What Are You Paying For Financial Advice?

hile it seems like a simple enough question, you may find reaching a definitive answer to be a challenge! And without the answer, evaluating whether you are receiving true value for the cost is next to an impossible feat. The following are three common ways financial advisors are compensated for their services: Investment Management Fees If you have a portfolio of investments such as stocks, ETFs or mutual funds, your advisor likely charges a percentage of these assets for ongoing investment management. It’s important to note that many of these investments will also include internal fees processed by the fund managers.

These costs can be harder to identify and erode your performance over time if not kept in check.

Commissions There are a number of investment products that pay a commission, bonus or other compensation to an advisor. Examples include loaded mutual funds, annuities, life insurance and non-publicly traded REITs. Some of these products can provide unique and valuable benefits within a comprehensive portfolio, but it can be difficult to decipher whether they are in your best interest. This may be an important reason to seek a licensed financial professional acting in the capacity of a fiduciary.

Financial Planning Fees Another method of compensation commonly used is charging an hourly, project-based or retainer financial planning fee in exchange for advice.

This may include the development of a written financial plan or consultation on investments that are managed outside of the advisor’s direct control, such as your company retirement plan.

Advisors today will typically utilize one or more of these methods of payment depending on the planning needs of their clients and how they are licensed. Remember: Many financial professionals are nice individuals, and maybe even someone you consider a friend. However, when it comes to the business of your life savings, you owe it to your bottom line to make informed decisions, starting with a clear understanding of your investment costs and what you are getting for what you are paying.

Volunteers Needed For 2019 National Senior Games

I

f you are looking for a role model, about 10,000 of them are coming to Albuquerque to participate in the National Senior Games, June 14-25, 2019.

They will compete in 20 different men’s and women’s sports at facilities from Santa Fe to the University of New Mexico. Competition for these 50-and-older athletes includes archery, basketball, cycling, golf, horseshoes, swimming, tennis, track and field and triathlon.

In an age when life expectancies have declined for two consecutive years, says Hazel Tull-Leach, executive director for these games, “these role models show it’s not too late to turn it around.”

ATHLETE TO ORGANIZER Tull-Leach is a role model herself. A Cibola High graduate, she played basketball between 1987 and 1992 for Coach Marsha Sharp at Texas Tech. “In my senior year we lost to Stanford in the Sweet 16,” she says. The next year the Red Raiders won the women’s national title.

Ironically, although Tull-Leach could not play for the University of New Mexico because it eliminated women’s basketball between 1987 and 1991, she later became an assistant coach at UNM, working with the legendary Don Flanagan from 1995 to 2000. After that she became one of the voices of the women’s basketball program on 610 the Sports Animal, and she worked with the Lobo Club, raising money through a planned giving program called Lobo Legacy.

After 10 years in athletics, she spent eight years in development and marketing for the University of New Mexico, including the Children’s Hospital.

Tull-Leach’s active and athletic life was sculpted by having an Olympian for a father. Her dad, Wilfred Oliver Tull, ran the 800 and 1,500 meters at the 1948 Olympics. He was the first athlete to compete in those events for Trinidad and Tobago. “He got to carry the flag at the Olympics,” Tull-Leach says. “And he was still going to the gym until he was 84.”

Now that is a role model.

Known as “Coach,” Wilfred Tull

spent 20 years developing athletes and running clubs after he retired in 1976 and moved to Albuquerque.

Wilfred Tull was an age-group track coach in Albuquerque who coached the Duke City Dashers and helped start the Albuquerque Dust Devils. He passed away in 2003.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Tull-Leach doesn’t see any challenges to Albuquerque conducting the National Senior Games in 2019. “I don’t know if ‘challenge’ is the right word,” she says, “because people are really excited about the games.”

That said, she does need to find approximately 3,000 volunteers to assist with setting up and taking down the signage, registration tables and even the trash at athletic venues. She needs line judges, scorekeepers, and people willing to hand out snacks to the competitors.

In addition, she is planning to have the National Senior Games torch pass through all New Mexico communities on its way to a Celebration of Athletes prior to the actual competition. (continued on next page)

Albuquerque will contribute venues for horseshoes, pickleball, and tennis in addition to Balloon Fiesta Park. The triathlon will be held at Cochiti Lake, and cycling events will be held on Atrisco Vista (5 and 10 kilometers) near the Double Eagle Airport and at Las Campanas in Santa Fe (20 and 40 kilometers).

