ew research shows you can stop a cold in its tracks if you take one simple step with a new device when you first feel a cold coming on.

Colds start when cold viruses get in your nose. Viruses multiply fast. If you don’t stop them early, they spread and cause misery.

But scientists have found a quick way to kill a virus. Touch it with copper. Researchers at labs and universities agree, copper is “antimicrobial.” It kills microbes, such as viruses and bacteria, just by touch.

That’s why ancient Greeks and Egyptians used copper to purify water and heal wounds. They didn’t know about viruses and bacteria, but now we do.

Researchers say a tiny electric charge in microbe cells gets short-circuited by the high conductance of copper. This destroys the cell in seconds.

Tests by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) show germs die fast on copper. Some hospitals switched to copper touch surfaces, like faucets and doorknobs. This cut the spread of MRSA and other illnesses by over half, and saved lives.

The strong evidence gave inventor Doug Cornell an idea.

When he felt a cold coming on he fashioned a smooth copper probe and rubbed it gently in his nose for 60 seconds.

“It worked!” he exclaimed.

“The cold went away completely.” It worked again every time he felt a cold coming on. He has never had a cold since.

He asked relatives and friends to try it. They said it worked every time. So he patented CopperZap™ and put it on the market.

Soon hundreds of people had tried it. Nearly 100 percent said the copper stops their colds if used within 3 hours of the first sign. Even up to 2 days, if they still get the cold it is milder and they feel better.

Users wrote things like, “It stopped my cold right away,” and “Is it supposed to work that fast?”

“What a wonderful thing,” wrote Physician’s Assistant Julie.

Business owner Rosaleen says when people are sick around her she uses CopperZap morning and night. “It saved me last holidays,” she said. “The kids had colds going around, but not me.”

Mazatlan: Another Retirement Location

alk to anyone who knows Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and they’ll wax nostalgic about the 1980s, when newly built beachfront condos were dirt cheap in Nuevo Vallarta, a snowbird enclave three miles from the airport and five miles from downtown.

An analog to Nuevo Vallarta now springing in Mazatlán is the Estrella del Mar Resort, four miles from the airport and 10 miles from the Mazatlan city center.

Mazatlán (population 438,000), 200 miles north of Vallarta, has largely been overlooked as a Mexican beach destination, mostly because of the scarcity of nonstop flights, and because fares from the U.S. haven’t yet dropped.

(Southwest Airlines hasn’t begun service there yet.)

But for retirees and snowbirds searching for their place in the sun south of the border, Mazatlán’s affordability is well worth the tradeoff – and it’s definitely worth

a scouting trip this winter. Here’s what I mean: The weather: Mazatlán enjoys a moderate year-round climate, with summer highs rarely topping 91 degrees and average winter lows rarely dipping below 77. In the afternoon, onshore Pacific breezes keep you cool. Rainfall is modest, just 31 inches a year.

The golf: Estrella del Mar features a 7,015-yard, 18-hole Robert Trent Jones Jr. golf course that features six holes along the beach. The greens of Jones’s spacious palm tree-lined course recently were enlarged and regrassed with a superior salt-tolerant Bermuda varietal. The course is home to the PGA Latin American Tour and it boasts a John Jacobs Golf Academy. Best of all, it’s a steal at $75 during low season and $130 during high season.

Lodging: Las Villas, the Estrella del Mar resort’s on-site lodge, is a charmingly unpretentious three-story, 47-room hotel – the antithesis of the mega-resorts of other Mexico beach destinations.

I

have seen advertisements for dietary and herbal supplements. What are they?

A dietary supplement is a substance that is taken orally in addition to the food and drinks that are consumed for nourishment. Supplements are not pharmaceutical medications; they are labeled as dietary supplements and may consist of herbs, protein or amino acid formulations, vitamins, minerals or other substances.

Are dietary and herbal supplements regulated by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA)?

