Time Is Running Out: Seven Last-Minute Tips For Medicare Open Enrollment

T

he last day of Medicare’s Annual Election Period (AEP) is this Friday, December 7. eHealthMedicare outlines seven things all Medicare enrollees should know about their open enrollment choices.

Prepaid copy copy provided Prepaid providedby:by: TheTime Health City Sun llc. 2012 Prime Publishing 2018

1. Get motivated. This open enrollment period comes around only once per year. Whether you’re currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan or are looking to sign up for the first time, it’s important to compare your plan options by December 7th. Make sure your Medicare insurance coverage will still meet your needs for 2019. 2. Take control of change. Every year, insurers make changes to plan details. Your current plan may be changing your out-of-pocket costs, the doctors you can see, or your covered drugs. You have a once-a-year opportunity to take control of these changes by shopping your options to ensure you end up with the best plan for your needs. 3. Make sure your preferred doctors are covered. Check to make sure the doctors, clinics, pharmacies and hospitals you want to use are still covered under your current plan, as well as any new plan you may consider. You can find doctor network information when shopping online, but call your doctor to confirm his or her network status before enrolling. 4. Make sure your prescription drugs are covered. Will your current plan still cover the drugs you need next year? Online tools can help you see which plans include your drugs on their formulary at the lowest out-of-pocket cost. People using the drug coverage comparison tool at www.eHealthMedicare.com last year, for example, found an average of $611 per year in potential savings.

5. Compare services among plans. Online Medicare marketplaces offer easy-to-use comparison tools and plan recommendations. In an instant, you can compare plans side by side to review the price and benefits offered, including preferred pharmacies and mail-order prescription discounts, dental, vision, hearing and fitness benefits. Some plans offer benefits and perks that others do not, but little differences can make all the difference when it comes to your satisfaction with your coverage. 6. Get personal help when you need it, shop online when you don’t. Beyond online comparison tools and plan recommendations, fullservice Medicare marketplaces offer you a phone number to talk with a licensed agent for more personalized help when you need it. Also look for a Better Business Bureau accreditation seal and check that the company running the website is officially approved by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). 7. You’re not locked in to last-minute Medicare Advantage choices. If you choose a Medicare Advantage plan by December 7, and later realize a different plan would better fit your needs, you’ll have a chance to reconsider your selection early next year during the new Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment period, which runs from January 1 through March 31, 2019. -(NAPSI)

Why It’s Wise To Hire Veterans With Disabilities ”Today, nearly 4 million Americans have a service-connected disability. At a time when many employers are struggling to fill positions, hiring veterans with disabilities can boost diversity and inclusion efforts,” explained Jeff Hall, national employment director for DAV (Disabled American Veterans). For example, Dave Ellis found it difficult to get a job after receiving an honorable discharge from the Army. “I had a severe back injury, but I also carried mental scars from active duty,” he said. After six months of searching, he was able to find a supportive company that understands and values the traits that come from military training, including job-ready skills, tested leadership abilities and a mission-focused work ethic. For others, however, it can be a struggle. In fact, a survey in The Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation found that 57 percent of veterans with disabilities transitioning to the civilian workforce feared hiring discrimination due to their disability. “The reality is that many of America’s businesses, big and small alike, recognize the importance of hiring veterans with disabilities, but often don’t know where to begin,” added Hall. To address this need, DAV has published “The Veteran Advantage: DAV Guide to Hiring and Retaining Veterans with Disabilities.” This free, comprehensive guide is the result of more than four years of study about what the veteran community contributes to the workforce and how

hiring veterans, especially disabled ones, can improve a company’s bottom line. The 36-page publication, which can be downloaded at http://dav.la/jobs, offers best practices and helpful tools for employers. But it goes further, helping to correct misperceptions and inspire more organizations to hire from this talent pool. Content includes statistics about veterans with disabilities, in-depth onboarding and retention strategies, a practical checklist for employers, and explanations of financial incentives, tax credits and other support. The Guide also highlights powerful testimonials of veterans thriving in successful careers, and case studies from employers who benefit from having disabled veterans in their workplace. Nationally respected companies such as First Data and USAA apply the findings within their own internal human resources departments and hiring teams. There are also free and helpful resources that veterans themselves can take advantage of to help with the transition into a civilian career. For example, DAV holds free career fairs throughout the country for veterans and their spouses. Details are available at http://dav.la/jobs. “While our nation’s veterans, particularly those who have been injured in service, are faced with unique challenges, they also offer the skill sets, loyalty and dedication needed to help successfully power America’s economy,” said Hall. -(NAPSI)