New device stops a cold

N

ew research shows you can stop a cold in its tracks if you take one simple step with a new device when you first feel a cold coming on.

Colds start when cold viruses get in your nose. Viruses multiply fast. If you don’t stop them early, they spread and cause misery.

But scientists have found a quick way to kill a virus. Touch it with copper. Researchers at labs and universities agree, copper is “antimicrobial.” It kills microbes, such as viruses and bacteria, just by touch.

ne of the most popular times to visit New Orleans is during Mardi Gras, or “Fat Tuesday,” the last day of the Carnival season. The festive annual celebration of revelry is the day before Ash Wednesday, celebrated

by Christians, and is the first day of the 40-day Lenten season, a period of penance before Easter Sunday.

This year, Mardi Gras falls on February 13. Called “America’s Greatest Party,” the elaborate festivities in New Orleans include lavish parades, concerts, colorful beads, dancing, music, and, of course, the Big Easy’s delicious food and libations, where you feast to your heart’s content before the fasting begins.

Fat Tuesday is synonymous with indulgent foods and cocktails. Nothing says Mardi Gras like a steaming bowl of Andouille Sausage Jambalaya with shrimp and chicken. If you are unable to attend Mardi Gras in The Big Easy, you will be able to enjoy Jambalaya right at home, courtesy of Rachael Ray, with a dish featured in her “Every day is Fat Tuesday” episode. I also included one of the most popular drinks served in New Orleans, The Hurricane, and a drink created at a brewery right here in Albuquerque.

Place a large, deep skillet over medium-high heat. Add oil and butter to the pan. Cube chicken and place in hot oil and butter. Brown chicken three minutes, add sausage and cook two minutes more. Add onion, celery, pepper, bay and cayenne.

North Valley Center For Aging Project Breaks Ground

lbuquerque’s North Valley is about to become the city’s senior care corridor, as the area will in coming months get even more services to help its citizens age well.

Mary Martinez, owner of MGM Development and CEO of Home Instead, broke ground last month at 583 Osuna Road NE., on the Isabel Gallegos Center for Aging. The 3,500-squarefoot building is planned as a one-stop shop of sorts for seniors.

The building will be situated behind Home Instead, though its only connection to the senior home care franchise is Martinez.

She worked with Tiara Builders to design the facility to look like a comfortable home, complete with a library, common sitting

area and fireplace. It will also house six offices for various entities that focus on helping seniors and their families.

“It’s important to me that when people walk in the door, they feel at home and comfortable, because they are really seeking help for the aging process,” Martinez said. “Ideally, (I would like to have) a geriatric counselor, an elder attorney, a financial advisor, someone who can help plan placement for people who might not be safe at home, maybe someone who can help with downsizing, or someone who can help veterans find and get going on benefits.”

Martinez said that the project is at least 15 years in the making. In her work with

Home Instead, she often finds that her clients need referrals to other senior care services. For many seniors, transportation is an issue, or driving across town can prove difficult, she said.

She formulated a plan to one day help seniors find services near one another. Not only is Home Instead on the same property, but down the road are HME (a durable medical equipment supplier) and two hospice organizations.

“None of this level of support was available for my grandmothers,” said Martinez, who earned her degree in sociology and gerontology from New Mexico State University.

“Non-medical home care wasn’t around. Since then, I have thought about what would have made life easier for them, and for their kids.”

The Isabel Gallegos Center for Aging comes at a good time in history. More people than ever need aging services, and yet those services are in short supply. The Pew Research Center reports that 10,000 people turn 65 in America each day, and that will continue to be the trend until 2020 or so. In 2011, that number was 8,000. Meanwhile, conservative estimates by the Congressional Budget Office suggest that total

long-term care expenditures will increase at a rate of 2.6 percent per year above inflation by 2030, when the senior population will make up 18 percent of the U.S. By 2020, spending will be $195 billion, and rise to $270 billion in 2030.

The Center for Aging, then, is timely. But it is also an answer to a call that Martinez has felt on her life.

“It’s something that I personally have always wanted to do, sort of a personal mission,” she said.

“My grandmother Isabel (for whom the center is named) was my main inspiration. She had Alzheimer’s. Back then there was not a lot of common knowledge; it was something people didn’t say above a whisper. We lost her sooner because we didn’t know how to care for her. If we can spare another family, that would be great. I really would love for people to know they have resources, there’s help out there, and you aren’t alone.”

