ummer is the ideal time for a getaway, but maybe you haven’t planned this year for a pricey vacation that requires a passport. Why not stay close to home while enjoying all of the amenities and attractions of a tourist?

A staycation is “a [vacation] spent in one’s home country rather than abroad, or one spent at home and involving day trips to local attractions,” according to the Oxford dictionary. Albuquerque’s central location makes the concept easy, as many notable destinations are within a few hours’ drive. Here are some leisurely locales sure to pique your interest for summer travel or a day trip any season:

Jemez Springs: Nestled in the mountains of the Santa Fe National Forest just more than an hour northwest of Albuquerque is one of the most popular mineral hot springs in the state. At the Jemez Bath House located along the Jemez River within sight of Virgin Mesa, one can enjoy spalike benefits in a peaceful, forest setting. Boasting 17 healing minerals within its “Giggling Spring” waters, the Bath House had its grand re-opening in May, offering massage and body scrub and other enhanced spa services (jemezspringsbathhouse.com).

Also along the river is the Canon del Rio Retreat and Spa. Spend the night in one of their six adobe rooms, and wake up to what its website describes as an “enormous, delicious Southwest style breakfast.” Billed as a “Spa-RetreatB&B,” guests are encouraged to fish, picnic or meditate among the property’s six-acres.

Located in the heart of the village is Los Ojos Bar and Saloon, a favorite of locals and visitors. With its rustic western atmosphere and Southwestern and American fare, Los Ojos is a popular stop for bikers and campers during the warmerweather months.

North of the village is the Jemez Monument Historic Site, where the remains of the San José de Guisewa Church have stoically stood for more than 500 years, shadowed by the walls of San Diego Canyon. It is one of the largest missions in the United States.

Farther along the Jemez Mountain Trail Scenic Byway (State Highway 4) is the Valles Calderas National Park, home of one of just six super volcanoes in the world.

Secure one of the 35 daily vehicle permits issued by the preserve, and look for elk herds along the vast 13-mile wide caldera. Due to the potential for erosion on back roads from heavy winter and spring snow run-off, it is wise to call about conditions before visiting (575-829-4100). Visitors can hike, bike, ride horses or fish the upper Jaramillo Creek and the East Fork Jemez River.

You may want to attend the annual 4th of July Parade and Fireworks show in Jemez Village, enjoying a slice of Americana as staff and campers from Hummingbird Music Camp, located four miles north of the village, march in the parade along with members of local sports teams, churches, politicians and business leaders who hand out candy to parade-goers along the route. You may even catch a glimpse of Smokey Bear atop a local fire engine before heading to the craft fair, or have a bite and a craft beer at the newly opened Second Alarm Brewhouse.

In August, check out the Jemez Pueblo Independence Day Ceremony and Run. Stay at one of many cottages available for rent in the village or at one of the mountain lodges just north of town in La Cueva.

Madrid: The former coal mining town has experienced a metamorphosis, from ghost town to thriving arts community. To get there from Albuquerque, drive the picturesque Turquoise Trail for an hour to Madrid (pronounced MAH(continued on next page)

drid). Mill about one of the town’s many art galleries and menagerie of shops, then cool off with a Mad Chile Margarita at the Historic Landmark Mine Shaft Tavern. Stay for some great eats or for one of the many live bands playing on its patio in the heart of town.

For an overnight visit, stay at a cabin or casita, or experience the impeccable coffee and comfy accommodations at Java Junction B&B.

High Road to Taos: Within a 15-minute drive north of Santa Fe, begin your journey along the historic High Road to Taos Scenic Byway. Experience the striking and enchanting pinon- and chamisadotted hills taking you through Nambe Pueblo, known for its museum quality silver metal alloy pieces. There are also opportunities for swimming, fishing and camping at Nambe Falls Recreational Area.

Continue up the byway to Chimayo, home of the culturally celebrated Santuario de Chimayo.

A hole in the mission-style church floor allegedly contains healing earth that miraculously replenishes itself after visitor-upon-visitor remove a bit at a time for the blessings they believe it to bestow. Further along your journey, visit Ranchos de Taos, just south of the town of Taos, and make sure to stop at the revered San Francisco de Asis Mission Church. Multiple artists, including Georgia O’Keeffe, have interpreted in paintings and photography the simplicity and grandeur of its form through their art. Learn about the oldest, continually inhabited community of Taos Pueblo and the history of the Red Willow People, the pueblo peoples who have called Taos home for hundreds of years.

