Heartfelt Hope: A Young Mom’s New Lease on Life

When faced with a life-threatening heart condition, the right medical device and treatment plan can mean the difference between life and death. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women and people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States. Despite this, only 44% of American women recognize that heart disease is their number one killer, and research shows they continue to be undertreated compared to men.

Choosing Aurora EV-ICD: A Life-Saving Treatment

At just 27 years old, Annie Gates, a mother of three from Miller, South Dakota, found herself struggling with shortness of breath, exhaustion, and the inability to keep up – all symptoms she associated with trying to keep up with her young family. Her journey to receiving care for an underlying heart condition began with subtle but concerning symptoms that quickly escalated into severe episodes of rapid heartbeats, sometimes reaching 250-260 beats per minute – more than triple that of a normal heartbeat.

NOTICES: 0

A particularly severe episode, lasting five minutes, was a critical turning point for Annie. With the nearest medical care more than two hours away, she struggled to remain conscious. As she watched the heart rate numbers on her smartwatch climb, she began to lose her vision and had a sinking feeling this was different. Her husband quickly realized the severity of her condition. In those terrifying moments, Annie recalls feeling like she might die.

Previous medical evaluations were inconclusive, but a pharmacist’s advice led her to seek a second opinion, a decision that likely saved her life. Annie was subsequently diagnosed with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC), a rare genetic condition that causes irregular heartbeats. This diagnosis not only explained her symptoms but also shed light on a family history of unexplained cardiac incidents.

Now that she had a diagnosis, she could look ahead to what her options were to ensure these near-death episodes wouldn’t happen again.

Living with Confidence and Hope

Luckily, Annie’s diagnosis was met with a new cutting-edge solution – the Aurora EV-ICD™ (Extravascular Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator). ICDs are highly effective in providing life-saving therapy for patients at risk of ventricular tachycardia (VT) or sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). An ICD continuously checks the heartbeat and delivers painless pacing pulses

or high-energy shocks to restore a normal heart rhythm. This device offered not just a safeguard against VT, or rapid heartbeat, but a return to her previous quality of life. After her doctor explained the advantages of the EV-ICD compared to traditional ICDs, Annie knew it was the device she wanted given her age and that she would need the protection of ICDs for the rest of her life. The Aurora EV-ICD is implanted in a discreet location below her left armpit that Annie barely notices, fitting comfortably under her sports bra without irritation, and without any wires touching her heart – important factors for Annie. Today, the Aurora EV-ICD gives her –and her family – a sense of normalcy and peace of mind.

With the Aurora EV-ICD “standing watch,” Annie lives with renewed confidence and fewer fears. She continues to engage in daily activities like horse riding and rodeo, running her family’s ranch, and enjoying a revitalized lease on life with enough energy to play with her kids. The Aurora EV-ICD continuously monitors her condition and transmits data to her doctors, ensuring she remains under vigilant care. Her story is a powerful testament to survival, self-advocacy, and the impact of cuttingedge medical technology.

A Message of Persistence and Innovation

Annie’s experience underscores the critical importance of persistence in seeking answers to health questions and challenges, and the transformative impact of medical technology. In sharing her story, she hopes it helps others get the medical answers for whatever they’re experiencing. Her journey with the Aurora EV-ICD offers hope and inspiration, highlighting the courage required to advocate for oneself in the healthcare journey and the life-saving potential of innovative medical solutions.

Cutting Summer Cooling Costs

monthly utility bills arrive, many Americans are getting hot under the collar.

In fact according to the National Energy Directors Association, this summer’s residential cooling costs are projected to be the highest in a decade hitting an average of $719 or about $173 a month.

To add salt to the wound of higher summer cooling costs, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Summer Assessment says the predicted warmer-than-average summer weather pattern for 2024 may challenge areas of the country. The Chairman of FERC recently stated, in part, “Our country is facing an unprecedented surge in demand for affordable electricity, while confronting extreme weather threats to the reliability of our grid.”

To combat the demand for more air conditioning and the resulting utility costs, the nonprofit International Window Film Association (IWFA) recommends the professional installation of heat-blocking window films to reduce interior temperatures by deflecting solar heat gain by as much as 80 percent.

“Professionally installed, state-of-the-art window films may help consumers reduce their electric bills and improve window performance by rejecting a significant amount of interior temperature increases from sunlight during the cooling season,” said Darrell Smith, executive director of the IWFA, the world’s definitive source for window film information.

With window film applied to the glass, a home’s interior temperature may be made more comfortable and balanced throughout the home without the need to shut out natural daylight.

When compared to the price of window replacements, long-lasting window films are very cost-effective and most installations can be completed in a day or less with little, if any, disruption to household routines.

It is also recommended consumers check with their professional installer to determine if the window film selected for installation qualifies for tax rebate incentives under the The Inflation Reduction Act. Visit www.iwfa.com to learn more. - (NAPSI)

Family Meals Boost Mental Health for All Ages

Sharing a meal -- with family members that include relatives but also those you choose to call family -- not only promotes healthy eating, but healthier minds as well, new data show.