Yes, they are regulated by the FDA. It is important to note, however, that the FDA regulations applied to supplements are different from those used for pharmaceutical medications.

Under the 1938 Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, the FDA has the authority to oversee the safety of medications. In general, the FDA considers any new drug or medication to be unsafe until proven otherwise with extensive clinical trials. The FDA must approve any new drug before it can be sold legally in the United States.

Supplements, on the other hand, are regulated under the 1994 Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), which puts supplements under the same category as food.

Supplements are considered safe unless proven otherwise.

Under the act, manufacturers and distributors of dietary supplements and ingredients are prohibited from marketing products that are adulterated or misbranded. These manufacturers and distributors are also responsible for evaluating the safety and labeling of their products before marketing to ensure that they meet all the requirements of the DSHEA. The FDA is responsible for taking action against any adulterated or misbranded dietary supplement product after it reaches the market.

What else should I know if I am considering taking a supplement?

The most important thing to know and understand is that supplements are not intended to treat, diagnose, prevent or cure diseases. In the United States, these types of claims are legitimately made only for drugs that the FDA has approved to be sold.

Another important thing to understand is that some supplements, especially herbal supplements, can interact with prescription medications. Those interactions may increase the risk for adverse reactions or cause the medicine to be less or more effective. Just because a supplement or herbal is labeled as “natural” does not necessarily mean it is safe.

Absolutely. It is very important to let your doctor know if you are

currently taking — or planning to take — any supplements, especially if you have any medical conditions or if you are taking medications.

Your doctor can help to determine if there might be potentially unsafe interactions between your medications and supplements or herbals. She can also let you know if supplements might affect any medical conditions you have.

What can I do to ensure that I get all the nutrients my body needs?

The best approach is to eat a balanced, healthy diet, with the right amount of calories for your activity level, which can include fruits, vegetables, meats, beans, grains, and dairy.

Where can I get more information on dietary supplements and herbals?

The website www.nutrition. gov has a lot of good information on general nutrition as well as resources on dietary supplements and herbals. Remember to eat right and exercise.

Indian Arts Research Center, One Of The City Different’s Hidden Gems

I

t’s a timeless adage: “When life hands you lemons, you make lemonade.”

And so it is for one of the largest collections of Native American artwork. An antique Zuni water jar broke during a Santa Fe dinner party in 1922, so the guests of Elizabeth Shepley Sergeant created the Pueblo Pottery Fund.

The fund financed the restoration of the jar, bought more pieces, and in 1925 the mission was expanded to include other artwork – baskets and jewelry, for example. The fund was then renamed the Indian Arts Fund, and in 1978 a permanent home for the collection – this time christened the Indian Arts Research Center – was constructed on the campus of the School for Advanced Research in Santa Fe. Today that collection has 12,000 pieces.

Kurnit also can explain the evolution of the School for Advanced Research, which started life as the School for American Archaeology in 1907.

Today the school has a wider mission that includes social science and humanities. It’s a place where Native American artists and writers receive residential fellowships to work on their creative projects.

Because of that collection of artwork, today’s Native artists can reach back into their heritage and, at times, complete projects initially started by their ancestors. The story of Ulysses Reid is an example.

“Ulysses Reid’s grandfather was a painter named Henate,” Kurnit says. Henate, also known as Andres Galvan, was a tribal member of Zia Pueblo. “Historically at Zia Pueblo, men would paint pottery while the women formed it.” That division of labor worked for Henate until his wife passed away, leaving him without the traditional “canvas.”

“Without pottery to paint, Henate began creating works on paper,” Kurnit says. “Currently, the IARC

holds nearly 200 of these paintings.”

Ulysses Reid was a fellow at SAR in 2009, and, Kurnit says, Reid was able to breathe life back into one of his grandfather’s designs by painting it on a clay bowl.

The importance of story telling in Native American cultures surfaces in several artists descriptions.

