Rural Entrepreneurs Report Growing Economic Anxiety

Rural small businesses face greater challenges to economic recovery and are less optimistic about the future compared to their non-rural counterparts, according to new survey data from SCORE, mentors to America’s small businesses.

SCORE’s fall Megaphone of Main Street: The Small Business Rural/Urban Divide surveyed more than 3,000 entrepreneurs and found that while more than 75% of small businesses surveyed have returned to pre-pandemic levels or better, more than half (53%) of rural entrepreneurs say they feel somewhat or extremely negative about the economy and its impact on their business.

Although customer acquisition remains a challenge for all small businesses, inflation, the overall economy and cash flow are top concerns. In particular, rural entrepreneurs feel more challenged by inflation and supply chain disruptions. Specifically, rural small business owners are:

• 30.2% more likely than nonrural small business owners to cite inflation as one of their top three business concerns

• When compared to non-rural counterparts, are 32.4% more likely to cite supply chain disruptions . Diving deeper, rural small businesses say cash flow is constrained by rising costs for utilities, supplies, labor and capital. Rural entrepreneurs are:

• 9.3% more likely than non-rural small businesses to report higher costs of doing business

• 24.5% more likely to report higher vendor prices, when compared to non-rural entrepreneurs .

Compared to their non-rural counterparts, twice as many rural entrepreneurs say there’s a lack of local banks in their area from which to seek financing, further limiting their ability to secure funding.

What do rural entrepreneurs need in order to overcome these barriers?

Both rural and non-rural small businesses agree that better access to capital would most help them in the coming year, followed by loan forgiveness or debt relief. Interestingly, rural businesses were 24.5% more likely than non-rural businesses to desire assistance in the form of infrastructure improvements.

Recognizing that rural entrepreneurs face unique challenges, SCORE Bozeman Chapter Chair Rick Sanders notes: “Rural entrepreneurs deal with limited inventories and slow turns, requests for services from a limited pool of trained resources, few government resources and fierce

competition from online stores. Thankfully, SCORE is here to connect the dots in rural communities across the country to provide the advice, tools and information rural entrepreneurs really need.”

SCORE supports rural small businesses through challenges

“As a small rural business, there are days where it seems like everything is an obstacle to overcome. From dealing with a remote location and lack of WiFi to physically demanding agricultural work and trying to get our products to customers, I can absolutely say that our business would not have grown without our SCORE mentor,” said Teddi Maslowski, owner of Birch Creek Farmery in Burgettstown, Pa.

“Our SCORE mentor gave us the groundwork to plan aggressive business projections, make decisions before they are high-pressure, and to continuously monitor the direction we are headed —all things that are giving us the confidence to rapidly expand our business in an unstable economy,” Maslowski adds.

Currently, her business’ biggest concern is the increasing cost of product production, but she has strategies in place, including calculations, creative solutions and both short- and long-term plans to work through this phase, thanks to SCORE, she reports.

SCORE provides tangible solutions for rural entrepreneurs

In response to rural small business challenges, SCORE offers a centralized resource hub, SCORE for Rural Entrepreneurs. There you can download the full Megaphone of Main Street: The Small Business Rural/Urban Divide and the full infographic.

Since 1964, SCORE has helped 11 million entrepreneurs start or grow a business. SCORE’s 10,000 volunteers provide free mentoring, workshops and educational services to 1,500+ communities nationwide.

Thethought of pairing a wine with food can intimidate a lot of people. How do you decide what food to pair with a wine? What flavors are you looking for? Why does wine pairing even matter?

“Wine and food pairings don’t have to be complicated,” says Riana Mondavi, a member of the fourth generation of the Mondavi wine family from Napa and an ambassador for her family’s CK Mondavi and Family wines. “It’s really about what you taste and smell in the wine and how you feel the wine brings out and compliments the food you are eating.”

If done correctly, a proper pairing can enhance the flavors of both the food and your chosen bottle of wine. The intensity of a specific food or wine depends on a lot of things such as sugar, acid, salt and spice. The food should not overpower the wine (and vice versa). By matching a light wine with light fare or a heavy dish with a heavier wine, the food and wine balance each other out and their intensities line up for a perfect pairing.

