Finding Health Insurance Coverage For Your New College Graduate

As you and your child look to the future, many questions may arise. One often lost in these planning discussions is what are the graduate’s health insurance needs.

While it might be the last thing you ask yourself, it can be one of the most significant. Adults ages 19 to 34 have the highest uninsured rates of any age group in the United States—and that may put them at risk. One unexpected accident or illness could have long-lasting health and financial impacts.

“Choosing the right health coverage may seem difficult to young people, as many have never shopped for their own health insurance,” said Dan Garrison, president of HealthMarkets Insurance Agency. “Fortunately, there is a wide range of coverage options available to a family working to meet a graduate’s unique care needs and financial situation.”

And now is the time to start. While some graduates may have secured jobs that offer health benefits, some may not have access to these benefits immediately, while others may need to look at other options.

Here are some tips for getting started:

Know where to go for support. You and your graduate can find helpful information through healthcare marketplaces, insurance carriers, insurance brokers and other licensed agents. For example, GetCovered, powered by HealthMarkets, is a free service that provides guidance for graduates in need of healthcare coverage—by phone at 877-270-0029 or online at getcovered.com/graduate.

Have answers to these kick-off questions.

• When does the graduate’s current coverage end, if it is through the university or college?

• Is coverage possible under the family’s plan? Under the “Age 26 Rule,” parents or guardians may maintain or add children to their health plans until the young person’s 26th birthday or later, depending on the state.

• What benefits does the graduate need or want?

• What portion of the graduate’s monthly budget can go to health insurance?

Understand your options

If coverage under the “Age 26” rule is not an option, consider:

• Medicaid/Medicare—While Medicare coverage is primarily available to individuals over age 65, Medicaid eligibility is based on income, disability, and other circumstances.

• Individual exchange/marketplace plans—These ACA plans are available through federal or state enrollment sites. Based on income, your graduate may be eligible for plan subsidies—making one of these plans more affordable. Graduation would be a “qualifying life event” to enroll in an ACA plan outside of the annual Open Enrollment Period.

• Short-term plans—Short-term limited duration insurance plans offer different levels of coverage than ACA plans. These plans provide temporary coverage to bridge the gap between longer-term insurance coverage, such as health benefits offered by an employer.

“Health coverage decisions can be made simpler—and there are resources to help,” Garrison said. “Whether your family chooses to do its own research and enrollment, or engage outside services, determining what your graduate may need and can afford will help you find health coverage that ensures your child has access to care now.” -(NAPSI)

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming our societies and economies in almost unimaginable ways, according to experts at the Special Competitive Studies Project (SCSP), a bipartisan nonprofit organization. Today’s AI powers personalized, precision medicine; gene therapy; vaccine discovery; drug design; and cancer screening. AI also is revolutionizing crop management, reducing waste, and supporting the development of alternative energy sources.

However, on a global scale, smart regulation is needed to make the most of AI.

The European Union has developed a proposal to regulate AI (the AI Act), but it falls short on security issues, SCSP team say. Meanwhile, the Chinese Communist Party has made clear their intent to control emerging technology.

The United States and the EU must come together rather than drift apart on AI, and the EU’s AI Act is likely to hinder innovation with a strategy of “regulate first and work out the details later.”

The SCSP analysts outline how the U.S. and EU might move forward with AI management to preserve global leadership in this essential area.

Promote innovation with responsible regulation. Technology has become the organizing principle of the contest for global order. Most of the democratic world agrees at least on basics of what AI should and should not be allowed to do, according to the SCSP. Democratic partners won’t agree on all the details of a plan for regulation, but these minor differences need not prevent cooperation on larger issues of strategic alignments and economic ties. A balance is needed between regulation and innovation,

the SCSP experts explain. AI systems must be built and used safely, responsibly, and ethically.

Invest in resources. Democracies must marshal the resources and diplomatic will to collectively build the digital apps, software, and platforms that support everyday governance, commerce, and life, which means governmentsupported investment in global digital ecosystem projects. The transatlantic alliance should spend more time on cultivating our rich ecosystems of universities, companies, and innovators, rather than belaboring the risks of innovation.

