Volunteers Needed To Help With The 2018 New Mexico Senior Olympics State Summer Games!

T

he New Mexico Senior Olympics is looking for five hundred energetic volunteers to help the 2018 State Summer Games run like clockwork. Albuquerque is hosting the State Summer Games between July 18-22, 2018 in locations around the city, including the University of New Mexico, Balloon Fiesta Park, Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center, Balloon Fiesta Park and the Jerry Cline Complex. Wendy Luck, the volunteer coordinator for New Mexico Senior Olympics, explained that volunteers sign up for at least one four-hour shift in one of several areas, events game support, fruit and water distribution, souvenir sales, posting results and athlete check-in. All volunteers will be provided with advance training during one the orientation session.

Some volunteer assignments require to interact directly with athletes participating in the 24 sporting events and may require specific technical skills or prior knowledge of the sport.

Luck said she is hoping that groups of volunteers from civic organization, non-profit groups and clubs that need to fulfill outreach hours will sign up to help with the games. It is easy to sign up a group. All volunteers must be at 16 years old to participate, will receive a T-shirt, certificate and an invitation to attend a Summer Games kick-off party. Volunteers who participate in the 2018 State Summer Games may also have an opportunity to participate in the much larger 2019 National Senior Games, which are being held for the first time in Albuquerque June 14-25, 2019. For the National Senior Games, which attracts athletes from around the country, Luck said she will need 3500 game volunteers. Organizers are expecting 10,500 athletes, plus an additional 15,000 friends and family members to attend the National Senior Games.

The State Summer Games is a 24-sport annual competition for men and women age 50 and over. It is the largest multi-sport competition in New Mexico for active seniors. Athletes compete in 5-year age divisions.

Sports include Air Gun, Archery, Badminton, Basketball Freethrow, Bowling, Cycling, Dance, Disc Golf, 8-Ball Pool, Frisbee, Golf, Horseshoes, Huachas, Pickleball, Power Walk, Racewalk, Racquetball, Road Race, Shuffleboard, Soccer Kick, Softball Throw, Swimming, Table Tennis, Talent, Tennis, Track & Field and Triathlon. There is no pre-qualifying to register for the State Games.

urse Sandy Wexler went to her dentist in 2012 for a routine teeth cleaning.

During the exam, her dentist took a moment to feel the sides of her face, jaw and neck, looking for signs of oropharyngeal cancer—a type of cancer that occurs at the back of the mouth or top of the throat. Her dentist noticed an enlarged lymph node on the right side of Wexler’s neck and sent Sandy to see her physician.

It was metastatic squamous cell oropharyngeal cancer.

After weeks of radiation and chemotherapy at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Wexler was cancer-free.

But had she not seen the dentist when she did, Wexler might not be alive today.

“I credit [my dentist] with saving my life because otherwise it could have been six more months before this could have been diagnosed and found,” she said.

The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be 51,540 new cases of oral cancer

and oropharyngeal cancer diagnosed this year and 10,030 deaths from them. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has noted that oropharyngeal cancer is on the rise.

As doctors of oral health, dentists see the mouth as a window to overall health and, as in Wexler’s case, can identify clues suggesting cancer.

This means more and more dentists are talking with patients about health issues that might at first pass seem unrelated but can actually affect oral health.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is one such topic.

In fact, the American Dental Association has partnered with MD Anderson in an effort to improve public and professional education about the HPV vaccine and HPV-related cancers.

HPV vaccination was first discussed for its benefit in preventing cervical cancer in women, but there are other HPVrelated cancers, including those at

the back of the throat and the top of the mouth. The HPV vaccine can prevent infection with those strains of HPV responsible for 60 percent of oropharyngeal cancer cases.

Because of this, consistent with the recommendation of the CDC, many dentists are now recommending both their male and female adolescent patients get the vaccine.

At your next dental appointment, don’t be surprised if your dentist checks for signs of oral and oropharyngeal cancer and talks to you about the benefits of the HPV vaccine. HPV vaccination can prevent cancers; a thorough exam for signs of oral and oropharyngeal cancers could save your life.

Where The Bodies Are Buried

S

tudy any detailed street map of Albuquerque and you’ll find them. They’re tucked away in odd places - in industrial neighborhoods, alongside freeways or on dead-end gravel roads that have no name.

Cemeteries. Lots of cemeteries.