For example, if you have a dish that has a lot of citrus in it, it’s great to pair with a Chardonnay, as it also has hints of citrus in it. The two enhance each other and balance out the flavors. A lighter white wine, such as a Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio, pairs well with summer vegetables, as it brings out the crisp, light flavor profiles. Red wines typically pair best with richer food such as steak and sweets, but there’s no set rule. Many people pair a Merlot with seafood.

CK Mondavi and Family has made wine pairing easy for everyone, and this summer they invite you to play around with pairings. They’ve created a downloadable “Wine pairing made simple” guide on their website: https:// www.ckmondavi.com/ckm-pairings. They also added flavor descriptors to each bottle of CK Mondavi and Family. With descriptors such as “Rich & Velvety” for Cabernet Sauvignon and “Bright & Fresh” for Chardonnay, anyone can quickly decide on a wine.

Riana Mondavi also recommends impromptu wine pairings with friends. “It’s fun to get together with a group to see what everyone tastes or smells in the wine,” she adds. “Everyone has a different opinion and it’s fun to see what we all come up with.”

So, this summer, have some fun pairing wines with your favorite foods. And while doing it, enter CK Mondavi and Family’s monthly #pairNpost drawing, where you can enter to win a prize. Just snap a photo of your favorite pairing and tag it with #pairNpost on Twitter or Instagram.

It’s all part of a new, fun approach to wine. After all, summer is about enjoying yourself and what better way to enjoy life than at the table with friends and family? -(NewsUSA)

Clear The Company Air

If you work for any of the estimated 32 million business in the U.S., here’s news that might take your breath away: Your office air may need cleaning.

It could come as a surprise to some, but HVAC systems get dirty over time and they have the potential to contain large amounts of dust and particulates. That can be unpleasant, even dangerous for office workers; expensive for their employers; and bad for the planet.

Bad Air

Through normal occupation in a building, contaminants and air pollutants such as dander, dust, and chemicals get into the ductwork and are recirculated several times a day. Breathing in that stuff is not good for your health.

Wasted Energy

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of energy used for heating or cooling is wasted. Contaminants in the heating and cooling system cause it to work harder and shorten the life of your system. A clean HVAC system saves energy and costs less to run.

An Answer

Getting the system inspected and professionally cleaned if necessary can be the solution. To help, the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) lists Certified Ventilation Inspectors and Air Systems Cleaning Specialists who can identify and solve these problems.

To Feed or Not to Feed the Birds in Cold Weather

It’san age-old question -- to feed or not to feed birds in fall and winter. Some people believe that feeding wild birds can cause more harm than good, like preventing timely migrations, or causing birds to depend on feeders rather than foraging food. The truth is these are myths and feeding birds is beneficial to their well-being. Birds migrate regardless of seed in feeders. It’s estimated that wild birds only get 25 percent of food from feeders, the rest is naturally sourced, so full feeders don’t keep birds from migrating. Instead, several triggers urge birds to migrate: like changes in nesting locations as trees lose leaves, less natural foods, insect decline, winds, temperature drop and day length. As days grow shorter, many birds get internally restless and head south, taking advantage of plentiful natural foods, and stocked feeders to fuel their flight.

During cold weather, resident birds that don’t migrate, need extra calories to stay warm as they burn energy keeping body temperatures up when temperatures drop. As natural resources decline, resident birds expend much energy searching for food. Providing supplemental food at feeders helps keep birds’ caloric-intake high, supporting them during bouts of brutally cold weather.

In wintry weather, birds can use up to 75 percent of their fat stores per night. Studies show birds with regular access to feeders are healthier, have better feather growth, disease resistance and more successful reproduction. The right bird feed and feeders attract a wide variety of resident and migrating birds to backyards.

Birding expert, Elaine Cole, owner of Cole’s Wild Bird Products, Co., offers timely advice on continuing to feed birds throughout cold weather and keeping birds safe and healthy.

“Not all bird feed is created equal. Cole’s takes exceptional care to select only the top 1 to 2 percent of the highest-quality seeds birds like, with no filler seed ever used. Our ‘Harvest Fresh Lock’ packaging protects nutritional content and doesn’t allow seed to spoil or dry out like other bird feed. No dangerous pesticides, chemicals or mineral oils are ever used, keeping seed safe and as close to natural as possible.

