GiveABQ Needs Furniture Donations To Create More Homes Before The Holidays

I

f you are remodeling, downsizing or combining households, and you’re not sure where to donate your furniture that is still in good condition, remember GiveABQ. GiveABQ provides a single location where donations can be collected from the public and where nonprofits can select and get items they need for their organization or their clients in need. Because the GiveABQ warehouse operates as the donations center for over 100 local charities, it’s the perfect place to donate in New Mexico.

GiveABQ needs sofas, love seats, chairs, lamps, sofa tables, kitchen tables and chairs, and dressers. In partnership with the City of Albuquerque’s Department of Family and Community Services and the nonprofit organizations supporting the homeless that participate in GiveABQ, the program’s current goal is to collect furniture for as many families as possible before the end of 2020.

The program collects donations year-round, but is working with the City on the issue of homelessness as we enter the holidays.

To make this project a reality, GiveABQ needs furniture donations. Furniture is an important aspect of stable housing for families who have been experiencing homelessness. It’s not enough to find an apartment or empty house.

When there are furnishings such as a sofa, a kitchen table, chairs, and dressers, people begin to feel like it’s a home.

Yes, GiveABQ picks up furniture donations! People who wish to donate can arrange a pickup via the www.GiveABQ.org website by clicking on donate. Furniture can also be delivered to the GiveABQ warehouse at 1520 1st St NW in downtown Albuquerque. Operating

hours are Tuesday-Friday 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM, but donors should call before visiting. GiveABQ has a limited crew and they are often out picking up donations or delivering furniture to a family in need.

In 2019, Adelante Development Center launched GiveABQ to impact other New Mexico nonprofits and strengthen the entire community. GiveABQ operates under the principles of Give, Re-Use, and Impact. GiveABQ makes giving easy. If someone has furniture, household items, or durable medical equipment to donate, they want to make sure their gifts go where they are needed. Thanks to the collaborative approach of GiveABQ, donors can give to one place and benefit multiple nonprofits and the people they support. When a family or a business gets new furnishings, GiveABQ picks up the items that are in good, usable shape and gets them to nonprofits that need them. Finding an organization that will re-use items is better for the environment and better for people in need, too.

Daily finger stick blood glucose levels provide snapshots of what your blood sugar levels are at any time so you can treat accordingly.

There is another very important test called the hemoglobin A1C (also called HbA1C or A1C) that provides a picture of your average blood sugar level over the past two to three months.

This information is used to monitor how well your treatment is working over time. The A1C test can also be used to diagnose diabetes.

The A1C test is a simple blood test that doesn’t have to be done fasting. The results are displayed as a percentage. In general, diabetics should aim to have an A1C of 7% or less, but you should always check with your doctor on what your level should be. Some people need to aim for a different A1C level than others depending on their unique situation.

The A1C test is usually done two to four times a year.

It is common to hear people say their A1C is 9% or even higher and they feel fine. Numbers this high indicate poorly controlled diabetes.

Studies have shown A1C levels are directly related to risk of developing complications from diabetes. The

higher the A1C the higher the risk.

While you may feel fine at 9%, damage is being done within your body every day the blood sugar is above your target range.

What are the complications of uncontrolled diabetes?

Uncontrolled diabetes leads to serious complications that develop over time. Lowering your A1C by 1% decreases the rate of any complications of diabetes by 21%!

complications is diabetic retinopathy, which can cause vision loss and blindness. Most people do not have symptoms until the disease is very advanced. By then it’s too late to do anything about the vision loss. Controlling diabetes and a yearly eye exam is the only way to decrease your chances of developing this complication.

Uncontrolled diabetes can also affect your kidney function. This is called diabetic nephropathy. If left unchecked it can lead to chronic kidney disease and even kidney failure requiring dialysis. Chronic kidney disease results in protein leakage into the urine. A yearly urine test that measures the amount of protein in the urine is recommended for all diabetics.

Early detection can lead to early treatment with a medication called an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor or an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) to slow the progression of kidney disease.

Diabetic neuropathy can lead to foot complications. Diabetes can decrease blood flow to the feet and damage nerves. This can result in decreased ability to feel pain and

increased risk for infections and ulcers. It is important to do daily selfexaminations of the feet. This means looking between the toes, at the soles of the feet, and tending to any cracked skin or calluses.

If you haven’t gotten an A1C test recently nor completed your yearly eye exam or yearly urine protein test, do not delay — call your health care provider today and schedule an appointment to get these completed before the end of the year.

What other conditions should a person with diabetes be concerned with?