Gordon Lee Johnson was the Indigenous Writer in Residence at SAR during the summer of 2017. He is a Cahuilla/Cupeno Native from the Pala Indian Reservation of north San Diego County, CA. He holds a master’s degree in creative writing and won numerous awards while writing columns and features for the Riverside Press-Enterprise.

Johnson’s time at SAR was spent working on his next novel, “Dog Eyes,” which he expects to complete in 2018. Johnson calls “Dog Eyes” a “rez-noir” novel dealing with real-life Native concerns. He enjoys writing mysteries because, “mystery has room

to tell a good story.”

The story of Acoma member Loren Aragon is another fascinating tale, a migration from an Arizona Statetrained mechanical engineer to fashion designer. Aragon won first place in the 2016 Santa Fe Indian Market Designer Challenge in the adult contemporary category. In his online video, Aragon explains that “couture fashion allows me to capture ideas predominately influenced by the pottery culture and traditional dress of my Acoma people.”

He approaches pottery culture as a puzzle, a mystery, that he and his wife fit into greeting cards, jewelry, and evening wear. Aragon’s art, he says, serves as a connection to his cultural and spiritual identity.

The artists and writers at SAR often give presentations about their work, and Kurnit says one does not need to be a member of the organization to attend. SAR is at 660 Garcia Street, and visitors are expected to take steps to protect the pottery in the massive collection. If another broken bowl leads to another 12,000 pieces, the artists might need to find another place to continue their stories.

s we come into a new year, what better way to celebrate 2018 than with healthy, delicious foods? A large number of older adults no longer make resolutions, but many of us do look back on the previous year and determine that we’d like to be healthier. That often means trying to shed a few extra pounds. Below are two great recipes that won’t make you feel deprived.

The first recipe is a variation of a beloved New Mexican classic, red chile carne adovada. This melt-in-your-mouth recipe, created by my brother, Ed Otero, is incredibly tender and great for dinner. But it could also be served alongside eggs with papas and beans for breakfast or brunch. You could even serve his carne adovada as tacos, stuffed sopapillas or wrapped in a tortilla with cheese and other fixings for delicious burritos. Otero, who has always been health conscious, uses dark meat chicken, which makes this dish flavorful, as well as calorieand budget-friendly.

-4 quarts of chile pods (Clean, rinse chile, then soak chile pods over night. Blend and strain.)

-1/4 teaspoon cumin -3 garlic cloves -Salt to taste Directions: Cut chicken into one-inch cubes. Mix all ingredients and marinate in the refrigerator overnight.

The next day, preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place ingredients in 9- by 11-inch baking pan. Cook for two hours. The carne adovada is done when the mixture stops bubbling.

Ingredients: -1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil -1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped -2 medium ribs celery, finely chopped

-1/4 cup tomato paste -6 large ripe tomatoes, peeled and chopped -3 cups chicken stock -Fresh ground black pepper Optional garnishes: -Fresh basil leaves, cut into thin ribbons -Grated parmesan cheese -Red pepper flakes -Tomato concassé (peeled, seeded and chopped tomato)

Note: My addition would include a grilled cheese sandwich. I’m sure there’s a light version out there somewhere. There are dozens of grilled cheese sandwich recipes on Foodnetwork.com.

Directions: Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the onion, celery, carrot and basil. Season with salt, cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened but not colored, five to seven minutes.

Add the garlic and cook for about one minute, until aromatic. Stir in the tomato paste and cook for two minutes, then add the tomatoes and chicken stock, and season with salt and pepper. Increase the heat to high and bring to a simmer, then reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes to break down the tomatoes and blend the flavors.

Working in batches, pour the soup into a blender and blend until smooth (or leave part of it chunky for one of the variations). Return the soup to a new pan. Spoon into bowls and serve with your choice of garnish.

he city of Albuquerque has some advice for seniors who are noticing symptoms of aging: Get up out of that chair and exercise! Go dancing! Hit the weight room! Take a hike, or check out Adapted Aquatics!

