4 Tips To Help Overcome New Challenges

I

t’s not easy getting old, as the saying goes, and it can be even harder to watch your parents age. Helping parents transition into the later years of their lives can be a delicate matter, but there are ways to help them ease into an elderly stage and cope better with challenges.

Carol Lavin Bernick, former executive chairman of Alberto Culver, navigated this type of life transition with her parents. In her book, “Gather As You Go: Lessons Learned Along the Way,” Bernick offers tips to give and get joy while preserving your parents’ dignity in addition to wisdoms on business and leadership, philanthropy, dealing with tough times and being a working mom.

For example, consider these tips and ways to aid aging parents: Provide Entertainment Music can be a helpful gift – try loading a music player with a playlist of your parents’ favorite songs. Old movies can also spark conversation.

Serving foods that are easier to cut can make eating a simpler process.

Keep an eye on weight and nutrition and try to find someone who will make a house call for haircuts.

Relive Memories Encourage older relatives to write (or dictate) their thoughts on financial tips, military service, business success, valued life lessons and, of course, the stories of how they met their spouses.

Make a family tree together and try creating a photobook with old and new pictures. Share news about family members’ relationships and accomplishments, which might bring back personal memories.

Consider the Little Things Surprise your parents with a few new pieces of clothing for a thoughtful gift. Laminate a list of their medications and their doctors to keep with you in case of emergency and provide a copy to your parents and any other caregivers. Create a contact

Host a luncheon for some of their best friends and make their favorite treats.

They may be housebound, but there are still ways for them to interact.

he original knight in shining armor abides in Richard Wagner’s classic opera.

After he rescues the damsel from her distress, he marries her but makes Elsa promise never to ask who he is or where he comes from.

Meanwhile, an ambitious couple works against Lohengrin and his bride to regain power and separate Elsa from her love and protector.

Opera Southwest’s reimagination of the lost orchestration from the 1850 Weimar premier conducted by Franz Liszt will introduce New Mexico audiences to Wagner’s surprisingly intimate masterpiece for an epic close to the opera season. Albuquerque Gearing Up To Host National Senior Games

A

lbuquerque is gearing up to host the National Senior Games, an Olympic-style two- week competition for ages 50 and older, this summer. With thousands of participants from across the United States expected to attend the festivities June 14-25, organizers anticipate the event will not only generate upwards of $30 million in tourism revenue for the city but also bring with it countless opportunities for locals to get involved.

A flame arrival ceremony complete with torch runner will light a cauldron on Civic Plaza to kick off the games at 7 p.m. June 15. A Celebration of Athletes is set to occur at the Pit at the University of New Mexico on June 19.

There will also be a multitude of volunteer opportunities throughout.

“We would love for the public to pack these events,” said Anthony Romero, who is serving as Operations Director of the Games via his position with the City’s

Department of Senior Affairs. “I think that Albuquerque is really going to shine in welcoming the athletes. … Spectators are really what are going to make this experience happen, and all of the events are free.”

The National Senior Games, formerly the Senior Olympics, is the largest, multi-event competition for seniors in the world. In 2017, the last time the national games were played, more than 10,000 seniors competed. A long-standing point of pride for the NSG is its inclusivity. Senior Games events have always been open to both men and women. Even at its inception, board members were almost equally split between genders, said NSG Association Director and CEO Marc Riker.

Among the Games’ 20 sporting events are softball, track and field, basketball, volleyball and bowling.

Competitions will take place in venues across the metropolitan area - a triathlon at Cochiti Lake; golfing at University of New Mexico courses and at Sandia and

Santa Ana resorts; swimming at the West Mesa Aquatic Center; and archery at Balloon Fiesta Park.

“We are so excited to be in Albuquerque this year. From our board, our staff, our athletes, folks can’t wait to get here,” Riker said, adding that registration numbers are tracking higher than they were in 2017.

Of course, the Games have grown immensely since their inception in St. Louis, Mo., in 1987. At that time, 2,000 athletes participated. Of those, eight have competed in all of the Senior Games since.

