New Golf Rules Aim To Simplify, Speed Up Play

hanges to the Rules of Golf effective on Jan. 1 are designed to speed up play.

Here’s a quick overview.

There is no penalty for accidentally moving a ball while searching.

If you’re fumble-fingered, there is no longer a penalty for accidentally moving your ball or marker while marking and replacing it.

In taking relief from a cart path, for example, instead of having to drop at an exact spot, relief will be taken within a “relief area” defined as one club length no closer to the hole, as measured by using the player’s longest club other than a putter.

No longer will you have to drop a ball from shoulder height when taking relief. Instead, you’ll drop from knee height.

Albuquerque’s Street Names Tell Many Stories

hey say that fish don’t notice the water they swim in because they’re surrounded by it. In the same way, we who have lived in Albuquerque for a long time probably don’t think too much about the names of the streets we walk and drive on every day. But many of them have interesting stories to tell about our city’s past.

In the beginning there was Old Town, founded, as we all know, in 1706. Back then it was too small to need formal street names. Most of the modern names around the plaza are self-explanatory, but some are not. Romero Street, on the west side, is named for a family that owned property there. On old maps it appears as Santiago Street, after the patron saint of Spain. Charlevoix, a short street a couple of blocks north of the plaza, seems out of place with its French name. It may honor an 18th century explorer of the upper Mississippi Valley, but no one seems to know.

Parallel to it were the other east-west avenues, named to advertise the mineral wealth of the young Territory: Copper, Gold, Silver, Lead, Coal and Iron. Fittingly, Gold Avenue became the heart of the town’s financial district. The intersection of Gold and Second Street was known as “Bankers’ Corner” for the concentration of financial institutions there.

South of Downtown in the Barelas neighborhood, three more streets testify to the importance of the railroad, which was to be the main driver of Albuquerque’s growth for decades to come. There’s Santa Fe Avenue and also Atlantic and Pacific Avenues, named for the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad, a subsidiary of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe.

Stover and Hazeldine, in the same area, honor Elias S. Stover and William C. Hazeldine who, along with Franz Huning, were the principal developers of New Town. Making Your New Year Resolution More Personal

- Ralph Waldo Emerson, mid-19th century American philosopher and poet Most Americans would likely agree with Emerson - the ringing out of the old ought to include the things we’d like to do differently, ways in which to start over and try again.

Indeed, almost 50 percent of millennials planned to make New Year’s resolutions last year, according to Consumer Affairs.

However, only 16 percent of those in the age 56 and older demographic said they would. And when seniors make resolutions, those internal promises tend to be more personal and emotional in nature than they are tangible.

For example, most January resolutions vowed by the younger

population fall into one of two categories: the things they know they should do or the things they really want to do. You know what these are – promises to be more health conscious, both in food choices and by getting regular exercise. Many resolve to get more organized in the home and with finances. Other goals for any age might include updating legal documents and staying mentally acute by taking on new learning opportunities.

All of these issues are important and should be addressed. But for senior Americans, what seems to be at least equally important are goals that pertain to emotional and spiritual well-being. In fact, the seniors I spoke with confirmed the Consumer Affairs report; the majority didn’t make New Year’s resolutions but resolved to focus on continuous, smaller daily improvements instead. In the words of 20th century English artist Henry Moore, they “think in terms of the day’s resolutions, not the years.”

Since it is estimated that only about 10 percent of us keep our resolutions, perhaps Moore’s is the best advice for committing to improve our lives.

Be kind. You can add as many Bs as you’d like!”

The experts agree that for sustainable change, small steps toward improvement are more likely to lead to success. According to a recent article on VeryWellMind. com, a sure-fire way to sabotage a New Year’s resolution is to attempt radical change, such as expecting to run a marathon when you’ve never kept to a more moderate exercise routine. The same applies to challenging ourselves in other ways.

“I try and do five ‘be-a-goodhuman/good-to-myself’ deeds a day,” says Tijeras resident Kerry Walker, 57. “Something healthy for my body, something that feeds my soul, something to help others, give compliments, etc.”

Other popular goals for seniors include spending time with family, pledging to make new friends and simply enjoying life.

What if I haven’t exercised in a long time and I’m too old to start?

