appy new year to you and your family! The new year always brings hope and many opportunities for a fresh a start. I ended 2021 with two articles on diabetes complications and would like to start the new year by completing the discussion with an article on prediabetes. Do you have prediabetes?

What is prediabetes, and what does it mean if I have prediabetes?

About 88 million Americans age 18 and older have prediabetes, and 90 percent don’t know they have it. That means one in three adults has prediabetes. This number is likely to grow based on recent trends. Prediabetes is a serious health condition where a person’s blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to

be called diabetes. Prediabetes means that the cells in your body do not respond normally to insulin.

Having prediabetes puts you at risk for developing type 2 diabetes mellitus, heart disease and stroke.

In fact, prediabetes and diabetes are more common in older adults.

How is prediabetes diagnosed?

In August 2021, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force issued an updated recommendation on screening for prediabetes and diabetes. Screening is recommended in adults 35-70 years old who are overweight or obese. The age at which to begin screening was dropped from 40 years to 35 years because data has shown an increase in diabetes starting at 35. Being overweight or obese are the strongest risk factors for developing prediabetes and diabetes. Some experts recommend even earlier screening in persons of (continued on Page 4)

appy new year, and happy anniversary to Prime Time. The year 2022 not only marks the Albuquerque publication’s 30th year as northcentral New Mexico’s premier magazine for ages 50 and older, but it also brings the first transition in Prime Time’s ownership in a decade. As of the end of the month, Prime Time will be woman-owned.

Publisher Dave Rivord, who is retiring, will pass the baton to Ashley Conner and Dana Benjamin. Both women have

worked with Rivord as designers since he took over Prime Time in 2010. Advertising executive Matt Gantner, who worked with Rivord in the advertising department of another local publication for nearly 30 years, will round out the leadership team.

“This is going to be a seamless transition,” Rivord said. “Readers should see no change except for in a positive direction. Its mission is still going to be to bring to seniors the stories that nobody else locally really writes about and that are relevant, interesting, and fun to an older – and wiser – age group.”

“We want our tried-and-true print readers to feel confident that their Prime Time magazine is still going to bring them the content they want, but we also want to ensure that younger generations just entering their AARP years will have a compelling, interactive, and

user-friendly online experience with us,” Conner said. “We’re not taking a single thing away; we’re just adding more.”

The evolution means advertisers will be able to buy ads online, and 50+ Expo vendors can look forward to securing their booths online. Readers can expect comprehensive event calendars and an online version of the Caregiver Guide directory with links to helpful resources, such as hospice options.

“Every year, younger folks are getting a bit older and have a different mindset about how they want to get their news,” Rivord said. “So, Prime Time will be supplementing the printed product with a more robust online presence. The new owners have the tools and skills to do that, and they’re going to take it to the next level.”

The staff and contributors will comprise an all-local team of 1012. Many have been a part of the Prime Time family over the years.

“It’s not just a whole new group of people. We know the business inside and out,” Conner said. “Plus, Dave is going to be a consultant for the foreseeable future. Dave’s not going anywhere.”

“I was asked by my late husband, Jim, to write the book about our life together. He had Asperger’s -- he wanted others to feel the relief he felt about the diagnosis.”

hether because of holiday indulgences or the quarantine 15, many people are ready to get into shape and take control of their health. However, even as we resolve to eat better, exercise more, and make positive lifestyle changes in the new year, we

issues in the future, and we make sure to design a program that teaches them good lifelong habits that they’ll stick to.”

U.S. Air Force Ret. M.Sgt. Edward Otero, 73, has been building good exercise habits since childhood.

“I remember as an adolescent growing up in Barelas and walking past my aunt’s clothesline and

often find it challenging to stick to a plan without professional help.

Omar Negrete, director of operations at medical gym New Heart Fitness and Health in Albuquerque, said setting foot in a gym is sometimes the most challenging part.

