COV E R S TOR Y Understanding Perks Of Caffeine vs. Coffee Key To Reaping Health Benefits

T

here’s caffeine, and then there’s coffee. The two are not one and the same. Though multiple studies have emerged within the last year touting a laundry list of health benefits associated with coffee, there are reasons that no studies show the same benefits to be associated with, say, caffeineladen energy drinks. In recognition of March as Caffeine Awareness Month, we’re grinding through the highs and lows to help you make more informed choices when it comes to caffeine intake.

Caffeine on its own is a drug, a naturally-occurring stimulant. It’s been shown to make people more alert, improve mental function and short-term memory, and increase reaction times, but in itself has little, if any, medical value, according to

local experts.

“Any health benefits are not from the caffeine itself but only when it’s consumed with something else that has other healthful properties,” said Dr. Sunil Pai, owner of Sanjevani Integrative Medicine, Health and Lifestyle Center in Albuquerque.

“When you have tea or coffee, the polyphenols, antioxidants, amino acids, and other nutrients are beneficial for health.”

“The problem is that people think of coffee and caffeine interchangeably,” said Shelley A. Rael, a registered dietitian and nutritionist in private practice in Albuquerque.

About 62 percent of Americans drink coffee daily, and the average drinker consumes three cups a day, according to the National Coffee Association. People aged 70 and over drank about 2.2 cups of coffee

per capita in 2020, making it the age group that drank the most coffee on average that year, according to the most recent statistics from market and consumer data company Statista.

In general, there should be no downsides for most people to drinking up to the recommended maximum of three 8-ounce cups of joe day, regardless of age. Indeed, there are likely many upsides. According to a decade-long study of almost 500,000 people, regular coffee drinkers of half a cup to three cups were at a statistically significant reduced risk for stroke, heart disease, and death from any cause compared with non-drinkers.

(The UK Biobank study was presented at the European Society of Cardiology’s annual meeting last year.) Results released last fall from an American Heart Association study also found decreased heart failure risk associated with drinking coffee, and a study of healthy individuals aged 50-74 published in November in PLOS Medicine showed drinking coffee or tea may be associated with a lower risk of stroke and dementia. Myriad other studies have found that moderate amounts can protect adults from Type II diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, liver disease, prostate cancer, Alzheimer’s and even back pain.

“The challenge for many Americans is the definition of a cup.

We tend to supersize,” Pai said.

“People are getting a grande or venti and can get 300 milligrams in the container that’s in their hand. So, they’re almost at their daily limit already with one ‘cup’ of coffee.”

In addition to Americans’ struggle with quantity, there’s also the issue of quality. Not all coffee drinks are equal. Black coffee is the best for you. At the other end of the spectrum are frozen coffee drinks.

They may well contain the healthful properties of coffee, Rael said, but

those small amounts of antioxidants are far overshadowed by the sugar and fat.

“The tendency in America,” Pai said, “is we want the stimulation only, and we tend to sacrifice the health benefits.”

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends an intake of no more than 400 mg of caffeine a day from any combination of sources.

It’s easier to overdose than people might think, Rael said, because people aren’t often aware of just how much caffeine is in their daily diet. Caffeine exists in a number of common drinks and foods besides coffee. These include soft drinks, energy bars, ice cream that contains chocolate or coffee, cereal that contains chocolate, energy drinks (not to be confused with electrolyteladen sports drinks), and some chewing gum. Caffeine is even present in some over-the-counter pain killers and to some degree in decaffeinated coffee and tea. (Only caffeine free is caffeine free.)

Once people pass 400 mg of caffeine in a day, side effects such as insomnia, headaches, anxiety, heart palpitations, increased blood pressure, loose bowel, and increased heart rate, are more likely.

“It can add up alarmingly fast,” Rael said. “Some energy drinks and (continued on next page)

shots may even contain other stimulants in addition to caffeine, creating a cumulative effect, which on top of coffee consumption can be toxic. It’s not uncommon to hear about caffeine poisoning deaths.”

While the extreme cases tend to occur in younger people who are more likely to consume caffeine in sources other than and in addition to coffee, seniors are not without risk.

Caffeine is a diuretic, which can cause increased urination. “This can lead to some degree of dehydration, which may lead to problems in older people because older people tend not to hydrate as much,” Pai said.

Older men experiencing enlarged prostate or incontinence issues may also want to be more careful about their caffeine consumption as too much can irritate the bladder.

