Set For Sandia Resort – Governor Lujan Grisham to Speak

T

he 2019 New Mexico Conference on Aging promises to be one of the most exciting and expansive events in its long history. Over 1,500 older New Mexicans, aging and healthcare professionals, and other members of the public are expected to attend the 41st edition of the annual gathering organized by the State of New Mexico’s Aging and Long-Term Services Department.

Set for August 13-14 at the Sandia Resort & Casino in Albuquerque, the conference will kick off with an address by New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham the morning of Tuesday, August 13.

Addressing the theme “Facing the Future of Aging Together,” the 2019 Conference on Aging will feature over 60 presentations and panel discussions from locally and nationally recognized speakers, exploring the latest research and best practices in aging and related topics.

“At this year’s conference, we are excited to introduce a new Benefits and Services Hall where participants can meet one-on-one with key service providers,” said conference coordinator Evone Gallegos of the Aging and Long Term Services Department. “We will also have the popular classic car show, live entertainment and music, a dance and reception on Tuesday night, and amazing speakers and workshops all day Tuesday and Wednesday.”

Keynote speakers include David Scrase, Cabinet Secretary of the New Mexico Human Services Department, and Gil Penalosa, Ambassador of World Urban Parks and an international expert on cities and healthy living. The conference’s Health and Enrichment fair will feature exhibitors and providers of everything from acupuncture to dentistry, and outdoor recreation to volunteer opportunities in New Mexico.

With the introduction of the Benefits and Services Hall this year, the Aging and Long-Term Services Department is working hard to help New Mexicans access the wide range of services available. Registered attendees can make appointments on-site for consultations on Medicare and Medicaid; SNAP (Supplemental

Nutrition Assistance Program), CSFP (Commodity Supplemental Food Program), and TEFAP (The Emergency Food Assistance Program); veteran’s services, legal services, Alzheimer’s and dementiarelated disease care, and much more.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are available for social workers; the conference also attracts professionals, students, and others in the medical, nursing, legal, and senior services fields. Advance registration is required to attend.

“All are welcome to register,” emphasized Evone Gallegos.

“However old you are, everyone has parents, grandparents, kids, or grandchildren – the topics, presenters, entertainment, and exhibitors offer something for everyone.”

“It’s always a fantastic event,” said Evone, “and this year will be extra special. We’ll have the Governor’s speech, the new Benefits and Services Hall – and it’s a great chance to meet New Mexico’s new Cabinet Secretary for Aging and Long-Term Services, Alice Liu McCoy.” “Plus, this year we are at Sandia Resort between downtown Albuquerque and Santa Fe. It’s just off the freeway near the Rail Runner – making it easy to come and learn, to meet new people and see old friends, and to enjoy the beautiful, relaxing environment and views.”

The pre-conference classic car show on Monday night will be held on the top floor of Sandia’s parking garage, and is free and open to the general public.

The Conference on Aging is the signature annual conference organized by the Aging and LongTerm Services Department. Since its inception 41 years ago, the event has grown to become the key gathering for discussion, networking, partnerships, and learning about aging in New Mexico.

Southern NM Staycations

I

n the June issue of Prime Time, we featured opportunities for staycations - vacations close to home - in Northern New Mexico.

Here are some ideas for unique destinations to explore within a few hours of Albuquerque in the southern part of the state this month.

Ruidoso/Alto/Lincoln: Located approximately three hours from Albuquerque in the Lincoln National Forest, Ruidoso and its surrounding communities offer a rich variety of cultural and outdoor experiences.

Over the July 4th holiday weekend, the Mescalero Apache Ceremonial Dances and Rodeo takes place on the Mescalero Indian Reservation, where guests are afforded the rare opportunity to experience the coming of age ceremony of Apache maidens. A parade, ceremonial dances, rodeo, and arts and crafts fair are also slated for the festivities.

On the same weekend, the 24th annual Lincoln County Art Loop is planned for art studios throughout Lincoln County. Artists will give studio tours with art demonstrations

during the market, discussing their crafts and creative processes with visitors.

