Get Ready For Super Senior Tennis

T

he Northern New Mexico Tennis Association is taking registrations for low cost beginner and/ or refresher tennis lessons for adults over 60.

The Super Senior Program consists of six weeks of onehour lessons, twice a week, followed by six weeks of round-robin play at different locations.The cost is $60 for the 12-week program.

Lessons start the week of April 3, twice a week. If needed there will be a make-up week. If you miss a class you can check at one of the other locations to make-up your class.

Round Robin Play will start the week of May 22. Dates and times will be provided later.

The last Round Robin date will include lunch and a party at the Sierra Vista West Tennis Center for all participants.

A kick-off meeting will be held on Sunday April 2 at 1 PM at the Jerry Cline Tennis Center located at the corner of Louisiana and Constitution NE.

Oasis Albuquerque Helps Older Adults Prevent Falls

W

hile many of the changes we experience throughout our lives are natural parts of aging, falling is not one of them. Many activities can help prevent falls, such as exercising and mitigating fall hazards in the home. Oasis Albuquerque, a nonprofit organization that promotes successful aging, is helping New Mexicans take proactive steps to decrease their risk of falling.

To support those efforts, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM) awarded Oasis a $25,000 grant this year for its Fit and Free from Falls programming, which includes evidence-based health and fitness classes focusing on balance, strength, disease management and prevention, and other topics.

One popular class offered at Oasis is Tai Chi for Health. In the series, an instructor leads participants through gentle

movements designed to enhance balance and decrease joint pain. A Matter of Balance, another course in the Fit and Free from Falls programming, combines discussion and exercise to help enrollees prevent falls. The outcomes of the programming have been positive for participants.

“These classes outline how they can really be active managers of their health on a day-to-day basis,” said Cynthia LaCoe-Maniaci, PhD, health and wellness coordinator at Oasis. “With our Better Balance program, we generally see increases in lower body strength, endurance and agility.” The program also helps older adults maintain or minimize declines in strength and provides an important network of peer support.

The grant, which comes from BCBSNM’s Healthy Kids, Healthy Families® initiative, helps reach older adults who may not otherwise have access to this programming by allowing Oasis to provide classes at reduced or no cost. Over the years, BCBSNM has provided

more than $200,000 in grants for Oasis programming to support the health and wellness of older adults in New Mexico.

“Oasis Fit and Free from Falls participants really enjoy exercising in a space where most of the people in the class are like them,” said LaCoe-Maniaci. “It’s neat to see how much they bond over their shared experiences — whether it’s fear of falling or trying to get back into exercise.”

Irish Ancestors Helped Shape Albuquerque History

Emerald Isle Culture Still Prominent Today

ot surprisingly, the vast majority of New Mexico residents trace their lineage to Mexico, Spain or indigenous peoples. Beyond that, the state’s ethnicities begin looking like the larger American melting pot: German heritage being the next largest (8.8 percent), followed

by Irish (6.3 percent), according to the Statistical Atlas. Though the number of Emerald Isle

descendants be relatively wee tiny, some prominent Irish helped shape early Albuquerque, and the Irish culture remains a vibrant part of our community.

The Albuquerque-based IrishAmerican Society of New Mexico, a nonprofit that has existed since the 1980s and boasts about 300 members annually, promotes the heritage through regular programs and events.

“The Irish had a large part in the founding of Albuquerque,” said society president Ellen Dowling, an amateur historian who is often asked by local senior centers and other civic and social organizations to give presentations

about the Irish in Albuquerque.

“We have had some prominent people of Irish descent. The law firm Keleher & McLeod is Irish. Rodey Theatre in Popejoy Hall - Rodey was from Ireland.

Several of our governors were of Irish descent.”

