New Mexico Jazz Festival Now In 13th Year

ounded in 2006, The New Mexico Jazz Festival, now in its 13th year, is a collaborative project of the Outpost Performance Space and The Lensic Performing Arts Center in Santa Fe, as well as partnerships with many other organizations. An exciting destination event, the festival features local as well as worldrenowned artists and jazz masters performing at indoor and outdoor venues in both Albuquerque and Santa Fe, and Taos including many free events. The First Park

W

hat’s the oldest City park in Albuquerque?

If you said Old Town Plaza, you might be right. Or maybe only halfright. While today’s tree-shaded plaza is officially a City park, that was not its original function when it was laid out in 1706.

As in all Spanish frontier towns, the plaza (somewhat larger then than now) served as a public gathering place, open-air market, parade ground for the local militia, and on rare occasions, the site of public executions. Surrounded by adobe-walled buildings, the plaza was a defensible space where citizens and their livestock could take refuge in times of danger. But the modern idea of public parks

as oases of greenery set aside for recreation in the midst of urban deserts hadn’t yet come into being when Albuquerque was founded.

That concept originated in Victorian England and was imported to America in the 1850s.

Within a few decades, expanses of public green space had sprouted up in cities across the country, from New York City’s Central Park (1857) to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park (1870), and everywhere in between.

Not to be outdone, the founders of New Town Albuquerque set aside acreage for a park when they platted the town site in 1880, a triangular block bounded by 8th Street, Copper Avenue and Railroad Avenue (now Central).

But there was no money to develop it, so the land sat idle for several years.

In an article published in the Albuquerque Herald in 1923, author Erna Fergusson recalled the

drive to landscape the park. It was spearheaded by a committee composed entirely of women.

They enlisted the help of school administrators, who in turn recruited students to do the work, which commenced on Arbor Day, 1885.

The weeds that covered the lot were cleared by hand. Walkways were laid out. Trees were planted, including elm, Osage orange and cottonwood seedlings transplanted from the Bosque. To keep the trees alive, the students pumped water and hauled it to the park in buckets every day after school.

Even years afterward, people took pride in pointing out the trees they had planted and nurtured as youngsters. “For those were the days,” wrote Fergusson, “when if citizens thought anything should be done for the town, they went out and with hoe and shovel or water bucket, they did it.”

In lieu of lawn grass the park was seeded with alfalfa. Although it made a good ground cover and enriched the soil, the alfalfa was irresistible to family cows that sometimes escaped from nearby (continued on next page)

pastures and wandered the dusty streets. The cows nibbled at the young trees as well, so to protect the park a barbed wire fence was strung around it.

To finance these improvements a popularity contest was held.

Young ladies sold tickets, with proceeds going to the park fund.

Admirers could cast a vote for their favorite girl by buying a ticket.

Whichever girl sold the most won naming rights to the new park. The winner was Miss Lena Robinson whose father, a Santa Fe Railroad executive, purchased most of her tickets. The park has been called Robinson Park ever since.

Later, a bandstand and benches were added, and for a time a pair of Civil War cannons were displayed there. In 1897, a fountain was erected near the west end of the park to honor the memory of John Braden, the hero who gave his life to save countless others from a team of runaway horses pulling a wagonload of burning fireworks.

(Braden was the subject of an earlier column, September 2015.)

Today, the bandstand and the cannons and the barbed wire are gone, but the Braden memorial fountain remains. Robinson Park continues to be a vibrant part of the downtown scene, hosting a growers’ market every Saturday morning from mid-April through October.

Meanwhile, Old Town Plaza was also taking on a distinctly more parklike appearance. Paintings and photographs from the 1880s show the plaza enclosed by a whitewashed picket fence and landscaped with young trees and shrubbery, although the octagonal guardhouse that served as an early jail still sat in the middle of it.

So which park is Albuquerque’s oldest? Take your choice. It’s not a controversy I wish to take sides in.

In next month’s column we’ll take a look at the history of two other Albuquerque parks that date from the Depression era.

Computer Scams Gain Sophistication: A Reporter Learns The Hard Way

I

never thought I’d be lured by a scam. I’m 46, welleducated, knowledgeable of current events, and I use computers and a smart phone constantly. It was unthinkable in my mind that anyone would pull one over on me – and then I clicked on an innocent looking website link during a Google search.

