audiences on a romp rife with comic misunderstandings. Puck, the servant to the king of the fairies, sets off a chain reaction when his love potion causes the fairy queen to fall in love with a weaverturned-donkey. Then, human lovers fall into the mix, and a night of confusion unfolds in a magical forest full of fairies and enchanting winged creatures. This enduring comedy of errors has something for everyone.

Choreographer Celia Dale was first commissioned in 1995 to create A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Ballet Repertory Theatre (then known as Ballet Theatre of New Mexico). The company has produced it twice since, the last time being in 2006. In BRT’s first review, Jennifer Noyer in the Journal on May 9, 1995 states, “Dale’s ballet succeeded in creating a frothy world of lighter-thanair creatures. She balanced and contrasted this ethereal world against the passions and foibles of human society. Shakespeare’s comic duality and gentle satire was maintained throughout.” And on March 12, 2006 Noyer exclaims, “Hers was a charming restatement of the “Dream” full of humor and visual delight. Dale’s intuitive

sense of choreographic and musical form, plus a fine eye for selecting her cast of characters, made this production a charming fit with Felix Mendelssohn’s music.”

For those of you familiar with Mendelssohn’s seminal score, ranging from the grand organ swells and trumpet fanfares of the Wedding March to a rustic peasant dance built around a string refrain that imitates the sound of a braying donkey, you realize this Overture, Op 21 and Incidental Music Op 61, originally written for the play, are only about an hour’s worth of music. Therefore, Dale selected the additional music from Mendelssohn’s repertoire of the Overture to Son and Stranger, Op 89 and the Violin Concerto to expand the music for her full-length ballet.

BRT’s current director, Katherine Giese, is delighted to again be presenting Dale’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Giese says, “Celia’s ballet is not only hilarious it gives BRT the opportunity to make Shakespeare approachable and funny for all ages. We are presenting the classics in a way the entire family can enjoy. With this, I hope BRT is helping to instill an appreciation for all the performing arts, not just ballet, for our young audiences to carry with them through life.” Leading the 2019 cast are Katherine Liljestrand (Titania), Chris Bornet (Oberon), Kelsey Gorelick-Barrows (Hermia), Jacob Edington (Lysander), Ashley Torrez (Helena), Edward Montoya (Demetrius), and Gonzalo Monge (Puck).

Where Were You In ’52?

N

ot many people today remember what has been called the most radical street-name change in American history, but it took place right here in the Duke City in 1952.

The Second World War brought big changes to Albuquerque. The establishment of Kirtland Air Force Base and Sandia Corporation (originally the Manhattan Project’s

top-secret “Z Division”) pumped federal dollars into the local economy and created hundreds, if not thousands, of new jobs. The city’s population tripled between 1940 and 1950. With post-war prosperity came a construction boom, as new subdivisions sprang up on the East Mesa.

new neighborhoods separated by tracts of undeveloped land, each with its own set of street names dreamed up by the developers without much oversight from the City Planning Commission. As the vacant land between filled in with more new neighborhoods, problems appeared. Streets didn’t line up.

Some streets changed names two or three times as they passed from one subdivision to another.

As a rule, the Planning Commission approved the street names proposed by the developers unless they duplicated existing names. Nevertheless, some duplicate names slipped through.

Others were misspelled. And some of the pseudo-Spanish names coined by non-Spanish-speaking developers were ungrammatical, or simply made no sense. We still have a lot of those.

House numbers were another problem. Sometimes a street would change directions, curving from north-south to east-west, but retaining the north-south numbering sequence. Other anomalies occurred when block numbers assigned by one developer didn’t follow those assigned in an

adjacent subdivision. The problem had to be solved either by changing block numbers in mid-block, or by skipping a block—creating confusion for anyone trying to locate a particular address.

By 1951, the situation had become so chaotic that the City Commission decided to act. After lengthy hearings, a plan was developed that altered the names of about 650 streets, including some in unincorporated areas beyond the city limits. It took effect July 1, 1952, and though it didn’t address all of those issues, it did fix the worst of them.

In some cases, entire neighborhoods were affected. In the near North Valley, for example, a cluster of streets had formerly been named for U.S. presidents. But a newer set of streets in the Heights, proceeding east from Washington, honored other presidents. For the sake of consistency, the North Valley streets were renamed.