The center is expected to open sometime in May. As of deadline for this story, Martinez had leased one of the center’s office spaces to a therapist who specializes in grief and loss.

Inspired from Lewis Carroll’s tales about a young girl navigating a realized dream world, this ballet springs to life with elaborate choreography and costumes. Alice navigates a realm of size-changing elixirs, an extraordinary tea party, and enraged monarchs as she attempts to find her way back up the rabbit hole. It’s a familiar tale that’s taken the form of a silent film, Disney movies, and countless stage adaptations.

Dating After 50 Doesn’t Have To Be Daunting

Online, hobbies among best ways to meet in singles scene that challenges women

he quest for Mr. or Ms. Right can be exasperating, even for those young enough to wear skinny jeans without Spanx or post on Snapchat without help. So, it’s not unusual for those single and searching over age 50 to experience full-on paralysis.

Take heart – not only are the opportunities to meet other singles perhaps greater than ever, but also the path to partnership doesn’t have to end at the altar.

Whether due to divorce or death of a spouse, or increasingly the choice to remain unmarried, more older Americans are swimming laps in the dating pool. The waters do, however, slant female.

According to the Administration on Aging’s Department of Health and Human Services Profile of Older Americans in 2016, 55

percent of women over age 65 were unmarried, while only 30 percent of men in that age group were. About one in every seven people was age 65 or older, and the numbers are rising.

The fact that the ratio of available men to women decreases with age is usually no surprise to women. They may not know the statistics, but they report the reality anecdotally to one another over many a merlot.

Lisa Copeland said it was older women’s unique struggles – her own included – that led her to start the Internet-based business findaqualityman.com. Since 2012, Copeland has served from her home in the Midwest as a love coach and dating expert for women over 50 all over the world. Other than a background in social work, her experience in the dating field is just that – her personal experience.

Charlie Otto, 63, and Margie Davis, 66, met during a cycling tour in Yellowstone National Park. Otto had never been married, and Davis was widowed. The two married last year after traveling the world cycling together.

“I’ve been there. That’s why women trust me to help them,” she said. “It took me 10 years of misery in the dating world before I got it right, and I don’t want to see other women suffer trying to find love in the second half of their life like I did. Your ego can take a huge hit … and for many women, it takes them down and makes them want to quit.”

The science of dating Self-confidence and selfimage are the greatest challenges for women, whereas “men put themselves out there and are rejected constantly,” Copeland said.

That’s in part because men often want to date younger women.

Men are genetically wired to seek women of child-bearing age, Copeland said. But the older man, younger woman match rarely works. Life experiences are too different. Plus, the older we get, the more complications there are – from extended families to health problems.

For those reasons and others, marriage may not be the ideal outcome of dating. Studies have shown that it’s companionship later in life that plays a role in health, happiness and longevity.

“What really is important is connection with other people socially, so you’re not isolated,” said Carol Frank, a psychotherapist

with a private practice in Albuquerque. “Isolation is such a dangerous place, leading to mental health issues and depression.

“The primary focus should not necessarily be on dating to find a spouse as much as it is to find mutual interests, companionship, emotional intimacy and depth of connection - identifying what you want out of life and how other people can meet you there psychologically as well as physically finding someone who can be active with you.”

After years of dating, Copeland is in a long-term committed, healthy relationship, with no plans to tie the knot. She says she found her significant other through a professional matchmaker. While she strongly advocates that women seek a coach, her primary piece of advice to them is twofold: 1. Create a dating blueprint that includes at least two out of four options for meeting men - online dating, hiring a matchmaker, seeking help from friends, or meeting in real life through such activities as volunteering or meetups.

2. Create a “quality man template” by identifying and writing down your deal breakers, and the qualities and values that are important to you. (continued on next page)

“I had a client tell me, ‘I want a man who’s tall.’ But her (ex-) husband was tall and it didn’t work out. Height was not going to matter in the long run.”

The tendency to repeatedly select or seek out partners with traits similar to previous significant others may, in fact, be something to pay close attention to.

“We’re wired to go toward the familiar, and that’s not necessarily always going to benefit us,” Frank said. “Reflecting on past relationships and what in those relationships has served us well and what in those relationships has not been healthy for us can be helpful. It may be that we need to do it differently if we get the opportunity.”

Finding a partner by doing what you love When it comes to matters of the heart, the experts suggest shared values and mutual interests are good basic blueprints for compatibility.