In the nearby town of Lincoln, a wild-west, history-lovers delight, walk through the same streets that Billy the Kid and Sheriff Pat Garrett roamed in the late 19th century. Meander through restored historical buildings and sites, including the infamous Lincoln County Courthouse, as well as homes and businesses of the town’s former citizens.

A short drive from Lincoln on the Billy the Kid Byway is Fort Stanton, a 240-acre, preserved military fort best known for its roles in the Indian Wars and the Civil War. “Fort Stanton LIVE” brings reenactors of both wars to the site for demonstrations, live music, and a military ball July 13, which will have guests waltzing into the evening. Join historians, photographers, artists, authors and vendors, including local food merchants.

The final weekend in July is the 48th annual Ruidoso Art & Wine Festival, hosted at the Ruidoso Convention Center. This juried fine arts show features more than

100 artists from around the nation exhibiting collectible art and jewelry, with New Mexico wineries serving tastings.

A must-see for theater lovers and concert goers is the Spencer Theater for the Performing Arts, just north of Ruidoso in the small town of Alto. Catch one of the world-class shows in the $22 million structure, or just stop in to view the unique architecture of the theater in its picturesque setting.

On display inside the Spencer is the fine art of Seattle-based glass designer Dale Chihuly. It’s the largest private collection in the Southwest that’s open to public viewing. See the website or call for more information.

Of course, nature lovers will find countless opportunities for outdoor enjoyment, including hiking, fishing, camping, horseback riding and picnicking throughout the more than 400,000 acres of the Smokey Bear Ranger District. An excursion to the district wouldn’t be complete without a visit town of Capitan, burial place of the original Smokey Bear, the lone cub that was saved by a firefighter during a forest fire there in 1950.

A Battle On The Plains

O

ne of the frustrations faced by scholars attempting to reconstruct New Mexico’s colonial past is the lack of visual records. Photography did not exist, of course, and most of the artworks the colony produced were religious images. Very few scenes of contemporary life or historic events have come down to us.

A notable exception is on display through October 20 at the Albuquerque Museum. The Segesser II Hide Tapestry, as it has come to be called, is a primitive painting done on buffalo hide depicting a littleknown 18th century battle on the Great Plains.

At the time, Spain, France and England were vying with one another for control of North America.

The English occupied most of the eastern seaboard and were pushing toward the Alleghenies; France claimed eastern Canada and had established forts and trading posts in the Great Lakes region and the upper Mississippi Valley; and in the Southwest, the Spanish borderlands stretched from Texas to California.

Each nation claimed vast, vaguelydefined territories and jealously guarded them against incursions by the others.

Alarming rumors had reached Santa Fe that the French were pushing westward onto the plains, building alliances among the Indians and supplying them with firearms.

Acting on fears that they might be planning to invade New Mexico, the Spanish viceroy in Mexico City directed Gov. Antonio Valverde y Cosío to organize a reconnaissance mission onto the plains to assess the situation and possibly establish a presidio, or fort, to guard the northeastern approaches to the colony.

In June of 1720, a party of about 108 men under the command of Lt. Gov. Pedro de Villasur set out from Santa Fe. The small force included 42 soldiers from the presidio there, 60 Pueblo Indian auxiliaries under the leadership of José Naranjo of Santa Clara, and several civilians.

Among the civilians was Jean l’Archevêque, who was to serve as the party’s interpreter should any Frenchmen be encountered. As a teenager, l’Archevêque had been among the few survivors of the ill-fated LaSalle expedition that was marooned on the Texas coast in 1685. Four years later he was rescued by a Spanish exploring party and returned with them to Coahuila, Mexico. He eventually made his way to Santa Fe, where he Hispanicized

his name to Juan Archibeque, married and raised a family. The Archibeques living in New Mexico today are all his descendants.