It’s never too late to start exercising. Remember to be prudent and consult with your doctor for recommendations and precautions prior to starting a new exercise program. Start slowly and gradually increase the level, duration and frequency of exercise. Physical activity is especially important for older adults and can help them to remain independent as long as possible. As a person ages, the body loses muscle, bone mass and strength. This can lead to problems such as back and joint pain, arthritis and osteoporosis.

Muscle weakness can lead to falls and serious injury. If you stay active and exercise regularly, you can slow the loss of muscle mass and strength, slow the rate of bone loss, and reduce joint and muscle pain. Regular exercise can also improve your mobility and balance, which decreases the chances of falling.

What research has been done on the benefits of older adults exercising?

A great deal of research consistently indicates that exercise improves the health of older adults. In a large study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association that included over 1,600 women and men between the ages of 70 and 89, half of the people participated in an exercise program of daily walking and strength and balance exercises.

Over the course of two and a half years, the people who exercised had a 28 percent lower chance of becoming disabled compared to the other half of people who did not exercise.

Navigating Through The New Tax Law

he holidays are over. You’ve taken down the decorations, packed up the tree and lights, and are ready to usher in a brand, new year. When the clock struck midnight Dec. 31, it also signaled the end of the tax year.

You may be aware that there have been changes to the tax law. But what are those changes, particularly if your auld lang syne included charitable giving?

Under the new Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, individuals who have itemized in the past to receive the tax benefit of donating to their church, synagogue or other charitable organization, must now meet the $12,000 annual minimum to qualify ($24,500 for married joint filers). However, there are ways around this change.

“One could bunch two- or three-years’ worth of donations to claim itemized deductions in one year and then claim the standard deduction in alternating years,” said Albuquerque CPA Jon Bell.

the American Heart Association is $7,500, you would have to wait until next year to claim the tax benefit, given your donation for tax years 2018-19 combined totals the new minimum.

“For those age 70 ½ and above, consider making qualified charitable distributions from your IRA directly to charities,” said Bell, who is also a certified tax coach. “The contributions count toward your required minimum distribution and isn’t included in your income. That could help you qualify for tax breaks tied to your adjusted gross income, and reduce or eliminate taxes on Social Security benefits.”

Still another option is to set up and transfer assets to a donoradvised fund. “You can claim a deduction for the amount invested in the fund and then make donations from the fund over subsequent years. While in the fund, the assets can be invested and grow tax free.”

“Seek professional advice when major changes happen in your life,” says Bell. “For those retiring soon or are in retirement, you need to consider very carefully when to start your Social Security benefits.

For those over age 70 ½, consider looking at the most tax-efficient way to take required minimum distributions. This could include a strategy of converting retirement assets to Roth IRAs.” Additionally, Bell advises speaking with a tax professional when thinking about selling

investment property or converting your home to a rental property.

With these major new changes in the tax law, there is good news for most taxpayers. “Tax rates are lower. Personal exemptions have been eliminated. The new law eliminates the personal exemption, which was scheduled to be $4,050 per exemption in 2018. The standard deductions are nearly doubled for everyone. Many taxpayers will see a reduction in their taxes in 2018.”

Bell, who has been helping individuals and businesses with proactive tax planning advice for more than 15 years, urges folks to seek the advice of a professional when attempting to discern the new tax changes.

“The new tax law is complex, with implications that are different for everybody,” he said, adding that a seemingly inexpensive, online tax program is no substitute for a skilled tax expert who can save you much more in taxes than your overall fees. “You could buy a bone saw on eBay for $20 and do your own orthopedic surgery, but would you really want to do that?”

Low-income taxpayers may access free tax preparation services through the AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide program. They offer people 50 years old and older help filing their taxes with a trained volunteer. Additionally, the IRS offers taxpayers earning $65,000 or less access to free software to prepare their own taxes. More information can be found on their websites.

With whichever option you choose, now is the time to get a jump on tax season, especially if you tend to be the sort who puts the “pro” in procrastination.

iveABQ, a new initiative of Adelante Development Center, will be opening soon and the nonprofit needs the public’s support in stocking the warehouse that will soon benefit multiple nonprofit organizations across New Mexico.