Membership has other benefits as well. Senior centers also serve meals for extremely reasonable fees. Some seniors have been known to workout, eat breakfast, workout again, and then eat lunch.

“There are some people who have never worked out before and our staff and volunteers show them how to get started,” Mahoney says. “And some come in for physical therapy or with doctor’s notes. Some are recovering from surgery.”

If mobility is a problem, consider participating in Adapted Aquatics, taught at the University of New Mexico Therapeutic Pool. The pool’s temperature is 92 degrees, and the program is intended to increase joint mobility and develop strength. Preregistration is required.

Transportation to UNM is provided from all senior centers for 50 cents for the MondayWednesday-Friday classes. A $12 monthly donation is required for the three-times-a-week program.

Other classes meet Monday and Friday or Tuesday and Thursday, and the fee is an $8 monthly donation.

Catalogs of exercise and fitness options are available at all Senior Centers in Albuquerque.

The headquarters for the Sports and Fitness Program is 3351 Monroe NE, the Palo Duro 50Plus Sports and Fitness Center.

WISDOM KEEPERS The senior centers are managed under the Department of Senior Affairs. Jorja Armijo-Brasher is the director, and she says seniors are getting more fit every day.

In addition to weight training, aerobics and yoga programs, she says dancing is a huge part of the city’s exercise offerings.

“There is a group that is totally committed to dancing,” she says.

“They know the schedule and they take advantage of it.” Friday afternoon the dancing is at Barelas Senior Center (714 7th St. SW), and Sundays it’s at North Valley (3825 4th NW).

Armijo-Brasher also is an advocate for New Mexico’s Senior Olympics, scheduled for July 1822, 2018. That passion manifests in the theme for this year’s Sports and Fitness Catalog, “The Road for Gold Starts Here.” Seniors compete in 17 different events, and the city’s dedication to the

Olympics resulted in the 2019 National Senior Games coming to Albuquerque June 14-19, 2019.

Thousands of senior athletes coming to Albuquerque certainly will have an economic impact on the city, but Armijo-Brasher sees something more. “I am fond of calling our seniors our ‘wisdom keepers,’” she says, “and the healthier they stay, the more they contribute to our community,” she says.

Brad Winter is the kind of community contributor ArmijoBrasher is talking about. In addition to serving on the City Council, he was a pole vaulting silver medalist in the Senior Olympics.

FIFTY ‘N FIT Whether you are 50, 97, or anywhere in between, George and Pat Fraser might have the answers for your physical issues. They are the owners of Fifty ‘n Fit, which actually is two businesses – one specializing in fitness and one providing physical therapy. They are both on Menaul, and patients of any age may be treated on the therapy side.

However, you must be at least 50 years of age to become a member on the fitness side which has about 230 members.

“We see all kinds of issues,” says George Fraser, “and everyone who comes here is given a program designed specifically for him or her.”

The Frasers are both physical therapists. Originally from Massachusetts, George was working for Presbyterian Health Care in 1978 when he met Pat, a physical therapy intern from Albuquerque. The Frasers bought (continued on next page)

“About 60 percent of our fitness members are female, and osteoporosis is a problem for many women,” George Fraser says. “It needs to be dealt with.”

Because of their medical backgrounds, he says, the Frasers don’t just treat the symptoms of what ails you, “we try to figure out the root cause.” And after the

diagnosis, the Frasers and staff try to educate their clients about how they can manage their own health.

Lectures are free to the public, and previous classes include: Osteoporosis – Exercise Dos and Don’ts; Balance Training and Fall Prevention; Quickness and Agility Training, and everyone’s personal favorite Preventing Identity Theft.

Fitness classes include: Pilates/ Stretch; Aerobics, which involves 30 minutes of aerobic activity, 15 minutes of strength training, and 15 minutes of stretching; Balance; Yoga; Tai Chi; Spin/ Treadmill Interval class, and more.