The site not only froze my computer but also launched a sinister pop-up window, sounded a flurry of headache-inducing alarms and issued a robotic voice urgently warning in a looped recording that someone was working to suck out every bit of information on my machine and that the whole system would be totally dead in minutes unless I called Microsoft’s 800-number provided in the pop-up.

As the unrelenting sirens wailed, sending all pets into hiding, I tried hitting the always reliable Ctrl+Alt+Delete combination on the keyboard; I pounded the Esc button; I clicked “Close” on the pop-up.

Nothing silenced the pandemonium. It just kept blaring at me. The chaos was designed to unhinge its victim, and it worked. I thought about turning off the machine, but then I also figured it might not come back on.

Fully panicked, what choice did I have but to call?

I am embarrassed to say that I fell prey to a common computer scam called “tech-support fraud.”

• Never give remote access to your device to anyone you don’t know and trust completely.

• Treat the internet as if someone with malintent is always watching for ways to obtain information about you.

• Avoid clicking directly on web links that people send you in emails, even if you know the sender. It is safer to copy and paste the link into your browser bar so that you can see the full URL address. This helps you to see at a glance if the address is really for the site being represented.

• Understand how web addresses work. The presence of “https” at the beginning indicates it is a secure site.

• Be attentive to the domain identifier. For example, a site that ends in “.com” is known as a “top level” domain controlled by a known company, whereas a “.co” is not. that when the hijack occurred, I was Googling CMT’s release date for the next season of the 12-year reality TV series Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team, which he haughtily refers to as “the worst show ever.”

I now know that I should have simply unplugged or turned off my computer and waited a few minutes before turning it back on. Instead, here’s what happened when I reached “Microsoft”: A technician who sounded as if he were in India told me that my computer had been infected by a virus, that all my files were at risk, but to calm down, everything was going to be OK. Over the continued commotion, he said he would help me turn off the noise and kindly walk me through the steps to get things working properly and securely.

He needed remote access to the device to do this. (OK, just make it stop!) He would also show me via diagnostics where the invasion had occurred so I could see the severity of the problem for myself before trusting him to move forward.

I have no idea what he showed me, but he silenced my world, and I loved him for it. In hindsight, he had not produced proof of hacked files; nothing was wrong with my computer.

After a few minutes, his requests and language grew more and more suspicious. I became increasingly uncomfortable that a lot of movement was happening on my screen that I didn’t understand and that he had complete control. I returned to my senses and completely shut down my internet connection at the wall.

If he had been able to continue, experts say, it is likely one of two things would have occurred: 1) I would have been asked for a credit card to pay for unnecessary repairs or 2) the thieves would have installed “malware,” software that would help them gain access to accounts and private information.

While I am clearly not all that tech-savvy, I did think of myself as scam-aware before this. I know not to give out credit card or financial information over the phone or in an email to anyone, to ignore emails from Nigeria and to hang up on the son I don’t have when he calls needing money in Europe. But this didn’t follow the same rules and clues of these longstanding scams that blatantly ask for something personal – and that are usually accompanied by poor grammar and spelling errors. This was more complex, more believable (continued on next page)

and is just one example of the increasingly sophisticated tactics being employed by scammers.

“A 2016 global survey by Microsoft found that two out of three people experienced such a scam in the past year,” according to a cover article about scams in the June 2018 edition of Consumer Reports.

The magazine quoted Courtney Gregoire, assistant general counsel for Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit, as saying, “We get approximately 13,000 complaints each month worldwide from consumers who have experienced techsupport scams by fraudsters claiming to be from legitimate tech companies.”

Apple and Dell are two others frequently used in the heist.

Nick Campbell, CEO of Diakonos Technology Group LLC in Albuquerque, works with regulated industries in which information security is critical.

His company boasts a combined 30+ years of experience in the IT field. He says, “People doing these are professionals. It’s their job to try to deceive and get what they can. Some are looking for information for ID theft that they can sell on the black market by getting remote access to your computer. Others are searching for financial information or they

having to do with TV shows and movies are just one. (Indeed, thieves attempted to accost my machine again during a search for the Season 2 launch date of Anne with an E on Netflix.

