t’s time for funloving New Mexicans who belong to school groups, civic organizations, church groups or any other non-profit entities to volunteer for the 2018 New Mexico Senior Olympics State Summer Games. The games require about 500 volunteers to run like clockwork, said New Mexico Senior Olympics volunteer coordinator, Wendy Luck.

The State Summer Games will be held July 18-22, 2018 in locations around Albuquerque. Luck explained that volunteers can register for at least one four-hour shift in one of several areas; most volunteers so enjoy the Games they sign up for several shifts.

Volunteers are needed for game support, fruit and water distribution, souvenir sales, results posting and athlete check-in. All volunteers will be provided with advance training during one of several orientation sessions held ahead of the Games. New Mexicans with specific knowledge of certain sports, including track, swimming, badminton or tennis, can volunteer to judge those sports or to interact directly with senior athletes during the events.

Volunteering for the State Summer Games is rewarding and fast-paced.

It’s open to anyone who is at least 16 years old and participants will receive a T-shirt and a goodie bag, a certificate, and an invitation to attend the kick-off party before the Games.

Volunteers who participate in the 2018 State Summer Games will also have the first shot at volunteering for the much larger 2019 National Senior Games. The National Senior Games are being held for the first time ever in Albuquerque June 14-25, 2019.

The National Senior Games -- which attracts approximately 10,500 athletes and an additional 15,000 fans from

around the country -- will require more than 3,500 game volunteers.

New Mexico Senior Olympics has made it easy to sign up as a group, said Wendy Luck said. Volunteers can sign up online. Go to nmseniorolympics. org and click on the “Volunteers” tab in the upper right-hand corner. From there, click on the link to pull up the directions to register. If you need assistance with the online sign up process, call Luck directly at 505-2101930. Volunteers can also visit any Senior Center and request assistance.

The State Summer Games is a 24-sport annual competition for men and women age 50 and older. It is the largest multi-sport competition in New Mexico for active seniors.

Athletes compete in 5-year age divisions. Sports include Air Gun, Archery, Badminton, Talent, Tennis, Track & Field and Triathlon. There is no pre-qualifying to register for the State Games. This is a qualifying year for 2019 National Senior Games.

Late registration is $75 and available June 1- 15, 2018.

The mission of the New Mexico Senior Olympics is to promote physical fitness for New Mexico adults 50 + and provide year-round motivation to participate in local, state, and national games. New Mexico Senior Olympics, Inc. is funded in part by the New Mexico Aging and LongTerm Services Department for health promotion activities. The Spy Who Got Away

S

omething was going on up on the Pajarito Plateau, something very hush-hush.

The exclusive Los Alamos Ranch School had been taken over by the government early in 1943.

Now the whole area was ringed by wire fences and patrolled by military police. Officially, it didn’t even exist. Its address was a post office box in Santa Fe. Unofficially, people referred to it as “the Hill.”

The Manhattan Project—code name for America’s atomic weapons program—had come to New Mexico. Along with it came international espionage. The site on the Hill had been selected in part for its isolation, making it difficult for any spies inside the secret laboratory to communicate with contacts on the outside.

Travel was restricted. Mail was censored. Phone calls might be monitored.

In nearby Santa Fe and Albuquerque, Army counterintelligence and the FBI watched bus and train stations for any suspicious travelers. FBI

agents posing as waiters and desk clerks at Santa Fe’s La Fonda Hotel eavesdropped on dining room conversations and kept track of who came and went.

Nevertheless, a few spies managed to smuggle atomic secrets out of the lab. They were working not for the Axis powers but for America’s wartime ally, the Soviet Union. Three have been identified by name; there may have been others.

Two of those spies, Klaus Fuchs and David Greenglass, were arrested just a few years after World War II ended. The sensational trials that followed made their names familiar to all Americans alive at the time.

Less well known was Theodore Alvin Hall, whose espionage activities were not revealed until much later. He was a Harvardtrained physics prodigy, just 19 years old when he was recruited to work at Los Alamos in 1944.

He was assigned to a group working on the design of the device code-named “Fat Man.” Their task was to find a way to compress the bomb’s plutonium

core to a supercritical mass quickly enough to trigger a nuclear explosion—a subject of great interest to Soviet scientists who were trying to solve the same problem.

