all Feast Days held by a majority of New Mexico’s 19 pueblos are not only of great cultural significance to tribal members but have also become festivities revered and highly-anticipated by non-Natives in New Mexico. In many cases, the pueblos graciously invite the general public to share in the festivities.

Feast Days have become the celebration of the hybridization of traditional tribal ceremonies and Catholic religious influences that Spaniards brought to the Pueblo world centuries after the ancient Ancestral Pueblo people inhabited the land.

The Spaniards sought to impose their religion and its symbols on tribes in an attempt to eradicate Indigenous spiritual practices. Today, the Feast Days feature traditional religious dances, Native food and artwork, as well as a Catholic Mass and often a procession of a patron saint.

Jon Ghahate, a member of the Laguna and Zuni Pueblos and museum cultural educator at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque, said Pueblo celebrations are to commemorate the passage of

time and seasons, observe the Solstice, and observe the harvest, and have always been intrinsic to the culture: “Whatever Pueblo people received - the corn, the beans, the squash, the rain, the earth, the air - everything that is elemental to who we are, we see them as gifts. In doing so, we are respectful to the Givers of those gifts.

Now we say to the community, and now to an even greater population, ‘We share our gifts with you.’ So, if you go to a pueblo and someone says, ‘Come, sit down at our table.

Come and eat,’ that’s that reciprocal component of giving back to the community. There’s no exclusionary definition of who can and who cannot participate.”

However, non-Native visitors should be aware of cultural differences and sensitivities any time they visit a pueblo, and especially respectful during Feast Days. While many pueblos are open to visitors in general, there may be specific times when certain ceremonies and rituals are closed to the public.

because they’re based on a spiritual construct, versus a social celebration,” Ghahate said.

He recommends checking the individual pueblo websites, calling individual pueblos or reviewing the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center website for the privacy expectations of events. Most pueblos do not allow photography or audio or video recordings of any kind, so cameras should be left at home.

“It’s a right of ownership, the right of owning our story,” Ghahate said. “Historically, ethnographers or researchers have obtained information that has often either been misconstrued, misappropriated and/ or misinterpreted. As a result, some indigenous communities are protective and media is restricted. … We want to make sure that whatever narrative that is available to the public is authentic, credible and truly respectful of our communities as a whole.”

To that end, the Cultural Center is hosting the Inaugural New Mexico Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. October 14. It will involve multiple tribes, be open to the public, and include a tribal entry parade, dignitaries, Native dances, speakers and special guests.

Presbyterian Provides Free Medication Take-Back Program

P

resbyterian Healthcare Services now offers a convenient medication takeback program for easy disposal of leftover, unused and out-of-date prescription and over-the counter medications at nine hospitals in New Mexico.

Unused medications in the home can contribute to drug abuse. Twothirds of teens and young adults who abuse prescription medicine get them from friends or family, including the family medicine cabinet, according to the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids. More than 17,000 people die each year from prescription opioids, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“We want to help provide a safe, easy way for people to clean out their medicine cabinets and dispose of leftover prescription

medications,” said Erica Downing, executive director of Pharmacy Services at Presbyterian Healthcare Services. “We also want to remind people that they should not flush drugs down the toilet because trace amounts can appear in community drinking water.

We encourage anyone in our community to come in and look for the big green receptacle to drop off unused medications.”

There are some items that can’t be deposited in receptacles, such as inhalers and needles, but staff at each site will be available if needed for questions.

The Journey Of The Dead Man

O

ne of the most frequently mistranslated place names in New Mexico is Jornada del Muerto. This 90-mile stretch of desert south of Socorro was once a part of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, the main road linking Santa Fe with Mexico City in colonial times. The best translation would be something like “Dead Man’s Route,” but in tourist literature it’s often melodramatically rendered as “Journey of Death,” which makes you wonder why anyone in their right mind would want to travel it.

In fact, the Jornada, although mostly waterless, was the preferred route. It was many miles shorter than following the Rio Grande, which makes a broad bend to the west, and the terrain was flat, so wagons drawn by mules or oxen could make better time. The flat terrain also discouraged ambush by bandits or hostile Indians.