Major catalysts for Irish emigration to New Mexico, and Albuquerque in particular, were military service, railroad work, educational and religious opportunities, and health benefits provided by the state’s many sanitoriums, natural springs and dry climate. A few notables who found their way here include: • William McGuinness, who emigrated from Ireland in the 1850s, joined the U.S. Army and was sent to fight the Civil War in New Mexico. He helped build the San Felipe de Neri Church in Albuquerque’s Old Town, and published a local newspaper called The Republican Review.

• Bernard Shandon Rodey, born in County Mayo, Ireland, moved to Albuquerque in 1881 and became an employee of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad Company before leaving to practice law. He introduced legislation to create the University of New Mexico, which earned him the title of “Father of the University.” Rodey eventually founded the law firm of Rodey and Rodey, known today as The Rodey Law Firm.

• John Joseph Dempsey, of Irish descent, served as U.S. Representative from New Mexico and as the state’s 13th governor.

• James Allen Menaul, who was born in Ireland, established a boarding school for Spanishspeaking boys primarily from northern New Mexico. The Menaul School for Spanish American Boys (originally an Indian school) was renamed in his honor, as was (continued on next page)

Crowley considers himself fortunate in that his father was somewhat of a local historian.

As a result, Crowley has a detailed family history as far back as possible.

Crowley knows his ancestry is mostly from West Cork. And because he’s from Ireland, many members of the society believe he may have insider knowledge about their backgrounds as well.

“It’s always a conversation that comes up,” he says. “They think I’m an expert on (genealogy).

• Billy the Kid was the son of an Irish mother, who brought him and his brother to Santa Fe. In addition to his outlaw legacy in New Mexico, the Kid participated in the state’s Lincoln County War. Within the Irish-American Society, most members are of Irish descent and age 50 and up. You just have to like things Irish,” said Dowling, who is secondgeneration Irish. Dowling’s four grandparents emigrated from the island, where several of her relatives still live.

Jim Crowley, who hails from the town of is Mallow in County Cork, Ireland, is among the society’s more recent members. He and his wife, Michelle Tan, moved about three years ago to Albuquerque from Bangkok, where he had worked in technology and she was a university professor. They wanted to be closer to her family in El Paso and in a place where they could take advantage of the outdoors. Crowley, who is also a record producer and musician, said he discovered the Irish-American Society through the weekly Celtic music sessions at Hopps Tap Room in Los Ranchos.

He says many members of the society are interested not only in the broader culture but also in learning more about their Irish own heritage. “It’s usually something people get interested in as they get a bit older – where are my roots from? And it becomes kind of a quest, I guess.”

Genealogy Offers Insight Into Self-Identity – At A Cost

W

ho am I? It’s a question we tend to seek answers to the older we get.

Fortunately, we no longer have to rely on yellowing newspaper clippings squirreled away in an attic or on stories passed down through the generations. Technological advances are providing us with the tools to construct a more comprehensive, colorful, and sometimes unexpected personal origin story through genealogy.

The accessibility of historical records and a multitude of online DNA testing sites can help a person determine their heritage dating back to the1600s, and sometimes as long ago as the 1400s. According to market research firms, the genealogy products and services market was valued at over $3 billion in 2019 and is projected to be worth more than $12 billion from 2019 to 2029. It has been widely reported that genealogy is the second most popular hobby

in America, behind gardening.

“Increasing curiosity regarding culture and heritage alongside a lack of formal records is fueling the growth of the market,” said Medium reporter Shubham Bh in an August 2019 article.

But at what cost to you?

That depends. Every person’s motivation for seeking their heritage is different – from basic curiosity about their family tree to a deep need to find their biological parents. What you decide a search is worth will largely be based on how important the answers are to you. Generally, there are three ways you’ll potentially pay for discovering your ancestral identity, and you should be prepared for all: financial costs, loss of privacy, and emotional/mental distress.

Financial costs A journey into your past could cost nothing or a few thousand dollars, based on a multitude of factors. These include how much information you want, where you seek it, and whether your ancestors

were of the status and wealth to have had well-documented records.

