March Is Busy Month To Prepare For 2018 New Mexico Senior Olympics State Summer Games

T

he State Summer Games will not take place for five more months but March is the time for 50 + athletes to prepare for them.

Between March and May, New Mexico Senior Olympics has sanctioned 23 Local Games in counties around the state.

While seasoned athletes usually train all year for their sports, the Local Games are a great way for beginner athletes learn the playing rules and the game formats. Information on Local Games is on the NMSO website at www.nmseniorolympics. org. Remember, athletes are not required to be pre-qualified to participate in the State Summer Games. However, athletes will be required to pre-qualify at the State level to participate in the 2019 National Senior Games to be held in Albuquerque.

flyer that lists the steps for participating in the Local Games, the State Summer Games and next year’s National Senior Games, as well as the dates and locations of all the 2018 venues.

Hard copies of the registration packet will be mailed to all athletes who competed in 2017 and a copy is also available at local game sites.

Also new this month is Wendy Luck, who has joined New Mexico Senior Olympics as the Volunteer Coordinator. In 2017, more than 600 volunteers signed up for the State Summer Games, so coordinating that many volunteers is a complex job. Wendy brings more than 20 years of volunteer management experience to the New Mexico Senior Olympics. Trained as an EMT and firefighter, Wendy has trained volunteers for emergency responses and veterans groups. The public can register to volunteer using the NMSO website and clicking on the “Volunteer” tab. Market Volatility And Your Retirement

A

fter a strong run of recordbreaking highs, major market swings have been capturing news headlines in recent weeks.

For those at or near retirement, this volatility and uncertainty can quickly become devastating, even life changing without the proper plan in place.

The Biggest Dangers to Your Retirement • Market Risk: If we learned anything from the 47% stock market decline in 2000-2002, and the 54% drop in 2008-2009, it was how quickly and dramatically markets can change. It is essential to have a plan for preservation of assets as you grow closer to your retirement goals to avoid your plans being derailed. But it is just as important to keep a focus for income and growth for a retirement that may last 20 or 30 years or more.

• Interest Rate Risk: The underlying factor behind our current market volatility, after almost a decade of near-zero interest rate policies, the Fed has begun to increase interest rates. These increases have an inverse effect on bonds (a popular retirement investment vehicle often thought of as less risky,) as well as an impact on inflation, the market and economy as a whole that will impact retirees.

• Sequence of Returns Risk: Losses are more powerful than gains, and losses early in your retirement as you begin drawing income from your investments can dramatically decrease the longevity of your savings. By taking out the income at a market low, it will no longer be there to catch the rebound on the way back up. Think of it this way: -30 + 43 = 0. If you experience a 30 percent loss, you do not only need to earn a 30 percent gain to get back to zero but 43 percent!

Adventure Awaits On The Rails

G

one is the notion that becoming a senior citizen means there’s a comfortable rocking chair waiting for us on a porch somewhere…In fact, what many seniors in Central New Mexico are finding is that there is a comfortable seat on the New Mexico Rail Runner Express just waiting to take them on their next adventure!

About two-and-a-half years ago, the Rail Runner started a program offering Seniors 62+ free rides on the train on Wednesdays. Why Wednesdays you ask? Many of the state museums are free on that day to seniors, including the New Mexico Museum of Art, New Mexico History Museum, and Palace of the Governors. In addition, several restaurants and retail locations offer discounts on that day to seniors as well.

In Santa Fe, there is a variety of local restaurants in walking distance of the Santa Fe Depot Train Station.

Right there in the Railyards, Violet Crown Cinema has popular, eventful movies with a full restaurant and bar,

or one can stroll through any number of local-flavor galleries. Take the free Santa Fe Shuttle to the Santa Fe Plaza and shop artisan arts and crafts, explore world-class museums, and indulge in fine dining.