It was a cycling trip with a girlfriend in the vicinity of Yellowstone National Park that spun 66-year-old Albuquerque resident Margie Davis’ life around for the second time inside of a year.

Davis had been happily married for 31 years, had three sons and grew a decades-old family business designing custom passive solar homes. Five years ago, her husband succumbed to Alzheimer’s disease.

To help cope, Davis turned to her passion of cycling.

“I wasn’t looking. I was just really happy being single and not dating,” she said. “I met him eight months after my husband died, and that’s really too early in my opinion.”

The “him” was Charlie Otto, 63, a free spirit outdoor adventurer,

cycling fanatic and founder of a microbrewery who lived and played in Idaho. Otto had never been married. Hoping to meet someone, he signed up to be a bike mechanic on the tour Davis was on.

The connection was almost instant.

After that, the two went on other cycling trips together, often for weeks at a time, camping around New Mexico or in Europe.

“We had two tents, by the way,” Davis said.

Otto asked her to marry him in Copenhagen, and the couple said their vows in Yosemite in April 2017.

Unbeknownst to her, Davis had done what Copeland advises her clients to do: “To take the pressure off of dating, you want to go out and you just want to meet new and interesting people. If you’re always trying to judge if they’re the one before you’re done with a cup of coffee, then you’re not going to have fun.”

Dating online, withholding judgment Joanie Griffin, 59, had that mindset when she decided to sign up on internet dating site Match. com about 10 years ago, after ending a relationship. Admittedly judgmental, she told herself that this time she would keep an open mind.

“I was just going to date my way through December, and I made a vow I would say yes to every single person. I was not looking for a relationship. I was just looking to be busy,” Griffin said.

A man named Rob Durham was the first to connect with her online.

Griffin was not impressed.

“I didn’t like him at all, but he kept asking me out. On date seven, I ended up really falling for him.

“Had I been my typical judgmental self, I would have

never gone on Date Two.” Griffin, who at the time owned the inperson matchmaking franchise It’s Just Lunch in Albuquerque as well as her own ad agency, had been married twice previously and had one teenage son.

Durham, 58 and also a divorcee, brought two adult daughters to the table. He traveled a lot for his career in banking software. Griffin says the two would never have met without technology.

When The Klan Came To Town

ast summer’s disturbing reappearance of the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis and other hate groups on the streets of Charlottesville, Va., and elsewhere brings to mind the period when Klan violence was on the rise more than 90 years ago.

While the Roaring Twenties blared away in the dance halls and speakeasies of the cities, in rural America the mood of that decade was more reactionary. Warren G. Harding, one of our most inept presidents, swept to victory in 1920 on a platform of “Back to Normalcy.” Fundamentalist religious fervor led to the passage of laws banning the teaching of evolution, culminating in the Scopes “Monkey Trial” of 1925. Antiimmigrant feeling ran high. And the Ku Klux Klan, dormant since Reconstruction days, once again reared its hooded head—and not only in the South. Klan chapters operated in all parts of the country, including, regrettably, New Mexico.

Klan activity was more prevalent in the southeastern counties of

“Little Texas,” but it reached even to Albuquerque and the Middle Rio Grande valley. Details are sketchy, but it appears that Klan chapters were organized in Albuquerque and Belen in the summer of 1922.

Contemporary news accounts name George Hoffman, a retired Belen postmaster, as one of the principal organizers. The Albuquerque Morning Journal reported the membership of the Albuquerque Klan to be more than 100 men.

The growing strength of the Klan caused enough concern that in February of 1923, the state Legislature enacted a law making it illegal to appear in public “wearing a mask, hood, robe or other covering . . . so as to conceal the identity of the wearer” and took the unusual step of stipulating that the law go into effect immediately, bypassing the statutory 90-day waiting period.

Albuquerque author Erna Fergusson, in her book New Mexico: A Pageant of Three Peoples (Knopf, 1951; revised 1964) recalls an incident when Sheriff Tony Ortiz and a couple of deputies broke up a Klan rally on the mesa outside

of town and ordered the Kluxers to unmask. However, a search of newspaper databases (with the assistance of the always-helpful staff of Albuquerque’s Special Collections Library) failed to turn up any mention of this incident or who might have been behind those masks, so it’s unknown exactly when (or if) it actually occurred.

Although its activities are shrouded in secrecy, the local Klan doesn’t seem to have lived up to its sinister reputation elsewhere.