Many people as they age have difficulty sleeping, so they may want to limit caffeine in any form to

the early part of the day, possibly no later than lunchtime.

Also important, as Albuquerque enters spring allergy season, people of all ages should be aware that decongestants and nasal sprays contain ingredients that increase heart rate. “If you drink coffee on top of that, you could see problems like heart palpitations,” Pai said.

For anyone thinking they’ll just substitute regular coffee and tea with their decaffeinated counterparts, you might want to think again.

Decaffeination is a chemical process that typically removes not only a lot of the caffeine but also some of the good-for-you polyphenols and antioxidants.

“I think it’s criminal to have decaf coffee,” Rael said. “So, I really try to help people build caffeine safely into their lifestyle if they desire it.

Besides, most people, if I told them they needed to stop having coffee, it would need to be a life-or-death situation (for them to listen).”

Here are the amounts of caffeine expected per 8-ounce serving of some popular beverages, according to Healthline: • Espresso: 240–720 mg • Coffee: 102–200 mg • Yerba mate: 65–130 mg • Energy drinks: 50–160 mg • Brewed tea: 40–120 mg • Soft drinks: 20–40 mg • Decaffeinated coffee: 3–12 mg • Cocoa beverage: 2–7 mg • Chocolate milk: 2–7 mg

he American Cancer Society estimates there will be 890 new cases of colon and rectal cancer in New Mexico in 2022 and 330 New Mexicans will die of colorectal cancer this year.

site of new cancers in both men and women. Colorectal cancer leads to more deaths than any other cancer except lung and prostate cancer in men, and lung and breast cancer in women. For reasons that are not clear, the incidence of colon and rectal cancer is increasing in younger individuals while decreasing slightly in adults 50 years of age and older. Similarly, while the colorectal cancer death

rate has dropped overall, we are seeing a disturbing rise in mortality in adults younger than age 55.

What can I do to better protect myself from colon cancer?

Make sure you are getting your screening. One of the explanations for the decreased mortality from colorectal cancer in people over 50 is that increased screening has resulted in early detection when cancers are much easier to treat and treatment is more likely to be successful. Screening tests are important because symptoms of colorectal cancer (rectal bleeding, pain, blood in the stool, changes in bowel habits and weight loss) do not usually appear until the cancer is advanced. Not only can screening detect colon cancer in early stages, but if a polyp is found during a colonoscopy, it can be removed at the same time. Polyps are often precancerous lesions, so removing these small growths at the polyp stage prevents them from turning into cancer. If polyps are found, you will need to get more frequent colonoscopies to detect new polyps that might develop.

What are the screening recommendations for colon cancer?

Screening guidelines have changed recently. The American Cancer Society and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force now recommend that people without risk factors start colorectal cancer screening at age 45 and have regular screening until age 75. After age 75, screening for colorectal cancer is dependent on the overall health of the individual. It is particularly important for African American individuals to begin screening at

age 45 because they are more likely than others to get colorectal cancer at a younger age. There are different methods for screening for colorectal cancer, so it is important to speak with your clinician about the most appropriate screening test for you.

What are the risk factors for colorectal cancer?

There are some risk factors that you have no control over. For instance, cancer risk increases with age. Also, if you have a family history of colorectal cancer or you have had colorectal cancer in the past, your risk is increased. As stated above, a history of certain types of polyps increases your risk. Individuals with chronic inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease) or type 2 diabetes are also at increased risk. Additionally, some inherited genetic abnormalities lead to higher incidences of colorectal cancer. If you have any of these risk factors, you should make sure your doctor knows this as you may need to be screened more frequently than the general population.

There are also risk factors you can control, and the presence of these factors leads to 55 percent of the cases of colorectal cancer in the U.S. If you are overweight and physically inactive, your risk of colorectal cancer is higher. Diets high in processed or red meat and low in fruits, vegetables and fiber increase your risk, as does heavy alcohol consumption. These are all lifestyle issues that you can modify to lower your risk of colorectal cancer.

How is colon cancer treated?

Over the past decades, treatment for colorectal cancer has improved,

which is another reason for the decrease in the death rate from colorectal cancer. Surgery is used to treat almost all forms of colorectal cancer, though in some cases it might not be the first line of treatment. In many cases, surgery can be performed through very small incisions, sometimes with robotic assistance. Hospital stays after these operations are very short, and pain is much less than that of traditional open surgery.