While some federal citizenship and immigration documents can still be obtained at no charge, that is changing. A new fee proposal by U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services could raise costs of obtaining some citizenship/visa records by 380 percent, or up to $600, for a single document.

A good amount of genealogical research can be done for free.

Albuquerque’s Main Library downtown at Copper and 5th Street houses the Albuquerque Genealogy Center on its second floor. It provides anyone with a library card free access to many popular ancestry websites that usually require a subscription, as well as one-on-one research help from volunteers, several of whom are certified in research specialties.

The library estimates that more than 3,000 people, mostly retired, use the center monthly.

“There’s a lot of people who have done research at home, but they come down for help with us.

“We’re good at finding things, working with multiple (web)sites. … Any type of research you’ve got.

It doesn’t matter if its Yugoslavia or Irish or Italian,” said volunteer Bob Harper, treasurer of the Genealogy Center, who has been an amateur genealogist for 25 years.

“We also have microfiche, which is not on the (ancestry) sites” and that is especially useful for New Mexico-specific research. People of Latinx backgrounds, as well as blacks and Asians, have had more difficulty obtaining specific ethnicity information since ancestry companies initially used Europeancentric DNA samples based upon demand. That is changing but still lags.

The Center also has three people who are professionals in DNA research. “You may take a DNA test but don’t understand what you’re looking at. They can help explain it and help you find your second cousin twice removed.”

Phil Spivey a local genetic genealogist who recently presented at the Genealogical Center about how DNA Testing Can Open New Doors in Your Brick Walls, says it is worth the small investment to incorporate DNA research into your investigation because it enables a degree of accuracy you won’t otherwise achieve.

“People work their way back in their tree and hit what’s called a brick wall,” Spivey said. “For example, they’ll find three John Smiths of the same age, in the same place, at the same time, but you don’t know which is yours. DNA allows us to … find out which matches us. For some genealogists, … DNA has proved they picked the wrong John Smith,” rendering their tree inaccurate.

Spivey hit his brick wall right out of the gate. Adopted, with an adopted sister, and not knowing his father’s name, he turned immediately to DNA testing. “A lot of people will buy several different DNA tests, which is what I did, and so that’s like $500,” he said.

However, most folks may find all they need with a simple $100 test that typically reveals relationships dating back about four generations by matching your DNA with others who have submitted their DNA for testing. More detailed tests involve tracking through maternal and paternal lines going back a thousand years or more.

It took Spivey two years to learn who his father was. “He had died by the time I found out,” he said.

Mental & Emotional Costs Just as “life is like a box of chocolates,” so is genealogy - you never know what you may get. So, it’s best to be prepared for anything once you start pulling those DNA strands.

“Genealogists will tell you we’re looking for the horse thief in the family,” Spivey said. “We want to find interesting things about our past. I didn’t find anything that shocked me. I didn’t find a serial killer in the batch.

“But we all react differently to different things. I found a marriage that my half siblings did not know about. Most took it in stride.”

In his work helping others with their family trees, Spivey said he has discovered some people who claim to be widowed but were not. There have been many cases

nationwide where people have discovered their mom and dad weren’t really their biological parents, or that they had siblings no one ever mentioned, or that their grandfather begat children with other women.

“History is history,” said Harper, whose personal search dug up a relative who was a slave owner and murderer. “You take the good with the bad and the bad with the good. Sometimes people find out things they don’t want to know. You might find out that your next-door neighbor visited your grandmother more than your grandfather did.”

Costs to Privacy It should go without saying that once you share your genome with a genetic testing company, you’ve lost some degree of control over what is arguably your most personal possession.

Yes, online companies ask permission to share your DNA with third parties. These are usually medical testing and research agencies. And yes, genetic testing companies promise digital security.

But if you give permission for your DNA to be released, as the majority of people do (thinking that furthering medical research will be for the good of humanity), you have no way of knowing the privacy policies of those third parties. Further, there is always a risk that hackers could breach the technology of testing companies, or that in time, privacy policies may change.

