edicare open enrollment begins this month, and while so much in the health care landscape is in flux, Medicare officials are expecting a smooth season.

Seniors have from October 15December 7 to make changes to their Medicare plans and choose their plan administrators. The enrollment period is two weeks after Medicare distributes its Annual Notification of Change, which details any shifts in the program from year to year. So far, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has announced that changes are coming to Medicare cards, with Social Security numbers removed. CMS also announced that drug premiums will be slightly more affordable this year, dropping about $1.20 per month over last year.

Janice Torrez, vice president of external affairs and chief of staff for Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Mexico, said that New Mexicans have the opportunity to be discerning when choosing their Medicare plans.

“Seniors in particular are really looking for stability, for financial assurance that the company is going to be there for them should they need services,” Torrez said.

“And I think many seniors are on fixed income, so they look closely at the variety of plans and look at out-of-pocket expense. Some of our members are engaged in going through scenarios, looking at what their hospital stay might be or prescriptions might be. They look at the overall cost of the co-pays and coinsurance.”

Many Medicare Advantage plans and other New Mexican insurers will hold seminars throughout the enrollment period so that people, especially those eligible for

Medicare, can comparison shop.

These seminars are an excellent way for people to hear not only about general options but also to get more information about their specific situations.

These presentations also let members and potential members know more about each Medicare Advantage plan’s valueadded benefits, such as gym memberships. BCBS, for example, offers a transportation benefit as well as preloaded cards that work as debit cards for healthrelated items. The idea is that seniors won’t have to choose between spending a fixed income on groceries or bills and cold medicine. Presbyterian, meanwhile, offers its Medicare members video visits, a dental plan and a promise of no referrals required.

Each carrier has a calendar of educational events and more detailed information about how plans are changing this year.

Additionally, Medicare users can visit medicare.gov to compare plans against one another, search for providers in the networks, and research specific drugs’ costs and availability for each plan. The Exchange also operates bewellnm. com, which lets visitors to that site sign up for updates ahead of and during the enrollment period. Its health plan comparison tool is also available year-round.

RobotiCare?

W

ith a shortage of trained and qualified caregivers, is a crisis looming that will be met with a robotic solution?

We can do better than that.

By 2050, the number of U.S. adults aged 65 and older is projected to rise to 88.5 million individuals, more than double the number of those over the age of 65 in 2010. New Mexico is projected to experience a more rapid growth in this age range, moving it from a state with one of the lowest percentages of elders to having one of the highest by the year 2030.

According to the 2010 census figures, the percentage of New Mexico’s population that is age 65 or older is 13.2%, up from 11.7% in 2000. The U.S. Census predicts that New Mexico will move from 16th in the nation to 4th in the percentage of people over the age of 65 by 2030. 1 The paid caregiver workforce-some 2.5 million strong—is

that labor force that provides the day-to-day care for our state’s elderly and those with disabilities.

The U.S. Department of Labor counts the direct care occupations (Nursing Assistants, Orderlies and Attendants; Home Health Aides; and Personal Care Assistants) as among the four fastest-growing occupations.

In New Mexico, the paid caregiver workforce is projected to grow from 50,000 in 2010 to more than 60,000 in 2016.2 And, according to the New Mexico Department of Aging and LongTerm Services, the number of informal or unpaid family caregivers in New Mexico number 210,000, almost four times the number of paid caregivers!

Why not get New Mexicans back to work first?

As Steven Shepelwich of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City notes, credentials for caregivers are uncommon in a field with few standard educational requirements. It’s because state

and federal rules make it hard to assess or compare educational requirements, so competencies and quality standards differ from state to state. 3 Steve Edelstein, formerly of PHI National and now Aspen Institute, has long argued that investing in a fairly-paid, stable and qualified workforce includes clarifying job competencies and aligning training programs so that frontline healthcare workers can deliver those skills desired by employers and care recipients alike. It’s in this way that that caregivers gain the professional benefits such as health insurance, sick leave and paid vacations.

The New Mexico Direct Caregivers Coalition advocates for caregivers, promoting education, training and credentialing so that they can gain access to better wages, are valued by their employers and care recipients alike. We believe that these kinds of investments increase productivity, reduce turnover and result higher quality care.