Nevertheless, this shortcut had its perils, and travelers did occasionally perish in the desert. One of these was a German trader, Bernardo Gruber, whose fate probably gave the Jornada its name.

Gruber’s home was in Sonora, south of present-day Arizona, but

his business activities frequently took him to New Mexico, where he was known by his nickname, el Alemán, “the German.” He was apparently prosperous and well-liked.

The winter of 1667-’68 found him sojourning in the Salinas Pueblos district near the southern end of the Manzano Mountains.

On Christmas Day, Gruber went to Mass at the mission church at Quarai and climbed into the choir loft, where he began handing out slips of paper to members of the choir. On the papers were written the letters “ABNA” and “ADNA,” alongside three crosses.

This, he said, was a cabalistic charm he had been taught as a child in Germany; a person who swallowed one of the papers would be invulnerable to any weapon for 24 hours. But it was effective only at Christmas.

Gruber was a hard-headed businessman, and why he would put credence in such nonsense is a mystery. Some said he was drunk.

Word of the incident soon reached the ears of Fray Juan de Paz, an officer of the Inquisition, who did not take the news lightly. This was clearly sorcery. Even worse, Gruber had committed this offense in a church, during Mass, on one of the holiest days of the year. Drunk or not, he must

not go unpunished. After a lengthy investigation, Paz ordered his arrest.

Gruber was imprisoned for several weeks at the mission of Abó, then taken to the estancia of Captain Francisco de Ortega near Sandía Pueblo. There he was kept shackled in a small cell for nearly two years while Paz delayed sending him to Mexico City for trial, as he was required to do.

Meanwhile, Gruber’s property, which was considerable, was impounded by the church.

In desperation, Gruber plotted his escape. Aided by his young Apache servant, Atanasio, and one of his guards, whom he had bribed, he began secretly to gather the supplies he would need for his flight. Finally, faking an illness, he managed to persuade Capt. Ortega to allow the guards to remove his shackles.

Around 3 a.m. June 22, 1670, Gruber and Atanasio rode off, mounted on horses taken from Ortega’s corral and armed with a stolen musket and other weapons.

As soon as the jailbreak was discovered, Ortega set off in pursuit but had no luck enlisting the help of fellow citizens. Everyone in the Río Abajo country had heard about Gruber’s case, and most believed that he had already suffered enough for his

minor transgression. Gruber and his servant continued their journey south unimpeded, and for a time it appeared he had made good his escape.

Several miles outside of Socorro they left the river and set out across the desert but found all the water holes dry. The single water jar they carried with them was soon empty.

Taking the jar, Atanasio rode on ahead in search of water. Finding none, he returned to the Rio Grande, but as he rode back, the jar fell from his saddle and broke. Returning again to the river, he soaked a saddle blanket in the water, then rode all night, hoping that it might at least be wet enough to slake his master’s thirst by the time he got back. But when he reached their campsite, Gruber was gone. Atanasio searched for him without success, then rode back to Socorro, where he gave a statement to the authorities.

Nearly a month passed before Gruber’s body—or what was left of it—was found. Wild animals had scattered his bones, but enough of his clothing remained to confirm that it was Gruber. His horse was also found dead, still tethered to a tree.

In addition to the Jornada, the nearby settlement of Aleman also honors the memory of the unfortunate German.

GAMA Foundation Launches Public Education Series On Community Health

he Greater Albuquerque Medical Association has created a foundation designed to help inform the public about pressing health care issues. Among the new GAMA Foundation’s projects is the launch in November of a free public education speaker series.

The first topic, Unraveling New Mexico’s Cognitive Decline, is scheduled for 7-8 p.m. Nov. 6 in Sandia Preparatory School’s auditorium, 532 Osuna Road NE. It will focus on the overwhelming impact of dementia for patients and their families.

About 41,000 New Mexico residents live with Alzheimer’s and are cared for by 107,000 unpaid caregivers, many of whom are relatives of the afflicted.

The speaker lineup consists of Dr. Janice Knoefel, a local neurologist specializing in dementia; Anderson Riddle, a study coordinator for Albuquerque Neuroscience, Inc., focusing on dementia research; and Tim Sheehan, executive

director for the Alzheimer’s Association of New Mexico, which provides services and support to dementia patients and their families.

