boxes that emit 10,000 lux of cool white bright fluorescent light and filter out harmful ultraviolet rays are available online. To be effective, they usually require the person to sit within one to three feet of them for 20 minutes to an hour daily, first thing in the morning.

Improvement may be felt within a few days to two weeks.

But Anderson cautions that not all lights are equal, people respond differently to time spent in front of the light, and they can have side effects. “It’s important for people to have equipment that’s safe for their eyes and of the proper intensity; brightness determines how long you need to use it and how close you need it to be. The FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) hasn’t ruled on any devices, so they are not regulated, so it’s important for people to work with providers or sources of information that are reputable.”

Anderson recommends starting with the Center for Environmental Therapy at www.cet.org, which offers videos and written information, rating scales for self-screening and information about reputable devices. It’s also important to make an appointment with a licensed therapist or psychiatrist if you believe you may have SAD. Cognitive behavioral therapy and medications commonly used to treat depression are also highly effective treatments for Seasonal Affective Disorder, Anderson said.

Military Writers Society Honors USMC Veteran At Annual Conference

he Military Writers Society of America honored decorated U.S. Marine Corps veteran, author, actor and Hollywood film consultant Dale Dye as Writer of the Year at its annual conference held this year in Albuquerque, two months shy of Veterans Day on Nov. 11.

The author of more than a dozen published books and consultant for Academy- and Emmy-award winning films, Dye’s mission is the authentic portrayal of service men and women in print and film and to make war movies more realistic.

The writers group recognized Capt.

Dye, 75, for his book, Bangkok File, the eighth in his Shake Davis series.

The event was co-sponsored by SouthWest Writers, an Albuquerquebased nonprofit devoted to helping writers improve their craft.

A “lifelong movie buff with a special penchant for war movies,” Dye said he started making movies when he retired from active duty in 1984, after serving with the Marines in Vietnam and having survived

31 major combat operations. His impressive list of feature films for which he has consulted via his technical advisory company, Warriors, Inc., includes multiple Hollywood blockbusters: Saving Private Ryan, Platoon, Jacob’s Ladder, Born On the Fourth of July, Last of the Mohicans, Always, Under Siege, Sgt. Bilko, Guarding Tess, Natural Born Killers, Forrest Gump, Outbreak and Mission Impossible.

“The idea is to advance my personal mission of shedding some long overdue and richly-deserved light on the men and women who serve in uniform, in the past and present,” Dye said.

Too often, he said, the American public tends to romanticize warfare and/or portray military men and women as mere grunts who blindly follow orders. Nothing is romantic about war, and those who serve are “creative, intelligent and full of heart,” he says.

“I’ll always think of the Purple Hearts I wear for wounds suffered in combat as the ultimate reality check.

It just takes one wound – assuming you survive it - to remind you that

combat is the ultimate life-or-death reality. The stirring images of war as a glorious campaign, with bugles blowing and flags waving, dissipate immediately when the bleeding starts,” Dye said.

To that end, Dye also founded Warriors Publishing Group, which publishes military-themed books written by veterans.

Additionally, as part of his TV and film consulting business, actors who portray service men and women must participate in boot-camp style training before filming begins, in preparation for their roles. This conditioning, he said, helps the actors better understand the rigors our military service members experience. The result is a more realistic depiction on screen.

“So few Americans these days serve or even know someone who served, that the sacrifices made by those who do seems remote. That’s the battle I fight every day,” Dye said. “I’m blessed and privileged to be able to attract public notice with the stories I tell in one form or another, so I’ll continue to serve my brothers and sisters in uniform

in that fashion until I finally run out of ammo.”

Among the plethora of awards received by Dye over the course of his prestigious career are his vast array of military honors. They include the Bronze Star with “V” for Valor (Vietnam, 1968), three Purple Hearts, a Meritorious Service Medal (Okinawa), two Navy Commendation Medals with Combat “V” Device (Vietnam and Beirut), a Navy Achievement Medal with Combat “V” Device (Vietnam), a Joint Service Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal and Combat Action Ribbon (Vietnam and Beirut), to name a few.

“I have an award or two for what is called valor or bravery in combat.

I appreciate those, particularly since they serve to remind me of the good friends or brothers in arms that did not live through the experiences with me. Whenever I pin those decorations on my uniform, I think of those guys and I’m humbled. I stand today and do what I do today because I once stood in the shadow of those great Americans.”