Hall was an amateur spy, motivated by his idealistic communist leanings. He met several times with his former college roommate, Saville Sax, to whom he passed top-secret reports on the group’s progress.

Sax, in turn, passed them on to Soviet agents. Once the Russians realized the value of this information, they replaced Sax with a more experienced courier, a woman named Lona Cohen. She arranged a meeting with Hall on the University of New Mexico campus in Albuquerque which, after several delays, took place in early August 1945.

Cohen was aware of the high level of vigilance in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, so she opted instead to make Las Vegas, NM, her base. She remained there for three weeks, traveling by bus each weekend to Albuquerque to (continued on Page 6)

meet with Hall, who repeatedly failed to show up. Finally, on the fourth try, they made contact.

Hall presented her with a five- or six-page report on the successful testing of Fat Man, which he had witnessed. Cohen folded the document and hid it in the bottom of a box of tissue paper. Then she returned to Las Vegas, immediately packed her bags and headed for the railroad station.

What happened next became legendary in the annals of the KGB. When she arrived at the depot, Cohen found it swarming with security men.

Plainclothes agents were questioning every departing passenger and searching their bags. Unfazed, Cohen hung back until it was almost time for the train to leave. Then, acting

the part of a ditzy tourist, she hurried onto the platform. As two agents questioned her, she chattered inanely, fumbled for her ticket, tried to open her suitcase, but found the zipper stuck. She handed her box of tissue to an agent to hold while she struggled with it. The train was about to pull out. Finally, the exasperated G-men released her, apparently concluding that such an airhead couldn’t possibly be mixed up in anything shady. Cohen thanked them, picked up her bags and rushed toward the car. “Wait! You forgot your tissues!” the agents called out, unwittingly handing over the box containing the papers that could have landed her in the electric chair.

It was a masterful bit of misdirection. Although we might not approve of Cohen’s trafficking in military secrets, it’s hard not to admire her sangfroid in that tense situation.

By the late 1940s, the FBI had begun to unmask the spies who had been active during the war.

Fuchs and Greenglass received lengthy prison terms. Cohen and her husband, Morris, managed to slip away to England, where they were discovered a decade later living under assumed names.

Arrested there on unrelated espionage charges, they, too, went to prison. In 1969, they were released in a spy swap with the Soviet Union, where they lived for the rest of their lives.

Hall and Sax were questioned by the FBI and put under intense surveillance but were never arrested or charged. Although there was a strong case against them, prosecutors decided that a trial would compromise confidential FBI sources and methods. They were not publicly exposed as spies until 1995, when previously classified documents were released by both the U.S. and Russia. By then Sax was dead. Hall lived until 1999. Late in life he admitted in a carefully worded statement that he had indeed been “in contact” with Soviet agents while working at Los Alamos.

he New Mexico Arts & Crafts Fair started in 1962 and was held in Old Town Albuquerque as part of the 50th Anniversary celebration of New Mexico’s statehood. New Mexico Governor Ed Mecham and Potter Maria Martinez were the ribbon cutters at the first event. A few years later the fair was moved to the State Fairgrounds when it outgrew Old Town, and has been held there ever since.

The New Mexico Arts & Crafts fair recognizes that the arts are a unique and intriguing part of our culture. This is why the Fair has been a valuable and viable destination for art enthusiasts for 50 years. The Fair has provided many well-known artists with beginning opportunities for their art careers. The Featured Artist for this year’s Fair is Glass artist Steve Knox. Steve is known nationally and internationally as a leading stained glass artist.

We have a large Silent Art Auction. The proceeds’ from last year’s Silent Art Auction allowed us to donate over 5,000 meals through the Roadrunner Food Bank. We hope to expand our donations through this year’s Silent Art Auction.

For the 57th Annual NMACF we will have a special Keynote Exhibit. This year’s Keynote is the New Mexico Quilters Association.

They will have a large display of handmade quilts in Hall C. Our Youth Keynote this year is R4Creating, a STEM robotics learning organization. They will have robots and drones in Hall C as well. NM foods and products will be in Hall C of the Manuel Lujan Building.

