f you’re wondering how to finance your startup, you’re not alone. Depending on your business, financing it can either be relatively simple, such as drawing on your personal savings, or more complex, perhaps requiring you to seek loans or investors.
Here are some common ways to finance a business, along with pros and cons to keep in mind:
In the digital age, many small businesses can be up and running with little to almost no capital, which can make financing your business with your own money more realistic.
Personally financing your business has some distinct advantages— you retain full control over your company, take on zero debt and have no loan payments to worry about.
On the flip side, you could lose money if the business doesn’t work out.
The bottom line is that if you’re willing to take on personal financial risk, using your own money is one of the most straightforward methods of funding your startup, while maintaining full control.
Help from friends and family is another common method for financing a business. This could look similar to personal financing or a private loan.
The advantages depend on the terms of the contributions. You might retain full control over your company and not have to take on debt or you may have to relinquish some control and agree to repay what you’ve received plus interest.
Banks and credit unions are another financing option. However, you’re taking on debt and will need to make regular payments on the loan, which can cut into cash flow. On the plus side, financing your business with a loan means that you retain full control of your company.
Be prepared to show a bank a business plan, expense sheets and financial projections, often for the first five years.
Securing a bank loan is a challenging process. A mentor can help you prepare a loan application, so you have the best chance of securing the loan you need.
Bring in an Outside Investor
Bringing in an outside investor is typically not a realistic option for most businesses. The experts at SCORE found that only about 2% of businesses have a business model that would interest investors.
Most often, equity investors require not only a percentage of ownership in the company but an “exit plan”— otherwise known as your plan for how they’ll recoup their investment and see a healthy return.
With an investor, though, you get relatively quick access to capital without periodic loan payments, potential access to business expertise, and connections you might lack.
If your startup requires a significant capital investment, bringing in an outside investor may be a smart option.
Once considered an unconventional way to finance your business, crowdfunding is now a common method for raising startup funds.
The structure of a crowdfunding campaign depends on your platform host.
The idea is to encourage small contributions from a large pool of people. Funders receive gifts for their support which usually includes the product or service you sell.
The downside to crowdfunding: it takes a lot of effort and money and failure is very public, unlike with private ventures.
Choosing the Right Financing Option is Key
As you develop your startup, connect with a SCORE mentor. They can guide you toward the right financing options for your needs and lead you on the pathway to success.

Before you spring into action cleaning your home this season, you may want to consider a source of dirt you can’t see but do need to deal with: air ducts.
Your home’s heating and cooling system is the lungs of your home. The system pulls air from your rooms; filters, heats or cools it; and sends it back out again.
As a result, dust motes, dander, smoke, pollen and anything else in the air gets stuck in the ductwork. This can be serious for allergy and asthma sufferers, as well as young children and the elderly.
Fortunately, there can be an easy answer. The experts at the National Air

Since government pandemic assistance programs have largely come to an end, fraudsters have turned their attention back to developing increasingly clever ways to trick you into giving them your money—but you can protect yourself and your assets.
Here are two confidence schemes that have been trending in recent months:
•Malicious Links: Bad actors text a link that appears to be from a legitimate company. Even if you don’t provide any information, clicking on the link can lead to malicious software or viruses on your phone.
•Spoofing: Fraudsters attempt to steal personal information by pretending to be someone with an urgent request—these bad actors often pose as government agents or fraud investigators from your bank.
In both scenarios, the goal of the bad actors is to trick the customer into providing personal information as well as bank account and login details that will let the fraudster take over the account and empty it using various peer-to-peer payment services or wires. Since the bad actors have personal information and the bank account login details, they are able to pose as the customer and confirm that they want to send money. In the case of the impostor phone call, the scammer will often trick the customer into sending them money to “resolve fraudulent activity” while speaking with them on the phone.
The experts at Citi suggest the Top 3 Tips to help you avoid these types of fraud:
1.Scammers Have Learned How to Spell: Don’t assume that all scammers misspell or use obvious email addresses and URLs, or make requests that you send money to a faraway land to claim a lost fortune. Today’s fraudsters send emails and text links that closely imitate those from real companies or other trusted individuals and that may appear to be legitimate.
2.Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Messages: Be aware of seemingly real emails, texts and phone calls that ask you to urgently provide personal or account information. These tricks are especially successful when people are distracted by their busy lives. Don’t click on a link from any email or text that you receive unexpectedly and delete unsolicited incoming emails and texts. Additionally, don’t provide any personal identifying or account information to any inbound communication by phone, email or text. Contact your bank or the merchant directly via known and trusted communication channels if you are concerned about an account that is the subject of an unsolicited or suspicious message.
3.Don’t Take the Call—Make the Call: If you get a call from an unknown number, don’t answer it or return it. Instead, reach out directly to your bank by logging in to its secure website or by calling the known customer service number from the back of your card to review account activity and information. Even if you get a call from a number which appears on caller ID as your bank’s name and number, do not provide personal information on that inbound call as fraudsters can easily spoof the incoming caller ID information.
Cyber-enabled fraud is very lucrative and bad actors work around the clock, using sophisticated algorithms that enable them to set up convincing confidence schemes that will trick you into giving away your credentials, your identity, even your life savings. Be vigilant to avoid taking the bait.