Chemotherapy is used to treat some types of colorectal cancer, and it may be administered before surgery. In some cases, radiation therapy is used. Newer therapies include immunotherapy and targeted therapy.

When colorectal cancer is detected early, survival is extremely high. This is another reason why physicians recommend a disciplined screening process. Like most cancers, the more advanced the tumor at diagnoses, the poorer the survival. But when colorectal cancers are localized to the intestine, the five-year survival rate is 90 percent or better.

So, in the spirit of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, review your records to make sure you are up to date on your screening. Consult your clinician if you have any questions. And follow up on those new year’s resolutions to eat better, exercise more, and decrease your alcohol consumption. Not only will you feel better, but you will lower your risk of colorectal cancer.

ith pandemic-related closures and shutdowns keeping people at home more than usual, perhaps you’ve had a chance to pick up a new hobby or get into some kind of crafting. Or maybe you are looking for a new project and just need something to spark your imagination. Either way, there are a vast number of options to explore no matter if you have a few hours to spare on weekends or are looking to set up a small sidebusiness. You can get into everything from macrame and punch-needle (remember those old fads?) to lasercut woodcrafts. Your only limit is your imagination – and possibly your budget.

Here are a few ideas for crafts that you can do without breaking the bank and some of the lesserknown places you might consider for purchasing crafting supplies.

First are thrift stores such as the local Goodwill and Thrift Town.

You probably know that thrifting can be great for finding a vintage side table or a gently-used sweater, but these locales are also prime destinations for crafters. That’s especially true for people who enjoy giving creative new life to old objects by repurposing them. Turn found silverware into wind chimes; use books for decoupage and collage work; take record albums, apply heat, and mold them to create decorative bowls. It’s easy – and rather satisfying – to turn vinyl into cute coffee table centerpieces in no time. Everything from vases and baskets, to dishes, and even some textiles can assume a new life with a touch of creativity.

Next up are the retail chains.

While national big box crafting outlets can be great for finding exactly what you need, you are often left paying a higher price for the convenience. With a little more effort and some regular visits, it’s possible to find excellent deals just off the beaten path. First mention goes to department stores Ross and T.J. Maxx, which you may identify more with clothes than with raw materials for hobbying. Not only have I been getting discounted threads and shoes at each for years, but they also have some household goods and often a small section of discounted craft supplies. Some of the items I have found on the cheap include pastels, paints, sketchbooks, small canvases, and even some adult

coloring books that allow you to combine art and meditation.

Even dollar stores can be a source for canvasses, which are at the center of one of the latest crafting fads: making a reverse canvas.

This involves removing the canvas from its inner frame, staining the frame and reattaching the canvas to the backside. It’s an easy project that results in an exposed-frame canvas that’s perfect for simple artworks that are ready to be hung in your home.

Finally, a special shoutout goes to Greater Albuquerque Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore off of Menaul.

If you are craft- or DIY-minded, this nonprofit home improvement store is paradise. Think thrift store but full of raw materials and building supplies.

Looking for a chair to reupholster?

They’ve got you covered. Thinking of making your own bench or hall tree for your home entryway?

They’ve got old doors that are perfect for that type of project. You can find tiles for mosaics, pipes for making your own towel racks, and many other useful materials just waiting to be repurposed. There are myriad crafting opportunities these days, but if you’re left scratching your head, wondering where to start or what to do, try a basic internet search to find ideas that interest you and appeal to your crafty side. For example, you might search for “craft ideas for old books” or “repurposing teacups.”

You will find a plethora of ideas to try. Then get out there and check out some of these local hotspots for your discounted craft goods and start creating. It should be rewarding, simple, and most of all, enjoyable.

Chronic Kidney Disease: Warning Signs And How To Manage Your Symptoms

C

hronic kidney disease (CKD) affects about one in seven U.S. adults, with ages 65 and older impacted significantly more than younger populations. Because CKD usually progresses slowly, it often goes undiagnosed, and in its early stages, the disease can be asymptomatic. In fact, most adults with chronic kidney disease do not know that they have it, which is why during National Kidney Month, it is important to raise awareness about CKD, diagnosis, and treatment.

About 2.9 percent of the New Mexico population has been told

by a health professional that they have kidney disease, not including kidney stones, bladder infection, or incontinence, with men affected at a higher rate (3.5 percent) than women (2.4 percent), according to the United Health Foundation’s 2021 Health Rankings. As with many diseases, the likelihood of developing CKD increases with age.

