he United States’ national graduation rate rose to record highs in 2017.

The Problem Nevertheless, there are still approximately 34 million American adults who do not have a high school diploma.

Why A Diploma Matters On average, individuals with a high school degree can expect to earn 30 percent more than adults without a diploma over their lifetime, a difference of nearly $10,000 per year, according to U.S. Census data. For many individuals, completing their high school education as an adult is just the beginning of their road to a college degree or new career.

Where to Find Free Classes Studying while balancing work and family may seem difficult, but help, advice and inspiration are close at hand. Each adult education center will work with new students to place them in the right classes and create a custom learning plan. Teachers and tutors in each program help students learn the material and support them as they earn their diploma.

New PSAs feature personal stories from recent graduates who earned their high school diplomas in their 20s, 30s and 40s. The campaign also showcases teachers who are helping students on their journey to achieving a high school equivalency diploma. The PSAs underscore that adults without a high school diploma may have more support than they realize— from teachers, friends and family—as they work toward continuing their education.

hey look like small, plastic boxes, round or square, stuck up on the wall or the ceiling—but they could save your life. They’re smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

Facts And Figures

• Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home including in hallways and the basement.

• Choose alarms that bear the label of a nationally recognized testing laboratory.

On average, eight people die in a home fire each day in the U.S.—almost 3,000 people every year. While working smoke alarms cut the chance of dying in a fire nearly in half, roughly two-thirds of all home fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

• Install smoke alarms at least 10 feet from cooking appliances to reduce the possibility of false alarms.

As for carbon monoxide detectors, more than 200 people die from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning in the U.S. annually. Several thousand more are treated in hospital emergency rooms for CO poisoning. Yet an estimated 70 percent of U.S. homes are not protected by a working CO alarm. CO is created when common fuels such as natural gas, oil, wood or coal burn incompletely. This odorless, colorless, tasteless gas is often called the “silent killer” because it is virtually undetectable without the use of proper technology. You can be poisoned by a small amount of CO over a longer time as well as by a large amount over a shorter time.

• Avoid locating alarms near bathrooms, heating appliances, windows or ceiling fans.

• If possible, alarms should be mounted in the center of a ceiling. If mounted on a wall, they should be six to 12 inches below the ceiling.

• Test your alarms every month by pressing the TEST button.

• Replace the batteries at least once a year. If an alarm “chirps” or “beeps” to indicate low batteries, replace them immediately.

• Occasionally dust or lightly vacuum the exterior of the alarm.

• Replace the alarms in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, but at least every 10 years.

What You Need To Know For the best protection, smoke alarms should be interconnected, so that they all sound if one sounds. Manufacturers are now producing batteryoperated alarms that are interconnected by wireless technology.

Combination smoke alarms that include both ionization and photoelectric alarms offer the most comprehensive protection. An ionization alarm is more responsive to flames, while a photoelectric alarm is more responsive to a smoldering fire.

Hardwired smoke alarms with battery backups are considered to be more reliable than those operated solely by batteries.

What’s This Bump On My Foot?

umps on feet can signal serious or nonserious conditions, so it’s best to have all bumps properly examined by a foot and ankle surgeon.

The most common type of foot bump, ganglionic cysts, are soft, harmless, fluid-filled sacs found on the tendons and joints of the foot.

Ganglionic cysts can be caused by a leaking of jellylike fluid from the “capsule” surrounding the joint or tendon and may be on the top of the foot, near the ankle joint or even on the side of the foot. The cyst won’t disappear on its own and the best way to prevent reoccurrence is to have it surgically removed by a foot and ankle surgeon.

Plantar fibromas are another type of harmless bump found on the foot. Plantar fibromas are fibrous, hard bumps found within the ligament of the foot and are common in the arch area on the bottom of the foot. Nonsurgical treatments, such as steroid injections or orthotic devices, may relieve symptoms. Surgical removal is an option for people who still have pain after trying nonsurgical approaches.

Foot bumps suspected of being something more serious are biopsied for proper diagnosis. If it is cancer, the foot and ankle surgeon will remove the mass working with an oncologist for further treatment.

Foot bumps don’t go away on their own. The sooner a bump is properly evaluated, you can have peace of mind, move forward with treatment and resume everyday activity.

Five Ways To Fight Back Against Identity Fraud

I

f you’ve been a victim of identity fraud lately, you’re not alone. Nearly 17 million other Americans were, too, according to the 2018 annual Identity Fraud Study released by Javelin Strategy & Research, a research-based advisory firm that helps its clients to make better-informed business decisions in a digital financial world. In 2017, fraudsters stole $16.8 billion in the U.S. alone, the Javelin study found.

Identity fraud is defined as the unauthorized use of another person’s personal information to achieve illicit financial gain. It can range from simply using a stolen payment card account, to making a fraudulent purchase, to taking control of existing accounts or opening new accounts.

The study identified four significant trends: • Record high incidence—In 2017, 6.64 percent of consumers became victims of identity fraud.

• Total account takeover losses reached $5.1 billion. Account takeover continues to be one of the most challenging fraud types for consumers, with victims paying an average of $290 in out-of-pocket costs and spending 16 hours on average to resolve.

• Online shopping presents the greatest fraud opportunity. Card-not-present fraud is now 81 percent more likely than point-of-sale fraud.

• Fraudsters are getting more sophisticated. One and a half million victims of existing account fraud had an intermediary account opened in their name first.

difficult for fraudsters to take over your accounts. Also, use strong passwords or a password manager to secure accounts.

2. Secure your devices—Criminals have shifted their focus to digital devices for the access they can provide to accounts and the information they store or transmit. Institute a screen lock, encrypt data stored on the devices, avoid public Wi-Fi, use a VPN, and install anti-malware.

3. Place a security freeze—If you’re not planning on opening new accounts in the near future, a freeze on your credit report can prevent anyone else from opening one in your name—especially important if a data breach has exposed sensitive, personally identifiable information. Credit freezes must be placed with all three credit bureaus and prevent everyone except existing creditors and certain government agencies from accessing your credit report. Should you need to open an account requiring a credit check, the freeze can be lifted through the credit bureaus.

4. Sign up for account alerts—Many financial service providers, including depository institutions, credit card issuers and brokerages, as well as e-mail and social media providers, offer the option to get notifications of suspicious activity. Some even let you specify the scenarios under which you want to be notified, to reduce false alarms.

5. Protect yourself from unauthorized online transactions—Embedded chips make fraud at physical stores more challenging, so fraudsters target online merchants. Some financial institutions offer alerts for online transactions, the ability to institute limits on online transactions, or even advanced controls through 3-D Secure (for example, Verified by Visa, SecureCode from Mastercard, and others). These can help quickly detect and even prevent online fraud from occurring.