People with diabetes are more likely to also have high cholesterol and high blood pressure. The combination of high blood sugar, high cholesterol and high blood pressure increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. It is important to know your numbers — know your blood pressure and know your HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglyceride level. If any of these numbers are above target, you and your health care provider should develop an appropriate treatment plan.

Is there anything else I need to know or do if I have diabetes?

If you smoke, stop smoking. There are several resources, such as quit lines, medications and counseling/ support groups. Maintaining a regular exercise regimen and eating a healthy diet is important for everyone.

Having diabetes increases your risk for developing severe illness from COVID-19. Now more than ever it is important to maintain your treatment plan and remain engaged with your health care provider in controlling your blood sugar levels. Remember to mask up, lather up and sleeve up (get your influenza vaccine).

Giving Thanks To The CCC

f you’ve spent any time at all in the Sandia Mountains, you’ve seen the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps. The massive log shelters at the Doc Long picnic area, the Kiwanis Cabin on Sandia Crest, the stone bridges over Las Huertas Creek above the village of Placitas, the rock shelters and picnic tables in Juan Tabo Canyon—all are part of the enduring legacy of the CCC. It was one of the earliest and most successful of the many “alphabet agencies” launched by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in an effort

to jump-start the nation’s economy as it foundered in the depths of the Great Depression. Roosevelt signed the legislation creating the corps less than a month after taking office in March of 1933, and within weeks the CCC was up and running in all 48 states.

The corps enrolled young, single men (no women) between the ages of 18 and 25 whose families were on government assistance and put them to work on a variety of public works projects around the country. They built roads and trails, campgrounds and picnic areas. They worked on soil and water conservation projects, strung rural telephone lines, planted trees, dug ditches, and built diversion dams, fish hatcheries, fire lookout towers, stock tanks, and cattle guards.

At times they were even called upon

to fight forest fires, assist in search and rescue operations, and combat plagues of grasshoppers. Other CCC projects around New Mexico include the National Park Service Regional Headquarters building in Santa Fe, the visitors center at Bandelier National Monument, the catwalk at Glenwood, the bathhouses at Bottomless Lakes State Park near Roswell, and the flagstone walkway at the entrance to Carlsbad Caverns.

Those who served here came from all parts of New Mexico, and a few from other states. Most were from rural areas, and 81 percent were Hispanic. In addition to the age requirement, an applicant had to be a U.S. citizen in good health, weigh at least 107 pounds, stand between 5 feet and 6 feet, 6 inches tall, and have at least three “serviceable, natural teeth,” which provides an indication of the level of dental hygiene in the 1930s.

Life in a CCC camp resembled life in the Army. The day began with a bugler blowing reveille at 6 a.m., followed by a flag-raising ceremony and calisthenics. Then the enrollees (as they were called) ate a

quick breakfast and by 7:30 began boarding trucks to take them to the day’s work site. There, they labored until around 4 p.m., with half an hour off for lunch. This was their routine five days a week.

Working under master craftsmen known as Local Experienced Men, or LEMs, the CCC boys learned trades like carpentry, stone masonry, plumbing, electrical work, and welding. Some learned to drive trucks and operate heavy equipment.

Perhaps most importantly, they learned self-discipline and good work habits that served them well in later life.

During their off-hours, enrollees had a variety of recreational activities available to them. Most camps had a library, a game room, organized sports and movies. Many published a weekly or monthly newspaper. Camp mess halls served wholesome food, and more of it than some enrollees were used to getting at home. But the standard fare was generally too bland for New Mexico palates.

began adding chile, pinto beans, and tortillas to their menus.

Enrollees were paid the princely sum of $30 a month, $25 of which they were required to send home to their families. For many during the Depression, a son in the CCC was the only family member earning a steady paycheck.

Some critics disparaged the CCC as a “make-work” program whose members spent most of the day leaning on their shovels. But considering how much the corps accomplished during the nine years of its existence, there couldn’t have been too much shovel-leaning going on.

The number of camps in New Mexico fluctuated from year to year, but was generally around 40. The main camp in the Sandias, active from 1933 to 1941, was located just off the Crest Road (NM 536) not far from the Tinkertown Museum.

Hardly a trace of it now remains.

Family Caregivers Of Veterans Eligible For Free Professional Help

T

he Elizabeth Dole Foundation and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs have launched an emergency respite care fund for the family caregivers of wounded, ill, and injured veterans.

The program, Respite Relief for Military and Veteran Caregivers, will provide non-medical, no-cost, professional home care to veteran caregivers who are struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic.

CareLinx, a nationwide professional home care network, helped launch the fund with a donation of $1 million worth of services. Wounded Warrior Project then contributed an additional $1 million to expand the program. The Foundation expects to provide 75,000 hours of care to more than 3,000 veteran caregivers.