No, I did not fall for it a second time.) Others are searches for song lyrics. Earlier this summer, people trying to find spoilers for the next Avengers: Infinity Wars movie got hit with exploitive ads.

“It’s not always necessary that a website is compromised, but the ads supporting it - hackers pay to run advertising on those sites,” Campbell said.

He also advises against signing up for free stuff on the internet and using the same password for everything.

While signing up for that free horoscope may in and of itself be safe, the information you give to the site – email, name, age, etc. – may be sold to a variety of companies. You aren’t paying in dollars for the service but it is costing you your privacy. If you have ever done this and days later started receiving emails from companies you have never heard of, that is probably why.

If you are determined to go after the free stuff, you can protect yourself by creating a secondary, “throwaway,” email account that you don’t really use, providing the companies with

email address, that only leaves one denominator for scammers to unlock – the password. If they succeed with one of your “secure” sites, they’ll then be able to access all of them if the password is the same.

To keep from having to remember a dozen or more passwords, Campbell suggests using a password manager.

These are cloud-based and use military-grade encryption to protect them. Cost is minimal to have them at your fingertips and safe from prying eyes.

A City Councilor And Medal-Winning Pole Vaulter

I

n his official Albuquerque City Council photo, Councilor Brad Winter, wears a suit, a dark blue tie and a big grin. But in reality, pole vaulting is what makes Winter smile It has been his go-to sport for more than 50 years.

He started at 10; he’s now 66. He remembers building a makeshift runway in his back yard with buddies and jumping for hours with broomsticks and bamboo poles.

“It’s just fun,” Winter said of vaulting, which demands physical strength, gymnastic flexibility, speed, technique and timing. He’s training for his fourth New Mexico Senior Olympics State Summer Games in July. Between July 1822, athletes will compete at venues across Albuquerque. Track & Field events will be at the University of New Mexico South Campus track off Avenida Cesar Chavez. Athletes must qualify in the State Summer Games to be eligible for next year’s Big Show – the National Senior Games presented by Humana, which will be in Albuquerque June 14-22, 2019. It’s New Mexico’s first opportunity to host the National Senior Games, which are held in different cities every other year. Organizers estimate approximately 10,500 athletes, plus 15,000 family members will attend.

Winter won vaulting recognition during high school. As a senior at Albuquerque’s Highland High School, he helped his team win the 1970 Boys Track & Field State Championships with a 14-foot jump. As a student the following year at New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, his team took the National Track & Field Championship.

In 2016, he was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame.

He continued vaulting at the University of Oklahoma, where he won the 1973 Big 8 Conference Championship to achieve AllAmerican status.

Winter returned to New Mexico Junior College as a professor, but eventually returned to Albuquerque to earn his Doctorate of Education

from UNM. For 22 years, he taught school, coached and served as an upper-level administrator with the Albuquerque Public Schools, until his retirement in 2014.

Since 1999, Winter has been elected to the Albuquerque City Council District 4 representing the Northeast Heights. He is Albuquerque’s longest serving city councilor. All the while, he has vaulted competitively at the state and national level. In the New Mexico Senior Olympics, he has won two Gold Medals in his age groups and a Silver Medal in the 2017 National Senior Games in Birmingham, AL. He trains by vaulting twice a week, hitting the weights four or five times a week and walking 10,000 steps with his wife, attorney Nann Winter. The couple have seven children ages 18 to 34.

After a right knee replacement, he said he’s a “new man.” During his weekly practices, he jumps with younger vaulters who are amazed at the number of jumps he makes, varying the distance of sprints, the height of jumps and other factors to maximize his workout. Nor does he plan on quitting.

“I’ve competed my whole life,” said Winter. “The older you get, the slower you go. But everybody does it because they love it.”

Isleta Resort & Casino Unveils New Bingo Facility & Poker Room

I

sleta Resort & Casino is unveiling the newest editions to its $40 million renovation, including a new Bingo Facility, new Poker Room, and a new Nightclub. The new editions come more than a year into the Resort’s renovation, which began in early 2017.

“Isleta Resort & Casino is truly Where the Fun Begins,” said Isleta Pueblo Governor J. Robert Benavides. “We’re excited to welcome our friends and community members to see these beautiful new attractions,” he continued.