This will be the final New Mexico Arts & Crafts Fair, so come and be part of our Farewell Celebration.

Film Roles For Ages 50+ Fairly Common, Very Competitive Experience not always necessary, but stamina and fit physique are

I

n addition to looks, fame and fortune, Sandra Bullock, Hugh Grant, Brad Pitt, and Denzel Washington, among a host of other big names at the box office, have this in common: They are all over 50. Hard to believe, but even Jennifer Aniston will join them next year in the bracket that qualifies a person for AARP membership.

When it comes to acting, Hollywood still prefers – or, unabashedly worships - youth. But with the baby boomers occupying more theater seats, these youngish “seniors” and elder royalty like Helen Mirren, 72, and Meryl Streep, 68, aren’t losing any screen time.

What does this mean for the average person over 50 who wants to be in film? You’re not too late to start – so long as red-carpet paparazzi, or even a living wage, isn’t what you’re after.

In fact, Albuquerque casting director Elizabeth Gabel says 45 percent of people who seek background work through her company, EG Productions, are over age 50. “My largest percentage in my database is retired people, so it’s very competitive, and you have to be very proactive,” she said.

Albuquerque resident Carolyn Wickwire, who is 81, is proof that will and skill can trump age when it comes to the local film industry.

The Paris, Texas, native didn’t begin her acting career in earnest until age 52. She had figured acting lacked financial security. So, her

career years were spent working her way up in administration at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas after graduating from Southern Methodist University. Though she took a few weekend acting workshops and classes along the way, her experience until taking early retirement mostly consisted of ad-libbing a few lines on stage in kindergarten and taking a role in a high school play.

That all changed fairly quickly once she had time to really concentrate on learning the field – taking regular classes, getting background work (cast as an extra) and finding an agent. She found herself landing parts in film, professional theater and commercials.

But it was when she moved to New Mexico just three years ago that the opportunities really took off. “I bet I’ve had 10 times the number of auditions in the last three years than I was getting in Texas,” she said, explaining how the film industry is more vigorous here thanks to the state tax incentives for film production.

Wickwire’s credits include Better Call Saul, Longmire, Fast Color, In Plain Sight and Prison Break.

She says her biggest and best TV role was as a guest star on the CBS Saturday morning program The Inspectors. She played a grandmother. She has also been cast in a handful of local plays, including the Adobe Theater’s comedy Doublewide, Texas, earlier this year, where she stole the show with a command performance that had the audience teary-eyed from laughter.

“I don’t think age is a factor in my age group” in the industry, she said, though admittedly roles tend to be typecast.

There is a fairly consistent need for people to play a grandparent, hospital patient, retiree, shopper and the like, said Wickwire’s local agent and owner of the

O’Agency, Lynette O’Connor. The O’Agency finds speaking roles for professional actors in film and TV. To rise to that level, O’Connor says a person needs to have had some serious training “to learn the etiquette, to learn how to handle yourself in an audition room, to learn terminology, to be able to take direction and know what they’re expecting of you when you go into an audition, etc.”

However, for anyone who is just starting classes or who is reluctant to invest time and money in training before seeing if they like the business, finding work as an extra (non-speaking role) is a good first step that requires zero experience. But even then you don’t just walk onto a set and announce you’re ready for your crowd shot.

who do that and they do work more than everybody else.”

2) Be prepared to work long hours (12-18 hours at a time).

“You have to be prepared for that if you’re older…The first time you’re on set it’s a shock. You’ll wonder, ‘Is this even physically possible?’

Well it is. We do it all the time.”

3) Appearance, especially weight, matters. “Mostly extras are hired for their looks whereas actors are hired for their acting talent.

People who are retired tend to get heavy and I can’t hire people who are overweight. … Your body is your business; that’s how you sell yourself, and if you don’t fit the role, you just don’t fit the role.”

She also advises aspiring men to keep their hair short: “In no circumstances do I want older men with long hair. They think it would be great for a Western, but men in the 1800s did not have long hair.”

For those following these suggestions, Gabel says, there is a decent chance for a spot. “If I have to hire 100 people, 20 of them would be in the retirement range.