Stop for a quick bite or a five-course meal at any one of a multitude of restaurants, cafes and breweries.

Enjoy traditional Mexican food at Antonio’s, or take in “organic, regional bounty” in the shabbychic atmosphere of the Love Apple restaurant, located in a former Catholic chapel.

hat is shingles?

Shingles is a painful skin rash that usually occurs on a localized area of your body or face. Initially, the area of

affected skin may feel itchy, tingly or painful. In a few days, a rash will develop with small, fluid-filled blisters. Over the next two to four weeks, the blisters will crust over and heal, but they may leave mild scars and residual pain known as post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN).

How common is shingles?

In the United States, an estimated 1 million cases of shingles occur every year, and one in three people will get shingles in their lifetime.

Who gets shingles?

Older adults most commonly get shingles. It is not completely understood why people get shingles, but a contributing factor may be a weakened immune system as a result of age, injury, stress, medications, or other reasons.

The majority of people who get shingles will not get it again, but it is possible to get shingles more than once.

What causes shingles?

Shingles is caused by varicella zoster virus (VZV), the same virus that causes chickenpox.

In the past, chickenpox was very common in the United States, with about 4 million people contracting the disease every year.

After a person recovers from a VZV infection, the virus can remain dormant in some nerves of the body. In many people, the virus remains dormant

Can shingles be treated?

If you are seen and diagnosed soon after the rash develops, shingles can be treated with antiviral medications. These include acyclovir, famciclovir or valacyclovir. If started within three days of the rash developing, these medicines can reduce the pain and duration of shingles.

Other medications are used for symptoms, including over-thecounter pain medicines, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, and topical antibiotics to treat secondary bacterial infection.

Can shingles be prevented?

Two vaccines decrease the risk of getting shingles. One is Shingrix, and the other is Zostavax.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Shingrix is the preferred vaccine, but Zostavax may still be used.

Vaccination is recommended for people 60 years of age and older.

The vaccines can also reduce the chances of developing PHN after

the rash resolves. Check with your doctor to determine which vaccination is best for you.

What do I do if I get shingles?

See your doctor to determine whether you should start taking antiviral medication. Take care of any skin sores by keeping them clean and dry. Drink plenty of fluids and eat right.

Vaccinations are an effective way of decreasing your risk for shingles. Check with your doctor for recommendations. Here’s to your health!

My husband and I love to travel but hotel costs eat up our budget so much that we can’t afford to go as often as we’d like. We’ve used Airbnb with some luck but are wondering if there are other options for budget-conscious retirees.

But, if you’re willing to do a little research and preplanning, there are a number of ways you can lower (or eliminate) your lodging costs and live more like a local when you travel. Here are some different options to consider and some websites that can help you locate them.

Lower Cost Rentals There are literally millions of privately-owned properties in the United States and abroad that are offered as short-term rentals.

This has become a very popular alternative to hotels for retirees.

Renting a fully furnished apartment or house is usually cheaper than hotel rooms of comparable quality, and they almost always offer more space, a homier feel and a kitchen, which can save you the expense eating out every meal.

Short-term rentals are offered through the individual property owners or property-management companies. Some of the best sites for finding them include Airbnb. com, HomeAway.com and FlipKey. com. These sites are free to use for travelers.

They then fill out a questionnaire asking where they’d like to travel and how much interaction they’d like to have with their hosts. On the other end, hosts are not offering rental properties and a key in a drop box, but their own homes, along with conversation and companionship, for much less than the price of a hotel.

House Sitting If you have a flexible schedule and you don’t mind doing a few household chores when you travel, house sitting is another option that offers lodging for free.

How it works is you live in someone else’s home while they’re away for a long weekend or even a few months. And in exchange for the free accommodations, you take care of certain responsibilities such as their pets, lawn, garden, mail, etc.

To find these opportunities, try sites like Nomador.com, MindMyHouse.com, HouseCarers.

com and TrustedHousesitters. com – they all charge a small membership fee.

Home Swapping Another way to get free accommodations when you travel is by swapping homes with someone who’s interested in visiting the area where you live.