The Resort’s new Bingo facility opens on July 12th. Guests will enjoy exciting grand opening festivities, including a $20,000 total giveaway held on July 13th and 14th, as well as a Camaro giveaway in August, for which guests can begin earning entries now. The new bingo facility holds up to 400 guests at one time and includes convenient access to

Fourth of July officially kicks off barbecue season. There’s no better way to celebrate Independence Day and summer than by going back to basics with hamburgers paired with guacamole on the side.

Yet as simple as burgers are to make, they don’t always turn out like we plan.

For burgers full of flavor, I turned to two of my favorite chefs, Bobby Flay and Michael Symon, both hamburger aficionados. Flay participated in a segment last summer on the Today Show featuring mouthwatering juicy hamburgers. I found his recipe on Foodnetwork.com.

For guacamole, I chose Ina Garten’s recipe, combined with a few of my own additions, because I prefer a chunky guacamole.

Chef Michael Symon, co-host of The Chew and best friend of Flay, says his perfect burger mix is equal parts sirloin, brisket and short rib, which gives about 20 percent fat in the burger. “When the burger cooks, the fat melts out and bastes the burger, that’s what makes a burger delicious,” he said in the recent “Summer Comforts Series” episode of The Chew.

Flay agrees: “The most important thing in terms of the blend is the ratio of meat to fat, so you want about 80 percent beef to 20 percent fat. That’s the key,” he said in Foodnetwork.com’s “13 Things You Didn’t Know About Bobby Flay” article.

FOUR HILLS Dog Park

Ingredients: • 1 1/2 pounds ground chuck (80 percent lean) or ground turkey (90 percent lean) • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1 1/2 tablespoons canola oil • 4 slices cheese (optional) • 4 hamburger buns, split; toasted, if desired Directions: Toasted Burger Buns Divide the meat into four equal portions (about 6 ounces each). Form each portion loosely into a 3/4-inch-thick burger and make a deep depression in the center with your thumb. Season both sides of each burger with salt and pepper.

Heat a gas grill to high, or heat coals in a charcoal grill until they glow bright orange and ash over. Brush the burgers with the oil. Grill the burgers until golden brown and slightly charred on the first side, about three minutes for beef and five minutes for turkey. Flip over the burgers. Cook beef burgers until golden brown and slightly charred on the second side, four minutes for medium rare (three minutes if topping with cheese) or until cooked to the desired degree of doneness. Cook turkey burgers until cooked throughout, about five minutes on the second side.

Add the cheese, if using, to the tops of the burgers during the last minute of cooking and top with a basting cover. Close the grill cover or tent the burgers with aluminum foil to melt the cheese.

Sandwich the hot burgers between the buns and serve immediately. Pairs well with merlot. (continued on next page)

Ingredients: • 4 ripe Haas avocados • 3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice (1 lemon) • 8 dashes hot pepper sauce • 1/2 cup small-diced red onion (1 small onion) • 1 large garlic clove, minced • 1 teaspoon kosher salt • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 1 medium tomato, seeded, and small-diced Note: I add two to three jalapeños, finely chopped, 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, and I often use lime instead of lemon. Habanero hot sauce is a good alternative heat source for the regular hot sauce.

Directions: Cut the avocados in half, remove the pits, and scoop the flesh out of their shells into a large bowl. (I use my hands.) Immediately add the lemon juice, hot pepper sauce, onion, garlic, salt, and pepper and toss well. Using a sharp knife, slice through the avocados in the bowl until they are finely diced. Add the tomatoes. Mix well and taste for salt and pepper.

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a condition that occurs when a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep.

The interruptions are known as hypopneas or apneas. Hypopneas consist of periods of shallow or slower respirations, and apneas are brief cessations of breathing.

Sleep apnea causes disruption to normal sleep patterns; this can cause issues with sleepiness during the day, which can affect school or work. It can also contribute to a number of medical conditions, including high blood pressure, depression, heart conditions, diabetes and stroke. In addition, drivers with sleep apnea may have an increased risk for car accidents.

How common is sleep apnea?

According to the National Healthy Sleep Awareness Project, at least 25 million adults in the

United States have sleep apnea.

The rate of sleep apnea has risen significantly over the past few decades; this is likely related to an increase in the number of overweight or obese people, who are at greater risk for sleep apnea.

