Become a CFP® Professional and Give Back Through Pro Bono Financial Planning

Nearly 9 in 10 Americans are concerned about the current cost of living in the United States, which has created an increasing need for the trusted, often life-changing advice of CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professionals. Alongside their paid work helping people plan their financial futures, thousands of CFP® professionals across the country have chosen to “give back” with pro bono financial planning. If you like helping others, consider a career as a CFP® professional — a career where serving those in need is encouraged.

Changing Lives. Making a Difference.

Last year, CFP® professionals provided more than a quarter-million hours of free, no-strings-attached financial advice to those in need, such as domestic violence survivors, widows, wounded veterans, immigrants, cancer patients and others. This pro bono financial planning significantly impacts the lives of financially vulnerable Americans. Recognizing the substantial demand for assistance, CFP Board recently passed a resolution encouraging CFP® professionals to commit to a minimum of 20 hours per year of pro bono work. Choosing a career as a CFP® professional means embracing a culture of service.

Get Involved: Pro Bono Volunteering

Encouraging pro bono service is part of CFP Board’s commitment to expanding access to competent and ethical financial planners. With more than 97,000 CFP® professionals in the United States, CFP Board has access to an immense potential supply of pro bono volunteers. And CFP Board has partnered with the Foundation for Financial Planning (FFP) to connect CFP® professionals with people in need. FFP is an independent charitable organization solely focused on expanding pro bono services in the financial planning profession.

FFP helps CFP® professionals link up with nonprofit organizations seeking pro bono assistance for their constituents through its national volunteer opportunity clearinghouse: www.ProBonoPlannerMatch.org. More than 115 nonprofit organizations use the website to post volunteer opportunities for CFP® professionals.

Gear Up for Respiratory Virus Season

Here’snews to help you breathe easier: Although respiratory virus season is upon us, you can protect yourself and your loved ones. How? Make sure you’re up to date on all of your vaccinations. Following vaccination, it takes time for your body to build protection against the flu, COVID-19 and RSV, so it’s recommended that you get the vaccines you’re eligible for as soon as possible to support your health and the health of your community.

Vaccinations help prevent the flu, COVID-19 and RSV

Getting a flu shot is the best way to protect yourself and your family from the flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends getting vaccinated early in the fall, before flu season begins, ideally before the end of October. It’s especially important to protect at-risk populations—adults 65 and older, those with certain immunocompromising or chronic medical conditions, infants or children under 5 and pregnant women—from severe illness.

The CDC also confirmed that you can receive any of the currently authorized COVID-19 and RSV vaccines at the same time as the flu vaccine. It’s recommended that adults 60 or older get an RSV vaccination as they’re at greater risk for serious complications from RSV because immune systems weaken with age. CVS Pharmacy is also now administering the updated COVID-19 vaccine, recently authorized by the FDA and recommended by the CDC.

Seniors have additional options when it comes to vaccinations

Seniors are at a greater risk of developing severe illnesses from flu, COVID-19 and RSV, and according to a CVS Health consumer survey, of those who indicated they plan to get vaccinated, seniors are the demographic most likely to do so (74% of seniors). CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic offer specific CDC-recommended offerings for seniors aged 65 and above, which include:

• Fluad: An adjuvanted influenza vaccine that helps the body elicit a better immune response.

• Fluzone HD: A high-dose vaccine that contains four times the antigen as the regular flu vaccine and is intended to create a stronger immune response for seniors.

• An RSV vaccine for adults 60 and older with greater risk for serious complications from RSV because immune systems weaken with age.

Common flu shot myths

• Myth: You should wait until flu season peaks to get the vaccine.

• Fact: It’s best to be vaccinated before flu begins spreading in your community—ideally in September or October.

• Myth: The flu shot gives you the flu.

• Fact: Flu shots are made of either inactivated viruses or with proteins from the flu virus—so you can’t get the flu from the vaccine.

• Myth: The flu is only spread by coughing and sneezing.

• Fact: Flu viruses are largely spread this way, but a person might also get the flu by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose or eyes. That’s why you should wash your hands frequently with soap and water or an alcohol-based cleanser.

A one-stop shop for your vaccine needs this fall

At CVS Pharmacy, you can conveniently schedule a flu shot and COVID-19 vaccine in the same appointment for yourself and your family via digital scheduling through CVS.com or the CVS Pharmacy app. Walk-in appointments are available for people of all ages, seven days per week, with evening and weekend hours. Anyone who receives a CDC-recommended vaccine through the end of the year will get a $5 off $20 in-store CVS Pharmacy coupon.

HPV vaccination is cancer prevention for your kids

Asa board-certified infectious disease pediatrician, I talk to parents all the time about the importance of HPV vaccination. More importantly, I am also a parent of two great kids. My son, who just turned 11, got his HPV vaccine. Why was it so important to us to do this now? To put it simply, the HPV vaccine prevents HPV-related cancers. The last few years have been a struggle for us all to catch up with our regular busy routines. But HPV vaccination can’t wait. We all need to protect our kids now, and here’s why: HPV vaccination is cancer prevention.