Your DNA can also be accessed by law enforcement and the courts seeking to crack a criminal case.

Remember that when you provide your genetic information, you are also releasing information about your relatives.

“The tools we use for figuring out our old ancestors are the same as those used to find the Golden State Killer,” Spivey said.

Saints In The Wilderness

ew Mexico rightfully prides itself on being a land of many cultures. But one group that often gets overlooked in the tourist literature are the Mormon pioneers who figured prominently in the settlement of our western borderlands.

From its founding in 1830, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints—better known as the LDS Church or the Mormons— had been the target of persecution as a result of its unorthodox

beliefs and practices, particularly polygamy, or “plural marriage,” as it was known. After being forcibly driven out of several eastern states, the Saints, under the leadership of Brigham Young, migrated en masse to Utah’s Salt Lake Valley in 1847.

The earliest Latter-day Saints to visit New Mexico were the soldiers of the Mormon Battalion, which was the subject of an earlier column. (Prime Time, May 2017.) But the battalion only passed through on its way to California during the 1847-‘48 Mexican-American War. No permanent Mormon settlements were established here at that time.

In the years that followed, the Saints colonized all of Utah and parts of the surrounding territories, and began to proselytize among the native inhabitants. They enjoyed some success at Zuni Pueblo, baptizing a number of converts there, as well as among the neighboring Navajos. So, at the direction of church leaders, a mission was

established nearby in 1876. At first it was called Navajo, but in 1886, it was changed to the biblical name of Ramah (usually pronounced RAY-mah), as it is known today. The town retains its distinctively Mormon character, with broad streets neatly laid out in a grid pattern and lined with stately Lombardy poplars.

Ramah Lake, a 50-acre irrigation reservoir just above the town, offers fishing and recreation.

At around the same time, other Mormon settlers from the area around Bluff, Utah, were moving into the San Juan country in the northwest corner of New Mexico.

Fruitland, Kirtland, Waterflow, and Bloomfield all began as Mormon communities, with Fruitland apparently the center of most church activities.

In the 1880s, as the good farmland around the Four Corners was taken up, other settlers ventured south into the valleys of the White Mountains on both side of the ArizonaNew Mexico border, and on into the Gila country, where they founded the villages of Luna, Pleasanton, and Gila. Bluewater, west of Grants, was another early Mormon settlement.

These are the communities that have survived. Many others disappeared after a few years, for life was hard in those remote valleys. Disease outbreaks, crop failures, and Apache raids all took their toll.

White “gentiles” (the Mormon term for non-Mormons) could be just as dangerous. In the San Juan country, friction with their gentile neighbors led to Mormon fences being cut, cattle stolen,

But the Mormons repaid them in kind. In 1906, a saloon opened in Fruitland over the vociferous objections of the teetotaling Saints. On Halloween night of that year, a group of masked women wearing Halloween costumes surrounded the saloon and tossed lighted torches against the building, then quickly disbursed. The place went up in flames but the arsonists could not be identified, so no one was ever prosecuted.

A second wave of Mormon emigration to New Mexico began around 1911. At that time, some 1,300 Mormons (members of families that had gone to Mexico in the 1880s to escape aggressive enforcement of the U.S. government’s antipolygamy laws) were forced to flee back across the border when the 1910 Mexican Revolution made it unsafe to remain there.

Some of the refugees pooled their resources and purchased the little village of Richmond, about 30 miles northwest of Lordsburg.

The landowner, the Gila Ranch Co., sold them the site at very favorable terms, and in gratitude they renamed the town Virden, in honor of the company’s president. Many descendants of those families still live in the area.

It should be noted that the LDS Church officially ended the practice of plural marriage in 1890, and disavows any connection with the various splinter groups that continue to adhere to it. To my knowledge, no polygamous sects exist in New Mexico.