What are the risk factors for sleep apnea?

Individuals who have a higher risk for sleep apnea include men, adults age 40 or older, and people with nasal or sinus issues. Risk factors also include larger neck sizes (16 inches or larger for women and 17 inches or larger for men), enlarged tonsils or a family history of sleep apnea.

What are the symptoms of sleep apnea?

Symptoms may include daytime sleepiness, difficulty concentrating at school or work, loud snoring, headaches in the morning, restless sleep, awakening in the morning unrefreshed, and waking up multiple times in the night. A sleeping partner may notice that you gasp or stop breathing for short periods. Waking up with a

dry or sore throat can also be a sign.

Should I see my doctor if I’m concerned that I have sleep apnea?

Depending on your symptoms, seeing your doctor may be a good idea. Your doctor can take a detailed history of your symptoms, perform a physical exam, and, if appropriate, order additional testing or possibly refer you to a specialist for evaluation.

Consider seeing your doctor if you have such loud snoring that wakes yourself or your partner, or if you have excessive sleepiness during the day that is causing you to fall asleep at inappropriate times, such as while driving or working.

If you have shortness of breath or choking that wakes you up, that is also a good reason to see your doctor.

How is sleep apnea diagnosed?

In addition to performing a history and physical exam, your doctor may order a test known as a sleep study. A polysomnogram, one type of sleep study, measures your breathing rate and other vital signs while you sleep to document changes in your breathing.

Tests may be done at home or in specialized settings known as sleep labs.

How is sleep apnea treated?

There are a number of approaches to treatment. If your weight is believed to be a contributing factor to the condition, weight loss might

help. Adjusting behavior, such as avoiding alcohol prior to bedtime or changing your sleep position, may also help. Other treatments are available. If you are diagnosed with sleep apnea, your doctor or sleep physician can discuss additional options with you.

Are Cockroaches That Bad? Ask The Not really.

ure, if they come out of a sewer system, we don’t want them around, but they aren’t inherently evil. In fact, they appear to have a lot to offer modern medicine.

Scientists have identified nine antibiotic molecules in the brains of cockroaches and locusts that protect them from voracious, lethal bacteria. The implications of these findings cannot be overstated. Consider our ongoing battle with MRSA—a type of bacteria that flourishes in hospitals, locker rooms and playgrounds. When a human comes into contact with MRSA, the bacteria burrow into the skin, forming a welt. If the victim is lucky, the welt turns into a painful

abscess, which can be drained.

But sometimes the bacteria go deeper into the body, driving their way through muscles, joints, bones and vital organs. In 2007, more people died from MRSA than from AIDS, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Scientists haven’t been able to develop a drug to treat this type of infection. However, researchers at Britain’s University of Nottingham found that when MRSA is pitted against the antibiotics in a cockroach brain, the bacteria don’t stand a chance.

The cockroach molecules wipe out 90 percent of MRSA bacteria on contact.

And that’s not all. According to the CDC, six people infected with E. coli, associated with undercooked meat and dirty water, die each year from complications because our best meds are ineffective. But when a cockroach cocktail was used on E.

coli in the lab, it knocked out the bacteria. There are a lot of hurdles to overcome before cockroach brains are available in drug stores, so don’t go shopping for them yet.

Cockroaches have also created more jobs than any other bug.

Most of the pest control industry is the result of our trying to make cockroaches extinct. I am not saying you should welcome cockroaches into your home,

but there is not a need for mass destruction of them or any other pests. There are safe and effective methods of controlling.

seep into the soil and to the roots of plants. This adds nutrients to the soil. They are very beneficial in that they break down organic material to a large degree. A colony of 10,000 ants will bring about 20 pounds of organic material back to their nest in one day. They often transplant seeds by carrying them and then dropping them along their routes.

They can even pollinate some plants - not to the degree of bees, of course, but plants with flowers

low to the ground are frequently pollinated by ants. They also will feed on some bugs they encounter, so they are technically in the pest control business.

How are ants harmful?

Carpenter ants in some parts of the country can do damage to wood in homes, but that isn’t a problem in the Southwest. They need damp wood, and our climate is too dry. So while carpenter ants may wander into your home looking for food or water, they will not do any damage unless you have a plumbing leak in a wall or other areas conducive to sustaining wet wood.