Their talks will help the audience understand the definition of dementia, learn how to recognize symptoms, understand methods of diagnosis and treatment options, explore possible causes as well as the links between aging and health, and discuss action you can take to help prevent the disease.

The GAMA Foundation was created to support the continual improvement of community health, said its president, Dr. Mihaela Bujoi. It was spurred by the Greater Albuquerque Medical Association Board’s commitment to providing the public with access to accurate health care information.

relationship with a primary care provider (PCP). The relationship between the PCP and the patient allows for conversations about what type of health care is available and how best to access it. I would encourage everyone to get the hours of operation, phone numbers and addresses of the health care resources that they might need, even before they need such care. That way, if something comes up, it’s easy to know what to do. Important resources include your primary care office, specialty care offices, care management team, urgent care centers and hospitals.

Dr. Sun: Do you have any thoughts on immunizations or other preventive health care for seniors to think about as we head into the fall?

Dr. Wilson: Yes. Influenza, or the flu, can cause serious respiratory distress, particularly for seniors with chronic lung diseases — such as COPD, asthma and pulmonary fibrosis — as well as those with heart disease, especially congestive heart failure. Talk to your PCP, specialist or pharmacist about the flu and which vaccine is best for you. Also, there are two pneumonia vaccines that are recommended for seniors. Talk to your health care provider and find out if you are due for this important protective immunization.

Dr. Sun: There have been some exciting changes with your medical group. What can you share with our readers?

Dr. Wilson: The most exciting news is that we are growing. We have hired 34 clinicians this year and prioritized better primary care access for our community.

We have hired 18 PCPs and have 11 more PCPs than we had at the beginning of the year.

This means that we can provide primary care access today or tomorrow for almost anyone who calls in. We have also hired some critical specialists — including two gastroenterology physicians, another neurology clinician and a breast surgeon — who will all be starting in the next few weeks.

I’m also happy to report that we have doubled our capacity in dermatology and endocrinology.

Dr. Sun: What updates do you have on services and specialties that are available to seniors at DaVita Medical Group?

Dr. Wilson: DaVita Medical Group offers primary care and specialty care in just over 30 medical and surgical specialties.

We also have a care management department that helps patients navigate the complicated health care system and coordinate their care with clinical teams. We are also proud to offer our senior patients a truly comprehensive annual visit; this includes a no-charge visit with a medical assistant for 30 to 45 minutes to review any and all medical concerns, and then a follow-up appointment with a clinician for an additional 30 minutes. Medicare Annual Election Period

he 2020 Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plan Annual Election Period begins Oct. 15 and runs through Dec. 7.

For those new to the Annual Election Period, or AEP, the process may seem confusing or even overwhelming. However, plan providers want to make choosing options easy for seniors who are either in the market for new coverage or who have existing Medicare plans and may want to make changes.

“Members are going to receive the Annual Notice of Change from Medicare providers,” said Janice Torrez, vice president of external affairs and chief of staff for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico. “One thing seniors will find important is this notice regarding their health care, as it plays an important part in their lives.

“We’re really excited that we’re maintaining our zero-dollar premiums and zero-dollar copays on office visits,” Torrez said. “We recognize it’s critical for seniors to understand their options and access to health care, and to stay healthy by maintaining these benefits. And our big news this year is that BCBSNM is expanding coverage into Dona Ana County.”

BCBSNM has also added Dual Care Plus, a plan for those with special needs who are dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid together. Benefits like transportation, vision, dental and in-home visits will be included.

This program will be expanding into Santa Fe and Dona Ana counties, as well.

An additional over-the-counter benefit will be the ability to purchase items such as toothpaste, adhesive bandages and vitamins through a convenient mail order service.

BCBSNM is continuing to emphasize the importance of preventive care, and to that end is offering several upcoming meetings and seminars. The provider has also retained its Silver Sneakers fitness program, which encourages prevention of disease through healthy living.

It offers a gym membership and access to other wellness benefits through the BCBSNM website.

Members who take preventive action for their health, such as getting an annual physical, a bone density test or a mammogram, can even take advantage of rewards up to $100 that can be accessed online post-testing either as a gift card or through vendors.

