Be aware of blood pressure risks with over-the-counter pain relievers

ccording to the American Heart Association, the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, more than half of U.S. adults have high blood pressure, a leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke. However, a new poll from the Association revealed only about one-third (30%) of adults have talked with their health care professional about the effect some over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers can have on blood pressure.

If you have high blood pressure, ask your health care professional – such as a doctor, nurse or pharmacist – about monitoring your blood pressure at home with a validated device, and discuss the impact of any over-thecounter medications. Some medicines, such as over-the-counter pain relievers and decongestants, oral birth control, amphetamines and others may raise blood pressure, according to the American Heart Association’s most recent Guideline for the Prevention, Detection, Evaluation and Management of High Blood Pressure. The poll, conducted online for the American Heart Association by market research firm Big Village, surveyed approximately 3,000 U.S. adults aged 18 and older. Overall, 61% of those polled had not discussed the effects of some overthe-counter pain relievers on blood pressure with a health care professional.

How Americans Plan to Spend and Save this Holiday Season

Of those who plan to make budgeting a goal, 66.7% have already started evaluating their overall 2024 financial budget as of October 1, 2023. Americans are also planning long-term. For those looking to manage their finances and make the holidays a little less taxing monetarily, Rocket Money can help users track spending and create budgets.
With festivities fast approaching, Rocket Money surveyed 2,000 U.S. adults celebrating this year to find out how they prepare financially for the season. Gen X leads the holiday spending spree, while Gen Z prefers in-person shopping When asked about budgeting for the season, nearly three out of five U.S. adults report setting a budget. The study found that Gen X plans to spend the most money, with an average budget of $717 for holiday gifts, décor, entertainment and more. Meanwhile, Gen Z plans to spend the least with $591 total but set the highest amount for all generations when it came to holiday décor.

Forging a Path: Women Welders “It is not for the faint of heart,” Erica Bridges said. Bridges is a Welding Technology student at Texas State Technical College (TSTC). She was referring to her field of study and to welding in general. “I encourage it, though,” she added. “This is a really good money-making (career). The people that you will meet, they’re just one-of-a-kind people.” In the heavily male-dominated industry of welding, only 5.1% of the workers are female, according to a 2022 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report. In the fall 2023 semester, TSTC had a total of 94 women and 970 men enrolled in Welding Technology. “It’s hard,” she said. “I mean, it’s hot all the time. I’m sweating from the minute I walk into the shop in the morning until I leave in the evening.
