re-registration is taking place for the 39th annual New Mexico Conference on Aging, which is scheduled for August 15–16, 2017 at the Conference Center at the Isleta Resort and Casino in Albuquerque.

The event, sponsored by the NM Aging and Long-Term Services Department, provides older adults, caregivers and professionals who work with them an opportunity to learn and have fun in an environment that supports independence and dignity. Approximately 1,500 individuals are expected to attend the Conference, which features more than 40 workshops, 60 interactive exhibits and a health and enrichment fair. The conference theme is Supporting Active Aging Today— Tomorrow—Beyond.

The conference features two general sessions: • On Tuesday, August 15th, the keynote speaker is sponsored by AARP New Mexico. Lisa Marsh Ryerson is president of AARP Foundation, AARP’s affiliated charity. At the helm since the fall of 2013, she sets the Foundation’s strategic direction to create and advance effective solutions to help vulnerable older adults meet their basic needs. Ms. Ryerson holds a Bachelor of Arts from Wells College and a Master of Science from the State University of New York College at Cortland. Lauded for her leadership, she has received numerous awards and honors, including an honorary degree from Southern New Hampshire University in 2015 and an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the State University of New York at Albany for having “met and exceeded each of John Quincy Adams ‘standards for leadership.”

The 12th Annual New Mexico Jazz Festival features internationally renowned jazz artists, as well as some of New Mexico’s own, NEA Jazz Masters, and more at multiple indoor and outdoor stages. The Festival this year has new partnerships, free concerts, visual arts exhibitions, films and ticketed concerts. The Route 66 Summerfest in Nob Hill is now part of the Festival, and has as its headliner, the band Los Lobos.

Dumped In The Desert: The Bisbee Deportation Of 1917

T

his month marks the 100th anniversary of one of the more shameful events in the history of the American labor movement, when some 1200 striking copper miners in Bisbee, Arizona, were rounded up, herded onto railroad cars, and dumped off in the desert south of Deming. Although the story didn’t begin in New Mexico, it ended here, so it merits our attention in this space.

The early years of the 20th century were turbulent ones in the hard-rock mining industry in the American West. Copper miners from Montana to Arizona were demanding shorter hours, higher wages and safer working conditions. Strikes often turned violent when mine owners brought in strike breakers and hired gunmen to intimidate the striking miners.

Bisbee’s miners were represented by two competing unions: the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers, affiliated with the American Federation of Labor (AFL), and the more radical Metal Mine Workers Union, allied with the Industrial Workers of the

World, or IWW, popularly known as the Wobblies.

Organized in 1905, the IWW championed not only the customary goals of American labor unions, but the eventual takeover of industries by the workers themselves. Needless to say, mine owners and other capitalists viewed the Wobblies with considerable alarm. With the entry of the United States into the First World War in April of 1917, that alarm escalated to near-hysteria. The Wobblies denounced the conflict as a “Bosses’ War,” and they in turn were accused of a litany of real and imagined offences, including disloyalty, espionage, sabotage and sedition. Around the nation, IWW members were attacked and beaten by mobs. A few of their leaders were lynched.

Wartime production caused copper prices to soar, but wages lagged behind. Moreover, foreign-born workers, including many Mexican nationals, were paid less than US citizens, a practice the IWW opposed.

Consequently, on June 28, the Bisbee miners walked out. Both unions supported the strike. Talks with the

mine owners, including Phelps-Dodge, the largest company in the area, went nowhere, and the strike continued.

On the evening of July 11 the mine owners and local officials held a secret meeting at which nearly 2000 of their supporters were deputized

by Sheriff Harry Wheeler. Before dawn the following morning they fanned out across the town and began arresting all known strikers, along with anyone suspected of being in sympathy with them. Telephone and telegraph offices were shut down to prevent any communication with the outside world, and vigilantes guarded the roads. The detainees were marched three miles to a baseball park in the nearby community of Warren. There they were given the opportunity to renounce the strike and return home.

Some did, but most refused. Just before noon they were loaded aboard 24 boxcars and cattle cars of the El Paso & Southwestern Railroad. Armed deputies rode on top of the cars.

of bread and water provided for the prisoners was soon gone. Thirst began to claw at them.