Some are large and wellmaintained. Others are neglected and all but forgotten. Other, even older burial sites have disappeared altogether from our maps and our memories, and are rediscovered only when construction activities unearth human remains. Some lie beneath

streets, parks, churches and schools. The dead, it seems, are everywhere.

Recently, while researching another subject, I ran across an interesting study, published in 1999 by the City of Albuquerque in collaboration with Quivira Research Associates. Working from old maps, archives, church records and personal interviews with longtime residents, the research team identified 68 cemeteries or burial sites within the study area of Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, and parts of Sandoval and Valencia counties.

The report notes that many more probably remain undiscovered.

Local topography determines where a community buries its dead. In the Albuquerque area, cemeteries are concentrated along the strip known informally as the sandhills, roughly paralleling Interstate 25. The sandhills mark the edge of an ancient river terrace, rising abruptly above the present floodplain of the Rio Grande. Other burial sites are located on the bluffs on the west side of the river and on areas of higher ground within

the floodplain. Shallow water tables and the risk of deceased loved ones being washed away by periodic flooding discouraged burials in low-lying valley areas.

During the Spanish and Mexican periods, when virtually everyone in New Mexico was at least nominally Catholic, each parish church had its own camposanto, duly consecrated and located either adjacent to the church or on higher ground nearby. As the city grew up around them, many of these areas on the fringes of the valley became industrialized, but the graveyards remain. Although they may appear to belong to another era, most are still in use.

Albuquerque’s oldest church, San Felipe Neri, was established in 1706 and originally stood on the west side of Old Town Plaza, about where the Basket Shop is today. Burials from that period were discovered during the construction of Plaza Don Luis in the 1980s. Others are thought to lie still undisturbed nearby. The present church dates from 1793. More graves may lie beneath its flagstone courtyard, and possibly even under the floor of the church.

By 1869, the little camposanto in Old Town was getting crowded, and the land was needed for other purposes, so the Jesuit fathers who then served the parish established a new cemetery a couple of miles to the east. Named in honor of Santa Barbara, it became the growing city’s main Catholic cemetery.

Most (though probably not all) of the remains buried at San Felipe were removed and reinterred at Santa Barbara. Unfortunately, a fire in 1949 destroyed the burial records, so the locations of many graves are now unknown. Santa Barbara, at the northeast corner of Edith and Odelia, has now been incorporated into the newer Mount Calvary Cemetery just to the north.

The arrival of increasing numbers of people of other faiths during the last quarter of the 19th century brought the need for new cemeteries, since nonCatholics could not be interred in consecrated ground. The largest of these was Fairview, on south Yale Boulevard, which opened in 1881. Many names familiar to anyone acquainted with Albuquerque’s history can be found on tombstones in the older section there. In one corner all the graves date from 1918—a grim reminder of the deadly influenza epidemic that struck that year.

All of our older graveyards have suffered to some degree

from vandalism and neglect, some so much so that no trace of them remains at all—at least not above ground.

Not far from Fairview, at the corner of Coal and Buena Vista, a previously unknown graveyard—possibly a “potter’s field”—was discovered during the construction of the KANW-FM radio studio in 1969. It appeared to have been in use between 1912 and 1945, and may have been associated with one of the many tuberculosis sanatoriums that dotted the mesa east of town during that period. Not everyone who came here “chasing the cure” managed to find it. Some of these unfortunates ended up in small, informal burial plots maintained by the sanatorium. Another, adjacent to St. Joseph’s Hospital (now Lovelace) on Martin Luther King, lay forgotten for decades until Interstate 25 cut through the neighborhood in the 1960s. The bodies were reinterred elsewhere, but others have turned up in the same general area over the years.

The Albuquerque Indian School near 12th Street and Menaul, which opened in 1882, also lost students to illness from time to time. A plaque in nearby 4-H Park marks the location of their otherwise unmarked graves.

This Memorial Day, as we honor the dead, both those who fell in battle and those who died more prosaically, perhaps we should also give a thought to the many other forgotten forebears whose bones surround us.

ig your teeth into an exciting evening of contemporary ballet with Food for Thought…A Feast in Dance by Ballet Repertory Theatre, May 5th and 6th at Albuquerque’s historic downtown KiMo Theatre.