To my knowledge, no lynchings or beatings have been attributed to it.

The Morning Journal editorialized against it but also reported the Klan making small cash donations to various worthy causes, including a church in Belen and a nursery school in Albuquerque.

Another Klan chapter in Roswell operated more openly, and some of its records have been made available to historians. A recent book, Sunshine and Shadows in New Mexico’s Past: The Statehood Period, 1912 to the Present, edited

by Richard Melzer (Historical Society of New Mexico, 2012), devotes an entire chapter to the

Roswell Klan.

The Klan was active there for about a decade, from 1924 to 1934. Jason W. James, an elderly Confederate army veteran who had been a Klan member in Louisiana in the 1870s, served as “Exalted Cyclops,” or president, of the Roswell group. In 1926, the organization even sponsored a float in the annual Cotton Carnival parade. Membership peaked in 1927, with 362 duespaying members. Thereafter, its numbers steadily declined and by 1935, it was out of business.

As in Albuquerque, the Roswell Klan doesn’t seem to have had a reputation for violence. Even their cross “burnings” (held on their own grounds) were innocuous affairs: Instead of kerosene-soaked burlap, the crosses were wrapped with strings of red Christmas lights to simulate flames, as a fire-safety precaution.

Nevertheless, the Klan is the Klan, and we can be proud and thankful that its message of racism and intolerance found few takers in the Land of Enchantment.

id you know that Americans consume about 2.8 billion pounds of chocolate, or 11 pounds per person, each year? According to the National Coffee Association, it’s estimated that 62 percent of Americans drink coffee each day.

There are many ideas about the relative health benefits or risks of these two popular provisions, and it’s not always easy to separate the facts from the myths. In this month’s column, I will address some commonly asked questions about coffee and chocolate.

I enjoy drinking coffee, but I’ve heard that it causes insomnia. Could my daily cup of coffee be affecting my sleep?

It depends. Coffee contains caffeine, which is a stimulant.

The body metabolizes caffeine relatively quickly, usually in several hours. Although different people may metabolize caffeine more or less slowly, a cup or two of coffee in the morning should not generally affect sleep that night. On the other hand, a cup or two at dinner may very well make it harder to sleep.

Since caffeine is a stimulant, will coffee help me lose weight?

While the caffeine in coffee is a stimulant, it will not increase your body metabolism anywhere near enough to cause weight loss. Whether you lose or gain weight depends on the number of calories you eat and the amount of activity and exercise you do each day to burn calories.

Is coffee dehydrating?

As a mild diuretic, caffeine will increase water loss, but coffee consists mostly of water.

Available evidence does not show that drinking coffee will dehydrate you.

I also enjoy eating chocolate, but I’m worried that it will make me gain weight. Does chocolate cause weight gain?

It’s not the cocoa itself that causes weight gain, but there is a lot of sugar and fat in chocolate.

Again, it comes down to calories.

One ounce of chocolate contains about 155 calories. A three and a half ounce bar, however, will have over 540 calories.

The calories in chocolate can add up quickly. When eaten in moderation, chocolate should not cause weight gain.

Does chocolate cause acne?

Numerous clinical studies have been done on chocolate and acne, and they do not show a cause and effect link between eating chocolate and developing acne. Some studies suggest that diets high in sugar and processed foods may increase the likelihood of acne outbreaks, but the cocoa that is the basis for chocolate has not been identified as a cause of acne.

Since chocolate contains sugar, will it cause cavities?

Some studies suggest that dark chocolate, which is comprised of 70 percent cocoa or higher, contains substances that actually inhibit the growth of bacteria in the mouth. The American Dental Association website notes that “chocolate is your best bet” for eating candy because it comes off the teeth more easily than

other candies. Also, dark chocolate has much less sugar in it than milk chocolate.

Moderate intake of dark chocolate, diligent brushing and regular dental care will likely minimize the risk for cavities.

If you appreciate coffee, chocolate or both, there is nothing wrong with enjoying either of them in moderation.

They can be two of life’s more simple pleasures!

Now Enrolling for Pioneering Alzheimer’s Prevention Research Program

lbuquerque Neuroscience Inc. in Albuquerque, NM is now enrolling volunteer participants in a pioneering international Alzheimer’s disease prevention research program.