By early August, the Villasur party had reached the Platte River in what is now eastern Nebraska. They found no French soldiers or settlers, but they had ventured farther north into the interior of the continent than any Spanish expedition had previously.

Continuing eastward, they came upon a large Pawnee village, where they received a chilly reception.

Seeing that they were outnumbered, and knowing that the Pawnee were strongly allied with the French, Villasur retreated several miles and made camp near the confluence of the Platte and Loup rivers.

Early on the morning of August 13, Pawnee and Oto warriors swooped down on the camp, stampeding the horses and attacking from all sides. On the hide painting of the battle, 37 uniformed French soldiers are shown fighting alongside the Indians, although most historians doubt that any French troops were actually present. Survivors’ accounts don’t mention them.

Whoever did the fighting, the New Mexicans clearly got the worst of it. Forty-five men died, including l’Archevêque, Naranjo and Villasur.

the expedition’s chaplain, who is shown in the painting holding his blue Franciscan habit above his knees as he rushes into the battle to administer the last rites to the dying.

But the New Mexicans fought back hard, inflicting enough casualties on their attackers that they withdrew, allowing the survivors to escape.

They limped back into Santa Fe a month later.

A court of inquiry subsequently found Gov. Valverde guilty of negligence for placing Villasur, who had little military experience, in command of the expedition instead of leading it himself, as he had been instructed. But he received only a small fine.

The provenance of the tapestry depicting the battle is obscure, but it is believed to have been painted a few years after the fight took place by an unknown artist, possibly in Santa Fe. It is part of the exhibit “A Past Rediscovered: Highlights from the Palace of the Governors,” along with many other items on loan from the Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe. Happy Trails - Walking For The Joy Of It

ade in the Shade A walk in the sunshine is pleasant during the cooler months, but when summertime temperatures rise into the 90s and above, we denizens of the desert instinctively scurry into the shade.

Fortunately, we have a green ribbon of overhang running right through the heart of Albuquerque.

Our cottonwood Bosque (that’s Spanish for “woodland,” in case you’re a newcomer here) offers miles of trails paralleling the Rio Grande from Corrales to the South Valley, with numerous access points on both sides of the river. It’s a great place for a stroll on a summer morning.

If you’re just getting acquainted with the Bosque trail system, a good place to start would be the Open Space Visitor Center, 6500 Coors Blvd. NW, between Montaño and Paseo del Norte (open 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Tuesday

through Sunday, closed Mondays and major holidays). There you can pick up a free map and other information, learn a little about the natural history of the Bosque, and speak with friendly staffers who can answer questions you might have. A trail from the visitor center leads to the river, where it connects with other trails running north and south through the Bosque.

On the east side of the river you can find similar amenities at the Rio Grande Nature Center. To get there, head west on Candelaria Road from Rio Grande Boulevard. The street ends at the Nature Center. It’s open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. There’s a $3 charge for parking, so if you’re a frequent visitor it pays to become a member of the Friends of the Rio Grande Nature Center ($15 a year for seniors 62+).

In addition to trail access, both locations offer conveniences like restrooms, drinking fountains and reasonably safe parking areas. But be aware that lot closing times are strict. If you haven’t returned from your walk by 5 p.m., your car will be locked in the parking lot, or possibly towed, and you’ll be fined. So keep an eye on the time if you’re walking in the afternoon.

diamonds. Enjoy an ice cream taco at Pop Fizz on the NHCC campus after your walk.

• Tingley Beach, south of Central Avenue on Tingley Drive.

From here you can easily walk to two undeveloped ponds in the Bosque (not the ones next to the parking lot) where you can view a variety of waterfowl and shore birds in their natural habitat.

• Pueblo Montaño Trailhead.

That’s the little park with all the cool chainsaw sculptures south of Montaño Road, just west of the river, next to Bosque School.

For an area so close to the hectic Coors corridor, this section of the Bosque is surprisingly serene.

Walk 200 yards north or south of the Montaño Bridge and the woods close in on you, blocking out the visual clutter of the modern world as well as most of the noise. Look for owls and Cooper’s hawks, and porcupines snoozing in the treetops.