“Some of our members are reluctant to go to a regular gym because they feel uncomfortable,” Negrete said. “The key is getting started. Our members don’t feel intimidated here because they work out with people just like themselves. … Some of our members are here for cardiac rehabilitation; others are looking to prevent heart disease and pulmonary issues.”

Since New Heart Fitness and Health is a program of the New Mexico Heart Institute Foundation, most of its 400 members are referred by cardiologists and pulmonologists for medically-supervised exercise, and a doctor is on site at least three times a week. However, referrals are not required.

“We work to design a program based on the member’s needs,” Negrete said. “Our programs help people who are trying to prevent

cranking out chin-ups,” said Otero, who is, in full disclosure, related to the reporter of this story. “I also recall running along the ditch off of 10th and Pacific Street for about 45-minutes to an hour. My friends and I would ride our bicycles for several hours each day.”

To keep his youthful vim and vigor, Otero said he watches his carbohydrate intake, drinks plenty of green smoothies made with mixed vegetables and protein powder, and hits the gym regularly. He believes it’s the best way to get a full-body workout due to the diversity of exercise available.

“I work out at Defined Fitness about five times a week, where I swim laps, do free weights and weight machines. I also do my cardio workout on the elliptical machine.

Even when my schedule becomes busy, I make time to get to the gym to work on my fitness routine.”

Otero didn’t miss a beat even when gyms were closed during the pandemic, choosing to lift weights at home and ride his bike.

“I like to aim for at least one hour of physical activity each day.

Although I prefer to workout at the

gym, sometimes everyday activities are an excellent opportunity to be active.”

Indeed, gyms aren’t for everyone.

Many people feel as if they are on display during a workout and prefer more privacy; for others, getting to a gym takes precious time out of the day; and of late, risk of catching the novel coronavirus or other illness has some seniors unwilling to go to a gym, especially those have underlying health problems that may make them more susceptible to illness.

“Gyms are great,” said Sonja Boles, 64, of Albuquerque. “I’ve been a member of many, but they don’t factor into my lifestyle.

“This has nothing to do with Covid; it’s about making the trek to a gym, which takes up valuable time for me. … I live in the foothills, so I have many options as far as trails to run or walk, which is a better choice for me than driving to the gym.”

training, walks with her dogs, Coco and Jack, and eating a healthful diet.

She tries to drink a good amount of water, eat few animal products, avoid processed foods and those that contain high fat or sugar, and consume a good number of healthy grains.

She also prefers to exercise alone: “When you work out with someone, it tends to become a visitation, and I like to focus on my workout,” Boles said.

Boles ran her first marathon at the age of 48 in the Las Vegas (Nevada) Marathon, where she lived for 30 years. Since then, she has completed 12 marathons, including the Duke City Marathon. Boles even placed first in her age category in the Susan G. Komen 5K Runs for five consecutive years.

The bottom line, said New Heart’s Negrete, is “if you find something that you enjoy, you’ll stick to it – if you don’t like it, you won’t. Find something you like to make it fun.”

Gratuitous Violence On The Streets Of Albuquerque Is Nothing New

A

ll of Albuquerque was shocked and disgusted by the senseless death last month of a 7-year-old boy who was run down by a speeding off-road vehicle in a crosswalk on Central Avenue at Tingley Drive. The boy and his family had just come from visiting the River of Lights display at the nearby BioPark when the tragedy occurred. Unfortunately, such lethal recklessness, often fueled by alcohol or drugs, is nothing new in Albuquerque.

On the afternoon of May 27, 1898, Patricio O’Bannon, 7, his cousin Arturo García, 6, and two or three other boys around the same age were playing in the front yard of the O’Bannon home near the corner of Barelas Road and Bridge Street (now Avenida César Chávez) after spending the day catching frogs along the riverbank. Meanwhile, not far away, a young cowboy named José P. Ruiz and a companion were racing their horses through the streets of the Barelas neighborhood, brandishing their revolvers and shooting wildly.