“The lack of affordable, convenient, professional respite care has always taken a significant toll on the emotional and physical well-being of veteran caregivers,” said Steve Schwab, CEO of the

Elizabeth Dole Foundation. “Now, due to the increased health risks and limitations created by the pandemic, we are seeing a spike in the need for short-term relief.”

Even as states re-open, some of the most critically wounded or ill veterans and their caregivers will have a long journey back to the pre-pandemic world. These veterans often have vulnerable immune systems that require their caregivers to take every precaution against exposure. By asking family and friends to keep their distance, they are losing a vital source of daily support.

“We are grateful to CareLinx and Wounded Warrior Project for helping us respond to this urgent need,” Schwab continued. “We hope other organizations also step up, so we can ensure every veteran caregiver suffering during COVID-19 receives the help they need.”

The program is rolling out in select regions and will expand nationwide over time. Eligible caregivers can request services that include companionship, grocery shopping, cooking, mobility assistance, transportation, bathing, and other activities of daily living. AARP and Bob Woodruff

f you are in the business of preventative cardiology, you would learn that most of your patients have diets to die for. Health experts call it the Southern Diet because people in the south have a higher incidence of obesity, diabetes hypertension,

Although, the typical Mediterranean diet does not specifically stress reducing saturated fat, for a heart healthy program, the type of fats you eat are important.

Green leafy vegetables, a major component of this diet, have direct healthy effects on your arteries and blood pressure. Dietary pattern rich in a variety of green leafy vegetables has significant beneficial effects on atherosclerotic vascular disease risk factors.

Juicing extracts are very popular.

Their liquid maintains the benefits of whole fruits or vegetables except the fiber is left out. Fiber is an important ingredient in your healthy diet and also slowly absorbs the sugar from a sugary juiced drink. That can be problematic because the juice will spike your blood sugar, make you hungry whereas fiber keeps that from happening.

Nuts can be included in a diet containing to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Unfortunately, they are high in calories: one study found that the Mediterranean diet supplemented with 30 g of mixed nuts resulted in a 30% reduction in cardiovascular disease including a 50% reduction in stroke compared to people not adding nuts. We also note that nut eaters tend to be more conscientious about exercise.

I used to have vision insurance through my work but lost it when I turned 65 and signed up for Medicare.

Medicare Advantage plans, which are sold through private insurance companies, cover all the same medical and hospital services that original Medicare does, but many of them also provide vision as well as dental, hearing and prescription drugs too.

While there’s no one solution to this common need, here are a few tips that can help you save.

Discount Stores Purchasing eyeglasses from discount retailers is another way to save. Costco Optical is one of the best discount stores for good eyewear and low prices.

Eyeglasses cost an average of around $184, but to shop there you have to pay a $60 annual membership fee. Some other good retail options for low prices include Sam’s Club Optical and Walmart Vision Centers.

You also need to find out if you are eligible for any discounts.

Some retailers provide discounts to membership groups like AARP and AAA. AARP members, for example, can get 30 percent off a pair of glasses (frames and lenses) at LensCrafters and Glasses.com, and you save an additional $10 on a complete pair at Target Optical. AARP also offers $55 comprehensive eye exams (dilation included) at participating eye doctors. See AARPVisionDiscounts.com for more information.

Buy Online Buying eyeglasses online can also offer huge savings. Stores like ZenniOptical.com, and EyeBuyDirect.com sell prescription eyeglasses for as little as $6 and $7. These sites let you upload a photo of your face, so you can see what you’d look like in different frames.

Or, for a snappier choice of frames see WarbyParker.com, which offers single-vision glasses starting at $95. They even offer a free program where you can request up to five pairs to try on at home for five days.

To purchase glasses online, you’ll need a valid prescription from an eye doctor (typically no more than a year old), plus your pupillary distance number, which is the distance, measured in millimeters, between the centers of your pupils in each eye.

Low-Income Assistance If your income is low, depending on where you live, there may be some local clinics that provide free or discounted eye exams and eyeglasses. Put in a call to your local Lions Club to see what’s available in your area.

Pandemic Depression: Genetic Insight May Help Treatment

ocial isolation during the pandemic may pose a mental health threat for those already at risk for COVID-19— people over age 65.

As doctors treat more senior patients for depression, an increasingly popular genetic test may inform their treatment decisions. The GeneSight test (www.genesight.com) provides information about how your genes may impact how you metabolize and respond to certain depression medications.

Innovative solutions for mental health conditions are important.