Adults with diabetes and hypertension are at higher risk for developing CKD. Diabetes is the most common cause of kidney failure, accounting for nearly 44 percent of new cases. With proper care, however, fewer than 10 percent of diabetics develop kidney failure.

“People with CKD can, and do, lead normal lives if the disease is recognized at an earlier stage and properly treated. However, untreated disease can progress and lead to

more severe kidney damage and other health complications. As there are no reliable symptoms of early CKD, it is important to see your health care provider to discuss your risks,” said Dr. Michael Bergeron, senior medical director with Optum New Mexico.

Kidney disease is difficult to manage for the following reasons: • Unrecognized – Often, the disease is not identified until the kidney begins to fail. In 2012, nearly 70 percent of all patients (including those with Medicare) beginning dialysis had not received care from a nephrologist at least 12 months prior to initiation of dialysis therapy.

• Multiple co-morbidities – Depending on the specific CKD stages, a patient may also have co-morbidities, such as diabetes, hypertension, bone disorders, and

cardiovascular disease.

• Frequent hospitalizations – Patients with CKD are hospitalized at least once per year on average.

Since CKD is often masked by other conditions, the actual number of admissions may be even higher than data show.

“Screening for CKD is the only reliable way to catch this progressive disease early. In the (continued on next page)

early stages, CKD can be managed through medications prescribed by your doctor and, even more importantly, they can help with controlling any other chronic health conditions you may have, many of which can make CKD worse,” Bergeron said.

When left undiagnosed and

untreated, CKD may progress to late-stage kidney disease or in some cases, end stage renal disease (ESRD), which is the irreversible loss of kidney function.

Patients with ESRD require ongoing dialysis or a kidney transplant to stay alive. Right now, 818 New Mexicans await a lifesaving transplant and 700 need

a kidney, according to the New Mexico Kidney Foundation.

Optum New Mexico’s Extensivist program is a specialized program that provides an extra level of care and attention for Medicare Advantage patients that have chronic health conditions, like CKD. The goal of the program is to provide intensive and regular care

for about three months or until the patient is stable and able to properly manage their health condition(s).

The program’s lead doctor educates and empowers patients to address lifestyles, diet, and co-morbid conditions that contribute to kidney failure, and then guides them through a detailed plan of how to help them better manage the disease.

Clara Olsen: The Woman Who Ran New Mexico

T

here’s an old saying that behind every successful man, there’s a woman.

Today, when a capable woman can achieve success on her own without having to stand behind any man, that sounds vaguely sexist, or at least outdated. But there was a time, not so long ago, when women had to exert their influence more subtly, working behind the scenes without attracting undue attention to themselves. The men they worked for got the glory, while the women were mostly left out of the history books.

Such was the case with Clara H. Olsen, who served as private secretary to 12 New Mexico governors in the early 20th century, but whom you’ve probably never heard of.

Olsen’s career in the capitol spanned 31 years, beginning with the administration of Territorial Gov. Miguel A. Otero in 1901, and continuing, with a few interruptions, until her retirement in 1935. She served under eight Republican and four Democratic chief executives.

During much of that time, women couldn’t even vote in New Mexico, let alone hold elective office.

The title of “secretary” doesn’t adequately describe her role in the office. She did far more than type letters and answer the telephone.

She functioned more as what we would today call the governor’s chief of staff and policy adviser, with the duties of a press secretary thrown in. More than that, she was the institutional memory of the executive branch. One governor, Octaviano Larrazolo, a Republican

who served from 1919 through 1920, described her as the “old pilot” who stands at the helm and steers the ship of state while the captain — the governor — sits in his chair and takes all the credit.

Another incoming chief executive put it more succinctly. When asked by a reporter if he planned to retain Olsen as his private secretary when he took office in 1923, Gov. James F. Hinkle replied, “We’ve got to have somebody in the capitol who knows how to run the state.”

Olsen’s position was exempt from the protection of the civil service laws. She served “at the pleasure of the governor” and could have been dismissed at any time, as in fact she was on a couple of occasions. But most of the men who held that office recognized that her deep knowledge of the workings of New Mexico government, her legendary efficiency, her tact and diplomacy, and her discretion in handling confidential matters, were assets too valuable to be wasted. Although she was privy to all the political intrigues that swirled around the capitol, she remained strictly non-partisan, and thus survived numerous changes of administration.