Upgrade alliances. From a diplomatic standpoint, democracies need a new alliance framework with investment in our collective comparative advantages for technologies, not only AI, but also 5G and chip technology. In addition, democracies must build strategic partnerships to keep control of the digital infrastructure of the future and align on maintaining standards based on technical, not political, criteria.

Key questions for the successful future of AI include how to unlock data for the good of society while upholding our values, how to encourage AI researchers to solve our big societal problems, and how to get more young people excited about studying to become AI engineers, according to SCSP.

“We need to shift our mindsets toward an optimistic view of AI and look forward to harnessing its benefits, rather than automatically hitting the regulation button,” the SCSP experts emphasize.

Five Home Improvement Projects that are Low Cost and High Impact

Housing prices may be as expensive as ever, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to put your plans for a dream home on hold. Rather than purchasing a new house, many homeowners are instead opting to improve their current living spaces through redecorating and Do-It-Yourself projects. You don’t have to be a DIY expert to get started—many of these projects are extremely approachable, helping you to upgrade your home without breaking the bank.

What You Can Do

There are seemingly endless possibilities when it comes to home improvement, so it might be overwhelming to determine where to begin. To give you some inspiration, the experts at Design House have shared five DIY-projects that are low cost and can result in high impact on your home.

• Get a Handle on Hardware—Replacing hardware on your kitchen cabinets, vanity pulls, hinges, or doorstops can create an instant makeover and is a DIY project anyone can take on. Selecting new hardware allows you to explore trending designs that immediately make a dated home more current. An affordable upgrade, hardware is often sold in convenient, prepacked quantities and can often be purchased for less than $100.

• Install a Lamp Post—Lamp posts are a great way to increase the curb appeal of your home, adding beauty to entranceways, walkways, and paths. As an added benefit they can also provide increased safety after dark and help with easier navigation from place to place at night.

• Add a Medicine Cabinet to Your Bathroom—Give your bathroom a refresh by installing a medicine cabinet. In addition to providing extra storage, medicine cabinet designs offer a variety of styles and sizes to choose from that will best fit both your aesthetic and functional needs.

• Update with Upholstered Seating— If you have an open floor plan, explore incorporating upholstered seating throughout your kitchen and dining areas. At bar, counter, and dining areas, utilizing upholstered seating is a simple way to enhance your home with touches of luxury.

• Brighten a Room with a Mirror— Mirrors reflect light, which can result in making a room appear more open and illuminated. Adding a mirror can have the effect of an additional window or light source. By strategically placing a mirror on the wall, you can enhance both the lighting and spatial qualities of a room.

These are several of the many projects anyone can take on without extensive DIY experience. In addition to being affordable, all of these upgrades can have a high impact when it comes to enhancing your home.

What You Need To Know About Marfan Syndrome

“God kept me here for a reason,” said Michael Redd, 41, of Georgia. “To tell people about Marfan syndrome.”

Michael’s wife, Teresa, added, “If we can save a life, we will tell anyone our story.”

It’s a story that could have ended when Michael was 14 years old, when he had his first aneurysm. Michael had many of the physical signs of Marfan syndrome early on. He was tall and gangly, had hypermobile joints and hammer toes, and had eye issues that are common in people with Marfan syndrome. He felt different and was called a “friendly giant.” Yet he had never been diagnosed with Marfan, a connective tissue condition that affects many parts of the body.

Michael survived the surgery for the brain aneurysm, but serious medical issues followed, culminating with chest pain in 2014 that led to aortic surgery, which is common in people with Marfan. Still the underlying cause had not been identified and Michael was lucky to be alive. Aortic dissection (a tear in the large artery that carries blood away from the heart), can be fatal if not treated quickly. However, emergencies can be prevented with the right medication and monitoring, as well as surgery before a potentially fatal event.