In Albuquerque, the many restaurants and breweries provide plenty of options from the Downtown ABQ Rail Runner Station. Or, a short transit ride to Old Town or Nob Hill broadens the choices. There’s something for everyone in Old Town from shopping the locally-owned stores with unique art, jewelry, clothing, and hand-crafted goods in this historic part of the city to visiting the Albuquerque Museum of Art & History and the Albuquerque Museum - all within walking distance from Old Town. This year, the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science is home to the Da Vinci, The Genius exhibit now through July.

Since the Seniors Ride Free on Wednesdays program started, the numbers have grown each year with more than 18,000 seniors taking advantage of this opportunity, many riding the Rail Runner for the first

Tapping into this popular day of the week for seniors, Rio Metro also started a Senior Exchange Program working in partnership with the City of Albuquerque’s Department of Senior Affairs and area pueblos.

Patrons from Albuquerque’s senior centers are given the opportunity to visit elder centers at pueblos along the Rail Runner corridor, and vice versa. They ride the train free and are picked up at the station by a van provided by the facility hosting the exchange. During the exchanges, participants receive tours, eat lunch, and enjoy activities such as games and dancing. This year, the program will be expanded to include senior centers in Santa Fe. Finally, Rio Metro has built a program geared towards providing opportunities for independence through free transportation. Veterans with a VA health card can receive a Freedom Pass and ride the Rail Runner for free, for life! This same pass also gets them on most connecting buses, also free of charge.

Silver Horizons Thrift Store Coming After Record-Breaking Year Tickets on sale for annual bowling, raffle fundraiser

F

loor-to-ceiling pallets of donated pet food were recently to blame for very tight board meetings at the office of a local nonprofit. And it doesn’t even serve animals – at least not directly.

Silver Horizons, New Mexico’s only nonprofit dedicated to helping low-income seniors, is meeting its clients’ increasing needs like never before in its near 40-year history. And that means not only providing unprecedented amounts of food for New Mexicans ages 50 and older who live on less than $900 per month, but also giving tons of food for their furry companions, as well as assistance with both veterinarian bills, household bills, and minor home repairs.

But as services have increased, Silver Horizons’ 3,000-squarefoot “world headquarters” at

the edge of an industrial park off Interstate 25 has felt as if it were shrinking. In addition to the walls of pet food, the number of freezers for people food occupying the office has increased from two to 11 in the past few years. Ten more are coming courtesy of a donor.

“In 2017, we helped more seniors than Silver Horizons helped from 1980-2016,” said executive director Ron Hidalgo.

“The community has come to realize just how many seniors are struggling in silence, and we’ve all stepped it up. We realize how many are going to bed without enough food to eat and shuffling piles of bills, trying to figure out what to pay this month.”

Though a larger location for Silver Horizons is part of its plans, the organization will be opening a thrift store soon after Strikes for Seniors to enable the nonprofit to help even more

“If our home in Albuquerque becomes what we need it to be, my goal is to make us statewide,” Hidalgo said.

De Anza: More Than A Motel

I

n the long roster of colonial governors of New Mexico, only a few names stand out.

Most of the 60 or so men who held that office between the colony’s founding in 1598 and the end of Spanish rule in 1821 were political

opportunists. Some came directly from Spain, knowing little or nothing about conditions in this remote northern province of New Spain, but eager to squeeze out of it whatever personal wealth they could. A few were so egregiously corrupt that they were sent back to Mexico City in chains.

One notable exception was Don Juan Bautista de Anza, a capable administrator and soldier who served as governor from 1778 to 1787.

Now that work has finally begun on the long-delayed restoration of the historic De Anza Motor Lodge on East Central Avenue, this seems an appropriate time to remember the man for whom it was named.

Anza, a Spaniard of Basque heritage, was born in 1736 at a frontier outpost in Sonora, where his father served as a career military officer.

The elder Anza was killed in a skirmish with some Apaches when young Juan

was just 4 years old. When the boy grew to manhood, he, too, followed the profession of arms.