Their destination was the border town of Columbus, NM, where Sheriff Wheeler planned to turn his prisoners over to the Army at Camp Furlong, just outside the town. The post commander, however, refused to accept them, citing the camp’s lack of resources to feed and house so many men. Perhaps he also was reluctant to become involved in an operation of such questionable legality.

So the train backtracked 23 miles to the tiny whistle-stop of Hermanas, where the strikers were finally released. There they were left to fend for themselves, with only the clothes on their backs and little or no money. Some had not eaten in over 24 hours. Fortunately, a relief truck from Columbus soon arrived, bringing food and supplies.

Two days later the Army relented and agreed to house the deportees at Camp Furlong, where some remained for more than two months. They were free to leave, but many had nowhere to go.

As it turned out, the deported miners bore little resemblance to the

bomb-throwing Bolsheviks of Sheriff Wheeler’s imagination. Of the 1186 men who were enrolled at Camp Furlong, nearly half were native-born Americans and many of the others were naturalized citizens. Most had registered for the draft, as required by law, and many had purchased war bonds. About one-third were married men with families. Many of those families, left behind in Bisbee, were forced to sell their homes at a loss because their breadwinners had been permanently blacklisted by the mining companies.

It appears that the strikers were treated with much more civility in Columbus than they had been in Arizona. Just a day after they were dumped off at Hermanas, one newspaper, the Columbus Courier, ran a front-page editorial condemning the deportation as “a crime which will always remain as a blot on the name of that state,” and called for a federal investigation.

Eventually there were investigations, by both the federal government and the State of Arizona, and 245 indictments were handed down. The list included prominent civic leaders, public officials and businessmen.

None were convicted.

Quivira Los Cabos – Challenging Golf, Breathtaking Views

“

Have you ever walked the golf course?” I asked Quivira Golf Club Los Cabos’ director of golf Antonio Reynante.

“My assistants and I tried it once, but we couldn’t get past Number 6,” the fit-looking 35-year-old former mini-tour player told me. “We had to call the shop to come out and take us back in golf carts.”

It wasn’t an indictment of his staff’s physical conditioning so much as a testament to architect Jack Nicklaus’ ability to design a golf course in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, that starts at 30 feet above sea level and climbs to nearly 400.

“I thought it was a very challenging yet spectacular piece of property,” Nicklaus said when the course opened in 2014.

“I hope most people will think it’s the most spectacular golf course and the best golf course they have ever seen. And yes, some other people will say, “You have got to be kidding.”

That’s an honest appraisal. A cynic might say that Quivira is just a clown’s mouth or windmill away from goofy golf, but in my mind Nicklaus cast aside his usual highly engineered approach; instead, he let Quivira’s landscape dictate an appealing compromise between playability for the vacationing player, visual impact and sustainability.

The result is a track that Golf magazine named “Best New International Course” in 2014.

In 2016, Golf Digest gave it the magazine’s Editor’s Choice award for best golf resort in Mexico or Central America.

The Challenge Part of The Golden Bear’s solution to the challenging elevation changes at Quivira is the longest cart path I

have ever ridden – 1,500 meters, or just shy of a mile – switch-backing its way 250 vertical feet along the flank of a massive dune-topped granite ridge rising above the ocean.

The ride is both exhilarating and relaxing, much like the first long ascent on an amusement park roller coaster. As you climb between Nos. 4 and 5, the views of the receding golf shop, beach and the occasional humpback whale breaching well beyond the surf break are reasons enough to pat yourself on the back for choosing Cabo.

Cresting the last switchback to the No. 5 tee box brings a truly vertigoinducing view – the kind that snaps your senses to full alert, makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, and announces in no uncertain terms that, yes, your golf vacation has finally begun.

To the front: a narrow ribbon of grass leading to an unseen green dangling some 100 feet below the layup spot in the fairway. The putting surface itself is perched 125 feet

above the surf.

It’s not often I’m thankful to see a “Cart paths only this hole” sign, but this was one of those times. The thought of our cart launching us a la “Thelma and Louise” into the ocean fleetingly crossed my mind.