• Alameda/Rio Grande Open Space, on the south side of Alameda Boulevard, just west of Rio Grande Boulevard. Stroll to the river and you’ll see the inflatable diversion dam that shunts water from the San JuanChama Project, via the Rio Grande, into the Albuquerque/ Bernalillo County drinking water system. That massive building that looks like an adobe church is where the water is filtered and clarified before being pumped up the hill for further treatment.

To reach the trails on the west side of the river, walk across the historic Old Alameda Bridge, now closed to vehicular traffic, and note the padlocks that festoon the wire mesh below the guardrail on the upstream side. One can only assume they are love locks, a popular custom worldwide for lovers to display their everlasting affection on fencing.

There are lots of other routes into the Bosque, but you’ll have to discover them on your own.

That’s part of the fun. Enjoy your summer.

A

ll our senses are precious, but possibly our most precious sense is sight. Unfortunately, about 41 million Americans are affected by eye conditions such as cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, dry eye, and others. In this month’s article, I will focus on macular degeneration.

What is macular degeneration?

Macular degeneration is a disease characterized by deterioration of the central part of the retina, which lines the back of the eye. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss and affects over 10 million Americans — more than those affected by glaucoma and cataracts combined.

What are the symptoms of macular degeneration?

In the early course of the disease, vision is not affected. As the disease progresses, people experience blurred vision in the center of the visual field

of the affected eye. Vision may also be perceived as dark or wavy, and the ability to distinguish colors and fine detail diminishes. Objects in the center of your field of view, such as people you are talking to or words that you are reading, will appear less clear than normal.

I have heard there are two types of macular degeneration. What are they?

The two types are dry (atrophic) and wet (exudative) macular degeneration.

The majority of cases (85% to 90%) are dry macular degeneration. Although dry macular degeneration usually affects both eyes, one eye may compensate for decreased vision in the other eye during the early stages of the disease.

Usually, visual changes occur slowly and progress over years.

There are three stages of macular degeneration: early, intermediate and late. In the early stage, there may be little or no change in vision. Regular eye exams are the only way to identify cases in the early stage. As the disease progresses, some vision loss may occur but may still not be noticed by the person with the disease. Again, regular, comprehensive eye exams are important to detect changes. In late-stage macular degeneration, vision loss is noticeable.

Peripheral vision is usually normal, as the disease affects the center of the retina.

What is the cause of macular degeneration, and what are risk factors for getting it?

The cause of macular degeneration is unknown. Risk factors include age, race, gender, smoking, obesity and health conditions such as heart disease and high blood pressure. Not enough is currently known about the specific causes of macular degeneration, but the causes are complex and likely include both genetic and environmental factors.

Research continues to understand the disease better, especially what causes the cells in the macula to deteriorate.

Unfortunately, as baby boomers continue to age, the estimated number of cases of macular degeneration will only continue to increase.

What can be done to help prevent macular degeneration?

Lifestyle changes such as reaching and maintaining a healthy weight, exercising, avoiding smoking, and protecting your eyes from ultraviolet light may help to decrease your risk, especially since smoking and being overweight are known risk factors. Health conditions such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol are also risk factors; if you have those diagnoses, it is important to work with your doctor to control them.

eyes checked by an eye health professional at least every other year. If you have conditions such as diabetes or other diseases that can affect your eyes, you should be checked yearly. If you have any changes in your vision, whether sudden or gradual, you should get checked as soon as possible.

edbugs are good for one thing - the economy. If you made a list of the 100 most dangerous bugs on the planet, bed bugs would not make the list, but if you listed the most profitable bugs on the planet, bed bugs would be second from the top. More than $250 million is spent every year on

bed bug control. Termites lead as most profitable insects on the planet.

Cockroaches are up there as well.

In fact, cockroaches have created more jobs than any other bug.