Let’s invest in New Mexico caregivers. Then we’ll see about roboticare.

Charitable Giving

A

utumn begins the twilight of each year. It hosts a period of thankfulness and thoughtfulness, and so it is the perfect time to begin to consider charitable giving. Most nonprofit organizations heavily depend upon year-end gifts to achieve annual goals, including both local and global charities.

The end of summer this year brought great need across the nation and around the world in the wake of natural disasters, including hurricanes that pummeled the Gulf Coast, much of Florida and island territories.

Locally, nonprofits in New Mexico provided such needful and important work as help for low-income seniors, housing the homeless, impacting adult literacy, creating mental health awareness and delivering grants for students.

In addition to the plethora of deserving places to offer one’s resources, there are also new ways to do it. The Internet and

social media have not only helped nonprofits create new avenues for giving but also have launched a new era of direct funding for individuals, small businesses and charitable endeavors. There are many types of giving to consider, such as creative estate planning and endowed scholarships, onetime gifts, emergency funding, and more. While both the need and the work achieved are great, it can be difficult to choose how best to plan one’s year-end gifts. Here are several tips for choosing where to invest.

Give with meaning Most donors enjoy giving to people and organizations that are personal to them or whose work they can feel connected to in some way. These days, donors have more ways to make connections than ever before, including direct crowdfunding, such as through websites like GoFundMe, Kickstarter and DonorsChoose. A 2015 report from Kimbia, which runs crowdfunding site Give Local America, says that 42 percent of all crowdfunding comes from

donors age 55-72, and about 59 percent of that group was brand new to any kind of charitable giving. The appeal of these sites is that they make it easy to track how a small gift can make a significant impact. Sure, there are people looking for donors to fund a foray into creating the perfect bowl of mashed potatoes, but there are also people who need help starting businesses or buying supplies for classrooms. This kind of one-time giving allows donors to invest in trying to accomplish specific tasks. When it is applied to larger goals or organizations, instead of individuals, it is called impact giving and is enormously effective.

For example, the Associated Press reported in September that about 50 charities together raised $350 million for victims of Hurricane Harvey.

Alternatively, more traditional giving has meant partnering with charitable organizations’ broader missions, such as ending poverty or hunger. Clarifying one’s own (continued on next page)

values to decide whether an organization is in line with them is Step One for any donor, according to charity watchdog GuideStar, which details charities’ IRS filings.

Ultimately, choosing a goal that feels personally meaningful or fulfilling can also mean that donors can develop relationships with that organization or individual to follow its progress. This will also help determine how much to give and to whom. If a donor was touched by the rescue and rehabilitation efforts in hurricaneaffected areas, then one-time giving might make sense. If they want to help bring an end to homelessness, longer-term investments with organizations where they can also consider volunteering may be more meaningful. Donors need to ask themselves what they would like their money to accomplish.

Do some research It is important to ask questions of any charity being considered.

What are their long- and short-term goals? How much of any donation

goes toward administrative costs?

How is the charity seeing results?

Watchdog websites such as GuideStar.org, CharityWatch. org, as well as the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance at give.org allow donors to investigate further, study reports, and view privacy and other important policies. Throughout the fall, nonprofits ramp up giving pleas, so these types of tools are helpful to discern whether donations are making an impact on a community or on a charity’s ultimate goal. They also help weed out some scams or organizations that donors may not feel are responsible with gifts.

Consider your legacy One-time checks or monthly contributions are helpful for every charitable organization. But many donors want to leave gifts that have a lasting effect. For tax, stocks and estate gifts, consulting a wealth manager or estate planner can be invaluable. Universities and community foundations host endowments, which are often meaningful ways to pay tribute

to loved ones or to offer grants for future generations. Donors can contact their alma maters or interview local foundations for more information. These kinds of endowments typically have minimum thresholds before they begin to earn money in perpetuity, and each foundation has its own requirements. Finding the right organization may take time, but it is often a way to help create lasting

change in communities or to help offer scholarships and grants.

Ultimately, philanthropy can be a part of one’s legacy, whether a donor writes a check for $50 or for $50,000. With research and legwork, charitable giving can have a lasting impact for both the donor and the receiving organization.

