Annual Joy Junction Feast For The Homeless

N

ew Mexico’s largest homeless shelter for families provides a holiday meal for the hungry and homeless of the Albuquerque area.

For many years, Joy Junction has worked hard to provide a special Thanksgiving and Christmas meal for those who either have no economical means to prepare a meal themselves, or they are homeless. The Feast, as it is aptly called for both holidays, is served at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Dates for the events vary each year.

There are many in the city who may have a roof over their heads, but they do not have enough income to purchase groceries on a regular basis, let alone for a special meal. As well, there are those on the street and at various shelters who are unable to enjoy a holiday meal through any means of their own.

Each meal consists of turkey or ham, a roll, and all the trimmings, along with a piece of pie and coffee or tea.

hungry and homeless does not stop just because a holiday has arrived.

Since the larger Feast events at the convention center are held on dates other than the actual holiday, the Joy Junction shelter location also has a special meal on Thanksgiving day and Christmas day to make sure their guests enjoy a family-style meal.

To Trust, Or Not To Trust?

That Is The Question

I

s it better to have a Trust or a Will as part of your estate plan? There is no question that you need one or the other along with comprehensive powers of attorney. Before deciding, it is critical to understand how trusts and wills are different.

A Will only comes into effect upon your death. The Will gives instructions for the distribution of your property, but a probate is often necessary because probate is the only way to transfer title to real property (land) in the absence of a joint tenancy deed or transfer on death deed. A Will can contain provisions for a testamentary trust that only comes to life upon your death, and guardianship provisions for minor or disabled children. If you become incapacitated, your family must rely on a power of attorney to be able to make decisions on your behalf.

Occasionally, powers of attorney are not honored for various reasons, and a guardianship and conservatorship must be sought. Powers of attorney

die with you so only a personal representative is often appointed in a probate so the personal representative can handle your affairs after death.

Sometimes a Will is executed in conjunction with a transfer on death deed and beneficiary designations to avoid probate. Such planning must be done with care so that the beneficiary designations do not alter the terms of the Will; those designations can “undo” the instructions in the Will.

A Trust is a good estate planning tool that you can think of as a big pot that you put all of your property into, both real and personal property (residence, land, cars, stocks, etc.).

The person who signs the Trust is a Grantor. The Trust gives directions to the manager of the Trust (a Trustee), who then makes distributions from the Trust according to the instructions in the Trust. With revocable living trusts, the Grantor is usually the Trustee until he becomes incapacitated or dies. The Grantor must transfer his assets into the Trust to “fund” it so the Trustee can manage the assets. The Trustee can only manage assets that are titled in the

name of the Trust. Even if the Grantor becomes incapacitated and can no longer serve as Trustee, the successor Trustee can still pay the Grantor’s bills and make other distributions on the Grantor’s behalf from Trust assets without a power of attorney. Provided the Grantor transferred all of his assets into the Trust, a probate is usually not necessary upon death. The Trust can also provide for your surviving spouse, children, or contain special needs provisions for a disabled child or other relative. Married couples sometimes establish Trusts for the estate tax savings. Many people, single and married, prefer the security of a Trust because the family does not have to rely on a power of attorney being recognized in order for someone to take care of their financial affairs in the event of incapacity. Trusts may also be the preferred option if there is property in more than one state.

Trusts can be revocable or irrevocable. Revocable trusts can be amended, or changed, where irrevocable trusts cannot. There are different kinds of trusts for Medicaid

and VA planning, tax planning, to hold firearms or special needs planning.

Irrevocable trusts in particular must be done with extreme care to make sure you do not inadvertently cause a problem that cannot be fixed because that kind of trust cannot be changed.

Using someone else’s trust as a template for your own or downloading one from the internet is never a good solution because no two situations are the same. Fixing the problems that the wrong kind of trust causes will cost far more than paying a competent attorney to ensure the trust that is written meets your individual needs.

Deciding which tool is right for you can be complicated, and no two situations are alike. Trusts are more expensive than Wills because they direct what happens to your property while you are alive as well as after you are dead, or are more specialized.

