Tips From A Scammer On How To Avoid Scams

F

rank Abagnale, Jr., gained notoriety as one of the greatest imposters of the 20th century, posing as a pilot, a doctor and a lawyer. He got away with it for five years until his arrest at age 21. The 2002 movie “Catch Me if You Can,” in which Abagnale was portrayed by actor Leonardo DiCaprio, depicted his almost unbelievable crime spree.

As a condition of his early release from prison, Abagnale worked with the FBI to uncover check forgery scams, and he has since become a top consumer fraud expert.

Abagnale, now 60, spoke with AARP recently, sharing his expertise on the subject of scams and fraud and how they can affect seniors. All information from him that follows was taken from that interview.

“Scams cost Americans $900 billion a year. Compare that number to our country’s $700 billion budget,” Abagnale said.

“There are 37 billion dollars stolen from seniors annually. It can cost them their homes, their pensions, their savings.

“Anyone can be scammed,” he said, “including myself and highly intelligent people.”

In one prevalent scam, the thief calls grandparents to tell them that their grandchild is in trouble and asks for them to post bail money.

The caller ID comes up as the police department.

“The caller will try and convince you that action is required immediately,” Abagnale said.

But he warns not to act on panic, advising there are things you can do to determine the authenticity of the caller.

“First of all, be a little suspicious; it’s an asset to be so. Innocent folks don’t think like a scammer.”

If you receive a phone call from a scam artist, Abagnale says to hang up and call police. “Do not call the number back from which they called you.”

In fraudulent situations, he says, requests or demands for either money or personal information should arouse suspicion. Always verify who you’re talking to. Never give out your personal information over the phone. And don’t ever give or loan money to someone you don’t know.

Another scam that has affected older Americans is called the “romance scam.” In this case, lonely singles become the victims of perpetrators attempting to con them out of often large sums of money.

Other fraudulent ploys include “phishing,” which are convincing due to their personal nature and which seek personal details.

“Let’s say you’ve posted information on Facebook about going to lunch with your girlfriend. A con artist can use that information, especially if your social media accounts aren’t set to “private,” to follow up (with you).

They are very sophisticated scams and believable enough to trick you into inadvertently giving out private information when you ‘bite.’”

These scams are in 115 countries, with $12 billion in losses, he said, adding that banks have begun calling people to verify large sums of wire transfers as a result of this.

Abagnale also discussed spoofing.

This scam involves robocalls, the majority of which come from overseas using a manipulated caller ID. The recipient may even recognize it as being from a familiar source – the IRS, for example.

“These are orchestrated by large organizations, like a Russian gang that brings in millions of dollars a year. They look and sound legitimate,” Abagnale said.

Sometimes a scammer will lead you to say the word “yes” during a recorded phone conversation, only to later use that as evidence of your verbal agreement to certain charges or purchases. Then they’ll threaten to sue if you don’t pay.

In addition to Abagnale’s advice for how to handle these specific scams, he also shared some tips to use regularly to help protect your identity: • Use micro shredders that cut paper to the size of a piece of rice.

• Use a credit monitoring service, such as CreditKarma.com, which allows you to keep track of your credit score for free.

• Limit your use of personal checks.

• Use a credit card over a debit card. “The bank can take two months to research alleged fraud and replace money in an account,” Abagnale said. “When a credit card is used, the resolution is faster, usually with a call to the bank or credit card agency.”

San Felipe Who?

he church of San Felipe de Neri on Albuquerque’s Old Town Plaza celebrates the feast day of its patron saint May 26. So, perhaps this would be an appropriate time to recall the history of this venerable institution.

When the Villa de Alburquerque was established in 1706, a church was one of the first buildings erected, as required by Spanish colonial law.

This original church stood on the west side of the plaza, facing east. Its exact location was a mystery for many years, but excavations carried out in the 1980s uncovered its foundations about where Plaza Don Luis stands today. The convento, or friary, where the priest and lay brothers lived, was just to the south.

A camposanto, or graveyard, extended to the east, under present-day Romero Street. The plaza then was much larger than it is today, extending north at least as far as Church Street.

In his official report to the viceroy in Mexico City describing the new town he had founded, acting Gov. Francisco Cuervo y Valdes wrote that he had chosen “the glorious Apostle to the Indies, San Francisco Xavier” to be its patron saint. Not coincidently, Francisco was also the given name of the viceroy, Don Francisco Fernandez de la Cueva Enriquez, Tenth Duke of

Alburquerque. The viceroy, however, insisted that the patron of the new villa be San Felipe Neri, to honor his own superior, King Felipe V of Spain.