As a young officer, Anza participated in several campaigns, putting down Indian uprisings in the borderlands. His experiences taught him that fair dealing coupled with strength was a more effective means of achieving lasting peace with indigenous peoples than the use of force alone. It was a lesson that proved invaluable in his later dealings with New Mexico tribes.

Having proven himself in battle, Anza received a promotion and was placed in command of the presidio, or fort, at Tubac, in southern Arizona. Then, in 1774, he was chosen to lead an expedition to find a suitable route linking Sonora to the sparsely-settled province of Alta California. Guided by local Indians, Anza blazed a trail across the desert to the Pacific coast, then north to Monterey Bay. In 1776, he returned to California at the head of a larger party of soldiers, settlers and Franciscan friars, and established a presidio overlooking the Golden Gate, which grew to become the city of San Francisco.

Although Anza is probably best remembered for his pioneering role in California, the crowning achievement of his career was still to come. Upon his return to Sonora, he received word of his appointment as royal governor of New Mexico.

Anza arrived at his new post in Santa Fe at a critical time.

Hispanic settlers and their Pueblo neighbors were hard-pressed on all sides by warlike tribes: Navajos, Utes, Apaches and especially the Comanches, who controlled the eastern plains. Mounted on swift horses, they had the mobility to conduct surprise raids on outlying settlements and escape quickly, making off with sheep, cattle and even children who could be sold as slaves. Some villages had even been abandoned after repeated attacks, their residents taking refuge in the larger fortified towns. One Comanche chieftain in particular, known as Cuerno Verde for the green-painted buffalo horn headdress he wore, struck terror into the beleaguered colony.

the front range of the Rockies near Pike’s Peak. Eventually, the group intercepted Cuerno Verde and his band as they were returning to their encampment on the Arkansas River after yet another season of pillaging New Mexico villages. They met near the site of present-day Colorado City, and in the ensuing battle, Cuerno Verde was killed. Anza returned to Santa Fe bearing his green-horned headdress as a trophy.

Having thus gained Comanche respect as a formidable foe, Anza

about 600 men, composed of regular troops from the presidio at Santa Fe, local militias and Pueblo allies. In the late summer of 1779, they rode out of Santa Fe and into the heart of Comanche country.

Instead of heading due east onto the plains, as earlier expeditions against the Comanche had done, Anza led his small army north. They ventured into the San Luis Valley of southern Colorado, then across

began peace negotiations with the tribe, which went on for several years. Anza refused to conclude a treaty until the Indians agreed to select one chief to represent the Comanche nation as a whole, which eventually they did.

The peace treaty was finally signed at an elaborate ceremony at Pecos Pueblo in February 1786. It was respected by both sides down to the middle of the 19th century, when New Mexico was annexed by the United States. Even then, as the

Comanche were fiercely defending their homeland against AngloAmerican invaders, it is said that Hispanos and Pueblo Indians could still cross the plains unmolested.

Anza’s final assignment was as military commander of his home province of Sonora, but he did not live to complete it. His hard life in the borderlands had taken its toll on his health. He died at the age of 52 at the provincial capital of Arizpe in December 1788, and lies buried there today.

f you have ever dreamed about starting your own company or had an idea that kept poking at you to try, it’s not too late to give in to your inner entrepreneur.

Just ask Stuart Rose. The relative newcomer to Albuquerque worked for 25 years for a large global corporation before leaving in his mid-50s to begin his own consulting company. The move to self-employment, however,

did not slide him into retirement.

Rather, it accelerated his entrepreneurial pursuits.

At 75 years old, Rose has launched no fewer than 20 companies, a large chunk of those in the last five years. These include startups that have him traveling to China regularly; an electric vehicle-related tech business; FatPipe ABQ, a downtown coworking space in the heart of the city’s innovation district; and the BioScience Center, the only incubator in the state focused on bioscience and lifescience startups.

It was some observations there that led Rose to initiate a monthly

breakfast gathering called It’s Never Too Late to Innovate to support retirees and seniors who either have ideas for businesses or who want to bring their unique skills or life experience to a local startup.