Global Financial Guru Suze Orman Talks Retirement Planning With Prime Time New Book, PBS show advises to plan at 50, downsize early, retire at 70

uze Orman may have been blessed with financial superpowers, but she still ages just like the rest of us. Soon to be 69, the author of nine New York Time bestsellers just released a new hardcover about saving for retirement. She says it differs from her previous writings because she is

older, with a new perspective, and because today’s economy requires new strategies.

Her latest book, The Ultimate Retirement Guide for 50+: Winning Strategies to Make Your Money Last a Lifetime, was released in late February in conjunction with a 60-minute PBS special of the same name. In a February phone interview with Prime Time from her beach home in the Bahamas, Orman said this book is unique because “I’m not talking to (readers) about their money; I’m talking to them about living their lives far beyond money that you have and what you don’t have, but about facing your fears of less years to live than you have lived and knowing my next big

birthday is 80 and my friends are dying. You come at it from a whole different perspective. It’s from the perspective of someone who’s there.”

Both the book and the TV special, cover topics such as long-term care insurance, living revocable trusts, annuities and IRAs, and how to choose a financial planner.

More broadly, Orman offers her personable and understandable insight on steps you can take today to have the ultimate retirement.

“For most people, that means two things: time with friends and family, and not having to worry about money stress. ... It’s about a life that you enjoy, and if you’re not on track, why not and what can you do to get there?” she says in the TV show introduction.

In our interview with her, she shared the following just for Albuquerque:

Q: You mention in the show that your retirement advice today is vastly different from what it would have been 20, 10, even five years ago. Why is that, and what does this say for the relevance of this book in five to 10 years?

A: It’s very difficult to write a book that’s relevant all the time, especially when it comes to finances. I think one always needs to look at the date of the book they’re buying, but I don’t think we’re going to see changes in the economy for many years to come.

When I first started many years ago, most people retired with a pension, health insurance, when interest rates were high enough to get 5 percent to 10 percent in a certificate of deposit, the stock market had not gone up, real estate was not nearly as expensive, and there (continued on next page)

were all kinds of things that made your retirement really quite easy to navigate. Today, that’s not true.

Q: What do you suggest couples do when they largely disagree on a retirement strategy or even on something as fundamental as how much they need to be saving?

A: Men are 10 times more unrealistic than women when it comes to retirement planning. Men have a difficult time facing reality.

They don’t want to do a will, they don’t want to do a trust, they don’t want to pay down the mortgage. He would rather put the money in the stock market because for the past 10 years, he has been making money and he thinks that will continue forever. The problem with that is, men die before women do, and they don’t usually have to deal with the aftermath of their bad decisions. … The goal of money is for you to be secure, and therefore, if there is love and respect in this family, the partner that really wants to do thing that’s making the other partner feel insecure should cave.

Q: What should someone expect to pay a financial advisor? And is hiring a professional the best use of money when you don’t have a lot but you also don’t really know what to do with what you have?

A: I really do not like commission-based financial advisers. I like registered investment advisors, who take no more than 1 percent. They make money for you; they make money for themselves.

They would never buy mutual funds but individual stocks. If you feel you need to see a financial advisor, there’s a whole thing in the book about what to look for.

Q: What is the biggest mistake you see people make in their planning?

A: They wait to downsize. They

don’t really get that as they get older how the house is harder to take care of, more expensive to take care of.

They think they’re never going to get sick, never gonna have a car accident. They don’t have a will; they don’t have a trust. … There are moves you have to make in your 50s and 60s to make sure you are OK in your 70s and 80s. …You need to start looking at guaranteed income: How much income do you have guaranteed starting at the age of 70, and how does that meet your expenses? You do not wait till 70 to sell the home.”

While the new book and PBS special are for all ages – “to guide you from wherever you are right now, to where you want to be” Orman says that 50 is the prime age to begin retirement planning and that 70 is the new retirement age thanks to longer life expectancies.

“If you physically can, we should all be working till at least 70. The perfect scenario is you retire at 70, Social Security starts at 70, you can take money out of retirement accounts at 70. You have more time to have your home paid off in full so you don’t have a mortgage.”