For some reason, news of this change did not reach parishioners here for decades, or if it did, they chose to ignore it, preferring to continue to venerate San Francisco Xavier, whose name had long been associated with the area. It was not until 1776 that a visiting church official, Fray Francisco Atanasio Dominguez, noticed this impropriety and ordered the image of San Francisco at the center of the reredos, or altar screen, to be taken down and replaced with an old painting of San Felipe Neri he had discovered in a church storeroom. Thereafter, Dominguez cautioned them that San Felipe, not San Francisco, was to be regarded as the parish’s titular patron.

But his injunction was not always obeyed, and even today a statue of St. Francis Xavier still stands to the left of St. Philip Neri behind the altar.

Some confusion still persists as to his name. It is commonly rendered as “San Felipe de Neri,” but the “de” is superfluous. He was not “of” a place called Neri; Neri was his surname. He was born in Florence, Italy, in 1515.

At the age of 18, he went to Rome, where he founded a lay order and later was ordained a priest. A publication of the local parish describes him as

“one of the Catholic Church’s most lovable saints . . . known for his playful sense of humor.” He lived a long and apparently happy life, and died of natural causes in 1595.

No paintings or sketches of the original church survive, but Fray Dominguez left a fairly detailed written description. It was typical of New Mexico mission churches of that era, with a long, narrow nave and a dirt floor. A transverse clerestory window above the altar allowed the sun to slant in, bathing the altar in dazzling sunlight during morning Mass. It stood until 1792, when its adobe walls and roof, saturated by heavy rains, collapsed.

The present church, also constructed of adobes and terrones (blocks of cut sod), was dedicated the following year.

It has undergone numerous alterations and additions over the 226 years since.

Soon after arriving in New Mexico in 1851, Bishop (later Archbishop) Jean Baptiste Lamy set about rebuilding and remodeling New Mexico’s rude mudbrick churches to conform to his own European ideas of what a church ought to look like. In 1853, San Felipe got its first pitched roof, which probably saved the building from the fate of its predecessor. The gothic wooden towers and pediment that frame the entrance were added a few years later. (continued on next page)

Today the building houses a gift shop and museum.

San Felipe remains an active parish, many of whose members are descendants of Albuquerque’s founders. The parish will hold its annual fiestas on the weekend of June 7-9, providing a good opportunity to become reacquainted with this cultural landmark.

In 1868, Lamy replaced the diocesan clergy that had administered San Felipe during the Mexican period with Italian Jesuit fathers who shared his vision.

The Jesuits expanded the rectory just east of the church and built other structures that now enclose the parking area behind the church, including a schoolhouse on Romero Street. A number of changes were made to the interior of the church as well.

I

t has been estimated that about 5.4 million people in the United States live with Alzheimer’s disease. The vast majority of those people are 65 years of age and older. Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the country and the fifth leading cause of death in people 65 and older.

What is Alzheimer’s disease?

Alzheimer’s disease is a syndrome characterized by progressive loss of memory and critical thinking skills that is severe enough to negatively affect a person’s ability to perform daily activities, such as cooking, eating, bathing, dressing and toileting.

Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia.

Dementia can have several different causes, including stroke or vascular disease, thyroid disease, vitamin deficiencies, tumors, and Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s disease causes 60% to 80% of dementia cases.

What causes Alzheimer’s disease?

In Alzheimer’s disease, there is progressive loss of both brain cells and the interconnections between them. It is not clearly understood why that occurs. Abnormal proteins accumulate in the brain and cause plaques and tangles within and around brain cells. The loss of brain cells and their interconnections causes the brain to shrink over time and results in progressive loss of memory and cognitive ability.

What are the risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease?

Risk factors include family history, female gender, smoking, being overweight, poor diet with high fat foods, lack of exercise, social isolation, lower education level, and older age.

It is important to note, however, that Alzheimer’s is not a normal condition of aging. Diseases that adversely affect blood vessels or the heart, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and stroke, may also increase risk.

I had heard that exposure to aluminum is thought to be a risk for Alzheimer’s. Is that correct?

No. Current scientific information does not support a role for aluminum in the development of the disease. This theory was widespread in the 1970s and earlier, but subsequent research does not support it.

Is there any treatment for Alzheimer’s?