“I looked at the entrepreneurs at the BioScience Center, and there are a number of people who … spent three to six months retired and quickly realized they were bored, or their spouse kicked them out of the house, and they went and found some technology to license and started a company,” Rose said.

“I figured there was that same attitude and interest and boredom from people who don’t have that level of resource and need a way to learn to start their own company or just want to mentor others. In many cases, they don’t need to do this now for the money – to become an entrepreneur. Their motivation is to do something that is satisfying, something they always wanted to do but didn’t know how.”

It’s Never Too Late to Innovate also provides a networking opportunity for people who, in many cases, have lost a network as they have aged.

“Just showing up, sometimes you come up with ideas,” said Lisa Adkins, FatPipe ABQ’s COO and director.

Does depression affect elderly people differently than younger adults?

Yes. Depression in the elderly often arises in the context of chronic disease or after an acute medical event, such as a stroke or heart attack. Depression increases the risk for cardiac disease and the risk of dying as a result of illness. Studies have shown that depression decreases the ability of elderly adults to recover and rehabilitate following an acute medical event. Depression also increases the risk of suicide, especially in elderly white men.

The suicide rate for people between the ages of 80 and 84 is over twice that of the general population.

What are some risk factors for depression?

There are several risk factors for depression. Social isolation and lack of a support network, stressful or traumatic life events, family or personal history of major depression, loss of a loved one, certain medications or combinations of medications and other factors can predispose a person to depression. Women and people who are single — whether widowed, divorced or unmarried — also have an increased risk for depression.

Can depression in the elderly be treated?

Yes! The first step, which can often be a barrier to receiving treatment, is to identify and diagnose depression. It is believed that older adults with depression are much more likely than any other group to try to handle the situation themselves and not seek help. Studies estimate that only 42 percent of elderly people with depression will seek professional help. If you know an elderly person who seems depressed, encourage them to go to their doctor. A primary care doctor can

use a short list of questions to assess whether a person is likely depressed. Once diagnosed, there are many treatment options.

Treatment options include counseling, psychotherapy, medications and others. Identifying social factors — such as lack of a support system, loneliness and social isolation — and developing strategies to get a depressed person involved in social activities are often very helpful.

Joining a community center or volunteering is a good way to get out and be active. It is known that volunteering and helping others increases physical health and improves mood.

Stop a cold before it starts

New research: Copper stops colds if used early.

N

ew research shows you can stop a cold in its tracks if you take one simple step with a new device when you first feel a cold coming on.

Colds start when cold viruses get in your nose. Viruses multiply fast. If you don’t stop them early, they spread and cause misery.

Turnpike east of Pittsburgh, near the charming town of Bedford, Pa., is the Omni Bedford Springs Resort, which boasts one of the oldest golf courses in America.

The Old Course, as it’s called, has been restored to the intent of its designer, Donald Ross.

Originally built in 1895 by Spencer Oldham, in 1912 the course was redesigned and reduced to nine holes by A.W. Tillinghast, then redesigned again in 1923 by Ross and returned to 18 holes.

The course runs up a narrow valley from the resort hotel, itself one of the oldest in the nation.

What it lacks in length it delivers in tightness, maddeningly subtle greens and the reality that Shober Run, a creek, comes into play on nearly every hole. Also nearby are the Flight 93 National Memorial and the National Museum of the American Coverlet. Rates: $99-$179 May 1 through mid-November.

Florida Steamsong Red, one of a trio of courses in Lakeland, Fla., an hour south of Orlando, is No. 17 on Golf Digest’s “Top 100 You Can Play” list. Soon to join it is the newly opened Streamsong Black, a Gil Hanse design which was named by Golf magazine “Best New Course” to open in 2017.

Hanse’s routing takes advantage of sand dunes left over from an old phosphate mining operation – making you think you’re on a links course in Scotland.