As the pandemic and its resulting isolation wears on, many are struggling with their mental health.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, loneliness can be associated with higher rates of depression.

“When I first experienced depression, it happened all of a sudden,” shared Doreen, a wife, mother of three grown children,

and retiree. “It was like a cloud happened in my head.”

Symptoms of depression can include changes in sleep or eating patterns, decreased energy, difficulty concentrating or a lack of motivation.

Doreen saw her doctor, who prescribed a depression medication but it didn’t alleviate her symptoms.

“I began to see one doctor, then another, to help deal with my depression,” said Doreen.

Her doctors “tried many, many different medications and none seemed to work. Finally, my heart doctor said, ‘Doreen, I’ve heard about this gene test, I think it might help you.’”

Her doctor was referring to the GeneSight test.

The test is a simple cheek swab, ordered by a healthcare provider who can prescribe medications. A patient can take the test at home or in the doctor’s office.

Using a patient’s unique DNA, the GeneSight test informs doctors about potential gene-drug interactions. The report provides information about which depression medications may require dose adjustments, may be less likely to work, or may have an increased risk of side effects based on a patient’s genetic makeup.

The GeneSight test helped Doreen’s doctor to make an informed treatment decision; she was prescribed a new medication.

“That’s when my life started to change. I got back to smiling, being happy and laughing again. I got back to being me,”

Doreen said.

The coronavirus damage to my retirement account has me considering it but want to make sure I know what I’m getting into.

Cash-Strapped Senior Dear Cash-Strapped, Massive job losses, a volatile stock market and low interest rates caused by the coronavirus pandemic has caused many cashstrapped retirees to consider a reverse mortgage. But there’s a lot to consider to be sure it’s a good option for you now.

Let’s start with the basics.

A reverse mortgage is a unique type of loan that allows older homeowners to borrow money

Should Seniors Consider A Reverse Mortgage Now?

against the equity in their house (or condo) that doesn’t have to be repaid until the homeowner dies, sells the house or moves out for at least 12 months. At that point, you or your heirs will have to pay back the loan plus accrued interest and fees, but you will never owe more than the value of your home.

It’s also important to understand that with a reverse mortgage, you, not the bank, own the house, so you’re still required to pay your property taxes and homeowners insurance. Not paying them can result in foreclosure.

To be eligible, you must be 62 years of age or older, own your own home (or owe only a small balance) and currently be living there.

You will also need to undergo a financial assessment to determine whether you can afford to continue paying your property taxes and insurance. Depending on your financial situation, you may be required to put part of your loan into an escrow account to pay future bills. If the financial assessment finds that you cannot pay your insurance and taxes and have enough cash left to live on, you’ll be denied.

Loan Details Around 95 percent of all reverse mortgages offered are Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECM), which are FHA insured and offered through private mortgage lenders and banks. HECM’s also have home value limits that vary by county but cannot exceed $765,600.

How much you can actually get through a reverse mortgage depends on your age (the older you are the more you can get), your home’s value and the prevailing interest rates. Generally, most people can borrow somewhere between 50 and 60 percent of the home’s value. To estimate how much you can borrow, use the reverse mortgage calculator at ReverseMortgage.org.

To receive your money, you can opt for a lump sum, a line of credit, regular monthly checks or a combination of these.

But be aware the reverse mortgages aren’t cheap. HECM loans require a 2 percent upfront mortgage insurance payment, plus an additional 0.5 percent annual (continued on next page)

charge, on top of origination costs and lenders’ fees. Any amount you borrow, including these fees and insurance, accrues interest, which means your debt grows over time.

Also note that because reverse mortgages are complex loans, all borrowers are required to get counseling through a HUD approved independent counseling agency before taking one out.

Other Options If you have a short-term need

for cash, there are other options you should look into. For example, many low-income seniors don’t realize they qualify for the earned income tax credit, a refundable tax break that can put cash in your pocket. You also could use BenefitsCheckUp.org to search for financial assistant programs you may be eligible for.

Another possibility is a regular home equity loan or line of credit.

This type of borrowing requires you to make payments, and lenders can freeze or lower limits on lines of credit, but the borrowing costs are much lower.

If you have subterranean termites, for example, it may be possible to eradicate a colony using tetracycline. Tetracyclines are often given to livestock to control and treat bacterial infections. You can buy tetracycline at most feed stores.

Termite workers have intestinal microorganisms containing protozoans in their lower digestive system, and these microorganisms contain enzymes that help them digest cellulose. The tetracycline will kill the protozoans and prevent the termites from digesting the cellulose that will eventually, and usually quickly, starve and kill the entire termite colony. I recommend adding boric acid or borax to the solution to make it work even faster.