Currently there is no specific treatment for the disease that will stop or reverse the loss of brain cells and their interconnections. There are nonmedication and medication approaches to treat various symptoms of the disease. Medicines are available that may improve memory and cognitive ability. Other symptoms include mood

changes, behavior issues, and disruption in sleep patterns. Each person’s situation will be different, and treatment must be tailored to an individual’s specific circumstances. Ideally a person diagnosed with Alzheimer’s will have a physician and dedicated care team to help develop and implement the best treatment plan.

What should I do if I am diagnosed, or if my loved one is diagnosed, with Alzheimer’s?

It is important to work with your doctor and care team to understand the disease and learn what to expect over time. Many resources are available, including support groups, to help you and your family adjust to living with Alzheimer’s. The Alzheimer’s Association website, www.alz.org, is a good resource for additional information.

Happy Trails Walking For The Joy Of It

ow that warmer weather is here, it’s a great time to get outside and experience the heritage of our city and state. At the same time, you can reap some of the health benefits, both physical and emotional, of getting up and moving.

Personally, I detest exercising for the sake of exercising, especially if it involves a smelly gym and a lot of clanking machinery. But I love to walk. I’m not talking about walking on a treadmill or in endless circles around a track.

That’s too much like the e-word.

I need to go places where I can experience a variety of scenery.

Fortunately, in Albuquerque there are plenty of places where you can do that, including some that you might not have thought of as recreational venues.

Walking here is always an adventure. You see things you never noticed before: birds, wildlife, plants, trees, rocks. You become attuned to the weather and the changing of the seasons, the shapes of clouds and the colors of the sky.

You can go places you couldn’t by car and experience familiar places from a different perspective.

Pretty soon it becomes a habit.

You begin to get restless if you don’t get out for a good long walk every couple of days. And even if you didn’t start out with the goal of getting in shape and losing some weight, after a while you notice that you feel better, you sleep better, you have more energy, and your clothes fit a bit more loosely. Kind of nice.

And it didn’t even feel like work.

So, welcome to “Happy Trails,” an occasional feature devoted to the pleasant pastime of traveling afoot in and around Albuquerque. The idea is to enjoy yourself. I accept no responsibility for any health benefits you may experience.

In this inaugural column, we’ll visit a few of the outlying properties managed by the Open Space Division of Albuquerque’s Parks and Recreation Department, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year.

Open Space Hikes What is “Open Space”?

These are lands the city began acquiring more than 50 years ago to preserve for future generations

in their natural state, or at least as close to that as possible. At present, our Open Space properties comprise about 30,000 acres, a greater percentage of our total land area than any city of comparable size in the U.S. The properties are mostly undeveloped, some are well outside the city limits, and only low-impact activities like hiking, birding, horseback riding, mountain biking, etc. are allowed.

Every summer the Open Space Division sponsors a series of weekend events, including Sunday morning hikes to some of their lesser-known properties around the Albuquerque area. Of course, you can go there anytime, but it’s always more fun to go with a group, and these guided summer hikes, usually led by an OSD staff member, are a good introduction to places you might not know about. Don’t let the word “hike” scare you. Most are only moderately strenuous and proceed at a leisurely pace. All the Open Space hikes listed are free of charge.

Here are some highlights of this summer’s offerings: • Sunday, May 26: San Antonito Open Space. The series kicks

off on Memorial Day weekend with a hike through piñon/juniper country in the East Mountains.

Moderate difficulty.

• Sunday, July 7: Bosque Wild.

A three-mile stroll through the Rio Grande Bosque, starting from the Open Space Visitor Center.

• Sunday, July14: Milne Open Space. Another of OSD’s East Mountain properties.

Moderately strenuous.

• Sunday, Aug. 4: Juan Tomás Open Space. A moderately strenuous walk through mixed conifer woodland off South Highway 14.

All the above hikes require pre-registration. For hikes in outlying areas, a free van shuttle is available for transportation to the trailhead. To register online, go to play.cabq.gov.

May Is “Older Americans Month” Coach Mike, Outstanding Senior

T

he Administration for Community Living annually in May leads our nation’s observance of Older Americans Month. The designation was made, in part, to recognize that communities are stronger when they encourage and celebrate the contributions of older adults.

This year’s theme is “Connect, Create, Contribute,” and Prime Time is highlighting the 50+ years that Mike Middlestaedt, aka “Coach Mike,” has been doing just that. While many of the students and athletes he has trained have become Olympic contenders and medalists, the Albuquerque resident’s impact has resulted in a legacy that may surpass his notoriety gained as a coach.