This banquet of original contemporary ballets will include new works by Celia Dale, Katherine Giese, Beth Griffin, and Alex Ossadnik. The menu features 6 courses of unique choreographic reflections on Food for Thought…A Feast in Dance, this year’s title and theme for Ballet Repertory Theatre’s annual contemporary concert.

Choreographer Celia Dale brings to the stage a mysterious and evocative piece entitled SweetBitter. Ms. Dale has taken the title of the concert as an invitation

to “rethink” a piece first presented in 2004 into a new form. Still using the same title, music, and movement as a recipe, she has created a delicious reworking of the original.

BRT’s Artistic/Executive Director choreographed three pieces for this production. The first of which is Sippin. Inspired by the idea of pairing wine with food to stimulate the senses, Ms. Giese has paired styles of wine with music and movement to give the audience a wine tasting experience through hearing and seeing unique characteristic of various wines. Ms. Giese’s second selection is a light hearted take on some of the traditions associated with St. Catherine’s Day in her piece called Cattern Cakes for the Catherinettes. For her third piece, Ms. Giese decided to take the audience on the intellectual side of the theme with her Food

for Thought…Up & Doing, which is performed to the poem A PSALM OF LIFE by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Choreographer Beth Griffin’s piece Comedor Miguelito’s tells a tale of hungry and tired dancers trying to get a bite to eat when they happen upon Miguel and his little hole in the wall dining room. The only problem is Miguel has delusions of grandeur with a

Seinfeldesq soup nazi personality.

So in a Twilight Zone twist, the dancers must dance for their dinner.

The evening’s main course showcases Alex Ossadnik’s original one act ballet, Like Water for Chocolate. Loosely based on the novel of the same name by Laura Esquivel, Mr. Ossadnik’s ballet is seen through the eyes of Gertrudis, sister to Tita and

Rosaura, all daughters of the widow Doña Elena. The story reflects on an old Mexican tradition where the youngest daughter in a family cannot marry as she is destined to take care of her mother until death and what Pedro agrees to do, to be close to his true love, Tita, Doña Elena’s youngest.

There will be two chances to see this exciting event: an evening performance at 7:00pm on May

5th and a matinee at 2pm on May 6th. Tickets are on sale at KiMoTickets.com and in person at the KiMo Theatre Box Office.

A Senior That Does The Extraordinary

T

here is not a continent on Earth that hasn’t met the feet of Joyce Godwin. She’s traveled each of them extensively and with great purpose.

Her favorite, she says, is Africa. It captured her heart years ago, and she has revisited time and time again, including a hike up Mount Kilimanjaro.

Her abiding affection for Africa is why she has chosen to devote so much time recently to developing water projects in Rwanda.

Godwin, who will turn 75 in July, says that it is important that this season of her life is filled with meaningful investment in others. She has spent much of her life focused on organizational development, including as vice president and secretary of Presbyterian Healthcare Services, chair of the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce, chair of the United Way Campaign and the founding chair of Quality New Mexico – to name a just few. This experience has been a perfect catalyst to helping global nonprofits, including World Vision, in their efforts to empower and equip communities to solve problems. When she heard that resources were needed to help Rwandan villages access water, the idea fit within a passion of hers: to help her Albuquerque community connect with and support people around the world.

Her global mindset and worldview has ensured that none who know her are ignorant of issues that affect people outside the U.S. She has worked tirelessly on efforts to support refugees, promote maternal and child health, women’s education, and now communities that need access to water.

Her efforts include fund-raising by drawing on people in her circles of influence to help them get excited about the possibility of changing the world one community at a time.

“I want to help people think about life here and what is necessary, and where there is room for generosity in their lives,” Godwin says of a recent gathering she supported to raise awareness and funds for water projects in Honduras. “It doesn’t have to be international but can start with local organizations. I would like to get people being generous locally and generous internationally.”

To Godwin, living generously is not an idea restricted to financial resources. She is working to drum up passion among her peers for generous involvement in engaging with issues and people. Author Shane Claiborne and World Vision leader Richard Stearns say that the problem we face as a society isn’t that we do not care about the poor but that we simply do not know the poor. Godwin says that for her peers – especially those of means – to

simply meet the homeless or refugees in their own communities would be lifechanging. And that life change would result in world change.