To make a swap, you’ll need to join an online home exchange service where you can list your home and get access to thousands of other listings. Then you simply email the owners of houses or apartments you’re interested in – or they email you – and you make arrangements.

Most home exchange sites like HomeExchange.com, HomeLink. org and Intervac-HomeExchange. com charge membership fees ranging from $50 to $150.

A Jewish Bride Of The Santa Fe Trail

lora Langerman Spiegelberg, 18, described herself as a Jewish bride of the Santa Fe Trail when she and her new husband arrived by stagecoach in Santa Fe in 1875. To this urbane young woman, born in New York, reared in San Francisco, educated in Europe, and fluent in three languages, Santa Fe must have seemed like a dusty outpost on the fringes of the civilized world.

The territorial capital of some 5,000 inhabitants was nothing like the trendy tourist destination and arts mecca of today. Most of the amenities we take for granted, from indoor plumbing to paved streets to public schools, were lacking. During her 15 years of residence there, she

made it her goal to bring beauty and culture to Santa Fe, and to a large extent she succeeded.

Flora’s husband, Willi Spiegelberg, 12 years her senior, was no stranger to New Mexico. He was the youngest brother of pioneer merchant Solomon Jacob Spiegelberg, who had come to Santa Fe from Germany around 1844 and established a mercantile store on the south side of the plaza. As his business prospered, Solomon Jacob’s five younger brothers emigrated one by one to join the firm, Willi arriving in 1861. Together they formed the partnership of Spiegelberg Brothers, engaging in wholesale and retail trade, and later banking, throughout the territory during the last half of the 19th century. Willi later entered politics, serving as Santa Fe’s mayor from 1884 to 1886.

Willi had returned to Germany on business when he was introduced to Flora in Nuremberg, where she was living with relatives while completing her education. They soon became

engaged and were married in 1874.

They were a striking couple: Willi by all accounts handsome and charming, Flora a tall, attractive redhead. They spent a year-long honeymoon touring Europe before sailing back to New York. From there they went by train to Colorado, where the rails ended.

The final leg of the journey was a jolting six-day stagecoach ride.

At meal stops along the way, they were served beans, bear meat and buffalo tongue. “I did not relish this food,” Flora wrote dryly in a memoir published many years later. She also saw Indians for the first time and was, she wrote, “terribly frightened.”

The couple moved into a new house on East Palace Avenue, reportedly the first in Santa Fe to boast running water and gas appliances, and Flora soon established herself as a rising star on the capital’s social scene. She hosted many important gatherings and (since Santa Fe had no synagogue) Jewish religious observances.

Among the guests who dined at her table were Pres. Rutherford B. Hayes and former president Ulysses S. Grant, as well as local dignitaries.

An accomplished pianist, she often performed difficult classical pieces for her guests.

Flora did not confine her activities to entertaining. In 1879, she established the first non-sectarian school for girls in Santa Fe, and the first children’s playground and garden. On Saturdays she taught Sabbath school for Jewish children in her home, and on Sundays taught Sunday school for Catholic children, no doubt at the request of her good friend, Archbishop Jean Baptiste Lamy.

Despite their different faiths, Flora and the archbishop were kindred spirits. They shared a love of music, gardening and European cuisine, and enjoyed conversing in French.

Both were hands-on gardeners who encouraged the planting of trees, shrubs and flowers to beautify the city. The Spiegelbergs contributed generously to construction of St. Francis Cathedral. Lamy

reciprocated by sending them flowers, wine and baskets of fruit on the Jewish high holidays.

One year, on the feast of Corpus Christi, an incident occurred that might have caused trouble in a less tolerant community. A religious procession was bearing the figure of La Conquistadora, possibly the holiest symbol of Santa Fe, through the streets of the city. The day was hot, and the men carrying her stopped to rest in the shade near the Spiegelberg home. No one noticed when 4-year-old Rose Spiegelberg, Willi and Flora’s youngest daughter, walked up and removed the dolllike Madonna from her draped litter and carried her away. Only after the procession reached its destination was the loss discovered. All Santa Fe was distraught, but no one could find the missing Madonna. That evening, as she was putting Rose to bed, Flora discovered the hallowed icon among the child’s dolls. Realizing the gravity of the situation, she rushed to the archbishop’s residence, full of apologies. But far from being angry, he burst out laughing when she explained what had happened.