More than half of Americans believe that family meals make them feel more connected, according to the FMI Foundation, a nonprofit organization and creator and steward of the Family Meals Movement.

In a recent survey from the FMI Foundation, one-third of Americans said family meals make them feel calm, and approximately four in 10 said family meals are relaxing and fun, and improved their quality of life.

“These new data underscore the hundreds of studies the FMI Foundation has curated to substantiate further the expansive physical and mental health benefits of family meals,” said David Fikes, executive director of the FMI Foundation. “Sharing meals is clearly one of our best proactive practices to build a healthier nation,” he said.

Anxiety and other mental health issues have surged among youth in recent years, and FMI Foundation data support the value of family meals for giving children, teens, and young adults a way to connect and boost their feelings of well-being. Multiple published studies demonstrate that family meals are associated with reduced symptoms of depression, fewer incidents of violent behavior, and reduced thoughts of suicide in youth, as well as a reduction in patterns of disordered eating. Additional studies support the link between increased

family meals and more prosocial behavior and feelings of life satisfaction among adolescents.

Family meals are good for adults, too. Data from the FMI Foundation show higher levels of self-esteem and family function, as well as lower levels of stress and depression among adults who share more meals with family members.

“Family meals are a proven way to strengthen the emotional well-being of children and adults and bolster the bonds they share.” Fikes emphasized. “With youth depression and anxiety at an all-time high, there has never been a better time to take simple steps, like family meals, to build healthier hearts, minds, and bodies.”

Joining the Family Meals Movement is one way to take advantage of the many benefits family meals offer. If you’re looking for ways to have just one more family meal each week, visit your local supermarket for meal ideas, recipes, cooking and preparation suggestions and products that help make family meals easily achievable. Many grocery stores offer instore retail dietitians who can offer customized nutrition and meal-planning tools to fit your budget and needs. And don’t forget to take part in National Family Meals Month™, celebrated in September as part of the Family Meals Movement.

How The Climate Crisis Affects You— And What You Can Do About It

Families across the country cope with the effects of the climate crisis as extreme storms, wildfires, heat and floods grow in frequency and intensity. In fact, one of the nation’s leaders in disaster relief, the American Red Cross, now responds to nearly twice as many large disasters across the country as it did a decade ago.

National Preparedness Month in September is an important reminder to help your family and pets stay safe by taking action now with three simple steps: Get a kit, make a plan and be informed.

Get a Kit

Build your emergency kit with a gallon of water per person, per day; nonperishable food; a flashlight; and a battery-powered radio. Also include a first aid kit, medications, supplies for infants or pets, a multi-purpose tool and personal hygiene items. Don’t forget to add copies of important papers, cell phone chargers, blankets, maps of the area and emergency contact information.

Make a Plan

Plan what to do in case you are separated from your family during an emergency and need to evacuate. Make sure to coordinate your plan with your child’s school, your work and your community’s emergency plans.

Be Informed

Find out what disasters or emergency situations may occur where you live, work and go to school; how officials will contact you during a disaster; and how you will get important information, such as evacuation orders.

Depending on your household’s needs, you may have additional considerations as part of your emergency planning. Visit redcross.org/prepare for more

information and tips.

How to Help Others

The increase in large disaster responses also means that more people need help across the country. As a part of this, the Red Cross is calling for new volunteers to help grow its disaster workforce—90% comprised of trained volunteers— to deliver shelter, food, health and mental health support, and one-on-one recovery assistance. Learn more and become a volunteer at redcross.org/ VolunteerToday.

Weather Affects the National Blood Supply

Blood and platelet donations that go uncollected due to climate-related events, such as hurricanes, wildfires and extreme heat, can put further strain on the national blood supply. As extreme weather events are worsening, the Red Cross—which provides about 40% of the nation’s blood supply—is seeing that translate into more blood drive cancellations. In 2022, over 1,300 blood drives were canceled due to weather—about 23% higher than the average of the prior nine years.

Fewer donors than needed have given blood this summer, drawing down the national blood supply and reducing distributions of some of the most needed blood types to hospitals.

People depend on the generosity of blood donors. To ensure the nation’s blood supply is prepared for all emergencies, the Red Cross urges individuals to schedule an appointment to donate today using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, by visiting RedCrossBlood.org or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800733-2767). If you are unable to give blood, you can volunteer to support blood collections at redcross.org/VolunteerToday. -(NAPSI)

While tactics may have changed, “boiler room” operations are still used to pitch dubious investment schemes, according to the experts at the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). Typically run as outbound call centers, boiler rooms target retail investors with highly speculative—often fraudulent—investments.

In addition to phone calls, today’s boiler rooms also rely on messaging apps and social media to contact potential investors.