“Our business is nonthreatening, very comfortable, and very clean,” George says.

Members pay a monthly fee, not annual, and there is no contract.

“We want to teach our patients so well they become independent of us.”

NEW HEART Another option for personal fitness is New Heart for Wellness, 601 Lomas NE. Omar Negrete,

director of cardiac rehabilitation at New Heart, says 70 percent of the organization’s members are referred by a cardiologist or primary care physician.

“But many are referred to start a structed exercise program and make some positive lifestyle changes,” Negrete says.

Those lifestyle changes may include giving up smoking, losing weight, and starting to exercise.

“In my experience,” he says, “the most difficult recommendation is maintaining any change made. Any lifestyle change is difficult and if not done with longterm success in mind, they are very difficult to maintain.”

New Heart has more than 600 members, and approximately 200 are cardiac rehab and medically supervised members.

Members may take advantage of mindfulness and stress skills classes, too.

Lifestyle coaches teach techniques for adding mindfulness to everyday tasks, Negrete says.

If you have a pest control company servicing your home, ask them what products they are using. If they are using synthetic pyrethroid pesticides, ask them to switch to EPA exempt pesticides, which are considered safe by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Pesticides with any “signal word,” including “danger,” “warning” or “caution,” are not safe. Keep in mind that most pest control companies will say the pesticides they use are safe.

If you visit any store, commercial establishment or government building routinely, ask if their facilities are regularly sprayed for bugs, and if so, ask what is being used. If they are using toxic pesticides with signal words, then ask them to consider switching to EPA exempt pesticides or to at least notify their customers and visitors before any toxic pesticides are used so you can avoid the building for a few days.

A Smile Is Good Medicine

very January, many of us make New Year’s resolutions. Most of these include promises to eat right, exercise more and lose weight.

All are noble, if not a bit self-centered.

Why not, instead, choose to resolve to do something that will not only improve your health but also potentially leave a positive impact on others? All it takes is a smile.

Guillaume Duchenne, a 19th-century French physician widely acknowledged as one of the founders of modern neurology studied the effects of smiling.

The “Duchenne smile,” also known as a genuine smile, has been shown to bring about health benefits more powerful than any other smile.

By definition, this type of smile involves muscles in the mouth, cheeks and eyes. The zygomatic major muscle is the principle muscle that pulls up the corners of the mouth resulting in a smile.

However, the Duchenne smile utilizes

certain other muscles of the face. When the orbicularis oculi muscles contract, your eyes are pulled into a squint, making for wrinkles at the bridge of the nose and around the eyes’ outside edges.

Duchenne said that smiles involving the orbicularis oculi muscles were “authentic expressions of joy.”

Smiling can stimulate your immune system, lower your blood pressure, decrease stress levels and even help with overall success due to chemical reactions that occur in the body. Smiling releases endorphins, which are natural painkillers.

The more endorphins your brain releases, the more your body can combat illnesses.

Smiling also releases serotonin, a neurotransmitter found in the brain and in the gastrointestinal tract. Depression has been associated with lower levels of serotonin. Reshaping our mouth from a frown to a smile literally sparks serotonin release, dramatically shifting our mood from negative to positive.

A study from the University of Kansas monitored a group of 169 participants who were asked to make one of three facial expressions: neutral, forced smile (accomplished by holding a chopstick in the mouth), or a genuinely smile (a full Duchenne smile). Heart rates were monitored while placing the participants under increased levels of stress (i.e. noise, putting hands in cold water, etc.).

They discovered that while both the forced and genuine smiles reduced the

body’s stress response and lowered heart rate and blood pressure significantly, the genuine smiling participants recovered from the stress at much faster rates.

Science demonstrates that smiling is also a natural reflex reaction to happiness and pleasing settings. This means that the very act of smiling makes you happy - and being happy makes you smile. In this way, smiles are contagious. Seeing someone smile can actually excite many neuronal pathways in the brain. These areas include the visual cortex and the premotor cortex that controls the muscles involved in smiling, as well as

the somatosensory areas that allows one to “feel” the joy of the witnessed smile.

