Most commonly found in the knee, osteoarthritis is caused by the wearing down of cartilage and loss of fluid cushioning in the knee joint. That wear and tear to the knee joint causes swelling, pain, stiffness and decreased range of motion. Many cases can be debilitating and make everyday living a challenge.

Knee osteoarthritis is prevalent in adults over the age of 45, and more likely found in women than men. It is also common in athletes and those who participate in extreme sports. Detection starts with a physical exam followed by x-rays to look for characteristics in the body such as narrowing joint space between the bones, cysts and uneven joints.

However, some patients suffering from mild to moderate osteoarthritis knee pain have another non-invasive option for treatment. Hyaluronic acid, also known as hyaluronan, is a natural substance found in joint cartilage and in the synovial fluid that fills knee joints and acts like a lubricant and a cushion in the knee.2 In knee osteoarthritis, the hyaluronic acid within the synovial fluid of the knee joint becomes diluted and breaks down, reducing its natural properties.

Helping Kids Do Well And Do Right

T

he more than 3 million public high school teachers and coaches in the U.S. do a lot for their young charges. They help prepare their students for life after graduation. They teach academic lessons and various skills that students will need to attend college and to enter the job market. They help them stay safe and healthy on and off the field. But there’s something more they can provide that most people haven’t really thought about.

Teachers and coaches can encourage and assist young male students in signing up with the Selective Service System.

The Reasons Consider this: A young man in the United States is required to register with the Selective Service when he becomes 18 years old. In addition, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has made registration with Selective Service a condition for U.S. citizenship for any man who comes to settle in the U.S. before his 26th birthday. Registration is the law and it’s a civic duty. Furthermore, failure to register carries consequences that can impact a young man’s future.

Failure to register closes the door to: • Many college loans, Pell Grants, Federal Work-Study and Guaranteed Student PLUS Loans • Federal job training and certification programs • All federal jobs and many state and town jobs.

Registration is also required in some places when applying for a driver’s license.

How To Help Fortunately, helping them fulfill this obligation can be simple. Most high schools in the country have volunteer registrars, generally a guidance counselor, teacher or administrative staff member nominated by the principal. The volunteer can be a man or woman but must be over 18, a U.S. citizen and, if a man, registered with the Selective Service himself. He or she provides the necessary forms and offers whatever help the students need to fill them out properly.

Where Else To Turn Even if they are not the school registrar, teachers and coaches can advise their students to register and they can direct them to check block #22 on the federal FAFSA forms or to go online at www.sss.gov from a smartphone or computer. Registration forms are also available at any U.S. post office.

National Program Helping Survivors of Domestic Violence Smile

O

ctober is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Did you know that one in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime? Maybe you or someone you know has already experienced this violence at the hand of a loved one.

Around 75 percent of physical assaults are to the head, neck and mouth, resulting in substantial dental injuries.

Bruises and scars fade, but broken and missing teeth cannot repair themselves.

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Charitable Foundation’s Give Back a Smile (GBAS) program restores damaged front teeth for survivors of domestic abuse.

Since the inception of the Give Back a Smile program, more than 1,500 survivors of domestic violence have received life-changing smile restorations all across the United States. There are currently more than 70 survivors of domestic or sexual violence receiving smile restorations. These services are provided free through the GBAS network of volunteer cosmetic dentists and other dental professionals.

How Give Back a Smile Works

1. Domestic violence survivors who have suffered dental injuries in the smile zone from abusive intimate partners, family members or as a result of sexual assault, can contact GBAS toll-free at 800.773.

2. Survivors must make an appointment with a counselor, domestic violence advocate, social worker or therapist to complete the advocate section of the GBAS application.

3. GBAS conducts the initial review of the application. However, the dentist has the final say as to the eligibility of the applicant.

4. If the applicant is eligible, GBAS connects the survivor with a local volunteer who provides treatment at no charge to the recipient.

I

t happens every fall. We prepare for winter by replacing screens with storm windows, sealing cracks or leaks around windows and doors, cleaning gutters and shutting off exterior faucets. But what about our home heating system? The experts at the Luxaire™ brand of Johnson Controls encourage you to make these steps part of your winterization routine:

• Replace or clean the filters in your heating unit to improve airflow and efficiency. ENERGY STAR®, a program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, recommends checking your filter every month, especially during heavy-use months, and if it looks dirty, change it. At a minimum, change the filter every three months.

• Consider installing a programmable thermostat like the Luxaire Touchscreen Thermostat with Proprietary Hexagon Interface, which allows you to remotely program your thermostat using your smartphone and lower your home’s temperature when the house is unoccupied.

• Schedule an inspection of your system by a heating professional. Heat pumps and oilfired furnaces need annual tune-ups; gasfired equipment can be serviced every other year. Professional technicians are usually trained to detect leaks, soot, rust, rot, corroded electrical contacts and frayed wires. You might also consider the convenience of a service contract to ensure your system is properly maintained each year.

• Change the batteries in your thermostat to ensure it operates properly throughout the winter.

• Buy an energy-efficient furnace or heat pump.