A few months later a beautiful new doll arrived from Paris, a gift from Lamy to replace the one Flora had so abruptly snatched away from her daughter.

Eventually the Spiegelberg brothers liquidated their commercial and banking interests in New Mexico and retired to live out their days in other parts of the country. Willi and Flora were the last to leave, in 1890. They settled in New York City, where Willi died in 1929. In her later years, Flora remained active in civic affairs, as a crusader for improved public sanitation in the city. She died in 1943.

A plaque honoring the contributions of the Spiegelberg family has been erected in Santa Fe’s Railyard Park. Recently it was defaced by some unknown vandal who scrawled the word “Jews” across it in white paint. At this writing, no one has been charged with the crime.

Make Visiting An Albuquerque Museum A Family Affair

great way to introduce children and grand children to new educational activities and perhaps make the excursions a family affair is to visit some of Albuquerque’s museums. Here are some Albuquerque Museums you can enjoy visiting this month, as well as some exciting new exhibits.

Casa San Ysidro, 973 Old Church Road, Corrales. Shirley and Ward Minge purchased a 19th century adobe building in the 1950s and transformed it into “a plazuela-style rancho” to display their New Mexican art collection. They’re remembered for their dinner parties and for having a working farm, a function Casa San Ysidro continues today. The couple donated their home to the City of Albuquerque in the ‘90s, and the home now serves as a venue for community events throughout the year. Summer hours are June – August Tuesdays - Saturdays: 10:30 a.m., noon & 1:30 p.m.

Gutierrez-Hubbell House, 6029 Isleta Blvd. SW. Located in Albuquerque’s South Valley, the 5,700-square-foot adobe structure was built during the 1860s and represents the melding of the Spanish, Anglo and Native American cultures during the New Mexico Territorial Period (1848-1912). Situated along the historic Camino Rael, the house sits on 10 acres of Open Space Land, and this spring became home to New Mexico Dahl Sheep. Good Luck New Mexico Seniors!

I

n 2017 New Mexico Senior Olympics, Inc. (NMSO) learned that the National Senior Games Association (NSGA) was considering Albuquerque to be the host of the 2019 National Senior Games. NMSO Board of Directors made a change to “Open” State Summer Games to out of state contenders in order to allow New Mexico athletes to raise the level of competition and increase participation.

In 2018, over 2800 NM athletes qualified for the ‘19 National Senior Games in 20 sports. It was the NMSO Board of Directors’ goal to encourage as many qualifiers to get excited about participating in the National Senior Games. Seven local established game sites were pre-selected based on local ambassadorship and contingency, to assist NMSO. The Statewide Torch Relay idea was established.

The goal was to cross the state and energize qualified athletes to attend the 2019 National Senior Games presented by Humana, June 14th – 25th. In January the first Statewide Torch Relay was held in Silver City; then the torch proceeded to the following communities: Town of Mesilla, Mescalero Apache, Roswell, Santa Fe, Bernalillo, Farmington and the final leg will be run onto the Albuquerque Civic Plaza for the official Flame Arrival.

The Flame Arrival Celebration will include a posthumous tribute by NSGA, to the Founder of New Mexico Senior Olympics, Ernesto Ramos, and will follow with the lighting of the Cauldron on Civic Plaza, Saturday, June 15th at 7:00 p.m. The torch bearers will include two athletes from New Mexico, Esther Felipe, Acoma, who competes in Track, Road Race and Power Walk and Colleen Burns, Torrance County, who competes in Track, Swimming and Road Race.

The 2019 National Senior Games (NSG) is the 31st Biennial multi-sport event for seniors age 50 and older. The ‘19 Games has a historical registered number of athletes at 13,712 with 1513 representing the New Mexico delegation. New Mexico has 30 athletes who will be defending their Gold medals from the 2017 National Senior Games. For a complete list of the 2017 results, visit www.nsga. com . Larry Johnson, 99 is New Mexico’s eldest registered athlete who will compete in the 50m track event. Plan to watch Larry at the UNM Track venue in the 95-99 age division, on Sunday, June 16th at 1:00 p.m.