Other ants often called sugar ants will get in your home and help themselves to any food

left out. They usually like areas around sinks because of the water.

When I had acrobat ants on my kitchen counter, I put out a piece of paper with some pancake syrup on it. The ants fed on that for a couple of weeks and then went back outside. I didn’t have to kill them. I just fed them and they left.

When you get ants in your house, you certainly don’t need an exterminator or pesticides. There are safe and effective methods of dealing with them, as well as with cockroaches. Pesticides are weapons of mass destruction and should never be used around our children at home, in schools or in any public areas.

Working in the Center. To volunteer, you must be able to answer calls pleasantly, following a basic script, and perform administrative tasks like keyboarding, printing, and faxing. Training will be provided. You must be able to speak clearly and hear well on the phone. Doing outreach.

We are looking for individuals that are comfortable working on a computer and have great attention to detail. Desert Harvest was started in 2001 to address two needs -- to alleviate hunger in central New Mexico and to provide volunteer opportunities for people with disabilities. Desert Harvest fights hunger in an incredibly cost-effective way, by making use of an existing but underutilized food source: surplus food from restaurants, hotels, schools, and supermarkets that would otherwise be thrown away. At just 4 cents per meal, the program is considered one of the most efficient food recovery programs in the nation! Senior Transportation Ride Coordinator: Answer phones, confirm ride requests and match rider and driver. (Coordinate rides).

an artery in the brain becomes blocked in two ways: thrombotic and embolic. Thrombotic stroke is responsible for nearly half of all strokes. Large and small vessel thrombosis are the two ways in which diseased or damaged arteries become blocked with a blood clot formed in the brain.

A

stroke occurs when the flow of blood to the brain is interrupted, leading to the death of brain cells. Signs of a stroke may be slurred speech, numbness or drooping of one side of the body, blurred vision, headache, or a general loss of accuracy in body movements and functions.

If any constellation of these signs appears unexpectedly, respond immediately by calling 911 for yourself or another person. Immediate treatment is essential to save brain tissue for survival and recovery.

An embolic stroke is a result of a blood clot released within the bloodstream from outside of the brain (usually the heart), blocking an artery in the brain. Hemorrhagic strokes result from a leak or rupture of a brain vessel. Unmanaged high blood pressure, excessive use of blood thinners and aneurysms (thin and weak portions of blood vessel walls) are likely the cause of a hemorrhagic event. A transient ischemic attack, or TIA, describes a temporary disruption of blood flow

to the brain. A TIA (sometimes called a mini-stroke) is shorter in duration and less likely to cause permanent brain damage, but still worth taking very seriously.

It’s important to learn about different stroke mechanisms to better understand why whole body health is essential to prevent one from happening. According to Harvard Medical School, lifestyle modifications can make a significant impact on stroke prevention. A vegetable-centered diet and a reduction of saturated and trans fats may prevent clotting that turns to ‘plaque’ leading to a stroke. Eliminating excess dietary salt for those with high blood pressure can forestall a catastrophic event.

The American Heart/Stroke Association has said that “physical activity in stroke survivors should emphasize low- to moderate-intensity aerobic activity, muscle-strengthening activity, reduction of sedentary behavior, and risk management for secondary prevention of stroke.” Here is a list to keep in mind: Eat healthfully, stay active, manage blood pressure, quit smoking, control diabetes, guarantee adequate oxygen intake during sleep and drink in moderation (or not at all).

Salicylic acid is a hormone found in plants such as white willow and meadowsweet, or spirea. It is believed spirea was what inspired Bayer pharmaceutical company to come up with the name “aspirin” in the late 1890s. The health benefits of salicylic acid have been recorded consistently from ancient Egypt (400 BC) to today. The Lancet published in 2016 evidence that using aspirin immediately after a stroke can reduce reoccurring strokes and side effects. Aspirin keeps blood platelets running smoothly through the narrow passageways of the cardiovascular system. If you take a blood thinner, have a hemorrhagic bleeding condition, or have a pending surgery, do not take aspirin. Consult your physician and pharmacist for guidance on how to best administer this drug.