With her husband, anesthesiologist Earl Godwin, she has packed suitcases full of medical supplies to take to remote places around the world. The two are committed to living in a fiscally and socially responsible manner for the good of mankind, and their mindset is contagious.

Godwin comes by her passion for organizational and personal responsibility honestly. Born in 1943, in Washington, D.C., to a family affected by rampant wartime poverty, Godwin remembers feeling a pull toward concern for others at an early age. By 6 years old, she was working to help support the family. She was writing greeting cards for a national corporation who only knew Godwin by name and penmanship, unaware that they were being represented by a child. She became a door-to-door saleswoman, eventually expanding her enterprise to include products she would make at home, such as bathroom décor made from high-end washcloths that she could mark up and resell. She supported her family and herself on her ambition and attitude.

Now, nearly seven decades later, Godwin has no notions of slowing down. She has stepped back from operating on a bevy of local boards,

but only so that she has more time to devote to other passion projects. She is currently mentoring women, including widows, who aren’t financially literate or who need help learning about how to invest wisely in all manner of resource – including time, talent and treasure.

She is looking forward to taking some of those who have caught her passion for water projects in Rwanda to actually view the work that these communities are doing to lift themselves out of poverty. It will be one of what World Vision calls its “vision trips,” which are focused solely on learning how other people live and how their investment makes a difference.

When she thinks about the future, Godwin is excited and impassioned: “I would really like to be available to help organizations learn a bit more on governance, of ministry, however small it is. I want to help them to learn succession planning, having board members that don’t look like them, why diversity is important, and people are catching on to that now,” she said. “(I want to help) people become educated beyond textbook learning, and then working with people who do have resources to give to help them look at how to better invest those resources and to really help them understand and investigate what they are giving to. I want people to invest in something meaningful.”

Local Author Pens NM Author’s Cautionary Book: “Bozos, Corner Monsters and Whiz-Bangs:

uring her 30-plus years in the financial and investing industry, Lorraine Ell has seen it all. Now, she is sharing what investors should expect and should not put up with - from their financial advisors in a new book entitled, “Bozos, Monsters and Whiz ­Bangs : Bad Advice from Financial Advisors and How to Avoid It.” Ell, who is chief executive officer and senior financial advisor with Better Money Decisions, explains, “Investing today is complex. The research, tools, and even investment vehicles available should be viewed not just on how exciting

It’d just be wrong.” He later called the woman “kitten.”

Or, the retiree who brought in a nearly-six-foot-high stack of brokerage statements that showed her advisor had been trading stocks on a nearly daily basis to churn (and earn) commissions, causing her investment to decline in value in a positive market environment.

And, who can forget the engineer who invested based on the recommendations of a TV financial guru dressed up in costumes and parading around the stage, clanging a cowbell or throwing a chair to make a point?

When confronted with the fact that his portfolio would have done better if he had invested in the S&P 500 rather than relying on the “picks” of this individual, the engineer said,”... he’s on TV, he must be legit, right?”

Ell explains, “My view is that a financial advisor should understand your goals for your money and your life, and should be guiding you through all the financial decisions you have to make before retirement to achieve those goals. Each person is different, and there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach that will work for each individual. Simply trading stocks isn’t enough. You can and should expect more from

the person you are entrusting your money and your future to.”

Ell began her career in the 1980s as an advisor with Drexel, Burnham and Lambert and J.W. Charles and as CoOwner of a Registered Investment Advisory (RIA) firm. She is frequently quoted in MarketWatch, Investment News, Investor’s Business Daily, Yahoo Finance and The Wall Street Journal. She is also a serial entrepreneur who co -founded a marketing company in Budapest, Hungary, and has taught in Saudi Arabia.

In her book, Ell recommends anyone who wants to hire a financial investor ask a series of 29 questions, including not only their investment philosophy and methodology, but also how often they will communicate, whether they will be the primary contact, and even if they have ever been the subject of a customer

complaint. She suggests meeting with them and the entire team (if more than one person will be working on your account) several times and investigating potential financial advisors on www.brokercheck.com.

“This is a big decision, so you have to get it right the first time or be willing to look for another financial advisor if you are not getting what you need. The person you hire should provide the services that are important to you, and they should always be willing and available to answer your questions, explain where you are financially, or listen to your input. You have that right and it’s absolutely a reasonable expectation,” Ell concludes.

