What residents may not realize is that NMSU and the state Department of Health fund a diverse array of programs and services through the extension service that are applicable and available to all residents.

The Bernalillo County Cooperative Extension Service, 1510 Menaul Blvd. NW, offers a full selection of chronic disease classes. According to the American Diabetes Association, approximately 241,000 people in New Mexico have diabetes. Many don’t even know they have the illness, which greatly increases their chances of developing the complications associated with it. The education and support provided by the service free of charge helps people create healthier lifestyles, develop better eating patterns, and obtain the knowledge to help manage or avoid chronic disease.

Learning to choose and prepare healthful foods goes a long way toward reducing the risks and severity of disease. The service seeks to help residents do just that through its Kitchen Creations class and National Diabetes Prevention Program. Kitchen Creations is a four-week cooking school that provides education and hands-on food preparation instruction from a registered dietitian. The Diabetes Prevention Program employs

certified lifestyle coaches to help participants reduce their diabetic risks by losing weight through proper eating, becoming more physically active, and learning to recognize and overcome barriers to healthful eating and physical activity.

The Chronic Disease SelfManagement Education Program features six weekly workshops each two and a half hours long - for those who suffer from diabetes, cancer, HIV and many other conditions. Subjects covered include techniques to deal with frustration, fatigue, pain, and isolation; communicating effectively with a physician; improving flexibility, strength and endurance; appropriate use of medications; nutrition; and decision-making.

Other class titles include “Eating Well with Diabetes,” “Slim and Strong,” “Healthy You,” “Stress Management and Resilience,” the “Plant Based Diet,” the “Mediterranean Diet,” “Cooking for One or Two,” and “Salads.”

Courses, classes and workshops are provided throughout the year, some depending on need and demand. They are carefully monitored via self-assessments from participants to determine whether they are helping people to attain their goals of a healthier lifestyle, better eating patterns, and coping skills. Whether a participant’s problems include depression, temptation, occasional lapses, and anxiety-producing unknowns, each participant leaves with a set of individualized healthful habits and ideas that allow them to overcome setbacks and continue moving ahead.

ne of the most important to-do items in any new year is to take control of personal paperwork to get your affairs in order. Often, however, this daunting goal gets nothing more than lip service year after year, with no resolution.

Fewer than half of seniors over age 55 have a will in place, according to Forbes.com. Whether creating or updating a will, or organizing other personal financial documents, these unsavory tasks can be intimidating, overwhelming and even depressing to accomplish. But they are necessary, especially for the sake of your loved ones.

Here are some helpful ways you can resolve to finally check off many of your goals to get your legal documents in order: Advance care planning, in case of a health emergency that lands you in the hospital, is imperative. According to the National Institutes on Aging, this includes putting all important papers in one place and telling a close family member or friend where to find them. This designated person should have important contact information, such as your lawyer if you have one, your financial institution, doctor, and insurance company, as well as copies of health insurance cards. Doing so allows for your preferences concerning your personal health care, including making arrangements on your behalf, to be legally carried out with ease. A step-by-step guide to advance care planning, “Getting Your Affairs in Order: Advance Care Planning,” is available in PDF form at the National Institutes on Aging website, nia.nih.gov.

Additionally, there are several designations you can choose to empower someone to act on your behalf concerning other legal matters. These include: • A “general power of attorney.”

This designation allows you to entrust a person to act on your behalf, but such power ends if you become unable to make your own decisions.

• A “durable power of attorney.”

Contrary to the general power designation, this gives someone chosen in advance the power to legally act for you should the

scenario arise where you’re unable to make your own decisions, as in a medical emergency.

• An “advanced directive” allows for your wishes to be carried out regarding your health care should you become unresponsive.

When difficult moments arise, having these directives in place can make decisions easier for your loved ones and family.

Of course, a will or trust allows you to name the person or people you want to inherit your property and money when you die. If you already have one, be sure to update it in case your beneficiaries or finances have changed. There are many ways to create a will online using free software or templates; just be sure to have it notarized and signed by two witnesses to make it legal. Notaries are available at most financial institutions, often without making an appointment.

According to the National Institute on Aging, other information and critical documents to have organized and accessible to the person with power of attorney include your Social Security number; the place and date of your birth; the location of your birth certificate; and certificates of marriage, divorce, adoption or citizenship. It will be important for them to have access to any of your work history, education, or military records, and medications you take regularly.