Roosevelt became Constitution; Taft became Bellamah; Wilson became Aspen; Harding became Hannett; Coolidge became (continued on next page)

Haines; etc. McKinley escaped with only partial obliteration. It is now known simply as Kinley.

A similar fate befell several streets that had been named for states to accommodate the new state streets east of San Pedro.

New York Avenue became Lomas Boulevard, although a small remnant of New York still exists in the Old Town area. Lomas has undergone several realignments and swallowed up other preexisting streets over the years.

The state streets had originally been platted only south of Central Avenue, so the streets north of Central that aligned with them were changed so that they matched up. Some were renamed for other reasons. San Quentin became Charleston, because of its negative associations with the prison in California. According to legend, City Commission Chairman Clyde Tingley also wanted to rename Alcazar Street for the same reason—apparently confusing it with Alcatraz. Cooler

heads prevailed, and Alcazar remains Alcazar.

In addition to renaming streets and re-numbering some addresses, another major change was made in the 1952 shakeup.

The present quadrant system was introduced, so that what had been, for example, North 4th Street became 4th Street Northwest.

The north-south dividing line remained Central, and the eastwest one became the railroad tracks, reflecting what were then still the city’s main transportation corridors. If one were dividing Albuquerque into quadrants today, one would likely make Interstates 25 and 40 their boundaries, but no interstates existed in 1952.

Needless to say, not everyone was happy about all these changes, but most agreed that something had to be done. And since many of the streets affected still existed only on paper, the inconvenience was not as great as it might have been if the renaming had been delayed.

Treating Your Dog To A More Healthful Life

H

aving been raised with animals in a rural New Mexico town and having been a dog lover all my life, I knew when I purchased my first home several years back that it wouldn’t feel complete without pets.

So, we rescued Sonny Boy Blue, a 2-year-old white Labrador retriever, although truth be told he rescued us.

When we took him to his first vet visit, he weighed in at a whopping 117 pounds — approximately 40 pounds overweight for a male of that breed. He had hip dysplasia, and his body was already riddled with osteoarthritis.

While the hip disorder can be a common among larger dogs, Sonny’s rapid weight gain during his young lifetime likely exacerbated the problem and led to his arthritis.

Our beloved friend and veterinarian Kent Hall explained that dogs, like

humans, can have health problems resulting from being overweight and that, like us, some issues can be alleviated or even eliminated by cutting back on their food intake and getting more exercise.

“How much should we feed him?”

I asked. His answer was simply, “Less than you’re feeding him now.”

The bottom line here was that Sonny relied on us to keep him healthy. He couldn’t choose his own food, much less be trusted to monitor his own intake. I’m not even sure I ever witnessed him actually chew his food; it was more like he inhaled it!

What we placed in front of him in his food bowl would mean his success or failure in achieving a healthy size.

Typically, whole foods like peanut butter, pumpkin, carrots, green beans and boiled chicken are a good alternative to calorie-filled pup treats. Although these healthy snacks are an acceptable alternative, it is best to consult with your veterinarian before offering these to your dog.

If you purchase snacks from the pet store, look for those with few ingredients, like hydrated chicken strips or peanut butter biscuits, advises the experts at Animal Humane New Mexico. (Animal Humane is a local, private nonprofit animal shelter, not affiliated with the Humane Society of America.)

Also, look for treats from the store to be made in the USA since they’re typically made with more nutritional oversight than in other countries. Animal Humane also suggests to steer clear of artificial flavors and colors. Of course, there are foods that are healthful for humans but are highly toxic to dogs.

These include grapes and raisins, gum or any product containing xylitol, chocolate, avocados, onions, macadamia nuts and garlic, according to the Animal Humane clinic. A more inclusive list can be found on the American Veterinary Medical Association website.

Aside from giving your pup appropriate amounts of healthy food, scheduling his or her annual wellness exam and ensuring vaccines are up to date, pet owners should ensure their pets receive regular activity. Just like humans, an inactive dog is prone to health problems, and by nature we are designed to move.

Increase, improve exercise with paws-itive training There are many places around town where you can take your dog for fun outdoor activities that would boost both of your emotional and physical well-being. Check the City’s website for locations of dog parks and rules (cabq.gov), or take advantage of the incredible and vast Open Space spanning the Albuquerque metro area.

Note that the city dog parks turn off access to drinking water in the winter, so be sure and take your own.