The day before, they had sold some stolen cattle and invested the profits in a drinking spree that had gone on all night and into the next day. As they approached the O’Bannons’ yard, Ruiz, for no apparent reason, leveled his gun at the group of boys and fired at least two rounds. One bullet grazed the scalp of Arturo García.

Another struck Patricio O’Bannon in the back, killing him.

García survived his wound and went on to live many more years.

In 1959, at the age of 67, he was interviewed by Albuquerque Tribune reporter Howard Bryan, who wrote about the incident in his popular column, Off the Beaten Path. “Ruiz had no excuse at all for shooting at us kids,”

García recalled. “We weren’t in the street. In fact, there was a fence between us and the street.”

The two cowboys spurred their horses, rode west across the Barelas Bridge, and split up on the other side. Sheriff Tom Hubble and Town Marshal Fred Fornoff set off in pursuit. They soon caught up with Ruiz and placed him under arrest. By then an angry mob had gathered in Barelas, and there was talk of a lynching. Hubble only managed to get his prisoner back to town and safely ensconced in the county jail in Old Town by hiding him in the bed of a wagon.

Ruiz was tried for murder, convicted, and sentenced to hang.

After two years of legal wrangling and an unsuccessful suicide attempt, Ruiz’s appeals were exhausted, and on the morning of June 1, 1900, he paid the ultimate price for his crime. For reasons that aren’t entirely clear, the hanging took place in a back room of Pat Gleason’s Gold Star Saloon, a seedy establishment on the south side of Railroad Avenue (now Central) about where the Old Town Post Office stands today. About 100 locals received invitations to witness the event.

It was one of the last public executions in Bernalillo County.

Standing on the gallows, Ruiz delivered an impassioned address in Spanish, which was translated into English by Nestor Montoya, a well-known newspaper publisher. Ruiz warned his listeners against the evils of liquor, which, he said, “has brought me to this scaffold” and asked them to pray for his soul.

Then the trap fell.

This tragedy took place more than a century ago, but events like it fill every nightly newscast.

hat better day to celebrate Read Across America Day with your grandchild than on the birthday of the beloved Dr. Seuss, March 2nd? It’s the perfect kickoff to March’s National March Into Literacy Month, both of which are dedicated to the promotion of reading and literacy.

Read Across America Day was first introduced by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1998. The NEA’s goal for the celebration is to motivate kids to become lifelong readers, thereby improving student performance.

Every year, schools, public libraries, and other organizations celebrate this day by holding reading events for kids.

Ways grandparents can promote reading There are many ways to promote a love of reading and encourage grandkids to read not only during this celebration but year-round.

Read to kids. Begin reading to your grandchild very early.

The NEA suggests infancy is an excellent time to start. As your grandchild grows, encourage their participation in reading the story with or to you. Although your grandchild may not be ready to read, kids often memorize some of their favorite books or pages. Making children an active participant helps develop their love for reading.

Visit the library. Think of the library as a big free educational toy store. Help your grandchild choose some books, but also encourage him or her to select some on their own. Kids can also take home audiobooks, video games, videos, and music CDs. Help your grandchild build a collection. One thing common among reading lovers is how much they enjoy having their own book collection. Help your grandchild grow a personal library of their

favorite series, author, or genre.

Then assign a special shelf to store and display the collection.

Play word games. Look for board, computer, or phone games that help kids develop their reading and spelling skills and vocabulary.

Sign up for Goodreads.

Through this Android and iOS app, kids can track both the books they’ve read and those they want to read. They can also check out what their friends are reading.

Subscribe your grandchild to a magazine. There’s a host of kids’ magazines on the market and something for every age group. It will give your grandchild something to look forward to each month and build enthusiasm for reading.

Read in front of your grandkids. Show them that reading isn’t just a school requirement, but rather a lifelong activity. Let them see you reading both to learn and for pleasure.

Form a kids’ book club. If your grandchild is interested in it, this is a great way to build excitement for reading. You’ll want to find kids who are all at about the same reading level. You’ll need to decide where to hold the weekly or monthly meetings, which could be at your house, or perhaps your school or public library will provide you space. You might be able to advertise it through your grandchild’s school or public library, as well.