Additionally, it would be helpful to supply a copy of your most recent tax return, information on employer pensions, IRAs, 401(k)s, etc. and the name of your investment broker.

If you own a safety deposit box, this person should have a copy of the key, access to the deed to your home and titles to your vehicle(s).

Any debt, including credit card information and when your mortgage payments or property taxes are due, is also important for the individual with power of attorney to have.

Senior Romance Scams

M

elissa has always thought of her 73-year-old mother, Ruth, as someone who is generous and selfless, putting the needs of her now deceased husband’s ahead of hers for 49 years.

“My mom catered to my dad and us kids, always,” Melissa said.

“She’s from that generation where she had my dad’s supper on the table when he walked in the door from work, she kept up the house, took care of me and my brothers, and somehow had time to volunteer outside of the home.

“But when my dad died eight years ago, it changed everything,” she said.

Ruth became increasingly isolated as her own children were raising families of their own, and she stayed in her home more instead of going out.

“She really wouldn’t see friends.

I think she was getting depressed.

And I didn’t really pick up on it,” Melissa said.

But Melissa and her brothers, who took over certain roles their father once performed, including doing Ruth’s taxes and balancing her checkbook, began to notice a change in her finances about a year ago.

“My little brother started seeing these withdrawals from her accounts. They started off relatively small and he didn’t pry at first,” Melissa said. “But then he got very concerned, very fast.”

Ruth had begun making monthly payments to a man she met on the internet.

“My mom apparently met this good-looking, older gentleman over the computer, an online dating site, and he began seeking my mom’s affections,” Melissa said.

“So, I guess he convinced her that she needed to send him money for different things: One time it was that he needed to visit his children and didn’t have the money to travel to see them. She supposedly paid for a suit he needed to go, and some luggage. Another thing he told her he needed was his plane tickets. So right there my mom spent several thousand dollars on these tickets and luggage. And she had never even once laid eyes on this man in person.”

Ruth had become the victim of a scheme all too familiar among law enforcement officials known as “catfishing.” The term describes a romance scam in which unsuspecting people are lured into a relationship with someone who has a fake online identity, often on social media or online dating websites. According to a catfishing victims list compiled by the website bestvpn.org, New Mexico ranked third in the nation per capita.

According to the dating website Match.com, seniors 50 and older represent its fastest-growing users.

So how can you keep yourself or your loved ones safe from these deceptive scams?

Here are a few warning signs from AARP: • Does a photo of your new romantic interest look more like a model from a fashion magazine than an ordinary selfie?

• Does the person quickly want to leave the dating website

and communicate with you through email?

• Does he or she lavish you with attention?

• Does the person repeatedly promise to meet you in person but always seem to come up with an excuse not to?

If you suspect you or someone you love has been the victim of catfishing, contact local police, the state Attorney General’s office, or the FBI. *Names in this story have been changed to protect their identity.

In 2019, the Federal Trade Commission received more than 20,000 reports of romance scams.

That was up 250 percent from 2016. Total losses added up to approximately $143 million for victims. According to the FTC, the average financial losses for people over age 70 was $10,000.

So, she didn’t want to believe she fell for something like this. She’s on antidepressants now, and I think it’s helping her. We’re trying to get her the help she needs. Of course, we talked to the police and will work with the Attorney General’s Office, but who knows if she’ll get any of [the money] back. Thank God it wasn’t more than it was.”

I

f you followed the proceedings culminating in last month’s impeachment of our president, you’ve undoubtedly heard comparisons to earlier impeachment trials, including that of President Andrew Johnson in 1868. In that instance, the Senate failed by one vote to remove him from office.

New Mexico has a unique connection to that event, although we weren’t even a state at the time. The senator who cast the deciding vote in favor of acquittal was Edmund G. Ross, a Kansas Republican who later served as territorial governor of New Mexico.

Ross’s role in the Johnson impeachment is described in John F. Kennedy’s Pulitzer prize-winning book, Profiles in Courage, published

in 1956. More recently, Albuquerque historian Richard Ruddy wrote a well-researched biography, Edmund G. Ross: Soldier, Senator, Abolitionist (UNM Press, 2013), focusing largely on Ross’s time in New Mexico.

Ruddy’s book is the source of most of the information that follows.

Ross was born in Ohio in 1826. He left high school before graduating and went to work as an itinerant printer and typesetter. Although he never resumed his formal education, he became a skilled journalist, working as a reporter and editor at several Midwestern newspapers. In 1848, he married and settled down with his wife, Fannie, to raise a family that grew to include six children.