If people in the Albuquerque metro area have furniture, household items, or durable medical equipment (like wheelchairs, walkers, bathing

aids, rollators, etc.), they should bring them to GiveABQ located at 1520 First Street NW in downtown Albuquerque, on Friday, December 14 from 9 AM to 3 PM and Saturday, December 15 from 9 AM to 1 PM. GiveABQ will pay the donations forward, offering FREE medical equipment like walkers, wheelchairs and shower stools to anyone in our community with a need. Furniture donations will be

used to support nonprofits in our community who support families transitioning in housing. Thanks to the collaborative approach of GiveABQ, donors will be able to give to one place and benefit multiple nonprofits and the people they support. The work is being organized by nonprofit Adelante Development Center, with seed funding provided by PNM Fund.

GiveABQ needs community donations to get this initiative

off the ground and to stock the warehouse, which will officially open in early 2019. Financial gifts to GiveABQ keep the operation sustainable.

Smart Home Devices That Can Help Seniors Age-In-Place

ear Savvy Senior, I recently read an article about how “smart home” devices can help seniors with aging-in-place. My 76-year-old mother, who likes technology, lives alone but I worry about her safety and would like to find out what types of smart home products can really help her.

Inquiring Son Dear Inquiring, There are actually a wide variety of affordable smart home devices you can add to your mom’s home that can help make it safer and easier to live in as she ages, and help reduce social isolation. Here’s what you should know.

Smart Home Technologies While most Americans today use technology and enjoy the conveniences they provide, there are millions of seniors who still don’t have much use for it. But you don’t have to like technology to benefit from the many different smart home automation devices that can help seniors with aging-in-place.

Smart home devices can also give family members and caregivers the ability to electronically keep tabs on their elder loved one when they can’t be there, which provides great peaceof-mind.

If you’re interested in adding some smart home devices to your

mom’s house, you need to know that smart home devices require home Wi-Fi, and for many of the products, she’ll need either a smartphone, tablet or smart speaker to operate them. Here are some popular aging-in-place smart home products to help you get started.

Voice-enabled assistant: If your mom doesn’t have a smartphone or tablet, or just wants to make things as easy as possible, a voice enabled smart speaker like the Amazon Echo (Amazon.com/echo), Google Assistant (Assistant.google.com) or Apple HomePod (Apple.com/ homepod) will allow her to operate compatible smart home products with simple voice commands.

These nifty voice technology devices can also play her favorite music, read audiobooks, make calls, set timers and alarms, provide reminders for medications, appointments and other things, check traffic and weather, ask questions, and much more.

Smart lights: Falls are common concerns among elderly seniors, which are often caused by fumbling around a dark room looking for a light switch. Smart light bulbs like the Philips Hue (MeetHue.com) can turn on and off the lights by voice command, smartphone or tablet.

These bulbs can also dim the lights and you can program them to turn on and off whenever you want.

There are also smart electric plugs like the Wemo Mini (Wemo. com) that offer remote control automation for lamps, fans, or other electrical devices.

Video doorbell: Safety is also a concern for seniors who live alone.

Smart doorbells like the Ring video doorbell (Ring.com) would allow your mom to see, hear and speak to someone at her door (via smartphone, tablet, Google smart displays, Amazon Echo Show or Spot) without having to open it.

Stovetop shut-off: To help seniors prevent home cooking fires, stovetop shut-off devices like the IGuardStove (IGuardFire.com) uses motion sensors to turn off

electric and gas stovetops when left unattended for a predetermined amount of time. It will also alert family members via text.

Medication management: Seniors on a complex medication schedule can benefit from a smart medication tracking system like the PillDrill (PillDrill.com) that reminds you when pills are due, tracks that you’ve taken them, and notifies loves ones.

Home monitoring: Family members can keep tabs on older loved ones from afar with smart home video cameras like Lighthouse Al (Light.house/ elderly-care) or a smart home sensor system like TruSense (MyTruSense.com).

Other options: Some other helpful smart home products to consider include smart door locks like Kwikset Kevo (Kwikset.com), smart thermostats such as the Nest (Nest.com), and smart nightlights like Aladin (Domalys.com), which detects falls and alerts caregivers.

The costs for most smart home products range anywhere from a few dollars to several hundred dollars and can be found in many local home improvement stores as well as online.

Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at Presbyterian and UNM Hospitals The Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at Presbyterian and UNM hospitals offer a place for parents to rest and regroup right at the hospital, just moments away from their sick child. The Family room volunteers greet families, maintain visitor data, stock food, drinks, and help families with their needs. Volunteers are asked to work one, three hour shift per week. eep breathing is a gift often recognized when it becomes a challenge. When the airway gets compromised from a common cold, allergies or chronic concerns due to lungrelated illnesses, it is apparent how precious breathing is. If and when you may suffer from restricted breathing, do not delay in seeking medical guidance to determine what type of breathing therapy or medication is best.

The flu or common cold can trigger asthma symptoms and worsen existing lung-related illnesses quickly. Being proactive when a viral infection is suspect is essential. A common cold or nonallergic rhinitis (The most common is the rhinovirus, spread by air or contact with the mouth, nose, or eye.) affects the upper respiratory tract. Nebulizers Can Assist With Deep Breathing

most susceptible to being overcome by a virus. Symptoms such as a cough, sneezing, stuffed or a runny nose, with or without phlegm, and head and body aches can take a few days to a couple of weeks to clear and can be tough to manage. A nebulizer may assist in clearing the lungs and speeding recovery times.

A nebulizer is a device that converts liquids, including medications, into a mist for inhalation into the lungs for absorption. Metered-dose inhalers are also excellent for delivering medicines to the lungs. Common medications include Albuterol, Budesonide, DuoNeb, Ipratropium, Pulmicort and Xopenex. One benefit of the nebulizer over the inhaler is that it moistens lungs, as the medicines are often suspended in saline solution that can loosen thick mucus.

Nebulizers are known to be effective in treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. They are also used when results with metereddose inhalers are not sufficient.

Frequent complaints of metereddose inhalers include the lack of time for the medication to be delivered into the lungs and that metered dose inhalers leave some medicine in the mouth or on the throat.

The most significant benefit of a nebulizer is the opportunity to administer nebulized saline.

There are two types - normal and hypertonic saline. Normal saline is 0.9 percent (similar to body fluids); hypertonic saline is 3 percent and 7 percent and requires a prescription.

Hypertonic saline is used for advanced stages of a respiratory illness.

In 2013, a Cochrane review found hypertonic saline used in bronchiolitis reduced hospital stays. Hypertonic treatments are commonly used in hospitals and advised for home treatments. Normal saline treatments are popular among those who desire selfadministration, without the need for a prescription. Sterile normal saline for inhalation is a 0.9 percent sodium chloride solution and is sold at pharmacies in single-use vials with twist-off caps easily applied to any nebulizer unit.

There are a few types of nebulizers, ranging in cost from $30-$300. If you need a quiet machine, look for an ultrasonic nebulizer, but make sure your medication works with your machine. For example, Pulmicort may be too thick for ultrasonic devices. Travel nebulizers ensure that you can nebulize privately, without having to plug in your machine. High-quality travel machines can run upwards of $200 but are well worth the cost if you need to nebulize during air travel.

Delivering a fine mist to interior lungs is a precise practice.

Hygienic processes and accurate dosing must become ritual.

Mouthpieces are best cleaned after

every use and replaced every six months. Only use sterile fluids intended for nebulizer equipment.

Wash your hands and keep your working area clean. Watch the chamber for droplets to collect on the sides, then tap them to the base to ensure you have a full dose delivered. After nebulizing, practice deep breathing, cough, and attempt to mobilize and expectorate mucus.

Ask your doctor if you qualify for a prescription for a nebulizer, solutions or medications. Some plans may cover nebulizer solution better than metered dose inhalers, so check to see if there is a cost saving. Albuterol increases heart rate; some report this side effect to be worse using a nebulizer than through a metered-dose inhaler.

Be mindful of allowing for time to adjust after administering Albuterol. If you have chronic or occasional breathing restrictions, consider a saline nebulizer treatment to open your airway for a deep and nourishing breath. Happy New Year! Abundant breathing! Dr. Shellie L. Rosen, DOM, L.Ac.

appy New Year! Each January I write about resolutions we tend to make every year: eating better/ losing weight, exercising more and saving more money always seem to top everyone’s list. Following close behind those top three resolutions are: being kinder to others, using less foul language and limiting technology time (phone, internet, social media and television).

While pondering how to put a new twist on this familiar topic, a song came to mind - “Walking in Rhythm” by The Blackbyrds, a 70’s rhythm and blues band.