In addition, the 24th annual Prime Time 50+ Expo is scheduled for October 16 and is sponsored in part by BCBSNM. Blue Cross Blue Shield will have representatives at the event, available to speak one-on-one with attendees about policies and options.

“Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico has proudly supported the Prime Time Expo for the past six years,” Torrez said. “We are committed to promoting the health and wellness of older adults in New Mexico, and the Prime Time Expo provides a valuable community resource for participants to access health screenings and information on senior health.

Humana’s Central West Region Medicare president, Mark Iorio, advises seniors new to the process of the AEP to keep a few considerations in mind when selecting a plan: • Cost of buying the plan (monthly premium) • Costs of using the plan (deductibles, coinsurance and copayments) • Maximum out-of-pocket you might have to pay in case of a serious health event “Learn about the doctor and hospital networks included in

each plan. Are your physicians and preferred hospitals included?” Iorio said, adding that it is important to understand the key differences between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans.

“Review your medical and health care expenses for the past year, and think about your budget and health needs for the coming year,” he said. “Make a list of your medications and research drug coverage and formularies – the list of drugs a Medicare prescription drug plan covers and consider mail-order as you evaluate your drug plan options.”

New this year for Humana will be the offering of Medicare Advantage plans in Lea and Eddy counties.

Also new this year: “The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is allowing Medicare Advantage plans to include certain benefit offerings that address social determinants of health,” Iorio said. “‘Social determinants’ are the advantages and disadvantages that make up our daily lives.

Some determinants, such as culture and economic status, are circumstances we’re born into. Other social determinants include where we live, accessibility to nutritious food, safe and affordable housing and transportation options, affordable medical and dental care, and ability to socialize and partake in physical activities.”

Depression In Seniors

D

epression can strike at any age, for any reason or no reason at all. However, its prevalence among seniors may be greater as a result of inactivity, loneliness, grief, medication side effects, or as the result of physical health problems. It is not a choice; nor is it a normal part of aging.

Late-life depression affects about 6 million Americans ages 65 and older, but only 10 percent receive treatment for it, according to WebMD. Reasons for lack of treatment range from stigma associated with mental health disorders among older populations, to inability of the individual or his/her relatives to recognize its symptoms. Spotting depression in seniors can be more complicated because its symptoms may resemble other illnesses.

“Sometimes people don’t know they have depression,” said gerontologist Asia NegronEsposito, who conducts workshops about aging for AARP. “They may be having symptoms that are interfering with everyday

life. They’re staying home alone, not socializing, maybe not eating.

These may be things their adult children can look for. It becomes clinical depression when you can’t get over these things by yourself.

“I try and help them identify when their feelings of loss or grief are not normal, and possibly clinical,” she said.

In addition to side effects from prescription of over-the-counter drugs, she said, divorce, loss of income, loneliness and isolation can lead to depressed feelings.

“Isolation is a killer. For anyone who feels isolated, they can start losing track of reality,” she said.

Even poor nutrition can contribute to mood changes. “As we age, the body works very hard, our organs are slowing down, sometimes we’re under chronic stress or have chronic disease,”

Negron-Esposito said.

Another major determinant in experiencing depression is grief from a recent loss, said Emerson Corley, a clinical social worker in Albuquerque specializing in grief therapy. For those who have endured the loss of a spouse, the changing of seasons can bring to the surface unexpected emotions.

“As we move into the fall, we move into the holidays, which can trigger all kinds of other memories,” said Corley. “Grief has a way of triggering really great moments, but some really sad memories, too.

“We all have these moments, but I think they’re especially prevalent in seniors. They’ve lived a lot of life already, experienced a lot of loss already, and if you’ve lost a spouse in the last year or so and you haven’t worked on that loss, then this is going to hit you especially hard,” she said.

She advises that people should be cognizant of certain “triggers” that may activate their depression.

Being purposefully aware that the triggers are likely to occur

can help defray their power. “It’s important to think ahead and ask yourself, ‘Who have I lost?’ and ‘What did they mean to me?’

During the holidays you need to ask yourself, ‘What did we do together, what am I missing?’ If you don’t look grief square in the eyes, it will take you over.”