“They finally have the time to do it since they don’t have to work and unfortunately, a lot of them need an additional income without jeopardizing their Social Security.”

While pay ranges dramatically, no one should expect to make a living as an extra. Pay is based on the number of days needed.

Average is about $120 daily, Gabel said.

Even coveted speaking roles aren’t going to replace paychecks from a “typical job.” A year of work for Wickwire brings in what amounts to a little vacation money.

If you get into acting, she says, you do it because you love it.

“I’ve always had an interest, and when I was able to go into it after I retired, it just felt like I was finally fulfilling my passion and I love it all – film, TV, theater. I figure maybe I’ve got another 10 active years, and I just want to cram everything in I possibly can.”

Acting Advice from a Pro

Whether you want to get speaking parts in film or simply find work in the background, here are some tips from local casting director Elizabeth Gabel. Keep in mind that these proactive steps are not a guarantee of success but will help you be competitive in a crowded field: • Take acting classes and attend them regularly. Do not think one or two classes will teach you how to be an actor. It is an on-going lifetime learning experience. You can find qualified coaches on www.nmfilm.com.

• Get involved in as much theater as you can. Volunteer to do props or lighting or whatever you can to get into the acting environment.

Audition for any roles you feel you would fit.

Go to www.abqtheatre.org for theater auditions.

• Audition for any appropriate role in student and low-budget films no matter the pay. Work for free or for pizza. Just build your resume.

Look for audition opportunities on www.nmfilm.com under casting calls.

• Register with all of the extras casting directors listed at www.nmfilm.com. Follow these casting directors on Facebook.

• Get a professional headshot and do an acting resume.

• Get an agent. This is the most difficult of all. Look for agents listed on www.nmfilm.com. You must get two letters of recommendation.

Once you have an agent, they will submit you for appropriate roles.

Ready To Downsize? Don’t Rush It Move can be liberating if done with proper planning, positive mindset

ummer is the season that “Open House” placards take up residence on medians and at neighborhood corners citywide. If these beacons of house sales get you thinking that maybe now is the time to move from your 3,000-squarefoot home of 40 years to an 800-square-foot apartment – it’s a seller’s market, after all – the most advantageous thing to do may be to hold off till 2019.

That’s because downsizing whether from a large house to a smaller one, or from a house to an assisted living space, is not just a physical move from one place to another; it’s an investment of time, money and emotion when done right.

Phyllis and Robert Boverie, who are real estate brokers in their 70s, closed on the sale of their 2,700-square foot home of 18 years in April. The couple and their dog, Paloma, moved from the semirural and picturesque Sandia foothills to just less than 1,200 square feet in an apartment complex near Wyoming and

Menaul the same month. Though it would appear they made the transition quickly, there was a lot that had to happen to make the physical move occur as smoothly as it did.

“We started preparing the house for sale and decluttering and donating to thrift shops more than a year before the move,” Phyllis said.

“It also gave us time to mentally prepare. … The hardest thing for me was leaving the views, that rural atmosphere, the rabbits and the quail and the deer.”

For Robert, it was divorcing himself of about 600 books. “That was painful,” he said. “I just had thought that one of these days I would get away to rereading or revisit some of them. Now I can still do it, but I’m gonna have to find them (elsewhere).”

Assuming his collection wasn’t rare, that should be fairly easy since the Tony Hillerman Library sits across the street from the Boveries’ new place. That convenience was just one of many they considered outside of square footage and interior layout when determining where to land. Others included: easy access to a courtyard for them and Paloma, availability of a reservable guest room at the complex, the age of the majority of other residents and the apartment’s “urban” location. Despite Phyllis’ attachment to her former mountain views off Tramway, both she and her husband have discovered they like the 20-minute (or less) drive to anywhere now that they are more centrally located.

“When touring a facility, whatever kind it is, keep in mind the spaces that are not behind the door you’ll have a key to,” said real estate broker Talia Freedman, owner of Talia Freedman and Co. “The whole purpose of downsizing is to make your life better, and if it doesn’t do that, then you may be looking at the wrong place.”