You should consult an attorney to have your plan customized to fit your needs and ensure that your intentions will be carried out accordingly.

ovember was National Diabetes Awareness Month in the United States. On Oct. 29, 2021, President Biden signed a proclamation on National Diabetes Awareness Month in support of finding a cure for diabetes. With diabetes being so common, it’s important to discuss preventing diabetes-related complications. Development of complications can be slowed with proper management of diabetes and related conditions, such as high blood pressure. Building awareness and knowledge about screening for these complications is very important. This article is the second of two focusing on diabetes-related complications.

How does diabetes affect my nervous system?

Diabetes increases the risk for many serious health problems. The long-term complications of diabetes are related in part to damage caused by high blood glucose levels. The complications include nerve damage (also called neuropathy) and foot ulcers, which can result in amputations.

Diabetes can decrease blood flow to the feet and damage the nerves that carry sensation; this nerve damage is known as diabetic neuropathy.

Because people with neuropathy may lose their ability to sense pain, they are at increased risk for developing potentially serious foot-related complications, such as ulcers. Ulcers, or slowly healing wounds, occur because of a combination of factors, such as lack of feeling, poor circulation and uncontrolled diabetes. If these factors are present the recovery period can be long, stretching from weeks to months and sometimes resulting in bone infections or surgery with skin grafts. One of the worst outcomes is needing an amputation.

What can I do to prevent getting a foot ulcer?

Proper foot care is a priority. This requires working with your primary care provider. Your primary care provider will assess the overall status of the diabetes (i.e., how long you have had diabetes and how well controlled the diabetes is). It will be important for your health care provider to know if you’ve had an ulcer before and what sort of treatment was needed to help recover from it. There should be an examination to evaluate whether there is nerve damage (neuropathy) and how severe it is. This can be determined by examining the skin, checking for the strength of the pulses, and a simple test using a monofilament or a tuning fork to test for vibratory sensation.

There should also be a discussion about footwear. People with diabetes should wear shoes that offer ample room in the toe box and are snug but not tight.

Shoes should be customized if there are foot deformities (e.g., bunions or misshaped foot).

Additionally, toenails should be trimmed. People

with diabetes should avoid going barefoot, test the temperature before stepping into baths or on hot surfaces, and, most important, inspect their feet every day (using a mirror to look at the bottom of the foot is helpful).

How does diabetes affect my kidneys?

Diabetes can alter the normal function of the kidneys. Diabetes can cause kidney damage known as diabetic nephropathy. A combination of factors, such as uncontrolled diabetes that causes damage to the cells and the development of high blood pressure, can affect the health and function of the kidney. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure.

In fact, one out of three people with diabetes has chronic kidney disease, and 90% of adults with kidney disease do not know they have it. Over time, this can lead to chronic kidney disease and even kidney failure. When someone develops kidney failure, they will need dialysis to stay alive.

How do I find out if my kidneys have been affected?

Annual kidney disease tests can detect early signs of kidney disease so treatment can be started right away.

There are two different tests that you should ask your health care provider about: a blood test called the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and a urine test called the urine albumin to creatinine ratio (uACR). The eGFR is a way to measure how well the kidney filters the blood. Healthy kidneys normally have a high filtration rate. The eGFR can decrease with increasing age even in people without kidney disease, so it is important to review the results taking the overall health status into consideration. The uACR shows whether you have albumin in your urine. Albumin should stay in your blood, not in the urine.

Healthy kidneys have very little to no albumin in the urine. Both test results

are used in combination to determine if chronic kidney disease is present or not (there are five stages of chronic kidney disease). Please talk to your health care provider about getting both tests done every year, especially if you have diabetes.

What else can I do?

Keeping your blood pressure under control and maintaining control of the blood glucose levels are very important in preventing diabetes complications.

Furthermore, please do not smoke. Be sure to get enough exercise, get the right amount of sleep, eat a healthy diet, and engage with your health care provider to close your care gaps and improve your health outcomes.