“To say we were disorganized is putting it mildly.”
Like so many Americans, they didn’t have a plan for their money.
The problem is often not how much money a family makes, but that they have no idea what they’re spending it on. Seventy-eight percent of full-time workers say they live paycheck to paycheck, according to a recent report from CareerBuilder. Worse, most feel it will always be that way. But it doesn’t have to be.
Financial experts agree that the best way to break the vicious cycle of scrambling to make ends meet is by having a written budget and sticking to it. Leslie heard about a website, EveryDollar.com and the EveryDollar budgeting app that makes it simple to create a budget, manage money, and track spending. They signed up, set up their budget, and they’ve stuck to it for years. “We paid off $165,000 in debt since we got started. Now we’re in a position to be completely debt-free, including our house and rental property, in the next three years.”
The “B” word has gotten a bad rap. Budgeting sounds hard. It sounds restricting. Frankly, it sounds boring. But people who’ve made budgeting the center of their financial behavior have discovered quite the opposite. The technology behind apps like EveryDollar make budgeting easy. Rather
than feeling restricted, they say it feels as if they have permission to spendjust not permission to waste.
Sierra Schmidt was surprised by how much having a budget changed her attitude. She’s a single mother in Spokane, Washington, whose bills include daycare, rent, and student loans. “I felt so far behind every month, and things seemed hopeless,” she says.
“Now, I keep track of every dollar, and the numbers are right in front of me. I’m getting ahead instead of falling behind. Every month I feel more confident that I can wipe out the debt that’s been so stressful.”
Sierra and Leslie empowered themselves to take control of their money. You can too. Creating a budget and sticking to it could change your life and help you take control of your money in the new year.
EveryDollar is a free budget app that allows users to create customized monthly budgets, and seamlessly track expenses, income and savings from the convenience of their computer and phone. It’s available for both iOS and Android devices. EveryDollar launched in March 2015 and now has more than three million users.

The weightlessness of a water environment allows individuals with a range of injuries or disabilities to exercise, relax, have fun, and gain confidence. Children and adults with challenges including traumatic brain injuries, amputation, spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, and blindness can enjoy the physical and psychological benefits of scuba diving.
Diveheart, a nonprofit organization founded in 2001, trains thousands of volunteers and works with injured and disabled individuals across the world, in areas including the United States, Mexico,UK, Malaysia, Israel, Philippines and the Caribbean.
As Darrell Young, a Vietnam veteran who is paraplegic as the result of a spinal cord injury, explains in a testimonial on the Diveheart website, “Diving gives me a high expectancy of myself. It gives me a goal to accomplish knowing that when it comes to the finish line it doesn’t matter how I finish my dive, but the feeling of strength I gain from diving,” he says.
Diveheart relies on volunteers and donations to help provide adaptive diving and scuba therapy experiences at no cost to the participants. Most of the initial training and first diving experiences occur in school or community pools. Participants don’t even need to know how to swim to benefit from therapeutic scuba diving, and the learning curve is almost immediate, according to Diveheart’s website details.
Diveheart works to spread the word that diving is a real option with many
benefits for the individuals affected with injuries and for the volunteers who get involved as “dive buddies.” The basic experience of being in the water with the support of a trained “dive buddy” can relieve pain, improve focus, and bring joy, according to Diveheart participants.
Diveheart also provides adaptive dive training for those who want to take the next step and become adaptive divers or dive buddies to help others.
Most Diveheart participants are eager for destination scuba-diving adventures once individuals are trained and comfortable with the scuba experience. Diveheart offers opportunities for fundraising and also works to find grants for those who struggle with the cost of a dive getaway.
In addition, Diveheart works with the science and medical communities to provide data and research opportunities on the benefits of therapeutic scuba diving for a range of medical conditions.
For more information on participating, volunteering, or donating, visit diveheart.org.