Here are some other downsizing tips from the pros: Observe the qualities you love in your home, and seek those out when considering where to relocate: Will you be happy in a place without a lot of natural light? Would you really miss not having a private porch? What do you most enjoy doing, and will those activities be easily accessible or possible? For example, Freedman knew a woman who loved gardening at her home and moved to an independent living facility that allows her to plant and nurture flowers throughout its grounds.

Spend money to update your original 1980s looker: This may involve painting, new carpet, refreshing the landscape, and conducting minor repairs that you have lived with for decades but that may not be easily overlooked by buyers. “It may make you a lot more money to spend a little money rather than just sell it as is, which is often people’s instinct because it’s so much easier to leave it the way it is.”

Buy the next home before selling the one you’re in.: If financially feasible, move out before you pound the “For Sale” sign into the yard. “It’s much easier to sell a house if you’re not living in it,” Freedman said. “Seniors are often home most of time and it’s difficult to get out of the house for showings, which can be multiple times a day without a lot of notice.”

Get organized: If you get paralyzed just thinking about what to take with you in the move and what to sell, donate or throw away, consider hiring a professional organizer. Or follow this strategy Freedman used when moving her parents from New York to Albuquerque recently: “The only question you need to answer is, ‘What do I feel I absolutely must take with me?’ It is the only question that matters. Then once you know what you’re taking with you – I need my TV and my comfy chair - then you can look at everything that’s left over and figure out what you’re doing with it.”

Get help – from the pros and friends: Depending on your energy levels and financial resources, it may make sense to hire a mover. While there are multiple moving companies to choose from, Albuquerque-based About Seniors Moving (http:// aboutseniorsmoving.com/) specializes in assisting seniors. The company, which will pack your home, move you and unpack you in a day, is even familiar with the floor plans of independent living facilities to better determine how to place furniture upon arrival.

And call upon your support system. “The help of our friends was vital to this whole process,” said Robert Boverie. “They just made it a more festive atmosphere (when it came to getting ready for the estate sale and the move itself.)

“Our friends brought champagne and wine and pizza when we moved in to the apartment.”

Make the move before life events force you to: The Boveries agree that while their move wasn’t easy, it was made less stressful because they had the right attitudes about it and they were making the transition together. “It’s so much easier to do it together than wait until there’s one left and make all the decisions and do all the work,” said Robert.

“This whole move has been liberating to me - to have fewer possessions, to have less things to consider, to worry about, to take care of.”

hat do I need to know about food safety?

Food safety is a very important health issue. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that about 17 percent of Americans, or 48 million people, become ill every year as a result of eating contaminated food.

Of those, 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 will die. It is important to understand the symptoms of foodborne illness and to know what you can do to decrease your risk.

What can I do to decrease the risk of getting a foodborne illness?

The CDC recommends four key things to do: clean, separate, cook and chill.

• Clean means to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water before, during and after handling foods. Use hot, soapy water to wash your utensils, countertops and other surfaces that come in contact with food.

Lastly, thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables under running water.

What are some of the symptoms of foodborne illness?

The most common symptoms are upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and, in some cases, fever.

Symptoms can develop hours or days after eating contaminated food. In the majority of cases, the duration of symptoms is limited to a few hours to a few days, and recovery occurs without specific treatment. Occasionally, however, illness may be more severe.

Signs that warrant medical evaluation include fever of 101.5 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, blood in the stools, severe vomiting so that you can’t keep any fluids down, diarrhea lasting more than three days, or signs of potential dehydration, such as very dry mouth and dizziness. ummer is here, and family and friends are coming together more and more. So what better way to spend quality time and enjoy the Albuquerque weather than inviting your guests over for a delicious taco bar and a margarita, or two? Everybody loves tacos, and creating a make-your-own taco bar is an easy way to entertain.

• 1/4 cup vegetable oil, plus more for cooking • One 1-ounce package achiote paste • 1 tablespoon adobo sauce • 4 chipotles in adobo sauce • 1 clove garlic • Pinch kosher salt • 2 pounds boneless pork butt, sliced into 1/2-inch-thick slices, then into 1/2-inch-wide strips

There are many varieties of tacos - from seafood to barbacoa, to chicken to street tacos, or something really simple like ground beef with diced potatoes, onions and seasonings. That’s what I grew up loving.