Local Food Banks Face Higher Prices

s Christmas approaches, many families are gearing up for a celebratory dinner, while others are struggling just to feed those in their household each day. Many are, or will be, turning to food banks for assistance. However, with the rising cost of food, local food banks are having to work harder than ever to help feed New Mexicans in need this holiday season.

The Consumer Price Index reported in October that inflation jumped more than 6 percent. This was the most significant annual increase in more than 30 years, making it more difficult for families and nonprofits reliant on donor support.

Sonya Warwick is director of communications at Roadrunner Food Bank, the largest food bank in the state. She says the organization is busy year-round but that there is a greater need this year. “Both food

and distribution prices are higher,” Warwick said. “It all impacts serving seniors who are on a fixed income - from the food we purchase, to the distribution.”

Roadrunner provides more than 3.4 million pounds of food annually, serving communities across the state. Food from its warehouse gets delivered to New Mexico communities through a fleet of semi-trucks, traveling 600,000 miles a year to provide nutritious food to hundreds of partner food distribution sites. Roadrunner operators regularly take calls to connect residents with those distribution centers regardless of where they live in the state.

Warwick said donor and volunteer support make it all possible. Monetary donations, food donations, and time volunteered to prepare food are all greatly appreciated, she said.

Ron Hidalgo, executive director of the grassroots nonprofit Silver Horizons, says local food banks work in overdrive to help those in need. Established in Albuquerque in 1980, Silver Horizons is the only local organization whose mission

is to provide critical help to lowincome and in-crisis residents age 50 and older. However, today, helping a senior household often means supporting younger generations as well.

“We’re seeing more seniors request assistance because their households are increasing with their children out of work, and they are taking in their grandchildren as well. Almost 40 percent of the households Silver Horizons assists involve seniors raising their grandchildren. So, now you have two generations struggling together,” Hidalgo said.

Senior Horizons provides household bill assistance, minor home repairs, and free groceries that are available at its Senior Market, 1913 Eubank Blvd.

Holiday Lights Return To Duke City

inter in the Duke City will be particularly enchanting this year, as many public holiday traditions are anticipated to return after a year’s hiatus. While 2020’s pandemic-induced public health restrictions led to canceled festivals in Albuquerque and surrounding cities, the local magic is back this December with twinkle light tours, parades, luminarias, River of Lights, and historic decorated neighborhoods.

Here’s a guide to seeing some of Albuquerque’s brightest holiday happenings.

• River of Lights The BioPark’s River of Lights will once again brighten the holidays as the park comes to life with millions of twinkling lights, animated sculptures, and hundreds of displays.

Stroll the ultimate walk-through light show and get in the Christmas spirit with this magnificent array open nightly from 5-10 p.m. through December 30 (except Christmas eve and Christmas). • Lights, Luminarias, Farolitos The annual luminaria bus tour was awaiting confirmation as of deadline for this story. However, you can still hop in your car and make the trek to usher in the holiday spirit on Christmas Eve: Drive or stroll through historic Old Town, where the plaza transforms into a holiday wonderland filled with hundreds of luminarias. Then, just walking distance south of Old Town, drive down San Pasquale Ave. SW to visit the Country Club area, where the entire neighborhood and the Albuquerque Country Club will also look magical among luminarias.

Another Day Of Infamy

ecember 7 marks the 80th anniversary of the Japanese attack on the American naval base at Pearl Harbor that plunged the U.S. into World War II. President Franklin D. Roosevelt famously called it a “date which will live in infamy.”

With our Pacific fleet crippled, there were well-founded fears on that day that an invasion of the West Coast was imminent. Within hours, federal agents began rounding up Japanese civilians who were believed to be “dangerous enemy aliens” and incarcerating them without trial.

These were known in Japanese as issei, first-generation immigrants born in Japan. Most of them had lived in this country for decades but were not U.S. citizens. Under race-based immigration policies in effect since the 1920s they, along with most other Asians, were ineligible for naturalization, leaving them in a state of limbo. Several thousand were placed in hastilyconstructed internment camps under the jurisdiction of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), an agency of the Department of Justice.