Not much is known about Olsen’s personal life. She was born in Wisconsin in 1872, taught school for a few years in Idaho, and came to New Mexico around 1899. She lived alone, collected Pueblo pottery, and never married. She was a close personal friend of Bronson Cutting, a progressive Republican and owner of the Santa Fe New Mexican.

In 1922, just two years after women’s suffrage was achieved, the newspaper published an editorial

urging the Republicans to nominate her as their candidate for governor. Olsen said she was honored but declined to run. Later, when Cutting represented New Mexico in the U.S. Senate, he corresponded regularly with Olsen, who kept him informed about the political situation at home.

Her long tenure in the governor’s office probably set a record, certainly for New Mexico, if not for the nation. It was not uninterrupted, however. She resigned in 1920, ostensibly for health reasons, although it was rumored that a disagreement with Gov. Larrazolo was the real reason.

A year later she was back, serving under a new governor, Merritt C. Mechem. Mechem was followed

by James Hinkle, who fired Olsen after keeping her on for six months to train her replacement. Hinkle’s successor, A.T. Hannett, didn’t rehire Olsen, possibly because of her friendship with Cutting, Hannett’s political enemy. But she served under three more governors after Hannett’s departure. When Clyde Tingley was inaugurated in 1935, he gave Olsen the boot again, and this time she retired for good. She lived quietly in Santa Fe for the rest of her life.

Olsen never wrote a memoir about her years in public service, although many urged her to do so. That’s unfortunate, because she must have had many eye-opening stories to tell about the politics and politicians of her day. But that would not have been in keeping with her reticent nature. Whatever secrets she knew, she took with her to the grave.

Clara Olsen died in Santa Fe in 1953. The state Legislature memorialized her in a joint resolution, citing her “devotion to duty [and] loyalty to the cause of honest government” and describing her as a “remarkable woman whose entire life, public and private, was a model of integrity, high character, and usefulness.”

RECIPES Red & Green Fiesta Stuffed Bell Peppers

his recipe is a vegetarian NM style version of stuffed bell peppers.

Growing up in Albuquerque, I have always enjoyed recipes that have both red and green chile. By adding black beans and cheddar cheese this becomes a hearty, satisfying meal. I hope you enjoy this recipe and remember, if the dinner doesn’t work out tonight you will have tomorrow to cook again. Cheers!

Red & Green Fiesta Stuffed Bell Peppers Recipe Servers 6 Ingredients: • 2TB – Avocado Oil • 1 – sweet onion, chopped • 3 stalks of celery, chopped • ½ cup of roasted green chile, chopped • 5 cloves of garlic, minced • 1 cup of chicken or vegetable stock • ½ ts – cumin • 1TB – red chile powder • 1ts – kosher salt • Black Pepper • 2 – 15oz cans of black beans, drained and rinsed • ¾ cup of fresh cilantro, chopped (optional) • 2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded • 5 – yellow bell peppers, cut lengthwise • 3 avocados • ½ cup of chopped green onions • Your favorite local salsa (there are so many great ones) Directions: - Place oven rack on the bottom position and preheat the oven to 475 degrees.

- In a large sauté pan heat the avocado oil over med-high heat. Once oil

is hot, add the onions and a pinch of salt; cook for 8-10 minutes until onions are soft and slightly browned, stirring occasionally.

- Add the celery and green chile and sauté for 2-3 more minutes.

- Add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.

- Pour in stock, cumin, red chile powder and another pinch of salt and pepper, bring to a boil then reduce heat to medium. Cook until the stock has been reduced, about 10 minutes.

- Turn off the heat and stir in black beans, 1 cup of cheese and cilantro.

- Cut the bell peppers lengthwise and remove the seeds and the pith, place the peppers on a baking sheet.

- Fill bell peppers with the bean mixture and top with remaining cheese.

- Bake on bottom rack for 10-15 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and beginning to brown.

- Remove from the oven, sprinkle with remaining cilantro and green onions and serve with sliced avocado and salsa. Yum!

Albuquerque Goes Dutch, Once Again

lright earlyrisers and bean-juice aficionados, there is a new tasty option arriving west of the Rio Grande this spring.

Dutch Bros. coffee shop is set to open a location off of Universe, near Paseo Del Norte. This site will be in addition to several others already in operation in the state.

Dutch Bros. expects to hire 40 employees locally to staff the new West Side spot,

said spokesperson Rilynn Davis.

The menu will feature the same colorfully named drinks that Dutch Bros. is already known for, including the Caramelizer, Golden Eagle, Cocomo, and Kicker. It will also be serving up the signature Blue Rebel energy drinks and many other tasty concoctions.