“Everyone has their own ‘Mike story,’ and everyone feels like Mike is theirs,” said Mica Comstock, a Del Norte High School and West Point graduate, participant in the 1996 Olympic Marathon Trials and one of Coach Mike’s earliest athletes. “That’s how much attention he pours into everyone he works with and makes them feel special. He’s run with or coached the best athletes in the world.”

They include Peter Koech, Olympic silver medalist at the Sydney Olympics; Yobes Ondieki, world champion in

Tokyo; Falilat Ogunkoya, bronze and silver medalist in the Atlanta Olympic Games; Abdi Bile, world champion in the 1500 meter in Rome; and University of New Mexico distance great Ibrahim Hussein, winner of the Boston and New York City marathons.

A major in the Marine Corps, Middlestaedt coached the U.S. Marine Corps track and field team, earned the title of World Military Marathon Champion in Italy and won the Armed Forces Championship twice in the 10,000 meters. But he missed his chance at the Olympic games while serving in Vietnam.

Despite his global influence, Middlestaedt’s greatest impact has arguably been here at home, starting as a physical education teacher at Kit Carson Elementary in the South Valley.

“Mike was known as the crazy gringo that would run down the ditch banks in his marine boots alongside 10 little Mexican kids,” said Jerry Arguijo, then a third-grader. Arguijo went on to run at Adams State University where he was inducted in the Hall of Fame, eventually becoming a teacher himself.

Hundreds of runners Middlestaedt coached refer to themselves as “Mike’s Athletes,” but about 25 of those have remained particularly close. Several got together recently to honor Dr. Chuck Aragon, who once trained with

Middlestaedt and was inducted into the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame in December. Aragon thought so highly of Coach Mike that he credited Middlestaedt in his acceptance speech. Now a physician in Montana, Aragon was the first to break the four-minute mile at Notre Dame University, later winning a bronze medal in the 1983 Pan American Games, and completing the Oslo “Dream Mile” in just less than four hours.

“Mike had a way of making you believe in yourself,” Aragon said. “He did it by hard work, and not just bravado. He helped many of us reach our potential, and was known around the country for his ability to get the most out of his athletes.

“Mike has had a big part in the success of his athletes off the track as well, as he taught life lessons that we draw on today.”

Middlestaedt formed a running organization in 1982 called “Nosotros,” or “Us.” It included everyone – from novice to elite athletes – and is one example of how the beloved coach taught about much more than running via the sport.

“It was about life and being a help to those around us. All of the athletes on the Nosotros Track Club were taught by his example, to help each other,” said founding member Brian Kelchner, who missed qualifying for the Olympic track

Andy Zimmer, who was coached by Middlestaedt in high school and at UNM, described Middlestaedt as a visionary: “Whatever I was thinking, Mike was thinking in much larger terms. He instilled confidence, affirmed my dreams and raised the bar.”

Will Sisneros, who discovered his full potential when he trained with Nosotros as a high school senior, said: “The work ethic taught me by Mike and his encouragement and unselfishness was key in the successes I have seen in my work career, as a parent and as a coach.”

Today, the core members of Mike’s Athletes are rallying around Middlestaedt, diagnosed 10 years ago with Parkinson’s disease. Recently, they took him for a walk and enjoyed sharing memories.

Middlestaedt attributes his athletes’ successes to their dedication to the sport: “They were a group of hard-working kids who left their ego at the gate. …

These athletes knew they had to sacrifice yourself and your body.”

In spite of the sincere and numerous kudos from those he trained, Middlestaedt deflects personal praise, Comstock said: “When he was told by one of his athletes that he’s helped not just to create incredible athletes but also men and women of great character, his reply was, ‘I had the best material.’”

2019 National Senior Games UPDATE

Pickleball

P

ickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America.

If you’ve ever wondered about the craze, or what, if anything, it has to do with pickles, stay tuned.

The game that is sweeping the country is a combination of tennis, Ping-Pong and badminton.

Pickleball courts are half the size of a tennis court, with a shorter net, and to score points, players must move constantly. Games are played using a Wiffle ball and a paddle slightly larger than those used in Ping-Pong. It requires quick reflexes and is faster paced than tennis.

Pickleball is growing in popularity in part because it’s a social sport. Like tennis, it can be played in singles or doubles, and due to the smaller court, players are able to interact with each other during the game.

