Most industries strive to do more with less, and agriculture is no different. Today’s farmers use advanced tools and technologies that focus on the basics of plant science: how to make plants more efficient at taking up the essential nutrients they need. Pollinators: More Than Just Bees

ees are synonymous with pollination—and for good reason. Their size, shape and physical characteristics—fuzzy bodies that so effectively collect and transport pollen—make them efficient foragers. Additionally, they are conditioned to collect ample pollen to take back to their brood, a behavior that has helped reinforce their reputation as “busy bees.” It’s important to recognize, however, that other insects and animals contribute to pollination, the important process of collecting and distributing pollen to help plants reproduce and bear food. Research conducted in recent years suggests that the combined activity of non-bee pollinators— such as flies, bats and butterflies—can be just as valuable to pollination as bees. The Lesser-Known Pollinators A black-and-yellow-striped insect hovering above a flower is not always a bee. Some flies—such as flower flies, or hoverflies—resemble bees; for this reason, they’re called bee mimics. Several plant species—most notably, the cocoa tree—rely exclusively on fly pollination. Without flies, there would be no cocoa beans to produce the chocolate enjoyed throughout the world. It might come as a surprise that bats are responsible for pollinating hundreds of different plant species. Since bats are nocturnal, they feast on the nectar of flowers that open at night, including the flowering plants and trees that produce bananas, guavas and mangoes. Bats are also found in the desert, where they pollinate the agave plant.
Butterflies aren’t physically able to carry as much pollen as bees can but their quick and graceful movements help them cover a larger land area, drinking nectar with their long tongues and pollinating plants along the way. What You Can Do To Help Pollinators Thrive Providing food and forage is one of the best ways to keep pollinators productive and healthy and the agriculture industry is helping. For example, with Operation Pollinator, global agriculture company Syngenta partners with commercial farms, golf courses and conservation organizations to establish large swaths of wildflower plots for pollinators. For home gardeners, establishing pollinator plots can be as easy as incorporating native flowers within your yard or garden plantings. Breaking Down The School Staffing Surge ost parents believe the more personnel there are in a school, the better the education their kids can get—but this may not
Staffing Up Consider this: Between 1950 and 2015, the number of full-time teachers increased nearly 2.5 times as quickly as the increase in students, reducing class sizes significantly. Over that same time, however, the number of nonteachers—administrators, social workers, counselors, reading and math coaches, janitors, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, curriculum specialists—increased more than seven times the increase in students. Teachers’ Salaries Down As public schools were hiring more and more nonteaching staff, inflation-adjusted salaries for public school teachers actually fell by 2 percent. Not only did teachers’ salaries stagnate, but they were also more vulnerable to cuts when school budgets were tightened. During the Great Recession, while this staffing surge was briefly and modestly reversed, school administrators were about 1.7 times more likely to fire teachers than they were to fire other administrators or nonteaching staff. Costs Up This explosion in “all other staff” hiring had a huge opportunity cost. A conservative estimate puts the potential savings at $35 billion a year, for a total of $805 billion. With that money, public schools could have given every teacher a permanent $11,100 raise or funded

Some say this staffing surge was necessary to improve the academic outcomes of an increasingly disadvantaged student population. Empirical studies, however, found that today’s public school students are slightly more advantaged than in previous generations. For example, families these days are smaller, child poverty is lower and parents tend to be more educated than in the past. How to Stay Hydrated Like a Pro All Summer
M
any of us spend our summer soaking up the sun. Kids are out of school, outdoor sports are plenty, and people are enjoying warm weather activities. However, spending a lot of time outside in the elements puts you at risk for dehydration-related concerns. While most people know that water is critical for your health, what you may not know is that water makes up about 55 to 65 percent of your body. Many may be surprised to know that losing only four percent of your body weight -- roughly the equivalent of riding a bike for three hours in extreme heat without rehydrating -- may cause you to faint.1 The following simple tips from Dr. Ralph Holsworth, a board-certified family medicine physician and head of clinical and scientific research for Essentia Water, will help you stay well hydrated this summer: * Sip with purpose; don’t chug. -- When you drink too much water at once, it passes through your system too quickly, failing to go to the kidneys. This can lead to dehydration despite the amount of water you may be drinking. Drinking too much water can also cause cramping, as well as bloating and stomach pains, due to loss of electrolytes. Aim to take a sip of water every 15-20 minutes when you’re playing sports or when it’s hot outside and you should be right on track. * Aim to drink 3 liters a day. -- The age-old 8-glasses-a-day rule doesn’t always suffice in the hot summer months. People should try to drink 12 glasses a day, especially if they are planning on working out, playing sports or spending excessive amounts of time in the sun.