If your dog doesn’t behave as well as you’d like on a leash, there are easy steps you can take to make walking more enjoyable for both of you. For example, putting Sonny through loose-leash training enabled us to more easily handle this strong horse of a dog on neighborhood walks and therefore get more exercise for us all. This type of training involves stopping every time your dog tugs on the leash so as to prevent him from pulling you along haphazardly.

“This teaches them that the consequence of pulling gets them nowhere,” said Trevor Driggs, operations director of The Center at Animal Humane New Mexico and a certified professional dog trainer.

The idea is that every time you stop, by planting one foot firmly in front of the other and halting, the dog will turn or step back to seek a cue from his owner. Utilizing a front clipping, no-pull harness helps assist in turning his body and does not cause any pain but rather simply redirects his attention back to the owner, Driggs said. This action causes the leash to become loose. Once he realizes his tugging behavior is continually causing a halt, he will eventually put the “stop” behavior together with the “go,” learning the reward is being able to walk at a marked pace, with a loose leash, instead of at his own pace.

During this time, the dog is also allowed to sniff within the limits of the length of the leash. By providing this outlet of exploration, dogs will no longer feel the need to demand it, and therefore will stop pulling, Driggs said. This is much more enjoyable for everyone on the walk, and results in more outings for you and your dog, a direct health benefit for both of you.

id you know that in the United States 1 in 4 deaths is caused by heart disease? By improving

understanding and knowledge of heart disease and by promoting heart-healthy habits and preventive care, we can collectively decrease the impact of poor heart health on our society. That’s one of the reasons why February is American Heart Month. A common type of heart disease is congestive heart failure, which I discuss in this month’s column.

What is heart failure, and how common is it?

Heart failure is a condition in which a person’s heart is not able to pump as much blood as the body requires. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that about 5.7 million people in the U.S. suffer from heart failure and that about half of the people who are diagnosed with heart failure die within five years of diagnosis.

common cause of hospitalization in people ages 65 and older.

What are some of the symptoms of heart failure?

There are many possible symptoms of heart failure, including fatigue, shortness of breath, decreased exercise capacity, fluid retention, and swelling of the lower legs. Increased shortness of breath when lying down can also occur. It is important to note that these symptoms are known as “non-specific” symptoms, which means that if you have them, you don’t necessarily have heart failure. There are other conditions that can cause the same or similar symptoms. If you do have any of these symptoms, see your doctor for evaluation.

What are the risk factors for heart failure?

Risk factors for heart failure include coronary heart disease, prior heart attack, smoking, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

A prior heart attack means that some of the heart muscle is no longer able to function as well.

Other conditions can also increase the risk for heart failure, including disease of any of the four heart valves (more commonly the mitral and aortic valves), thyroid disease, and congenital (present at birth) heart disease.

How is heart failure diagnosed?

Your doctor would evaluate you with a thorough history of any symptoms you may have, a physical exam and diagnostic tests. Tests might include blood samples, X-rays and possibly other assessments of how your heart is functioning.

Additional treatment might include medications that help your body get rid of excess fluid, medications that help the heart work better or more efficiently, or interventional procedures to correct specific issues with the heart. It is important to work closely with your doctor and any specialists that your doctor refers you to.

What can I do to decrease my chances of developing heart failure?

Eating a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight for your height and exercising regularly are all steps that can help. Stop smoking if you smoke, and limit your intake of alcohol. Get regular health checkups. If any issues are identified, or if you have any chronic disease, work closely with your doctor to keep them well managed.

Dear Patty, The rising cost of prescription drugs is a problem that stings millions of Americans. While there’s no one solution, there are some different strategies and resources that can help reduce your drug costs, so you can afford what you need. Here are several to consider.

If you have insurance, know your drug formulary: Most drug plans today have

formularies (a list of medications they cover) that place drugs into different “tiers.” Drugs in each tier have a different cost. A drug in a lower tier will generally cost you less than a drug in a higher tier, and higher tier drugs may require you to get permission or try another medication first before you can use it.

To get a copy of your plan’s formulary, visit your drug plan’s website or call the 800 number on the back of your insurance card.

Once you have this information, share it with your doctor so, if possible, he or she can prescribe you medications in the lowercost tiers. Or, they can help you get coverage approval from your insurer if you need a more expensive drug.

You also need to find out if your drug plan offers preferred pharmacies or offers a mail-order service. Buying your meds from these sources can save you some money too.