“We call them the Great Eight,” Riker said. “Six or seven of them are planning on coming this year. … Everyone has a story.”

Take 102-year-old Julia Hawkins of Louisiana. She has won multiple gold medals in various NSG events over the years, including cycling and the 500-yard dash.

“She may be our oldest athlete,” said Riker, who had the opportunity to interview Hawkins in 2017, before a live audience.

“We were flying her in from Baton Rouge to Orlando for the interview and were so worried something might happen to her because she might be so fragile. I was concerned about how dark it was, standing with her backstage, wondering if the stairs were too (continued on next page)

participate in the festivities, there will be many other cultural and entertainment events going on around the city.

“We’re going to try to do a movie night on the Plaza, we’re going to do a dance on the Plaza one night, just lots of things everyone can enjoy,” Romero said.

Salsa Under the Stars at the Albuquerque Museum, the Old Town Concert Series, and Shakespeare on the Plaza are just a few events coinciding with the games.

In fact, Riker said, “Fifty percent of the folks who compete come because it’s a social event; it’s a fellowship. You will even have athletes coming who didn’t qualify to compete but just love the atmosphere and friendships of the games. Maybe they’ll come to volunteer and be spectators. They plan their vacations to come just be a part of it.”

high for her, or if the railings were OK. It was pitch black and I could barely see anything. Then they call us on stage, and off she goes! She didn’t need any assistance from me. She walked on stage waving to the audience.”

Hawkins competed in four of the Senior Games until she was 80 and then retired for a while. “I took a little break because there was no one my age to compete with me. Then my children signed me up for the 2017 games without me knowing about it. I thought it would be neat to run the 100-yard dash at 100 years old!”

While no one younger than age 50 may compete in the games, no maximum age limit exists. “[Age] can go as high as it can go. At the last games there were three competitors over the age of 100,” Riker said.

Even those who are beginners and have never competed as an athlete have a place at the Senior Games. Power walking, for example, is a non-qualifying sport, and anyone can register for it.

Solomon Bibo: Acoma’s Jewish Governor

ost of the Jewish pioneers who settled in New Mexico in the middle and late 19th century gravitated toward the growing cities of Santa Fe, Albuquerque and Las Vegas, where the most promising commercial opportunities were to be found.

Others were more adventurous,

establishing themselves in rural areas, small towns, and the stilluntamed country of western New Mexico.

Among these were the Bibo brothers, who had emigrated from the Prussian town of Bräkel, Westphalia, where their father was a cantor. First to arrive were the eldest siblings, Nathan, Joseph

and Simon. They worked for a time for another German-Jewish family, the Spiegelbergs of Santa Fe, before striking out on their own. By the time their 16-yearold brother Solomon joined them in 1869, Nathan and Simon had secured a contract with the Army to provide supplies to Fort Wingate, Fort Defiance and other military outposts in western New Mexico and eastern Arizona. They also traded with the Navajo and Zuni tribes, and earned a reputation for fair dealing with the Indians.

Nathan later opened a mercantile store in Bernalillo, while Simon and Solomon did the same in Cebolleta (sometimes spelled ‘Seboyeta’), a Spanish land-grant community a few miles north of Laguna Pueblo.

Although he remained an observant Jew throughout his life, Solomon Bibo seems in every other way to have become assimilated into the local culture. Linguistically gifted, he quickly mastered English, Spanish, and the Keresan

dialects spoken at Laguna and Acoma, and learned a fair amount of the Navajo and Zuni languages as well.

He developed an especially close relationship with the Pueblo of Acoma and became a trusted friend and advisor to the tribe. In 1882, he was granted a government license to operate a trading post at the pueblo, and in 1885, he married Juana Valle, daughter of a prominent Acoma family. In fact, they were married twice: first in a traditional ceremony at the pueblo, then later by a Justice of the Peace to ensure that their union was legitimate in the eyes of American law. That the marriage had the blessing of tribal elders is an indication of the high regard they must have had for Bibo, since marriage to non-Indians was generally unacceptable to the proudly independent Acomas.