Kirk Bryan, The Forgotten Geologist

A

woman my age, with an arthritic knee and a bad back, probably ought to find more relaxing ways to spend a summer morning than clambering around dodging rattlesnakes on a lava-strewn hillside searching for a 108-yearold rock inscription. But there I was, in the rugged and remote Mesa Prieta area near the southern end of Petroglyph National Monument on Albuquerque’s west side. I guess I’m just a sucker for a good mystery.

This was the third time I had gone looking for it and I still hadn’t found it. I knew it was out there someplace. Dr. Matt Schmader, recently retired City Archaeologist and Open Space Division head, had told me where to look, and he should know, since it was he who discovered it several years ago. But it was hard to spot. I scanned the dark basalt boulders through my binoculars.

Suddenly, there it was! “K. Bryan ‘09”-- several centuries younger than the ancient petroglyphs

nearby, and not very impressive artistically, but historically significant none the less.

So who was this “K. Bryan” who left his name for posterity? Almost certainly it was Kirk Bryan, and unless you’re a geologist or an avid student of local history, you’ve probably never heard of him.

He was born in Albuquerque in 1888 and attended the University of New Mexico, where he majored in geology, graduating in 1909. It was presumably while doing fieldwork for his senior thesis on the geology of the Albuquerque area that he left his mark at Mesa Prieta.

Even as an undergraduate Bryan displayed an impressive knowledge of his subject. In 1907 the Geological Society of America held its annual convention in Albuquerque, hosted by UNM. Bryan was assigned the task of leading a field trip of the area for some two dozen of the country’s foremost earth scientists. He held forth confidently, and if he was intimidated by their prestige, he didn’t let it show. Professor G.K. Gilbert of Yale was so impressed that he invited Bryan to come to

Yale to pursue a graduate degree, which he did.

His studies at Yale were interrupted by a stint of work with the U.S. Geological Survey, and by military service during the First World War, but he eventually completed his PhD. in 1920, and later went on to join the faculty at Harvard.

During his long residency in the East, Bryan never forgot his New Mexico roots. He wore a broad-brimmed Stetson hat, and for casual wear favored khaki work trousers and western shirts.

He continued to do fieldwork in the Southwest while teaching at Harvard. His publications include studies of the evolution of desert landforms, and the geology of Chaco Canyon and other important archaeological sites. His approach was interdisciplinary, exploring relationships between rock, soil, water, climate, and human occupation.

Much of his work focused on the geology and hydrology of the middle Rio Grande Valley. He was among the first to describe the series of interconnected structural

basins we now call the Rio Grande Rift—the defining geological feature of our state.

Not only was he a first-rate intellect, he was by all accounts a People Person, popular with students and colleagues. In the classroom, his lectures tended to be rambling, but many former students had fond memories of weekly seminars held in his Cambridge home, where the discussions were wide-ranging and stimulating. They were often accompanied by hot chocolate and homemade cookies or doughnuts prepared by Mrs. Bryan, the former Mary MacArthur of Wagon Mound, another native New Mexican.

Bryan died suddenly of heart failure while attending an archaeological conference in Cody, Wyoming, in 1950. He was 62 years old.

Apart from a small display inside Northrop Hall on the UNM campus, there are no monuments honoring this native son—except the one he carved himself on a volcanic outcrop on the West Mesa as a 21-year-old undergraduate in 1909.

prior to starting a new exercise program. Start slowly and gradually increase the level, duration and frequency of exercise. Physical activity is especially important for older adults and can help them to remain independent as long as possible. It has been shown that nursing home residents in their 80s and 90s developed significant improvement in their strength and overall functional capacity after participating in a supervised weightlifting program.

What research has been done on the benefits of older adults exercising?

A great deal of research has been done, and it consistently indicates that exercise improves the health of older adults. In a large study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association that included more than 1,600 women and men between the ages of 70 and 89, half of the people participated in an exercise program of daily walking, strength and balance exercises. Over the course of two and a half years, the people who exercised had a 28 percent lower chance of becoming disabled compared to the other half of people who did not exercise.

Are there other benefits from regular exercise?

Yes. Regular exercise can help to lower your risk of heart disease, heart attack and high blood pressure. Additionally, it can help control diabetes and help you maintain a healthy weight. Exercise can improve your mood by releasing substances in your body know as endorphins, which can help to decrease feelings of depression. Physical activity has also been shown to help your brain function.