It’s also important for seniors to surround themselves with supportive people. Having others who will simply listen is empowering. “Seek out a friend who gets you, someone who can sit in the moment. Feel it, it’s completely normal. Know these triggers are going to happen, so roll with it. And don’t be afraid to ask for help,” Corley said.

Seniors come from a generation that was taught to buck up, be strong and take care of yourself in difficult times; seeking assistance, especially for possible mental health problems was frowned upon much more so than it is today, Negron-Esposito said. “Our elders come from that era, that it’s shameful to have any emotional

issues. So, some people ignore the signs.”

However, clinical depression is not something that a person just “gets over” or “pushes through.” It interferes with daily life for weeks or months at a time and requires treatment to get better. Sometimes, it requires a friend or relative to detect that there is a problem that goes beyond normal grief, sadness or lethargy. According to the National Institute on Aging, signs may include: • Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood • Feelings of hopelessness, guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness • Irritability, restlessness, or having trouble sitting still • Loss of interest in once pleasurable activities, including sex • Decreased energy or fatigue • Moving or talking more slowly • Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions • Difficulty sleeping, earlymorning awakening, or oversleeping • Eating more or less than usual, usually with unplanned weight gain or loss • Thoughts of death or suicide, or suicide attempts • Aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems without a clear physical cause and/

or that do not ease with treatment • Frequent crying To determine whether professional intervention is necessary, Negron-Esposito said it’s important to start with your primary care doctor. “They can do a full panel neurologicalpsychological workup to see what’s going on in your system.

Folks can be predisposed chemically to depression. This may resolve the issue through medication. If not, the next step is to see a psychologist for an evaluation.”

If in doubt about whether the sadness you or a loved one is feeling is a normal response to a trigger or whether it’s something more serious, don’t wait to get diagnosed.

While older adults only account for 12 percent of the U.S. population, they account for 18 percent of suicide deaths, according to the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. Additionally, this risk increases with age; 75to 85-year-olds having higher rates of suicide than those who are between 65 and 75, and individuals 85 or older have the highest risk yet. The numbers are higher for men, especially for single men.

Dr. Alidina has been with NMCC since 2005 and has been practicing in the field for almost 30 years. Dr. Alidina’s dedication to helping cancer patients and increasing access to care for

all people led him to Tanzania for two years to work as an oncologist at Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam. Dr. Alidina has also held a variety of teaching roles through the course of his career, including as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of New Mexico from 2005 through 2014. Dr. Alidina’s presentation will be on “Cancer screenings at every age”

Dr. Bansal joined NMCC in 2017 after completing his fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at the University of New Mexico. He has authored multiple articles on the topics of gastrointestinal and lung cancers and has a keen interest in targeted therapy and immunotherapy for lung cancer. As the Clinical Research Director, Dr. Bansal also oversees the clinical trials program.

The show, which debuted at the Albuquerque Museum’s 2018 “Under the Stars Summer Series,” features two hours of hits, including Fly Me to the Moon, Come Fly with Me, I’ve Got You Under My Skin, Mack the Knife, Hello, Young Lovers and Beyond the Sea. Last year’s performance, which was presented by the New Mexico Jazz Workshop, sold out and won the Weekly Alibi’s Best of Burque Music Showcase “Best Performance of 2018.”

“We couldn’t be happier to do it again for such an incredible organization in our community,” Corley said of benefitting the Domestic Violence Resource Center.

Corley just happens to be a clinical social worker in Albuquerque.

Her affinity for jazz combined with her job specializing in grief counseling and the racial tensions she observed growing up

Her musically-inclined family also encouraged her early on to pursue formal training and education in music. She received her bachelor’s degree of music in vocal performance from Centenary College of Louisiana, Shreveport, and her master’s degree of music in vocal performance from New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.

A classically trained opera singer, Corley later transitioned to jazz, now performing 50-plus gigs with the entourage annually in Albuquerque.

It was after a performance downtown at Hotel Andaluz last year that the band met Frank Sinatra’s harpist, Lisa Coffey, who intends to play with the band at the Kimo performance.