Below is a recipe I also enjoy from Jeff Mauro called Horizontal Tacos al Pastor, which calls for salsa. The recipe for that is below, too.

Taco shells vary from crispy to soft. I prefer crispy, but if you’re going to use soft, keep the flour or corn tortillas warm until they are ready to be served. Set them out with a variety of toppings so your family and guests can enjoy the taco they love best.

• 12 fresh 6-inch white corn tortillas • 1 yellow onion, 1/4-inch dice • 1 fresh pineapple, peeled, cored, 1/2-inch dice • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro leaves • Cotija cheese, crumbled, for serving • Salsa, for serving (homemade recipe below) Directions: Puree 3/4 cup of the pineapple juice, the vegetable oil, achiote paste, adobo sauce, chipotles, garlic and salt in a food processor. Mix the pineapple juice mixture with the pork in a freezer bag and move around to coat. Marinate the pork in the fridge, one to two hours.

Preheat a cast-iron skillet or grill to medium-high heat. Lightly oil the skillet and add the tortillas, toasting, about 30 seconds per side.

Remove the tortillas and store in a towel to keep warm.

Increase the heat under the skillet to high and add 1 tablespoon vegetable oil. Remove the pork from the bag and wipe off any excess pineapple juice mixture. Cook the pork in batches until charred and cooked through.

Remove the pork from the skillet. Chop the meat into bite-size pieces. Add half of the onions and the fresh pineapple, and quickly cook until lightly browned about two minutes. Add the remaining 1/4 cup pineapple juice and the chopped pork back to the skillet with the juices.

Place the pork, pineapple and onion mixture in the tortillas. Top with the remaining onions, cilantro, cotija and salsa.

Feel free to adjust to your own taste. Many people love cilantro; I, personally, do not. I know this sounds like a lot of heat, but once mixed up, it’s really not too hot.

Liz’s Homemade Salsa • 10 jalapeño peppers • 10 yellow hot peppers • 3-4 Habanero peppers (adjust to your heat level) You can also substitute with four serrano peppers.

• 5-6 scallions (use the green onion part only) • 1 small bunch of chives • 1 can diced tomatoes • 2 cans diced fire roasted tomatoes • 2-3 cloves finely chopped garlic • 1/4 teaspoon cumin • 1/8-1/4 teaspoon crushed oregano (to taste) or more if fresh • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder • 1 tablespoon Extra Virgin olive oil • 2-3 dashed red wine vinegar • Salt to taste Boil jalapeño, yellow hot and habanero peppers. When the peppers are boiled to medium soft, seed and remove the stems. Divide equally to blend in three batches. In the first batch, add a can of tomatoes, garlic, garlic powder, cumin, and oregano, and blend until smooth (puree). In the second batch, add another can of tomatoes and 1/3 of the peppers, and blend it slightly less. In the third batch, add the last can of tomatoes and the remaining peppers, and leave chunky. Then mix the three batches together in a bowl. Add chopped scallions and

chives, and salt to taste. Top with olive oil and vinegar. Mix. When the temperatures climb and you can’t stand the heat, either from the weather or the above recipes, the perfect cocktail to cool you down is a margarita or a beer. Or how about combining the two with Geoffrey Zakarian’s Beergarita.

Beergarita Show: The Kitchen. Episode: Restaurant Favorites Ingredients: • 2 ounces reposado tequila, such as Don Julio • 1 ounce agave nectar • 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice, plus one lime wedge for garnish • 6 ounces Mexican beer, such as Corona or Negra Modelo

Directions: Add the tequila, agave and lime juice to a cocktail shaker with ice and shake vigorously. Add the beer, then strain into a goblet filled with ice. Garnish with a lime wedge and serve.

Types of Discounts Here’s an abbreviated rundown of some of the different travel discounts you can expect to find.

Transportation: For airline travel, Southwest has fully refundable senior fares to passengers 65 and older, and British Airways offers AARP members $65 off economy travel and $200 off business club travel.

American, United and Delta also offer senior fares in certain markets but are extremely limited.

