chool vacations can be an excellent time for high school seniors and their parents to get a head start on the college application process—you can focus on finding the right college without balancing the responsibilities of schoolwork and extracurriculars. Fortunately, there is a new tool that serves as a free and simple college planning guide for all students, while giving them a chance to win scholarships for each step they take. The College Board Opportunity Scholarships support students and families on the path to college by laying out six steps of what to do and when to do it. The program launched in December for the class of 2020. Completing each step will earn a chance for a scholarship; completing all six will earn students a chance to win $40,000 for their college education. Here’s what you can do now to save time later:

1. Build Your College List—Get started by exploring colleges you’re interested in and create a list of at least six schools. 2. Practice for the SAT—Use Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy to get ready for test day. 3. Improve Your Score— Show how practice pays off by improving your SAT score. You can sign up to take the SAT on August 24 before school starts.
To be eligible for the $40,000 scholarships, students in the class of 2020 must sign up for the program and complete the Build Your College List steps by June 30. The College Board Opportunity Scholarships are about how much you grow, not how high you score. The program doesn’t require an essay, application, a minimum GPA or a minimum SAT score. Instead, the program rewards all students’ efforts and actions on their way to college. The more effort you put in and actions you complete, the more chances you have to earn a college scholarship.
The College Board is investing $25 million over five years. The class of 2020 will earn a total of 4,000 scholarships for $5 million by the time 4. Strengthen Your College List—Add to your college list and make sure the program ends for them in March 2020. A total of 1,025 scholarships, it’s a mix of academic safety, fit, and reach schools. amounting to $850,000, have been given to date. Winners have come from 42 states, D.C. and Puerto Rico. 5. Complete the FAFSA—Fill out the free government form to apply for financial aid. Students can sign up at www.CB.org/Opportunity. The program opens to the class of 2021 in December 2019. 6. Facts On Fuel From An Expert Boater by Don Onken, Onken’s Incorporated
A
s an avid boater, I always eagerly anticipate the transition from winter into spring and summer because it means my family and I can get back out on the water. Much goes into properly maintaining a boat, so the start of boating season is a busy time for many Americans. Whether it’s getting the boat cleaned up or checking all the parts that might need replacing, there’s always a flurry of activity that goes along with pushing off from the dock for the first time of the season. However, there’s one disappointing element in the leadup to boating season, and that’s the predictable spread of misinformation regarding the fuel you put in your boat’s tank. I am the owner of the American Ethanol Mystic Powerboats 51-foot catamaran, which holds the speed record for piston-powered boats at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, the largest unsanctioned boat race in the country. We use an extremely high-octane 85 percent ethanol blend in our engine to routinely break 200-plus miles per hour in shootout races. If you’re a recreational boater you won’t need all that octane, plus you won’t be able to find racing fuel at the pump. However, E10 (gasoline blended with 10 percent ethanol), also known as “regular unleaded,” is a great option for you that can be found at nearly any gas station. Some would have you believe that ethanol fuel has no place in boating, but that’s false. And as somebody who’s spent much of my life around boats, it’s frustrating to see misinformation spread by the petroleum industry take hold. The fact is, E10 is approved for use in all marine engines and has been warrantied for use by all the major boat manufacturers for decades. That list includes Kawasaki, Mercury Marine, OMC (Johnson/ Evinrude), Pleasurecraft, Tigershark (ARTCO), TRACKER, Honda and Yamaha.
E10 is the national standard for gasoline—98 percent of the country’s gas contains 10 percent ethanol. It might not be as fun as the high-octane, high-ethanol blend that I put in my racing boat, but a little bit of ethanol still has a big positive impact. Ethanol is renewable, biodegradable, and is higher in octane than older, petroleum-based additives linked to groundwater contamination, cancer and smog. Many boaters like me care about the environment more than the average person because we spend so much time out in nature, so fueling up with E10 is a choice we can feel good about. Ethanol is a naturally inexpensive, high-octane, cleaner fuel, which makes it a great fuel additive for cars, trucks or boats. E15 (made with 15 percent ethanol) is currently being sold in 31 states across the U.S. It allows drivers to get a higher-octane fuel for up to 10 cents per gallon less than E10, and it’s approved for all cars model year 2001 and newer. E15 is not currently approved for use in boats, which is why fuel pumps are clearly labeled and you’ll obviously never find it at your local marina. But it’s a great option for most cars on the road today, and I put it in my truck whenever it’s available. As you prepare for boating season, I encourage you to know which fuels meet your specific price and performance needs. Follow the guidelines of your owner’s manual and be aware that E10 is a great way to keep your boat running smoothly while being friendlier to the environment and to your wallet. Having options at the fuel pump is a good thing for consumers, and the scare tactics about ethanol in boating are designed to limit that choice. -(NAPSI)
EXERCISE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT By Dr. Barry Ramo
M
y patient was 69-year-old man who came to the New Heart New You program at New Heart Fitness and health. He was concerned because his blood pressure had not been well controlled. He had a strong family history of heart disease. He still smoked ½ pack of cigarettes daily. At the New Heart New You program he spent 3 hours a week for 12 weeks meeting weekly with a trainer and nutritionists. A risk assessment indicated that he was high-risk for heart disease and stroke. This program began by focusing on his lack of exercise. His job required to sit all day. In the evening, he watched televsion. As a preventative cardiologist, I always start with exercise. If I can get a patient to begin an exercise program, they will take care of other problems that pose a risk to their heart such as improving their nutrition and weight management and stopping smoking. Exercise has important metabolic effects. The LDL cholesterol or the lousy cholesterol found in the atherosclerotic plaque in the arteries is responsible for strokes and heart attacks It can be reduced with exercise diet and cholesterol-lowering medication. Exercise itself raises HDL cholesterol and lowers LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Additionally, exercise improves the body’s response to insulin. He was prediabetic. The exercise will help make insulin the makes more effective and reduce the chances of his becoming diabetic. Patients often ask me whether exercise can turn the clock back. In fact, there is data suggesting that people who are regular exercisers do have
changes in their DNA that go along with a longer life. There are structures at the end of the DNA molecules that protect the DNA called telomeres. As we age these telomeres shorten and at that time the DNA that they are to protect begins degrading. Studies have shown that regular exercisers at age 70 can have telomeres that look like they’re 15 years younger. How much should you exercise? The latest guidelines suggest that we should be doing at least 2 ½ hours a week of aerobic exercise and then 20 minutes twice a week of strength training, stretching and balance training. High intensity interval training has become very popular. Carefully designed analysis of the many studies on this subject have been inconclusive in terms of its benefit over continuous exercise. Some studies suggest that it produces more weight loss than continuous exercise and others suggest that one can get a level of fitness in a shorter period from high intensity interval training than from continuous exercise. Exercise improves cognitive function. It improves the ability to focus and improve memory. In part this may be the benefits of exercise on the circulation brain but also may be the result of overall improvement in people’s health. So, with the Senior Games in New Mexico we are seeing the best of older people who recognize the powerful impact that exercise can have on their physical and emotional well-being. The Importance Of Early Screening For Autism