Three of these camps were located in New Mexico.

As Orwellian as it sounds, this was, and still is, legal under international law. Citizens of an enemy nation may, in time of war, be interned for the duration of the conflict or until they can be repatriated to their home country. Many German and Italian nationals residing in this country were also arrested as enemy aliens, but the Japanese were incarcerated in disproportionately larger numbers, often on very flimsy evidence that they posed any threat to national security.

They should not be confused with the “relocation centers” operated by another government agency, the War Relocation Authority, or WRA. There were 10 of these, mostly located in remote parts of the mountain west, built to house Japanese-Americans ordered to leave their homes under the notorious Executive Order 9066, signed by Roosevelt in February 1942. This authorized the War Department to designate the states

of Washington, Oregon, California, and part of southern Arizona as a military “exclusion zone” from which all persons of Japanese ancestry, regardless of citizenship, were to be removed. The exclusion zone did not include New Mexico, and none of the WRA camps were located here.

At around 2 a.m. July 27, 1942, a train carrying 147 internees pulled onto a siding near Camp Lordsburg. A contingent of armed guards from the camp took custody of the men and set off to march them the three miles to the compound. Two of the internees, Hirota Isomura and Toshiro Kobata, both 58 years old, had medical conditions that prevented them from keeping up with the rest of the group.

Isomura, a commercial fisherman, had received a serious back injury in a work-related accident and had difficulty walking. Kobata suffered from tuberculosis and chronic shortness of breath. One soldier, Pfc. Clarence A. Burleson, was assigned to accompany the two stragglers.

Burleson was armed with a 12-gauge riot gun, loaded with 00 buckshot. By the time the trio passed the camp gate they were well behind the others.

Of the three INS camps in New Mexico, the largest and longest-lived was in Santa Fe. The others were at Fort Stanton, in the Sacramento Mountains near Ruidoso, and in Lordsburg, in the southwestern corner of our state. The operation of Camp Lordsburg, unlike the other two, was delegated to the U.S. Army.

The camp commander was Lt. Col. Clyde A. Lundy, a former enlisted man who had risen through the ranks over his nearly 40-year career. As an officer, he had grown fond of the genteel social life of the peacetime Army and the prodigious alcohol consumption that was a part of it. He reportedly used his office safe as a liquor cabinet. He was not considered a capable administrator.

What happened then is unclear.

One account suggests the men asked permission to relieve themselves by the side of the road. (continued on next page)

According to Burleson, they then began to run toward the perimeter fence, ignoring his shouted orders to halt. He shouldered his shotgun and fired twice, mortally wounding both men. Isomura died where he fell; Kobata was taken to the camp infirmary, where he succumbed a few hours later.

A board of inquiry was convened later that day to investigate the incident. Several witnesses were called to testify, but none had witnessed the actual shooting and only Col. Lundy—who had been in bed at the time—reported hearing the order to halt. Based on Burleson’s version of events, the board concluded that he was “acting in the performance of his duty under legal orders. . .”

Nevertheless, as a formality, a general court-martial was held about six weeks later at Fort Bliss, near El Paso.

The trial lasted one day, and again Burleson was exonerated. Two weeks later he was promoted to corporal.

At the time the incident occurred, Camp Lordsburg was embroiled in a labor dispute. The Japanese internees complained that they were being overworked in violation of the Geneva Convention of 1929, the protocols of which governed their treatment.

They refused to report for work.

Lundy responded by confining them to their un-air-conditioned barracks and withholding canteen privileges.

Nerves were on edge in the camp.

Some charged that Isohara and Kobata had been killed as an example to the strikers.

What really happened that hot July night will probably never be known.

It certainly seems improbable that two middle-aged men with welldocumented disabilities would have suddenly decided to make a break for freedom in unfamiliar desert country where they knew no one.

As for Col. Lundy, a few months later he was accused of mishandling camp funds, and was relieved of his command, forced into retirement.