W

hat is Type 2 diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes, also known as adult-onset diabetes, is a disease in which the body has high blood glucose levels, or blood sugar, mainly because the body is not able to effectively use the insulin it makes in the pancreas gland.

This condition is known as insulin resistance. Early in the progression of the disease, the pancreas tries to compensate by making more insulin. As the disease progresses over time, the ability of the pancreas to make insulin does not keep up, causing the rise in blood sugar.

What causes Type 2 diabetes?

The two most important factors are genetics and lifestyle. If you have a family history of Type 2 diabetes, you have a greater chance of developing the disease.

Lifestyle choices, such as being sedentary and consistently eating more calories than your body can burn, can result in being overweight or even obese, which increas es the risk for Type 2 diabetes.

What other risk factors should I be aware of?

Other risk factors include how your body distributes fat. People with more fat distribution in the abdominal area have a greater risk for developing Type 2 diabetes.

People with fat in other areas of the body, such as the hips and legs, have a lower risk for the disease. Race is also a factor.

For unknown reasons, AfricanAmericans, Hispanics and Native Americans have a higher risk than whites.

In general, age is another factor.

The risk for diabetes increases with age. More recently, however, Type 2 diabetes has been increasing in younger adults and children.

What can I do to decrease my risk for Type 2 diabetes?

While some risk factors — such as age, race or family history — can’t be changed, there are steps that you can take.

If you are overweight or obese, losing weight can decrease your risk for diabetes. It is helpful to know your body mass index, or BMI. Your doctor can help you with this, or you can weigh yourself, measure your height, and use BMI charts that you can find online. A normal BMI goes up to 25. Overweight is defined as a BMI between 25 and 30, and obesity is defined as a BMI over 30.

In general, losing weight and keeping it off requires a change in diet and an increase in physical activity. It is very helpful to start a food diary and record everything you eat and drink. Tracking the number of calories you eat or drink daily should be part of that.

Increasing your daily physical activity will help to burn calories. Tracking your exercise will help you measure your

progress. The United States Centers for Disease Control provides useful information about healthy weight loss at https://www.cdc.gov/ healthyweight/losing_weight/.

Why should I be concerned about diabetes?

Over time, diabetes can cause damage to a number of organs in your body, including the brain, eyes, heart, blood vessels, nerves, kidney and others. Diabetic patients have a higher risk for stroke, blindness, heart attack, nerve damage and kidney failure. The risk of long-term complications is higher for people with poorly controlled diabetes.

any who know me know that I love to read cookbooks and watch cooking shows. I reviewed many cookbooks at my former place of employment. Not only was it a plus that I was able to keep the cookbooks, but I also enjoyed reviewing them.

When browsing through my numerous cookbooks the countless recipes I have saved on Foodnetwork.com, I remembered the very first recipe I tried in 2009. It was a recipe from Daisy Martinez’s show, Viva Daisy! It’s a Grilled Skirt Steak with Potato-Egg Salad from her “Popi’s Steak and Potatoes” episode. I made both recipes the very next day for myself and absolutely loved it! Both recipes were incredibly easy and fantastic. Since that time, I have made it dozens of times and it’s always a hit. These recipes are perfect for the warmer spring weather because the steaks could be grilled outdoors and the potato salad does not contain mayonnaise.

Grilled Skirt Steak (Churrasco) Note: I have also made it several times with tri-tip steak with great results. Use steak of your choice.

Ingredients: • 2 skirt steaks (about 1 pound each), trimmed of fat and cut in 1/2 crosswise • Sea salt and fresh ground black pepper • 1 teaspoon onion powder • 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar (I’ve also used apple cider vinegar) • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil • Vegetable oil cooking spray Note: I also add 1 teaspoon garlic powder Chimichurri sauce recipe follows:

4 cups flat-leaf parsley (from about 1 large bunch) 6 cloves garlic 1/2 to 3/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/4 cup red wine vinegar Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 heaping teaspoon red pepper flakes, optional Directions: Rub a generous amount of salt and pepper into both sides of the steaks.

Rub the onion powder (and garlic powder if using) into the steaks, dividing it evenly. Put the steaks into a baking dish or container that holds them comfortably. Sprinkle the vinegar over the steaks and brush them with the olive oil. Marinate the steaks at room temperature for up to 30 minutes (I usually marinate at room temperature for about one hour) or refrigerate for up to 2 days. Heat a gas grill to medium-high or heat a large grill pan over medium-high heat. Grill the steaks, turning only once, to the desired doneness. Remove from the grill and let rest 5 minutes. If desired, slice the steaks thinly against the grain before serving. Drizzle some of the chimichurri over the steaks.