I’ve been thinking about letting it lapse, but I’ve heard that I can actually sell it for a nice payout.

What can you tell me about this?

Interested In Selling Dear Interested, Selling a life insurance policy, even a term life policy that you don’t want or need any longer – a transaction known as a “life settlement” – has become a popular option among retirees in recent years that could use some extra cash. Here’s how it works.

A life settlement is the sale of an existing life insurance policy to a third party company for cash. Life settlements are typically best suited for people over age 65 who own a policy with a face value of $100,000 or more or someone younger who has experienced a significant change in health.

Protect your privacy: When you sell your life insurance policy, you will have to sign a waiver authorizing the release of medical and other personal information so that the buyer can determine how much to offer for your policy. Before accepting any offer, make sure that the company has procedures in place to protect the confidentiality of your information.

Understand the tax implications: The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act recently updated the tax treatment of a life settlement to be treated the same as the surrender of a policy back to the insurance company. This can be complicated, so be sure to consult a tax advisor.

Other Options If you want to keep your life insurance policy but could use some extra cash, you may have some other options. For example, some life settlement companies may allow you to keep part of the policy’s death benefit while eliminating your premium obligations. You can also ask your life insurer if you can borrow against your policy, or if you’re in poor health, see if you’re eligible for accelerated death benefits. You should also find out if you’re able to convert the cash value of your policy into an immediate annuity (through a 1035 Exchange), which would make regular payments to you for a set number of years or for the rest of your life.

ven though the Duke City has been experiencing unusually mild weather, winter is in full swing and there’s no better way to brave the mild cold than by cooking something up that’s warm and delicious.

When thinking of “cozy” meals, the first thing that came to mind is a soup that my cousin, Catalina Parker, made for me twice, both times I was under the weather. Her delicious homemade “Green Chile Chicken Corn Chowder” warmed my soul and made me feel so much better. She is a Master Soup Maker and this one hit the spot ... more like two or three. She made my soup with fresh corn from the cob and it was perfect.

As she says in her recipe below, it is very versatile and can be used in different ways.

Also to warm our bones is a drink created by Valerie Bertinelli on her Food Network cooking show, Valerie’s Home Cooking, called the “Dark N’ Fiery Drink,” which she made for her local firefighters.

Catalina’s Green Chile Chicken Corn Chowder Serves: 12 Ingredients: • ¼ cup olive oil • 2 large onions, diced • 3 large carrots, diced • 5 stalks celery, diced • 3 poblano peppers, seeded and diced • 2 jalapeno peppers. Seeded and diced (more for added kick) • 3 medium russet potatoes, scrubbed and cubed • 6 fresh ears corn, corn removed from the cob, or 2 cans (drained), or frozen • 4 cloves garlic, minced • 1 teaspoon salt • ½ teaspoon pepper • 1 teaspoon ground cumin, or to taste • ½ teaspoon thyme, or to taste • 1 tablespoon chicken bouillon granules or 3 cubes • 3 quarts low sodium chicken broth • 3 tablespoons fresh cilantro, or parsley, minced (I’m sure my soup came without cilantro) • 2 cups roasted green chile, peeled, seeded and chopped • 3 cups cooked chicken, cut into large dice (sometimes I use a roasted chicken from the grocery store) • 1 cup half-n-half cream Directions: Heat oil over medium heat in a large stockpot. Add onions, carrots, celery, poblanos, jalapenos, potatoes and fresh corn. Add salt and pepper.

Saute’ for 6 minutes. Add garlic, cumin, and thyme. Continue cooking for 8-10 minutes until vegetables begin to soften. Stir in chicken bouillon.

Add the chicken broth, cilantro or parsley and continue cooking for 10-12 minutes, or until carrots and potatoes are tender. Lower heat to a simmer.

Stir in diced chicken and chopped green chile and simmer until chowder thickens and chicken is heated through. Adjust salt and pepper to taste.