Set up a reading room or corner. Find a quiet distractionfree area in your home to designate as the reading area. It should have comfy seating, perhaps even a bean bag or two, pillows, blankets, and good lighting.

ear Savvy Senior, I would like to get my personal, legal and financial information organized so my kids will know what’s going on when I’m no longer around. Can you offer any tips on the best way to do this?

Unorganized Emma Dear Emma, Organizing your important papers and getting your personal and financial affairs in order is a smart idea and wonderful gift to your loved ones. Here are some tips to get you started.

Get Organized The first step in getting your affairs in order is to gather up all your important personal, financial and legal information so you can arrange it in a format that will benefit you now, and your loved ones later.

Then you’ll need to sit down and create various lists of important information and instructions of how you want certain things handled when you die or if you become incapacitated. Here’s a checklist of areas you need to focus on.

PERSONAL INFORMATION • Contacts: Make a master list of names and phone numbers of close friends, doctors, and professional advisers such as your lawyer, accountant, broker and insurance agent.

• Medical information: Include a list of medications you take, along with any allergies and illnesses.

• Personal documents: Include such items as your birth certificate, Social Security card, marriage license, military discharge papers, etc.

• Secured places: List all the places you keep under lock and key such as safe deposit boxes, safe combination, security alarms, etc.

• Digital assets: Make a list of all your digital assets, including everything from social media accounts to online banking accounts to home utilities that you manage online. It should include usernames and passwords. Use Rutgers Digital Assets Inventory Worksheet (njaes. rutgers.edu/money/pdfs/digitalassets-worksheet.pdf) as a guide.

• Pets: If you have a pet, give instructions for the care of the animal.

• End of life: Indicate your wishes for organ and tissue donation and write out your funeral instructions.

If you’ve made pre-arrangements with a funeral home include a copy of agreement, their contact information and whether you’ve prepaid or not.

LEGAL DOCUMENTS • Will, trust and estate plan: Include the original copy of your will and other estate planning documents you’ve made.

• Financial power of attorney: This document names someone you trust to handle money matters if you’re incapacitated.

• Advance health care directives: This includes a living will and medical power of attorney, which spell out your wishes regarding your end-of-life medical treatment when you can no longer make decisions for yourself.

FINANCIAL RECORDS • Financial accounts: Make a list of all your bank accounts, brokerage and mutual fund accounts, and any other financial assets you have.

• Debts and liabilities: Make a list of any loans, leases or debts you have – mortgages owed, car loans, student loans, medical bills, credit card debts. Also, make a list of all credit and charge cards, including the card numbers and contact information.

• Company benefits: List any retirement plans, pensions or health benefits from your current or former employer including the contact information of the benefits administrator.

• Insurance: List the insurance policies you have (life, longterm care, home, auto, Medicare, Medigap, prescription drug, etc.) including the policy numbers, agents, and phone numbers.

• Property: List real estate, vehicles and other properties you own, rent or lease and include documents such as deeds, titles, and loan or lease agreements.

• Taxes: Include the location of your tax records and your tax preparer’s contact information.

Keep all your organized information and files together in one convenient location, ideally in a fireproof filing cabinet or safe in your home. Also be sure to review and update it every year, and don’t forget to tell your kids where they can find it.

very year we pledge to ourselves that the new year will bring a change for the better. Let’s begin 2022 with positive thinking and practicing kindness not only to others but also to ourselves.

This may begin by refraining from setting unrealistic goals that can make you feel as if you’ve failed early in the year. Putting a stop to unhealthy habits one by one, with achievable baby steps, can often result in greater success than attempting sweeping changes all at once.

For example, if weight loss is desired, begin with a goal of taking

just a few pounds off per month.

Examine your dietary intake, and make just a few changes. For example, limit meals to one serving of well-proportioned foods, drink water with the meal, and try not to eat late into the evening or close to bedtime.
