Lawmakers Agree: Naturopathic Doctors Are A Solid Choice To Combat Chronic Pain For Veterans

t’s a fact: Many patients now prefer to use integrative health care approaches, especially to treat chronic pain. This trend has given licensed naturopathic doctors (NDs) even greater leverage to push for veterans and others who suffer from chronic pain to have access to the full range of treatments—and physicians.

Members of Congress have made clear their interest in licensed NDs becoming employed by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). It won’t be long. The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians is working to clarify the role NDs would play within the VHA. The Agency’s Office of Patient Centered Care and Cultural Transformation is taking the lead, as the bridge between conventional doctors and more holistic practitioners.

Check the stats: According to a 2015 national survey, 64 percent of veterans would prefer their doctor prescribe natural therapies before drugs or surgery—and 73 percent would consider seeing an ND if staffed at the VHA.* Moreover, the focus on disease prevention provided by naturopathic care—especially in chronic and stress—related illnesses-has been

found to reduce the cost of seeing a specialist by 30 percent.

A

ccording to a recent report by IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics, which tracks the pharmaceutical industry, Americans spend about $424 billion a year on prescription drugs—and the prices for many of them seem to keep on rising.

An Answer Fortunately, many over-the-counter (OTC) drugs can be much more affordable than their prescription counterparts. Easing people’s fiscal as well as their physical pain is an OTC pain patch that uses lidocaine, a medicine that has been clinically proven.

Why Your Attic Is Key to Pre-Winter Roof Check-Ups

here’s no need to risk breaking your neck this autumn when you’ve got a perfectly good attic.

the ceiling, walls and floors. All signal that H2O is finding its way beneath your roof’s shingles or behind its flashings. * Ventilation. “Think of the attic as the lungs of the house,” advises Joplin. “It has to be able to breathe in order to function properly.” Which is to say, vents stuffed with debris need to be cleared. * Animal damage. You know those “If you see something, say something” homeland security ads? Well, to avoid the havoc refuge-seeking birds, bats, squirrels and raccoons can create, warning bells should likewise sound -- followed by a call to a pest-control pro -- if you spot any of these telltale signs: nests, droppings and gnawed wood, wires or insulations. * Structural problems. The mere hint of a sagging roof -- look up for this one -- could indicate potential structural weakness requiring professional repair.

ost homes that require heat rely on furnaces or heat pumps to circulate warm air throughout the house. Knowing which piece of equipment is right for your home isn’t always easy.