Chimichurri Sauce: In a food processor, pulse the parsley and garlic until finely chopped.

Scrape into a bowl and stir in the olive oil and vinegar. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Add the red pepper flakes, if using, for a spicy chimichurri.

Potato-Egg Salad (Ensalada de Papas y Huevos) Ingredients: • 3 pounds Eastern or white new potatoes, cut into 1/2-inch dice (about 8 cups) • Salt • 4 extra large eggs (I use 6-8 eggs) • 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar • 1/3 cup olive oil • 1/4 cup minced fresh chives (I use 1/2 cup or add 1 scallion, green part mostly) • Freshly ground black pepper • 1 bottled roasted red pepper, drained and cut into 1/2-inch dice, optional Note: I always add 1/2-3/4 cup Kosher Dill Pickles, chopped, and about 1/2 can black olives, sliced Directions: Put the potatoes in a large saucepan or Dutch oven. Pour in enough cold water to cover and add a small handful of salt. Bring to a boil over high heat. Adjust the heat so the water is simmering and cook until the potatoes can be easily pierced with a paring knife, about 10 minutes.

While the potatoes are cooking, start making the eggs: Put the eggs in a separate saucepan and pour in enough cold water to cover. Bring to a boil over high heat, then adjust the heat to medium-low. Cook the eggs for exactly 10 minutes. Drain the hot water and cool the eggs in the pan under cold running water for several minutes. Peel, and set aside.

When the potatoes are tender, drain them and put them in a serving bowl. Immediately sprinkle the vinegar over them and set aside to cool.

Don’t stir the potatoes too much while still hot, as they tend to fall apart and look unattractive.

Once the potatoes are cool, add the olive oil and chives (pickles and olives, if using) and stir gently to coat the potatoes with oil. Season the salad, to taste, with salt and pepper and toss again. Cut the eggs into quarters and decorate the top of the salad. Sprinkle with diced red pepper, if using. Serve at room temperature.

Stir gently to combine and garnish with an orange wheel.

New Shingles Vaccine Provides Better Protection For Seniors

ear Savvy Senior, A good friend of mine got a bad case of shingles last year and has been urging me to get vaccinated. Should I? Suspicious Susan Dear Susan, Yes! If you’re 50 or older, there’s a new shingles vaccine on the market that’s far superior to the older vaccine, so now is a great time to get inoculated. Here’s what you should know.

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a burning, blistering, often excruciating skin rash that affects around 1 million Americans each year. The same virus that causes chickenpox causes shingles.

What happens is the chickenpox virus that most people get as kids never leaves the body. It hides in the nerve cells near the spinal cord and, for some people, emerges later in the form of shingles.

In the U.S., almost one out of every three people will develop shingles during their lifetime.

While anyone who’s had chickenpox can get shingles, it most commonly occurs in people over age 50, along with people who have weakened immune systems.

But you can’t catch shingles from someone else.

Early signs of the disease include pain, itching or tingling before a blistering rash appears several days later, and can last up to four weeks. The rash typically occurs on one side of the body, often as a band of blisters that extends from the middle of your back around to the breastbone. It can also appear above an eye or on the side of the face or neck.

In addition to the rash, about 20 to 25 percent of those who get shingles go on to develop severe nerve pain (postherpetic neuralgia, or PHN) that can last for months or even years. And in rare cases, shingles can also cause strokes, encephalitis, spinal cord damage and vision loss.

New Shingles Vaccine The Food and Drug Administration recently approved a new vaccine for shingles called Shingrix (see Shingrix.com), which provides much better protection than the older vaccine, Zostavax.

Manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, Shingrix is 97 percent effective in preventing shingles in people 50 to 69 years old, and 91 percent effective in those 70 and older.

By comparison, Zostavax is 70 percent effective in your 50s; 64 percent effective in your 60s; 41 percent effective in your 70s; and 18 percent effective in your 80s.

Shingrix is also better that Zostavax in preventing nerve pain that continues after a shingles rash has cleared – about 90 percent effective versus 65 percent effective.