The lyrics speak about how

arduous it is to make a long journey home to return to a true love. “It’s been so long since I’ve seen her, I’m tired and so all alone. I’ve traveled so very far, I’ve got to get back home.”

This got me thinking about ways we all can attempt to return to a more stable, harmonious existence with ourselves and others:

• Be kinder to yourself. Don’t beat yourself up over things you can’t control. If life takes you away from what is dear to you, find a way to “get back home.” Mistakes can often be overcome. Look around you and rejoice! We live in New Mexico.

• Work at improving yourself gently. Try a new hobby, a new activity or even a new hairstyle. Become a newer, better version of yourself. Use the “introspectoscope.” and look within. We all have room for progress. This may be the year to take guitar lessons, to improve baking skills, to take

art classes or just pledge to read more.

frequently as long as your heart and kidneys can tolerate it.

• Make time for your family.

We all can benefit from more positive relationships among our partners, siblings, parents and offspring. Relationships keep our live fruitful. Our most cherished moments should be shared with those closest to us. If family isn’t local, call or write them often. New videophones can be a wonderful alternative and allow one to see what is happening in someone else’s world.

• Get adequate sleep. Most Americans are sleep-deprived.

Adults need eight hours of sleep per night. Sleep hygiene is key.

Don’t watch stimulating actionpacked movies or television programs before bed. Try to refrain from exercise at least four hours before your bedtime.

Meditation can be a great segue into sleep.

• Exercise regularly. Ask your health care provider what a reasonable exercise option is for you. Walking is a great way to begin. How can that be accomplished in the winter? Venture out during the warmest part of the day.

Beware of potentially slippery spots like inclines and steps.

Dress in layers and always use sunscreen. If the weather outdoors is frightful, walking indoors can be an option.

Mall-walking and indoor gyms with short tracks can be quite comfortable.

• Eat well. That doesn’t mean to place everything in the refrigerator on your plate.

Nor does it mean to frequent the finest eating establishments that Albuquerque has to offer.

Balance green vegetables with other sources of protein.

Eat healthy fats. Try to limit processed foods and excessive sugar. Some individuals may want to avoid gluten-containing products. Read the labels.

et’s start off the new year by reducing the use of toxic pesticides in society so our children aren’t exposed to them.

Here are some things I recommend.

If you have a pest control company servicing your home, ask them what products they are using. If they are using synthetic pyrethroid pesticides, ask them to switch to EPA exempt pesticides, which are considered safe by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Pesticides with any “signal word,” including “danger,” “warning” or “caution,” are not safe. Keep in mind that most pest control companies will say the pesticides they use are safe.

In reality, most people can do their own pest control at home, without using toxic pesticides. I will help anyone who wants to do this. If you have a service in the winter, put them on hold till spring.

There is no need to spray this time of year.

If you visit any store, commercial establishment or government building routinely, ask if their facilities are regularly sprayed for bugs, and if so, ask what is being used. If they are using toxic pesticides with signal words, then ask them to consider switching to EPA exempt pesticides or to at least notify their customers and visitors before any toxic pesticides are used so you can avoid the building for a few days.

If a commercial establishment refuses to tell you the name of the pesticides used or refuses to post notifications before sprayings, then consider going someplace else. If

it is a government agency, remind them that they are paying for the spraying with taxpayer dollars and that they should consider the health of their constituents over the benefit of their exterminator.

If you see someone spraying herbicides or pesticides on public property near where you live, work or hang out, then stop and ask what they are using and why. For instance, the Roundup product label lists the weeds the herbicide will kill and those it just suppresses. The person applying the product needs to know the identity of the weeds being sprayed and whether they are being killed or merely suppressed. Many applicators will neither be aware of what is being sprayed nor the results of the application.

Also ask them to show you their applicator license. If they refuse and they are with a government agency, report them to their agency

manager. If they are with a pest control company, call their office and offer to consider legal action unless they address your questions.

I believe that if commercial establishments, government agencies and pest control companies know that they are going to be carefully watched, they all may start doing things that are safer for society.

Though nobody is going to drop dead from pesticide exposure, it can build up in your system and cause later problems. The synthetic pyrethroids most companies use can cause children to develop leukemia or lymphoma and can cause pregnant women to have autistic children.