Talk to your doctor: Ask your doctor if any of the medications you’re currently taking can be reduced or stopped. And, find out if the ones you are taking are available in generic form. About 80 percent of all premium drugs on the market today have a lower-cost alternative. Switching could save you between 20 and 90 percent.

Ask for a three-month prescription: This can be significantly cheaper for drugs you take long-term. If you use insurance, you’ll pay one co-pay rather than three.

Split your pills: Ask your doctor if the pills you’re taking can be cut in half. Pill splitting allows you to get two months’ worth of medicine for the price of one. If you do this, you’ll need to get a prescription from your doctor for twice the dosage you need.

Find and use online discounts: Start by trying GoodRx.com, BlinkHealth.com or WeRx.org.

They will ask for the name of the drug, the dose, the number of pills, and where you live. Then they will show you what you can expect to pay at various pharmacies if you use their discount coupons or vouchers, which you can print out

or download to your phone to show a pharmacist.

Pay cash: Most generic medications cost less if you don’t use your insurance. For example, chains like Target and Walmart offer discount-drug programs that sell generics for as little as $4 for a 30-day supply and $10 for a 90-day supply if you pay outof-pocket. While some insurance companies charge a $10 copay for a 30-day supply.

Also ask your pharmacy if they offer a drug discount card program and compare costs with your insurance plan. You can also find free drug discount cards online at sites like NeedyMeds. org, which can be used at most U.S. pharmacies.

Shop online: You can also save by using an online pharmacy like HealthWarehouse.com but be sure to use an online retailer that operates within the U.S. and is licensed. The site should display the VIPPS symbol, which shows it’s a Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Site.

Search for drug assistance programs: If your income is limited, you can probably get help through drug assistance programs offered through pharmaceutical companies, government agencies and charitable organizations. To find these types of programs use sites like BenefitsCheckUp.org, PatientAdvocate.org, RxAssist.org and NeedyMeds.org.

onsumers tend to believe that they can easily resist sophisticated marketing tactics. However, marketing messages claiming a particular product can treat, cure, or heal an ailment are incredibly persuasive and pervasive.

The health food and supplement market has multiplied into a multi-billiondollar industry. While health-minded spending is wise, there is some risk that it can turn foolish if driven by hype, leaving a person with countless products that don’t create a significant health benefit.

Consumers need tools to build a simple and effective wellness strategy and nothing more. How many expensive supplements and energy bars get left in the cabinet to expire? Were these items purchased after a deep dive in clinical research or based on a whim? Distracted attention leads to diffuse mental energy,

Clearing The Heart-Mind Before Buying unhealthy spending and unnecessary consumption. Focusing on quick “health” purchases as opposed to making lifestyle changes may be missing the forest for the trees.

Decision Fatigue Slowing down and centering actions and purchases based on an overall guiding philosophy can lead to better investments. Roy Baumeister writes about “decision fatigue” in the Journal of Consumer Research (2002).

Decision fatigue results when buyers make purchases while confused, he says. He found that the more distracted the consumer, the poorer their purchasing choices. However, individuals prepared with a firm idea of their needs, a working knowledge of their previous purchases, and adequate purchasing information were best able to resist decision fatigue. Baumeister writes that those with high self-control make purchases based on “long-term value and benefits.”

Baumeister’s research regarding decision fatigue also shows that when a person exerts themselves in one decision-making capacity, they may effectively exhaust their ability to make wise choices in subsequent areas.

How often do folks force down horse pills and healthful food only to later

surrender to fried food and cake? Many actions exhaust health-based decision power, leading to a boomerang effect, essentially canceling out the initial good intentions with bad ones.

Think about all the choices that exhaust the brain throughout the day. Great minds and successful entrepreneurs Albert Einstein, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg and Henry Rollins each made one less choice, wearing the same basic outfit daily, to save the energy of that decision for other areas of interest. The key is, don’t make wellness so complicated. Instead, settle the mind and simplify.

Limit distractions and hold to a small set of core values by considering the most important aspects of health you’d like to address and the most effective actions you’re willing to take to achieve your goals.

Mushin -The Absence of the Heart-Mind The Asian philosophy of ‘Zen’ teaches the concept of ‘mushin’ in Japanese and ‘wuxin’ in Chinese (“no mind”), which refers to a mental state. ‘Mu’ relates to ‘the absence of’ and ‘Xin’ relates to the ‘heart-mind,’ collectively meaning the “mind of no mind.”