You will want to check the bait stations about 30 days after putting them in the ground. If you find more than 100 worker termites and a dozen or so soldiers, it means the entire colony is most likely involved and will soon be eliminated. This would be a good time to put fresh cardboard soaked with tetracycline and boric acid or borax in the ground. Then check the stations bi-weekly and replace if there is activity.

You’ll also need some flat pieces of cardboard. Dilute a packet of tetracycline mixed with three tablespoons of boric acid in a half gallon of water. Soak the cardboard with the water mixture, then place the cardboard in the dug holes, pour some Ginger Ale on top, and cover them. Place these tetracycline bait stations around the house - one in each corner and one in between each corner about a foot from the foundation.

Melatonin is a popular dietary supplement most commonly known for its role in regulating sleep and wake cycles. Recent research suggests it also deserves attention for its anti-inflammatory and immune fighting power.

Melatonin is a hormone produced naturally by the body. Its levels rise in the evening as it gets darker and diminish in the morning when it is light. However, the natural production of melatonin decreases with age. Many consider a melatonin dietary supplement when they have trouble sleeping, but it might also be worth considering

Melatonin is historically known to exist primarily in the pituitary gland in the brain. Melatonin looks like a suitable protective anti-viral to have on hand entering flu season. The Journal of Virus Research published in October 2020 a public health emergency notification that melatonin has been found to play a crucial role against viral infections. Indeed, it helps balance immune responses, mitigates bacteria and viruses, influences healthful rest, improves blood pressure, and hosts other immune and energy systems in the body. For those who have already contracted a virus, melatonin continues to limit the duration and severity of its impact.

There is not a recommended daily dose of melatonin for medical conditions. The dosage trend to induce better sleep is 1 mg at first.

Then add 1 mg gradually every few days until the desired effect is noticed. A total of 5 mg to 10 mg per day is recommended unless otherwise directed by a physician.

Melatonin has few side effects and is generally considered a safe dietary supplement. Melatonin can cause extreme drowsiness, so take your dose before bed and do not plan to drive or operate machinery. As always, let your doctor know of your supplement regimen to determine any potential interactions with other medications you consume. Find a melatonin supplement that meets your needs for better rest, improved immunity, or as a prophylactic during cold and flu season. I use a generic variety, so I don’t break the bank.

hanksgiving is almost here. The Thanksgiving holiday that we recognize can be traced back to a celebration in 1621 at Plymouth Massachusetts. However there is some documentation that a similar occurrence took place in 1619 at Charles City County Virginia. Both festivities marked survival from a harsh winter with the assistance of the local indigenous people. Two other states have also claimed Thanksgiving celebrations that predated both those associated with Massachusetts and Virginia.

it is interesting to know that many countries throughout the world celebrate a Thanksgiving Day of some sort. Brazil, Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom celebrate similar holidays. The commonality around the world is being thankful for all the blessings received, by peace, and the successes achieved by each country.

President George Washington proclaimed the 1st American nationwide thanksgiving recognition November 26, 1789 as a “day of public thanksgiving and prayer.” Thanksgiving observations occurred on a state by state basis at different times of the year. It was not until the time of Abraham Lincoln’s presidency in 1863 that a formal proclamation that the final Thursday in November be designated as a “Thanksgiving Day.” The ongoing Civil War kept this from being enacted.

However, it was president Franklin Delano Roosevelt who signed a joint resolution with Congress to move Thanksgiving Day forward one week to the third Thursday in November on December 26, 1941.

How thankfulness effects health is the fact that gratitude helps manage stress. Research has shown that gratitude leads to increased optimism which boosts immune function. In this era of Covid-19, a robust functioning immune system is key. Besides being grateful for what you have: health, family, shelter etc… what else can be done to boost immune function?

While we think of Thanksgiving as solely an American holiday,

The following suggestions may seem intuitive: don’t smoke, if you drink, avoid excessive alcohol; choose fruits and vegetables for snacks, and

exercise in moderation regularly.

This doesn’t mean marathon -type training, it means get out and walk, socially distance and wear a mask. Get plenty of good quality sleep: 7-8 hours per night.

Wash your hands frequently and avoid touching your face.

Minimize stress.

Not everyone wants to wear a mask, not everyone likes washing their hands all day, and not everyone likes to be away from those they love. Remember the life you save by wearing a mask, may be someone you know and care about.

This Thanksgiving is different than any Thanksgiving we have experienced. Gatherings are frowned upon and virtual celebrations may be the order of the day. Be thankful for where you are, who you are and what family/friends you have. These are the treasures we hold dear and may you have a safe, and joyous holiday season.