National Senior Games Celebration of Athletes is the highlight for the athletes to be introduced during the Parade of Athletes. Flag bearers for the NM delegation will be Andrea Weiss, Edgewood, Badminton and Mario Quintana, Silver City, Team Softball and Shuffleboard. The Celebration of Athletes will take place Wednesday, June 19th at 7:00 p.m. at University Arena “The Pit!” For more information on daily event competitions and celebrations, please visit www.nsga.com. Dream becomes Reality ERNESTO RAMOS

“New Mexico’s Founder of Senior Olympics”

Ernesto Ramos’ life was one of dedication to volunteerism and service. Over a span of 45 years he helped change the landscape for senior programs in New Mexico.

The 2019 National Senior Games Athlete Village, where athletes will check-in, congregate for entertainment and activities is named “Villa Ernesto Ramos Athlete Village Health and Wellness Expo”in his honor. His vision dates back to the 1979 first year of the games for 155 participants to over 3000 game participants in 2018 Annual State Games. Under his leadership New Mexico’s team was invited to be part of the establishment of the first National Senior Gamesin St. Louis, Missouri in 1987. His dream was to bring Nationals to New Mexico.

Ernesto passed away in 2017 and the New Mexico Senior Olympics Board of Directors named the annual state games in his honor going forward as the “Ernesto Ramos Senior Olympics State Games”. A tribute to Ernesto at the 2019 National Senior Games presented by Humana will be held at the Flame Arrival at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 15th at the Albuquerque Civic Plaza.

National Senior Games are the largest multi-sport event for Adults 50+. National Games have 13,712 registered athletes, of which 1,513 are from 27 New Mexico counties.

Exercise, Your Life Depends On It

y patient was 69-year-old man who came to the New Heart New You program at New Heart Fitness and health. He was concerned because his blood pressure had not been well controlled. He had a strong family history of heart disease. He still smoked ½ pack of cigarettes daily. At the New Heart New You program he spent 3 hours a week for 12 weeks meeting weekly with a trainer and nutritionists. A risk assessment indicated that he was high-risk for heart disease and stroke.

the body’s response to insulin. He was prediabetic. The exercise will help make insulin the makes more effective and reduce the chances of his becoming diabetic.

Patients often ask me whether exercise can turn the clock back. In fact, there is data suggesting that people who are regular exercisers do have changes in their DNA that go along with a longer life. There are structures at the end of the DNA molecules that protect the DNA called telomeres. As we age these telomeres shorten and at that time the DNA that they are to protect begins degrading. Studies have shown that regular exercisers at age 70 can have telomeres that look like they’re 15 years younger.

How much should you exercise? The latest guidelines suggest that we should be doing at least 2 ½ hours a week of aerobic exercise and then 20 minutes twice a week of strength training, stretching and balance training.

This program began by focusing on his lack of exercise. His job required to sit all day. In the evening, he watched televsion. As a preventative cardiologist, I always start with exercise. If I can get a patient to begin an exercise program, they will take care of other problems that pose a risk to their heart such as improving their nutrition and weight management and stopping smoking.

Exercise has important metabolic effects. The LDL cholesterol or the lousy cholesterol found in the atherosclerotic plaque in the arteries is responsible for strokes and heart attacks It can be reduced with exercise diet and cholesterol-lowering medication. Exercise itself raises HDL cholesterol and lowers LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Additionally, exercise improves

High intensity interval training has become very popular. Carefully designed analysis of the many studies on this subject have been inconclusive in terms of its benefit over continuous exercise. Some studies suggest that it produces more weight loss than continuous exercise and others suggest that one can get a level of fitness in a shorter period from high intensity interval training than from continuous exercise.

Exercise improves cognitive function. It improves the ability to focus and improve memory. In part this may be the benefits of exercise on the circulation brain but also may be the result of overall improvement in people’s health.

So, with the Senior Games in New Mexico we are seeing the best of older people who recognize the powerful impact that exercise can have on their physical and emotional well-being. I congratulate all of you, I do suggest you that while you are here that you join us at Project Heart Start on June 15 and learn for lifesaving techniques.

What You Need To Know About The National Senior Games

E

xcitement is building as a national event that has been more than three years in the making is finally coming to Albuquerque this month. The National Senior Games, the biggest multi-sport, Olympic-style event in the world for seniors age 50 and above, begins June 14 with two weeks of 20 sporting competitions located in and around the metro area.