The Par 3 6th is no less spectacular. I’ll let the course description do the talking: “The tee shot must find and hold a long narrow green that drops off to a cavernous bunker and oblivion on the left.”

“Oblivion” would be the Pacific.

From the back tee box, the putting surface is but a speck of green 180 yards away, sky blue above, ocean blue to the left, granite brown to the right.

Multiple Personalities Once the course turns inland, the rest of Quivira’s holes range in personality from those you’d find on the sandy links courses of Scotland to those you’d find in Scottsdale, Ariz., or tucked in the folds of the hills and ravines of Northern California. What causes Alzheimer’s disease?

In Alzheimer’s disease, there is progressive loss of both brain cells and the interconnections between them. It is not fully understood why that occurs. Abnormal proteins accumulate in the brain and cause plaques and tangles within and around brain cells. The loss of brain cells and their interconnections causes the brain to shrink over time, resulting in progressive loss of memory and the ability to think.

What are the risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease?

Risk factors include family history, female gender, smoking, being overweight, poor diet with high fat foods, lack of exercise, social isolation, lower education level, and older age, although it is important to note that Alzheimer’s is not a normal condition of aging.

Diseases that adversely affect blood vessels or the heart, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and stroke, may also increase risk.

I had heard that exposure to aluminum is thought to be a risk for Alzheimer’s. Is that correct?

No. This theory was widespread in the 1970s and earlier, but subsequent research and current scientific information do not support a role for aluminum in the development of the disease.

Is there any treatment for Alzheimer’s?

Currently, there is no specific treatment for the disease that will stop or reverse the loss of brain cells and their interconnections.

There are non-medication and medication approaches to treat various symptoms of the disease.

Medicines are available that may improve memory and cognitive ability. Other symptoms include mood changes, behavior issues and disruption in sleep patterns.

Each person’s situation will be different, and treatment must be tailored to an individual’s specific circumstances. Ideally, a person diagnosed with Alzheimer’s will have a physician and dedicated care team to help develop and implement the best treatment plan.

What else should I know about Alzheimer’s disease?

Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the country and is the fifth leading cause of death in people 65 and older.

What should I do if I am diagnosed, or if a loved one is diagnosed, with Alzheimer’s?

It is important to work with your doctor and care team to understand the disease and learn what to expect over time. There are many resources available as well as support groups to help you and your family adjust to living with Alzheimer’s. The Alzheimer’s Association is a good resource that can provide additional information.

New Mexico Gunfighters Association, where she said she learned what it feels like going “toe to toe with a revolverwielding sheriff.”

In “She Was Sheriff,” Groves did extensive research on women in the frontier days. She said she decided to make her latest book historical fiction because she wanted to set the book in a time when the Wild West was

changing. People were traveling by train, the telegraph was opening up communications, and yet there was still a lot of lawlessness.

“I do tons of research for all my novels and that era was fascinating in that the world was changing so quickly,” Groves said. “It was a time of a relatively transient society full of various characters and in many instances, very little law.”

And that makes for a great

western novel. Groves said she wanted the book to be a lighthearted look at what was hard living, especially for women. The lead character gets the sheriff’s job nobody in town wanted and then made it her own.

“I’m happy to be in the western genre,” Groves said. “It’s where my heart has always been and I suspect will always be.”

Unlocking The H2O Mystery: What’s In Your Water?

ater is big business these days. That might sound foolish to many of us who can remember when tap water was all we needed to quench our thirst. Now people go to great lengths to get water that is purified, distilled, deionized, ionized or filtered. But is there

really a big difference between high maintenance H2O and right out of the tap?

Some local bottled water customers seem to think so. On any given day, especially Saturdays, people line up with their gallonsized – or larger – containers and wait their turn for them to be filled for the week at various stores or dispensers inside or outside of grocery stores and strip malls.

“We come here once a week,” said Stephen Locke of Albuquerque, while standing in line at a local water store. “My wife likes the alkaline (ionized) water because she said it balances the pH (acidity) in her body. I like it because it makes great coffee, so I come out here and wait in line.”

Whatever the reason, people are flocking to purchase what they hope is a higher quality water.

