How To Avoid Electrical Fires

ere’s news that may spark your interest: According to the National Fire Protection Association, electrical failures or malfunctions are factors in some 43,000 home fires a year. Your home, however, can be protected. Here, from the experts at Electrical Safety Foundation International, the premier nonprofit organization dedicated exclusively to promoting electrical safety at home and in the workplace, are tips on how:

Have your home inspected by a licensed electrician every 10 years; sooner if your home is 40 years old or older, if it’s undergone a major renovation or if you’ve added major new appliances lately. In between, check out this checklist.

• Make sure extension cords are properly rated for their intended use, indoor or outdoor, and meet or exceed the power needs of the appliance or device being used.

Switches and Outlets • Are they working? • Do plugs fit snugly? If so, they should be fine for now.

• Inspect cords for cracked, frayed, loose or bare wires, and loose connections.

• Do they make crackling, buzzing or sizzling sounds?

• Never use a cord that feels hot.

• Are they warm to the touch?

• Don’t run extension cords through walls or ceilings. This may cause the cord to overheat, creating a serious fire hazard.

These can be signs of a fire in the wall. Have an electrician check it out right away. Electrical Panel Every home has a service panel that distributes electricity to your home. It’s usually in the basement, garage or utility area. Service panels have fuses or circuit breakers that keep wires from overloading and causing a fire. • Make sure all circuit breakers and fuses are the proper size. • Replace standard circuit breakers with arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs). Damaged or malfunctioning wiring is the leading cause of electrical fires. An arc fault is caused by damaged, overheated or stressed electrical wiring or devices. AFCIs can prevent 50 percent of home fires. Without AFCIs, arc faults may be hidden until it’s too late. Extension Cords Extension cords are a convenient way to provide power right where you need it when working in or around your home, but using them improperly can be dangerous. • Extension cords should be used only on a temporary basis.

Connecting Women To Heart Health Resources And Care

The Awareness Paradox While a new national poll, conducted by Morning Consult for CVS Health, found that women are aware of the risks of heart disease, most don’t know their numbers for factors that could increase their own risk, such as cholesterol, blood sugar, Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference.

Providers across the health care continuum can help individuals access the information, preventive screenings, and condition management support they need to improve heart health outcomes. Most women agree that pharmacists and nurse practitioners are both valuable yet underutilized resources for managing heart health.

The survey also found that more than one in three women have heart-related conditions such as high cholesterol, hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes, and history of stroke or a heart defect.

For example, only half of the 26 percent of women who report concerns about their heart health medication consult their pharmacists, though nearly all of those who do report their pharmacists are helpful.

Despite the fact that over a third report having a heart condition themselves, and more than two in five have a family history of heart conditions, just 18 percent of women overall say heart health is the most pressing health issue in the U.S. today. Doctors’ Advice “This data reinforces what we’ve known for some time—there is still a great need for more awareness and, particularly, action when it comes to prevention of heart disease in women,” said Suzanne Steinbaum, D.O., a preventive cardiologist from New York and a national Go Red For Women volunteer. “Some risk factors, like age, gender and family history, are, unfortunately, out of women’s control, but others—blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and BMI—can be treated or managed. Now is the time for women to take control of their health, and knowing their numbers is a great place to start.” “These survey results offer significant insights into how women across the country perceive heart disease prevalence and the importance of proactive care,” added Troyen A. Such a lifestyle, advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, includes: • Eating a healthy diet—low in saturated fats, trans fat, and cholesterol and high in fiber. • Maintaining a healthy weight—your BMI should be between 18.5 and 25. • Getting enough physical activity-2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate exercise a week. • Not smoking—or using other forms of tobacco. • Limiting alcohol use—no more than two drinks a day for men, one for women, on average. How Women Can Become Better Negotiators To Navigate The Workplace

G

ood negotiating skills are learned over time and, when done well, can provide many benefits. However, new findings from a University of Phoenix survey found that while almost 60 percent of men are comfortable negotiating their salary, only 42 percent of women say the same1. “While women have made great strides to overcome gender inequality in the workplace, not negotiating well can have a significant impact on women’s earnings as they could be leaving additional pay on the table that accumulates over the course of their career,” said McCeil Johnson, senior director and dean of accreditation and regulatory compliance. “In my experience, women already possess many skills that make them natural, effective negotiators, and with practice, can enhance improving their negotiating abilities.” Following are a few tips that women can use to improve their negotiating skills: 1. Know the value of your unique assets: Know your strengths and how your experiences can benefit the organization. Everything you bring to the negotiation table is part of life’s rich tapestry, whether you are fresh out of college, mid-career, male or female—your unique set of circumstances provides leverage for your situation. Observe and tailor your approach based on your situation. 2. Research: Research is an important aspect of the negotiation preparation process. For instance, when negotiating for a job or salary, come prepared with industry assessments of how people with similar experience to yours and for that type of position are compensated and what qualifies them to receive that level of compensation. Also research other benefits such as vacation, working from home or other perks that could be used as a bargaining tool. 3. Practice and get feedback: People underestimate how much preparation is required in negotiating. Develop and review your talking points and practice them with a friend or colleague who can provide honest feedback. 4. Be flexible: Customize the situation based on the people with whom you will be speaking. By learning as much as you can about them and their role within the company, you can assess how they will react to you and how they want you to react to them.

5. Listen: Listening is a critical skill in negotiating. Make sure you hear the offers given to you; the last thing you want to do is talk yourself out of a deal. 6. Be assertive, not aggressive: Tone and presentation are also major factors in negotiating; it is not what you say, but how you say it. Stay calm and present your position thoughtfully. in negotiating, consider the following:

1. Don’t go in blind: Know the desired outcome and find common ground. According to Bruce Patton, co-author of “Getting to Yes,”2 when you create a problem-solving atmosphere in which all parties feel safe to brainstorm options, you secure a win-win outcome in negotiations. Envision the “least restrictive alternative,” which is the minimum you are willing to accept during the negotiation. 2. Don’t get emotional. Showing passion without being overly emotional is a good approach. Practice keeping a steady cadence and tone, and control any tremor in your voice. 3. Don’t get personal. Your manager will give a raise because of your work accomplishments and not because of your personal situations. That means your rent, upcoming mortgage, number of children and the like should not be part of the conversation. Your work and career experience and accomplishments must be the focus. 4. Don’t fidget. Maintain eye contact and sit still. Awkward or sudden movements can make you seem nervous and less confident. 1.