For traveling by train, Amtrak provides a 10 percent discount to travelers 65-plus, and a 10 percent discount to passengers over age 60 on cross-border services

Hotels: Many U.S. hotels offer senior discounts (at varying ages) usually ranging between 5 and 15 percent off. For example, Marriott offers a 15 percent discount to travelers 62 and older at over 4,000 locations worldwide. And Wyndham hotel group offers 60-plus guests best available rate discounts.

Restaurants: Some restaurant chains offer senior discounts, ranging from free drinks, to senior menus, to discounts off your total order. National chains that offer these deals include Burger King, Chili’s, Chick-fil-A, Dunkin Donuts, Golden Corral, IHOP and Wendy’s.

Offers can vary by location.

Cruses: Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise lines offer discount rates to cruisers 55 and over.

Entertainment and Attractions: Most movie theaters, museums, zoos, aquariums, public golf courses and even ski slopes provide reduced admission to seniors over 60 or 65. If you’re 62-plus, you’re also eligible for the “Senior Pass,” which provides a lifetime entry to 2,000 national parks and recreation sites. You can obtain this pass in person at one of the federal recreation sites for $80, or online for $90 at Store.usgs.gov/ senior-pass.

What Is Biting Me?

I

occasionally get calls from people who are getting bitten by something in their yard. New Mexico doesn’t have chiggers that bite people, so I was perplexed until someone brought me some mites to identify. The mites don’t have a good common name, though a few folks back East call them “concrete” mites, and they are probably found throughout the country. At least now we know they are found in New Mexico.

These mites feed mainly on pollen, so when we have moderate or high pollen counts, they come out in large numbers. You can see them running around on sidewalks and patios feeding on pollen.

They will be found on all surfaces where pollen lands, including lawns.

These mites also bite, may cause a rash and have a natural resistance to pesticides.

In fact, there are no pesticides labeled for use against these mites as they haven’t found one that works. The good news is that you can kill these mites with homemade remedies. If you are getting bitten outside, I would recommend hosing off all sidewalks and patios to wash any mites back into the yard. If you have to work in the yard, you can spray it with a mixture of four tablespoons of buttermilk, a cup of all-purpose flour and a gallon of water. Spray any area you need to work in. The mixture will suffocate any mites it comes in contact with. You can also dust any areas of the yard with food grade diatomaceous earth, which can be obtained at a feed store.

Pesticides are useless in dealing with these mites and potentially dangerous to you, your family and your pets.

Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) is looking for volunteers age 55 and older who are interested in making a difference in a child’s life. Foster Grandparent volunteers must be willing to serve an average of 20 hours per week and must be able to pass a background check, physical, and tuberculosis test.

Foster Grandparent volunteers serve one-on-one with children, working with them to build their social and emotional development as well as help improve their literacy skills. Volunteers receive mileage reimbursement, supplemental liability insurance, meals while on duty, pre-service and monthly trainings, and recognition throughout the year.

is increasing evidence that cruciferous vegetables provide nutritional components that may help to prevent cancers of the breast, colon, liver, lung and stomach.

The American Association for Cancer Research found that there are consistent associations between cruciferous consumption and a decrease in cancer.

Specifically, the sulfur compound isothiocyanate has been shown to help prevent cancer and establish the healthy gut microbiome environment needed for healthy digestion. However, there may be a “plateau in potential chemopreventive benefit,” it said. So, while it’s beneficial to get some cruciferous vegetables on your plate daily, going overboard may not result in more significant benefit.

In 2017, the Journal of Molecular Nutrition & Food Research noted that “increased consumption of Brassica vegetables was linked to a reduced relative abundance of sulphate-reducing bacteria, and ... potentially beneficial to gastrointestinal health.”

The Journal of Nutrition published a study in 2009 that found compounds in cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower positively alter gut bacteria and “influence (the) metabolism of bioactive food components.” Gut bacteria are a profoundly important aspect of health through digestion and the metabolism of nutrients from food.