For cold weather, I suggest black oil sunflower, white proso millet, cracked corn, niger seed, raw peanuts and suet cakes or kibbles to ensure the nutritional benefits of feeders. Offering top-quality feed means less waste and an increase in birds at feeders”, says Cole.

“Providing a variety of feed and feeder types increases the diversity of avian

visitors. A tube feeder is a ‘musthave,’ these all-purpose feeders keep seed dry and accommodate a wide variety of birds feeding from multiple ports. Specialty wiremesh tube feeders, designed for birds that cling, can easily dispense tiny, oil-rich niger seeds, proteinpacked dried mealworms and other specialty feed.

For an easy-to-use, one-size-fitsmost feeder, select a bowl style with a protective dome that can be raised and lowered to thwart large birds and squirrels while protecting seed from inclement weather. Easy to hang and fill, bowl feeders accommodate any seed, nuts, suet and even chopped fruit.

Invest in larger feeders which hold more seed, like the ‘Tubezilla.’ Frigid weather makes energy conservation critical; birds can’t afford to waste time waiting for food if feeders are empty. Large capacity feeders decrease the frequency of empty feeders, while increasing the number of bird visits. And they’ll save you some frigid trips outside to refill feeders,” says Cole.

More Tips:

• It’s always essential to clean out residue before adding fresh seed. Because some feeders can be difficult to scrub, this step is too often ignored. Cole’s tube feeders have a built in “quick-clean” feature; a removable base that with one push of a button, provides easy access to the inside, making cleaning -- a vital step in preventing disease -- a breeze!

• It’s difficult to find essential, unfrozen water in winter. The fix? A birdbath with an electric heater that’s continuously full and clean.

• Allow leaves to remain under trees and shrubbery which attract birds with shelter, insects, and fallen seeds.

• Protect birds from cats or hawks by hanging feeders in sheltered spots.

• Providing shelter is as simple as stacking branches and brush. Also, instead of dragging Christmas trees to the curb, put them in a corner of the backyard, for protection from wind and predators.

Supporting Clarity In Health Plan Selection

Whilethe open enrollment experience may be virtual, inperson, or a mix of both this year, it remains important that employers are prepared to help get employees and their families in the best shape possible for a healthy financial future.

The Problem

According to the experts at HSA Bank, a division of Webster Bank, N.A., however, there continues to be a gap in education around health benefit options, especially when it comes to health savings accounts (HSAs) and how they can be used to save for healthcare costs in retirement.

The 2022 HSA Bank Health & Wealth Index found only 12 percent of respondents were optimally engaged with their health benefits. This, combined with a recent study from Carnegie Mellon University which found that 61 percent of those surveyed chose the wrong health plan, costing themselves an average $372 more annually than necessary, highlights the importance of decision support, especially during open enrollment.

An Answer

Fortunately, decision support tools, which are designed to help employees confidently select the health plan that’s right for them from a total cost perspective, can help close this gap. These tools also benefit employers by reducing overall healthcare expenses.

“We have found that selecting a health plan is one of the more challenging experiences for employees,” said Ann Brisk, director of strategic partnerships at HSA Bank. “Employers work hard to offer the right benefit options to their workforce, but there continues to be a disconnect in employee

understanding. Decision support tools can help employees make more informed decisions and take some of the confusion out of choosing the right plan.”

By helping employees “do the math” and better balance decisions and expenses, HSA Bank hopes to assist those who are less-than-optimally engaged navigate the healthcare space and save for the future.

The bank currently offers several decision support tools, which provide personalization, unbiased recommendations and confidentiality for employees. While some tools are available for free on HSA Bank’s website, others are available to employers are part of a “bundle” along with the HSA product. These tools also enhance employers’ long-term efforts to lower out-of-pocket healthcare costs. Each decision support tool offers a unique approach and may appeal to different employers based on the demographic of their employee population.

During open enrollment, these tools are especially helpful for employers as they help all workers get the same level of guidance, regardless of their work set-up. Employees can also include all family decision makers, start early in the process and remain flexible as they make decisions. Furthermore, the accuracy and sophistication of these tools often provide an even better experience than if the employees were all in person.