Even more unusual was Bibo’s election to serve as the pueblo’s

governor in 1888—an honor bestowed on very few white men by any pueblo. As governor, he supported progressive policies, such as establishing a day school and requiring children to attend it, which brought him into conflict with the more conservative faction of the community.

And that was only the beginning of his troubles. As a sideline, Bibo had taken up cattle ranching, and had acquired a grazing lease on Acoma land under circumstances that appeared questionable. The U.S. Indian Agent for the Pueblos accused him of defrauding the Indians (a charge that was later dismissed) and revoked his trading license. He became embroiled in a three-way land dispute involving the Pueblos of Laguna and Acoma, and the Cebolleta Land Grant Association. As the controversy became more heated, some ugly anti-Semitic insults were hurled.

A priest supporting the land grant heirs distributed a broadside printed in Spanish denouncing Bibo as “un rico Israelito,” who was out to steal their land.

In truth, although Bibo was earning a decent living, he was hardly the conniving “rich Jew” described in these accusations. The available evidence suggests that in all his dealings with the pueblos he had acted in good faith.

Nevertheless, feeling themselves beset by enemies on all sides, he and Juana left the mesa-top pueblo and moved off the reservation, eventually relocating to San Francisco in 1898. There they remained for the rest of their lives, operating a specialty grocery store and dabbling in real estate. Juana converted to Judaism, and they raised their children in that faith.

Solomon died in 1934, Juana a few years later. They are interred together at the Jewish cemetery at Colma, just south of the city.

Some of their children returned to New Mexico, and at least one was initiated as a member of the Acoma tribe. Their descendants still live in the area. The little village of Bibo, near Cebolleta, preserves the family name.

A

s National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, March is a good time to increase awareness of the disease and to remind yourself to get screened for colorectal cancer. In the United States, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in men and women and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. When discovered early, however, the disease can often be cured.

What is colorectal cancer?

Colorectal cancer is a malignant growth that starts in either the colon or the rectum, which together form the large intestine. The growth often begins as a polyp that develops in the inner lining of the colon or rectum and grows toward the center. Most polyps are not cancer.

Only certain types of polyps, called adenomas, can become cancer.

What are some risk factors for developing colorectal cancer?

There are many risk factors for colorectal cancer. Older adults, African-Americans, and people with a personal history of colon cancer or polyps are at an increased risk for developing the disease. Those with a family history of colon cancer and people with certain inflammatory diseases of the large intestine are also at greater risk.

What are the symptoms of colorectal cancer?

Possible symptoms of colon cancer may include rectal bleeding or blood in your stool, weakness or fatigue, unexplained weight loss, and a persistent change in your bowel habits, such as diarrhea or constipation.

How is colorectal cancer diagnosed?

Colorectal cancer can be diagnosed with colonoscopy, a procedure where the doctor looks throughout the entire colon and rectum with a thin, lighted tube that has a small camera on the end.

What can be done to screen for it?

It is recommended that people age 50 and over receive regular screening using high-sensitivity fecal occult blood testing, sigmoidoscopy, or colonoscopy.

People with a family history of colon cancer or those with conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease or familial polyposis may need to be screened earlier.

Removing a polyp early, when it is small, may keep it from becoming cancer.

What can I do to decrease my risk for colorectal cancer?

There are steps you can take to decrease your risk. It is important to eat plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Try to decrease the amount of red and processed meats that you eat. Getting regular exercise may help to reduce your

risk, as can losing weight if you are overweight. As noted, smoking increases your risk for colon cancer as well as lung and other cancers, so if you smoke, stop. Limit your intake of alcohol. The American Cancer Society recommends no more than two drinks a day for men and one for women.

Colon cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer when it is found and treated early. Getting appropriate and timely screening is the best way to protect yourself from this deadly disease. Check with your doctor on when and how often you should be screened. Here’s to your health!