According to the USA Pickleball Association’s 2019 pickleball fact sheet, more than three million Americans play pickleball, and it doesn’t seem to be a passing fad, especially among older Americans.

SeniorHousingNews.com published an article in April touting the pros of having pickleball courts as an amenity among senior living facilities due to its popularity among the demographic. It claims a rising demand for pickleball over tennis.

The article said seniors are attracted to the sport because it is low impact, creating less stress on the knees and joints than

other activities. Also, playing the game regularly can improve fitness levels.

This summer, the National Senior Games will be hosted in Albuquerque from June 1425, and pickleball is among the competitive sports planned.

Tournaments, which are free to the public, are expected to be held at the Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center.

“Pickleball is easy to learn.

You can play doubles so that you complement each other and help each other out during the game,” said Joyce Paulsen, Albuquerque Pickleball Club president. She has played the sport for eight years, and this will be her fourth time competing in the NSG. “It doesn’t overtax you,” she said. “Beginners can play, including kids, and you can play seven days a week here in Albuquerque.”

Paulsen and her husband, Bob, play together often. “I’ve played tennis for 45 years,” he said. “You have to set up a game and court.

Playing takes about an hour and a half, and then you’re done. With pickleball, you can come out to the court any time. There are 50 people already there playing. The games are about 15 minutes long, then you rotate. It’s such a fun, social sport.”

There are a couple of theories as to the origin of the sport’s name, but the most popular one is that it started with a dog. It is said that Joel Pritchard developed the game in 1965 near Seattle and that the family dog, named Pickles, chased errant balls when it was played.

For control of most insects, you can mix ½ cup of tabasco sauce with one onion and a half dozen cloves of garlic in a blender with two cups of water. Blend the material and let it stand for 24 hours.

Make balls of bait and put them wherever you see roaches. You can also control roaches by putting down duct tape, sticky side up. They will be attracted to the glue and get stuck. If you have roaches outside, put out pie pans filled with beer. They will enter the pans and drown.

As for ants, a variety of products will work: These include cinnamon, baking soda, cedar oil, talcum powder, chalk, coffee grounds, borax, garlic, broken egg shells, bone meal, black or red pepper, peppermint, paprika, chili powder and mint leaves. Most ants can also be controlled using a bait made from two tablespoons each of peanut butter and jelly mixed with one tablespoon of boric acid or borax. Place the bait where you see the ants foraging.

If you have silverfish, you can trap them by putting some flour in a glass jar and wrapping it with duct tape so they can climb up the sides. They will get in the jar but will not be able to get out.

If you have flies, you can create a funnel trap using water bottles. Simply cut the tops off several plastic water bottles at about their middle - where the funnel of the bottle ends and the large shaft begins - and invert the tops into the lower portions forming a funnel.

Join them together using staples or tape. Put about two inches of apple cider vinegar in the bottles with a quarter teaspoon of sugar. Almost all

flies, no matter what their normal food preference, will enter the trap. Gallon size milk jugs cut as described and baited with apple cider vinegar and sugar will catch a lot of flies in a large building or yard.

If garden pests are an issue, there are natural recipes to control them as well.

For mites, try mixing four tablespoons of buttermilk with a cup of all-purpose flour and a gallon of water.

This mixture will suffocate them. Crush three ounces of garlic cloves and mix them with one ounce of mineral oil.

Let this mixture stand overnight, then strain. Mix one teaspoon of fish oil and one tablespoon of castile soap with a quart of water. Slowly combine the garlic mix with the fish oil mix. Then mix two tablespoons of this with a pint of water in a sprayer. This is effective on some insects and mites. It may be easier to mix one tablespoon of a mild dish soap plus one teaspoon of a vegetable cooking oil with one quart of water. This can be sprayed on all plants.

Remember to spray both the top and the underside of the leaves.

For weed control, mix one gallon of white vinegar, ¼ cup of liquid dish soap and one cup of Epson salts in a garden sprayer. Spray weeds generously, wait a couple of days, and they’ll be dead If you have any pest questions, contact me at askthebugman2013@ gmail.com or at 505-385-2820.

CASA (City of Albuquerque Senior Affairs) Kitchen Looking for volunteers to support a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen that prepares food for seniors in the community. Hours are anytime between 4:00a.m. – 12p.m, Monday through Friday.

Participate in preparation and distribution of food. Follow proper procedures in handling of food, portion control, sanitation, nutritional requirements and safety procedures. his year marks the 43rd anniversary of German disco group Silver Connection’s hit song “Get Up and Boogie,” which ought to be taken as a call to action for seniors.