“My customers say they want better water, period,” said Joseph Tenorio, co-owner of Water to Go in Albuquerque. He and his wife, Lillian Tenorio, learned a lot about water as they

were preparing for get their business started.

“We learned that higher purity water is not just a gimmick,” Joseph Tenorio said. “To be called purified water, impurities must be removed or reduced to extremely low levels. Purified water is of higher quality than bottled spring water, tap water or filtered water.”

According to Jeff Vinyard, owner of Crystal Springs Bottled Water in Albuquerque, purified water represents the fastest growing segment of the bottled water industry.

“Many people buy their water because they want higher quality water,” Vinyard said. (continued on next page)

“But a lot of it is the convenience of getting high quality water delivered. … Our customers pay for their water because of its quality and convenience.”

Tenorio said his parent company offers customers several informational brochures about the different types of water and how they are purified.

Purified water is not filtered water, Tenorio said. It is distilled, however. There is filtration involved, but purified water is put through a distillation system that results in purification. The process makes it a higher purity than spring, tap or filtered water, he said.

“I know people who will not drink anything other than distilled water,” he said. “Other people believe that alkaline water has health benefits, so they want that. Taste wise, there isn’t much difference.”

What’s been written is that alkaline water is ionized to increase the potential of hydrogen (pH).

Some water experts say this water is good for those who want to

naturally get their bodies back to a balanced pH level.

Distilled water is created by boiling pure H2O out of contaminants, usually inorganic minerals and metals. The pure water turns into steam and is captured and cooled, becoming distilled water. This requires technology, which most water stores have installed to keep the water flowing to its customers.

The back room of the Water Store, is a bit like that of a chemistry laboratory, or for a better visual, a lot like a brewery.

In addition to getting higher quality water, Tenorio and Vinyard agree that the time has come for more people to stop buying those plastic bottled waters. The plastics are not designed for extreme temperatures, and they end up in landfills, doing harm to the environment.

“We know people may look at our water and ask why they should pay for something that is natural,” Vinyard said. “The answer is that if you care about the quality of water that you put in your bodies and in your families’ bodies, it is worth it.”

New Medicare Cards Debut Next Year

D

ear Savvy Senior, I just received my Medicare card in the mail and was surprised to see that the ID number is the same as my Social Security number.

I know it’s a bad idea to carry around anything that displays my Social Security number because it

makes me vulnerable to identity theft. Wasn’t the government supposed to stop putting Social Security numbers on Medicare cards?

New Beneficiary Dear New, Many people new to Medicare are surprised to learn that the ID number on their Medicare card is still identical to their Social Security number. After all, we’re constantly warned not to carry our SSN around with us because if it gets lost or stolen, the result could be identity theft.

But the card itself tells beneficiaries to carry it with you when you are away from home so you can show it at the doctor’s office or hospital when you need medical care. Here’s what you should do to protect yourself.

New Medicare Cards For starters, you’ll be happy to know that the government is in the process of removing SSNs from Medicare cards, but with 58 million beneficiaries, it’s a huge undertaking that will be implemented gradually.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will start sending the new cards in April 2018, but it will take until December 2019 before SSNs are removed from all cards.

Under the new system, a randomly generated 11-character Medicare Beneficiary Identifier will replace the SSN-based health claim number on your new Medicare card, but your Medicare benefits will not change.

You will receive information in 2018 letting you know about the new Medicare card, with an explanation of how to use the new card and what to do with your old one. You can start using your new Medicare card with the new number as soon as you receive it, and there should be a transition period in 2018 and 2019 when you can use either the old card or the new card.

Protect Your Identity Until your new Medicare card is issued, here’s what you can do to protect your SSN on your current card. The Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, a national consumer resource on identity theft, recommends that you carry your Medicare card only when you visit a health care provider for the first time, so the provider can make a copy for their files. Otherwise, make a photocopy of your card and cut it down to wallet size.

Then take a black marker and black out the last four digits of your SSN, and carry that instead in case of an emergency.

If your Medicare card does happen to get lost or stolen, you can replace it by calling Social Security at 800-772-1213 or contact your local Social Security office. You can also request a card online at SSA.gov/MyAccount.

Your card will arrive in the mail in about 30 days.