Local Chef Simmers And Chops Her Way To Success

A

lbuquerque chef Marie Yniguez has slow roasted, simmered and chopped her way to success. Known locally as Chef Marie and owner of

Slow Roasted Bocadillos, a restaurant inside the Wells Fargo building downtown, she has achieved national name recognition in recent years thanks to appearances on Food Network shows.

Just this January, she participated alongside daughter Ryan Duran on “Guy’s Grocery Games.” Duran grew up in the kitchen of the family business and studies culinary arts at Central New Mexico Community College, so the duo teamed up for the recent episode, which was billed as a family tournament.

Though they didn’t ultimately win, Yniguez says the support and encouragement they received was highly reaffirming: “Since ‘Chopped,’ it has been unreal.

I feel so blessed by my crew and community.”

Predominantly self-taught, Yniguez competed solo on the Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” in 2017, bringing home the winning prize of $10,000.

However, it hasn’t always been an easy journey. Yniguez had a stroke when she was 30, was fired from a kitchen where she once worked - the same one she now owns - and suffered a tremendous loss with the suicide of her brother years ago.

“In this business, there will always be heartache, I think.

I was taught never to give up or give in. It’s just not an option. If you start something, finish it.

That’s all I know,” Yniguez said.

“But guaranteed, there will always be better times than there are bad ones. If you have your crew and family behind you, you will always be OK, no matter the heartache.”

Among her greatest joys of late is her grandson, Justin, who will be 3 years old next month.

Yniguez said her grandson’s birth has helped keep her grounded in a business that makes demands 24 hours per day, seven days a week. “When he was born, I really took a minute to see what’s important in my life, and I rearranged my goals to spend more time with family.”

The chef says she is thankful to have plenty of friends and support in Albuquerque, and she’s proud to share her love of food and New Mexico with the rest of the culinary world. “I always say the Rio Grande runs through my veins,” she laughs.

“I just want everyone to know how amazing New Mexico is, that we are not just what the statistics say.”

Her advice for those wanting to follow in her footsteps? “Why wonder about the would’ve, could’ve, should’ve’s when it’s too late? If you don’t try, you’ll never know. At least at the end of everything, you had the guts to put yourself out there.”

Your mouth can kill you.

For as long as you can remember, your parents and your dentist have been imploring you to brush, floss and see your dentist regularly.

Now, science and medicine has confirmed that poor oral hygiene and the presence of oral diseases can have a detrimental effect on your overall health.

Periodontal Disease Next to our teeth there exists a small pocket made up by the connection of the gum tissue to the tooth root. In normal periodontal health, this pocket is between 1 and 3mm deep. In the absence of proper oral hygiene or dental disease, this pocket can deepen, resulting in increased bacteria in the area.

When bacteria is present and does not get properly removed, it produces toxins that can cause

bone loss. This bone loss will result in the periodontal pocket becoming deeper. As this pocket deepens beyond 4-5mm, it becomes more difficult to keep clean and more bacteria will be present.

Another thing that happens is that the bacteria changes.

Normally, the bacteria in our mouths is made up aerobic bacteria, which needs oxygen to survive, but, in periodontal disease, as the pocket deepens, the bacteria can become anaerobic, which is more destructive and does not need oxygen. As you can see, this becomes a never-ending cycle of bacteria and the inability to get rid of them. The only way this vicious cycle is stopped is through the direct actions of your dentist and hygienist.

Heart Disease Science has shown that there is a direct correlation between our periodontal health and our overall health. One of the first connections made was the link between periodontal disease and

heart disease. An early Harvard study showed that people with periodontal disease had two to three times higher risk of having a heart attack, stroke or other serious cardiac event.

“Periodontal disease increases the body’s burden of inflammation,” according to Dr. Hatice Hasturk of the Harvardassociated Forsyth Institute. This long-term, chronic inflammation is a key contributor to many health issues, especially atherosclerosis.

Diabetes Another common disease in our society and one that becomes more prevalent as we age is diabetes.