The slavery question loomed large in the political debates of the 1850s, and Ross wrote passionate editorials calling for its abolition. In 1854, he and his family, along with hundreds of other abolitionists, re-located to the then-territory of Kansas to swell the ranks of the free-soil faction there and thwart efforts to bring Kansas into the Union as a slave state. When the nation finally erupted in civil war, he enlisted in the Kansas Volunteers where he served with distinction, rising to the rank of major.

After the war he returned to Kansas and resumed his journalistic career while also remaining active in

politics. When Kansas Sen. Jim Lane committed suicide in 1866, Ross was appointed to fill his seat.

Vice President Andrew Johnson, a Tennessee Democrat who had opposed secession, was catapulted into the presidency by the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865. He was not popular with the Radical wing of the Republican Party, which controlled Congress and wanted to impose harsher conditions on the defeated South than Johnson was willing to enforce. When the Radicals believed they had enough votes in the Senate to remove him, they began impeachment proceedings.

Six Republican senators had already announced that they could not support impeachment. Johnson’s conviction hinged on Ross’s vote, but he remained noncommittal. While he did not like the pugnacious Johnson personally, or agree with his policies, he saw the Republicans’ tactics as an unconstitutional attempt by Congress to usurp the authority of the executive branch. When the roll was called, he voted ‘Not Guilty.’ That ended the drive to remove Johnson, and also Ross’s political career. For his act of conscience Ross was vilified, threatened, denounced as a traitor, and falsely accused of accepting a bribe. At the next election he was soundly defeated. Disgusted with the Republicans, he quit the party and became a Democrat.

He struggled along in Kansas for another decade, publishing a succession of small, independent newspapers, but his impeachment vote continued to dog him. Finally, depressed and exhausted, Ross accepted a friend’s invitation to come to Albuquerque for a visit in the fall of 1881. He was apparently smitten with New Mexico, as so many others have been, and saw it as a land of opportunity where, at the age of 55, he might make a fresh start. Several of Ross’s old acquaintances had already made the move. One was fellow newspaper man J. G. Albright, publisher of the Albuquerque Democrat, who offered Ross a job. The following year, after

he was comfortably established, he was joined by Fannie and their two younger children.

The 1880s were heady times in New Mexico. The Acheson, Topeka and Santa Fe—a railroad Ross had helped to launch back in Kansas before the Civil War—had extended its tracks across the territory. New mining districts were opening up. Albuquerque and Las Vegas, N.M., were becoming important commercial centers.

Speculators were buying up land—or stealing it. Political corruption was rife, and honest journalists had their hands full trying to expose it. Ross, as usual, found himself in the thick of the battle.

When Grover Cleveland became president in 1885—the first Democrat elected to that office in 28 years— Ross saw his chance to re-enter the political arena. Cleveland, like Ross, was a reformer, determined to clean up corruption in government. Supported by like-minded friends, Ross managed to secure an appointment to the territorial governorship.

As governor, Ross took on the powerful Santa Fe Ring, whose members were fraudulently acquiring enormous landholdings. To curb these abuses, Ross proposed the establishment of a Court of Private Land Claims, but it did not become a reality until 1891, after he was out of office. He championed progressive innovations like free public schools and large-scale irrigation projects. He was also an early advocate for women’s suffrage and women’s rights. One of his most significant accomplishments was the establishment of three public universities: the College of Agricultural and Mechanical Arts in Las Cruces (now NMSU), the School of Mines in Socorro (now New Mexico Tech), and the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

He left office in 1889, and after a stint as editor of the Deming Headlight, retired to live out his days at his son’s adobe house on Barelas Road in Albuquerque. He died in 1907, and is buried next to Fannie in their family plot in Albuquerque’s Fairview Cemetery.

The reports have been very concerning, and I decided to focus the first Ask a Health Care Professional column of 2020 on e-cigarettes.

What are e-cigarettes?

E-cigarettes are devices that produce aerosols for inhalation.

These devices use cartridges that contain liquid usually composed of varying amounts of nicotine, propylene glycol and flavorings, such as chocolate, mint, cherry and others.

A battery supplies the power to heat and vaporize the chemicals.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), e-cigarettes are known by several different names, including e-cigs, vapes, e-hookahs, vape pens and electronic nicotine delivery systems. Although they may look like

regular cigarettes or cigars, they can also look like other common items, such as pens or USB flash drives.