Boiler Rooms—An Old Stock Scam Gets A Technology Makeover

Regardless of the method of contact, the scammer’s goal is the same: Use high-pressure tactics and persuasive language to convince investors to purchase specific investments that will ultimately enrich the scammer.

Red Flags of a Boiler Room Scam

The Unsolicited Pitch. If you’ve previously shown interest in higher-risk investments or been victimized by a scam, the promoter might have found your name on a lead list (sometimes called a “mooch list”). Ask yourself, why would they share this opportunity with you rather than keep it to themselves?

The Hard Sell. Scammers often try to pressure investors into buying shares on “can’t miss” opportunities, painting a picture of wealth from an investment and claiming time (or product) is scarce. Be aware that boiler rooms frequently pitch speculative investments for which limited information is available.

The Unlicensed Promoter. Callers might claim to work for organizations that offer stock recommendations. However, the organizations often aren’t registered with FINRA, associated with any FINRA-registered firm, or involved with any legitimate business entity. Callers might use fake names and credentials, disguise their phone number, or create a new website to appear more credible.

The Pump and Dump. Fraudsters sometimes engage in manipulative trading to create the illusion that the stock is on an upward trend and starting to gain traction. This could be a sign of a “pump-and-dump” scheme.

How Can You Protect Yourself?

1.Decide now to decide later. Even if the claims sound plausible, don’t say “yes” to an aggressive cold caller or social media promoter, particularly if the recommended stocks are very low priced. Learn to recognize the tactics

fraudsters use, and don’t feel guilty about hanging up.

2.Check with regulators and other third parties. Use FINRA BrokerCheck to verify whether a firm and individual are registered to sell securities or give investment advice. Double-check the validity of information about the organization or individual. Also check an investment’s public disclosure information using the SEC’s EDGAR filings.

3.Research the promoter. Fraudsters constantly change the names of their outfits and set up new websites. Search domain registration databases to see how recently the website was created and by whom, and search the promoter’s name along with terms such as “complaints” or “scam.”

4.Don’t give second chances. If you haven’t invested, scammers will keep pressuring you. If you have invested, they’ll try to convince you to invest more.

5.Remain vigilant. Think twice before paying for stock picks from nonregistered or unlicensed individuals—or relying on tips from social channels, subscription services, or newsletters. And be on the lookout for multiple scam attempts in close proximity to one another.

If you’re suspicious about someone giving you unsolicited investment advice or promoting a particular investment, report your concerns to FINRA, the SEC, and your state securities regulator.

Three Fraud Prevention Tips

Since government pandemic assistance programs have largely come to an end, fraudsters have turned their attention back to developing increasingly clever ways to trick you into giving them your money—but you can protect yourself and your assets.

Here are two confidence schemes that have been trending in recent months:

•Malicious Links: Bad actors text a link that appears to be from a legitimate company. Even if you don’t provide any information, clicking on the link can lead to malicious software or viruses on your phone.

•Spoofing: Fraudsters attempt to steal personal information by pretending to be someone with an urgent request—these bad actors often pose as government agents or fraud investigators from your bank.

In both scenarios, the goal of the bad actors is to trick the customer into providing personal information as well as bank account and login details that will let the fraudster take over the account and empty it using various peer-to-peer payment services or wires. Since the bad actors have personal information and the bank account login details, they are able to pose as the customer and confirm that they want to send money. In the case of the impostor phone call, the scammer will often trick the customer into sending them money to “resolve fraudulent activity” while speaking with them on the phone.

The experts at Citi suggest the Top 3 Tips to help you avoid these types of fraud:

1.Scammers Have Learned How to Spell: Don’t assume that all scammers misspell or use obvious email addresses and URLs, or make requests that you send money to a faraway land to claim a lost fortune. Today’s fraudsters send emails and text links that closely imitate those from real companies or

other trusted individuals and that may appear to be legitimate.

2.Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Messages: Be aware of seemingly real emails, texts and phone calls that ask you to urgently provide personal or account information. These tricks are especially successful when people are distracted by their busy lives. Don’t click on a link from any email or text that you receive unexpectedly and delete unsolicited incoming emails and texts. Additionally, don’t provide any personal identifying or account information to any inbound communication by phone, email or text. Contact your bank or the merchant directly via known and trusted communication channels if you are concerned about an account that is the subject of an unsolicited or suspicious message.

3.Don’t Take the Call—Make the Call: If you get a call from an unknown number, don’t answer it or return it. Instead, reach out directly to your bank by logging in to its secure website or by calling the known customer service number from the back of your card to review account activity and information. Even if you get a call from a number which appears on caller ID as your bank’s name and number, do not provide personal information on that inbound call as fraudsters can easily spoof the incoming caller ID information.

Cyber-enabled fraud is very lucrative and bad actors work around the clock, using sophisticated algorithms that enable them to set up convincing confidence schemes that will trick you into giving away your credentials, your identity, even your life savings. Be vigilant to avoid taking the bait.
