You Can Get On Track For Retirement

here’s good news for anyone worried about saving for retirement—you already have what it takes to be a smart saver!

A recent survey by AARP and the Ad Council revealed that Americans are getting the most out of every dollar in many areas in their lives, with 92 percent using money-saving hacks like comparison shopping, using coupons, and signing up for customer reward programs.

Yet, fewer Americans have applied this savviness to their retirement savings. Two in five households headed by Americans age 55 to 64 have no assets saved for retirement, according to the National Institute on Retirement Security. Five Hacks To Help You Have Happier Holidays

ou can get the best out of “the most wonderful time of the year” if you heed these smart suggestions:

1. Keep it simple. You don’t have to “do it all.” Opt out of traditions or decorating obligations that make you feel frazzled instead of joyful. Prioritize what’s important to you and give yourself permission to say no.

4. Prioritize quality family time over gifts and perfection. Try to cultivate a holiday season that is less about spending and more about making memories and giving presence as well as presents. Give your kids Christmas traditions to remember. Let go of the pressure to do everything perfectly.

Your Christmas tree doesn’t have to look like a magazine illustration. You don’t need to change your pillows or plates for the season. It’s okay to bring premade food to the class party. Let yourself off the hook for having a picture-perfect Christmas.

2. Start early. Make deadlines for yourself. Set a time to write cards and a time to wrap gifts. Get the kids to help. Let them try their hand at baking, addressing cards or wrapping gifts. It may not be perfect, but it makes them feel important.

3. Be prepared for holiday parties. For most people, the holidays mean spending more time out of our own homes. Keep a couple of bottles of wine on hand for hostess gifts. Grab some coloring books to take along for when the kids get bored. Dark Skies Of Albuquerque Once Again Backdrop For Lights Galore

he clear and dark skies of an Albuquerque winter will be the backdrop once again for lights galore this holiday season. From festive LED displays to luminaria tours, Albuquerque families of all ages can witness wintry wonderlands through the end of the year. Grab your gloves and head out to take in all that twinkles.

• From Dec. 18-24, hop aboard one of the Albuquerque Trolley Company’s cars for their Trolley of Lights tour. The tours begin downtown, wind along Rio Grande, and stretch through Los Ranchos to take visitors through luminaria- and light-filled neighborhoods. • More than 500 individual light displays blanket the Albuquerque Botanic Gardens through Dec. 30 (except for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day). The city’s River of Lights gets better every year, with new creations all the time. Thousands of people stroll through the 36-acre park to take in the animated displays, lighted sculptures and more at the annual holiday light festival. • This year marks the 53rd season for the Old Town Luminaria Tour, which takes place every Christmas Eve. • Every year, Nob Hill hosts Albuquerque’s very own Twinkle Light Parade, complete with floats, marching bands and Santa himself. Bring your cocoa and blankets to set up along the parade route – Central Avenue from Washington to Girard – for great seats to good old-fashioned family fun. This year, the city expects 3,500 participants to dazzle and delight. • The Bugg Lights are the stuff of New Mexico lore. Many locals fondly remember driving through a certain Northeast neighborhood to see one family’s extraordinary light extravaganza. The lights later moved from venue to venue, and the faithful have continued to seek them out for 47 years. For the fourth year, Belen’s Harvey House Museum is home to the legendary and luminous display. The event features 300,000 lights, more than 100 Christmas trees, multiple nativity scenes, plus vintage and homemade Christmas decorations. The museum also hosts food, crafts and music at this free event. (Donations are appreciated and help defray costs as well as assist local charities.) Open every day from 5-9 p.m. through Dec. 30. • A short drive from Albuquerque gives a glimpse of a quieter and more natural kind of light spectacle. Bonfires are also the backdrop for Native American flute music and Native American dancers, and visitors will even find food, carolers and Santa Claus. Take The Chill Off With Green Chile Stew

is the season for comfort food.

Comfort in a bowl for me is green chile stew.

Several years ago, I entered my green chile stew recipe in the New Mexico Chile Cookoff, which consisted of red chile, green chile and salsa categories. My chile didn’t take first place, but I was thrilled to win the second prize out of dozens of contestants.

Folks here are crazy about their chile; it’s a part of our culture. It’s light and can be a meal in itself, or it will compliment any entree. So to celebrate New Mexico’s fiery fixation, here is my recipe for green chile stew.

Liz’s 2nd Place Award-Winning Green Chile Stew Ingredients: -2 plastic bags of frozen, roasted green chile, medium to hot, (about 15 chiles per bag), or 2 containers of frozen green chile from your local grocer. I recommend Bueno Hatch Autumn Roast.

-The meat of your choice (steak, chicken or pork). I usually use sirloin; I like it meaty, and so I use about 1-2 lbs.