Just before chowder is done, put about 1/2 of the chicken and vegetables into a bowl and puree the remaining stock to make it smooth.

Remove from heat. Stir in the cream, add the reserved chicken and vegetables, some more chopped cilantro or parsley and serve with a hearty bread.* If you want it thicker soup, melt 3 tablespoons butter in a small saucepan, add 3 tablespoons of flour, whisking to blend. Cook 3 minutes, add to soup.

Optional Garnishes (choose any or all): Shredded cheese, sour cream, fried tortilla strips, lime wedges, chopped cilantro or parsley, freshly roasted corn kernels, hot sauce.

Can be put in a heat safe bowl and covered with puff pastry to make pot pies. (Skip puree and thicken).

Can also be used as a sauce over stuffed corn tortilla rolls and layered in a casserole dish to make Green Chile Chicken Enchiladas.

Dark ‘n’ Fiery Recipe courtesy of Valerie Bertinelli Show: Valerie’s Home Cooking; Episode: It’s Getting Hot in Here Yield: 2 drinks Level: Intermediate Ingredients: • 4 ounces fresh lime juice • 2 ounces orange liqueur, such as Cointreau • 12 ounces ginger beer • 2 lime wheels • 4 ounces high-proof rum, such as Bacardi 151 Ginger beer, 4 oz orange liqueur Directions: Special equipment: a long wooden match (not as long as a fireplace match, but longer than normal) In a 2-cup liquid measure with a pour spout, stir together the lime juice, orange liqueur, and ginger beer. Place ice in two rocks glasses; divide the mixture evenly between the glasses, leaving at least 2 inches between the top of the glass and the liquid. Float a lime wheel over the ice in each glass to act as a barrier; pour the rum over the lime wheels.

Set the glasses on a heatproof surface with nothing above; place a baking sheet nearby. Using extreme caution, light a long wooden match and carefully hold it right above one of the glasses--the flame will turn a deep blue color and the top of the cocktail will ignite. Light the second cocktail, then run the match under cold water to extinguish -- simply blowing on the match is not enough because the wood soaks up the rum.

Let the cocktails burn for a few seconds, then extinguish the flames by placing the baking sheet on top of the glasses and holding it there for at least 10 seconds.

Squeeze the “roasted” lime wheels into the cocktails, stir and enjoy!

Get A Termite Inspection Before You Buy A Home

he following information about termite inspections is important whether you are buying a house or are a Realtor in a home sale transaction. Recently, a home buyer purchased a house using a Realtor, but neither requested a termite inspection.

After moving in and conducting some remodeling, the buyer discovered a severe termite infestation. He is suing his Realtor for not requiring an inspection.

In New Mexico, it is not required that you have a termite inspection when you buy a home, although some mortgage companies require it as does the Veterans Affairs in certain situations. So, if you are buying a home, ask your Realtor

to arrange an inspection, and if you are a Realtor, it is in your best interest to recommend a termite inspection inspection in every home sale.

Termites are very common in New Mexico, and if your home has them, an inspector should also be able to determine the species.

The most common is the arid land subterranean termite. Unless left untreated, they do minimal damage. Another species, the Eastern subterranean termite, is found throughout the eastern and central portion of the country and as far west as eastern New Mexico. There is a pocket of them in Albuquerque and a pocket in Santa Fe. These termites are very destructive. The third kind is the drywood termite. While they are uncommon locally, they do occur, so an inspector should check for them.

identifying and locating other wood-destroying insects, such as powder post beetles, false powder post beetles, long-horned borers and metallic wood borers. There was a case a number of years ago where a termite inspector didn’t find any evidence of subterranean termites in a house, but he walked right by evidence of drywood termites. The home ultimately needed fumigation.

Another inspector cleared a house but missed wood boring beetle damage. When the homeowner went in the attic, he fell through the ceiling as a result. The inspector either didn’t recognize wood boring beetle damage or didn’t enter the attic.