The neurons that fire when we observe and when we participate in an action are called mirror neurons.

Smiling can also make a person more attractive to other people. It has also been shown to be associated with higher job success and overall happiness.

The famous French poet and novelist Victor Hugo has been quoted as saying, “Smiling is the sun that drives winter from the human face.” As this new year begins, let us all try to smile more. After all, smiling does a body good.

The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) Advisory Council Needs members to join its efforts in promoting awareness and educating the community about FGP and senior issues.

The Actors Workshop will be held on Saturdays from 10a.m.-1p.m. starting February 10th. This class is open to all students who take the craft of acting seriously and want to be grounded in technique. Through exercises and improvisation, the student will investigate Physical Action, The Truth of the Moment, Script Analysis, Scene Preparation and actual scene work and all the tools needed to successful fulfillment of character. The workshop is designed to take the mystery out of acting and bring the craft down to simple, easy to follow rules that are rewarding and fun.

The Directors Corner will be offered Saturdays from 2:00p.m.-5:00p.m. starting February 10th. This class is open to all students who want to be in charge. Students in the workshop will be working hands on with other students either from the Directing workshop or from the Actor’s workshop and will prepare short scenes for presentation on the last day of class.

Directors who show promise may be offered the opportunity to work with main stage directors at ALT as assistant directors, with the future opportunity to direct on the main stage.

Finally ALT is starting a theatre troupe specifically for artists over the age of 50.

Led by award-winning actor, director and arts educator Staci Robbins, members of the company will train together in weekly “work-outs” that include improvisation, scene study, character development, script development and rehearsal for MainStage, Readers Theatre, and touring productions. The group will develop a repertoire of classic and contemporary offerings as well as write, design and produce work developed by its members. Membership fees for the program are based on a semester-long commitment (12 weeks). The program will run January 23 - April 24th on Tuesday mornings from 10a.m.-12p.m.

otential allergen concerns have risen dramatically in my clinic over the past couple of decades. Increasing evidence supports patient reports that specific potential allergens do indeed diminish health in those with sensitivities. A growing body of research involving the role of genetics, and digestive health better explains how food sensitivities result in seemingly unrelated symptoms. Today, I’m here to encourage you to consider the possibility as you begin your New Year.

Removing potential allergens from your diet that might be causing poor health is an excellent start. Keeping a food journal to track exposure to potential allergens

Awareness Of Potential Allergens (see below for the list) to determine if there are links between foods you eat and negative symptoms is a way to begin. For those of you who are familiar with your allergies, read on; labels can be deceiving.

The Allergen Labeling Law The Food and Drug Administration requires allergen labeling for the ‘major eight’ allergens, responsible for 90 percent of all food allergies. The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act was developed for supplements or foods that contain a major food allergen, or proteins associated with allergens, to be appropriately labeled for consumers. The act was needed to assist consumers of food and supplement products further because allergens became both more prevalent and widely known as causes of illness. Labels were initially not clear enough for those suffering from allergen sensitivities.

What Are the Major Eight Allergens?

For example, listing “whey” as an ingredient isn’t adequate; the label must also say “milk” because whey is a byproduct of milk. If a product contains tree nuts or fish, the particular type of nut and fish/ shellfish must be labeled.

Be discriminating, and also know that there is some room for dialogue about how potent the potential allergen is. For example, some individuals may be allergic to shrimp but tolerate glucosamine made from shrimp. This could be because glucosamine derives from shrimp shells, not from shrimp flesh, which is where the protein that initiates an allergic response resides. Although allergic reactions have not been problematic with shell-derived glucosamine, it is sourced from shellfish and must be labeled as such.