Why should I be concerned about e-cigarettes for myself or my family members?

According to the American Lung Association, use of e-cigarettes, or vaping, is highly addictive.

Some of the pods that are available for e-cigarettes may contain as much nicotine as an entire pack of cigarettes. Cartridges may also contain other toxins and cancercausing substances, including formaldehyde and acrolein, which can cause irreversible lung damage.

Currently, not a lot is known about the long-term health effects of using e-cigarettes; however, the CDC reports that some patients who used e-cigarettes and developed lung conditions experienced cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, fever, or abdominal pain.

The symptoms, which developed over a few days to several weeks, did not appear to be caused by a lung infection.

How widespread is the use of e-cigarettes in the United States?

According to the CDC, almost 3% of adults in the U.S. used e-cigarettes in 2017. Of greater concern, however, is that youth are much more likely than adults to use e-cigarettes. In 2019, more than 5 million middle and high school students in the U.S. used e-cigarettes in the prior 30 days, including 10.5% of middle school students and 27.5% of high school students.

How can lungs be injured?

The primary purpose of the lungs is to extract oxygen from the air we breathe and excrete carbon dioxide that is generated by the body. To do that, the lungs have several hundred million small sacs of tissue called alveoli. Alveoli are very delicate and thin, with the cells that line them being only 25 nanometers (one billionth of a meter). It’s been estimated that the aggregate surface area of two human lungs is about the same as a tennis court.

Over time, exposure to inhaled toxins damages those alveoli by breaking down their walls, making them less efficient in extracting oxygen and moving air in and out.

Unlike other tissues and organs in the human body that can heal and regenerate quite well, alveoli do not

heal once they are damaged. The surface area available decreases and does not recover.

How much of a concern are e-cigarettes?

Unfortunately, that is not currently clear. In 2019, the CDC reported more than 2,200 cases of lung injury and more than 40 deaths associated with vaping. The CDC continues to work with state and local health agencies to characterize and classify cases and their relationship to use of e-cigarettes. If you are concerned about potential health risks, the CDC recommends that you consider refraining from the use of e-cigarettes or vaping products until more is known.

2020 Skiing For Seniors

ew Mexico ski resorts are known for their panoramic views, great powder and relatively inexpensive prices compared with other parts of the nation. With some of our snowy summits over 13,000 feet and 300 days of annual sunshine, it’s no wonder people flock to the state to hit the slopes every ski season.

According to the National Ski Areas Association, more than 1.25 million people age 55 and older ski and snowboard. Whether you’re an avid slalom-level skier or you like to stick to the “bunny slopes,” New Mexico has a variety of programs

and discounts for seniors who want to get out and enjoy adventure at any of our local resorts.

It appears this year’s conditions may be ideal, too, if early snowfall in November and Farmer’s Almanac estimates prove accurate indicators.

The almanac is the weather forecasting bible that has most accurately predicted weather trends since the 18th century; it’s a book many of the ski areas rely upon to predict the ski season’s precipitation.

Stephen Trask, director of marketing at Ski Santa Fe, said the resort’s season started with some good powder and has a promising forecast: “Until the snow is on the ground, of course, we can’t make any real predictions.

But the outlook for snow seems to be in line with the Farmers’ Almanac so far,

and we’ve had some good winter storms already.”

The almanac, which claims 80 percent accuracy, is predicting in 2020 that “the worst of the bitterly cold winter conditions will affect areas east of the Rockies all the way to the Appalachians. The Pacific Northwest and Southwest should see near-normal precipitation.”

Before heading out, keep in mind that ski lessons can be a beneficial practice, since the sport is considered a moderate- to highlyvigorous physical activity. While it has many advantages for seniors, including physical and emotional health benefits, safety precautions should be taken. A recent article posted at FitAfterFifty.com recommends that seniors gradually increase their exercise regimen before pounding the powder, focusing on strengthening their back, leg and core muscles.This will help prevent unintentional injuries.

Some of the many benefits of skiing include improved memory and cognitive skills. It can also improve mood due to happiness

hormones released from exercise and exposure to vitamin D from the sun, something our clear New Mexico skies offer in spades.

According to the article, one can expect to burn up to 3,000 calories with a full day of skiing, an aerobic exercise that increases cardiovascular endurance.

Experts often advise taking a lesson even if you’re not a beginner.