When you hire an inspector, it is best to hire someone who is not in the termite treatment business specifically, because you want someone who has no vested interest in finding termites. If termites are found, make sure you hire a good company to treat for them and that the company measures the depth of the foundation footer, as most termiticide labels require them to treat the soil down to the footer.

Many companies merely measure the house, then base their price on use of four gallons of termiticide per 10 linear feet. In reality, they should use four gallons of termiticide per 10 linear feet, per foot of depth of footer. If the footer is two feet deep, the company should then use eight gallons of termiticide per 10 linear feet. If the inspector does not follow the label, not only is that person not doing the job properly, but also, he or she is violating the law.

Insist that the graph of the home be completely legible. Many are drawn so poorly that it is difficult to determine the nature of the treatment procedure and the location of the damage. It should be clear, easy to read and understand, and should include all required measurements. If the graph isn’t as it should be, call another company.

Most importantly, if you are a Realtor, make sure any home you help sell or buy has a termite inspection before the sale is closed.

It could prevent a lot of problems.

In the case above, the buyer eventually had the home treated, but it was done improperly, as the footer was much deeper than a foot. The buyer is now going to sue the termite company.

Foster Grandparent volunteers must be willing to serve an average of 20 hours per week and must be able to pass a background check, physical, and tuberculosis test. Foster Grandparent volunteers serve one-on-one with children, working with them to build their social and emotional development as well as help improve their literacy skills.

People want a healthy cocktail I’ve had many patients that would like to enjoy an occasional drink but find that because of health issues (celiac for example) they are unable. Others are interested in the best (least toxic) path to take when they imbibe. St. Patrick’s day is in our midst, so, it’s an excellent time to address this topic, because not all alcohols are equal.

The Shot At The End Of The Rainbow- Kick Green Beer To The Curb For A Luckier Shot

What’s wrong with green beer or any beer for that matter?

I recommend against American wheat-based products, for many reasons, primarily due to the chemical contaminants involved in processing and because gluten proteins can be irritating and potentially inflammation provoking for some individuals.

Individuals with inflammatory conditions (such as arthritis or heart disease) would do best to avoid wheat-based beer. Beer isn’t just dandy for everyone else though. It also carries toxins produced by fungi named, HT-2 and deoxynivalenol (DON).

According to research published in the Journal of Food Chemistry in 2015, of 154 samples of beer, these toxins did not exceed safety levels for daily intake. Who wants even a small amount of unnecessary toxins in a nonnutritive beverage if there are alternatives? Not to mention,

This fermented drink might just be too mysterious for those of you that like to know what you are putting in your mouth. (Don’t even get me started on dirty taps!)

Wine too?

Those of you turning your wine nose up at beer drinking friends might want to hold off a second.

Wine isn’t necessarily a pure adult beverage. Non-organic grapes are often subjected to pesticides and herbicides to keep expensive grapes flourishing. The chemical most of my patients seem to be reacting to in wine is the sulfur dioxide (sulfites) used to preserve it. There are organic sulfite-free wines, but like beer, according to the Journal of Food Microbiology ochratoxin A (OTA) mycotoxin’s from fungus, might be present.

Finally, another ingredient that sensitive folks might have trouble with is yeast. So what then are your options?

The Shot At the End of The Rainbow: The clearer, the better when it comes to hard liquor. I recommend grain free liquors such as potato vodka (organic if possible) and agave tequila (100% pure agave) because they tend to be the easiest to process for a wide variety of my patients. Do some research to discover top shelf quality for the best price and feel free to look into the next level of liquors including gin, whiskey, and sake. Avoid adding sugary mixers and instead use a rainbow

of helpers like lemon, lime, mint, ginger, basil, and salt to get your flavors going. Dilute cocktails with ice, and pure or sparkling water to add hydration and ease the intensity of flavors.