“Entourage Jazz Swings Bobby & Frank: Honoring the Music and Persona of Bobby Darin and Frank Sinatra,” is scheduled for 2 p.m.

How To Help Aging Parents Manage Their Medications

D

ear Savvy Senior, What tips or tools can you recommend that can help seniors and their caregivers keep up with medications? My 82-year-old mother, who lives alone, is supposed to take several different medications at various times of the day but often forgets.

Working Daughter Dear Working, Anybody who juggles multiple medications can relate to the problem of forgetting to take a medication, or not remembering whether they already took it. This is especially true for older adults who take medications at varying times of the day. Here are some different product and service solutions that may help.

Simple Medication Helpers Getting organized and being reminded are the two keys to staying on top of a medication schedule. To help your mom achieve this, there are a wide variety of pillboxes, medication organizers, vibrating watches, beeping pill bottles and even dispensers that will talk to her that can make all the difference. To find these types of products, the best source is Epill.com, where you’ll find dozens to choose from.

You can also help your mom stay organized by creating a simple medication list that breaks down exactly what she should take and when she should take it. To help you with this, go to SafeMedication.com – a resource from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists – and download and print a copy of “My Medicine List.”

Smart Pill Boxes There are also a variety of “smart” pill boxes on the market today that will remind your mom when she needs to take her medicine and will send family members and caregivers notifications if she forgets to take her pills, or accidentally takes the wrong ones.

Three to consider here include Tricella (Tricella.com, $95), which uses Bluetooth connectivity but requires that your mom have a smartphone with data service or tablet with Wi-Fi;

PillDrill (PillDrill.com, $279), a comprehensive system ideal for strict medication schedules but requires home Wi-Fi; and MedMinder (MedMinder.com, $40 per month), that operates off a cellular network (no phone line or Wi-Fi necessary).

Convenient Packaging Another way to help simplify your mom’s medication use is to get her prescriptions filled in single-dose packets that put all her medications (vitamins and over-the-counter drugs can be included too) together in neatly labeled packets organized by date and the time of day they should be taken. This does away with all the pill bottles and pill sorting. One of the top providers of this type of service is PillPack.com, an online pharmacy owned by Amazon.

Apps and Calling Services If you mom has a smartphone, there are apps she could use to help her keep up with her medication.

One of the best is Medisafe (MyMedisafe.com), a free app works on Apple and Android phones. Medisafe will organize your mom’s pills in one place, send her timely notifications to take her meds, and send her reminders to fill her prescriptions.

Caregivers can also connect with the Medisafe app to get notifications about when it’s time for their loved one to take their medication – and they can see whether or not it’s been marked as taken.

If your mom doesn’t use a smartphone, there are also calling services, like Care Call Reassurance, which provides medication reminding calls – see MedicationReminders.com. This service will call your mom’s phone at the scheduled times she needs to take her medication as a reminder, and if she fails to answer or acknowledge the call, a family member or caregiver will be contacted. This service runs between $15 and $20 per month.

esticides are weapons of mass destruction and should almost never be used, in my opinion. The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act prohibits pesticide manufacturers from stating that their pesticides are safe on the label. However,

many exterminators and others who use pesticides like to claim the pesticides they use are safe.

They are not. If a pesticide label contains a “signal word” – “Caution,” “Warning” or “Danger” - it is not safe.

Many pest control companies spray baseboards in homes as part of their method to control pests.

I asked my boss when I started in the business over 45 years ago why we spray baseboards.

He said we have to make the customer think they are getting their money’s worth. That was true then and it is true now. It is a gimmick and nothing more. Very few pests run along the baseboards in a house. Spraying those areas exposes children and pets to the spray’s hazards. Some pest control companies also power spray pesticides around the perimeters of homes, and that is equally bad. That method of spraying may kill a few cockroaches,

but it also kills beneficial insects, such as praying mantids. More importantly, many songbirds will eat insects, and when they eat insects sprayed with pesticides it can kill them or seriously compromise their health. Insecteating songbirds are legally protected in New Mexico.

Pesticides should never be power sprayed around homes. There are non-toxic methods for controlling pests inside and outside your home.

Mosquito spraying is the epitome of pesticide pollution.