Happiness And How Couples Spend

Q

uicken, maker of the best-selling personal finance software in the U.S., recently surveyed over 1,000 married adults to get a picture of their spending habits over the holidays—and to find out if spending impacts their relationship happiness. Do you spend what I spend? The majority of couples (nearly 70 percent) say they agree on holiday spending levels. Some observations about those who set (or didn’t set) spending limits: Spending limits and happiness go hand in hand People who discuss and agree on holiday spending report being happier with the amount their spouse spends on them. For those who agree on limits, 78 percent are happy with how much their spouse spends. That number drops when couples don’t agree on holiday spending limits; 63 percent of those who don’t set a limit say they’re happy with the amount spent on them. People who did not set spending limits are twice as likely to wish their spouse had spent more on them (24 percent) than those who did (10 percent). Setting limits is one thing—telling the truth is another Nearly half (47 percent) of the people who said they set a limit have

deceived their spouse about how much they spent on gifts. The vast majority of those white lies were told by people who spent more than the stated limit on a gift for their love: Eighty-one percent said they spent more on their spouse than they agreed to. Putting the “me” in merry If you splurged on something for yourself while you were shopping for others, don’t feel bad: Nearly a third (28 percent) of people say they spend more on themselves during the holiday season than they do on their spouse. Making a list and checking it twice may not be enough One in five have forgotten completely to get a holiday gift for their spouse. Turns out, forgetting a gift takes a big toll on relationship satisfaction. Those who have forgotten a gift report a 18.5 percent dip in relationship satisfaction from those who never have. So, this holiday season, consider talking to your spouse about holiday spending plans, checking your list twice, and perhaps grabbing a gift for yourself while you’re at it. Hints For Keeping Your Friends Happy

P

icking just the right presents for your friends while looking like a blooming genius at gift giving time can be easier than many people realize. A company that’s been trusted for more than 40 years to deliver smiles has new, truly original gifts available this holiday season, as well as tried-and-true treasures, all designed to surprise and delight. Consider these beauties: Santa’s Surprise A great gift doesn’t have to take up a great deal of room. Consider The Night Before Christmas Holiday Flower Tree®, for instance: Even if they already have a full-size Tannenbaum to gather ‘round, your friends might get a big kick out of this small(er) tree, potted in a charming planter that looks like a certain jolly ol’ elf’s midsection. It makes a terrific table-topper for the holiday-and it can be planted outdoors once Rudolph and the rest head back north. Sweet And Sassy Succulents If unconventional festivity is more their style, a quartet of minisucculents in magnetic pots might be just the decor they’re looking for. A variety of succulents-already adorable-is potted with fresh moss in magnet-backed, metallic “ornaments” in red, silver, bronze or gold. Give all four to one friend or give one to each of four different friends. There’s also a trio of succulents in charming ceramic containers with

W

inspirational messages such as “dig it” and “I will survive.” (The only thing trendier than succulents is succulents in punny planters.) Fabulous Food As many have discovered, 1-800-Flowers.com isn’t just flowers. With such sister brands as Harry & David, Cheryl’s Cookies and The Popcorn Factory, there’s nearly no end to the tasteful, tasty gifts to be found and sent. For example, Simply Chocolate Holiday Cheer Confections Tin has gourmet goodies to sweeten anyone’s season including a (reusable) silver gift tin of milk chocolate caramel pecan clusters, dark chocolate almond bark, chocolate pretzels, and dark chocolate nonpareils, as well as a giant chocolate peanut butter cup. After all, holidays should be delicious. Traditional Tulips Finally, for the friends who like to keep it classic, there’s a bouquet of tulips-not just happy, and not merely merry, but absolutely jolly in bold red and brilliant white. A full 15 fresh blooms gathered from floral farms make for a memorable yuletide delivery, especially if you send the flowers with a whimsical Santa vase or a plush red-nosed reindeer-in a scarf. Bringing Families Together Around The World

ith all the sad stories of conflict and desperation from around the world, it can be heartening to hear of loved ones reunited.

every year. As the world’s largest humanitarian network, Red Cross and Red Crescent teams help reconnect families separated by international crises.

Here are just two of the happy examples: • Lydia spent months wondering if her daughter Odette was alive. Conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo forced Lydia to seek asylum in the U.S., leaving her far away from her family and with a heavy heart. With the help of the Red Cross, Lydia located her daughter and sent her a message through the Restoring Family Links (RFL) program. Odette responded to her mom—she was indeed alive. “I don’t know how the Red Cross managed to connect me with someone who I thought was dead. There was no other way for me to talk to her. There was no other way.” • Conflict in Burundi forced Fidele to flee and lose touch with his loved ones, including his father. After living in Tucson, Arizona, for some time, he connected with the Red Cross RFL program to open up a search for his father to help give him peace of mind. After months of searching, Fidele finally received the welcome message: His father was alive and well. Armed conflict, international disasters and migration leave millions of people around the globe in urgent need of humanitarian assistance

How It Works Red Cross Restoring Family Links services are free and confidential and help reconnect loved ones when: 1. Families are separated as a result of disaster, migration or other humanitarian emergency. 2. Families have already tried normal channels of communication to reconnect. 3. The family member making the inquiry is able to provide essential information on the sought person. 4. The family member making the inquiry is a relative who had been in direct contact with the sought person before the crisis occurred. The key risk factors for prediabetes include being overweight, being physically inactive, having a parent or sibling with type 2 diabetes, or being over 40 years old. An Urgent Message More than 84 million Americans have prediabetes, and the number of adults diagnosed with diabetes has more than tripled over the past 20 years. Type 2 diabetes prevention is such an urgent need for our nation that two leading health organizations, the American Medical Association (AMA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), have partnered with the Ad Council to raise national awareness. Together, they have built resources that help people know their risk and learn how to reverse prediabetes. 63¢ / line for first week