Dutch Bros. started as a simple coffee pushcart in Grants Pass, Oregon, by Dane and Travis Boersma. Since its humble beginnings in the early 90s, the company has grown tremendously and expanded across the country. It is now in 11 states and counting.

The Dutch Bros. business model is based not only on making great coffee but also on connecting with

community members. Employees, who are affectionately referred to as “broistas,” are known for their acts of kindness and community involvement. In one instance, the “broistas” banded together to pool money to help a fellow “broista” attend college.

affeine is considered the most widely consumed psychoactive drug in the world. It belongs to a chemical class of stimulants called methylxanthines, which exert stimulatory effects on the central nervous system, cardiovascular system, and musculoskeletal system.

Most people get a daily caffeine dose from their morning cup of Joe, but that isn’t the only place you may find caffeine. Foods such as chocolate, as well as energy drinks, tea, and even some medications also contain caffeine.

There are positive and negatives to using caffeine. On the one hand, it may reduce drowsiness, improve reaction time, and concentration.

It can even improve aerobic and

anerobic performance. On the other, caffeine accelerates food transit time in the intestines and may cause diarrhea. Gastroesophageal reflux may also occur, leading to heartburn and possible esophageal lining damage. Too much caffeine can lead to anxiety, nervousness, and a jittery sensation. Palpitations and elevated blood pressure may result from excess caffeine. Although the rise in blood pressure is transitory, repeated excessive intake may lead to hypertension-related illness, such as stroke or heart attack.

Caffeine can be found in some migraine and muscle relaxant medications. Some narcotic analgesics also add caffeine to their formula. Abrupt cessation of caffeine intake may lead to a withdrawal phenomenon.

So, what is the most appropriate amount of caffeine for a person to consume per day?

Harvard psychiatrist Uma Maidoo studied this question. Her conclusion is three cups of coffee per day. She studied close to 700

senior men for 10 years. The coffee-drinking group had 50 percent less cognitive decline compared to the non-coffee drinkers. The men drinking three cups of coffee daily had the least amount of decline.

In a 20-year Harvard study of over 200,000 patients (men and women), coffee drinkers had better longevity than non-coffee drinkers. The longest- living individuals drank between three and five cups of coffee per day, or approximately 300 to 500 milligrams of caffeine.

Now before you run to the nearest barista, there are a few things to consider. If you are not a coffee drinker, ask your health care provider if coffee or caffeine can be added safely to your daily routine.

If you are a caffeinated individual, evaluate your intake. Be aware of how much caffeine is in your food, drinks, and perhaps your medicines.

A seven-ounce cup of drip coffee contains between 80 and 175

milligrams of caffeine. A two-ounce cup of espresso has approximately 100 milligrams of caffeine. A 1 ½-ounce Hershey’s chocolate bar contains 31 milligrams of caffeine.

Remember that caffeine overdose can occur and cause very uncomfortable symptoms. However, a lethal dose of caffeine ingestion would be 50 to 100 cups of coffee.

The best part of waking up each morning is waking up! How you percolate along is up to you and your health care provider.

he spring equinox, when the sun crosses the celestial equator, occurs March 20 in the Northern Hemisphere. During an equinox, you can expect time to speed up, in a sense. Sunsets and sunrises around equinoxes are faster than at any other time because sunlight impacts our horizon at the steepest angles of the year. Then, the sun begins a dramatic decline, resulting in increasingly longer days until June 21, the summer solstice. An equinox affects all living things, from the bacteria in sourdough starter, to fish, to people, due to the changes in sunlight impacting circadian rhythms. You can expect everything to behave differently for the next month as a

published a systematic review in March 2020 stating that taking 200-400 milligrams per day of L-theanine “may assist in the reduction of stress and anxiety in people exposed to stressful conditions.” L-theanine supplementation might be a helpful support to transition with ease into longer days. For morning and daytime L-theanine use, it is common to combine it with caffeine, called “stacking.”

The notion is that L-theanine blocks the harsh jitters of caffeine while simultaneously enhancing the benefits of mental stimulation and focus. L-theanine promotes relaxation without sedative effects. Consider a two-to-one ratio when stacking L-theanine with caffeine. For example, if a cup of brewed coffee contains 100 milligrams of caffeine, stack 200 milligrams of L-theanine for balance. Some folks take L-theanine and sustained-release melatonin at night for a layered approach to restful states.