There is emerging evidence that diabetes has a two-way relationship with periodontal disease. Diabetes increases the risk of periodontitis, and this periodontal inflammation negatively affects glycemic control (blood sugar values). The incidence of end-stage renal disease is increased two- and three-fold in diabetic patients who have periodontal disease.

Alzheimer’s Disease Another serious medical condition that has recently been connected to periodontal disease is Alzheimer’s disease. The bacteria associated with periodontal disease have now been linked to the onset and progression of it. As discussed earlier in this article, periodontal disease is a chronic, low-grade infection that contributes to a chronic inflammatory response in the body. These inflammatory cytokines have a direct link both with the onset and the continued progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

In January 2019, the University of Louisville published a report that showed that the main bacteria associated with periodontal disease (porphyromonas gingivalis) appears to drive Alzheimer’s.

These are but a few of the reasons your oral health is so very important to your overall health.

Do yourself a favor, and see your dentist regularly. Brush and floss every day, as if your life depended on it. It might.

y first experience with winter’s intermittent thaw and freeze occurred when I was a student on the East Coast.

Ignoring the several feet of snow and ice piled along the side of the road, I decided to walk across the sidewalk without care. I soon found myself on my back, gazing skyward, the wind completely knocked out of me.

A passerby acknowledged my predicament and quipped, “Slippery out, eh?”

Although New Mexican winters are neither very long nor very cold, ice occurs occasionally. The weather service warns us of the risk of frost/freeze up until March 30, but it doesn’t usually warn of the associated dangers of slips and falls.

Marching Into March Safely One-quarter of Americans over the age of 65 fall annually.

Senior falls are the leading cause of fatal injury in that age group and result in more than 800,000 hospitalizations each year. Falls and the associated hospitalizations are responsible for 27,000 deaths per year.

How can you protect yourself?

Know the current temperature and recent freezing conditions.

Lingering ice patches may exist in shaded areas and present hazards.

Move slowly and deliberately along your path. Flat- soled rubber shoes are the safest in slippery conditions. Some individuals opt to wear outer shoes with extra traction. Please remember to remove these upon entering a building or home. Flooring or carpets may become wet and slippery.

Outside, if a sidewalk is available, look ahead for possible areas of frozen precipitation. Avoid icy spots by walking to the edge of the sidewalk, where small gravel or grass may provide traction.

Never walk with your hands in your pockets. If a stumble occurs,

Don’t text or read while walking, especially in wintry conditions.

Beware the areas around parked cars, as they may pose a danger as well. Entering and exiting a vehicle can be quite dangerous since we depend on a sound surface to either take off from or land on. Take care to hold on to the car frame as you climb aboard or leave your vehicle.

Now for the good news: Falls, for the most part, are preventable.

Not only should you take precaution venturing outdoors, but also be aware of the indoor obstacle course within your home. Throw rugs, excessive clutter, extension cords and even medications pose a significant risk to your stability.

Ask your health care provider for a fall risk assessment.

The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) Advisory Council Needs members to join its efforts in promoting awareness and educating the community about FGP and senior issues.

Recently I went to a house where a family had an infestation of them. Two pest control companies had given the residents quotes for treatment over the the phone, without knowing what kind of ants they were. Even when the exterminator saw them, the person couldn’t identify them.

Ultimately, the residents called me for guidance.

Similarly, when I visited the home, I didn’t recognize the species of ants either. I knew they were big-headed ants, but I would need to examine them more closely using a microscope to determine more. There are 33 species of big-headed ants in New Mexico, and you have to know specifically which species you are dealing with if you want to control them.

When I viewed them under a microscope, it became clear from the shape and size of the antennae, that they are of a species that has very large colonies and that usually burrow under large boulders when winter approaches. They are not common house pests, but in this case they went under the person’s house. When they needed water, they came into the house via the expansion joints and kept getting

There are about 225 species of ants in New Mexico - more than in all of Europe. Of course, the vast majority of them never enter homes, and you will never see them. However, there are a few species that don’t normally enter homes but will occasionally, and they need to be properly identified before a treatment is performed.