If your Medicare card that contains your SSN gets lost or stolen, you’ll need to watch out for Medicare fraud. You can do this by checking your quarterly Medicare summary notices for services or supplies you did not receive. You can also check your Medicare claims early online at MyMedicare.gov (you’ll need to create an account first), or by calling Medicare at 800-633-4227.

If you spot anything suspicious or wrong, call the Inspector General’s fraud hotline at 800-447-8477.

Also, watch for other signs of identity theft. For example, if someone uses your Social Security number to obtain credit, loans, telephone accounts, or other goods and services, report it immediately to the Federal Trade Commission at IdentityTheft.gov (or 877-4384338). This site will also give you specific steps you’ll need to take to handle this problem.

Santa Fe Spotlight World Unites At 14th Annual International Folk Art Market

he world’s largest folk art market is marking its 14th year in Santa Fe by featuring more than 150 master artists from 54 countries.

In 2015, the Folk Art Market was voted “Best Art Festival” in USA Today’s Readers’ Choice poll. This year’s event is July 14-16 on Museum Hill in Santa Fe. The allure of the market is that visitors can take in folk art from all around the world in one place. The artwork comes from indigenous regions and big cities alike. This outdoor event attracts 20,000 thousand visitors each year, according to event

organizers. Organizers said art lovers, on average, purchased $3 million in folk art each year the event has been in Santa Fe. Artists consign their work to the International Folk Art Alliance, which handles all sales. On average, nearly $20,000 per booth is sent back with artists in their native countries. More often than not, the income helps sustain entire communities. When artists return home, wells, bridges and even schools are built with the money they earn.

According to the IFAA, half of the world’s population alives on less than $2 per day, and indigenous cultures are rapidly disappearing at a rate of 30 per

year. In the process, traditional lifestyles are being threatened by larger global economic forces that all too often split communities apart, devalue hand-crafted tradition, and interrupt knowledge traditionally handed down from generation to generation. “It’s like few other places in the world because it’s the world gathered all in one place,” CBS Sunday Morning noted after visiting. our Fourth of July celebration is probably over and done, and chances are pretty good you and your family might have had a hot dog or two during the festivities. According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, in 2016, consumers spent more than $2.4 billion on hot dogs in U.S. supermarkets.

Here are a few more dog stats: • During peak hot dog season, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Americans typically consume 7 billion hot dogs. That’s 818 hot dogs consumed every second during that period.

• Los Angeles Dodger fans consumed 2.6 million hot dogs in 2016.

Across the major leagues, fans enjoyed 19.4 million hot dogs during the 2016 season.

• Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport consumes six times more hot dogs - 725,000 more - than Los Angeles International Airport and LaGuardia Airport combined.

Cook the hot dogs according to the package directions.

2. In a medium bowl, mash the avocado with the lime juice; season with ¼ teaspoon each salt and pepper.

The digestive process converts lignans to enterolignans that potentially block estrogen receptors from absorbing excess estrogen. Perhaps this digestive sequence helps reduce estrogen burdens that stimulate certain cancers.

Cucumber cucurbitacins A, B, C, D and E, are also being studied for their potential anti-cancer benefits.

Although there is no conclusive evidence that cucumbers are a direct link in these ways, it is helpful to understand how phytonutrients interact with the body at the microscopic level.

The only downside to consuming cucumbers is their reputation for pesticide residues.

The Environmental Working Group has cucumber on the “World’s Dirtiest Foods” list.

So, always wash them before consumption. Choosing organic helps to limit the pesticides and guard against wax contaminants.

uring the summer, parties, picnics, reunions and weddings abound. Good dietary habits seem to vanish from sight, and heat can take its toll before you know it. Some precautions should serve us all.

First, we must remind ourselves of some basic principles of aging.

The sensation of thirst diminishes as we age, predisposing us to drink less fluid and possibly to dehydration. Typically, the body also tends to need fewer calories as we age, but we still need key nutrients, especially when healing or suffering from certain medical conditions. Summertime dehydration remains a potential problem for seniors. Let’s look at some tasty ways to combat dehydration, continue compliance with specific diets and maintain healthy nutrition.