-3/4 diced onion 3-4 potatoes. I use white, cut into cubes about a 3/4-inch in diameter. If you use small potatoes, use 4.

-3 cloves garlic, finely chopped

-1 can diced fire roasted tomatoes -1 can low sodium chicken broth -Water to cover ingredients (24 ounces; I fill the broth can twice with water.)

-Salt, to taste -1-2 tablespoons oil (vegetable or olive oil) -1 plus ½ teaspoon garlic powder (approx.)

-1/2 teaspoon onion powder -1 rounded teaspoon Knorr tomate para sopas (This is a powered tomato paste. I’ve made it without this and it works fine).

Directions: Chop the chile; add 1 garlic clove, ½ teaspoon garlic powder and salt. Cut the meat, and season with salt and remaining garlic and onion powder.

Cook meat in the oil. When it’s half cooked (after about 6-7 minutes), add onions and remaining garlic cloves. Cook an additional 5 minutes (until done), then add the chile and canned tomatoes. Cook 5-7 more minutes.

Add the chicken broth, water, garlic powder, Knorr, and salt to taste. (Water should cover the chile and meat about an inch). Bring to boil and cook on high for 7 minutes. Add potatoes. Then lower heat, slightly higher than a simmer, cover with the lid (not completely). Let simmer for about 35-40 minutes.

Medical Device Professional Living With Diabetes Now Uses The Insulin Pump He Helped Get Approved In The U.S.

C

hip Zimliki, 47, had been living with type 1 diabetes for over 33 years and was managing his blood sugar levels with multiple daily injections (MDI). This meant Chip had to give himself a shot of long acting insulin once a day, as well as injections of rapid acting insulin at each mealtime. Having worked at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for eight years, Chip was very familiar with insulin pump therapy and the advancements made to increase automation and create what’s called “hybrid closed loop technology.”

Once at the company, he had early access to try the latest technologies— including the Guardian Sensor 3 continuous glucose monitor (CGM) that’s part of the MiniMed™ 670G system. He was able to get real-time insights into his sugar levels including how they reacted when he ate a meal, how they trended when he woke up in the morning, exercised or experienced stress. “It was really eye opening to see how my body reacted to things throughout the day and it made me realize I wasn’t in the best control of my sugar levels.”

Then one day, Chip had a scare that motivated him to get in better control of his diabetes. He was driving himself in the car when his blood sugar suddenly dropped really low. He experienced what doctors call severe hypoglycemia. He felt dizzy and had to pull over to the side of the road so he wouldn’t lose control of the car. That experience left him thinking about his wife Lindsay and two young children Lyla, 4, and Leo, 5. As a parent, he felt a tremendous responsibility to keep his children safe and that was enough for him to transition to insulin pump therapy. “It was the tipping point for me—there’s nothing more important than keeping your family safe.”

ccording to the American Medical Association (AMA), about one in four new prescriptions is never filled, and about half the time patients don’t take the medications they do have.

The Problem People give eight basic reasons for not complying, the AMA adds: 1. Fear. People may be frightened of potential side effects. They may have witnessed side effects experienced by someone else who was taking the same or a similar medication and believe the medication caused the problems.

2. Cost. People may ration what they have to extend their supply.

3. Misunderstanding. People may not understand the need for the medicine, the nature of the side effects or the time it will take to see results.

This is particularly true for those with chronic illness, because taking a medication every day to reduce the risk of something bad happening can be confusing. Failure to see immediate improvement may lead to premature discontinuation.

4. Too many medications. The greater the number of different medicines prescribed and the higher the dosing frequency, the more likely someone is to not take some or any.

5. Lack of symptoms. People who don’t feel any different when they start or stop their medicine might see no reason to take it.

6. Worry. Concerns about becoming dependent on a medication can also lead to nonadherence.

7. Depression. People suffering from depression are less likely to take their medications as prescribed.

8. Mistrust. Some people are suspicious of their doctor’s motives for prescribing certain medications because of stories about pharmaceutical companies influencing physician prescribing patterns.

Rock Steady Boxing for Parkinson’s Disease

here are more than 50 published evidence-based studies that attest to the benefits of exercise to improve daily living for persons with Parkinson’s disease. The studies range from examining fitness programs necessary for things like household chores to more advanced fitness levels needed to ski, play golf or hike.

My personal favorite of the many published exercise methods is a program that has boxing as the core feature. Rock Steady Boxing is noncontact boxing and cross-training combined. Boxing may seem like a surprising exercise for women and men who struggle with balance and have motor coordination issues. However, the individuals taking the classes overcome many of their movement disorders when they start punching a heavy bag.

Studies of boxing, an activity that involves rapid movements in different planes and uses the right and left side of the brain and body, show remarkable benefits to slow Parkinson’s symptoms. And it improves the ability to perform everyday functional activities like cleaning or fun activities like gardening. Research shows that people who exercise harder (within rea-