While tactics may have changed, “boiler room” operations are still used to pitch dubious investment schemes, according to the experts at the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). Typically run as outbound call centers, boiler rooms target retail investors with highly speculative—often fraudulent—investments. In addition to phone calls, today’s boiler rooms also rely on messaging apps and social media to contact potential investors.
Regardless of the method of contact, the scammer’s goal is the same: Use high-pressure tactics and persuasive language to convince investors to purchase specific investments that will ultimately enrich the scammer
The Unsolicited Pitch. If you’ve previously shown interest in higherrisk investments or been victimized by a scam, the promoter might have found your name on a lead list (sometimes called a “mooch list”). Ask yourself, why would they share this opportunity with you rather than keep it to themselves?
The Hard Sell. Scammers often try to pressure investors into buying shares on “can’t miss” opportunities, painting a picture of wealth from an investment and claiming time (or product) is scarce. Be aware that boiler rooms frequently pitch speculative investments for which limited information is available.
The Unlicensed Promoter. Callers might claim to work for organizations that offer stock recommendations. However, the organizations often aren’t registered with FINRA, associated with any FINRA-registered firm, or involved with any legitimate business entity. Callers might use fake names and credentials, disguise their phone number, or create a new website to appear more credible.
The Pump and Dump. Fraudsters sometimes engage in manipulative trading to create the illusion that the stock is on an upward trend and starting to gain traction. This could be a sign of a “pump-and-dump” scheme.
1.Decide now to decide later. Even if the claims sound plausible, don’t say “yes” to an aggressive cold caller or social media promoter, particularly if the recommended stocks are very low priced. Learn to recognize the tactics fraudsters use, and don’t feel guilty about hanging up.
2.Check with regulators and other third parties. Use FINRA BrokerCheck to verify whether a firm and individual are registered to sell securities or give investment advice. Double-check the validity of information about the organization or individual. Also check an investment’s public disclosure information using the SEC’s EDGAR filings.
3.Research the promoter. Fraudsters constantly change the names of their outfits and set up new websites. Search domain registration databases to see how recently the website was created and by whom, and search the promoter’s name along with terms such as “complaints” or “scam.”
4.Don’t give second chances. If you haven’t invested, scammers will keep pressuring you. If you have invested, they’ll try to convince you to invest more.
5.Remain vigilant. Think twice before paying for stock picks from nonregistered or unlicensed individuals—or relying on tips from social channels, subscription services, or newsletters. And be on the lookout for multiple scam attempts in close proximity to one another.
If you’re suspicious about someone giving you unsolicited investment advice or promoting a particular investment, report your concerns to FINRA, the SEC, and your state securities regulator.

Acompany car? (How Boomer-like of you.) A 401(k) plan? (Pretty common these days.)
With Millennials now comprising the largest share of the workforce, a growing number of companies are betting that offering to help pay off student debt is the next game-changer when it comes to attracting and retaining the best and brightest.
It’s not a bad wager. Total education debt stood at a staggering $1.52 trillion at the end of March. And while the perk is by no means reserved only for Millennials - hey, even 4 percent of those 45 and older are still in the hole, according to the Pew Research Center - it’s not lost on anyone that the average student loan borrower will have graduated this year saddled with more than $37,000 in debt.
“It stood at about $600 billion 10 years ago,” MarketWatch.com reported.
One of the companies facilitating the new benefit is the same one - Fidelity Investments - that already handles millions of workers’ 401(k) plans. Businesses enrolled in its Student Debt Employer Contribution program are able to make after-tax contributions on their employees’ outstanding student loans, setting their own parameters as to “who” and “how much” with the help of a modeling tool for estimating their potential recruitment and retention cost savings.
“This is a new and relevant benefit that gives companies a competitive advantage to hire top talent,” said Asha Srikantiah, vice president of emerging products at Fidelity (fidelity.com), noting that the average contribution for most companies is about $100 a month, although it can be as high as $800 monthly in some cases. “It also enables employees to pay off their debt faster, which in turn allows them to focus on other priorities - including buying a home, raising a family, and saving for retirement.”
Among the “early adopters” Fidelity says it’s teaming up with to offer the benefit: tech giant Hewlett Packard Enterprise; the rail industry’s New York Air Brake; financial firms Millennium Trust and OCC (The Options Clearing Corporation); and Ariel Corporation, the world’s largest manufacturer of separable reciprocating gas compressors used in the global natural gas business.
In fact, more than just being a “facilitator” for others, Fidelity helped trail blaze this brave new world by having begun offering its own employees a student debt program back in 2016. To date, more than 8,900 of its workers have received the benefit, paid directly to their loan service provider, with some pretty impressive numbers to show for it: a total of $22.5 million in savings on principal and interest, and 34,625 years of loan payments shaved off.
The company is also taking what it calls “a holistic approach” to the student debt issue by offering open access to its website’s Pre-College Planning Resources, which can help avoid the pitfalls of incurring too much debt, and its Student Debt Tool that lets individuals view all their student loans and repayment options in one place.
A deal recently inked with student debt refinancing platform Credible.com now also integrates student debt refinancing into the Student Debt Tool, allowing employees enrolled in the program to receive actual pre-qualified rates from more than 10 refinancing lenders without affecting their credit scores.
“The idea is to help more Americans take control of their debt so they can better save and invest for the futures,” said Stephen Dash, Credible’s founder and CEO.