To enter a state of awareness and to actively clear disruption, consider cultivating a practice of ‘mushin.’

Author David Allen captures ‘mushin’ beautifully with this vision: “Imagine throwing a pebble into a still pond.

How does the water respond? The answer is, totally appropriately to the force and mass of the input; then it returns to calm. It doesn’t overreact or underreact.”

Through behavior modification and principled action, one can experience life from a seasoned mindset that disallows external narrative to drive rational behavior.

Classifieds The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) Advisory Council Needs members to join its efforts in promoting awareness and educating the community about FGP and senior issues.

Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at Presbyterian and UNM Hospitals The Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at Presbyterian and UNM hospitals offer a place for parents to rest and regroup right at the hospital, just moments away from their sick child. The Family Rooms are open seven days a week and are staffed by hospital volunteers. The Family room volunteers greet families, maintain visitor data, stock food, drinks, and help families with their needs. Volunteers are asked to work one, three hour shift per week. Depending on where in New Mexico you live, the deer mouse or the house mouse may be likely trespassers as both are common rodent species.

The deer mouse is typically 4 inches to 9 inches long, reddishbrown in color, with a white chest, white feet, and a bi-colored tail that is brown on top and white on bottom. Their natural habitat is in rural and semi-rural areas, where they inhabit fields, pastures, and various types of vegetation found around homes and outbuildings.

This mouse commonly invades garages, attics, sheds, wood piles, and crawl spaces, as well as

general living quarters of homes. It is known to carry Hantavirus.

may produce as many as 10 litters (about 50 young) in a year.

Unlike the deer mouse, the house mouse does not have a furry tail and does not carry the disease. It may live in rural or urban areas.

Mice are very curious and tend to explore - and re-explore - their entire territory daily, investigating each change or new object that may be placed there. They are aggressive, showing no fear of new objects. These behaviors can be used to advantage when attempting to control a population. Disturbing the environment by moving boxes, shelves, pallets, and other objects can improve the effectiveness of traps. Mice will investigate the changed territory thoroughly. This is why (live catch) traps work so well.

In general, mice can enter quarter-inch openings. They may get in through broken windows, poorly screened attic and foundation vents; openings in any walls created by cable, oil, propane, electric, gas, water and/or sewage services; and through any other openings, cracks or crevices in foundations, walls, or roofs.

They can also chew holes directly through siding and/or window or door frames.

Mice of any variety can be prolific and very unpleasant to have infesting your home. Under optimum conditions, they breed year-round. Outside, they may tend toward seasonal breeding, peaking in the spring and fall. Females

• Decrease the likelihood of rodents in garages, sheds or barns by keeping water, food, and nesting or harborage materials at least 100 feet away from buildings.

• Repair all holes in buildings that would allow rodents entry.

Remember that the territory of mice rarely extends further than 30 feet from the nest, and more often is about 10 feet.

• If mice are sighted throughout a building, set multiple traps as this means that there are numerous discrete locations where they are dwelling.

• When using live traps, oatmeal is a very effective bait.

• On snap traps, a piece of Slim Jim is almost irresistible to mice - more effective than cheese or peanut butter. When you find a mouse in a snap trap, spray it with a disinfectant and put it in a plastic bag before disposing of it.

House mice prefer cereals over other items, although they will feed on a wide variety of foods.

Mice sometimes search for foods high in fat and protein, such as lard, butter, nuts, bacon and meat.

Sweets, including chocolate, are taken at times. Mice get much of their water from moisture in their food, but they will drink if water is readily available. Mice in buildings catch and eat flies, spiders, centipedes, cockroaches, beetles, millipedes and other arthropods. When outside, house mice consume a wide variety of weed seeds, grass seeds, various grains and vegetation.

In addition, they consume many insects and other invertebrates, e.g., slugs, spiders and centipedes.

When caught in a live trap, mice trapped later may eat the first, weaker captive(s).

Never use rodenticides for several reasons. First, if a mouse dies where you can’t find it, you will have an odor problem. Also, if the mouse (particularly deer mice) have ectoparasites such as fleas or mites, they will leave the dead carcass and may attack the human occupants of the house.

Mice should always be controlled with snap or live traps. If you have a crawl space under your house, you should have it mouse-proofed. Trapping with snap traps or live traps will work for rats as well. The control methods are similar with both animals.