Some of these ants are so obscure they don’t have common names.

I recommended the people control the ants themselves by spraying along the baseboards with a cedar oil product. There are several brands. One is Wondercide.

This will only last a week or so, but it is absolutely safe for their dogs. I also suggested they fill their sinks with a few inches of water and a little soap. If the ants wanted water, they would go into the sink and drown. The residents caught hundreds of ants this way.

I also recommended that they put some diatomaceous earth behind or beneath the baseboards wherever it was possible. Using these varieties of methods, the residents were able

While looking south on old State Route 44, now called State Route 550. I was simply sightseeing, taking in the scenery, when I spotted this majestic and magnificent mesa.

I couldn’t forget what I saw. I had to paint it.

I told them that baits would not work very well with these ants because they feed on seeds. They are dimorphic, meaning they have minor workers and major workers.

The minor workers gather seeds, and the major workers, with their large jaws, break the seeds open.

They won’t take a bait unless it is in a seed-like form. The only bait I am aware of that may work with these ants is Niban Bait in fine grade, made from boric acid. This bait is only available online.

eople with persistent arthritic pain often pay close attention to diet in an attempt to avoid a potential flare-up. For some, this has meant eliminating nightshade vegetables.

The most commonly known nightshades include white potatoes, eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, paprika, goji berries and tomatillos.

The fear of nightshades began when people died after consuming certain forms, such as belladonna (also named “deadly nightshade”) and jimson weed. Both contain high concentrations of a natural toxin called solanine. The key poison in Shakespeare’s Macbeth was belladonna, an herb used during the playwright’s time by women to dilate their pupils so they might appear more attractive.

Don’t Eat Green Potatoes: A Tale Of Nightshades While the dose sensitivity of belladonna has been known for hundreds of years, there is little research connecting commonly eaten nightshades with inflammatory responses.

In fact, much of the food we consume contains naturally occurring pesticides. These toxic chemicals are created by plants to prevent themselves from being eaten. They include alkaloids and glycoalkaloids, such as solanine, nicotine and capsaicin, which are found in nightshades at various concentrations.

Humans do not absorb solanine well, so it takes large, concentrated doses to cause direct harm.

Potatoes and eggplant (not the Chinese eggplant) are the most common foods associated with potentially slightly high solanine content. Sunlight encourages solanine, which is why keeping potatoes in the dark is best. If potatoes sprout, throw them out. A sprouting green potato will have a higher solanine content than a fresh one. Still, it would take four to six

pounds of raw sprouting potatoes to consume a dangerous amount of solanine.

Most of the anecdotal complaints targeting nightshades view solanine as the principal antagonist.

However, tomatoes are categorized as nightshades and do not contain solanine. They contain tomatine, another non-toxic alkaloid. Other foods such as blueberry, apple, cherries, beets, okra, artichokes and huckleberry contain solanine as well. Someone that does well with these foods but not with nightshades might consider other chemical aspects of nightshades as problematic.

Nicotine is an alkaloid found in eggplant in drastically minimal amounts. Nicotine is an insecticide a plant uses to prevent being eaten.

Similar to solanine, concentrated doses of nicotine (not through a food source) can result in serious side effects and even death. Eating eggplant does not pose a nicotinerelated problem.

Capsaicin creates the heat in spicy foods, like chili pepper,

paprika, cayenne and red pepper flakes. It has been positively regarded to help boost metabolism, fight low-grade infections, heal a leaky gut and help with immunity.

Capsaicin is not considered to be a harmful food chemical in general populations.

In fact, there isn’t a significant amount of evidence to prove that nightshades pose a threat to healthy individuals. The unique experiences of some who report a connection between inflammation and nightshades could be due to compromised immunity or digestive illnesses that result in a sensitivity to alkaloids and lectins, another protein within nightshades.

When it comes to the final word on whether or not to eat nightshades, listen to your body.

If you think you are reactive, keep a food journal and steer clear of green potatoes. May the luck of the Irish potato be with you!