What things can I do to stay active?

There are many options. One is volunteering. It’s a great way to meet people and to give back to your community, and research has shown that volunteering improves physical and mental health. Walking and hiking is another great way to

stay active. When the weather is nice, walk around your street or a nearby park. During the winter months, go to a local mall and walk inside.

Are there more strenuous activities that I can do?

If your doctor agrees that you can safely participate in more strenuous activities, consider senior sports or fitness classes that are offered at places such as the YMCA or local community centers. Types of classes that might be offered include dance, golf, yoga, exercise and others.

You can also consider swimming or water aerobics.

Exercising in the water is easier on sore joints, but has similar beneficial effects on cardiac health and improving muscle strength and flexibility.

Whatever activities you choose to do will help your overall health and feeling of wellbeing. Enjoy yourself!

Up, Up and Away On A “Flying Motorcycle”

heryl Ganch of Rio Rancho was born on Halloween – the perfect birthday for someone who loves to fly.

“I’m a good witch,” she says, though brooms are one of few things she has not taken to the air.

Ganch was 7 years old when a family vacation and a United Airlines DC-7 flew her above the Grand Canyon. She has adored flying since.

She has flown in hot air balloons, helicopters and even tried parasailing. In September, she gave herself an early birthday present – a one-hour flight on what she describes as a “flying motorcycle.”

“This was the best ever,” she said.

lbuquerque golfers have a new second-home opportunity in Southern Colorado with the grand opening of a second 18-hole golf course at The Glacier Club, an upscale resort community near Durango.

The course’s Labor Day weekend grand opening attracted about 250 members and guests. Multiple Grammy nominee Michael Martin Murphey performed a private concert. Dancers from the Southern Ute Indian Tribe blessed the course before co-designer Hale Irwin hit the ceremonial first tee shot.

would become the 18-hole Glacier Club Mountain Course opened in 2004, but a 1,000-acre land swap with the U.S. Forest Service required for the second nine took eight years to complete. The new nine, which traverses dramatic mountain terrain, was blasted out of ridges of native Rocky Mountain sandstone, quartzite and granite.

The challenges of working with such steep terrain, Irwin said, included finding a routing that could stand up to erosion, be properly irrigated, deliver maximum vistas, preserve home site values and, for playability, “find those spots that hit your happy button.”

The Par 71 7,035-yard Mountain Course rises and falls over 600 feet of elevation between 7,200 and 7,800 feet above sea level, although the most extreme elevation changes occur between one green and the next tee. The course has six miles of concrete cart paths. The $11 million 18-hole construction cost worked out to about $611,000 per hole, said Todd Schoeder, Irwin’s design partner in the project.

Now 72, he no longer plays tournament golf beyond a handful of Champions Tour appearances each year. Surprisingly, he said he has never enjoyed playing casual golf – and enjoys it even less so now that his game is no longer where he wants it to be.

“I didn’t want to be one of those guys so invested in my golf game that when it went away, I was left with nothing,” he said. Instead, family, friends and course design are his focus, he said.

Schoeder, whose Icon Design Works, Inc., has partnered with Irwin since 2001, said their division of labor breaks down into big picture versus details. “I’ll try to make something harder and Hale is always reining me in,” Schoeder said.

Schoeder’s other work includes design of the Gallery North Course in Marana, Ariz., a remodel of the Sunriver Resort’s Meadow Course in Oregon and a greens remodel of Angel Park Golf Club in Las Vegas.

Halloween “GHOULash.”

or the past four years, my cousin Catalina “Cata” Parker and I have been hosting a Halloween open house at my home. We serve side dishes that mark the end of summer and transition into fall. Some examples are roasted autumn vegetables, green chile stew and fun appetizers to conjure the spirits of the season - Frankenstein dip, eyeball deviled eggs and bewitching sweet treats. However, our featured dish has always been “GHOULash.”

This Hungarian goulash, courtesy of Paula Deen, feeds our large family, friends and any neighbors who drop by.

This delicious meal would also be great to serve during Balloon Fiesta weeks. It’s the perfect dish to warm you up after coming in from the cold, and it is tasty, hearty and not difficult or expensive to make.

We took Deen’s recipe, “Bobby’s Goulash,” and made it our own.