A record has been broken even before competition begins, with the registration of more than 13,700 athletes. It’s the largest in the event’s 32-year history, exceeding the 2017 games by by 30 percent. (Games are held every other year.)

Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller at a news conference in May attributed Albuquerque’s weather, elevation and culture as reasons for the larger numbers visiting the city for the games. “It’s no surprise that so many athletes are making their way to the Land of Enchantment to compete,” he said.

As host state, New Mexico is well represented, with 1,516 local athletes competing. That’s the most out of any state in the country.

“Albuquerque has put out an amazing welcome mat for us,” said NSG CEO Marc Riker at the conference. “We can’t wait to show off your city to the national audience, while highlighting the amazing athletes that will be competing.”

The Athlete’s Village, called Villa Ernesto Ramos, will be located at the Albuquerque Convention Center and open to the public. Touted as a Health and Wellness Expo and athlete experience by NSG, the village will be a hub of activity for athletes and onlookers, offering special presentations, demonstrations and interactive displays about best practices or healthful aging. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet with a variety of health and wellness experts and vendors.

Sports events are open to the public at no cost. Included are track and field, badminton, archery, basketball, volleyball, swimming, softball, pickleball, cycling and golf. For a complete schedule of events, venues and more, visit NSGA.com.

• “Launchpad to What’s Next, LIVE!” 6 p.m. June 18, Kimo Theatre: The program promises to be an educational experience for empowering lifestyle changes for healthy and active aging.

• The Celebration of Athletes, 7 p.m. June 19, The Pit at the University of New Mexico: Billed as a combination of opening and closing ceremonies held midway through the games, the celebration will honor the achievements of the athletes. Local celebrities and dignitaries will welcome them, and entertainment is scheduled by Mariachi Nuevo Sonido, the National Institute of Flamenco and Chill House, featuring Hillary Smith, among others. Of course, the evening wouldn’t be complete without the Parade of Athletes.

• Olympic Day, June 20, Albuquerque Convention Center: Keynote speakers include U.S. Olympian Trish Porter-Topmiller, who will be sharing her personal stories of competition, and Dr. Becca Jordre, director of the Senior Athlete Fitness Exam (SAFE) who will lead a fitness challenge to all ages.

o you realize that you may be renting out space in your home even as you read this?

Most homes have a dozen or more spiders living in it that you, the landlord, aren’t aware of. The good news is, these spiders pay rent of sorts by eating and, therefore reducing, the number of unwanted bugs in your home. They are also much more efficient and safer than an exterminator who prays toxic pesticides.

These little tenants will live under furniture, in closets, corners, basements, attics, garages, storage sheds or other buildings. Many of them will live their entire lives without meeting their landlords.

So, if you have spiders, there is no reason to evict them. Spiders are our friends.

Of course, if you are afraid of spiders, you may want to get rid of them so you can relax. A lot of people have this fear, but you can overcome it. When I first started in the bug business more than 40 years ago, I had a morbid fear of spiders but now don’t even mind when they crawl on me.

The technical term for the condition is arachnophobia, derived from the Greek words “arachne,” meaning “spider,” and “phobos,” meaning “a fear.” The fear of spiders may have had its roots in Europe during the Middle Ages. Spiders were considered a source of contamination, and any food that came into contact with them was considered poisoned.

If they fell into the water it was thought to be undrinkable. Spiders were originally thought to spread the plague (Black Death) by biting people. Fear of the plague clouded people’s perceptions of the spiders, and they were blamed for all sorts of illnesses and epidemics simply because they were present.

The fear of spiders has persisted in our society, and it is actually encouraged by the pesticide industry. Many companies want to “control” spiders by spraying your home with pesticides. They are actually preying on your fear.

While I’m no psychologist, I can tell you the way I overcame my fear was to face it and educate myself about spiders. I started by reading all the literature I could about them. I watched them spin their webs and stalk their prey.

Finally, after several weeks I let one crawl on me. It didn’t bite me and I didn’t have a heart attack. I went under houses and crawled through their webs. It was a bit disconcerting at first, but soon I had no fear. Now I have no problem crawling through hundreds of spider webs under a house. I’ll even pick up black widows. None have ever bitten.