utism affects an estimated one in every 59 children. Though early intervention can make a lifetime of difference, far too many children are not diagnosed early enough.

While every child develops differently, early screening improves outcomes. Studies show, for example, that early intensive behavioral intervention improves learning, communication and social skills in young children with autism spectrum disorders.
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. There is not just one kind of autism but rather many subtypes, and each person with autism can have unique strengths and challenges. A combination of genetic and environmental factors can influence the development of autism. Though ASD can be reliably diagnosed as early as age 2, the average age of diagnosis in the United States is between 4 and 5. Furthermore, the reported prevalence among white children is 7 percent higher than for African American children and 22 percent higher than for Hispanic children—suggesting missed or delayed diagnoses in those groups. For young children on the spectrum, early intervention is crucial; it can translate to a lifetime of impact by supporting healthy development, improving communication, decreasing challenging behaviors and leading to positive outcomes later in life. What You Can Do 1. Learn the Signs: Parents can learn to recognize the early signs of autism. Not all children with autism show all signs of autism. That’s why all children should be screened for autism. A diagnosis is the first step toward supporting your children to help them fulfill their potential. Here are some possible signs of autism: • No big smiles or eye contact at 6 months • No babbling, back and forth gestures such as pointing, and little response to their name at 12 months • Very few words at 16 months • No two-word phrases at 24 months • Restricted interests • Repetitive behaviors

Exhibition on the Big Ugly Fat Fellow at the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History
he Smithsonian affiliated, congressionally chartered National Museum of Nuclear Science & History will tell the story of the longest serving aircraft in United States military in the special exhibition, “BUFF: The B-52 Story,” on display June 8 through December 29, 2019. This temporary exhibition explores this iconic Boeing aircraft’s past, present and future as an American strategic bomber. It is a substantial history, as this aircraft came into existence sixty years ago to deliver a nuclear payload on the Soviet Union during a possible World War III, and its lifespan is projected to extend beyond 2040. Visitors will be guided through the B-52’s history of modifications and upgrades, from development by the Boeing six-man “dream team” in 1948 who designed the first prototypes to the aircraft’s role in Iraqi Freedom in 2003. The B-52 played an important role in nuclear weapons testing, starting in 1956, and this special exhibition highlights many strategic operations. It also displays information on Chrome Dome, a seven-year initiative featuring airborne alert missions where B-52 units rotated on flying routes over the Arctic and Mediterranean. Pop culture even plays a role in this engaging exhibition, displaying multiple B-52 themed movie posters throughout the years. “BUFF: The B-52 Story” also takes time to focus on the achievements of the museum’s own B-52B Stratofortress, serial number 52-0013, newly restored and on display in the museum’s nine-acre outdoor exhibit area. This aircraft is Albuquerque’s airplane - delivered directly from Boeing to Kirtland Air Force Base in 1955, never assigned to another Air Force
Base – and it was used for atomic testing in the Pacific during Operation Redwing, 1956, and Operation Dominic, 1962. It remains the only B-52B in existence that has dropped an atomic bomb - dropped during testing. A number of missiles carried by B-52 through the years will also be on display, including the broken arrows accidentally dropped in 1966 by a B-52 off the coast of Spain as well as a Short-Range Attack missile (SRAM). “The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History is proud to celebrate the incredible military service of the B-52, and we are thrilled to have one here that is so tied to Albuquerque’s military history,” said Jim Walther, Museum Director. “I hope many visitors will come to see our B-52, and learn about the history of this iconic aircraft and its important missions.” “BUFF: The B-52 Story” will be on display at the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History June 8 through December 29, 2019.