Though economies change and financial strategies must, too, to be successful, Orman says one piece of advice will always remain: The earlier, the better.

Orman grew up on the South Side of Chicago, earned a bachelor’s degree in social work specializing in geriatrics at the University of Illinois, and was still a waitress at age 30 making $400 a month. In 1980, she borrowed money from friends to start a restaurant before training as an account executive for a global financial services firm.

After an advisor made harmful investments for her, Orman decided to make her own way. She has since become America’s most recognized expert on personal finance. Among

a host of accolades and awards, Orman has been named one of “The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women” by Forbes; she has been presented with the Amelia Earhart Award for her message of financial empowerment for women; and she has garnered an unprecedented eight Gracie awards, more than anyone in the entire history of this prestigious award. The Gracies recognize the nation’s best radio, television, and

cable programming for, by, and about women.

As if recollecting her own life’s path, Orman offers these words of wisdom: “Every little action that you take can make a tremendous difference in our life. Can you all live the ultimate retirement? You can, but you have to take the actions to make it possible. You have to have a plan.”

Beware Of Potential 2020 Census Scams

D

ear Savvy Senior, Can you offer some tips to help seniors guard against census scams? With the 2020 census gearing up, I’ve read that there are a lot of potential scammers out there looking to take advantage of older people and I want to protect myself.

Cautious Judy Dear Judy, Unfortunately, scams have become a persistent problem when the U.S. Census Bureau does its once-a-decade count of the U.S. population. Here’s what you can expect from the 2020 Census in the coming weeks, and how you can protect yourself from potential scams.

What to Expect In mid-March, you and nearly every other U.S. household will receive an invitation in the mail

to respond to the 2020 Census.

This year, you will have the option of completing the 2020 census questionnaire either online, by mail, or by phone. The invitation will include detailed instructions of what you need to do.

The Census Bureau warns against phishing email scams as well as con artist masquerading as census workers who will try to solicit your personal financial information. Here are some tips that can help you protect yourself.

If you don’t respond to this invitation letter, you will receive several follow-up postcard reminders from the Census Bureau by mail. If you still don’t respond by late April, a census worker will come to your door to collect your response in person.

Guard Your Information Don’t give out your personal or financial information. The Census Bureau or a legitimate census worker will never ask for your Social Security number, bank account number, credit card number, money or donations. And they will never contact you on behalf of a political party. If you’re asked for any of these, whether it be via phone, mail, email or in person, it’s a scam and should be reported to rumors@census.gov.

It only takes a few minutes to complete the census questionnaire.

While census participation is very important and required by law, you also need to be vigilant of census-linked scams. This is especially important for seniors who tend to be prime targets.

Avoid Online Scams The Census Bureau will not send you an unsolicited email to request your participation in the 2020 Census. So, ignore any emails you

get that may direct you to a census website that looks real but is fake – and may be infected with malware.

Also, don’t reply to the email or open any attachment because they could contain viruses that could infect your computer. Forward the (continued on next page)

Also, remember that a census worker will only ask you the questions that appear on the questionnaire – your name, gender, age, race, ethnicity, phone number,

Marching Into Painful “Knots” for pain or scars is best for your condition and get ready to march into scar tissue using your hands as part of your pain management toolkit.

After a physical trauma (including surgery), the body compensates with scar tissue.

Tight adhesions affect the overall functional movement of the body, creating local and postural imbalances. Repetitive motions from work or exercise can also create compensatory fibrosis or dysfunctional soft tissue.

Manually touching areas of injury and pain with mindfulness and sensitivity reveals spots where soft tissue abnormalities emerge as “knots.”

These “knots” are examples of restricted tissue needing to be physically mobilized. Prescription and over the counter medicines don’t resolve the physical manifestation of pain. Sometimes “knots” recover on their own over time; often, they do not.

Trained massage therapists can determine the most appropriate treatment plan based on the type of injury or condition. For example, it is often ill-advised to manipulate soft tissues immediately postsurgery to prevent further damage.