Although most spiders possess venom glands, most are too small to break the skin with their fangs and have no desire to do so. All

spiders will bite in self-defense if they are handled carelessly, such as being squeezed. Most bites occur when people roll over on one in bed and get bitten, or when dressing and a spider inside the clothing bites because it gets pressed against the skin. I am not saying all spiders are harmless.

Black widows are certainly capable of producing a serious bite and any such bite by this spider should be considered a major medical emergency. The brown recluse is also dangerously venomous but rarely bites.

You can spray spiders with EPA Exempt pesticides, which are safe.

Greenbug is a good example. You can also repel them by spraying populated areas with peppermint essential oil.

CASA (City of Albuquerque Senior Affairs) Kitchen Looking for volunteers to support a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen that prepares food for seniors in the community. Hours are anytime between 4:00a.m. – 12p.m, Monday through Friday. Participate in preparation and distribution of food.

Follow proper procedures in handling of food, portion control, sanitation, nutritional requirements and safety procedures. Some food handling experience is preferable; however volunteers will be trained for areas of help where are needed. Most volunteer activities will involve food prep (slicing, dicing, serving, and packaging) and kitchen sanitation (wiping, sweeping, mopping and dish washing). The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) Advisory Council Needs members to join its efforts in promoting awareness and educating the community about FGP and senior issues. Council members advocate on behalf of FGP volunteers, evaluate the Program’s effectiveness, and assist in the recognition of Foster Grandparents by raising funds and in-kind resources. Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) is looking for volunteers age 55 and older who are interested in making a difference in a child’s life. Foster Grandparent volunteers must be willing to serve an average of 20 hours per week and must be able to pass a background check, physical, and tuberculosis test.

Foster Grandparent volunteers serve one-on-one with children, working with them to build their social and emotional development as well as help improve their literacy skills. Volunteers receive mileage reimbursement, supplemental liability insurance, meals while on duty, pre-service and monthly trainings, and recognition throughout the year.

Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at Presbyterian and UNM Hospitals The Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at Presbyterian and UNM hospitals offer a place for parents to rest and regroup right at the hospital, just moments away from their sick child. The Family Rooms are open seven days a week and are staffed by hospital volunteers. The Family room volunteers greet families, maintain visitor data, stock food, drinks, and help families with their needs.

Shalom House: David Specter Shalom House offers a complete package of senior living and care services. Residents are independent seniors who need a little help sometimes. Shalom house is looking for a volunteer to help serve meals on Thursday’s from 11a.m.-1p.m.

Silver Horizons - Silver Helping Seniors: Every month, Silver Horizons partners with the City of Albuquerque to provide free groceries to over 3,500 seniors, and to about 1,200 grandchildren many of these seniors are raising. Together, we are making a big, positive difference in the lives of so many of our elderly. But we can’t help these struggling seniors without volunteers. Opportunities to help include volunteering in Silver Horizons’ food warehouse, distributing food and helping seniors shop at food markets, and joining our volunteer staff at Silver Horizons’ thrift store.

rushing and flossing after each meal is a primary line of defense against bacteria that can cause bad breath, gum disease and tooth decay. Nutrition plays a vital role in dental health from the contact food physically makes in the mouth and the microbiological components it provides through digestion and the bloodstream. Still, beneath the gum line, some bacteria and pathogens are so stubborn they can’t be fought with brushing, flossing or proper nutrition alone. These bad actors are best confronted with water flossing, or oral irrigation.

Oral irrigation was developed in the 1960s by a dentist and engineer to help with periodontal disease. Since then, it has been tested and researched for numbers of dental health concerns, from periodontal disease to dental appliance infections. In 2009, Dr. Bill Costerton of the University of Southern California School of Dentistry found a 99.9 percent removal of plaque biofilm using a ‘Waterpik’ brand dental water jet for only a few seconds using medium pressure.

Gingival tissue and teeth trap debris can attract biofilm plaque that contains bacteria and pathogens that can lead to gum disease. Oral irrigation helps to force out stubboran plaque that often lies just beneath the gumline.

Pressured water along the gum line and between the teeth, breaks down the biofilm and releases debris below the gum line, unlike floss or brushing. For those with periodontal pockets, crowns, implants, braces, applications or treatments, water irrigation can keep potential voids, or pockets clean and clear preventing infections or bacterial growth. Folks with sensitive gums can use low pressure and warm water in their device. Most machines run around $50, and travel versions can be found for just a bit more.