We use her basic recipe, which is labeled “healthy,” but we substitute spicy sausage for the ground turkey, which you can opt for to make it lower calorie.

The recipe calls for elbow macaroni, but you can buy Halloween Pasta online. You may also modify and use whole wheat pasta, or leave out the pasta altogether for a carb-free alternative. I also add about 1/2-1 teaspoon of chile seeds for more kick.

Ingredients: • 2 pounds lean ground beef • 1 package spicy sausage (I use Jimmy Dean’s) or 1 pound ground turkey • 2 large onions, chopped • 1 red bell pepper

• 3 cloves garlic, chopped • 3 cups water • Two 15-ounce cans tomato sauce • Two 15-ounce cans diced tomatoes • 2 tablespoons Italian seasoning • 3 bay leaves • 3 tablespoons soy sauce • 1 tablespoon House Seasoning, recipe follows • 1 tablespoon seasoned salt • 2 cups elbow macaroni, uncooked • 1/2 teaspoon chile seeds (or more to taste)

House Seasoning: • 1 cup salt • 1/4 cup pepper • 1/4 cup garlic powder Mix the ingredients together and store in an airtight container for up to six months.

Directions: In a Dutch oven, sauté the ground beef over medium-high heat until no pink remains. Break up the meat while sautéing. Spoon off some of the grease. Add the onions, red bell pepper and garlic to the pot, and sauté until they are tender, about five minutes. Add three cups of water, along with the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, Italian seasoning, bay leaves, soy sauce, House Seasoning and seasoned salt. Stir well. Place a lid on the pot and allow this to cook for 15 to 20 minutes. Add the elbow macaroni, stir well, return the lid to the pot, and simmer for about 30 minutes. Turn off the heat, remove the bay leaves, and allow the mixture to sit about 30 minutes more before serving.

What could be more festive and look more like a witches’ brew than a Bloody Sangria? There are no rules to sangria. Just add any fruit, fresh or frozen, that you like. To make your punch bowl more fun, add plastic spiders, hard candy eyes, gummy bugs, vampire fangs or any edible Halloween candy.

Ingredients: • 2 bottles red Spanish table wine • 1 cup brandy • 1/2 cup triple sec • 1 cup orange juice

• 1 cup pomegranate juice • 1/2 cup simple syrup, or more to taste (equal parts sugar and water, heated until sugar dissolves, cooled)

• Orange slices • Apple slices • Blackberries • Pomegranate seeds (I add frozen strawberries, raspberries, ginger beer or ginger ale, lemon or whatever I have on hand, and serve over ice)

Directions: Mix all ingredients and let stand in a tightly sealed container or pitcher for at least 24 hours in the refrigerator before serving.

Surrounded by welders, plasma cutters, grinders, a stereo blasting his favorite tunes, Chris Turri upcycles old metals and blends them with new to create contemporary figurative depictions of indigenous culture. Chris is not a recycler, he’s a fine artist collected worldwide who incorporates the “skins” of old vehicles from the 1940’s through 60’s to bring color and character to his work.

“Rewired” after twenty-five years as an electrician in southern New Mexico and a silversmith on the side, Chris ventured full time into the world of an artist. He focused his work in steel, copper and stainless steel using a combination of new and repurposed materials. Developing his own patinas and metal working techniques he found his niche.

Chris says, “I love to work with metal - it changes with

the seasons, gets better with time and the elements and yet is permanent.”

“I am a bit of a scavenger, we tend to throw away the best. I love the rich textures, the stories of the pieces I find buried in the salvage yards or even the side yards of places scattered throughout rural New Mexico. One of my latest finds is old display racks, ya know, from convenience stores.

I have developed techniques to make the most mundane materials become beaded shawls, headdresses and breast plates.

I love what I do.”

Native cultures tell stories of their people in a simpler time. Chris says “I incorporate universal symbols and a variety of petroglyphs to weave a tapestry of history, to help keep the stories alive and give rise to new ones.

He was recently commissioned to do a piece for a guy from the Pecos region in Texas. Chris was enthralled to incorporate new imagery and found that while the images differ slightly the messages resonate across tribes,

cultures and regions.

Most indigenous cultures throughout the world build masks for their ceremonies, using their own unique style and elements from their specific environment.