Ski Santa Fe is offering a six-week season skier program for seniors age 50+ starting January 6 on Mondays for three hours each. “These lessons are where seniors can get out on the slopes and meet people and improve their ability levels,” Trask said. The cost is $175, not including skis and lift. “Starting in January there will be women’s and men’s programs in the mornings that are age specific and cater to a wider range of abilities,” he said.

“Also, we offer free tickets for ages 72+ called a Freedom Pass, if you don’t mind waiting in line for a few minutes to get your lift ticket.

It’s $89 otherwise to just hit the slopes,” he said.

Additionally, Ski Santa Fe offers other discounts for senior skiers: $64 for a full day for ages 62-71, and a season Silver Pass for $529, with no blackout dates.

Experts recommend that all skiers, regardless of ability, always wear a helmet, and to check their equipment for signs of wear or aging before going skiing. As technology has improved, so has equipment.

IRS Introduces A Tax Form Created For Older Taxpayers

ear Savvy Senior, A couple months back I read that the IRS will be offering a new senior-friendly tax form this tax season that will be easier to use. What can you tell me about this?

Paper Filer Dear Filer, It’s true. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has created a new federal income-tax form specifically designed for senior taxpayers, age 65 and older, that should make filing a little easier this year, particularly those who don’t file electronically. Here’s what you should know.

Form 1040-SR Created by the 2018 Bipartisan Budget Act, the new two-page simplified federal income tax form is called the 1040-SR. Similar in style to the old 1040-EZ form that the IRS discontinued last year, the

new 1040-SR has larger print and better color contrast that makes it easier to read.

the tax schedules available to those using the standard form 1040 may also be used with the 1040-SR.

In addition, it also includes a chart to help older taxpayers calculate their standard deduction, which may help ensure that fewer seniors neglect to take the additional standard deduction that they are entitled to. For 2019, the additional deduction for those 65 or older or the blind is $1,300.

You should also know that the 1040-SR doesn’t put a limit on interest, dividends, or capital gains, nor does it cap overall income like the old 1040-EZ form did. But, if you have to itemize because of state and local taxes or charitable giving, then you will not be able to use the new Form 1040-SR.

The 1040-SR form also has specific lines for retirement income streams such as Social Security benefits, IRA distributions, pensions and annuities, along with earned income from work wages and tips.

And, it allows a child tax credit for seniors who are still taking care of a dependent child or grandchild.

Paper Filing Advantage Seniors who use tax-preparation software to file their taxes will be able to generate a 1040-SR, but the new form will provide the most significant benefit to taxpayers who still fill out and file their returns on paper.

Last year, about 88 percent of the 153 million individual federal tax returns filed to the IRS were filed electronically. About 5 percent were prepared using tax software, then printed out and mailed to the agency, while about 7 percent were prepared on paper.

To use the new 1040-SR tax form for the 2019 filing year, taxpayers, including both spouses if filing jointly, must be at least age 65 before Jan. 1, 2020. You also don’t have to be retired to use the form – older workers can use it too. But early retirees (younger than 65) cannot use 1040-SR. CASA (City of Albuquerque Senior Affairs) Kitchen Looking for volunteers to support a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen that prepares food for seniors in the community. Hours are anytime between 4:00a.m. – 12p.m, Monday through Friday.

Participate in preparation and distribution of food. Follow proper procedures in handling of food, portion control, sanitation, nutritional requirements and safety procedures. Some food handling experience is preferable; however volunteers will be trained for areas of help where are needed. Most volunteer activities will involve food prep (slicing, dicing, serving, and packaging) and kitchen sanitation (wiping, sweeping, mopping and dish washing). The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) Advisory Council Needs members to join its efforts in promoting awareness and educating the community about

Foster Grandparent volunteers must be willing to serve an average of 20 hours per week and must be able to pass a background check, physical, and tuberculosis test. Foster Grandparent volunteers serve one-on-one with children, working with them to build their social and emotional development as well as help improve their literacy skills. Volunteers receive mileage reimbursement, supplemental liability insurance, meals while on duty, pre-service and monthly trainings, and recognition throughout the year. ramatic dietary changes at the start of a new year can be an unsustainable challenge.

Willpower is connected to a host of biochemical processes within the body that render most people unable to stick to new positive dietary habits.

Consider the intelligent and successful people you know that struggle with diet-related health issues or obesity. If reversing dangerous cholesterol and blood sugar levels were comfortable, the leading cause of death in the United States would not be heart disease. Changing dietary behaviors is so difficult that, like any other major challenge, it requires planning over time. Loading up on sweets and simple carbohydrates in November and December set the stage for failure in January. To stick the landing with your new year goals, be patient!