Oral irrigation can be a backup plan for those that just won’t or can’t floss. According to Denise Parker, a registered dental hygienist, “Daily oral irrigation leads to a

reduction in pro-inflammatory cytokines. … (It) appears to pick up the slack in patients whose home care is less than ideal.” Water irrigation may also be helpful in cleansing other mouth sores in the soft tissue of the gums and cheeks.

If you are planning dental work, it’s a good idea to get a jump start on oral irrigation before your procedures, so there are fewer bacteria in your mouth. If you have a metabolic imbalance such as diabetes, oral irrigation is an essential practice to keep cavities and gum disease at bay.

Solutions to Consider for Irrigation Irrigant solutions may contain water alone, or mixtures of water with things like acetylsalicylic acid, hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite, chlorhexidine (1:3 water), povidone-iodine (1:9 water), or Listerine. If you choose to use anything other than water, check first with your dentist.

Once you develop the healthy habit of oral irrigation, consider repopulating microbiome with a healthy diet. Lactobacillus bulgaricus and streptococcus thermophilus found in many yogurts can be beautiful, but steer clear of those brands with high sugar. Consider foods like Shiitake mushrooms that contain adenosine, carvacrol, copalic acid, and erythritol for balancing oral bacteria. Onions, leafy greens and cinnamon (whose compounds can kill oral bacteria) help as well. To keep the microbiological peace, stick with a food plan that minimizes blood sugar spikes.

Almonds lower blood sugar and increase saliva, but they are difficult to chew for those with dental concerns. Try soaking them in filtered water overnight to help them soften and sprout for better results.

Smile The most essential part of any dental plan is a healthy smile. Many people have dental woes and notice imperfections in their teeth and gums. Consider that others may be focused on their own troubled toothy past, not yours. Smiling can make you feel vulnerable, but if you find the courage to do it, you will increase your health and that of those around you. Abundant Smiles!

ohnnie Nash released the song I Can See Clearly Now in 1972. The lyrics spoke about the disappearance of the rain and pronounced a bright sun-shiny day ahead.

These are all good things as long as precautions are taken. Extended exposure to the sun’s rays has been linked to significant eye problems, including cataracts, macular degeneration, pingueculae, pterygia and photokeratitis.

In areas like New Mexico, common eye conditions related to sun damage are pterygium and pinguecula. Pinguecula is a white or yellow raised area within the conjunctiva, the gelatinous layer that covers the white of the

Sunglasses and goggles can assist with limiting progression.

Special eye drops are available to treat the associated inflammation and redness.

A pterygium is more obvious because it is a white wedge or wing-shaped growth over the surrounding pigmented part of the eye. If this continues to grow, then it may lead to scarring of the cornea, which could cause permanent vision loss or distortion.

If the pterygium is progressing, then surgery may be required to remove it to save vision.

The clear covering over the front of the eye known as the cornea is susceptible to sun- related inflammation. This is called photokeratitis. Blurred vision, tearing, light sensitivity, along with redness or eye pain may signal photokeratitis. Remember to wear sunglasses at the beach or at White Sands. Skiers are also

prone to this condition if their eyes aren’t protected. This is usually a temporary condition, but does require treatment with antibiotic and artificial tear eye drops to help it along. Cold compresses can also be used to help with the discomfort.

Years of unprotected sun exposure to the eyes can result in the formation of cataracts.

While cataracts are usually associated with aging, evidence has shown that with prolonged strong sun exposure, cataracts develop more rapidly. Research is also showing that those who eat healthful diets in the form of green leafy vegetables, fruits and antioxidants, and refrain from smoking are reducing their chances for cataracts. UV400 sunglasses are recommended for the best sun protection.

Sun can damage the area just off the center of the retina referred to as the macula. The macula provides our sharpest vision. This causes loss of central vision, resulting in blurred vision

and eventually blank spaces in vision. Progression is usually slow. Macular degeneration may begin as early as age 50 in those individuals who have worshipped the sun. While there is no current cure for macular degeneration, there are various treatments depending on the severity of the case.

Just as I have warned of the dangers of the sun to our skin, please take care to wear sunglasses outdoors at all times during the day. Avoid the sun’s strongest UV rays between 10 a.m. and 4p.m., and get regular eye exams.