Chris commented “while there are differences, the familiarity establishes a deep connection between a world of peoples. I use patina on copper for the masks because it creates depth and color and breathes life into each face.”

“Some of my pieces tell a story but most are abstractions. The images just come together in my mind, and I must let them out. I often see how it is finished before I know how I will get to that point. The piece creates itself as I go.”

The Yellow Aspen Leaves Of The Santa Fe National Forest

right as a lantern globe, the yellow aspen leaves of the Santa Fe National Forest are a popular, if fleeting, fall attraction for those who choose to mark the changing of the seasons near the City Different.

The changing trees attract enough attention that Ski Santa Fe runs its Super Chief Quad Chair on weekends beginning in the middle of September, and provides the service every day during the nine days of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta – Oct. 7-15 this year.

Although the changing leaves don’t last as long as the summer wildflower and mushroom seasons, they provide a beautiful

close to summer for those fortunate enough to catch them.

“It’s a narrow window when you can see them at their peak,” says Ken Reese, silviculturist with the Santa Fe National Forest.

“It happens fast. It seems like you look up and think you need to get up there, and then the next weekend they are gone.”

Cold, rainy and windy weather can strip the leaves off the trees, and the aspens are always under attack from insects.

Aspen Vista Trail is a very popular hiking trail for leaf peeping, Reese says. The trailhead is approximately 13 miles from the Santa Fe Plaza, and the trail itself is 11.5 miles.

Reese says the aspen stand seen on this hike is old, the result of a fire in the 1890s.

If you are unable to hike, Ski Santa Fe is a fun and easy way to get in some great viewing. The fee is $15 roundtrip or $10 one way.

(Some people elect to take the chair up and hike down.)

Those shorter than 46 inches tall or 72 and older get to ride for free. The Super Chief Quad runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The chair also takes riders to the first hole on the Ski Santa Fe Disc Golf Course.

It’s an 18-hole course running from the high elevation of 11,564 feet down to the Ski Santa Fe base. Trail maps cost $2. The ski area suggests golfers take lots of water, sun screen and extra clothing in case there is a change in the weather.

Here’s why: The skin is the largest organ of the body and provides a formidable barrier against pathogens through an intricate immune system. It does so by being slightly acidic, dry, and filled with good bacteria that protect against environmental

Immune cells are located throughout the epidermis and the dermis of the skin. Dehydrated skin can provoke eczema, atopic dermatitis and can even inflame hair follicles leading to folliculitis. If you have skin problems, avoid aggressive tactics like dry brushing, which may scratch the surface, damaging the protective moisture layer. Gentle circular movements with a simple cotton cloth can help cleanse the skin.

Healthy skin can exfoliate itself, but when it lacks natural oils to do so, external oil is needed to nourish, repair and release dead skin cells.

Pure oils work better than water-based or chemicallybased creams and lotions.

Argan oil is rich in unsaturated fatty acids as well as vitamin E (twice as much as olive oil), phenols and carotenes.

These components reduce skin inflammation and protect sunexposed and damaged skin.

Argan is appropriate for acne, psoriasis, eczema, rosacea and wrinkles. It requires only a few drops to be rubbed into the skin, and it disappears without an oily residue. Argan oil is my favorite oil, and I would bathe in it if it weren’t $10 per ounce.

If you need to treat a large area of skin, lower cost options that belong in both the kitchen and the medicine cabinet might be a better first step. Organic extra virgin olive oil (labeled “First Cold Pressed”) costs only $1 per ounce. It is very high in antioxidants, polyphenols, squalene and fatty acids that treat, nourish and help to lock in skin moisture.

Organic coconut oil at 50 cents per ounce is another lower cost option and by far the best value.

It is rich in medium chain fatty acids, with about 50 percent being lauric acid (an antimicrobial that kills bacteria and viruses).

Coconut oil is an excellent choice for skin rashes, wounds, and fungal or yeast infections. It also works great as an oil-based cleanser, but acne sufferers beware - it can clog pores. Both olive and coconut oils are great to cover larger areas of the body such as legs or the scalp (dandruff). Neither absorbs into the skin like argan oil, so it may be best to apply overnight to allow the benefits to take effect.

Never oil feet without putting socks on immediately, and never apply oils in the shower. Both will result in a fall.