Hydration is essential Consider the old trick of an eight-ounce glass of pure water for every shot of alcohol to keep body concentrations balanced. Often people feel the urge to urinate more when they drink. This is because alcohol suppresses the release of antidiuretic hormone, ADH (the hormone that helps you retain urine). The more the alcohol, the less the ADH and the more you will need to pee (and dehydrate)! For those of you with a weak bladder, take caution!

Cautions Alcohol can be a fun way to explore good spirits with friends!

Choose best options knowing no choice is completely free of toxins. Most importantly, even one drink can impair cognitive abilities. If someone is seriously injured or killed by a car you’re driving even after just one drink; it will always be considered your fault, so don’t drink and drive.

It was the Roman term for the day that came in the middle of each month.

In 46 B.C, Julius Caesar reformed the Roman calendar by adding 10 days to the 355day year, instituting January 1 as the first day of the new year (beginning in 45 B.C.) and introducing a leap year every four years.

Caesar was an extremely popular ruler. Before he went to the theater of Pompey to attend a Senate meeting, he had been advised not to go, but he did not listen. His doctors had told him not to go for medical reasons, while his wife, Calpurnia, did not want him to go based upon troubling dreams that she had. The message to Caesar from a soothsayer was “beware the Ides of March”. Fearing that Caesar had garnered too much power, a group of Roman senators stabbed him to death on March 15, 44 BC. SCHS historian David C’de Baca sheds light on this extraordinary period of American History, followed by the life and times of Presidio soldiers leading up to their support of the American Revolution. As part of our effort to honor local families, learn about the Tafoya family of New Mexico, to include their Old-World ancestry and their colonial ancestor’s valuable contributions. This is a budding initiative to honor our colonial veterans that will continue to periodically honor other local families to be included in a proposed National Monument dedicated to Spanish and Pueblo Colonial Era veterans. The event will feature a collection of original Presidio Era oil paintings commissioned for the bi-centennial of Juan Bautista De Anza’s historic founding of San Francisco.

If you have been relatively inactive during the winter months, your joints may have gotten a little stiffer, and your muscles may have weakened. Turning your head to look back, turning the steering wheel quickly, or braking safely may all be affected. Begin each day with a slow easy warm –up.

Vision is constantly changing.

It might be harder to see people, things, and movement outside your direct line of sight. It may take longer to read street or traffic signs or even recognize familiar places. This may be particularly bothersome at night. Glare from oncoming headlights or street lights can be a problem. Depending on the time of the day, the sun might be blinding.

Don’t forget to check with your specialist if you have diabetes, glaucoma, cataracts, or macular degeneration. Some medications can also interfere with vision. If you have glasses for driving, wear them! Yearly eye exams with prescription updates are recommended. You may also want avoid night driving or sunrise and sunset driving when glare is worst.

As we get older our hearing acuity diminishes. Hearing horns or sirens may be more difficult.

Hearing loss can be a problem because these sounds warn you when you may need to pull over or get out of the way. Newer cars may compound the problem by being nearly sound –proof. After age fifty it is recommended that our hearing be tested every three years.

Try to keep the inside of the car as quiet as possible while driving.

disease or any of the other types of dementia, driving may still be viable in the early stages. However as memory and decision-making skills worsen, driving activities need to stop. Recognizing this is particularly difficult for the afflicted individual. Getting lost or having difficulty finding one’s way home are tell-tale signs that it is no longer safe to drive.

Many of the medications have warnings about driving or operating machinery. Heed these warnings. Supplements and herbal remedies may also affect your driving.

What if you are not the driver that needs assistance but you know someone who does need help?

Discuss problems with your friend/ loved one regarding new dents in the car, comments from neighbors or friends about his/her driving such as speeding, swerving or traffic violations.

All of these precautions can easily be applied to biking or even walking. Wear appropriate headgear and bright –colored clothing so that others can see you.

In Shakespeare’ play Julius Caesar, on his way to that fateful Senate meeting Caesar passes the soothsayer and says “the ides of March are come” and the soothsayer replies “Ay, Caesar; but not gone.”