To help you weigh your claiming strategies, you need to know that Social Security Administration claims specialists are not trained or authorized to give you personal advice on when you should start drawing your benefits. They can only provide you information on how the system works under different circumstances. To get advice you’ll need to turn to other sources.

Factors to Consider As you may already know, you can claim Social Security any time between the ages of 62 and 70, but each year you wait increases your benefits between 5 and 8 percent.

Online Tools Your first step in getting Social Security claiming strategy advice is to go to SSA.gov/myaccount to get your personalized statement that estimates what your retirement benefits will be at ages 62 through 70. These estimates are based on your yearly earnings that are also listed on your report.

Once you get your estimates for both you and your wife, there are a number online Social Security strategy calculators you can turn to that can compare your options so you can make an informed decision.

The best one that’s completely free to use is Open Social Security (OpenSocialSecurity.com), which runs the math for each possible claiming age (or, if you’re married, each possible combination of claiming ages) and reports back, telling you which strategy is expected to provide the most total spendable dollars over your lifetime.

But if you want a more thorough analysis consider fee-based calculators like Maximize My Social Security (MaximizeMySocialSecurity. com) or Social Security Solutions (SocialSecuritySolutions.com). Both of these tools, which are particularly helpful to married couples as well as divorced or widowed persons, will run what-if scenarios based on your circumstances and show how different filing strategies affect the total payout over the same time frame.

Maximize My Social Security’s web-based service costs $40 per year for a household, while Social Security Solutions offers several levels of web-based and personalized phone advice ranging from $20 to $250.

In-Person Advice You may also be able to get help through a financial planner.

Look for someone who is a feeonly certified financial planner

(CFP) that charges on an hourly basis and has experience in Social Security analysis.

New Zealand To New Mexico

I

met Sharon, my future wife, in the LAX International terminal in September 1987.

I’m a Kiwi and worked 18 years for the NZ Tourism Board, finishing my term in LAX coordinating a group of 160 hand selected travel agents from across the USA for an educational visit to NZ. Sharon was in the group I personally escorted.

Before I talk about the outcome of that adventure, it’s timely to clarify what ‘a Kiwi’ really means, with comment on history, horticulture, ornithology and marketing!

A NZ missionary returning home from China in the 1850’s carried the seeds of her favorite fruit with her. They grew prolifically in NZ conditions and were called Chinese Gooseberries.

When our first export of this delicious fruit connected with marketing people in San Francisco, they said ‘we can’t market a weird name like that, you have to change it.’

We changed the name to Kiwifruit, in part because it resembles the Kiwi, NZ’s unique, nocturnal, flightless national bird.

A Kiwi - not the fruit – is also an endearing term for New Zealander’s.

We’ve been married for 34 years – 10 in NZ, 9 in AZ, 6 in NZ - and lived in ABQ since 2012.

Our son is a US Navy Vet and for 7 creative years I’ve been an artist painting unique wall murals at people’s homes.

Sharon’s transition to life in NZ was a challenge. She became acclimatized quickly – not acclimated, realized that driving on the left side was the right side and if she was really hungry at a restaurant and only ordered an entrée … she remained hungry. The metric system we adopted in 1967 was also an adjustment.

My previous experience of life in the USA made our move to NM easy but gardening was an unexpected challenge. Rich NZ soil

with a good mix of sun and rain meant that everything you planted grew prolifically. In ABQ we were praying plants would rise-up from the compressed dust then had to figure out if we’d drowned it! Good

neighborly advice told us when we plant things, they will ‘sleep, creep, then leap’ in their own time.

Eager to add color to our landscape I used my acrylic canvas experience and painted sunflowers on our back wall. When it snowed 6 weeks later, I asked Sharon what she felt looking out at the bright colorful flowers from our warm home and her answer -’just happy’- motivated me to help others enjoy that benefit.

Amongst the lifestyle changes Covid has brought us, the ability to improve the quality of life at homes by adding color and character to landscapes has been a welcome blessing for many people.

