You are constantly hearing about Stem Cells as the future of regenerative medicine. However, there is a lot of confusion of what Stem Cells are and how they can help you.

A stem cell is essentially the building block of the human body. Stem cells are capable of dividing for long periods of time; you can think of adult stem cells as our built-in repair kits, regenerating cells damaged by disease, injury and everyday wear and tear.

Stem cells are the body’s raw materials, cells from which all other cells with specialized functions are generated. Under the right conditions in the body or a laboratory, stem cells divide to form more cells called daughter cells. These daughter cells either become new stem cells (selfrenewal) or become specialized cells (differentiation) with a more specific function, such as blood cells, brain cells, heart muscle cells or bone cells. No other cell in the body has the natural ability to generate new cell types.

The Mayo Clinic, which is deeply involved in Stem Cell research, gives this description of the use for Stem Cells:

• Generate healthy cells to replace diseased cells (regenerative medicine). Stem cells can be guided into becoming specific cells that can be used to regenerate and repair diseased or damaged tissues in people. • Stem Cells are neutral cells. The body does not recognize them as foreign cells, so HLA tissue matching is not necessary.

• The Stem Cells are activated by the inflammatory response to pain

Let’s use Knees as an example for Stem Cell Therapy:

Regenerative stem cell therapy for knees has been the subject of many promising studies. Arthritis develops when the cartilage lining the joints starts to deteriorate, causing pain and limiting function. Osteoarthritis is incredibly common. Arthritis and similar conditions are a major cause of disability in the United States. Every year 600,000 Americans get a knee replacement, a number that could rise to 3 million by 2030. Until recently, treatment options were either temporary or surgical.

In numerous cases, stem cell therapy for knees is reducing pain and repairing cartilage. Researchers believe that stem cell therapy for knees works: developing into essential cartilage cells, thwarting the inflammation that can worsen arthritis, and releasing proteins called cytokines that slow degeneration of cartilage and reduce pain.

Adult stem cells maintain and heal tissues by replenishing damaged and dying cells. In some areas of the body, such as the knee, blood supply is limited, so stem cells don’t work as well as they should. Therefore, Stem Cells can be injected at the point of injury, where they appear to initiate the self-recovery process.

In the Mayo Clinic study, patients experienced improvement in both knees even though only one knee was injected. Although natural deterioration of the knee continues, at five years, those knees that are injected with stem cells are in better shape than they were before the injections.

What’s the catch? Most insurance does not cover Stem Cell therapy, even though it is significantly more cost effective than surgical procedures. Often, deductibles for surgery is less currently than Stem What Are Stem Cells (cont.)