Immobility is the enemy. Regular physical activity is beneficial to both men and women, but it

need not be strenuous to produce positive benefits.

Before starting any new physical activity, please consult your physician. After being cleared to participate, let’s look at some options.

Walking short distances, for short periods is a great place to start. Mall walking is popular and window shopping can curtail the monotony.

Walking can speed up metabolism, improve circulation, strengthen muscles and improve balance.

Gentle stretching and/or yoga can improve flexibility, strengthen muscles and increase your balance.

Water exercise is a fantastic option for those with arthritic conditions.

The buoyancy relieves the pounding forces on the joints.

The aerobic component coupled with the resistance that the water provides contributes to muscle strength.

Exercise is not limited to gym, track or pool activities. If possible, attend dance functions or participate in picnic activities, such as croquet or bocce ball. It’s never too late to start.

Studies show that older individuals exhibit greater physical and mental improvements than their younger counterparts.

If you are afraid of not having the ability to stick with a program, then get an accountability partner someone who can help motivate you when you don’t feel like moving.

The key to remaining active is to keep the activities varied. Plan

to do one type of exercise for one week and then rotate to another for a week. Repeat this as often as you feel comfortable. Get out and enjoy the National Senior Games being held in Albuquerque next month.

n overactive bladder affects men and women differently, but there are some similar approaches the genders may take to help combat it.

For men, prostate involvement tends to be a factor since an enlarged prostate may impede a complete voiding of the bladder. full bladder continues to signal nerves to contract muscles, fostering an agonizing urge to urinate.

For women, pelvic floor muscles are compromised from heavy lifting or bearing children. Many women have stress incontinence (releasing urine after a sneeze for example) and can’t jump on an exercise trampoline without protection in their undergarments due to pelvic floor weakness. The good news is, dietary restrictions, exercises and medications can reduce the number of trips one takes to the restroom.

A person with an overactive bladder may experience sudden urges to urinate, sometimes accompanied by the occasional difficulty to control or

They may also experience frequent urination (defined as more than eight times in 24 hours) and nocturia (waking more than two times per night to urinate). Make sure to visit a doctor and have the appropriate tests run to confirm the absence of infection, to determine the prostate is within normal ranges, and to verify that there isn’t any other medical reason affecting the urinary bladder.

Consider keeping food, water, and medication journal notes to determine potential irritants. One item on the list may not be the issue. Perhaps multiple triggers cause tipping points.

Take careful observations to avoid unnecessary restrictions. You may not have to cut out all coffee.

Caffeine isn’t a diuretic, since drinking caffeinated beverages does not cause a person to lose more fluid than they consume. Caffeine does trigger the urge to urinate. Alcohol, on the other hand, is a diuretic, and the tannins in red wine are unfortunate bladder irritants.

That hangover sports drink designed to hydrate you may not help either. It increases blood volume, which can also lead to excessive urination. Medical conditions and medications that cause thirst or dry mouth can lead to water intake and frequent urination.

After drinking fluids, the kidneys act as a filter, producing urine stored in the bladder. Urinary urges can occur when the nervous system is activated causing the bladder to contract. A cascade of responses then activates the pelvic floor muscles, encouraging the urethra to relax. As the bladder contracts and the pelvic floor releases, the urine begins to flow out. Understanding this process may help explain the uncontrollable sequences that occur at the level of the nervous system and why it is so difficult to stop a process in motion. In an overactive bladder, muscles contract involuntarily regardless of the amount of urine in the bladder.

Many conditions may lead to an overactive bladder, including neurological disorders, stroke, and diabetes, to name a few. No matter what the cause, training your bladder with timed voiding sessions, holding for extended periods can be helpful. Pelvic floor exercises called Kegels, involving contracting, holding, and releasing pelvic muscles (as if halting urinary flow midway), can train and tone muscles.

Try these exercises by contracting pelvic floor muscles for a few seconds before releasing. Attempt to build up to 10-second holding periods. Constipation can trigger bladder pressure related to

urgency as well. Lastly, there may be a reason to consider other food items (such as gluten) as irritants that are not mentioned below.

Many individuals find help from both prescription and over-the-counter medications that can relieve bladder contractions. Do not let bladder control issues take over your life. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all cure for overactive bladder, but there are many ways to approach the discomfort with diet, lifestyle and medication. Take a look at the elimination list below for ideas of where to start with your experimentation.