Massage therapy recommendations are like prescriptions. Individuals with chronic inflammatory conditions need to mobilize stagnant or stuck tissue without aggressively triggering a systemic inflammatory response.

Vibrating massage tools allow individuals to treat themselves without travel or costs related to a massage therapist. Vibrating massagers can loosen connective tissue around painful joints, increasing mobility, and decreasing pain. A porcelain Chinese soup spoon is what Chinese medicine practitioners use to “work out” “knots” and adhesions found within soft tissue and to soften scars. To treat tennis elbow, for example, take a porcelain spoon with your thumb inside the belly of the spoon. Gently scrape the spoon into fleshy areas around the

pounds will burn 100 calories for every mile they walk. If possible, walk 20-30 minutes per day. It is suggested by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that 150 minutes of walking per week can assist in weight loss if that’s your goal.

Please don’t run out the door and start a walking program without consulting your health care provider.

Just as geriatricians use the mantra of “start low and go slow” when prescribing medications, for new walkers, it is “start slow and go slow.”

After being cleared to walk, map out a nice, level and safe route to begin your walking program. Dress in removable layers, light-colored clothing and supportive shoes. If you require ambulation aids, such as canes or walkers, be sure to use them. Carry a cell phone or some other “tracking” device to alert others of your whereabouts should an emergency arise.

Walking outdoors can present other benefits such as sun-stimulated

vitamin D conversion. This is great for those individuals pre-disposed to osteoporosis. Wear sunscreen to block the harmful rays of the sun.

If walking outside is not an option, consider mall walking or using a treadmill.

Walking has been shown to improve mood, lower blood pressure and reduce risk of stroke. Creativity has also been shown to improve in walkers compared to non-walkers.

Even the gastrointestinal tract benefits from walking. Bowel movements may become more regular as well.

Your immune system can benefit from walking. Seniors with rheumatoid arthritis can benefit from high-intensity interval walking.

Pulmonary patients can benefit from the less intensive walking consistent with their tolerance level and improve their symptoms.

If walking isn’t your cup of tea, try yoga, dancing or water exercise in a pool. Immobility is the enemy. We should continue to be as active as we can for as long as we can.

nsects will be active soon and so will pesticide applicators. Many companies spray pesticides around homes and businesses in wide areas, sometimes three feet out from the foundation. They claim it kills roaches and other pests, but it will also kill many beneficial insects.

The list of the “good guys” that could be harmed is long, but they include praying mantids that prey on pests such as black widows; ladybugs that are a major predator of aphids and other small pests; ground beetles, soft-winged flower beetles, and rove beetles that prey on pests such as grubs; minute pirate bugs that prey on thrips and other small pests; bigeyed bugs that prey on tarnished

Also, more importantly, many insect-eating birds will feed on any insects that may have been exposed to the pesticides. The pesticides may not directly kill the birds, but it will compromise their immune system and even prevent them from reproducing. As you are probably aware, birds are declining at an alarming rate, and pesticides are a contributing factor. In New Mexico, many insect-eating songbirds are protected by law; it is illegal to kill or injure any of them.

While it is legal for pest companies to spray pesticides as described above, it is morally wrong, and there is nothing environmentally beneficial about doing this. Also, many companies unnecessarily spray baseboards in your home or business. When I started in the pest business over 40 years ago, I asked my supervisor why we sprayed baseboards. He said we had to spend more time in a customer’s home so they think they are getting their money’s worth. That was true then and it is true now.

Still, some companies do conduct pest control properly. They inspect your home inside and out, and if they find an infestation, they treat that one area only.

Do not let a company generically spray, and don’t let them spray pesticides inside.

Some companies say they use organic pesticides made from chrysanthemums.

Contrary to wide belief, these products are not organic as they also contain inorganic ingredients, some of which are toxic. The pesticide industry isn’t required to tell you what these other ingredients are.