Because of this enhanced protection, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone age 50 and older, receive the Shingrix vaccine, which is given in two doses, two to six months apart.

Even if you’ve already had shingles, you still need these vaccinations because reoccurring cases are possible. The CDC also recommends that anyone previously vaccinated with Zostavax be revaccinated with Shingrix.

You should also know that Shingrix can cause some adverse side effects for some people, including muscle pain, fatigue, headache, fever and upset stomach.

Shingrix – which costs around $280 for both doses – is (or will soon be) covered by insurance including Medicare Part D prescription drug plans, but be aware that the shingles vaccines are not always well covered. So before getting vaccinated, call your plan to find out if it’s covered, and if so,

which pharmacies and doctors in your area you should use to insure the best coverage.

Or, if you don’t have health insurance or you’re experiencing medical or financial hardship, you might qualify for GlaxoSmithKline’s Patient Assistance Program, which provides free vaccinations to those who are eligible.

praying the perimeter of a house with pesticides for cockroach control is not good for the ecosystem. There are numerous beneficial organisms in every yard that could be harmed in the process. Some are pollinators; others feed on decaying or dead plant or animal matter. But most important, especially if you have a garden, are the predators that feed on plant pests.

Spiders, predatory mites and centipedes feed on numerous pests. It is difficult to think of a centipede as beneficial, but soil centipedes (Geophilomorpha) and stone centipedes (Lithobiomorpha) are very small varieties that could not hurt a human or pet but that do feed on many pest insects. Some beneficial insects include praying

mantids (Mantidae), which prey on a lot of insects and even kill and eat black widow spiders.

Ladybird beetles (Coccinelidae), also known as ladybugs, are a major predator of aphids and other small pests. Ground beetles (Carabidae) are large, black beetles that feed on grubs and insect pupae.

Many soft-winged flower beetles (Melyridae) feed on pest species.

Rove beetles (Staphylinidae) feed on grubs, insect pupae and root maggots, and in some cases, aphids. There are other beetles that are beneficial, too.

Recently someone sent me a bunch of beetles he had “infesting” his desert willow. It turned out the beetles were soft-winged flower beetles in the genus Trichochrous and they were doing good work on the tree, helping control real pests. If in doubt about a bug, get it identified so you don’t kill something beneficial.

In its larval stage, some species

of the hover fly (Syrphidae) as well as the larvae of bee flies (Bombyliidae) and tachina flies (Tachinidae) feed on parasites.

Some true bugs (Hemiptera) are beneficial, such as assassin bugs (Reduviidae), which hide under leaves and ambush caterpillars.

Minute pirate bugs (Anthocoridae) are very small and prey on thrips and other small pests. Some seed bugs (Lygaeidae) are also beneficial. The big-eyed bugs (Geocoris spp.) will prey on various plant pests. Lacewings (Planipennia) are predators of aphids, thrips, spider mites, leafhoppers and other small pests.

There are even many species of parasitic wasps (Hymenoptera), most very small, that will parasitize many pest insects and offer good control.

If you want to have the perimeter of your home treated, make sure the pesticides are only applied to cracks or openings in

the foundation where pests can enter your home. Only apply pesticides where pests are hiding.

As mentioned, it is not a good idea to generically spray pesticides all over the ground and the side of your house. The careless use of pesticides will also harm birds and lizards that feed on insects.

Foster Grandparent volunteers must be willing to serve an average of 20 hours per week and must be able to pass a background check, physical, and tuberculosis test. Foster Grandparent volunteers serve one-on-one with children, working with them to build their social and emotional development as well as help improve their literacy skills.

u-erh, pronounced ‘poo-air,’ is a fermented black tea from China. It is full of antioxidantrich polyphenols and chemical compounds that benefit metabolism, digestion, nervous system disorders and detoxification. This dark, smooth-bodied caffeinated tea can be used to replace your morning cup of coffee or as an after-meal beverage to assist with digestion and weight loss programs. If you struggle with high cholesterol, diabetes or gastrointestinal illnesses, developing a long-term behavior of drinking pu-erh tea might help you take less medication for treating those conditions.

The National Hispanic Cultural Center Renames Entrance To Roy E. Disney Center For Performing Arts

T

he National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) announced that the Haverland Carter Lifestyle Group will make a donation to the NHCC and the NHCC Foundation over the next five years and that the North entrance to the NHCC’s Roy E. Disney Center for Performing Arts will be renamed the Haverland Carter Lifestyle Group Entrance Courtyard.