If parents of my patients have any questions about HPV vaccination when it’s time for their daughter or son to receive the vaccine, I always reassure them that a whole generation has already received this lifesaving vaccine. We have more than 15 years of data to confirm that the HPV vaccine is safe and has already prevented so many HPV infections and actual precancers. I tell them just how important this vaccine really is, and why I didn’t wait when it was time for my own son and daughter to get it on their 11th birthdays. More than 90% of HPVrelated cancers that occur every year could be prevented by routine HPV vaccination. If I can prevent my kids from having any type of cancer later

in life, I will.

As a pediatrician and mom, I got both my son and daughter vaccinated.

I chose to protect my daughter and son by getting them vaccinated against HPV as soon as they were 11 years old. My 13-year-old daughter already completed her two-dose series, and my 11-year-old son just received his first dose this year. Before his appointment, he and I talked about the vaccine. He was a little worried that it was going to hurt. But he was a trooper the day of his visit and told me that getting “the shot was definitely worth it, because not getting cancer is a really good thing.”

Protect your kids.

As a pediatrician, I know that the HPV vaccine is safe and effective cancer prevention. It’s recommended for girls and boys at age 11 or 12.

Talk to your kids about the importance of this lifesaving vaccine and schedule HPV vaccination at their next visit. As a parent, I made sure that my kids are vaccinated now to protect them later.

There are Many Options Today to Become a Homeowner

Despite increased interest rates and inventory challenges, you can still be a homeowner this year.

Many first-time homebuyers may not realize that there are many ways to make home ownership happen, and not all of them involve a 20% down payment.

The need to put down 20% of the cost of a home is a general misconception according to Freedom Mortgage, a residential mortgage lender with experience originating conventional, FHA and VA loans. They are an independent, non-bank, full-service, residential lender whose mission is to expand opportunities for first-time homebuyers, especially military personnel and consumers with low down payments.

One secret to securing a successful loan is to work with a loan officer who is experienced in the wide range of available home loans, especially those backed by the U.S. government. That way, homebuyers are aware of all potential financing opportunities and companies who offer those options. A good loan officer will walk you through the process and find a loan that works for your budget. Remember—even if your credit history is less than stellar, or if your resources for a down payment are limited, owning a home is still within reach.

Government-insured loans for first-time homebuyers that don’t require a 20% down payment include:

VA loans. If you are a Veteran—either active military or retired—you may be eligible for a VA purchase loan through the federal government with no down payment.

FHA loans. A Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loan allows for lower rates, flexible credit terms, and low minimum down payments (approximately 3.5%). FHA loans are designed for individuals with lower credit scores (minimum 550) and can be used for refinancing, too.

USDA loans. United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) loans help

people seeking to buy homes in rural (and some suburban) areas. USDA loans are not available everywhere, but they are an option in many states. Benefits include competitive interest rates and, in many cases, no down payments. USDA loans have no limits on the loan, and low mortgage guarantee fees. The minimum credit score is 620.

For homebuyers with good credit and finances, a conventional loan may be a good bet, because these loans allow you to finance a wider range of houses than other mortgage types do. Conventional loans also may allow you to borrow more money to finance a more expensive home.

The bottom line is that home ownership can—and should—be available to everyone. A lender such as Freedom Mortgage can help identify the best loan that lets you purchase a home sooner and start to build wealth through home equity.

All Things Duct Cleaning

There may be a problem lurking in your house that you can’t even see: dirty ducts. But that doesn’t have to be.

The Issue

Even with the proper use of filters, your home’s heating and cooling system gets really dirty through normal, everyday use, just as surfaces in your home get dusty over time.

All sorts of contaminants and air pollutants— bacteria, pet dander, dust, skin cells, mold, tobacco smoke, even chemicals—get pulled into an HVAC system and recirculate through the home several times a day, building up in the system.

Worse, rodents and insects can chew their way into the ductwork to travel throughout your home, build nests and leave droppings. Telltale signs include chewed materials, unpleasant smells, and bacteria contaminating the air you breathe.

All this can contribute to poor indoor air quality and major health issues, especially for those with respiratory conditions, autoimmune disorders, asthma, or allergies. The EPA says poor indoor air increases your risk of pneumonia and causes irritated eyes, nose, and throat, headaches, dizziness, and fatigue.

In addition, when the system is clean, it doesn’t have to work as hard so it lasts longer and uses less energy, lowering electric bills.

A Second Issue

Getting your ducts cleaned, however, can mean another problem: Scams. The HVAC system cleaning industry is plagued with fraudulent “duct cleaners” who cause more harm than good by agitating rather than removing

dust, debris, and pollutants or who charge for unneeded add-on services.

A Solution

Fortunately, you can trust the members of the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA). They have technicians on staff with advanced training and certification in HVAC system cleaning, and they’re required to follow higher standards.