The Most Asked-About Potential Allergen, Gluten Gluten is the ingredient my patients ask about most. To be extremely clear, the FDA only requires labeling for “wheat,” not gluten. This is because products labeled “gluten-free” must comply

with more specific gluten-free standards. Some product lines wisely list gluten anyway. Bottom line? If you are gluten sensitive, only buy products labeled “gluten-free.”

Cross-Contamination If you have a serious allergy, make sure to look for labeling that notes if cross contamination is a possibility. Also, be aware of “undeclared” ingredients by visiting the FDA safety recall website where you will find a host of products sited for improper labeling.

What Do Allergic Responses Look Like?

In many cases, an allergic response will happen within an hour of ingestion (or application) of a potential allergen and can last from 24-72 hours. The symptoms may appear as a rash, itching, dermatitis, wheals or digestive complaints.

Before you go about adding miracle cures to lift your health, try a critical review of all the ingredients you consume. Your problems might just be allergy related. May your new year be filled with abundant blessings.

Don’t Eat This If You’re Taking That

D

ear Savvy Senior, If the prescription label says “take with meals,” does it matter what you eat? I currently take eight different medications for various health problems and would like to know if there are any foods I need to avoid.

Over Medicated Dear Over, It depends on the medication.

Many meds should be taken with food – any food – to increase their absorption and reduce the risk of side effects. But some foods and medications can interact, reducing the medications’ effectiveness or increasing the risk of harmful side effects.

To stay safe, you should always talk to your doctor or pharmacist to learn the ins and outs of your

prescriptions, along with what foods and beverages to avoid while you’re on it. In the meantime, here are some foods you should stay away from for some commonly prescribed drugs.

tomatoes, spinach and other leafy greens, sweet potatoes, and salt substitutes that contain potassium.

ACE inhibitors raise the body’s potassium levels. Eating too many potassium rich-foods while taking an ACE inhibitor can cause an irregular heartbeat and heart palpitations.

Cholesterol Medications: If you take a certain statin drug to control high cholesterol like Liptor, Zocor, Altoprev, Mevacor, or generics atorvastatin, simvastatin or lovastatin, you should avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice.

Grapefruit can raise the level of the drug in your bloodstream and increase the risk of side effects, especially leg pain.

Blood Thinning Medications: If you are taking Coumadin, Jantoven, or the generic warfarin, you should limit kale and other greens, including broccoli, cabbage, spinach, and brussels sprouts that contain vitamin K. These foods can block the effects of these blood-thinning medications putting you at risk for developing blood clots. You also need to watch out for garlic, ginger, vitamin E and fish oil supplements because they can increase these medications bloodthinning abilities putting you at risk for excessive bleeding.

Blood Pressure Medicine: If you take an ACE inhibitor drug like Capoten, Vasotec, Monopril, Zestril and others to lower your blood pressure, you should limit food that contain potassium like bananas, oranges,

Antidepressants: If you take a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) antidepressant like Marplan, Nardil, Emsam, Parnate, or generic isocarboxazid, phenelzine, selegiline or tranylcypromine, avoid aged cheeses, chocolate, cured meats and alcoholic drinks. Thyroid Medications: If you take a medication for hypothyroidism like Synthroid, Levoxyl, Levothroid or generic levothyroxine, you should avoid eating tofu and walnuts, and drinking soymilk. All these can prevent your body from absorbing this medicine.

These medications act as sedatives, binding with the brain’s natural tranquilizers to calm you down. But when you mix these drugs with alcohol, the side effects

intensify, and can cause you to feel lightheaded, sleepy and forgetful.

Antibiotics: If you’re taking an antibiotic like Sumycin, Dynacin, Monodox, or generic tetracycline, doxycycline or minocycline, you should avoid dairy – milk, yogurt, and cheese, and calcium supplements and fortified foods – for a couple hours before and after taking the medicine. Calcium

in dairy products binds to the antibiotic and prevents your body from absorbing it, making it ineffective.