We miss the predominant greens and blues of the NZ landscape and the fact that nowhere is more than 70 miles from the sea but we focus on the many pluses of NM. It’s taken me 9 winters to get used to January weather. When the sky is blue, the sun shining and its only 22F, long johns and sunglasses are critical to survival!

There’s an amazing fact about the Great Spotted Kiwi that mothers will cringe at and guys have no idea.

She takes 30 days to produce an egg, approx.25% of her body weight.

Wow! After that mammoth task, she needs a break and her lifelong mate incubates the egg for 11-12 weeks.

She returns periodically allowing him to hunt. A great team effort.

It was written by James Pierpont in 1857 in Boston, Mass., and was copyrighted under the title “The One-Horse Open Sleigh”. The song references the bells that were attached to a horse’s harness enabling people to hear oncoming sleighs at blind intersections and avoid collisions just like today’s car horns.

Today, face coverings and social distancing enable us to do both more safely amid the spread of the novel coronavirus. However, they can also add a layer of difficulty to reaching out to seniors who could benefit from interpersonal contact. Consider that many seniors have lost loved ones and may be spending the holidays alone. If you know someone who works in a hospital, nursing home, or assisted living facility, ask them how a person can help make the holidays a little more cheerful for their senior residents. And be sure to thank them for their work.

If communication can’t be conducted face-to-face (mask-tomask), ask a senior if a meal or a small gift might be delivered.

Inquire about any volunteer opportunities that might be available. Be mindful, too, that nursing homes and assisted living facilities are having

Covid outbreaks, so plan a visit accordingly.

As we enter our second holiday season with Covid as a backdrop, please continue to be vigilant. Wash your hands, wear face coverings, practice social

distancing, and consider the New Mexico Department of Health’s urgent recommendation to get vaccinated.

Magnesium is an electrolyte involved in the electrical activities of the heart. People with hypertension or heart rhythm imbalances benefit from a magnesium-rich diet. It helps with the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats while lowering blood glucose, making it a metabolic heavyweight.

Increased energy, stress reduction, and metabolic power make magnesium an excellent holiday helper.

Supplemental magnesium is wise, especially if you take calcium or vitamins K2 and D3 because of their synergistic qualities. Magnesium activates the functions of vitamin D, which makes it essential for immune health. It also protects against vitamin D toxicity and prevents calcium deposits in the kidney, arteries (including the heart), soft tissue, and cartilage, which can cause arthritis. Magnesium and calcium work harmoniously in nerve communication, muscle contraction, and heart rhythm. However, they compete for absorption during digestion. Supplement magnesium at least two hours away from calcium. The National Institutes of Health note that bones store up to 60 percent of magnesium; the remainder resides in soft tissues, leaving 1 percent in blood serum.

A 10-year study at MIT revealed that magnesium-L-Threonate crosses the blood-brain barrier and may help with cognitive decline, memory function, anxiety, and sleep problems. If you select magnesium-L-Threonate for brain health, work up to 600 mg in the

morning and 1200 mg at night. For general supplementation, look for magnesium glycinate, gluconate, or citrate and avoid the poorly absorbed form of magnesium oxide. Women need at least 320 mg and men at least 420 mg of magnesium per day. Magnesium can lead to sleepiness, which can be an excellent reason to take it in the evening. If you are looking to relieve constipation, slowly increase your amount until you get a loose stool (which is the sign of your upper limit dose). If you have a sensitive bowel, use caution with magnesium supplements.

As you put together your holiday recipes, consider molasses. One cup has 816 mg of magnesium. Next, consider rice bran. One cup carries 922 mg of the precious mineral. Are you making banana bread? One cup of banana has 60 mg of magnesium.

Add a little quinoa (118 mg per cup), a bit of rolled oats (270 mg per cup), and your baked goods will overflow with magnesium.

Seeds and nuts are great to add to your bread and cookies this holiday season. One cup of roasted pumpkin seeds carries 168 mg of magnesium, a cup of sesame seeds provides 100 mg, a cup of almonds bears 395 mg. Cocoa powder is also likely to end up in your holiday treats, and with every cup, you receive 430 mg of magnesium.