It wasn’t until a month after aortic surgery that Michael, had genetic testing. Marfan syndrome, a genetic condition, was confirmed. After learning about Marfan and thinking of his family medical history—other relatives who had many of the same physical features and died early deaths due to aneurysm— Michael knew that the diagnosis made sense.

Signs and Symptoms

Every person’s experience with Marfan syndrome is slightly different. Some features of Marfan syndrome are easier to see than others. These include long arms, legs, and fingers; tall and thin body type; curved spine; chest sinks in or sticks out; flexible joints; flat feet; crowded teeth; and stretch marks on the skin that are not related to weight gain or loss.

Harder-to-detect signs of Marfan syndrome include heart problems, especially those related to the aorta, the large blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart to the rest of the body. Other signs can include sudden lung collapse and eye problems, including severe nearsightedness, dislocated lens, detached retina, early glaucoma, and early cataracts. Special tests are often needed to detect these features.

More On Marfans

About 1 in 5,000 people has Marfan syndrome, including men and women of all races and ethnic groups. About 3 out of 4 people with Marfan syndrome inherit it, meaning they get the genetic mutation from a parent who has it. And there is a 50 percent chance that a person with Marfan syndrome will pass along the genetic mutation each time they have a child.

A Family Issue

The next step was for Michael to get his two young daughters tested. Both Michelle and Mariah were then confirmed to have Marfan.

The family takes Marfan syndrome seriously. They are grateful that they know what it is and are aware of the signs of an emergency. And they have sought out the medical care of an expert physician on Marfan syndrome, Dr. Glen Iannucci, Director of the Aorta & Vascular Program at the Children’s Heart Center, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, who helped them understand the condition. Teresa calls Dr. Iannucci a “God-sent angel.”

“With an early diagnosis and proper medical management, people with Marfan syndrome can live a long lifespan,” said Dr. Iannucci, who oversees the care of Michelle and Mariah. “I would recommend that anyone who has the outward signs of Marfan talk to their doctor and get evaluated. Treatment of Marfan has come a long way in the past 25 years. Medical management can make the difference between life and death.”

Michelle, who is a seventh grader and wants to be a lawyer when she grows up, thinks it’s “really cool” to tell her story about Marfan and has shared information on the condition with her friends.

“There are more people like me out there,” said Michelle. “I tell other kids it’s going to be okay.”

As Extreme Disasters Mount, Help Ensure No One Faces Them Alone

Many families—maybe even yours—face another year of extreme weather as a growing number of climate disasters continues to displace people in the U.S. But you can help ensure no one deals with these crises alone.

The Problem

Over the past decade, the number of severe disasters with overall damages of at least $1 billion has increased 70% in the U.S.—part of a years-long trend of more frequent and intense hurricanes, wildfires, severe storms, floods and other emergencies. As a result, this relentless pace of climatedriven disasters has created more ongoing emergency needs for people, including those who have been forced from their homes by multiple events.

What Can be Done

Because of the climate crisis, the American Red Cross is now launching nearly twice as many relief operations for major disasters as it did a decade ago. And this growing need for assistance means it must increase volunteer capacity to continue responding on a near-constant basis.

Volunteers of all ages are at the heart of the Red Cross mission and represent 90% of its workforce, responding to tens of thousands of disasters each year. They’re continuously on the ground, providing shelter, comfort, hot meals, health services and recovery support to families who are overwhelmed and have nowhere else to go.

What You Can Do

You can help provide relief and hope when it matters most by volunteering. Most-needed disaster positions include supporting shelters and providing health services.

•Shelter support: Help at a shelter during a large disaster by welcoming and registering residents, serving meals, setting up cots, distributing blankets and personal hygiene kits, and providing information and other assistance to people in need.

•Health services: If you’re a licensed healthcare provider, you can use your skills to deliver hands-on support, including care and education to people staying at a shelter during a large disaster.

• Disaster action team: Help families affected by smaller disasters in your community by providing food, lodging, comfort, recovery assistance and other support. From offering a shoulder to cry on, to meeting any immediate needs for shelter or supplies, to connecting people with support services, they ensure that families don’t have to face tough times alone.