N

ovember is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month. Hospice agencies nationwide are taking steps to raise awareness about the highest quality of care for people coping with life-limiting illnesses.

The word “hospice” originated in medieval times, a derivative of the Latin “hospes,” meaning host or guest. Travel-weary crusaders on their way to the Holy Land found places of refuge in monasteries. Eventually these places of rest came to be called hospices. Because great numbers of the pilgrims were in ill health, many probably spent their last days there.

No one knows how or why these hospices disappeared until the 20th century, when Dame

November Is National Hospice Month Cicely Saunders began a hospice program in England focusing on a holistic approach to caring for the terminally ill. After a lecture to nursing students at Yale University in the mid-1960s, the first hospice in the United States was established in 1974. There are well over 3,500 hospices in the country today. Close to 1.4 million individuals receive hospice care annually in the U.S. Nevertheless, many individuals die without the benefit of specialized end-of-life care due to misconceptions regarding hospice.

Hospice is a philosophy of care, a Medicare benefit and in some instances a location where care can be provided for those with a life expectancy of six months or less.

When a cure is not possible, hospice provides pain management, symptom control, psychosocial support and spiritual care to the terminally ill. Palliative care brings this holistic model to people earlier in the course of a serious illness when the

life expectancy is greater than six months.

Specialized hospice training exists for doctors, nurses and aides.

The hospice team also incudes social workers and chaplains.

The Medicare benefit for hospice was established in the mid-1980s.

It covers the cost of the hospice team, medications related to the terminal diagnosis and any medical equipment deemed necessary. Most private insurance plans also offer a hospice benefit.

When symptoms can’t be controlled at home, the option for in-patient care is available where intensive symptom management can be administered. This is often done in a hospital, a nursing facility or a free -standing hospice unit.

How and when does an individual contact hospice? Now is the best time to learn more.

Although end-of-life care may be difficult to discuss, it is best for patients and their family members to fully understand their care

options well before they actually need them. Having a discussion early on provides the patient the opportunity to share their wishes, priorities and goals. When you learn more about hospice care early, it can greatly reduce stress when the time for hospice is needed. Patients can make an educated decision that includes the advice and input of family members and loved ones. Hospice care at any stage, but particularly early on, can significantly lighten the burden of both the patient and primary caregivers.

Hospice care is a journey where the team accompanies the patient and their family. Hospice does nothing to speed up or slow down the process of dying; hospice care manages symptoms and discomfort for the best quality of life and to minimize suffering. A simple way to explain hospice care is that the emphasis is placed on care, not cure.

The book focuses on the experiences of seniors and how important it is for individuals to have meaning in life, giving order to the chaos of living.

Gawande tells a story about a homesteader named Thomas, a doctor so focused on his love of farming that he gave up a prestigious position in medicine for a job at a nursing home, which offered a schedule that allowed him to work around his livestock and land management obligations.

He wore overalls under his white lab coat and had a bushy beard.

He spent hours per day living a full life outdoors with animals and fervently believed it was essential that care facilities inspire a purpose for living.

Thomas proposed that facility directors bring in birds, cats and dogs to cure the “three plagues of nursing homes: boredom,

loneliness and helplessness.”

When Thomas was met with shock or resistance from his team, he clapped back, “Just put it down.”

Magically his center was awarded the opportunity to implement all the requests. They got 100 parakeets, four dogs, two cats, some rabbits and hens delivered to the center. Hilariously, 100 parakeets arrived on the same day without a single cage. (The cages arrived later.) Thomas said the elders “laughed their butts off,” watching the staff catch the birds. The also introduced plants, a vegetable garden and an on-site daycare for staff children.

The changes brought about a complete shift in the atmosphere of the facility and led to a 50 percent drop in prescription use, 30 percent decrease in drug costs and a 15 percent decline in death rates. Thomas described the old nursing home model as having the capacity to preserve human life without addressing what it means to be alive. The animals, plants, garden and children were ways for both the caregivers and the guests

to engage in life-giving activities throughout the day and to focus on what it means to live.

Sometimes it takes a champion like Thomas to remind us that the purpose of life can be simple. For those moments when we feel a need for greater meaning, a walk around the block or a visit to a park to hear children play might be just the trick.