Strokes are very much related to the cardiovascular system. The Journal of the American Heart Association published a paper in September 2017 recognizing the benefits of meditation on cardiovascular systems. Meditation has repeatedly been found to lower stress, and decreased stress benefits the cardiovascular system and brain health.

Meditation, mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and yoga can help those healing from stroke symptoms. A 2012 study published in the journal Brain Injury says the practice of MBSR can “improve long-term mental fatigue after a stroke.” Practicing yoga or tai chi is a great way to align the left and right sides of the body. Check for chair-based forms of yoga for stroke recovery (and prevention) at senior centers or in online videos. In the peer-reviewed journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine (2013), researchers found that “yoga and mindfulness could be clinically valuable self-administered intervention options for stroke rehabilitation.” If you are looking for practitioner guided strategies, perhaps a state-licensed, board-certified doctor of Oriental medicine can introduce treatments such as bodywork, herbal therapy, electro-stimulation therapy and scalp acupuncture.

The National Stroke Association has developed an easy way to spot stroke warnings so you can act FAST- Face, Arms, Speech, Time.

If you see changes in these areas, remember to call 911 immediately. For those dealing with stroke complications personally or within your network, faith and courage are essential. Patients that believe in healing engage placebo that studies show gives them an advantage.

Belief keeps therapies in place that work very slowly to regenerate (or redesign) neural networks. May you find the courage to keep up the hard work of healing.

few times a week. All you need is a comfortable pair of shoes for support. The moderate activity can mean a healthier life, increased energy levels, decreased stress, better sleep and a great way to socialize.

Seniors can decrease their risk of disability and increase their likelihood of maintaining independence by 41 percent by participating in a walking exercise program, according to researchers at the University of Georgia. The study started participants at 10 minutes of walking three times a week. Over the four-month study, they worked up to an endurance of 40 minutes at a time. Ten-minute warm-up and cool- down periods were emphasized. Breathing capacity (aerobic capacity) of the walking group increased by 19 percent over the course of the study. The comparison group that attended sedentary classes showed a nine percent decrease in their aerobic capacity.

Yale Medical School researchers have found that the likelihood of becoming disabled with age increases with the following factors: having a chronic condition or cognitive impairment; low physical activity; slower gross motor coordination; having poor lower-extremity function; and being hospitalized. Women are also more likely than men to become disabled in their later years.

The Harvard School of Public Health evaluated more than 13,000 women who had reached the age of 70. Women who regularly walked at a moderate pace had much higher odds of staving off disease and aging successfully than their counterparts who didn’t exert themselves beyond leisurely, easy walking.

Picking up the pace beyond just moderate intensity may also be especially beneficial. The women who walked at a very brisk clip increased their odds of successful aging three-fold. The benefits of exercise were equal for women across all weight ranges.

Dancing, too, is an effective way to achieve aerobic benefits. Dance requires constant movement, which elevates the heart rate to

pump oxygen faster through your blood. Doing aerobics five to six days a week can help improve your energy levels, lower your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes, strengthen your heart, and improve your mood. The American Council on Exercise suggests that dancing for aerobic fitness also can help improve your memory.

There are many dance exercise DVDs that you can use at home, or you might want to venture out for a senior dance exercise class. Many community centers, churches and school programs offer them. Low-impact aerobics, salsa, jazz, tap, martial arts-style dance, ballroom and even chair aerobics all allow you to work at your own pace.

Before beginning a new dance exercise class, ask the instructor if you can watch or try a class for free. This will help you decide which style is right for you.

Choose a class that provides clear instruction and is for any level.

If you prefer working out at home, choose a DVD that is appropriate for your skill level.

Another way to use dance as aerobic exercise is to turn on your favorite music and move.

If you prefer to get off your feet, swimming or other exercise in a pool is a great way to minimize skeletal impact. For those with arthritis, a heated pool can truly provide comfort.

Increased flexibility and improved muscle strength are only some of the benefits of water exercise.

Swimming is recognized as one of the biggest calorie burners around, and it’s great for keeping weight under control. The number of calories you burn with any exercise depends upon your own physiology and the intensity of the activity.

As always, check with your health care provider before embarking on an exercise program. Whether it is oneth by land (walking / dancing ) or twoeth by sea ( swimming), keep moving. Immobility is the enemy of seniors, so get your back up off the wall and join the celebration of your independence.