Most of the pest control industry is the result of human attempts to make cockroaches extinct. But we may be glad they’re still around as they appear to have a lot to teach us. Scientists have identified nine antibiotic molecules in the brains of both cockroaches and locusts that protect them from voracious, lethal bacteria. The implications of these findings cannot be overstated.

Consider our ongoing battle with MRSA—a type of bacteria that flourishes in hospitals, locker rooms and playgrounds. When a human comes into contact with MRSA, the bacteria burrow into the skin, forming a welt. If the victim is lucky, the welt turns into a painful abscess, which can be drained. But sometimes the bacteria burrow deeper into the body, driving their way through muscles,

joints, bones and vital organs.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 20,000 associated deaths occurred in the United States in 2017 because scientists haven’t been able to develop a drug to treat this type of infection. Researchers at Britain’s University of Nottingham found that when MRSA is pitted against the antibiotics in a cockroach brain, the bacteria don’t stand a chance.

The cockroach molecules wipe out 90 percent of MRSA bacteria on contact.

And that’s not all. According to the CDC, about 60 people infected with E. coli, associated with undercooked meat and dirty water, die each year from complications because our best meds are ineffective. But when a cockroach cocktail was used on E. coli in the lab, it knocked out the bacteria. There are a lot of hurdles to overcome before cockroach brains are available in drug stores, so don’t go shopping for them yet.

Spiders, too, have a useful purpose. Without them, almost all of the crops we grow would be consumed by insects. There are more than 600 species of spiders found in agricultural areas and that are essential for organic farmers. Spiders are far better at pest control than pesticides and far less detrimental

to the environment. Spiders in your house will help control cockroaches, silverfish and other pests.

Further, spider silk may prove useful in advancing technologies.

Because it has a higher strengthto-density ratio than steel, its components could be used in such varied products as airplanes, bulletproof vests, surgical threads and prostheses. Spider venoms have been found to contain properties for development as bioinsecticides, including high potency, rapid speed of kill, lack of vertebrate toxicity, low production costs, and activity against a wide range of crop pests and disease vectors.

Of course, you shouldn’t pick up some spiders, such as the black widow, brown recluse or yellow sac spiders, but in general, spiders are our friends.

I am not saying you should welcome cockroaches, bed bugs or spiders into your home, but there is no need for mass destruction of them or any other pests. There are safe and common-sense methods of controlling them. You can contact me and I will send you information about management of your home without using toxic pesticides.

CASA (City of Albuquerque Senior Affairs) Kitchen Looking for volunteers to support a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen that prepares food for seniors in the community. Hours are anytime between 4:00a.m. – 12p.m, Monday through Friday. Participate in preparation and distribution of food. Follow proper procedures in handling of food, portion control, sanitation, nutritional requirements and safety procedures. Some food handling experience is preferable; however volunteers will be trained for areas of help where are needed.

The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) Advisory Council Needs members to join its efforts in promoting awareness and educating the community about FGP and senior issues. Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) is looking for volunteers age 55 and older who are interested in making a difference in a child’s life. Foster Grandparent volunteers must be willing to serve an average of 20 hours per week and must be able to pass a background check, physical, and tuberculosis test.

Foster Grandparent volunteers serve one-on-one with children, working with them to build their social and emotional development as well as help improve their literacy skills. Volunteers receive mileage reimbursement, supplemental liability insurance, meals while on duty, pre-service and monthly trainings, and recognition throughout the year.

Silver Horizons - Silver Helping Seniors: Every month, Silver Horizons partners with the City of Albuquerque to provide free groceries to over 3,500 seniors, and to about 1,200 grandchildren many of these seniors are raising.

All That’s Jazz

heard in a wide range of auricular flavors. Whether you enjoy the New Orleans style jazz popularized

by Louis Armstrong, Kansas City style blues jazz, big-band jazz, be-bop, cool jazz, Latin jazz or jazz fusion, there is a style just about everyone can relate to.

The most fascinating aspect of jazz performance is the communication among the musicians. When played, each instrument speaks to another and waits for a reply. The “call and response,” as well as improvisation of the melody and often a countermelody, result in memorable musical experiences.

