Gifts That Teachers Really Want

M

any parents, students and others are glad to learn there’s an easy way to give teachers a truly meaningful gift for the holidays, at the end of term or for Teacher Appreciation Week. The non-profit AdoptAClassroom.org makes it simple to donate to your favorite teacher.

An Answer Fortunately, an answer is at hand. AdoptAClassroom.org provides teachers with an online platform to crowdfund for classroom materials. Making a donation to a teacher’s AdoptAClassroom.org account is a lot like giving a gift card for school supplies (according to the National Retail Federation, gift cards are at the top of 61 percent of surveyed people’s holiday wish list this year) but with a wider selection of stores from which to shop. “Receiving funds through AdoptAClassroom.org is much better han receiving a gift card to a specific store,” said math teacher Jennifer Cummings. “AdoptAClassroom.org gives me the freedom to shop online with a variety of stores and when it’s convenient for me.”

The Need Consider this: U.S. teachers spend an average of $600 out of their own pockets each year to ensure each student has the school supplies they need to succeed—one in five teachers spends more than $1,000. With part of the school year already past, many teachers need to replenish the dwindling inventory of classroom supplies and materials for their students. This puts an added financial burden on teachers during the holiday season.