The percentage of proteins (hemoglobin) covered in sugar (glycated) indicates the A1C number. This process of hemoglobin glycation occurs over time, usually two to three months. These experiences are sensual memories stored and transferred into behaviors, such as an increased tendency to eat more sugar. Other factors, including stress, poor sleep, and a lack of exercise, can trigger cortisol fluctuations that affect blood glucose, causing insulin imbalances.

Daily exercise can play a remarkable role in positively changing blood levels of both cholesterol and sugar.

Protein, fat, and fiber slow the release of sugar into the bloodstream.

The process is simple, begin by reducing dietary sugar and simple carbohydrates. Every meal that contains these ingredients must partner with a protein, fat, and fiber.

Changing snacks from donuts into guacamole with celery will create a new learning record of foods that satisfy. New memories are formed by recognizing new fuel sources. Over time (weeks usually), new craving patterns emerge. Working with every meal, drink, and snack is the key to success in this program. High-calorie beverages on the side will mitigate most benefits from other positive

dietary changes. Sugary beverage consumption can be the most challenging change for many people.

Massive blood sugar surges mustn’t trigger insulin spikes. Any insulin trigger will lead to intense cravings for something sugary to bring along balance. The best way to succeed for a good meal plan in January is to gift yourself healthy proteins, fats, and fiber in place of sugars and simple carbohydrates.

To achieve better results with new year goals, expect to move through the process gracefully. There is no need to totally restrict all sugar and simple carbohydrates. Instead focus on pairing them or replacing them with protein, fat, and fiber (almonds, grass fed/free-range meats, eggs, avocado, vegetables) to slow down blood sugar levels. Changing behaviors of consumption reeducates the brain on foods that not only bring energy but also satisfaction.

In colder temperatures, older adults run a higher risk of health problems related to the weather.

Upper respiratory infections, including influenza, can result in pneumonia in seniors.

Recommended flu vaccines, while not always effective in preventing the illness, can reduce the severity of the symptoms and protect against complications. If you are 65 or older and have chronic health problems such as heart disease, respiratory problems, kidney disease, diabetes, anemia, or any disease that weakens the body’s immune system, consult your health care professional.

High fevers should result in postponement of the flu shot; if you are allergic to eggs, the shot should be avoided altogether. Keep in mind that influenza vaccines are only effective for one year and that the virus varies annually. So, it is necessary to get a flu shot every year. Once injected, it takes about

two weeks to develop full immunity. A shot in January can still offer protection against a late winter outbreak.

Cold temperatures can also place stress and strain on your heart. The heart has to work harder to maintain body heat, resulting in potential high blood pressure.

This stress can activate our sympathetic nervous system, releasing the hormone catecholamine and speeding up the heart rate. This is why heart attack rates rise in cold weather.

Don’t forget about skin exposure, too. Hypothermia is defined by a body temperature below 95 degrees. Seniors are at special risk because they may have limited ability to communicate, impaired mobility, less subcutaneous fat, and a diminished ability to sense temperature.

Symptoms of hypothermia include shivering, cold skin that is pale or ashy, lack of coordination, mental confusion, slowed reactions, shallow breathing, slow heart rate, weakness and sleepiness.

Don’t rely on shivering alone as a warning sign; seniors tend to shiver less or not at all as their body temperature drops. Call 911 if you think someone has hypothermia.

Frostbite can cause damage to the skin and progress with damage to the bone. It usually affects the nose, ears, cheeks, chin, fingers and toes. Frostbite in worst cases results in loss of limbs. Seniors with heart disease and other

circulation problems are at risk.

Prevention includes covering up all parts of the body when going outside. If the skin turns red, dark or starts to hurt, it’s time to go inside right away.

Symptoms of frostbite include skin that’s white, ashy or grayishyellow; feels hard or waxy, or is numb. If frostbite occurs, place frostbitten parts of the body in warm (not hot) water, and call for medical help immediately. A person with frostbite may also have hypothermia, so check for those symptoms, too.

Falls are among the top causes of accidental death in seniors and can decrease life expectancy. Proper footwear is key to fall prevention.

Gum-soled shoes without heels are recommended. Be aware of black ice on sidewalks and driveways.

Only travel on clear pathways, with hands free in case of a stumble.

Non-bulky, layered clothing is best to keep warm.