No doubt you are wondering how this relates to health and wellbeing.

The soothing power of music is well-established. It has a unique link to our emotions and can be an extremely effective stress management tool. Music can also bring back memories of our youth, when our bodies moved as freely as the notes rising into the air.

Jazz music, whether fast or slow, can have a beneficial effect on our physiological functions. Lower blood pressure, a slower heart rate, lower levels of stress hormones and therefore mood elevation have been shown to result from listening to music.

Whether a calming jazz pianist, jazz guitarist or the big band sound of Duke Ellington, this music can affect positive changes. Singing along or tapping one’s foot can be therapeutic. Research has shown that music is beneficial to recovery and pain relief in the perioperative period. Music therapy significantly reduces emotional distress and boosts quality of life among adult cancer patients.

Hospice and palliative care organizations have utilized music therapy and volunteer musicians to ease the pain and suffering of chronically ill patients.

If wearing headphones or earbuds aren’t your thing, you can certainly enjoy live jazz music all across Albuquerque and New Mexico. There are many venues available across our state. Jazz festivals abound during the warm New Mexico summer evenings.

New Orleans may be too humid, Seattle may be too wet, New York may be too far, so why not stay close to home to hear this wonderful music. Stay calm and comfortable here in New Mexico this summer. Remember you can’t beat Jazz music!

ummer is an excellent time to review your vaccination history. Whether looking to protect your summer travel health, the health of loved ones coming to visit, or the health of your community members, you might check if your shots are up-to-date.

In some cases, people weren’t vaccinated because they were born after a vaccine was created.

In other cases, immunity formed from a previous vaccine has expired. Many vaccines require boosters. Additional doses are also recommended to protect those with low or declining immunity against preventable illnesses. As ALWAYS, it is wise to research your healthcare practitioner, the type of vaccine to be administered, and the reasons for deciding upon a vaccine. Here are a few ideas to take into consideration:

Summer Family, Summer Travel, Summer Vaccines

The pneumococcal vaccine is often recommended for smokers ages 50 and over and for those 65 and older to provide additional immunity against the pneumococcus bacteria. The problems from pneumococcal bacteria can range from blood infections to meningitis, and the bacteria is especially challenging to fight for those with declining immunity. A pneumococcal booster is recommended every five years over age 65.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends those 60 and over consider the shingles vaccine (herpes zoster) to prevent the painful and potentially damaging shingles blisters and rash. The virus lies dormant in the nerves and can re-emerge for anyone that contracted chicken pox as a child. The shingles vaccine isn’t a 100% prevention but rather, it reduces the risk of the dormant

virus re-emerging by half. Postherpetic neuralgia is a painful side-effect that makes the shingles vaccine worth considering. The condition is more common in men and can require opioid pain medication to cope with the nerve pain. Be sure to seek medical care immediately upon symptoms of shingles, as the virus can move to the eyes negatively affecting and permanently damaging vision.

The CDC recommends the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine for those born before 1956. The vaccine became available in 1957, and most people were given the vaccine from then forward. The vaccine is usually only necessary once in a lifetime.

Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (TdAP), a combined vaccine helps guard against three separate conditions. Pertussis, also called ‘whooping cough,’ can be deadly for newborn babies and small

children. Adults can be carriers of the disease without knowing.

Those over 65 years of age need the TdAP vaccine to protect themselves and their grandchildren from harm. Additionally important, is the tetanus booster aspect of the vaccine which needs to be updated every ten years. Any puncture wound in the skin can be vulnerable to tetanus bacteria, so those that enjoy walking barefoot or working on projects should consider the boosters.

It is wise to research necessary regional vaccines before overseas travel. Hepatitis A and hepatitis B are commonly selected prior to travel or before working in a health clinic even as a volunteer! Check with your insurance company and your healthcare practitioner to determine which shots are covered and most appropriate. Abundant blessings! Happy summer!