The Alzheimer’s Prevention Initiative (API) Generation Program is made up of two clinical trials—Generation Study 1 and Generation Study 2—and will test investigational study medications which aim to prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s disease in cognitively healthy people whose genetic makeup puts them at particularly high risk for developing the disease at older ages.

The number of people in New Mexico who are age 65 and older with Alzheimer’s disease is expected to increase 43.2% by 2025 to a projected 53,000, highlighting the urgency of finding a medical breakthrough.

Albuquerque Neuroscience Inc. is one of approximately 190 sites globally participating in the API Generation Program.

Prospective participants referred to the trial will be required to learn if they carry a specific gene that puts them at increased risk to developing Alzheimer’s. Genetic counseling will be provided in person or by phone.

Participants will be recruited via multiple venues, including the Alzheimer’s Prevention Registry’s GeneMatch program (www.endALZnow.org/ GeneMatch), a first-of-its kind program designed to identify a large group of people interested in volunteering for Alzheimer’s research studies, based in part on their genetic information.

How They Work Medical alert systems, which have been around for about 40 years, are popular products for elderly seniors who live alone.

Leased for about $1 a day, these basic systems provide a wearable help button – usually in the form of a neck pendant or wristband – and a base station that connects to the home phone line, or to a cellular network if no landline is present.

At the press of a button, your mom could call and talk to a trained operator through the system’s base station receiver, which works like a powerful speakerphone. The operator will find out what’s wrong, and will notify family members, a friend, neighbor or emergency services

as needed.

these beetles. Throw away any food you find that is infested with the beetles.

There are other types of beetles and some moths that will infest food products, but the control methods are the same for all of them.

Fungus gnats are very small flies with long legs, long antennae and distinctly patterned wings.

They are dark brown or black in color. They are generally found in over-watered house plants where the larvae feed on fungus in the potting soil and on moist organic material. The best way to control them is to let the plants dry out almost to the point of wilting before re-watering. That will kill the larvae in the soil. Then put an inch of aquarium gravel on the soil to prevent female fungus gnats from laying anymore eggs there. You can also place a yellow sticky trap on a stick in the soil to catch the adult gnats.

There are a few other pests that you can bring home in the winter, but none of them, nor the ones I mentioned, require pesticide applications. If you have a pest control company, have it inspect your home for signs of any of the above-mentioned pests and areas where pests can hide. Do not let the company generically spray pesticides along your baseboards or around your home, especially during the cold months.

Alzheimer’s Association The Alzheimer’s Association NM Chapter invites those interested to become volunteers.

Volunteer positions are varied and can involve clerical work, event participation, health fairs, group facilitators and Helpline counselors. Some positions require background check.

Hours of work are flexible to meet the needs of the volunteer and the association. Positions are available Monday thru Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Catholic Charities Senior Transportation Service Driver: (Use of your own vehicle is required) Provide transportation for individuals age 60+ to medical appointments, grocery shopping and business office. Volunteer must have a good driving record, patient, courteous, polite, and pleasant. Volunteers are needed any day of the week and weekends are optional.

Mileage reimbursement if required.

Senior Transportation Ride Coordinator: Answer phones, confirm ride requests and match rider and driver. (Coordinate rides).

Enter information into the data base, complete rider intakes over the phone and mail packets. Volunteer must have good phone etiquette, patient, and be familiar with data entry. You must take an Abuse Awareness training class.

2-3 volunteers are needed 2.5 hours per day, 5 days per week.

The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) Advisory Council Needs members to join its efforts in promoting awareness and educating the community about FGP and senior issues.

Council members advocate on behalf of FGP volunteers, evaluate the Program’s effectiveness, and assist in the recognition of Foster Grandparents by raising funds and in-kind resources. The Council currently meets once a month at the Barelas Senior Center. For more information call 767-5225.

Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) is looking for volunteers age 55 and older who are interested in making a difference in a child’s life.

Foster Grandparent volunteers must be willing to serve an average of 20 hours per week and must be able to pass a background check, physical, and tuberculosis test. Foster Grandparent volunteers serve one-on-one with children, working with them to build their social and emotional development as well as help improve their literacy skills.

Volunteers receive mileage reimbursement, supplemental liability insurance, meals while on duty, pre-service and monthly trainings, and recognition throughout the year.

We concentrate on our body and mind, but what about the heart? Relationships are vital to our survival. The 16th century English poet John Donne wrote: “No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.” In other words, we thrive on contact with other human beings.

The key to a longer life may be found in your relationship status.