To increase your daily intake, perhaps begin with ‘pre-made’ pizza crusts and ‘riced cauliflower’ (available in the frozen food section of your natural grocer). Add other vegetables to make a bowl of stirfried veggies. The Indian spice ‘garam masala’ pairs wonderfully with florets of steamed cauliflower or added to cauliflower rice. (Combine with cooked root vegetables like sweet potato, beets, onion, carrots, and even free-range chicken or grassfed beef for a savory grain-free dish.)

Easier-Than-Rice Cauliflower Rice Use a food processor or cheese grater to turn cauliflower (florets only) into what looks like rice.

Sauté (medium-high heat) raw cauliflower, continually stirring, with olive oil, salt and pepper about three minutes to desired taste and consistency. *fFo extra pizazz add garam masala.

Easier-Than-Dough Cauli-Flour Crust • 4 cups of cauliflower rice (florets only) (use a cheese grater or food processor) • 1-cup Parmesan cheese, grated • 1 large egg • Season if desired Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Sauté riced cauliflower over medium-high heat, continuously stirring for about 10 minutes. When most of the moisture is cooked out, add Parmesan cheese (and spices if you choose). Stir until blended and remove from heat. Cool for a few minutes, and quickly stir in egg so that it does not cook. Drop ‘cauli-flour’ mix onto parchment paper pan and flatten by hand in a dough-like fashion to about ½-inch thick, leaving a slightly larger edge for holding. Bake about 20 minutes and cool before adding your favorite toppings. This crust is perfect for summertime fun, so play with it as a base for your quiches, potpies and savory tarts.

ver the last few months I’ve warned of the dangers of excessive sun exposure. This month I’d like to highlight some of the benefits of limited sun exposure.

Let’s start with the production of vitamin D. The most natural way to get vitamin D is by exposing your bare skin to sunlight (ultraviolet B rays).

This can happen very quickly, particularly in the summer. You don’t need to tan or burn your skin to get vitamin D. You only need to expose your skin for around half the time it takes for your skin to begin to burn.

How much vitamin D is produced from sunlight depends on the time of day, where you live in the world and the color of your skin. The more skin you expose, the more vitamin D is produced.

How can you tell if the sun and your skin are interacting in a productive manner so that vitamin D is made? UVB light is the only type of light that can stimulate vitamin D production, but it is often blocked by our atmosphere and may never reach our skin. Ozone, pollution, glass, clothing and sunscreen block UVB’s ability to reach our skin surface and thus prevent vitamin D production. (UVA light, the “aging rays,” pass through the atmosphere easily and can harm us even on cloudy or wintry days.)

To optimize vitamin D production, the sun must be at an angle of approximately 50 degrees or greater above the horizon (90 percent would be directly overhead). The closer to overhead the sun is, the greater its potential for stimulating vitamin D production (and the less time you have to be in the sun to produce a given amount of it).

It has been estimated that just 15 minutes of sun in the middle

of the day in the summer, only a few times per week, can be sufficient for you to produce your complete vitamin D needs. This is true for people with fair skin in ideal conditions; darker-skinned individuals may need longer exposure time.

A couple of warnings are necessary. UVB can also damage your skin, and if you over expose yourself, vitamin D production can actually stop.

It also doesn’t matter what part of your skin is producing your vitamin D. It therefore is recommended that you expose the large areas of your body that don’t normally get very much sun, and cover the parts that are often in the sun (such as hands and wrists, face, neck and shoulders) to protect them. In this way, you can maximize your vitamin D production without further damaging the sensitive areas of your skin that are already most likely over-exposed. You (continued on next page)

What is all this excitement about vitamin D, anyway?

We all think of vitamin D as the “bone health” vitamin.

While it is true that adequate stores of it assist in the absorption of calcium, it is also responsible for enhancement of muscle contraction. Thus, vitamin D is vitally important in the prevention of falls and has been shown to do so in older individuals.

In addition, there are some studies linking vitamin D deficiency to Parkinson’s disease and depression.

Too little vitamin D in children can result in a condition called Ricketts. Inadequate vitamin D in adults can lead to osteomalacia (soft bone) as a result of bone demineralization.

Vitamin D also plays a role in the immune system. The immune system is your body’s defense system, protecting it against infections and other illnesses.

New studies are suggesting Vitamin D might play a role in cancer prevention specifically

colon, prostate and breast cancers.