A variety of fresh fruits and vegetables provide nutritious alternatives to the fast food treats of drive-through restaurants. One of my favorites is watermelon.

Nothing resonates with summer like this fruit. Watermelon is low in fat, and high in potassium and lycopene, an antioxidant that has been shown to combat certain forms of cancer and heart disease. Watermelon also contains significant amounts of vitamins A, C and B6.

Another summer favorite is coleslaw. No matter how it is prepared, coleslaw is an excellent source of dietary fiber and an easy way to include a number of veggies in your diet.

Cabbage, the principle ingredient in most coleslaw recipes is rich in vitamins C and K. One can add many other nutrient-dense ingredients into your slaw: shredded carrots, red cabbage, broccoli stalks, radishes, bell peppers or jicama. Apple bits can sweeten up the slaw just a little.

Don’t forget about beans as a great source of protein. Three -bean salads are high in protein.

Another great source is eggs.

Whether you like egg salad or deviled eggs, both provide a multitude of vitamins, including

vitamins A, D, E, B6 and B12.

Celery, cucumbers, lettuces and grapes also carry high fluid content and can help prevent dehydration. Fresh strawberries, blueberries, a handful of baby spinach and a little bit of ice with a slice of lime can create a quick, invigorating smoothie. This is not only tasty but also healthy.

Use your imagination and create some healthy cool treats that will keep you hydrated. Always ask your primary care provider if there are any foods that you must avoid. Be mindful of the caloric content of all these foods. Have a safe summer.

I

got a message from a reader about a pest control company who told her it uses safe pesticides, when in fact, the pesticide it uses is Talstar, a synthetic and unsafe pyrethroid.

Almost all pest control companies use synthetic pyrethroid pesticides now (CyKick, Tempo, Talstar, Bifen, Demand and many others). These pesticides are not as toxic as the pesticides they used to use. The organophosphates, the carbates and chlorinated hydrocarbons were much more toxic.

However, you can control the vast majority of pests in your home or business without using any pesticides or an exterminator.

There are a few exceptions. If

Control Most Pests Yourself you have termites in your home or swarms of yellowjackets or bumblebees or other stinging insect swarms, then you need to hire an exterminator. For almost all other pests, you can do it yourself as I have said many times in my columns.

Here are some pest tips.

German roaches: German roaches are small, light colored roaches that infest kitchens and are very prolific. You can bring them home from a grocery store, so check bags. If you have these roaches, get some German roach pheromone traps and put them in areas of the kitchen, including in cabinets, on counters and other areas you see them. The traps will attract and catch the roaches.

Pesticides aren’t necessary.

Clothes moths and flour moths: Both of these moths are common pests. You can also use pheromone traps to catch the male moths and stop the breeding process. Use clothes moth pheromone traps for clothes moths and flour moth pheromone traps for the moths infesting the kitchen. Wash and

clean all wool and cotton fabric to kill the clothes moth larvae, and clean out the pantry and throw away any infested food for flour moths.

Scorpions: If you have scorpions around your house, put some damp, heavy denim type material in the yard.

The scorpions will find these at night and hide under them. Then you can dispose of the denim and any scorpions in them the next day.

A note on pesticide notification: Many states require that notification be posted before pesticides are applied to public buildings so as to make people aware of potential exposure. It has long been said that only the legislature can require pesticide notification. That is not true. In the original NM Pest Control Act, the New Mexico Department of Agriculture could authorize it.

A letter from the NMDA division director in in response to my inquiry said: “NMDA does have authority to pass a regulation relating to pesticide notification on public property. As a public agency,

NMDA’s regulations must be based on the needs of the public and industry, and when regulatory changes are contemplated we must consider input from all affected parties. We have received very few requests for notification requirements to be placed into rule, though I have noted your support.”

The reason the department has received so few requests is because most people are unaware that the NMDA regulates pesticides in New Mexico. I probably get more complaints about the pest control industry then it does. If you agree that pesticide notification should be required before pesticides are applied, call the NMDA at 575-646-2733. Notification should be posted 48 hours before the application and the notice should identify the target pest, the name of the pesticide and the Environmental Protection Agency number of the pesticide, as well as the name and license number of the applicator.