On top of all of the healing and protecting benefits argan, olive or coconut oils offer skin, they also minimize wrinkles and increase collagen and elastin. Make sure the oils you purchase aren’t “blends” of other ingredients. Cheaper oils won’t offer the same healing benefits and will be a waste of time. Begin with quality oil, rub it in where you need it, and voila, you’re on your way to healthier and more vibrant skin.

utumn is upon us. In addition to roasting green chiles, turning leaves, and the fast approach of Balloon Fiesta and the holidays, flu season is quickly approaching. So, your immunization should be, too.

You should get a flu shot annually.

Influenza vaccine has been available since the 1940s in an injectable, inactivated form. The year-to-year success of the influenza vaccine depends on the accuracy of the predictive models used to determine the strains expected during an upcoming influenza season.

For older adults, it’s best that you get your vaccine as early in the season as possible to prevent contracting the flu from a loved one, caregiver or friend. Flu season in the U.S. is typically between October

Immunizations Should Not Be Shots in the Dark and May, with peaks between December and February. This means it’s vital for you to get your shot before the holidays start. It’s important to note that it takes two weeks after getting the shot for your body to build up full immunity.

Older adults are also at higher risk when it comes to the flu due to agerelated immune system dysfunction, making it more difficult to fend off disease. This is especially true for seniors dealing with a chronic health condition like diabetes or heart disease. Hospitalization may result from a bout of flu in an immunityimpaired senior.

The Centers for Disease Control state that the flu vaccination is the best way to prevent the flu. Recently, a higher-dose version of the flu vaccine was created specifically for older adults.

The flu vaccine is an annual costfree Medicare Part B benefit.

Also important for some seniors is the pneumococcal vaccine, which protects seniors from lung infections (pneumonia), central nervous system

infections (meningitis) and sepsis (bloodstream infections) caused by pneumococcus. Pneumococcal disease accounts for more than 18,000 preventable senior deaths each year. This vaccine is conducted in two shots, spread one year apart, and is covered by Medicare Part B. No doubt you have seen the television ads about Zostavax, the shingles vaccine. Shingles is a painful skin rash that’s caused by the same virus responsible for chickenpox. While it is not as contagious as chickenpox, the complication of post-herpetic neuralgia is a real concern. One in three adults will develop shingles in their lifetime. The majority of the afflicted are older than 65. Shingles usually occurs when stressful situations arise: acute illness, familial stress, financial woes, etc.

The effectiveness of Zostavax seems to wane after five years.

So it behooves us to wait until at least 65 years.

Last but certainly not least is the hepatitis B vaccine. Hepatitis B is a contagious virus that infects the liver. In the acute illness, Hepatitis B’s symptoms mimic the flu, and only supportive measures are available. The chronic form is usually asymptomatic but can lead to liver damage and failure. Seniors at highest risk are diabetics, renal failure patients and anyone else who is potentially immunocompromised.

Most Americans are vaccinated against hepatitis B as infants. If you are not sure if you’ve been vaccinated or if you are in a situation where you may need to update your vaccination, contact your health care provider immediately. It will take approximately six months to complete the series of four injections.

Please take control of your health and be proactive. Call your health care provider to arrange a vaccination update. After shedding some light on senior vaccinations, good health is no longer a shot in the dark.

Volunteers receive mileage reimbursement, supplemental liability insurance, meals while on duty, pre-service and monthly trainings, and recognition throughout the year.

ssential oils can not only effectively repel and control most household pests, but they are also much safer than using standard, synthetic pesticides. You do have to be careful with essential oils, as some people have a reaction to them if it is applied to their skin as a repellent. You do not want to use essential oils on any of your pets as they can have bad reactions as well. If you are going to use the oils as an insect repellent on your body, just add a few drops (5 to 10 drops) to an ounce or two of extra virgin coconut oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, sesame oil or avocado oil. You can make a good tick repellent by adding lemongrass oil to water, mix it well and apply the mixture to clothing in unnoticeable areas, such as the inside of the pants legs and socks.

Use Essential Oils To Repel Household Pests Here are a few essential oils that are good insect repellents: cedarwood, eucalyptus, lavender, lemongrass, peppermint, rosemary, sage and spearmint.