Duke University Medical Center determined that Baby Boomers with permanent partners or spouses had a decreased risk of premature death during midlife years. Studies involving married couples have shown a decreased incidence of heart disease and cancer.

Dr. Ruth Westheimer, a wellknown sex therapist whose TV program Sexually Speaking was quite successful in the 1980s, and whose book Dr. Ruth’s Sex After 50, was instrumental in opening Main Street discussions regarding senior sexual practices, influenced later studies about sex over the age of 50.

Many studies have looked into older individual’s desires for intimacy, including handholding, caressing, sexual touching and intercourse. These studies’

participants reported high levels of satisfaction with their sex lives.

The No.1 deterrent to a senior’s sexual activity is availability of a partner. With today’s high rate of unsuccessful marriages, there are more seniors living alone, in group homes or even in institutionalized settings.

Medical issues may affect intimacy. Medication side effects can cause sexual dysfunction in both men and women.

Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, prostate cancer and urinary tract infections may also cause sexual malfunction. For women, post-menopausal hormonal depletion may result in decreased libido, urinary incontinence and vaginal dryness leading to pain with intercourse.

As sexuality is becoming a more relevant issue for a doctor’s visit, medical providers should not assume anything regarding a senior’s sexual activity. The medical community ought to engage seniors’ questions regarding geriatric sexuality in an open and nonjudgmental fashion.

As the incidence of senior intimacy rises, so do the inherent

risks associated with close encounters. Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among seniors are occurring more frequently as well. Ask your health care provider to check for STDs if you are sexually active.

Remember that other forms of intimacy may be just as important as intercourse. Hand-holding, hugging, snuggling and caressing may be just what the doctor ordered. Of course, chocolates and flowers never hurt.

Taking Intermittent Fasting Slow

ebruary is an excellent time to experiment with cleansing rituals that rid the body of toxins and excess weight for a lighter more active spring.

Intermittent fasting, or IF, has been an instinctive practice since the beginning of time. Spiritual texts of Christianity, Buddhism, and Islam, all discuss fasting rituals for renewal and healing. Hippocrates, Plato, and Gandhi, along with modern health experts share the view that taking breaks from regular eating patterns can bring greater mental clarity and improve health.

There is an abundance of research on this subject one such paper regarding diets and body composition was published by The International society of sports nutrition, 2017 (https://jissn. biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/ s12970-017-0174-y). The

paper analyzes many ‘diets’ and specifically credits intermittent fasting with producing similar weight loss results as calorie restricted diets. The study focused on two variations of the same idea, ‘reducing overall calorie consumption.’ It is great news that intermittent fasting is successful with weight loss, but I argue it does a lot more for health than just this! Intermittent fasting’s extensive physiological benefits begin after a minimum of 12 hours of fasting and have far more to do with detoxification and renewal than a simple low-calorie plan for weight loss.

When you eat, your body secretes insulin. When your insulin levels are high, your body isn’t focused on burning its own body fat. After about three to five hours (after eating) you enter a post-absorptive state for about 8 to 12 hours. During this time insulin levels begin to drop until you eventually shift into a fasting state, where your body turns to fuel in stored fat. From roughly hour 12 of fasting on, the benefits of fasting increase as the body breaks down fat stores releasing brain loving fatty acids called ‘ketones’ into the bloodstream. During this time it’s important to hydrate with purified water, herbal teas, and black coffee. Sweeteners and creamers

can break fasting benefits (some say a little cream in the coffee isn’t so bad) do your best to avoid them.

The way I perform intermittent fasting is with ‘Time-restricted feeding’, or the ‘16:8 Method,’ meaning 16 hours off, 8 hours on. I fast from 9pm to 1pm the following day. My meal times are between 1 pm and 9 pm (extending the fasting window whenever possible). Some folks prefer other fasting options such as the Eat-Stop-Eat- this is a fast one to two times per week for 24 hours. However, you design your fast, START SLOW! When you break your fast, eat mindfully and healthfully to add to the -cumulative benefits.

There is so much more to intermittent fasting. Hopefully, I’ve peaked your curiosity, and you will do your research to confirm or deny if this plan is right for you.

Some health conditions and medications will not tolerate fasting states. If you have a history of eating disorders, trouble gaining or maintaining healthy weight DO NOT FAST! Fasting can be an excellent time to rid the body of old cellular data, which might feel uncomfortable physically and emotionally. Love yourself and find guides to walk with you in your process.