It kills very few mosquitoes but will kill other insects that feed on mosquitoes. It can kill or harm nesting birds in the area, as well as other animals. It will also chase away bats, which is especially counterproductive since one bat can eat 1,000 mosquitos in one night. It will also kill important pollinators like honeybees.

Larvicides are far more effective, as is public education. People can learn how to control mosquitoes on their own property without the use of toxic pesticides.

Not everyone is negatively affected by pesticides, but children and people with certain health issues, such as Multiple

Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), can be seriously injured by pesticide exposure. Nobody should be exposed to toxic pesticides.

The Environmental Protection Agency does not test pesticides.

The manufacturers of pesticides “test” them and give the results to the EPA, which then approves them. The EPA will occasionally ban some pesticides after many people have been made sick or died. DDT, chlordane and many others were used for years until they were finally banned. Why expose anyone to any pesticides unless they are proven safe?

If you use an exterminator who wants to spray for mosquitoes, require them to sign a document saying they will be financially responsible for all medical or veterinary bills caused by the pesticides. If they refuse, don’t hire them.

Foster Grandparent volunteers must be willing to serve an average of 20 hours per week and must be able to pass a background check, physical, and tuberculosis test. Foster Grandparent volunteers serve one-on-one with children, working with them to build their social and emotional development as well as help improve their literacy skills. Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at Presbyterian and UNM Hospitals The Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at Presbyterian and UNM hospitals offer a place for parents to rest and regroup right at the hospital, just moments away from their sick child. The Family Rooms are open seven days a week and are staffed by hospital volunteers. The Family room volunteers greet families, maintain visitor data, stock food, drinks, and help families with their needs. Volunteers are asked to work one, three hour shift per week. orgetfulness occurs more frequently as we get older.

While some individuals believe forgetfulness is a normal part of aging, there are some who fear it to be the first sign of

To a degree, some memory loss can be attributed to benign forgetfulness. Or, there are a variety of medical conditions that may be to blame.

Thyroid imbalances, medication side-effects, vitamin deficiencies, substance abuse, stress, anxiety, depression, unrestorative sleep and electrolyte abnormalities are some conditions than can result in memory deficits. Most of theses maladies can be treated effectively when recognized early.

A lesser known condition called

pseudodementia may also be possible. The term describes a condition in which deteriorating cognition is present along with depression. Memory impairment, naming dysfunction, executive function deficits along with lack of pleasure in hobbies, change in appetite and sleep disturbances may be the predominant symptoms.

Pseudodementia patients often suffer from loss of recent and remote memory, characterized by patchy or specific memory impairment. They gave frequent “Don’t know” answers while maintaining their attention and concentration.

The name implies that there are cognitive changes, but these changes are unrelated to the neurodegenerative processes involved in dementia.

The timely recognition and treatment of depression in the elderly is thus important to prevent the consequences of disease progression. Typically, seniors don’t have one solitary condition but rather a multitude of illnesses.

This can often delay or obscure a clear diagnosis.

Trying to tease out the differences between pseudodementia and dementia can often be difficult. Dementia and depression can co-exist.

Many attempts to differentiate by neurological testing have only shown subtle differences and often many similarities. However, pseudodementia is often reversible with treatment. If deficits persist after treatment, dementia may be playing a more significant role.

Be aware of any new changes in mood, personality, memory, speech, appetite or sleep. The risk of developing depression before age 75 is approximately 23 percent.

At any one point in time depression affects up to 16 percent of seniors.

In the oven: Set oven at 400 degrees F Roast on a baking sheet for 30 minutes until desired tenderness Dress cubed (or whole) butternut squash with olive oil Savory: Garlic, salt & pepper, or an herb blend Sweet: Cinnamon, black pepper, fresh rosemary As a soup: Heat three tablespoons of olive oil in a soup pot. Begin sautéing a diced onion, carrot and celery stalk in the pot first. When they become slightly tender add two bags of frozen (or four cups of fresh) butternut squash. Season with thyme, sea salt and black pepper to taste. Add four cups of vegetable or chicken broth and boil for about 30 minutes. Blend in a blender to puree. Serve hot or cold with toasted almonds, your favorite cheese, apple slices, or herbs.