When using essential oils, one way to apply them is to use a pistol-grip squirt bottle. Mix a few drops of the oil with some water, shake it up and start spraying the pests. If you are treating for ants, wipe out kitchen cabinets with a damp sponge and 6-8 drops of peppermint essential oil. Then place 3-5 drops of the oil on windowsills, doorway cracks and in the corners of the cabinets under your kitchen sink.

Centipedes, cockroaches, booklice, earwigs and silverfish can be controlled by placing several drops of peppermint or eucalyptus essential oils in areas that collect moisture, such as damp basements, garages and cabinets that house plumbing fixtures.

If you have black widows or other spiders in areas you don’t want them, you can spray the area with peppermint essential oil. That will prevent spiders from returning to these areas.

For mice, place several sprigs of fresh peppermint between pantry items in your cabinets, or make a solution of 2 cups water and 3 teaspoons of peppermint essential oil and spray wherever you find mouse droppings. You can also soak some cotton balls in peppermint essential oils and place in areas where you don’t want mice, inside or outside.

Essential oils may be the future of pest management in homes and in our schools, day care centers, hospitals, medical facilities and other public buildings. You can get essential oils in health food stores, or you can buy them online. Some of the more progressive pest control companies will be switching to these methods.

My goal is to reduce, and hopefully eliminate, the use of pesticides and assist home owners, schools and city, county and state governments practice non-toxic pest management.

I also would like to help any pest control company that wishes to switch to using the Pesticide Precautionary Principle.

How To Search For Forgotten 401(k) Money

ear Savvy Senior, How do I find an old 401(k) that I think I contributed money to at a former employer?

Approaching Retirement Dear Approaching, If you think you may have lost track of a 401(k) retirement account, you aren’t alone. As Americans jump from job to job, many leave scraps of their company sponsored 401(k) plans behind, believing they’ll deal with it later, but never do. To help you look for an old 401(k), here are some suggestions along with some free resources that can help you search.

Contact Employer The first way to find a previous 401(k) account is to contact your old employer’s human resources department. Ask them to check their plan records to see if you ever participated in their 401(k) plan, and if so, how much it’s worth. You’ll need to provide them your Social Security number and the dates you worked for them. in

They should be able to either get you the forms necessary to roll over your retirement money to a different 401(k) or to an IRA, or to give you contact information for any outside financial institution overseeing the plan on your employer’s behalf.

By following the appropriate instructions you get, you’ll be able to move your retirement money where you want.

If you don’t have contact information for your old employer, check your old records to see if you kept an old 401(k) statement.

Statements will typically have the information you need to get in contact with either your employer or a plan administrator.

If you need help tracking down your former employer because it may have moved, changed owners or merged with another firm, free help is available from sources like the Labor Department (AskEBSA. dol.gov, 866-444-3272) and the Pension Rights Center and Pension Action Center (PensionRights.org/ find-help).

and bankruptcies and may be able to help you dig up a plan’s most recently filed Form 5500, the annual report that must be filed with the IRS, PBGC and the Labor Department. This form contains the plan’s contact information and the employer’s identification number, which can be used to locate any plan that inherited the assets in a merger, acquisition or sale.

You can also find recently filed 5500s yourself at websites like FreeERISA.com.

Search Tools Finding a lost 401(k) account can be trickier if it’s worth less than $5,000, because your former employer can transfer the money to a default individual retirement account without consent. Your cash may go into an interest-bearing, federally insured bank account or to your state’s unclaimed property fund.

To search for a lost plan, use the National Registry of Unclaimed Retirement Benefits at UnclaimedRetirementBenefits. com. This website matches former employers with past employees who

have unclaimed retirement funds.

This is a secure and free service, but you’ll need to provide your Social Security number to search.

It can also be challenging to track down a lost 401(k) account if your former employer goes bankrupt and abandons the plan. In this case, use the U.S. Department of Labor’s Abandoned Plan Database at AskEBSA.dol.gov/ abandonedplansearch.

Starting in 2018, the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC.gov) will start accepting transfers of missing participants’ accounts from terminating 401(k) plans. When the participants are found, it will pay them that money plus interest. The agency also plans to launch a registry of terminated 401(k) plans that sent money elsewhere, so missing participants can more easily find their accounts.