The donation from Haverland Carter Lifestyle Group will be paid out in equal, annual payments over five years, with the first payment of $20,000 being issued in April 2018.

From that first payment, 50 percent will be allocated to the NHCC Foundation to use for operating

needs and 50 percent will be allocated for the NHCC’s capital, operating and programmatic needs.

The next four installments will be placed into a restricted endowment, with the principle held in perpetuity and earnings made available for the benefit of the NHCC’s capital, operating and programmatic needs The unveiling of the renamed courtyard will take place on May 6, 2018, prior to Una Celebración de Mexico con Antonio Reyna y Reynaldo Maestas, which Haverland Carter Lifestyle Group is also supporting as the title sponsor.

The performance will begin at 2 pm in the Albuquerque Journal Theatre and naming ceremony will occur before the show begins.

f April showers bring May flowers, then what does May bring? I think of May the way Leslie Gore sang about it in her 1963 song Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows. Warm weather and spring rainfalls followed by rainbows worthy of photo documentation mean more time spent outdoors. Of course, with that extra sun exposure we all think about sunscreen products lathered on our skin. But few of us give equal attention to our eyes.

The sun’s ultraviolet rays can damage one’s eyes, resulting in a number of eye maladies. How much sun exposure is too much? It is difficult to determine the exact amount on an acute basis, but we do know that sun damage to eyes

Cataracts are the leading cause of reduced vision in Americans over age 65 and have been linked to long-term sun exposure. The acute effects of sunlight can present in short fashion. Problems such as photokeratitis and photoconjunctivitis can occur after only one day at the pool, the beach or even on the ski slopes.

Let’s learn about the different kinds of sunlight we are exposed to on a daily basis. UVA, UVB and UVC are the three types of light that can affect us. The most serious light form is UVC, but our atmosphere absorbs this before it reaches us. UVB is the next most dangerous light. It can cause cataracts, photokeratitis, pterygium formation and even squamous cell carcinoma of the eye. UVA light rarely causes problems but can cause retinal damage.

Cataracts are also the leading cause of blindness in the world. A cataract is an opacification of the lens of the eye. Besides sunlight exposure, other risk factors associated with cataract formation include smoking, excess alcohol consumption, poor nutrition, a

sedentary lifestyle and diabetes mellitus, especially if accompanied by metabolic syndrome.

Photokeratitis can be considered corneal sunburn. It is characterized by strong eye pain that interferes with your daily activities.

Individuals often describe the feeling of “sand in the eye” and complain of red, watery, swollen eyes. It often is self-limited, meaning that it will resolve within one to three days. Wearing dark glasses and avoiding sunlight will help speed up the healing process.

Pterygium is a fleshy creamcolored growth on the eye’s surface. It usually originates at the corner of the eye and grows towards the center. It is benign until it interferes with one’s vision as a result of excessive growth. Irritation of the eye and even blurry vision can result.

Prescription eye drops/ointments can help. Surgery is often delayed until all other options have been exhausted, as there is a high post– op recurrence rate.

Conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma is an eye surface cancer that is thought to be caused by excessive sun exposure. It is easily visualized and can often have large blood vessels that alert a person to its presence. Ophthalmologic consultation is required for definitive treatment.

How do we prevent these conditions? It’s as simple as sunglasses. But choose wisely when shopping for the appropriate protection. Glasses that block 99 percent of UVA and UVB are what should be used. Be sure that the glasses cover the entire eye, including the sides. John Lennonstyle glasses aren’t going to help much. Wrap-around glasses are the best choice, and darker lenses are better. Besides covering the eyes, limit the amount of time you might

expose yourself to the sun. Wear a large brimmed hat. Noon is the worst time to be out in the sun.

Noon-time sun can subject you to 10 times the UV light compared to three hours on either side of midday.

Although this is a May issue of Primetime, be aware that reflected sun from snow or ice in the winter can be just as harmful as poolreflected light.

If you wear contact lenses, you can have UV protection built into the lens. Class 1 UV blockers provide the most protection for your eyes. However, to get full protection follow these simple rules: Avoid noon–time sun, wear a wide-brimmed hat and wear wraparound sunglasses.
